A Life-Transformative Book.......2000-11-19
This is one of my all-time favorite books. Reading it slowly, I learned to see the interplay of relationships in which no firm line is drawn between objects, and so to see beauty. I learned that wrapping my imaginative body around my experience is essential to loving and knowing reality. The author sees her struggle to paint symbolized in her key painting of a parrot, that part of us taught in schools to regurgitate, as it angrily fights to protect the treasure of imagination which lives within us.... She compares the eagle-eye view--wide and expansive-- with the narrow focused view emphasized in our schooling.
A Mislabeled Intent.......2000-05-24
On Not Being Able To Paint would perhaps be better title, Why One Should Paint. Trained as Freudian psychologist, Joanna Field all too painstakingly analyzes her rudimentary drawing and painting efforts in an attempt uncover what ultimately transpires in the process. An ancient quest for sure but depending upon one's knowledge in either the art, education or psychological fields, the road thus traveled is relatively interesting. As a professional artist, I found her all too subjective diatribes tiring, boring, even stretching the limits of believability in the sense that she was able to draw such cataclysmic conclusions from the bad visuals she produced. Her analytical training was obviously taking the upper hand as she "read" so much into own work. However, at the end of each segment, she manages to pull her rantings together for some thoughtful and genuine insights as to what took place throughout her process. Midway through, she departs from her dependence upon the sketches, begins to analyze in a broader, more universal context and salvages the book. She then rather clearly and poetically takes us through dreams, visions, both disillusion and illusion, realizing that, "the inner subjective and outer objective aspects of reality are in a continual state of change and development" and feels that a painter beautifully solves the problem of navigating these (constructed) worlds by inventing a "half-way house between the dream receiver and the external one". She then offers rather keen insight as to how the artist has to "pay" in communicability for this navigational privilege for with others able to share his/her dream, s/he is more "absolved from the guilt or defiance of common sense reality". Of course then, there is the psycho-analytic relation of visual symbols to our sexual development but here her training shines and I found myself thinking of parts of my visual practice in a new light. A colleague, well versed in the history of psychoanalytic development made the astute comment that considering the limited scope of the practice at the time, (she comments on just finishing a drawing at the precipice of WWI), the relationships she manifests are insightful and progressive. Her final strength is her exploration of how this new found knowledge should be boldly carried forth into the classrooms as it would all but revolutionize not only our thought process on the role of visual creation, but our perception of our reality as well. One is deeply saddened however as we realize how we have seemed to regressed rather than progressed in that area in our society's educational role. One absolutely maddening fact however, is the that this current edition omits the a crucial drawing to which she constantly refers on its cover; something the publisher should be taken to task for sure. She ends on a phenomenological note, finding it a pity that the word `reverie' is no longer a part of the language of psycho-pathology for painting, like analysis, provides a safe setting where one can be indulged in its grace and produce the same subsequent and ultimate effect for the person who looks at it. Great for an educator interested in the arts, probably a bit stale for the professional analysts of today and a bit too naive for those in the professional arts.

Book Description
Legendary publisher Bill Gaines is perhaps best remembered as the founder of
MAD Magazine, but in the opinion of many dedicated comic book fans, his greatest achievement was E.C. Comics, a line of adventure, horror, and science-fiction comics whose influence on American graphic novels is undeniable, even today.
Foul Play! is the perfect book for anyone wanting to understand the special place E.C. holds in the comic fan's heart -- or who just wants to read some real good comics!
Foul Play! celebrates the fan-favorite creators of E.C. Comics, profiling their artists -- a veritable who's who of mid-20th century popular illustration -- and describing how they came to work with Bill Gaines and how their careers evolved after E.C.. Among the comics art legends profiled are Al Feldstein; Harvey Kurtzman; Johnny Craig; Jack Davis; Graham Ingels; Jack Kamen; Wallace Wood; Joe Orlando; Will Elder; John Severin; George Evans; Al Williamson; Reed Crandall; Bernie Krigstein; and more! Plus, the book includes a special bonus: a lost E.C. Comics story "Wanted for Murder!" originally intended to be published in 1956 but forgotten and unseen until now.
When originally published, E.C. Comics titles like
Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and Weird Science became best-selling titles, embraced by readers for their macabre wit and stunning illustration. Eventually, E.C. Comics ran afoul of a full Senate Subcommittee investigating (but never proving!) the link between comic books and juvenile delinquency, but not before winning a legion of fans that still treasure E.C.'s output.
Foul Play! demonstrates -- in glorious, gory detail -- exactly why these are among the most beloved comics stories ever published.

a tope!.......2007-05-12
Great trip down memory lane!.......2006-08-31
Super book!! Brings back memories of buying those (great, dirty, violent, perverted, notorious---choose your adjective)comics.
I was and still am a fan of science-fiction and loved the art of Wally Wood in Weird Science and Weird Fantasy and their reincarnations. I never bought Superman, Batman, Archie, et al.
Everyday I mourn the fact that my mother tossed out the magazines when I was in the service. And reading these comics apparently never hurt me as I went on to garner four academic degrees.
So buy this book and relive the golden days of EC comic books.
Pull the covers over your head and read it by flashlight!.......2006-05-29
In the 1950s, while the other kids were ooohing-and-ahhhing over Superman and the Green Lantern, we few proto-geeks were absorbed in MAD Magazine and the equally lunatic E.C. monthlies, especially Tales from the Crypt, Creepy, Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, and the SuspenStories series. Nobody could keep your eyes glued silently to the page like Jack Davis, Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein, and their cohorts. Some of the stories were original, some were adaptations of authors we also doted on. (Ray Bradbury was a favorite source, and you'll find his classic story "Touch and Go!" here, which I clearly remember reading when it appear in 1953.) This lavish volume is partly a history of that genre and partly a collection of full-length, photoreproduced stories -- plus an original, "Wanted for Murder!," written by Johnny Craig for E.C.'s "picto-fiction" magazine, Crime Illustrated! (which was actual typeset text -- no balloons -- overlaid on the black-and-white artwork). This is a great book for fans of the days when they published real comic books!
Truly GHASTLY over-design. Hugely disappointed........2006-03-03
Hugely disappointed with the over-design of this book, and consider it a magnificent book criminally ruined by overly decorative backdrops to the pages of original EC stories. The biographies and text here by Geissman is simply terrific; providing a cogent, articulate, evocative context for these iconic 1950s artists - from Wally Wood, Joe Orlando, Graham "Ghastly" Ingels, to the incredibly talented cover-art genius of Johnny Craig - not to mention the epochal Krigstein and the whole range of science fiction art in this justly remembered EC period. BUT... the clutter of coloured backgrounds placed behind the reproduced pages of stories by these artists made me want to immediately consign this book to an Ingels watery grave in the bayou! It is a travesty. Unbelievably congested, busy, "wriggling amoebae" multi-coloured backgrounds to the reproduced 1950s art visually compete with it throughout. It provides the WORST "visual noise" that totally distracts and competes with the well-reproduced art; the backgrounds COMPETE for attention like trying to read a comic-book in a vast tub of spaghetti, or enlarged coloured slides of dissected innards under a microscope. It becomes visually unbearable, and TOTALLY UNDERMINES the EC art. It is one of the very worst examples of appallingly over-designed books I can think of, where some faddish photo-shop graphics moron has been allowed to run their rampantly stupid techno-boots ALL OVER the crisp, stark integrity of the original artists. Wally Wood will be rolling in his grave. Geissman should be shot for having this desecrating, congested muddle of coloured vomit over-design and compromise the VISUAL CLARITY of these great artists. A TRULY APPALLING DESIGN/BOOK LAYOUT DECISION. ALL THE EDITORS ON THIS PROJECT SHOULD ALSO BE LINED UP FOR THESE TECHNI-COLOUR CRIMES AND GIVEN A BLOODY HIDING. A great book by Grant Geissman that has become a grievous, unredeemable INSULT to the original 1950s artists it is supposed to be honouring.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-12-02
Such a beautiful book....For someone who doesn't know much about EC comics (or for that matter comics printed during the 50s-80s),this book was an eye-opener.It describes the art and lives of the artists and creaters of EC in such a beautiful manner that once I started this book ,I was hooked. What a shame that these very interesting comics were stopped from being published only after a short run at the printing press. The book is done in a beautiful manner with about 14 EC comics stories included. The whole package is very nicely done.Highly recommended, even if you are not a big EC comic fan.Buy it just for the art.If I had a choice I would give it ten stars, one of the best books I own.
Book Description
Sometimes the most important things in life are the hardest to talk about. Whether it's the keys to the car or the keys to life, parents and teens need to find ways to talk to each other about tough issues, such as: safe driving; alcohol and drugs; sex; study habits and grades; honesty; schedules and curfews; family chores; self-discipline.
These issues often tear families apart. But talking about them doesn't have to be destructive---or boring. After interviewing hundreds of teens and parents, the father-and-son team of Terry and Sean Paulson have written a reassuring and practical book that helps teens and parents talk together and laugh together about life's tough issues.
Book Description
It's a fact: 98% of what fathers say is dead wrong. Join famous syndicated radio talk show hosts and ingenious car experts Click and Clack as they bring this little known fact to light. Car Talk Fathers is a hilarious collection of the Tappet brothers' favorite calls over the years about fathers, fatherly advice, and fatherly negotiations around the use of cars and car care. Fathers may be wrong most of the time, but Tom and Ray show us why we love them anyway.

Dads And Cars.......2007-01-01
I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.
Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.
What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.
If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...
Hilarious! Click-n-Clack on Cars, Dads & Families.......2004-12-26
If you have either a car, a Dad or a family, then you will love this show! "Click & Clack" are always great on NPR, and this tape/CD compiles some of their best calls & rants loosely arranged around the themse of cars, Dad's & families. It's wonderful way to spend 90 minutes, especially if you're driving with your family (yes, Dad... you did that too... ;-). Enjoy!
Imagine a $50,000 Miata; Enjoyable but a Lousy Value.......2004-01-02
Car Talk's been on the air for a long time, and they must have plenty of great material for compilations like this. Unfortunately, what went on this edition, while funny enough, just isn't worth the high price. Save your money for blank cassettes and just record the regular show is my advice.
Book Description
"Ninety-nine percent of information in the world comes from our fathers (the other two percent come from us, Click & Clack). Throughout history, when a child asks a father a question, the father feels he must give the child an answer...even if he doesn't know the answer (which, as we said, is 98% of the time).
"What does a mother do when she doesn't know the answer to a child's question? She says, 'Gee, honey, I don't know. That's a good question.' HE says, 'Well, let me explain it to you...' That's your cue as a child that he has absolutely no idea what's going to come out of his mouth next."
Join Tom and Ray Magliozzi (better known to their fans as Click and Clack) for their favorite calls over the years about fatherly advice. You'll be charged, appalled, and, most of all, astounded at how often our fathers are wrong. And you'll be reminded of why we love them anyway.
Book Description
Baugh traces the development of the Jesus-film and through critical film and theological analysis show us the limitations of this genre. Baugh analyzes several important and often prize-winning films showing how each film-maker has created a valid and often complex and challenging metaphor of the Christ-event. He questions many of the traditional approaches to religious film, and offers a new approach and new criteria for the appreciation and judgment of these films.
Customer Reviews:
Cinematic Christology.......2003-05-03
I found Baugh's book not only spot-on in its theology, as did another reviewer, but also more than knowledgeagble about film in general and helpfully incisive in its analyses of individual films about Jesus and those featuring Christ figures. Its take on Denys Arcand's "Jesus of Montreal" is worth the entire price of admission, with a concluding paragraph as verbally eloquent as the final images of the film are visually compelling. Moreover, Baugh's discussions of films by Pasolini, Bresson, and Scorsese simply increase the study's value. I'm at a loss to account for a previous reviewer's warning that a Jesuit priest (which Baugh is, with no attempt to disguise this aspect of his identity) makes judgments about films at least partially on the basis of his faith and his understanding of Christian doctrine. I imagine that any intelligent reader can determine what these judgments are, and from what mindset they spring, and compensate according to his or her own values. Let me add here that I took over ten pages of single-spaced notes, in longhand, from Baugh's text, not because a film and/or thelology course required me to do so, but because Baugh's research and analyses seemed to me so rich and astute. The sections on women as Christ figures, in such films as "Babbett's Feast," "Bagdad Cafe," and "Dead Man Walking," reverberate with surprising insights and good sense. Let me add here that I have never met, do not personally know or correspond with, and have no expectation of any sort of kickback from, the cinematically well-versed Lloyd Baugh.
Primarily a highlight of deficiencies in theology.......2000-08-02
Lloyd Baugh's scholarship is impeccable, but, while his conclusions are clear and well-presented, this is far more a book for those who wish to explore how the human vision obscures the perception of Christology than for anyone who has more of an interest in artistic forms. Baugh indeed gives much attention to technical presentation, and his extensive knowledge of cinematic art is unquestionable, but it is a curiously scientific effort, and somehow unsatisfying.
All would depend on perspective. In my own case, though I agreed with many of the author's conclusion and found some thought provoking, some of the very aspects I found excellent in certain films (such as the "extra-evangelical" character development in "Jesus of Nazareth") are explored by the author as diminishing the gospel message. The artist in me was disappointed that I found the book so dull - especially because I recognised that, as far as theology is concerned, Baugh is spot on.
The book has great merits, but don't acquire it as a gift for a film or theatre buff.

Love this book. David is so talented, so creative and so over the top. I love how he shares his details, the how-tos. The photos are amazing. I want a party like these!
Happy Birthday to Me.......2007-05-07
Really fun Birthday ideas. I especially liked the African safari party for the retired man going on an African safari. He had really creative ideas for making an African theme that didn't really have anything to do with Africa but still came together to form this perfect ambiance.

a MUST read.......2006-06-22
Having a summer birthday has never been much fun, it somehow always goes uncelebrated. This year I was inspired to throw my own festivities. What was supposed to be a quick search for party ideas turned into a total body experience after delving into David Tutera's book Big Birthdays. In his book he executed and fabulously captured five birthday parties exploring the five senses (look, scent, texture, sound and taste) through each event. His tips ('Tutera Tips') were the most helpful; it was almost as if he could hear my questions and answer my thoughts concerning each party scenario. After my celebration they will have to reprint the book, Tutera's ideas were truly an inspiration. This book is a must-have for any status of event planner.
Highly Recommended.......2006-06-20
This year my grandmother ceebrated her 80th birthday, and with that, I wanted to surprise her with an elgant dinner party for some of her closest family and friends. Having never embarked on such a thing before, I set out to Amazon to find a book that would help me from beginning to end. David Tutera's latest book, Big Birthdays, gave me many great ideas. I immediately fell in love with the sophisticated White-On-White dinner party. The instructions and focus on details allowed me to easily recreate the atmosphere and ultimately throw a spectacular party!! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to host such an event and will definately look to David Tutera in the future for inspiration for another great get together!
Book Description
Operator books are based on the principles of adult learning to meet the reading needs of a shopfloor audience. Written at the appropriate reading level, these books are heavily illustrated with photos and drawings. The text is set up with one concept for every two to four pages so that it can be easily read in chunks; headers and assists in the margin make the significance of each section stand out. Each chapter summarizes main concepts and tools at the beginning and lists application questions at the end. This particular book presents the main concepts and tools from Hirano's 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace. Hirano discusses how the 5S theory fosters efficiency, maintenance, and continuous improvement in all areas of the company, from the plant floor to the sales office. It explains why the 5S's are important and gives the who, what, where, and how of 5S implementation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for implementing 5S.......2006-10-11
Very easy reading within a few hours. It covers all the 5S in a simple practical way with excellent examples. Shows a lot of pictures that help visualizing work area before and after 5S. I recommend strongly this book. Eleven plants in the comapny i work for are using it now.
Excellent for floor level.......2006-09-04
This book is written at the perfect level for floor implmentation. It is a no bones, to the point, with wonderful examples. Very easy reading within a few hours. I will be taking it to my Plant Manager to help convince him of the advantages of 5S.
A great start to 5S.......2005-09-30
This book is a great informational tool to get the ideas of the Five S concept into your employees. It is an easy read and doesn't heavily focus on how to implement these ideas but rather what to look for to help you implement Five S.
A poor book with little content .......2005-07-20
Disapointing. Here we have a $25 book with 120 pages, probably at least 100 of which could be eliminated. The book is wordy, vague and full of meaningless examples and ambiguous statements. Don't waste your money.
Operational Excellence Team Member (Allvac).......2001-09-21
This book does an outstanding job of conveying the need to start with 5s as the building block of Lean Manufacturing. The material covered is easy to understand and easily conveyed to the employees who are impacted by these practices. I would recommend this book to anyone considering going lean.
