Book Description

In this anthology of twelve essays, editor Suzanne Lacy and eleven eminent artists, curators, and critics forge a critical framework for understanding and interpreting the new public art that has emerged over the last two decades. Mapping the Terrain departs from traditional definitions of public art and explores how the new public art reaches diverse audiences to address issues of race, gender, homelessness, ecology, and urbanization. Also included in this publication is a useful illustrated compendium that chronicles the work of over ninety pioneering new genre public artists. Mapping the Terrain makes an invaluable contribution to the continuing debate about public art and how it can be meaningfully woven into our social fabric. 4 out of 5 stars Raising questions about the purpose of public art........1999-01-11

In Suzanne Lacy's Mapping the Terrain: New Genre Public Art, authors espouse continuity and responsibility through community-based public art works, collaborative practices among artists and their audiences, and the engagement of multiple audiences through empathy and appreciation. Their sense of new genre public art builds on exposure, deconstruction, and rejection of modernism's constructs and myths. Throughout these essays terms such as "community", "consensus", "truth", "good", and "multiple voices" are used to propagate a genre of public art that is dematerialized and progressive. Yet, it is not realistic to assume that consensus and community will always be progressive forces. This book raises more questions than it answers. Such as; can an artist go too far in the direction of consensus and community? Isn't there danger in not recognizing the tensions and conflicts within any group interaction (small community) for the sense of consensus (common good). Do the multiple voices include those that do not label the project "art?" Do these, and other public art projects have the potential to fall back into the modernist trap of being seen as a fraud, a hoax, or a loss of craft, in which audiences are insulted? Are these projects art because an artist was involved, and what happens to that role if the artist is simply a conduit for other voices? Can the artist speak for communities from which the artist does not belong (is it better to utilize local artists from within the communities)?

But her wit, charm and intelligence just may help her survive through another day. Thrust into the midst of a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels, has Jessica burned too many bridges to turn to old friends for help? 4 out of 5 stars a great read.......2006-11-14

some of bendis' better writing, it captures the essential noir experience with a superhero spin. This volume is certainly the best way to collect the series, as its cheaper than buying the trades individually.

    5 out of 5 stars Jessica Jones -- Catalyst to Marvel's Past.......2006-10-16

One of BMB's strengths is the ability to make old characters who have previously been put out to pasture cool again. He did it with Luke Cage, 70's street-cred Hero for Hire. He did it with Jessica Drew, the first Spider-Woman (and to some small extent, Maddie Franklin, a newer incarnation of Spider-Woman). He even did it with Speedball, a wacky Steve Ditko creation. Hell, he even made Alan Quartermain cool! You'll find all these comeback characters in the pages of "Alias", detailing the adventures of Jessica Jones, an ex-superhero with origins firmly rooted in Silver Age storytelling. Along with the above-mentioned characters, you're treated to her friendship with Carol Danvers and her dating struggles with Scott Lang.

This oversized, hardcovered volume collects the entire "Alias" series, including the "What If...?" issue that compliments the series. Take the time to savor this collection, as it's a rare treat in comic book literature that you're unlikely to see again anytime soon. This is Bendis at his best, writing what he loves. The stunning Gaydos art sets the tone for the series, and only improves with each issue.

Though the series only lasts 28 issues, Jessica's story continues in "The Pulse". It's my hope that Marvel collects those issues and relevant tie-ins in a handsome Omnibus volume.

Worth the $, lives up to the hype. If you need a comic in which a supervillian gets fubared every other page, this isn't for you. If you like excellent character development, excellent plot, excellent dialogue, great art, pick this up. One of the best books I've read from Marvel, also one of Bendis' best work. Again, not the normal formulaic stuff, this is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Bendis Book I've Read.......2006-05-06

It's strange how such an important comic can be so relatively obscure. This is the book responsible for launching Marvel's MAX imprint, which is pretty much their answer to DC's wonderful Vertigo line. Not only is Alias responsible for MAX, but it introduces us to Jessica Jones and is a very intriguinjg read as well.
Written by Brian Michael Bendis, the 28 issues of Alias tell the story of Jessica Jones, a former superhero who hung up her cape after deciding that she didn't have what it takes to be a hero. Her powers, which include superstrenght and flight, are good, but nothing special. Furthermore, she is too self-destructive; she doesn't believe in herself and she has tons of personal issues, going all the way back to her high school days. Even her "origin story" gives her reason to doubt herself. Now she runs Alias Investigations, a private detective agency. Her cases take her to the darker side of the Marvel universe that don't usually get shown in the mainstream books live The Avengers or The Fantastic Four. The first case we see her on shows her finding a missing woman... who just so happens to be sleeping with none other than Captain America! Another case has her tracking down a missing girl who is rumored to be a mutant. However, she learns that there may be more to the story when she discovers that the town the girl went missing in is full of racists who hate everyone from Jews to mutants.
Along the way, we are given hints of Jessica's past. Her relationship with best friend Carol Danvers (whoose aliases include Ms. Marvel) is dysfunctional at best, she has angry sex with Luke Cage, and begins dating Scott Lang/Ant-Man, another hero with a questionable past, and the relationship is a rollercoaster for both. Occasionally, she acts as bodyguard for Matt Murdock, who had just been outed in the press as Daredevil.
Eventually, Jessica confesses the story of her origin to Cage, and the tale of how she got her powers is heartbreaking. Furthermore, she describes her early adventures as the superhero Jewel, and how an encounter with the mind-controlling Purple Man had lasting consequences on her mental state and which nearly led to a crisis with the Avengers.
Bendis' stories are very well-written and engaging. Jessica's cases are interesting, but it's her personality that is truly captivating. She smokes and drinks heavily for someone who once made it her job to protect people, and her relationships with others are very unhealthy. The fact that the book is published under the R-rated MAX imprint allows people to fully "express" their feelings through the ability to use hard-core swearing (and Bendis doens't hold back on the cussing). It turns out that the superheroes of the Marvel universe can have some pretty dirty mouths. As for the art, it takes some getting used to. I admit that it fits the dark and gritty tone of the story, but there were times when I wasn't sure what was going on.
This HUGE omnibus collects all 28 issues of the series in addition to the What If...? issue detailing what would have happened if Jones had joined the Avengers. While I really enjoyed the 28 issues of Alias, the What If...? issue was only OK, and (SPOILER!!) I find it very hard to believe that Jessica could have single-handedly prevented the events of Avengers: Disassembled. Still, it's enjoyable enough to see Jessica happy in a completely different environment.
This book is expensive, but it's pretty worth it. In addition to 29 issues presented in oversized format, we are treated to sketches, an interview with Bendis, Bendis' pitch for the series, and an introduction from Allen Heinberg, writer for The OC and creator/writer of Young Avengers.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Bendis' best work.......2006-03-31

Forget House of M, forget his monumental run on Daredevil, and forget his long run on Ultimate Spider-Man; Brian Michael Bendis was at his best with Alias. No, it has nothing to do with the show of the same name; Alias was the first title under Marvel's mature themed MAX line, and it shows the gifted writer at his very best. The series introduces us to Jessica Jones, a former Avenger turned private investigator who has her share of problems. Her personal life is in shambles because of her mysterious past and job. She's a so-so alcoholic and chain smoker. She has one night stands with Luke Cage. She goes on a date with Scott "Ant-Man" Lang. Needless to say she's not the typical Marvel heroine, and that's why Alias worked. It shows us the grittier underbelly of the Marvel universe in this collection. From Jessica stumbling upon a murder and a plot involving the secret identity of Captain America, to her traveling upstate to find a missing mutant girl; this all leads up to the excellent conclusion where Jessica's past is revealed, and she comes face to face with the once laughable Purple Man: a master of mind control who in Bendis' hands becomes one of the most fearsome villains in recent memory. There's nothing to not like about Alias if you're a Marvel fan, and Michael Gaydos' artwork is as gritty and Bendis' storytelling. This massive collection collects all 28 issues of Alias, as well as Bendis and Gaydos' new age What If? one-shot in which Jessica Jones remains an Avenger, and her life takes a very different turn, and there's some nice extras here as well. Alias also re-vitalized former Hero for Hire Luke Cage, as well as current Spider-Woman Jessica Drew; both of which have become favorite characters of Bendis. All in all, if you are a die hard fan of the series and either missed some issues or don't own the TPB's, this is definitely worth the price tag.

5 out of 5 stars A Comedic Book Not to Be Taken Too Seriously.......2006-02-13

Tim Allen gives some insight into his own life while treating the reader like just another guy working on the car and telling stories. It's not a serious work, and Tim Allen isn't promoting the degradation of women. He's simply telling jokes that many men in our society can relate to, and I had a lot of fun reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Allen -- Don't Stand Too Close To A Naked Man.......2006-01-25

This book was about the funniest book that I have ever read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking for a laugh and just has a general curiosity about what made Tim Allen the man he is today, a must read.

I liked this book. I thought it was pretty funny at times. His humor was different than in his show. In the book he was more crude. In addition to being funny, he also provides some personal insight into how he really is.

              Book Description

On every level -- writing, direction, acting -- Double Indemnity (1944) is a triumph and stands as one of the greatest achievements in Billy Wilder's career. Adapted from the James M. Cain novel by director Wilder and novelist Raymond Chandler, it tells the story of an insurance salesman, played by Fred MacMurray, who is lured into a murder-for-insurance plot by Barbara Stanwyck, in an archetypal femme fatale role. From its grim story to its dark, atmospheric lighting, Double Indemnity is a definitive example of World War II-era film noir. Wilder's approach is everywhere evident: in the brutal cynicism the film displays, the moral complexity, and in the empathy we feel for the killers. The film received almost unanimous critical success, garnering seven Academy Award nominations. More than fifty years later, most critics agree that this classic is one of the best films of all time. The collaboration between Wilder and Raymond Chandler produced a masterful script and some of the most memorable dialogue ever spoken in a movie.
This facsimile edition of Double Indemnity contains Wilder and Chandler's original -- and quite different -- ending, published here for the first time. Jeffrey Meyers's introduction contextualizes the screenplay, providing hilarious anecdotes about the turbulent collaboration, as well as background information about Wilder and the film's casting and production.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic script for classic movie.......2007-01-03

Billy Wilder may not have been born in America, but he knew America inside and out, from the vernacular of the ordinary folks to the sleezy ambitions and passions of the middle class. He captured all of that in his brilliant screenplay for DOUBLE INDEMNITY, turning the novel into a masterpiece of what has come to be known as Film Noir. He always stressed structure when he talked about his scripts and this is perfectly structured, tightly coiled like a spring, with the suspense building moment by moment -- along with the decaying relationships. Brilliant.

              5 out of 5 stars A toss-up for Raymond Chandler fans.......2003-01-14

For those who already purchased the Library of America edition of "Raymond Chandler : Later Novels and Other Writings" (which contains the screenplay of "Double Indemnity"), here are two reasons why you should buy THIS edition of the "Double Indemnity" screenplay:

              1. Unlike most other screenplays published in book form, this edition of "Double Indemnity" appears to be a facsimile of the original screenplay; It's not just a book, but a relic of classic film.

              2. This edition also has the alternate/deleted "Gas Chamber" ending which the Library of America edition is lacking.

If it were not for the above two qualities, I would recommend any Chandler fan to purchase the Library of America edition of Chandler's work that contains the "Double Indemnity" screenplay instead of this one. Here's why:

In this edition, Chandler's name does NOT appear on the cover; only Bill Wilder is credited on the cover. However, Chandler's name DOES appear on the title page and first page of the screenplay (the Amazon scans of the book illustrate this curiosity). Why the exclusion of Chandler from the cover?!
Answer: This book was published while Billy Wilder was still alive and he was able to steal the limelight from Raymond Chandler one last time. Well done, Mr. Wilder.

As for the screenplay itself, I've read a lot of screenplays of movies that I have liked and "Double Indemnity" reads better than most. The voice-over dialogue for Neff (written by Chandler) is the best part of the screenplay and is worth having in print. Whether you're a fan of classic Film Noir or an aspiring screenwriter, this is a must-have for your bookshelf. As for Chandler fans, it's only a matter of which edition.

For more information on Raymond Chandler's involvement in "Double Indemnity", I recommend the book "Creatures of Darkness: Raymond Chandler, Detective Fiction, and Film Noir". After reading, you will see why I and other readers are so incensed by the exclusion of Chandler's credit from the cover.

              4 out of 5 stars A brief tangential rant........2002-05-03

Nearly everyone who is likely to view this page knows and loves the movie, and would most likely prefer watching it to reading it. This leaves devoted fans of Wilder and Chandler to consider it, as well as perhaps students of the form.

The screenplay itself is an unquestioned masterpiece, and has not even the movie's very very few faults (poor acting by secondary characters, etc.). So I will limit my comments to my assertion that this edition GREATLY underestimates the contributions of Chandler, going so far as to paint him as a pasty fussbudget ignorant of the craft of writing. Not true, bud, not by a long shot.

Wilder and Chandler got along like cats and dogs. That's no secret. Yet while Chandler had his faults, Wilder seemed to live to antagonize him, and quite uncharitably described him in some comments reprinted here. Saying how the married Chandler envied Wilder for "having all the pretty girls at Paramount" is one example of how cheap and childish the director's opinion of his co-writer was, as stated in this edition, quoting Wilder's bio. Either Wilder or Meyers had some crude bias against Chandler, if the introduction of this tome is to be believed at all. Because it's not even an accurate presentation of what Wilder really felt, as quoted in Chandler's own hit-and-miss bio written by Tom Hiney.

Anyway, much of the *structure* of the screenplay- the flashbacks, the additional scenes, the ebb and flow- is Wilder's tremendous savvy. But the things film historians seem to treasure above all else in this movie are the rapid-fire, crudely poetic, vernacular dialogue, as well as the feeling of cynical decay wrapped around the doomed couple's whole misbegotten endeavor like a shroud. And for those, I propose, Chandler must be given the majority of the credit. His novels are too sad and complex and perfect, providing ample evidence that he could not have been the doofus this book portrays.

There's my speech. Take it for what it's worth. The book is a good buy for serious students. But Chandler fans will be ticked off.

5 out of 5 stars Wilders First Undoubted Masterpiece.......2000-12-11

Double Indemnity is one of Billy Wilders best films. The screenplay is taut and extremely well written. You cannot miss this opportunity to read the master at the top of his game. Among the many highlights is the supermarket scene between the two conspirators. An absolute must read

              5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-09-23

Don't listen to the completely moronic reviews posted here. This is a great book. The authors have done an excellent job researching, providing insight and giving great technical information about each track. There seems to be a lot of crybabying about certain tracks being left out, certain tracks being listed over others--who the hell cares, it's the f'n Beatles, for crying out loud, every song is great, from Yesterday to A Day in the Life, to Revolution #9. This is a book that the casual listener and the rabid fan will love.

4 out of 5 stars Rating Some Memorable Beatles Music!.......2006-05-09

Anyone daring to rate the "music of the Gods" is setting themselves up for a pasting. Authors Stephen Spignesi and Michael Lewis dared the unthinkable and the results are contained in this interesting book on the "100 Best Beatles Songs."

After an introduction on how they arrived at the top 100 - songwriting, musicianship, production, lyrics - Spignesi and Lewis take us song-by-song through their ranking. Number #1 is "A Day in the Life;" #100, "Helter Skelter." Coverage of each song includes what the song is about, why it made the top 100, interesting facts about the song, what the authors most liked about the song, etc.

So, did all my Beatle favorites make the list? No! Am I cheesed off about the rankings? Not especially! Are some of their statements about what a particular song means pretty obvious or reaching for it? Yup! But so what!?! The authors wrote the book and they're entitled to their opinion.

I enjoyed this book. It takes you down a musical road of wonderful songs - lovely ballads, hard rockers and psychedelic head-trips - that enriched our lives. Reading this book is a fun experience.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, insightful read.......2005-09-26

I guess I'm just not enough of a Beatles snob like some of the other folks reviewing this book. I bought it, read it and enjoyed it. Just because the authors' opinion on the song ranking differs from mine, that doesn't make it a bad book, just a difference in opinion. I glad I bought it.

              2 out of 5 stars A great idea for a book wasted.......2005-08-10

As a major Beatles fan, I am a sucker for a book like this. I understand that a book titled the 100 Best whatever is going to be subjective. I don't mind that. (I'm amazed at how many reviewers have criticised this book largely because the authors either included songs the reviewer doesn't like or left out songs the reviewer loves. That's going to happen in any book like this.) However, what we want out of such a book is a critical analysis that true fans can respect. All opinions are not created equal and these two guys have absolutely no meaningful insight into what made Beatles music special.

Perhaps the single greatest indicator as to how fatuous these two guys are is that they attempt to explain what each song is about. They demonstrate that they are either masters of the obvious or as insightful as the average 9th grader. Lyrics that aren't obvious on their face are poetry. If a reviewer has knowledge of first hand experiences that led to the writing of the song or knowledge of allusions in the song, those are worth mentioning. Otherwise, spare us your uninformed "insights." (See their section on the first song, "Day in the Life" for a perfect example.)

The book does have an interesting layout and is easy to skim, and, finally, it is about the Beatles. Hence, it is not worthless, but it is certainly not worth the money. Pass on it.

              1 out of 5 stars the worst.......2005-08-06

This is by far the worst book on the beatles i've ever read and i've read almost all of them. All the great songs left out of this book pisses me off! These two guys are idiots, and the're book sucks!

5 out of 5 stars These are Terrific!.......2006-12-13

I guess you would have to say I'm a New York Times crossword puzzle fanatic. But because this book was edited by Fred Piscop, known to me from his occasional puzzles at the Times, I decided to give a couple volumes of this series a try. Well, I was amply rewarded. These are moderately difficult Sunday puzzles (and you know what I mean if you do the Times Sunday puzzles) which are just enough different from those in the Times that they represented a pleasant challenge for me. Piscop's sense of humor, as seen in the definitions, is unique (and different from that of the NYT's Will Shortz) and I literally found myself laughing out loud at times.

              - are my favourite books! I am sure you will think the same after reading them! Amazing books!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent in some aspects and too much information in another.......2007-07-23

The book is a good introduction to NLP. The part about NLP beliefs is fantastic. On the other hand, it seems the authors lost a little focus of the audience they were writting to and the words sometimes do not fit in what they say at the begining. There are lots and lots of exercises, dozens of history about successfull people, but the way they move the reader towards the exercises and histories is OK, but I wish they had less material and had worked more on rapport with the reader. I guess they put too much material and make the book difficult to follow in one side. On the other side, they have experience and they know a lot. They just should be more gentle with readers (work more in deepness than in material that is outside of the reader world). After all, I believe that's what NLP is about. How about using metaphors? In Summary, good work and should improve next time. Hope they can can do it.

3 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great.......2007-05-24

The CD is very good. I found the subject matter very interesting. I tried it and I actually changed some of the old negative memories and thoughts in a very short period of time. I just wish the the people presenting the material we a little more enthusiastic.

5 out of 5 stars Great resources and an easy read.......2007-03-06

As a life coach and NLPMP, this is one of the most comprehensive books about NLP that I have read. Not only does it lead you through what NLP is, it also guides you through some exercises that can abseloutly change your mind about what is important to you, what your vision is, and what you want to pursue in life. In short, this book may not change your life, it will change your life. How much will be up to you.

The authors have a great way with words and explain things in a very easy way, anyone should be able to learn something from this book and get an understanding of NLP. If you are just being introduced to NLP this book will jump you further into what it can do. If you have some experience with NLP this book will really get you going and reviewing the things you have already learned.

Overall a great read and one of the top book on the subject of NLP.

                  Product Description

This is not just an introductory book to Neuro-Linguisitic Programming (NLP). This is your introductory guide to a new world of experiences. The Technology of Change gives you, in a simple yet precise way, the essence of what constitutes the 'theory' of NLP followed by applications designed to fine-tune your senses and make you ready to apply what you have learned. Moreover, a wide section of the book offers transcribed actual applications to help you put your new skills to immediate use.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has revealed secrets, which unlock the human potential for excellence. It has evolved in a powerful technology of change, allowing people to permanently get rid of problems that block their way in life. Unwanted behaviors and irrational beliefs are now way into the past. With NLP you can transform your downsides to strengths and your frustrations to outcomes! With 'The Technology of Change' you can:

                  · Build stronger and sincere relationships with people.

                  · Communicate your ideas fully and accurately.

                  · Free yourself from fears, phobias, negative emotions and internal conflicts, that may have held you from achieving your goals.

                  · Find out what you really want in life...

                  · ...and really GET IT.

                  · Be at the peak of your potential whenever you need it

                  · And a lot more!

This book was also written in the Greek language. The Greek version of the book includes a glossary establishing the NLP terminology in Greek, based on the essence of each term. Thus, one avoids a stagnant translation of the English words, for which one might need further 'translation'.

5 out of 5 stars NLP: The New Technology Of Achievement.......2007-05-24

When we first encountered NLP more than a dozen years ago, we realized it represented a paradigm shift - a completely new way of thinking that makes heightened achievement levels and personal transformation possible.

Here's the great reality about NLP: If one person can do something, anyone else can learn how to do it! Now, human excellence can be systematically studied, then reproduced. Just as you can learn to ski, drive, or use a computer, so too can you learn and apply the core achievement skills: motivation, persuasion, confidence and self-esteem.

In these tapes, some of the nation's outstanding NLP trainers will share the same strategies they have taught thousandes of NLP Comprehensive seminar participants. You'll learn:

                              * How your motivation strategy works and how to use it at will
                              * How to eliminate past limitations and gain confidence in your future
                              * How to set your goals and future mission
                              * How to apply specific processes to gain deep self-appreciation and self esteem

Because NLP processes are universal, you can apply them to every area of your life. Our trainers will guide you in applying the processes so you can attain a lasting positive outlook and increase you peak performances.

Enjoy the path you have selected - the NLP path - to rewards of greater personal achievement. - Connirae and Steve Andreas
