Moon Handbooks Texas.......2007-01-18
We found this very useful on our trip, finding great spots to visit that we may not have otherwise found.
Excellent guidebook.......2003-05-15
I used this book extensively during the three years I lived in Texas. I liked its mix of history and practical where, when, and how information.
Organized regionally around the major cities, the Texas Handbook also includes numerous towns and sights of interest in the surrounding vicinity and places between. It does a remarkably good job of covering such a large state.
Hopefully a new addition is in the works. Because it was published in 1998, most prices will be out-of-date, but it's so easy to now get hours & admission via web sites, that it's not that big of a problem once you've used the handbook to identify all the interesting places you want to visit.

Not accurate .......2006-11-26
I used this book when backpacking on a trail in Mt. Cheaha State Park, and found it to be drastically lacking in accuracy. The time the author estimated it would take to hike the trail was vastly underestimated, and the dirt roads he said we would cross were not where they ought to be based on his description. I wondered if the author had even hiked the trail in the last four years. Given that my trouble interpreting the author's book appears to mirror that of other users, I think people should be very hesitant to rely on this book for serious backcountry hiking.
That said, the author does at least describe a lot of great trails in Alabama, and he explains how to get to the trailheads. If you want a book to explain where you could go hike, this will be useful. If you want a great guide to the trails themselves... Well, this book may leave you hiking for hours in the cold dark of night wondering why you are not yet at a destination the author claims should take only a fraction of that time to reach.
I feel that I should add that because this book is ambitious and the author appears sincere in his effort to describe the beauty of Alabama trails, I don't want to be too negative towards him. Nevertheless, I am still reluctant to rely on (or recommend) this book for specific details about backcountry trails. Finally, I suggest that were the author to add gps coordinates to his trail descriptions, then anyone using his book would be able to determine for certain whether any apparent inconsistency between the trial and the book was due to a miscalculation on their part or on the author's.
Extremely inaccurate and outdated.......2006-11-10
I work at Monte Sano State Park and when I compared the section about the "Plateau Loop Trail" (also known as the North Plateau Loop and South Plateau Loop) with our trail map (which is not, as is stated in the book, 50 cents, but $2.00 because it is a very detailed and excellent map) I saw numerous mistakes. Firstly, only a very fast and experienced hiker could do the entire trail in an hour. I can do the North Plateau Loop in 40 minutes, but that is at a fast pace, and it is only 1.2 miles, whereas the entire loop is about 4.8 miles. Also, hiking is not free at the park. There is an admission fee for all hikers, bikers and picnickers. One of the "ruins" the author describes is the site of a lodge built several years ago, which is used for meetings and events. Some of the landmarks and cross-trails he describes are not correct, and he doesn't even mention where the North Plateau Loop crosses the road that leads into the park! Someone unfamiliar with that trail would have difficulty picking it up on the other side of the road, as it is not easy to see. He also has the Bog Trail meet up with the South Plateau Loop twice before it meets with the Mountain Mist Trail, where it actually meets it the second time after the intersection of the Mountain Mist Trail. There are so many mistakes in this one trail description that I wonder how many other trail descriptions are in error. As far as Monte Sano State Park goes, we have twenty miles of hiking and/or biking trails, and your best bet would be to come to the park and purchase one of our trail maps, and if possible talk to one of the rangers, who are extremely knowledgable about the park trails. And a $2.00 accurate map is certainly better than an inaccurate $13.00 book.
Good Information, Questionable Details.......2006-08-21
Having now hiked several of the trails described in this book, my wife and I have found the book lacking in accurate details more than once. At points on several different trails as well as driving directions to trailheads we have had to make notes in the book to add or even correct information. While realizing that trails change and even back roads to trailheads change, at some points we found details to be completely different than reality (such as a the details of a cemetary in the Sipsey Wilderness that proved quite different than what was described in the book.) While the book does prove to be useful (we continue to use it) a real trail map and a detailed road map must be consulted especially for the more remote trails.

Book Description
"OK, Joe!" the American lieutenant calls out to his driver. He hops into his jeep and heads out through French countryside just liberated from the Nazis. With him is the narrator of this novel, Louis, a Frenchman engaged by the American Army as an interpreter. Louis serves a group of American officers charged with bringing GIs to account for crimes—including rape and murder—against French citizens. The friendly banter of the American soldiers and the beautiful Breton landscape stand in contrast to Louis's task and his growing awareness of the moral failings of the Americans sent to liberate France. For not only must Louis translate the accounts of horrific crimes, he comes to realize that the accused men are almost all African American.
Based on diaries that the author kept during his service as a translator for the U.S. Army in the aftermath of D-Day, OK, Joe follows Louis and the Americans as they negotiate with witnesses, investigate the crimes, and stage the courts-martial. Guilloux has an uncanny ear for the snappy speech of the GIs and a tenderness for the young, unworldly men with whom he spends his days, and, in evocative vignettes and dialogues, he sketches the complex intersection of hope and disillusionment that prevailed after the war. Although the American presence in France has been romanticized in countless books and movies, OK, Joe offers something exceedingly rare: a penetrating French perspective on post-D-Day GI culture, a chronicle of trenchant racism and lost ideals.
Customer Reviews:
How it felt.......2006-02-20
In this book, Louis Guilloux, a writer and member of the French resistance, gives us a great depiction
of the days during (and after) the liberation of France.
It narrates the story of Louis, a member of the French resistance, that becomes for a few weeks a translator for the U.S military.
At the center of the story are the trials against african-american soldiers and the shock of observing how unaware the white american officers were of the racism in the U.S military.
Guilloux pen is a generous one. He witholds easy judgements, but is not shy in expressing his own views. Overall this little novel is a great read.

Funny..........2006-04-02
Any calendar that says it is Christmas on April 1st instead of April Fool's Day is a win in my book. Check it out, this calendar is quite humorous...
Funny as expected.......2006-02-26
We collect this calendar every year and this year was as good as always.
Too much clutter in the date boxes.......2006-02-09
Cute calendar, we love the Simpsons, but every day's box is cluttered with type telling of just about every event that exists around the world. White Shirt Day? Crab Race Day? Who the heck needs to know about that??? I prefer a 'clean' calendar where I can write my own events without all the 'clutter' making the calendar look sloppy.
I'll avoid this one in the future.
Great calendar.......2006-01-12
I buy The Simpsons calendar every year because it has everything. Every celeb birthday is recorded and so is EVERY holiday. I love the pictures of The Simpsons, but I have one complain, in December there is no Christmas picture. I always wonder why, oh well.
Great calendar for The Simpsons fan. Highly recommend!!

Every kind of fun!.......2005-10-02
I LOVE The Simpsons calendars, and was a huge fan of Groening's Life In Hell calendars. These calendars have EVERY Jewish holiday, nearly all Islamic holidays, and even holidays from other nations (White Dog Day, a day in the Iriquoi Indian nation, Eel Festival, Denmark, and so on). Excellent notations on the phases of the moon, as well as solstices, equinoces, and lunar and solar eclipses. But best of all, are the famous birthdays. I NEED to know when Jimi Hendrix's birthday is. I NEED to know that on this day, in 1890, Groucho Marx made his entry into the world. It's important. After having experienced the Simpsons and Life in Hell calendars, all others pale in comparison. The ONLY way it could be made better is with stickers. I also have Hello Kitty calendars, for my kids, because they have stickers like "school picture day" and "dentist!" and so on. My kids love all calendars, and they carry these two giant wall calendars around with them, just looking at the pretty pictures and counting the numbers. The Simpsons calendar artwork is great. The cartoons are little still life drawings of living in Springfield, and you see details in here that you're not going to catch on the show. I love it, wait every year for it to come out, and if I could get to the plant, I'd be waiting for one to come off, actually hot off the presses.
Book Description
Does the Bush Administration sound any better in rhyme? In this biting array of verse, it at least sounds funnier. Calvin Trillin employs everything from a Gilbert and Sullivan style, for describing George Bush’s rescue in the South Carolina primary by the Christian Right (“I am, when all is said and done, a Robertson Republican”), to a bilingual approach, when commenting on the President’s casual acknowledgment, after months of trying to persuade the nation otherwise, that there was never any evidence of Iraqi involvement in 9/11: “The Web may say, or maybe Lexis-Nexis / If chutzpa is a word they use in Texas.”
Trillin deals not only with George W. Bush but with the people around him—Supreme Commander Karl Rove and Condoleezza (Mushroom Cloud) Rice and Nanny Dick Cheney (“One mystery I’ve tried to disentangle: / Why Cheney’s head is always at an angle . . .”) The armchair warriors Trillin refers to as the Sissy Hawk Brigade are celebrated in such poems as “Richard Perle: Whose Fault Is He?” and “A Sissy Hawk Cheer” (“All-out war is still our druthers— / Fiercely fought, and fought by others.”).
Trillin may never be poet laureate—certainly not while George W. Bush is in office—but his wit and his political insight produce what has been called “doggerel for the ages.”
Customer Reviews:
more obliviously by the minute.......2007-01-07
Trillin is spot on with his poetic mockery of El Presidente Busho. It just gets worse. Can another book be far off? I laughed. Now, I'm weeping. This guy is one bad President. The Democrats took over Congress with an anti-war voter surge and Shrub wants to send in more troops? Sad. Our soldiers are dying and this guy wants to send more?! He is so OBLIVIOUS to reality.
THE SOCIETY IN RHYME.......2006-11-04
CALVIN TRILLIN DESCRIBES, WITH SUPER WORD CHOICES, OUR PRESENT LIVING STATUS PER SE.
Pithily Wittily Political Poetry.......2006-08-31
It's August '06 and Tony Snow, White House Press Secretary, reveals that President Bush has just read Albert Camus' "The Stranger," cover to cover. Some of us might have been very surprised to hear this. But not readers of Calvin Trillin. Before George W.Bush("W") was first elected President, Trillin offered our towel-snapping frat guy President of the United States (that is, POTUS) the campaign slogan "Definitely not the Dumbest Guy in the Deke/Delta Kappa Epsilon/ House."
"Obliviously On He Sails" was evidently not written for Bush believers. It's an indictment in verse, and occasional prose of "old cowhand" W,"toughest ombre ever hid in the Guard."
From 1999 to 2004, the funny lines keep coming, gathered in chapters like "Just invade Something" and "The Charge of the Sissy Hawk Brigades (tanks and guns-- all manned, of course, by other people's sons."
Trillin's points are often made in short essays that precede the poems. But both are lethally to the point, pithily witty. and not likely to please Bush loyalists. But we knew that, didn't we?
I really WANTED to love this book, but..........2005-05-16
...my mom just didn't enjoy it, so she gave it to me. After reading it, I can understand my mom's disappointment with this book, but I still found pieces to love. However, I know that my expectations had been much lower (after hearing her review) so I'm sure that helped too. The poems set to songs were DEFINITELY my favorite. (However, I didn't always know the tune, which sort of made those poems a bust, ya know?) A note: the Sea Shanties all work well to the opening theme from Gilligan's Island, and I knew most of the musical-related songs.
Also, Trillin's prose introductions to each section were great...in many times better than the poems within. The section in which he takes the blame for John Ashcroft was particularly amusing.
But, several of the poems left me feeling very "eh" about the whole thing. Ah well. There are some pure gem moments, but a lot that just didn't work for me.
Not Much Rhyme or Reason........2005-04-07
When I saw this book at the library, I thought it would be about poetry, as the author is called 'The Nation's' "deadline poet." Well, I know a deadline editor of a weekly tabloid and was expecting something intellectual to be inside this little book.
Needless to say, the stuff he had a good time making up is far from poetry as I know it. At least, he could have used some of Poe's lamentations. He lampoons both Bush administrations, other politicians, and enemies of our country, but trying to understand what his point is has me baffled.
There's not a single one I could use as an example. I do think the caricature on the front cover is kinda cute with the president as a captain at the wheel, but who on earth is that old fellow in uniform looking over his shoulder?
Mr. Trillin has twenty-two previously published items listed. I hope they are not poetry. He reminds me of the irreverent guy on PBS who played the piano (Mark Russell, I think his name is) who lampoons the politicians every election -- but he does it in fun and has a good time being proud of himself and his rhymes. This little tome has a ways to go to even be funny as he attacks from the rear.

Incomparable Analysis of Hendrix's Influence on Music and Society .......2005-08-04
This is not your typical chronological biography of an influential figure. In this outstanding piece of literary work, Charles Murray delves far beyond the superficial facts into far more profound terrritory. The author sets the standard by which all books dealing with the subject matter of Hendrix and era surrounding his meteorical ascension to the pinnacle of the fledging American rock culture should be judged. Thoroughly researched, the book is annotated with richly descriptive language that sheds new light on the role the cultural, social and political dynamics played in shaping Hendrix's life and the opposing impact he had on these dynamics. Paraphrasing an observation made by a prior reviewer, Murray transcends the almost inexplicable emotion evoked by Hendrix's art into eloquent, thought provoking prose. I found myself rereading many of the passages because I was so struck by the author's incisive and beautifully written statements.
The chapter's are as follows (possibly out of order and an omission or two as I recently lent my copy to a friend):
Chapter 1: The 60's, or the "We Decade". Murray delves into factors that engender the policitical, social, and musical climate of the late 60's within Britain and the United States. He astutely examines the contradictions, successes, failures, and outcomes from one of the most compelling eras of the last century. Hendrix's role as an iconic figure is also discussed in detail. The themes established here reemerge at various stages throughout the remaining chapters of the book.
Chapter 2: The Facts about Hendrix. The author reviews all the pubically known facts in a very straight forward fashion.
Chapter 3: Hendrix and women. Murray explores the background of women as the subject matter in rock and blues music and Jimi's volatile relationship with the female form. He analyzes how the influence of Jimi's "muse" manifested herself in various forms within his lyrics.
Chapter 4: Hendrix's role as a racial figure. Murray closely investigates all the elements encompassing the paradox of Jimi's cultural status: A black man playing to a white audience playing music popularized by whites rooted in the black musical tradition of blues.
Chapter 5: A critical comparison of his career with Robert Johnson's and Charlie Christian's; two fellow African American guitarists who similarily rose quickly to prominence, gained legendary status, and left a profound impact on Western Musical tradition.
Chapter 6: Hendrix and the Blues. An inciteful history (although brief by comparison since their are entire books on the subject) of the blues within the context of American and British culture as well as an exploration into how the african american muscial form influenced Hendrix and his place in history as one of its most important purveyor of the blues.
Chapter 7: Hendrix and Soul music. Describes the birth and growth of soul music, its influence on Henrdrix, and his corresponding influence upon the genre.
Chapter 8: Hendrix and Jazz music. Similiar to the previous chapter in its framework, it also explores what Hendrix might have done had been granted an opportunity to fulfill his musical potential and desires. Murray also establishes Hendrix as a seminal influence to the fusion movement.
Chapter 9: Categorizing Hendrix. A short but necessary acknowledgement using Hendrix as the definitive example of how it is impossible to categorize music without performing somewhat of a disservice to the artist.
Each chapter is carefully interwoven with quotes from Hendrix's comtemporary musicians, modern day artists (at the time of publication), other seminal literary works on music, as well as Hendrix's own lyrics and interview quotes. They provide an effective framework to buttress Murray's analysis and to serve as a transitional device between tangential arguements.
The size and depth of Murray's bibliography is as impressive as writing. It is another example of the level of scholarship at which he operates at. Also included is an exhaustive list of albums by other artists seperated by genre that either had an influence on Hendrix or were influenced by Hendrix.
Echoeing Robert Palmer's comments on the book jacket, "The artistry of this book is equal to that of its subject matter". If you want a traditional biography, this might not be exactly what you are searching for. However, if you seek to go beneath the surface of the iconoclastic Hendrix, his music, and the times he lived in, there is no better source. A truly illuminating experience and arguably the greatest book on rock'n'roll ever written.
Superb Analysis.......2004-05-03
Although most fans will be content with the 'Electric Gypsy' bio (which is equally good), "Crosstown Traffic" is more than a mere biography, and as such, invaluable for all Jimi fanatics.
The book is 1/4 bio, 1/4 Jimi's influences (as well as those subsequently influenced by him), 1/4 comparisons between peers and other black artists, and 1/4 conjecture based on his final days.
They've included a list of bootlegs (obviously out of date, but still pretty comprehensive) as well as all legitimate Hendrix material, and a guide to Jimiphiles on what artists to check out that might catch their interest.
An Excellent Book.......2003-03-01
This is my favorite book about not only Jimi Hendrix, but Robert Johnson and Charlie Christian too. Occasionally Charles Shaar Murray gets a little carried away during his wordy descriptions, but it doesn't matter. If you want to learn about the evolution of African American guitarists, this is the place to start.
Life R&R and the whole damn thing.......2000-06-13
Perhaps the best book written on rock music.
The Most Insightful On Jimi Thus Far.......2000-04-28
Unlike the usual gossip-laden rock bios (which I sometimes relish too, I'll admit), Murray's book is a serious piece of work. I've yet to come across a rock author as capable as Murray in analyzing the most important aspect of our Jimi-worship-- the MUSIC. Murray's book delves into the sociocultural groundwork of Jimi's musical style, and makes very astute leaps in connecting Jimi's music to various influences. Murray is perhaps the most intelligent rock biographer I've ever read (and I've read most of the major ones). At certain times, it's as though Murray's descriptive skill nearly matches his subject's musical genius. In any event, this book certainly does Jimi justice. Murray's descriptions of some of Jimi's well-known material are awesome. He describes an instance of Jimi's tight playing as (sorry if I slightly misquote) a "propulsive ball of rhythm, densely packed with ideas," and so forth. Murray is singularly able to verbally express what we deeply feel about Jimi's music, but have a hard time explaining to others. You know how tough it is to convince non-believers why you KNOW that Jimi is a genius, when they think that he was merely a hyped-up, noisy, wildman-clown, right? Well, read Charles Murray's book. I think it'll sooth your soul, and you'll come away with a deeper knowledge and appreciation of his subject. Hats off to Murray!
Book Description
This book will bring about a remarkable change in your play and most likely your winnings. Thousands of gamblers agree that this is the most important book ever published on the lucrative game of casino Blackjack. Over 100,000 copies sold.
Customer Reviews:
Good book on the history of card counting.......2005-07-19
Million Dollar Blackjack is a great book, but not for the reasons you might think! Written decades ago many other blackjack books have since been written with stronger, easier to apply, and simply more effective card counting systems. So if you're looking for "the system" look elsewhere!
With that said, what MDB will do for you is introduce you to the fascinating history of card counting. Many people unfamiliar with card counting imagine it to be a solitary practice where a single player attemts to "take on" the casino. Ken (and others) viewed card counting as a business and developed a number of innovative (at the time) systems for team play to maximize profit, while minimizing financial risk! Some of the techniques they came up with (and revealed in MDB) are nothing short of genius!
The Verdict:
If you're trying to learn how to count cards or just become a better blackjack player there are newer books out there better suited for this purpose...But once you've read a couple of those books come back to MDB for a great read on how card counting evolved!
a blackjack book that covers more than the basics.......2004-04-15
ive read quite a few books on the subject, most just repeat the basic strategy without telling you anything else. ken goes a step further here with flashcards to aid you in learning the basics. theres also a wide coverage for a few different counting strategies (without you having to pay extra for them) for different levels of your skill as well as fun little anecdotes about his heydey in team playing. its worth it alone just for the historical tidbits
One of the best books ever written on blackjack........2003-10-18
This book is truly one of the best books ever writtn by a professional blackjack player in history! I will also recommend, Gregorian Strategy for multiple deck blackjack.
good read.......2003-07-01
this book was entertaining, cool storys of kens adventures.
the info on blackjack is a little out dated. (but there will always be 52 cards in a deck, so counting systems should still be useful in todays games.) even though casino rules have changed, it is very possible to change basic strategy to suite the game. then choose a count system to advance your self to a better player.
Million Dollar Blackjack.......2002-11-20
Book came highly recommended by a friend and has exceeded my expectations. Easy reading material. The book arrived the same week it was ordered. I would recommend purchasing used book(s) to friends and associates from Amazon.com. Thank you for the five star experience.

Lucky enough to own it!.......2003-12-04
I consider myself lucky to have a hardcover copy of this book. It reads like fiction while still providing quite a bit of insight into the world of a professional blackjack team. While casino conditions have changed, most of the presented information is still valuable for any serious blackjack player.
Great adventure of a team of players out to beat the casino!.......2002-11-18
Back in the late 70's and early 80's, Ken Uston was the king of blackjack. The Big Player is a story of his adventures where he gets recruited into a team of card counters to play and win blackjack against the casinos. This book does not present any card counting systems. It is a book about the stories he had after going up against the casinos.
He had a wild ride and discusses the never ending battle between his teams and the casinos. How they'd get barred, different tactics and strategies they used, team play, etc.
If you are interested in card counting of blackjack, you'll love this story.

Customer Reviews:
Great instructive book.......2007-07-30
This book is exactly what I was looking for. I was interested in getting started in buying and selling real estate options and this book gets to the heart of it. There are a multitude of great suggestions, tips, and instruction. I would be lost without it. There are even sample forms. Worth twice the price!!
Unique but Highly Profitable Real Estate Investment Strategy.......2007-07-26
Real estate options are a very little used tool in the business, possibly because many people confuse them with land contracts. RE Options are nothing like land contracts, in a land contract you are obligated to buy. In an option you have the option of purchasing at a preset price. A number of examples are given and this is a well written book for people who have never attempted this. I recommend this book to all RE investors and Realtors.
Bad writing style.......2007-05-13
Like Lucier's other book on finding preforeclosure properties, this book on real estate options, while full of useful information, is so hard to read because of the terrible writing style that it is hard to recommend very strongly. His uneducated writing style causes me to wonder if he really knows what he is talking about. Prepare to be educated by torture if you choose to read this book.
Another real estate tool for the box.......2007-03-26
Great for a rookie to get lot of updated real estate information, but this book is probably geared toward an investor with a little more experience or a rookie investor that is well schooled. What was the best information in this book? - How to structure and execute real estate options. Also good a strategy, which involves locating distressed property, controlling that property with an option, and then finding a buyer who would probably not have considered that property until you were able to show him the potential in that property. Another real estate tool for the box.
The ideas sound great, but lack online support.......2007-01-23
I read most of this book and the ideas sound great, but after checking the author's web site I found the support limited. He offers his own personal support for a fee, but there is no way to contact anyone other than himself. Like every other how-to book on real estate you have to ask a question. Does anyone besides the author use this method? If so, how do I contact these individuals?
Until I come across a book like this, I find it hard to believe the author's information.
