Book Description

Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was one of the most popular British book illustrators of the Victorian era. A contemporary of Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane, she attracted a wide audience in the United States and England, and many of her books were even translated into German and French.
One of Greenaway's early successes was Mother Goose, or the Old Nursery Rhymes, first published in 1881, featuring such favorite poems as "Little Jack Horner," "Little Bo Peep," and "Jack and Jill" paired with whimsical illustrations of children playing in an idyllic countryside. Her enchanting watercolors evoked the urban Victorian reader's nostalgia for the rural life of earlier times and echoed Greenaway's own longing to retreat to a more tranquil setting than her native London.
This new edition of Kate Greenaway's Mother Goose reproduces illustrations from the rare 1881 edition in the Huntington Library's collections. The Huntington owns an extensive collection of books illustrated by Greenaway, several of her manuscripts, and nearly one hundred of her original drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Kate Greenaway's Mother Goose Coloring Book.......2001-09-21

Great book. I expected alot from something with Kate Greenaways work and I was not disappointed. This colouring book isn't for the little ones, but more of an appeal for the bigger kids...my teenager and I are already choosing which pages we want to do. I love them.

4 out of 5 stars Mother Goose art for the Older Child.......2000-09-19

This coloring book has beautiful pictures drawn from the artwork of Kate Greenaway. Adults and older children will enjoy the detailed work necessary for coloring these Mother Goose rhymes. The format lends itself to colored pencils rather than crayons due to the fineness of the artwork. The drawings evoke a bygone era which would be appreciated more by a more mature audience. Younger children would doubtless enjoy a simpler Mother Goose to color than that presented in this coloring book.

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book.......2007-01-09

My son loves the Simpsons and wasn't too into reading. I thought what better way to get him into reading than buying him books about his beloved Simpsons. Sure enough he sat down with it and read it cover to cover without getting off the couch.

4 out of 5 stars gotta luv the Simpsons! this comic book is great!.......2006-07-06

Woo-hoo!!! All right! a Simpsons comic book! me and my bud both luv the Simpsons TV show and when my friend had seen a Simpsons comic book she just had to have it. so i took the liberty of ordering it off of here b/c you get it so much cheeper than at the store. she luved it and so did i.

it has several small stories w/ the same laughs and crazy adventures the yellow family goes thru on TV. and if youre very familiar w/ the characters youll notice their small quirks and way of talking...like Dr Hibert and his laugh at the end of his sentences...ah hee hee hee hee!!! ;-D

one of my friends favorites was "Homer vs. the Wallpaper"...typical Homer trying to "do it himself", redoing maggies bedroom walls and creates a bunch of laughs getting tangled up in wallpaper and glue...great fun!

it is a rather quick read, but its good for a laugh or two (heck more than that!). if youre looking for something new to read whenever get this book and enjoy!

ps if anyone has read a comic in any of the Simpsons comic books that has Sideshow Bob in them please put it in your review! i do anything to see that crazy red-hair jail bird go after Bart again! lol

                    4 out of 5 stars "A Where's Waldo book written by the Devil"---Ned Flanders.......2005-05-14

Belly Buster is another solid Simpsons comic book with the same type of art and humor you get from the television shows. There are a lot of shorts in this one but, for the most part, the comics offer good story lines with lots of typical Simpsons satire.

"Maggie Come Home": Lisa joins a demanding baby sitter union and Maggie ends up caught in the middle. A familiar person ends up behind the union mess. A fun, original comic.
"Storeroom Raider": Lisa must go into the school storeroom to fetch some chalk; a storeroom from which two students failed to return. Short but has a funny ending.
"What Would Possibly Happen if Cletus Went to College": Short about Springfield's "slack-jawed yokel." Can a "common man" save a financially-challenged university?
"Bart & Lisa & Marge & Homer & Maggie (to a lesser extent) vs. Thanksgiving": Follow each Simpson on his/her Thanksgiving adventure. Very contrived at the end but moderately amusing and creative.

"The Beer Boys": Homer takes over Moe's while Moe undergoes a gallstone operation. Feeling he is now "somebody," Homer starts his own bar. Ends abruptly but is still funny.
"Around Town w/ Ned Flanders": Ned is supposed to show us different sites in Springfield but his plans are abruptly cut short. This comic had possibilities but I think it came up as short as its 4 pages.
"Bart in `Fork it Over'": One-page short featuring Bart, Nelson, and Milhouse in the school cafeteria.
"Tanks for Nothing": Gampa gets a tank from the government in exchange for forfeiting unpaid back veteran benefits. The owner of the Shelbyville Nuclear Power Plant, Aristotle Amadopolis, who you may remember from the TV episode "Homer Defined," sees the tank parked at the Springfield plant and accuses Mr. Burns of breaking their arms treaty. Will their be a nuclear war? In this comic we get a glimpse of Mindy from the "Last Temptation of Homer" (I did not know she still worked there).
"Homer vs. the Wallpaper": In this 4-page short, Homer tries to put up Krusty wallpaper (with Krusty wallpaper paste, of course) in Bart's room and failing to "book" the paper isn't his only problem. Since when does Bart call him "Homeslice" and "Homefries"?
"Picture Perfect": Someone is graffiti-tagging the neighbor (I wonder who that could be?). Groundskeeper Willie is the hero in this 4-page short.

"Siege on Evergreen Terrace": Flanders prepaid for a pool to be built in his backyard while he was away. When the pool guys mistakenly go to Homer's house, Homer pretends to be Ned to get the free pool. After the pool is installed, Flanders alerts the pool builders of the mistake. Rather than give up the pool, Homer and his pool buddies stage a stand-off (at one point, the pool builders try to break the compound's spirits by blasting Kajagoogoo).
"Duff Daddy": An advertising agency for Duff beer hires Barney and Homer to do a Fruity Pebbles style commercial. This comic is lame.
"Ned Flanders in Blind Luck": A 4-page short where widower Ned takes a skanky gal on a date. The shooting range they go to is endorsed by "Charlton Heston of the NRA and Allen Iverson of the NBA."
"The Yes-Man Who Would Be King": Smithers might be the sole heir to the Swedish throne and the people of Springfield begin asking for his kingly advice: "Liberte, Egalite, Malibu Stacia."

                        5 out of 5 stars FUNNY!.......2007-01-10

For those of you down in the dumps, this is a good book to look at and poke fun at yourself and your problems. I gave this as a tongue-in-cheek book, and the results were hilarious.

1 out of 5 stars Not thick enough to stop a bullet, but just enough to read.......2006-11-01

I got this book as a gift in June. I had suffered an accident while unloading a truck. A huge printer slipped and fell onto my leg, which put me into the hospital for about a week while I had a few operations done. I was hoping this book would help me pass the time, but the dark heart that wrote this shed no light upon the world and only continued to showcase all that is wrong in the world. I was hoping it would be a little bit uplifting, but it's not, and to top it off, it's not funny either. The title is witty, but that's where the inventiveness stopped with this book. Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Terribly lacking in humor, writing skill, and planning..........2006-04-13

The stories in this book were advertised as being incredibly funny but they AREN'T. The only funny part was the title of this book. This could have been such a funny and entertaining read if it weren't for the poor planning and lousy writing skills. The writer is lacking in the most important area of all and that's called "talent". This book gets a big fat "F". It's a safe wager to make that the author, Mr. Fisher, also got "F's" on his What I Did On My Summer Vacation essays in school.

Isn't it funny how the positive reviews come from "A READER" and not Amazon certified "REAL NAME"? That certainly says it all. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Save your money and don't buy this one. It is not in the least funny and I can't believe this even got published.

If you've had enough of all those nauseating sugar frosted "self help" books that flood the market, try this one! A true curmudgeon's choice. Biting sarcasm and satire, (For those of you in Rio Linda, that means it's mocking) it warms the cockles of my jaded heart. There is more than a little truth in these tales for the cynical. In fact, this would be a good primer for those who don't have a grip on reality, but would like to try it. Face it, LIFE STINKS! A few cartoons would have been a nice touch, but you can't have everything.(I won't give up trying to GET everything) For those of you who are offended by this book, I'll speak very slowly so even YOU can understand it, IT'S HUMOR.

                          Book Description

This book examines the dynamic relationship between cinema, the most important cultural form, and the city, the most important form of social organization, since World War Two, in an exciting new way.

Bringing together such disciplines as Film studies, Sociology, Urban Studies and Geography, the book focuses on:

the active role of film production, distribution and exhibition in the physical growth and identity formation of cities worldwide

the integral role of cinema in the contemporary global economy

the relationship between the uneven development of cities and their film cultures

the ways in which different forms of power and resistance, social organization and urban structure may be imagined and articulated in film and its political economy

The case-studies presented range from postmodern cities such as Los Angeles to the colonial and post-colonial. Specific attention is devoted to the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

                            Book Description

Ritual trance has always been closely associated with music—but why, and how? Gilbert Rouget offers and extended analysis of music and trance, concluding that no universal law can explain the relations between music and trance; they vary greatly and depend on the system of meaning of their cultural context.

Rouget rigorously examines a worldwide corpus of data from ethnographic literature, but he also draws on the Bible, his own fieldwork in West Africa, and the writings of Plato, Ghazzali, and Rousseau. To organize this immense store of information, he develops a typology of trance based on symbolism and external manifestations. He outlines the fundamental distinctions between trance and ecstasy, shamanism and spirit possession, and communal and emotional trance. Music is analyzed in terms of performers, practices, instruments, and associations with dance. Each kind of trance draws strength from music in different ways at different points in a ritual, Rouget concludes. In possession trance, music induces the adept to identify himself with his deity and allows him to express this identification through dance.

Forcefully rejecting pseudo-science and reductionism, Rouget demystifies the so-called theory of the neurophysiological effects of drumming on trance. He concludes that music's physiological and emotional effects are inseparable from patterns of collective representations and behavior, and that music and trance are linked in as many ways as there are cultural structures.

Samples over all the world's tribes (candomblè), links with sciamanism, tarantism, misterism, mystic ecstasy, obsession and mania, from old greece to modern Brasil, Africa. Againsts: too exaustive, it perhaps lacks of a sinthetic conclusion.

As a step dancer with limited exposure to set dancing, I found this book a wonderful introduction. Although I cannot personally vouch for the accuracy of his notation, I know/ have heard of several who do. In any case, it is well written and researched.... An excellent historical guide. Probably the best Irish dance (step or set) book sold on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Toss the Feathers: Bible of Set Dancers.......1999-12-14

_Toss the Feathers_ is the definitive book on Irish set dancing. I bought a copy in Galway City, and it has saved me innumerable times. I carry it with me to all classes and ceilis; it's well-worn and well-loved. Besides the most common sets, Pat gives us notes for beautiful and obscure local dances. His introduction also includes an illuminating history of set dancing. Beware: you will not teach yourself to dance from this book if you have no prior knowledge of set dancing. However, it is ideal for supplementing your knowledge from classes. When two set dancers disagree on the "correct" version of a set, one inevitably pulls out a copy of Pat's book, and his judgement is trusted. All of us set dancing addicts are awaiting the upcoming sequel. Buy it now! You'll never regret this useful reference on bad days when you can't even remember how the Ballyvourney Jig Set begins.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for those who set dance!.......1999-09-01

This book is great for anyone who set dances but hasn't yet memorized all of the moves (-most of us?!). Not intended for people who have never set danced before. You need to be familiar with the jargon, such as "round the house", "ladies chain", etc.

                                5 out of 5 stars buy it.......1999-03-14

This is the best. If you want a reference for dancing, the one the teachers use, this is it. Buy it. There is none better.

4 out of 5 stars _Toss the Feathers_ a very useful resource.......1999-01-26

Pat Murphy's _Toss the Feathers_ is the most useful guide to set dancing I have come across. During my nine months dancing in Northern Ireland, _Toss the Feathers_ was the book that my teachers used to check for technicalities, and the book I used to brush up on my steps on my way to ceilis. I heartily recommend this book to people who know about set dancing, and want to check their steps or sets. However, I do not recommend this book to newcomers, because Murphy's language is overly technical. For example, to turn someone under your arm, you have to rotate them in a counterclockwise manner until they reach 360 degrees, etc. :) I'm exaggerating. But this book is a definite must-have for those who love set dancing, especially when they're away from Ireland. Like me. Cheers go to Pat Murphy.

Men ask for what they want twice as often as women do and initiate negotiation four times more, report economist Linda Babcock and writer Sara Laschever in the footnoted but engaging Women Don't Ask. With vivid research examples drawn from cradle, classroom and playground, the authors detail culture as the culprit in discouraging women from negotiating on their own behalf.

Men, socialized in a "scrappier paradigm," learn to pursue and energize their goals at work and home. The two key elements are control and recognizing opportunity. For example, girls, rewarded for hard work, learn to see control as outside of themselves while boys are urged to take charge. Boys are schooled to recognize opportunity and girls to choose safe targets.

Several chapters are focused on prescription; how women can decrease anxiety, anticipate roadblocks, plan counter-moves and resist conceding too much or too soon. The authors shine in their examination of culture and gender--and their optimism about how women can counter the culture. They falter whenever they adopt the "sexes-from-a-different-planet" fallacy. Most notably, in a chapter that details a "female approach" to negotiating. Overall, the authors have created a smart summary of research and used it to affirm every woman's urgent right to ask. --Barbara Mackoff

                                Book Description

When Linda Babcock asked why so many male graduate students were teaching their own courses and most female students were assigned as assistants, her dean said: "More men ask. The women just don't ask." It turns out that whether they want higher salaries or more help at home, women often find it hard to ask. Sometimes they don't know that change is possible--they don't know that they can ask. Sometimes they fear that asking may damage a relationship. And sometimes they don't ask because they've learned that society can react badly to women asserting their own needs and desires.

By looking at the barriers holding women back and the social forces constraining them, Women Don't Ask shows women how to reframe their interactions and more accurately evaluate their opportunities. It teaches them how to ask for what they want in ways that feel comfortable and possible, taking into account the impact of asking on their relationships. And it teaches all of us how to recognize the ways in which our institutions, child-rearing practices, and unspoken assumptions perpetuate inequalities--inequalities that are not only fundamentally unfair but also inefficient and economically unsound.

With women's progress toward full economic and social equality stalled, women's lives becoming increasingly complex, and the structures of businesses changing, the ability to negotiate is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Drawing on research in psychology, sociology, economics, and organizational behavior as well as dozens of interviews with men and women from all walks of life, Women Don't Ask is the first book to identify the dramatic difference between men and women in their propensity to negotiate for what they want. It tells women how to ask, and why they should.

I am interviewing for a post-graduate job and I asked a successful woman in my field for some negotiating advice. She recommended this book. Ironically, I always considered myself a good negotiator. Yet, as I read this book, it mirrored so many situations where I made tactical negotiation mistakes with regards to my own personal gain. A must read for women, in any stage of their career.

This book is full of eye-opening thoughts that I found so crucial to my own sense of empowerment as I faced post-graduate school job negotiation opportunities. There are so many things I would never have thought of as options to set on the negotiating table, not to mention so many things about how I behave, what my expectations are for myself, and how they differ from those of a typical male perspective. Even though I am educated in a human social science field and consider myself a liberal woman, I had A LOT to learn from this book. I liked the mix of examples of diverse individual women's experiences along with data from the authors' and others' relevant studies.

I love this book! A must read for any career woman. It was recommended by my mentor at work. I wish I had read it earlier in my career, but I'm thankful I've read it now.

Women Don't Ask is a book that attempts to discover the reasons behind the documented inequity between women and men in the workplace. The book is especially interested in the reasons that women are paid less than men for the same work. The authors' basic conclusion is that women get paid less and get promoted less because not only do they not ask for more pay, pay raises, and promotions, but because they are conditioned to expect less.

The book is not judgmental nor does it make sweeping generalizations, but rather cites many case studies as well as research experiments that prove that women are less likely to negotiate than men. The book explores the many cultural factors that condition women to avoid negotiation while encouraging men to negotiate. The authors do not blame or complain--they merely explore the reasons that women, of all ages, are less likely to negotiate in the workplace. For example, the authors note that young girls are usually given indoor chores around the house, such as doing dishes and vacuuming. Young boys, on the other hand, are more likely to be assigned chores such as mowing the lawn, washing cars, and shoveling the driveway. The authors point out that the types of jobs that boys are given are ones that can be used to make money--boys will be able to offer to mow lawns for neighbors for a fee, a fee that usually is negotiated. The types of household chores that girls are given, however, are not usually done for neighbors for a fee. Therefore, boys often learn to negotiate for pay from a young age.

The authors also look at some of the real and perceived negative consequences when women do negotiate that make women's negotiation ineffective and unsuccessful.

This book can help women to understand their fear of negotiation, help men to understand why they sometimes feel taken aback by a woman who negotiates, and help women to find ways to be more comfortable and confident in their negotiation skills.

I found this book extremely beneficial in that it helps me to understand why others around me act as they do, and I can see how these behaviors are shaped by so many aspects of our culture rather than by one gender being "right" or "wrong," "good" or "bad." Kudos to these authors for shedding light on such a neglected topic.

I just felt that this book only told about the situation, (which I do find is the case in my experience as a women--basically I shut down when it comes to negotiation, and my boyfriend welcomes it, saying that "everything is negotiable". Problem is shown, without any real solutions--basically some people are more assertive than others I guess. Thanks anyway.
