Get out your magnifier!.......2006-02-07
This book is for the serious collector of vintage valentines. I bought the book wanting to look at beautiful victorian images of love, cupids, children etc., but was extremely disappointed when the cards were too small to view comfortably. If you are a collector and want to know dates and monetary value of antique Valentine Day cards, this is the book for you. There are hundreds of cards. I wanted something altogether different. Just wanted to clarify what you should expect if you purchase this book.
From one of seven loving grandchildren.......1999-10-12
This book was sent to my father Dr. John G. Scott, Jr. by my aunt Jean Stauffer, who is the oldest serviving member of the John Green Scott Sr. family. Both who are over 80 now loved this book and it has been greatly enjoyed by Dr. John G. Scott III, Charles D. Scott, James E. Scott, Myself and all of our family which extends to four more generations including John G. Scott, IV. Our grandfathter was not only a fine commercial artist with the Gibson Card Company for 30 years but was also a great landscape and protrait artist and also a respected four term state legislator and 40 year hospital administrator. Art was always his first love and the portions of this book with his work are a reflection of that love and will be treasured by all, especially by the people of Pennsylvania where he spent his entire life.

No words?.......2007-05-19
For a book that I didnot realize contained few words, it was joyful none-the-less. Mr. Silverstein is perfectly capable of conveying all desired meanings (with his typical humor and sarcasm) through well crafted pictures.
Get several copies.......2007-01-04
I owned the original, giant-sized edition of this marvelous book 20 years ago. Since then, several friends have admired and coveted it. (As already stated, let me emphasize anyhow -- NO KIDLETS should get their hands on it.) When I wanted to give a copy as a gift, I was dismayed to find that this book was now a collectible treasure, selling for as much as $300 on eBay. Fast forward, and hooray!!! This Christmas I accidentally discovered this anniversary edition here on Amazon. It's smaller than the original, but that doesn't matter. Do yourself a favor and stash a few copies aside to give friends later. Not your uptight, fundamentalist Christian friends, mind you, just the cool people. ;]
Amazing.......2006-05-18
This is one of those books that through humor can make you look at your world in a different light.
NOT your children's Shel Silverstein's book!.......2006-04-28
Our school library received this book through the school board's "approved" book list. Obviously, the author's name was enough for the reviewer to okay this title. Upon receiving the book, it was obvious that the list-maker at the school board had relied only on the Shel Silverstein name without actually opening the book for review. Although very cute for the 18+ age group, this is most certainly NOT a children's book. The grapic adult cartoons are funny if you are a "grown-up" but can give your children a crash course in sex-ed if you don't screen this book first. Funny for adults; not intended for children!
a second chance for a hidden treasure.......2006-02-03
i found my copy of this treasure in a used bookstore 20 years ago. when i took it to the register the clerk looked down at me and said "I wondered who would buy that thing." i can't believe how narrow minded he was! this book is the most clearly drawn picture of the human condition i have ever found. i took it to a pshych. class in college, highlighting some of my favorites. i had to bring back 3 night running because everyone wanted to read/see the whole thing. great extra credit points just for owning it. it is for adults and it will make you laugh, but it will also make you think. enjoy.

Great chick gift!.......2001-11-21
A good friend of mine gave me this book. Each page has a brief little blurb about girlfriends with a drawing illustrating it on the facing page, and it's the drawings that totally make the book. Some of them are really funny, and several of them remind me of my own friends. In fact, I think most women will kind of see themselves and their friends in some part of the book.
The other thing I like is that although it's a cute book, the illustrations are a little edgy so it doesn't come off as overly sweet or anything.
Note to fellow fans of the magazine Real Simple: If you like Monica Sheehan's "Real Hard" feature, you'll love this book!

Book Description
In these powerful screenplays, Andrew Kevin Walker provides two compelling stories of dark deeds and dark motives, in which the forces of good are pitted against the many forms of evil. Seven, which starred Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow, followed the trail of a serial killer, whose victims were murdered in accordance with the seven deadly sins. 8mm focuses on Tom Welles-portrayed by Nicolas Cage-an honest and hardworking private detective, who discovers an appalling 8mm "snuff" film in which a teenage girl was raped and killed. Hired to track down the masked murderers shown in the film, Welles reconstructs the dead girl's unhappy life; in the course of his investigation, he learns that all fantasies can be filmed to order, at a terrible price, and he becomes obsessed with avenging the girl's death.

"This Is Not Going To Have A Happy Ending"; Indeed.......2003-03-30
Here is Andrew Kevin Walker's justly acclaimed screenplay for "Seven", plus his first draft script for the Joel Schumacher fiasco "8mm." The first script is pretty much intact in David Fincher's brilliant film. The result was the best scary movie of its genre of the 1990's; in my opinion, even better than "The Silence of the Lambs" because of "Seven"'s deeper, darker moral (even theological) vision. Fincher omitted a prologue and epilogue featuring Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and discarded some lines of dialogue, but essentially everything was used. "8mm" is a very different case. As Walker explains in an interview that prefaces the book, director Joel Schumacher dumbed down his script, injecting spurious, lumbering melodrama and blunting the thematic amiguities so the result was a stupid revenge fantasy. (The Nicolas Cage character is given explicit permission to do the things he does in the final act in Schumacher's movie.) To be fair, Walker's original version is so incredibly dark that no Hollywood studio would ever want to film it. It should have been an independent film. In the introductory interview Walker also discusses how he wrote the scripts and how he got an agent to place "Seven" with the studios. He seems like a smart guy who is self-aware enough to keep a check on pretentiousness in his work. I would now like to read his original screenplay for "Sleepy Hollow" and his adaptation of Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage", two other works he mentions in this book.
Seven.......2002-05-17
This is tragic but amazing story. In this story Mill`s wife does very important role. She hates cities, and she doesn`t want to have a baby in the city.
Through the story the auther uses the contraction between city and country. To be honest he doesn`t like cities. The people in the cities have many sins, for exampled, greed, gluttony, wrath, envy, sloth, pride and lust.he tries to show that to live in cities means to commit sins.
The auther wants to make people reflect their life. For example the man who is described as the symbol as 'gluttony' is, I think normal man or the man who is everywhere. However the auther tries to describe him as the man who is really sinful man. To be fat or gluttony is absolutely sinful.
However, to be honest, I cannot understand the ending. What did Doe want to do? If he kills six or seven men, is it connected to something? I think his crimes is for only his sitisfaction, so it never has influence. From the begining to the ending, only Doe knows everything and only he knows what would happen next. Without doubt this crime is only understood by Doe, but this story is expressing America.
well - written book...........2002-05-17
It's the most surprising and tragic story I've ever read.
I've read this book 2 times and watched the film.Although I'm not a christian, the seven deadly sins are the most serious sins...Only
God can forgive us.The city always described as a mess, noise, gloomy, desperate and violence, and the weather had been raining, dark, mist and cloudy. But in the end, despite of cruelty story, the weather was brilliant.I think it's very ironical.
Somerset has got 7days until he retires and doesn`t want to see any criminal. After he found the body of "the fat man" ,he knew, it wasn't going to be easy. Finally he decided to stay to fight the fight in the city.
It concerns only Seven.......2000-08-21
It is surprising to read the screenplay after having seen the film several times and exploited it in class with senior high school students. There are fundamental differences and the screenplay does not center the story the same way as the film. The screenplay is definitely centered from beginning to end on Somerset and not on Mills, or even on the couple Mills-Somerset. The question that comes up then is not whether Mills is going to flunk or not, but whether Somerset is going to leave the police and the City or not. The first and last scenes of thes creenplay have been cut off. Apart from that the differences are essentially details, but as I said before, the perspective is different. The numerous and long stage directions are also interesting because they give more meaning to the visual details, and they also explain better why some details are there, but not always. It does not tell us why the apartment of the 3rd victims is number 303 and Doe's apartment is 6A. But there we can easily find the connection, and the symbolism. But Mills is shown as an angry and ambitious man who does not have the patience it takes to cope with the perverted world in which we live, or die. Mills is definitely angrier and he reacts more violently in the screenplay. We also find out that the stage directions explain his character better than the way Brad Pitt plays it. Brad Pitt appears to lack some depth and not to be able to show the psychological complexity that we find in the screenplay, whereas Morgan Freeman is a lot better. That's probably why the film was decentered from Somerset and centered on the couple Mills-Somerset, not to put Brad Pitt in a secondary position. One element though in the screenplay is to be criticized : the metronome used by Somerset to recapture his balance at the end of a day, to erase the noise of the city, to come back to some regular rhythm and to go to sleep is definitely overused. Once is enough to understand. Three times is too much. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, Paris Universities II and IX.
Brilliant Screenwriting.......1999-12-03
Andrew Kevin Walker is a favorite of mine. Most people wouldn't recognize his name on the screen credits, but for guys like me, we know what to expect. His brilliant talent for weaving a textured plot together is, I believe, unparalleled. This book preserves the two scripts that made him a sought-after A-list writer. I can remember when his first film was released, Brainscan. Not as dense or textured as his new stuff but still not bad. Later on he helped pen the adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel, Hideaway and did an uncredited rewrite for Event Horizon and The Game. If you are serious into screenwriting or just appreciate the mechanics of a good film, buy this book right now. It's a good bet.
Book Description
This text, designed for a one or two term course in the history of the Western classical tradition in music, discusses the cultural and historical forces that have shaped music and explores the history of musical styles.
Customer Reviews:
The PERFECT music history survey text!.......2002-06-28
I took a graduate music history survey course under the instruction of the author, Douglass Seaton, at Florida State University in the Fall semester of 1997. Though I hold no degree in musicology (all my degrees are in trombone performance), I have found this text to be the perfect reference, both in the context of a survey course, and especially in preperation for diagnostic/preliminary exams.
The book is somewhat smaller than either the Grout/Palisca or the Stolba texts (as the book was authored with a one-semester survey course in mind), and perhaps doesn't contain all of the minutia for which the Grout/Palisca "A History of Western Music" is known. The benefit is an extremely readable source, tongue-in-cheek at times, that is still highly detailed, but compelling enough to gain a thorough perspective of the history of western music (historical contexts, performance practices, transitions between defined periods).
I have recommended this book to everyone who has asked for my advice for graduate-school entrance/preliminary exam preparation.
A very thorough and interesting text.......1999-11-03
This was my music history textbook when I was an undergrad, and I found it so fascinating that I changed my major to musicology and reread the book from cover to cover on my own time.

this is the standard to which Squeeze books should be held.......2007-02-01
- very clear explanations of each family of squeezes
- discussion of how they are different from other families (Simple, vs Double, Squeeze without the Count vs ...)
- LOTS of examples
- LOTS of problems
- LOTS of variations (different types of squeezes in each family). For example different types (names/variations) of Double Squeezes
A fabulous book. There is so much there that you wont be able to remember many of them. Thats ok, start with just Simple squeezes. Then add Double or Strip Squeeze or anotehr family from the first few chapters.
Because of the nature of squeezes I would love a companion workbook with 500 problems. OR better yet a souped up set of deals for Bridge master.
A classic, 5 stars
On goes the light bulb.......2006-11-17
I didn't use to know how to do or look for squeezes. Now I do. It may have come from playing more. It may have come from trying harder. I think it came from this book.
Of course, Watson covers squeezes, briefly. This book is all about squeezes, in a very engaging way. And while I may not be able to tell you the difference between a stepping-stone and a suicide squeeze, I now know what to look for in a squeeze, the distribution the opponents need, and how to actually perform at least simple squeezes whenever they present themselves.
Clear, good coverage.......2006-03-03
The techniques are clearly presented, with lots of good examples. At the end of each section is a set of problems for the reader to solve. The book is entertaining to read, which is difficult for a book on Squeeze play!
The only drawback was since each chapter was specialized (i.e. Criss Cross Squeeze) the reader knows the exact technique required. It might have been betetr to have had a mixed problem set after every 3 chapters, so the reader wouldn't be sure if they had to perform a double squeeze or a simple squeeze.
Terence Reeses Squeeze Play Made Easy is also excellent.
Clyde Loves Bridge Squeezes Complete may have been a classic 40 years ago, but there are better books available today (like this one).
Accessible and well-written........2002-11-09
David Bird does a great job of introducing squeezes in a non-threatening, easy-to-follow manner. He explains the mechanics of the various types in a straightforward way and doesn't get hung up on the nitty-gritty technical details. Instead, he focuses on providing example hands that are followed by a thorough explanation and which clearly illustrate the principles being discussed. I especially enjoyed the "The Stars Come Out to Play" section of each chapter, which showcases hands played successfully by expert players using the various types of squeezes. The quiz hands at the end of each chapter are also well done and do a good job of reinforcing the lessons presented.

New secrets to getting what you want every time
The Science of Influence shows readers how to get anyone to say "yes" in eight minutes or less. Synthesizing the latest research in the field of influence with real-world tested experiences, it presents simple secrets that help readers turn a "no" into a "yes." Every secret in this book has been rigorously tested, validated, and found reliable academically and in the real world.
Readers learn dozens of all-new techniques and strategies for influencing others including how to reduce resistance to rubble; send unconscious nonverbal messages that are consciously undetectable; make people feel instantly comfortable in your presence; decode body language; build credibility; and be persistent without being a pain.
The Science of Influence turns the enigmatic art of influence and persuasion into a science anyone can master.
Kevin Hogan, PsyD (Eagan, MN), is a dynamic motivational speaker and expert on unconscious influence and body language for the BBC, the New York Post, and such popular magazines as Cosmopolitan and Playboy. He teaches Persuasion and Influence at the University of St. Thomas Management Center. He is the author of 12 books including bestsellers such as Irresistible Attraction: Secrets of Personal Magnetism and The Psychology of Persuasion.

You need to look no further for sales success.......2007-09-23
Whether it's body language, alpha strategies, omega strategies, 10 laws of persuasion, building rapport, self branding, oscillation, covert hypnosis or you just want to be privy to information most other authors would and do span out over 3 or 4 books then this is an absolute must read for you.
Kevin Hogan again delivers where others leave you wanting and does so not in a way that is hard to understand or in a way that leaves you wondering whether it really does work like that but in a way that is completely and wholly backed up with real, provable scientific study and results.
I am not for one minute not to try other authors attempts but what i am saying is that you'll be very hard pushed to find a title with so much usable information in it.

A must read!.......2007-09-19
After reading Psychology of Persuasion, get this book! Kevin Hogan continues to bring new and fresh concepts to you regarding the ability to Influence people. His dedication to the field is unfounded anywhere else.
A Must Read.......2007-09-13
Kevin Hogan is clearly a leading expert on influence and persuasion. He has done it again. This book has a lot of great information in it compiled from the author's own research, various studies and papers.
The author goes into great detail of how we are all influenced daily into making decisions of "yes" or "no" and how both internal and external influences affect those decisions at the conscious and unconscious level of the brain. This is about how to create change in others and we are introduced to the Delta and Omega models of influence. From beginning to end, there are countless examples of persuasion techniques and influence strategies.
I personally like chapter 11 entitled "I'll think about it". If you are in sales and have had a customer response as such, now you will understand why they said it and learn how to influence them to "yes".
Simply, a great book!
Eliot Hoppe
Proven Laws Meet Current Research and Applications - Reader Wins!.......2007-09-13
Kevin Hogan presents persuasion, influence and decision making research, liberally sprinkled with real world examples and humor, to break down the turning a "no" into a "yes" process. The "Science" of Influence goes well beyond science to the "art" of persuasion.
The strategies in this book show how to reduce resistance, build credibility, make others more comfortable in your presence, ask the right questions and be persistent without offending the other party. Importantly, this book covers the essentials of nonverbal communication. It also addresses both internal factors (like habits, routines) and external factors (like speaker's appearance, the environment) that affect a listener.
The heart of this book outlines and applies the Ten Laws of Influence. You will want to highlight and periodically revisit these laws and applications.
This book is a must read for sales and marketing professionals and others who persuade for a living, including lawyers. With its coverage of foundational persuasion principles and its incorporation of the latest research, it has much to offer to any student of persuasion and influence. Even the experienced social scientist and persuader will find some new tips or techniques.

Author, Sales: Powerful New Strategies for Sales Success
An edge on the competition.......2007-09-05
If you would like an extra edge on the competition, buy this book. I don't know all the tricks of the trade but I do want to understand the Science of Influence. After reading this book I changed several little things in my approach and the delivery of my presentation. The little things add up.
You might not know what you are doing to turn your clients against you. The Science of Influence will help you understand what you may be doing wrong. I now remove all negative influencers in all my interactions with my clients. The most powerful key in the book is learning that "no" can be turned into "yes". I know every sales trainer says that, but Kevin shows you the "how" and "why" a No can be turned into Yes. If you are in sales (and who doesn't use influence) you need all the education you can get. Kevin's book should be on your top shelf!
