Book Description
Through the vibrant watercolors and simple but highly evocative sketches of Fu Ji Tsang, discover an authentic China expressed with emotion and sensitivity. In My Chinese Sketchbook, East meets West as the artist depicts typical scenes from his native country in the original Impressionist-inspired style that has made him famous: from the bustling streets of the cities to the tranquility of the mountains, and from the majestic landscapes to the spiritual temples.
Leading the reader on a semi-autobiographical journey through this mystical country, the artist takes us from Beijing, over Huangshan, the yellow mountain famous for inspiring many a painter or poet, across the canals of Zhouzhuang, China's first village on water, to Taishan, the most sacred of the Taoist mountains.
Capturing the soul of every object depicted, true to the Taoist philosophy, the artist shows his love for nature in his depiction of China's flora and fauna. This sketchbook explores not only the magnificent landscapes, but also the people and their culture, with chapters devoted to Chinese music, dance, and costumes and a section on calligraphy, an art form in itself.
For art lovers and those enthralled by this magical country, it remains simply to follow the artist's brushstrokes and let yourself be seduced by his images!

An Explosion of Color throughout China.......2006-11-26
For those who love waterCOLOR, I recommend Fu Ji Tsang's "My Chinese Sketchbook". A veritable explosion of vivid oranges, reds, purples, and blues highlighted with virtually every color accent the eye could see--or imagine. Tsang's sense of balance working with grades of light, shade, and space are a testament to his ability to translate what he sees onto the paper.
This work highlights his depictions of the diverse people and places of China, from Fujian to the Tibetan and Muslim regions. Tsang shows himself able to depict a tribesman's face with painstaking detail (p. 124-125), or an ornate garden and dwelling in what appear to have been just a few misty strokes ("The Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou", p.47). It looks to have been an easy feat...but the balance and cohesiveness of each work speak of Tsang's experitise--there is no simplicity in the artist's eye. A real treat!
My Chinese Sketchbook.......2005-07-29
This is a beautiful book and will be greatly enjoyed by my sister who is an artist and recently took a wonderful trip to China
Book Description
Capturing the likeness of animals on paper is a rewarding challenge for any artist. Domesticated cats, our most familiar furry friends, bring forth a unique blend of trials for artists trying to replicate their features accurately. The incredible range of breeds, colors, sizes and shapes is further enhanced by the never-ending poses each can assume, from sitting and sleeping to working and fighting. Each cat is, at best, an individual, and bringing forth those special aspects of each animal's character will make any artist's drawings come to life. Artist Melvyn Petterson offers advice for capturing the essence of these animals, both young and old, pedigreed and mixed, along with tips for portraying their features accurately, drawing fur in different media, and mastering a range of poses. * A practical guide to capturing one's cat on paper, with easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions * Covers all aspects of drawing cats in different media, including charcoal, graphite pencil, watercolor pencils and oil pastels * Illustrated with an inspiring collection of cat drawings that will appeal to artists and animal lovers

absolutely delightful !!.......2004-01-15
This gem of a little book (very pleasant format you can easily carry around with you) really took the mystery out of drawing cats for me. The exemplary sketches are simple enough to show you how to get to the basics shapes of the cat without getting bogged down by details, which is always tricky especially for beginners.
The sections run as follow:
1.- basic shapes (a little about anatomy without getting too tangled up in this aspect) including a few races and how their body shapes and sizes vary
2.- aspects of the cat (heads, eyes, noses, mouths, whiskers, ears, putting it all together as the whole head; feet & paws, tails, body postures and relation between tail and body) still keeping in mind the races, full-haired or slim cats, etc.
3.- fur and markings (tortoiseshell, white, black, tabby, drawing shadows, highlights for both short and long hair, layers, directioinal marks, kittens, adults, male, female, working with negative space, unusual cats
4.- cat poses (typical attitudes, sleeping, rounded up, sideways, alert, sitting, facing 2 ways, head turned almost 180 degrees, stretching, scratching, washing, eating, playing, walking, running, stalking, jumping, and finally cats togehter)
As a cat lover and owner of two, I can't get enough of experimenting using the clear and concise advice given here. Of course, you do have to have handled a pencil before, but not to such extend as being an expert. I'm certainly no more than a medium amateur and I did well, even if I say so myself.
Enjoy !!
Aspects of Cats.......2004-01-13
I have just ordered a small cat manikin to go along with this book from Dick Blick for sketching different poses. Chapter Two Aspects of Cats is very helpful. The chapter breaks down all the features of the cat and gives detailed examples and steps as to how the face proportions should come together.
Most Comprehensive Cat Drawing Book.......2002-09-15
If you are a serious cat artist with training in realism, then this is a good book for you. The demonstrations presuppose prior drawing knowledge. It is the most grown-up and comprehensive cat drawing book I have ever seen. I've checked out nearly every cat drawing book still in print from my library system (including the step-by-step "Draw 50" type) and find most of them juvenile or too beginner.
I understand the negative reviews completely. Those who are self-taught or just starting out may find this book intimidating and opaque. I recommend starting with either a more general book on just drawing (Betty Edward's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain) or a more concrete book that focuses on step-by-step drawing of specific cats (like the Draw 50 series)
If you are disappointed in this book, give it a chance. Dust it off in a few years after you have had more practice drawing and observing cats and you'll be surprised how much more helpful it is. If you are just starting out drawing and don't understand all the information, copy the drawings. Copying another person's drawings is a great way to learn how to draw. Especially a fidgety subject like cats. You'll soon be creating your own drawings from the knowledge you gained.
I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about cats. A more experienced artist will appreciate the demos, and anyone who loves cats will appreciate the drawings.
meow mix.......2002-08-14
I was very disappointed with this book. it is full of great sketches but not any applicable drawing instruction. I was hoping for not only examples but "how to" guidance and this book doesn't offer it. The title of the book is very misleading, its really about looking at all the poses and features that cats share not about drawing them. Will seek out another author who teaches how to draw cats...
Explains How to Draw Cats by Observing Them.......2002-07-18
The format of this book is so handy -- small & spiral bound so it remains open while working. I would have preferred the text to be larger, but then maybe I just need glasses.
The author has done a great job of mixing interesting cat facts and fun along with detailed instructions about how to draw cats. Confusing things like proportion and distance of the eyes to nose, different shapes of heads and ears, are given new meaning that makes illustrating cats much easier.
These are not static "draw what you see in this book" type of lessons. This author encourages you to look at your own cat while he sits, sleeps or does any of those cute cat things right in front of you, and draw with confidence.

Superman.......2007-03-25
It got lost in the mail and I didnt get it for a week and 4 days
Another winner by Byrne!.......2007-01-10
John Byrne does the best Superman ever!
In the mid-eighties, DC asked John Byrne, who had written a long run of The Fantastic Four, to revamp Superman, who was about fifty years old at the time. In what I would consider typical "Marvel style," Byrne added characterization and scientific explanation to the Superman mythos as he reinvented classic characters and retold their stories. His beautiful art work and excellent story-telling ability make these comics a JOY to read!
I would STRONGLY recommend that you purchase all FOUR volumes of John Byrne's Superman; each one picks up right where the last one left off. When I was finished reading them, I purchased the rest of Byrne's run on the Superman comics; they were that good.
I bought this book for Byrne's art, not Ordway's..........2004-06-16
I'd heard a lot about this new interpretation of Superman from John Byrne. As a Byrne fan, it seemed a logical choice to add to my little mini-collection of trade paperbacks, many of which feature his art. I'd read through Volume 1 of Superman: Man of Steel and found it to be a refreshing take on the old Superman character. Byrne's art in Volume 1, however, was not what I was used to from his previous work.
That appears to have changed in Volume 2, as Byrne cleans up Superman nicely. The stories are simple, reflective of Superman's early days. I love what Byrne does with Lex Luthor, making him an untouchable evil industrialist with an aura similar to that of Frank Miller's Kingpin. An interesting spin.
The thing that wasn't great about Volume 2, though, was that Byrne stops doing the art for a few issues here and there during the story of Darkseid and the New Gods. The idea of Byrne penciling a Darkseid story was very compelling, but Jerry Ordway does most of the art on this story. Ordway is no John Byrne, and the difference is huge. As Byrne was a major reason that I purchased this volume in the first place, I was disappointed and am now uncertain about whether or not to buy Volume 3 (when it comes out). If you're a fan of John Byrne's work, be warned.
Great Start For The Post-Crisis Superman Titles!.......2004-05-30
What you need to know before reading this book:
1) Superman stories published from 1938 to 1986 (commonly called "Pre-Crisis Superman") were wiped out of continuity and is no longer part of the Superman Canon.
2) An event called "Crisis on Infinite Earths" cleaned up DC Comics continuity and recreated the DC Universe in 1985/6. All comics from that point to the present are referred to as the "Post-Crisis" stories.
3) The "Post-Crisis" Superman began with 1986's "The Man of Steel" miniseries by John Byrne (collected as Volume One)
4) This volume (Vol. 2) collects the first three issues of the normal Superman comics immediately following "The Man of Steel" miniseries - therefore giving us a good representation of the "New" Superman and how it all began (again).
The majority of the stories collected in this volume are written and drawn by John Byrne, who was also responsible for the revamp in the first place. The rest of the stories are written by Marv Wolfman (who also provided the "Intro" to this volume) and beautifully drawn by Jerry Ordway. The stories read like a continuation of "The Man of Steel". While the previous volume gave us the new Krypton, the new Pa/Ma Kent, Brainiac, Luthor, etc., this volume gives us Cat Grant, the new Metallo, Prof. Emil Hamilton and further fleshes out the malicious character of Lex Luthor. In addition to that, we have three issues of Superman in Apokolips (actually part of the "Legends" crossover but it can very well stand alone by itself) with a superb rendition of Darkseid, Orion, Lightray and the rest of the classic Kirby creations by John Byrne.
This volume is highly recommended to all Superman historians (like me!) and all fans of John Byrne (the man was at his very best here).

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but not all light-hearted fun, you have to skip the tiresome parts!.......2007-09-03
I liked parts of this book and disliked others, overall I'm glad I read it, but I didn't find it as funny as other reviews indicated. Its fascinating to hear about Mole's experiences whilst renovating a greek home, I loved his interactions with the villagers and there are some really funny stories. I did not like how Mole tends to go on about Greek Mythology and History. This book is marketed as a funny life experience and that was what I wanted to read. I did not want to be lectured at the same time and found that I skipped many pages because of that. I loved reading about his experiences, not the lectures on Ancient Greece, thanks, already been there and done that, if you know what I mean!
Been There, Done It!.......2007-05-17
As someone who has renovated an old property in Greece, I can recommend this hillarious and quite genuine account of the process. It also emphasises the support and hospitality one gets from the Greeks.
Wasted my money.......2006-06-27
Just about every page bulges with the "to be" verb, making the reading dull and monotonous. Sentences are unnecessarily packed with useless wording when simpler constructions would be far more clear. I can't imagine this book was edited by a professional. Simple grammar is incorrect in places. I got as far as the fourth chapter and gave the book away.
Amusing, absorbing, and just plain funny.......2006-06-24
If you enjoyed Memoirs of an American Housewife in Japan, and A Year In Provence, you won't be disappointed with It's All Greek to Me! You'll love it. All three books have the same ingredient, which makes them so enjoyable: humor. The sub-title: A Tale of a Mad Dog and an Englishman, Ruins, Retsina - and Real Greeks, tells it all. As an Englishman, John Mole truly captures the psyche of these seemingly simple Greek people. Mr. Mole's writing is concise and a pleasure to read.
Excellent writing, a fine eye for detail, and very witty!.......2005-11-03
Mole is an excellent writer with a fine eye for detail and a very nice sense of humor. His observations capture the essence of Greek village culture with very funny descriptions of the locals, and particularly their conversations. He keys in on the rampant individuality of the Greeks in a warm-hearted way. He is really good at writing dialogue, athough with the normal problem of trying to convey Greeks speaking broken English and Anglos speaking very broken Greek. But he does manage to pull it off! A light-hearted, funny journey through Greek village life!

Documentary: A History of the Non-Fiction Film

Book Description
Political documentaries are more popular now than ever. Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), the top-grossing documentary film of all time, is one of many such recent films. In this incisive book, James McEnteer parses the politics of nonfiction films of recent decades, which together constitute an alternative history to many official stories offered by the government and its media minions. Tracing the origins of an oppositional documentary movement to the Vietnam era, McEnteer shows how a strong independent documentary tradition grew from television's failure to sustain a commitment to the public interest. McEnteer evaluates the work of four artists in depth--the intrepid Barbara Kopple; the puckish but deadly Michael Moore; Errol Morris, a connoisseur of human quirkiness; and anti-Bush crusader Robert Greenwald--and that of other courageous filmmakers, including Barbara Trent (The Panama Deception and Cover-Up: Behind the Iran-Contra Affair). McEnteer looks at the pioneering public affairs documentaries of Edward R. Murrow and Fred Friendly. Their 1950s CBS program, See It Now, won many awards but angered network owners who did not wish to alienate mass TV audiences with controversy. With Murrow's firing, the retreat of television from engaging civic issues in serious ways began in earnest. McEnteer devotes an entire chapter to the many 2004 documentaries made by both sides in that hotly contested presidential election. He concludes with a look at populist antiwar and antiglobalization films of Big Noise and the Guerrilla News Network, whose youthful producers push the boundaries of the documentary form. As mass media fail--now more than ever--to fulfill their watchdog role over public officials and policies, the importance of documentaries committed to telling the truth increases. Such films bear witness to important events otherwise hidden from our view. Their makers dare to refute the falsehoods passing for conventional wisdom, sometimes risking their lives or reputations to reveal the nature of those lies and the interests behind them. As Shooting the Truth clearly shows, documentaries have become an essential component for making sense of our time. This book enlarges our appreciation of contemporary nonfiction films and invites debate on the many issues it raises.

The politics underlying documentaries of recent decades.......2006-04-20
Political documentaries are popular now as never before yet behind this popularity has been a wealth of effort to bring them to public attention: an effort documented in SHOOTING THE TRUTH: THE RISE OF AMERICAN POLITICAL DOCUMENTARIES. Author James McEnteer analyzes the politics of a range of documentaries of recent decades, providing chapters which evaluate four artists in depth and use their approaches and works as a foundation for revealing political documentary contents, approaches and growing popularity. While the analysis is particular to these artists as far as selected films used as examples, its implications hold many insights on the documentary film as a whole. College-level audiences of film studies in particular will want to read this.

You Can Do Better..........2007-06-01
I bought this book along with another book for baby shower decoration ideas. Boy, was I disappointed. The book is boring and the ideas are not at all original. Do yourself a favor, and skip this one.
Now, if you want a really good book with great ideas, try "Themed Baby Showers: Mother Goose to Noah's Ark" by Becky Long. It's an excellent book with excellent, original ideas.
There's more than just the traditional Baby Shower..........2002-07-30
...I'm a busy Hostess, always planning Baby Showers - and always looking for new and fun ideas. Diane Warner has a wonderful collection of themes with ideas on how to carry the theme through the invitations to the decorations and food. She inspires readers to think beyond the traditional Baby Shower with great ideas and useful tips for a fun approach to Baby Showers. You'll have as much fun hosting the Baby Shower as your guests will have enjoying it!
Spend the [money] on mom-to-be, not on this book!.......2002-06-13
This book has a few useful suggestions for shower themes, but is otherwise useless. The games are all pretty stupid and sound boring. I'd be embarassed to ask my guests to play them. Even many of themes are pretty bad (although there are a few good suggestions). As an example, Warner suggests a theme where you ask all the guests (including the men) to come pretending they are pregnant (i.e. with pillows stuffed under their shirts). If I were the mom-to-be, I'd probably turn right around and leave the party when I saw that. Late pregnancy is unpleasant enough without being made fun of for it. The recipes section is even worse. Most of the foods sound remarkably unappealing. To top it off, the beverages section is packed with recipes for alcoholic drinks. Maybe it's me, but I can't imagine anything dumber than making a champagne punch the centerpiece of your buffet...remember, mom-to-be (the guest of honor) can't drink! Especially if she would otherwise it, it seems terribly thoughtless and inconsiderate to serve alcohol. The only value I derived from this book is some very clear ideas about what not to do. It happens, that all of the things I learned not to do were a) things the book suggested doing, and b) things it would never have occurred to me to do anyway. Take the [money] you were going to spend on this book and buy something for the baby.
A fun book packed with great ideas!!.......2002-04-19
This is a great book on Baby Showers..the best I have seen! It is so so well written with easy to understand ideas for really cute, unique baby showers!! Diane Warner's sense of humor also shines through, making this a pleasure to read. I gave a baby shower for my best friend, using a combination of ideas gathered from this book, and everyone raved! I highly recommend this book to others who want to give a really fun, great baby shower for someone!!

Book Description
Widely considered the best NFL quarterback of all time, Joe Montana personifies performance excellence and personal integrity both on and off the field. Yet the word most closely associated with him is not “winner”–it’s “leader.” Since his retirement a decade ago, he has become a popular motivational speaker sought out by corporations nationwide, speaking to capacity audiences as large as twenty thousand.
Now making his message available to a broader audience, Montana teams up with performance coach Tom Mitchell to extend to all areas of life the truths of success on the field. The Winning Spirit shows that ultimately performance excellence is fueled by personal integrity. This is the key to winning the inner game, which is about accountability and attitude, as well as desire, enthusiasm, effort, and appreciation. For example:
• Know What You Want: First, identify goals, then turn clarity into action.
• Strive for Excellence: Surpass expectations and reach new heights
• Fail Fast and Move On: Take chances, learn from mistakes, and keep pressing forward–don’t let fear or regret take you out of the game.
• Remember the “I” in Team: Make yourself the priority–because intense preparation is the individual responsibility of each member of the team.
• Welcome Pressure: Want to be the best? Work with or compete against the best!
• Walk Like a Champ: Your life is not just about achieving success, but also about having a purpose and creating significance.
With great stories and practical strategies, Joe Montana and Tom Mitchell give us hard-won advice based on years of success. This timely and timeless message is nothing less than a contemporary motivational classic.

boring.......2007-05-07
I thought this was boring. It was recommended to me. Very fast read and because it was audio it was too slow for me. So, buy the word version so you can get thru it faster.
Wow!.......2007-03-08
I'm way to smart to take advice from Joe Montana and some guy I've never heard of who are just out to make a quick buck! I'm not going to buy it.
It's the only book available to listen that I am remotely interested in from the Chicago Public Library this week? OK...bring it on.
Wait? I forgot, I like Joe! Oh, right, he was one of the greatest of all time! This other bloke, he seems to know a thing or two.
I'm being motivated! By Joe Montana and the other guy! The seem to have some good advice. I'll listen again. Wow, the 16 principles all work, all inspire and the practice work is helpful! Yes, Joe and other guy, why don't business people practice? Why not?
A good book by what some say is the greatest of all time. Glad I found it.
Excellent.......2006-07-05
This book was excellent. Joe Montana will transform his winning spirit to you through these pages. It is a great book which will help you to use the winning strategies of a sports team in your own life. Anyone who desires to succeed will be encouraged by what is written on the pages in this book. I shared this book with a couple friends because I felt that some of the things written in it would bring inspiration into their lives. They both agreed that it was very good. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with one.
Well done........2006-05-16
I'm into self improvement and thought it'd be interesting to hear the perspective of an athlete on how one can perform better. I thought listening to this (unabridged) audio CD would be a productive way to spend my commute to work. And I was right.
This book demonstrates which principles one should employ to achieve goals, be a team player, and a leader -- all while maintaining good spirit. Every principle was backed by examples of real and successful people -- so there is no B.S. and I like that. It includes stories of legendaries such as John Wooden, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, etc. It even includes business world examples from Tom Mitchell's (the co-author) corporate coaching experiences and Joe's business experiences. It's definitely not about Joe.
I am not a football fan, and was definitely not expecting their talk to be so real. Their advice is dead on the money. It was silly that they picked 16 principles because that was the number on Joe's jersey -- but all 16 of them are actually practical/useful.
Another reviewer said this wasn't sliced bread -- but if you listen to them and actually put their principles into practice -- in business, relationships, sports et cetera --you will definitely come out on top.
Recommendation: Buy. If you're going to get advice, get it from the best.
Not a Big Sports Fan, but..........2006-04-19
I am not a big sports fan so I was skeptical this book would be cliche's like "Throw the ball and make the TD!". Instead I found a practical guide with interesting stories to back up practical ideas. Sure we have heard many of the ideas before, but to hear how they truly applied to someone's real life is very useful. And I much prefer books by people who "made it" over books by persons who became successful telling you how.
It is clear that Joe had a lot of initial talent but in his stories he talks about how he went from 3rd string QB at Notre Dame to parlay that talent to become a superstar athlete.
But no, the book is not about Joe Montana, he is merely the vehicle to convey the inspirational messages. It is not a vanity piece.
An example of how Joe and Tom's book can help you is their advice, "Fail Fast". I had the value "persistence" in many cases where I should have failed fast and moved on to more constructive endeavors. I had to learn the hard way. Had this value been ingrained in me I would have saved years of my life following the wrong paths. Hopefully their readers can learn many lessons from the book rather than the school of hard knocks.
He also covers the slogan "There is no 'I' in TEAM" and how you should really approach it.
This is definitely a book to help you shape your mindset for success. Not a timeless classic, but a good meat and potatoes guide.
