    Book Description

Joos van Cleve (active 1505/1508–1540/1541) was an accomplished and influential Netherlandish artist in the first decades of the sixteenth century. A superb technician and sensitive colorist, he created some of the most attractive and endearing images in northern Renaissance painting. In this book—the first major study of Joos in nearly eighty years—the foremost authority on the artist provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of Joos’s life and works.
John Hand discusses the events of Joos van Cleve’s career, the obscurity of his works after his death, and their rediscovery in the nineteenth century. He examines specific paintings in Joos’s oeuvre and addresses a wide range of topics concerning the artist’s style, chronology, iconography, influences, and many commissions. The second part of the book catalogues the complete paintings of Joos van Cleve, including works by Joos himself, workshop versions and copies of his paintings, and works of doubtful attribution.

      Book Description

As a budding poet and lyricist, Aine is on her way to an audition one fateful afternoon. Absentmindedly stepping into the street, she barely avoids getting struck by an oncoming vehicle. Not only is the cute teenager lucky to be alive, but her brush with death turns out to be a date with destiny. The driver of the car just happens to be Sakuya, the charismatic and fabulously handsome lead singer for a band called Lucifer. In short order, Sakuya and his crew compose a song using AineÅfs lyrics. The tune proves popular with the bandÅfs fans and Sakuya decides he wants a relationship, both professional and personal, with Aine. ThereÅfs only one small requirement: The lyrics Aine writes must be erotically charged. And guess what? Sakuya fully intends to introduce the young and inexperienced girl into the world of sensual delights. Does Sakuya actually care for Aine, or is she just another sexual conquest for him? Will Aine fulfill her dreams and become a professional lyricist, or has she simply sold her soul to Lucifer?

5 out of 5 stars A Mature reader who enjoys this Mature rated series.......2006-09-12

I've been reading manga for about 4 months now. About 6 months ago my husband got me into anime starting with Vandread, Witch Hunter Robin and Inuyasha to name a few. One day I wandered into the manga section of Borders and asked a teenage girl who was sitting there reading to recommend some titles. I left with Fushigi Yugi and Tuxedo Gin. Now my queues with Netflix and Blockbuster have only anime titles and I own about 15 series of manga. I also go to Borders at least 3 times a week to sit in the cafe, drink tea and read manga. I can read one volume in about 45 minutes, so I can't afford to buy all I read. I end up buying what I like. I am on disability from teaching. Anime and manga allow to escape my reality. Oh, I'm 39 years old.

I hesitated to read Sensual Phrase at first. I had seen it reccommended in the back of other books, I had looked at a few volumes on the shelf and at first thought "Oh, how Mary Sue" and "I'm too old for this". Finally I read volume 1, EH, it was okay and finally hooked me with the video shoot at the very end. On to Volume 2, I had time to kill so why not. By Volume 3 I had gone back to the shelves, reshelved the other titles I had pulled and grabbed all the Sensual Phrase volumes. Next, call hubby and tell him I will be late coming home. I sat there reading every volume out which was up to 14. I got lucky and 15 was published a few days later. AAGGHH, now the wait for 16 then 17. I thought 17 was the end, even the column in the back says so, but Amazon shows a volume 18 coming out in the winter. I'll take all I can get.

After that I found myself rereading Sensual Phrase at the store and finally when they had a sale I bought them all. I've read the series at least 5 times. I find new things each time I read. The second time I slowed down to savor the pictures and yes drool (in my head) over the sex scenes.

Why does a middle aged woman (though I don't look it)read a manga series aimed at teens? It's the Mary Sue factor I mentioned earlier. I want to be Aine. I want to be cared for, protected and have frequent hot sex with with a drop dead gorgeous guy (although I think Yuki is even better looking, I love long hair). I agree with the reviewer who said they were glad Aine is not stunningly beautiful because she is a stand-in for me. Is my marriage terrible? No. Do I not love my husband? No, I love him more now than I did when we married 16 years ago. But I like to escape to a fantasy world for a while where life is constantly exciting and things turn out all right every time. Make no mistake, this is as much fantasy as Middle Earth. I'm sure even sexy Japanese rock stars don't lead this kind of life!

Yes, Sakuya and Aine (or some other 2 people) have sex every 10 pages or so. It's not quite as often as one reviewer stated. Yes, Aine is constantly in danger and in need of rescuing. Don't we all want to be rescued from some part of our lives every once in a while?

I like the sex. I like the sexy drawings of luscious hunks on almost every page. I love the outrageous outfits Sakuya and sometimes the others wear. See Volume 7 for an interesting treat in this area. I'm drawn into their angst. I love the backstories. (More Yuki, More Yuki!!!) I want to be Aine for a while. For an hour or two or three my own life, which because of my disability sucks, fades away.

I wish this series and manga in general had been around when I was in high school. There were no teen books then, you went straight into adult books. Actually Kaikan Phrase (the Japanese title) was not even around in Japan when I was in high school ;)

For those who object to the sex, read something else, but let those of us who don't read what we want, no censorship please. For those of you who think it is unrealistic....DUH that's what it is supposed to be. If I want reality I have my own life OR there is this rather large section in both bookstores and libraries called NON-FICTION. I am not looking to be enlightened or educated. I am looking to be entertained and to have a great fantasy. Of course Aine or somebody has to get into trouble every volume. I don't think I could stomach 17 volumes of just sex and rock concerts. When I taught writing I told my students the first thing you have to come up with was a problem to make the story interesting. Maya Shinjo has to come up with 17+ problems.

I really hope they bring the anime series to DVD here in the US. It's not a retelling of the book, it focuses more on the band. But at least my Sensual Phrase habit could go on a little longer.

If you want steamy, sexy escapism, buy the first 3-4 volumes (or go read them in the store, buy a cup of coffee for your rent) and see if you are hooked. As I said earlier Volume 1 might not be enough to grab you. It's no different from many of the titles in the Romance section, it just has drawings and takes more volumes, unfortunately.

This is smut for women with pictures and I LOVE IT. Writing this review has made me want to go back and read the series again. I can't wait for 16!

      5 out of 5 stars review.......2006-06-19

In the beginning their love was a precious secret. Sakuya, the lead singer for Lucifer, was the seemingly unattainable object of desire for millions of hopeful women. Aine was a young and naive lyricist who suddenly found herself in the middle of a raucous rock 'n' roll circus. The two lovers fell into each other's arms one night and tried their best to keep the torrid affair private.

Now, in a press conference that surprises everyone, Sakuya publicly declares his love for the petite towhead songstress. But Aine, much to Sakuya's chagrin, is far from happy.

Although she loves him madly, Aine is worried about her future with the intense and reedy superstar. Suffering in silence, she's been waking up with morning sickness. The world of rock'n'roll is no place for children and Aine is afraid that a spawn of Lucifer will cool the heat that Sakuya feels for her.

5 out of 5 stars It's SHOUJO for god sake.......2006-03-31

For Phlaw "Djuana Kearney" up there, this is a Shoujo manga... the plot is pretty simple but the author is trying to make it more erotic for MATURE readers. Sakuya and AINE is supposed to make a fantasy for readers (for Females) to get a little entertainment from real life. If you're going to give it a bad rating, at least give a good enough reason not just "buff males stealing aine, hot females stealing sakuya" because again, this is shoujo not shoujen and it's pointless smut. Like almost every other shoujos. I love this series because it is a fun read. It's not so graphic, but it does show some kind of nudity. Mature minds or age level! Other than that, if you're into pointless smut, sexy characters (Aine could be better lol), and just somethign to do, pick up this manga and start catching up! There's 13!

5 out of 5 stars Great as always.......2006-03-10

I love this series and will continue to buy every volume of it that is created. The characters are great (and cute) and there are mini stories in addition to the mail ones.

5 out of 5 stars best book ever, no matter what anyone says!!.......2006-03-06

this book may contain images of a man and woman screwing (yes i said screwing!) but people choose to read this book! it is rated M for mature audiences and if you feel you are mature enough to read a love story book that has sexual scenes in it than read it! i dislike it when people say "oh well this book is sheer pronography" well i say "so fricken what!" if somebody out there doesnt like this book then dont read it!! simple as that! and yes the girl is somewhat unattractive but not everyone on this planet is drop dead gorgeous!! i as a matter of fact happen to like this manga very much and i relate to the character in the book! sometimes a woman needs to feel loved and wanted and what-not and so-forth. it relates to every girls fantasy that a guy will rescue you when you feel you need to be rescued and love you unconditionally! its an amazing book and i truely love and cherish every book i own!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the world of brown-collar employment.......2007-03-01

Okay, so almost every story is British. Big whoop. If you've ever worked a McJob, you can identify. Mostly.

Welcome to 100 of the nastiest jobs you've ever heard of, the kind you couldn't pay Mike Rowe to profile. Maggot wrangler. Pie-hole puncher (even less interesting than it sounds). Chili sauce bottler. Editorial assistant (one wonders from her story if she wasn't singlehandedly responsible for the nickname "Grauniad"). Door to door salesman (one of which involved the supervisor passing out free lines of cocaine to whoever was falling asleep on their feet). It's all bad news, and good reading. (It would probably go nicely with a copy of Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.)

One downside: the cartoonist, who signs as Gwyn, is awful -- utterly lacking in artistic talent, and with no discernible sense of humor. Thus a 4-star review rather than 5-star.

        1 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Foul.......2006-08-18

From the cover, I expected more of a light-hearted, humorous look at situations in which employment is less than ideal. Instead, I found that while some anecdotes are funny, the book is largely unentertaining and quite literally filled with obscenities, especially the cartoons. This one is going to the used book store ASAP, and if they don't want it, the dumpster will do fine.

            Book Description

Can films about black characters, produced by white filmmakers, be considered "black films"? In answering this question, Mark Reid reassesses black film history, carefully distinguishing between films controlled by blacks and films that utilize black talent, but are controlled by whites. Previous black film criticism has "buried" the true black film industry, Reid says, by concentrating on films that are about, but not by, blacks.
Reid's discussion of black independent films--defined as films that focus on the black community and that are written, directed, produced, and distributed by blacks--ranges from the earliest black involvement at the turn of the century up through the civil rights movement of the Sixties and the recent resurgence of feminism in black cultural production. His critical assessment of work by some black filmmakers such as Spike Lee notes how these films avoid dramatizations of sexism, homophobia, and classism within the black community.
In the area of black commercial film controlled by whites, Reid considers three genres: African-American comedy, black family film, and black action film. He points out that even when these films use black writers and directors, a black perspective rarely surfaces.
Reid's innovative critical approach, which transcends the "black-image" language of earlier studies--and at the same time redefines black film--makes an important contribution to film history. Certain to attract film scholars, this work will also appeal to anyone interested in African-American and Women's Studies.

2 out of 5 stars way too complicated!.......2004-03-21

if youve got your own lab and some good glassware and a firm chemistry knowledge and you want to experiment then this book is for you. but if you just want to make some hash oil, then there are easier (and safer) ways than described in this book. save your $$ and search google for "+BHO 'butane honey oil'" insted of buying this book.

2 out of 5 stars Forget about acetate extraction!.......2003-08-12

Even though this book is somewhat good it certainly does not increase potency. In Chapter 1 alone the author is telling the grower to preheat cannabis in an oven so it crumbles easier. This only destroys some of the much need cannabinoids that you want. Just dry your harvest in a dark room away from any light and you will be able to crumble up your cannabis is no time. Then following this the author starts to describe how cannabis should be pounded into powder. Sorry but this book is supposed to be about high quality cannabinoid extraction and it does not really serve anybody with this kind of interest... but it will tell you have to extract THC from cannabis... or at least some of it!

What the author neglects to tell you is that it is very important to begin with the right genetics. If you have a plant that produces below average potent buds then no matter what you do you will only end up with average potent cannabis oil. This book is alright I supposed because it will get you there but I highly recommend The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Green for better information on cannabis oil extraction using butane (a very simple and safe process) or by water extraction to produce full melt hashish. The acetate extraction method described in this book is now somewhat obsolete. I just use the acetate process in cleaning out my butane extraction instruments for oil residue. The full melt water extraction technique is the way to go though. That is the true extraction method of the pros.

                    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2001-10-23

I enjoyed reading this book, found lots of good information in it that i was able to make easy sense out of (only grade 12 chemistry) i think this would be a great book for the novice or Advanced growers, as i'm sure they could find some intresting stuff in it

                    4 out of 5 stars and more..........2001-08-07

excellent intro to the art, however, the author is a bit dated, as any net search will show you how to do the butane extraction of pot to get gold honey oil. Nuke the oil in a microwave with acetic acid (photo shop) on the lowest power setting with a glass of water side by side in there (absorbs excess energy) for 10 minutes, and you have the thc acetate w/out blowing yourself up...

enjoy, and buy the book it's great!

5 out of 5 stars AAN EXCELLENT WEALTH OF INFORMATION, BUT.............2000-12-24

This book deals with the process of turning regular everyday herb into both hash oil and hashish. It is very detailed and practical. As such it is geared only to those interested in undertaking such a process. The process Gold describes in it DOES WORK and the potency increaces between 6 times (for pure crude extract) and 32 times (for acetated and isomerized extract) are in the opinion of this author accurate.

As helpful as this book is however, it is incomplete without its compendium: Dr. ATomic's Marijuana Multiplier. The reason for this is that unless the reader is a chemist, Canabis Alchemy is very difficult to follow. Even thought the diagrams in it are well illustrated, understanding some of the simple alchemy reactions described in them is very difficult to the lay person - if not impossible. This is where Dr. Atomic's Marijuana Multiplier comes in. It is akin to an Idiots Guide to Canabis Alchemy. Its chapter layout is almost identical to Canabis ALchemy. Best of all, it's written in a cartioonish fashion with words that the reader can easily follow (instead of chemical symbols). It even describes how to make the edible fomrs of hash that really work!

As mentioned above, when read together the process mentioned in both books works and a reader (with basic HS education) can figure out how to go about the 28 hour alchemy / isomerization process to obtain very potent oil / hash with a potency of about 6 to 12 times stronger on the Adams scale than regular everyday Mary Jane! As simple as the process is however, it is unlikely that a non-chemist could make the very high acetate rotaional herb oil (13 to 32 times more potent) that Gold explains in his book. This is because this final step involves an artificial atmosphere to be created behind a blast proof plexi glass cage. I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have a ton of experience in chemistry labs.

Finally, the process described in both books results in a yeild (by vloume) of between 25%-30% of extracted THC / pulp canabidiol from regular Mary Jane. In other words, 10 grams of herb would give you between 2.5 and 3 grams of consumable decadence. As for the supplies needed, almost all the ones mentioned in both books can be acquired pretty easily. The only drawback is that the entire process is VERY labor intensive. For some really incredible smoke expect about 30 hours of pretty well continous work. The benefits are the increase in potency, the far less toxins ingested and some incredible bragging right :)

                      Book Description

A wise and inspiring exploration of the connection between money and leading a fulfilling life.

This compelling and fundamentally liberating book shows us that examining our attitudes toward money—earning it, spending it, and giving it away—can offer surprising insight into our lives, our values, and the essence of prosperity.

Lynne Twist is a global activist and fund-raiser who has raised more than $150 million in individual contributions for charitable causes. Through personal stories and practical advice, she demonstrates how we can replace feelings of scarcity, guilt, and burden with experiences of sufficiency, freedom, and purpose. She shares from her own life, a journey illuminated by remarkable encounters with the richest and poorest people on earth, from the famous (Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama) to the anonymous but unforgettable heroes of everyday life.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment and a Waste of Time.......2007-07-18

I will keep this very brief as I don't want to waste your time like the way I wasted mine by reading this book.
                      Key Points of the author:
                      - Align your transactions with your morals
                      - Scarcity is not real. Believe in sufficiency
                      - Focus on the qualitative aspects of life, like relationships

That is pretty much it. The book is a VERY touchy-feely book filled with her real life examples of volunteering with Third World countries and how deep down in peoples' souls is where fulfillment lies, not in materialistic goods. Some of the things she says and suggests borders on socialist doctrine.

If you are looking for a way to better understand yourself, happiness, and the role money plays, I suggest you look into the field of positive psychology. Money has diminishing marginal returns...in other words, the guy who earns $500,000 is not 10X happier than the guy who earns $50,000. With that said, remove yourself from the rat race, be content with the things around you, don't focus so much on tomorrow, and dedicate yourself (career/volunteer) to something you believe in. That simple equation is more valid and will transform your life more than this entire book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Life-Changing.......2007-01-10

Lynne Twist has written a very inspiring book that can totally tranform one's relationship with money and self.

5 out of 5 stars Great: Move over Jerry Mander! Spirit values live.......2007-01-10

This wokderful lady adds the spirt to the money. She has accomplished much in the world, so this is not a "how to" book that is for the purpose of making money for the writer, but one whom I know lives the life and walks the talk.

4 out of 5 stars The Soul of Money: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Life.......2006-11-03

I enjoyed the book and recommended it to friends. Lynn Twist offers up lots of food for thought on ways to view money and how to spend money so that it makes a difference in the world.
