Book Description
Harlem has captivated the imagination of writers, artists, intellectuals, and politicians around the world since the early decades of this century. Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance examines the cultural reawakening of Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s as a key moment in twentieth-century art history, one that transcended regional and racial boundaries. Published to coincide with the exhibition that opens in England and travels to the United States, this catalog reflects the Harlem Renaissance's impressive range of art forms--literature, music, dance, theater, painting, sculpture, photography, film, and graphic design. The participants included not only artists based in New York, but also those from other parts of the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe.
Richard J. Powell and David A. Bailey present selected works that focus on six themes: Representing "The New Negro;" Another Modernism; Blues, Jazz, and the Performative Paradigm; The Cult of the Primitive; Africa: Inheritance and Seizure; and Jacob Lawrence's Toussaint L'Ouverture series. The visual arts from 1919 to 1938 included in the book suggest the extraordinary vibrancy of the time when Harlem was a metaphor for modernity. In spite of the importance of the Harlem Renaissance to early twentieth-century American culture and to the artistic climate of "Jazz Age" Paris and Weimar Berlin, few art exhibitions have been devoted exclusively to the subject. Rhapsodies in Black will be welcomed for its unique presentation of this creative time.

expanding the scope of a central moment in modern art.......1998-07-27
This book provides those who are more likely to have believed the Harlem Renaissance to be entirely literary and entirely Harlem-centered with evidence of the all-encompassing scope and international import of this crucial, modern, blackened artistic surge. The exploration of black identity and construction of black nationality called the Harlem Renaissance is insightfully revisited through the social and artistic problems enacted in the works, within the voices, and upon the bodies of protagonists: Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, and surprisingly, Orson Welles. This book is a fine complement to books which focus on literary-hitsorical aspects (such as David L. Lewis' _When Harlem was in Vogue_) and those which focus on music such as Angela Davis' _Blues Legacies and Black Feminism_ and Albert Murray's _Stomping the Blues_). It is a a fabulous expansion of the artistic territory encompassed in black art. Maya Angleou has said: "I am human, and therefore nothing h! uman can escape my grasp." I believe that black art has languished too long in the storage bin where fads and fanices go to die. _Black Rhapsodies_ rescues the Renaissance from this fate by positing black art as a philosphical stance, therefore attainable in varied ways throughout the post WWI world--not as the exotic and undisciplined, irregular expressions of primitive black jungle souls on the drum-pulsing streets of 20s Harlem. I couldn't agree more, and I hope that the idea that black art is both a real category and a complex one full of contadictions is adopted in the teaching of the Renaissance.
My one complaint is minor and may stem from my own unfamiliarity with the indexing system of books on art. I found it difficult to locate quickly the visual art being described in certain passages. If there were a more convenient way on idexing the art or of expaining the system to the novice reader, it would be appreciated.

Book Description
The encounter of artists Berlinde De Bruyckere and Martin Honert in the exhibition provides the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf with a great opportunity of presenting two exceptional positions in the field of contemporary sculpture. The title itself alludes to both a special approach towards the subject matter and the actual context of the works themselves; both sculptors derive their creative impetus from the realm of things concealed, from memory and remembrance, from the substrate and sediments of dreams, as well as from images and photographs.

Book Description
Belgian artist Berlinde de Bruyckere works in wax, wood, wool, horse skin and hair, among other materials, creating compelling forms that suggest distorted human and animal bodies. Her figures are often faceless and fragmentary, perched precariously on high stools or suspended from walls, ceilings or tall iron columns. Each of the eight works illustrated here is photographed from multiple views and approaches, offering the reader their intricate "skin" textures and presence at closer range than would be possible if one were standing in front of the works in a gallery. De Bruyckere was born in Ghent in 1964, and came to international attention at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and has since shown in Paris, Berlin and London.

Book Description
Debuting in 1999, Get Fuzzy has rocketed to the top of the charts. Now appearing in more than 200 newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner, the Chicago Tribune, the L.A. Times, the Boston Globe, and the Detroit Free Press, Get Fuzzy has become a hit cartoon with its bitingly funny portrait of single life with pets. And why not? The laughs come fast and furious. Get Fuzzy features Rob Wilco, a single, mild-mannered advertising executive who's the so-called guardian of Bucky and Satchel, anthropomorphic scamps that still live by their animal instincts. Bucky, a temperamental cat who carries a boom box and goes on spending sprees, definitely calls the shots in this eclectic household, while Satchel is a kindly canine with a sensitive soul who tries to remain neutral, even though he bears the brunt of his feline companion's mischief.Between the three of them, the Wilco household faces a whole host of trials and tribulations that classify them as family. Satchel wants his boundaries respected. Bucky refuses to eat vegetables but insists on snarfing up Rob's plants. Rob tries to meet women, but his pets continually subvert his efforts. In every frame, Get Fuzzy depicts the hilarious war between the species, giving the animals an equal footing in hilarious one-upmanship.Get Fuzzy has become the comic strip for everyone who loves their pets with an attitude. That said, Groovitude is Get Fuzzy at its finest.

Funny!.......2007-09-27
these books just crack me up, my only complaint is they are too short! I never want to put them down, and read the whole thing in one sitting.
Another great Get Fuzzy Treasury.......2007-08-11
I won't go into how fantastic this comic strip is, but it is easily my favorite comic strip of all time. :)
For the uninitiated, there are 6 collections so far and three treasuries. The seventh collection is not yet released.
Please keep in mind that each treasury is two collections put together, so as far as I know the treasuries are the same as two of the collections, except I believe the treasuries have the Sunday comics in color while the collections have them in black and white.
In chronological order, the collections are:
1. The Dog is Not a Toy: House Rule #4
2. Fuzzy Logic: Get Fuzzy 2
3. The Get Fuzzy Experience
4. Blueprint for Disaster
5. Say Cheesy: A Get Fuzzy Collection 5
6. Scrum Bums
7. I'm Ready for My Movie Contract: A Get Fuzzy Collection (not yet released)
The treasuries are:
1. Groovitude (encompassing collections 1 and 2).
2. Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun (encompassing collections 3 and 4).
3. Loserpalooza (encompassing collections 5 and 6).
These comics are beyond hilarious, and I would highly recommend them to pet lovers/haters of all ages. :)
Hysterically Funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-16
Darby Conley has successfully introduced the next great strip in the vein of "Calvin & Hobbes" meets "The Far Side". This strip is a riot even if you hate pets - I have copies of many of the strips on my office wall. Buy this "Treasury" version as it contains all the strips from the previous 2 "Collections" and is only a little more expensive.
Fuzzy!.......2007-01-10
This book rocks! Get Fuzzy is so good and Groovitude has some of the best comics in it!
Cat + Dog + Man + Darby = Hilarity.......2006-01-27
This is unabashedly my favorite comic strip. Yes I have owned a cat and a dog, at the same time, but that is not the reason that I love this strip. I love this strip simply because it makes me laugh out loud at every panel. There is no set-up, set-up, punch line in the Peanuts/Dagwood strips of yore. This strip is fresh and funny.
Darby has taken a cliché situation, and given it new life. This is not Garfield, Marmaduke, or Heathcliff. This is Bucky and Satchel, a conniving Siamese cat and a dimwitted pooch, who were taken in by Rob, their soft-hearted keeper. This is the "Seinfeld" of comic strips. There is no ongoing plot, just the characters acting out what is their usual, and hilarious, behavior. Just as "Seinfeld" made occasional references to past episodes, so does this strip. The memory of Darby is long, the opposite of many other contemporary comic strip artists. The funniest strips are the ones that relate back to past strips.
Therefore, the treasury is the ideal place to start if you have just become a fan of Get Fuzzy. It contains mostly strips from the first two books and is a great place to start to learn all about the early adventures of Bucky and Satchel and Rob and Joe Doman.

Great little and fun booklet.......2007-01-07
Remember, this is a guide. It is great fun. Many interesting descriptions and a few tech BW images of comm badge, phaser modifications and alien monsters. There is also a description where and who first encounter a problem (reference to Star Trek episode).
The most interesting writing style - it's like all the Star Trek universe is NOW. Great.
I was a little disapointed - I was hoping for more. It's too short.
Remarkably good reading.......2004-01-13
I used to have a very simple definition of a textbook: a book that contains a great deal of factual information, but puts you to sleep while attempting to absorb it. This totally fails to meet the second criteria (unlike, for instance, the TNG Technical Manual). Essentially, this is a collection of Trek trivia, in terms of equipment, creatures, and medical techniques, from the shows. However, from the style it is written in one can clearly picture a Starfleet officer actually reading and using this Guide. The descriptions are very clear, concise and interesting. One of them - Section 1.11, "Surviving Atmospheric Re-entry in a Pressure Suit" - is downright compelling reading. The mental picture of each step is incredibly vivid, and so involving that one can actually feel worried when reading the fatal consequences of anything going wrong. This is a brilliant piece of writing and extremely entertaining. For someone starting to collect Trek trivia books and/or manuals, this is definitely the one to recommend buying first.
How to survive, when survival is key........2003-12-25
This is a great book for any Star Trek fan. This is a documented list of unconventional uses of standard equipment for situations that Star Fleet personel may encounter that requires a creative, if not vital, method for survival.
Great book. A lot of technical information, and if you're a fanfic writer of Star Trek, there are a lot good things you can incorporate into your writing.
Star Trek: The Starfleet Survival Guide.......2002-09-13
Star Trek: The Starfleet Survival Guide written by David Mack is a unique little tome in that it is written in computer manual style... starting with 1.0 and ending at 4.15.But more importantly, this book makes you alert to the countless dangers that arise in space and how to cope.
This book has uses for standard-issue equipment that are nonstandard, for exanple remodulating a universal translator into a jamming device, recalibrating transporter enhancer armbands as temporal shields, or this one that you just can't live without sterilizing food and water with a phaser.
The second chapter is unconventional medicine which I found to be enlightening like modifying a type-1 or type-2 phaser into a scalpel, neutralizing Denevan neural parasites, or this one the proven herbal remedies for Mugato venom.
The third chapter is dangerous life-forms which helps with some very unique advice such as avoiding mind control by Elasian women, surviving an attack by a Crysstalline enity, or this onenavigating inside a Borg Cube or Sphere.
Chapter four is extreme scenarios like the following inducing solar eruptions for tactical purposes, surviving if you are shifted out of phase, or this one detecting and escaping temporal causality loops.
This book is full of things that happen or could happen and what to do. So, if you are traveling the universe soon... get your copy and don't leave home without it. There are illustrations in this book that help take you through the techno-jargon and I only mentioned some of the information in each chapter. Reading this book will enlighten you to a lot more survival information.
As it states in the book, "it should be noted that "The Starfleet Survival Guide" does not contain information on basic survival techniques..." This guide is intended as a specialized supplement to the basic survival manual. It reads quickly and is a weath of quirky information.
Book Description
Based on an event held at the Imperial War Museum in London, this book is a unique blend of voices and perspectives, including archivists, curators, filmmakers, and Holocaust survivors. Tracing the Holocaust, each section of the book is dedicated to a different category of the moving image: film as witness; film as propaganda; documentary in film and television; and feature films. Each section examines specific films in the broad context of the history of the Holocaust and how they have contributed to a wider understanding of the tragedy.
Accesible and stimulating, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject, discussing such titles as The Eternal Jew (1940) and Night and Fog (1956) and such subjects as the use of film and video in war crimes trials. The book also encourages the reader to move beyond Schindler's List (1993) and Life is Beautiful (1997) to other classics of the genre.

the real 'st.jerome' would disapprove, but..........2003-05-14
This book is purported elsewhere to include a vinyl 7" one side spoken word, the other several locked-grooves for mixing--The friend of mine that has that record said he REALLY digs it. I don't see details of the 7" in the 'product details' above, but... I'm told that it is supposed to be included. Otherwise, I generally think this is more for the die-hard fans of GPO/PTV than for the curious. The overall look and feel of the book is kind of lo-fi in the format of the Re:Search books, which is ok, because it makes this more affordable for its seekers and won't lose Soft Skull Press much money (or at least I hope not, bcs "they'rre grrite"), but ultimately the color illustrations are kind of lacking for something that's trying to present GPO as an accomplished artist, and this doesn't really acheive the presentation required of a proper art-monograph. (of course, this review doesn't meet the criteria of a proper review either, so forget me) die-hards will require this, and those interested in knowing the genesis ov Genesis P-Orridge should start with the Wreckers of Civilization: History of Coum and TG book which is much more exhuastively historical of Gen's earlier period, and ... well... perhaps I should go and review that one elsewhere. Oh yeah, I think Gen would want me to sign off with something like ASSUME POWER FOCUS, TAKE CARE & CONTROL!

2 Thumbs up.......2004-03-03
I give this crossoword puzzle book two thumbs up.
Book Description
What forces drive competition in an industry? What moves will competitors make? How will one's industry evolve? How do strategic planners respond to competitive actions? How can a firm be best positioned to compete in the long run?
Michael Porter's Competitive Strategy is the definitive work on the subject of "competitive strategy," the hottest new concept in American business today. The book addresses major questions of vital concern to managers, and presents a comprehensive set of analytical techniques for understanding a business and the behavior of its competitors.
Step-by-step, Porter provides the techniques and tools managers need to successfully conduct an industry and competitor analysis. Just a few examples:
- The fundamental factors determining the nature of competition in a business.
- The three generic competitive strategies for coping with industry structure: cost leadership, differentiation, and "focus."
- How to recognize and act on "market signals" from competitors.
- Forecasting how the structure of an industry will evolve.
- The costs, risks, and returns of a "preemptive" strategy.
- Competing effectively in an emerging industry.
- Selecting new industries to enter.
Beginning with a comprehensive set of tools and techniques for analyzing any industry and any array of competitors, the book moves on to examine competitive strategies for fragmented industries, emerging industries, maturing industries, declining industries and global industries. The final section of the book provides analytical techniques for making the important strategic decisions that confront firms -- vertical integration, major capacity expansion, divestment and entry into new businesses.
This book will enable managers to anticipate and prepare for -- rather than simply react to -- sudden competitor moves, new entries into their business, and shifts in industry structure, as well as to take forceful positive action to improve a company's position through tested competitive strategies. Competitive Strategy is destined to become the Bible for Fortune 500 managers, company advisers, and securities analysts.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic.......2007-04-16
This book is perhaps the best overview of competitive strategy analysis ever written. The book together with Porter's "Competitive Advantage" and "Competitive Advantage of Nations" has remained as the model or classic work on business strategy. Although the business world has evolved significantly since 1980 when the book was published, the framework and analysis of the book is still applicable and relevant today. Therefore, this book is a "must-have" for anyone involved in Strategic Planning and Analysis since many of his concepts can easily be applied to the current economic environment, with some necessary adaptations. The framework Porter lays out is a great starting point for any analysis of industries or competitors.
The book is well written in a clear and straightforward, and easy to understand format, although sometimes I got the sense that the book can tend to repeat itself. However, the clarity of the concepts is a welcome change from some lesser textbooks you sometimes meet in many other books on business strategy, and his repetition serves to reinforce his message.
However, the rapid advances of technology mean that there is need for some adaptation of some of the concepts to take into account the changing paradigms such as the need to delight the customer with the competitor not being the centre of gravity but rather the customer. In this regard, the book has some limitations, because the competitive dimension is frequently less important than the customer element in the current environment.
Despite these weaknesses, this book provides an excellent start of how to think about competitors, as long as you keep a close look at the additional dimensions after grasping the analysis.
Comprehensive checklist.......2007-02-17
This book is a checklist, a great checklist for anyone doing analysis on industries or companies. Porter is a hard to miss if you work in this area, so you might as well get through this book, and you'll know what everyone is talking about, and you'll also get a good framework that ensures that your analysis doesn't skip important points.
Reading Art of War and those kinds of books gives you another kind of strategy, which is very useful in combination with the things Porter gives you. Basically, I think Porter has done a great job of "summarizing" the strategy-process, and this is why the book is fo famous, and it is also why I give it 4 and not 5 stars. With sound theory and thorough work you will get the same insights as with Porters framework, and you will also be better equipped to deal with the peculiarities in every situation. Nevertheless, many peole don't have time/the interest for more than a summary, so for them this book is great. And for the rest it's great to get through it to learn the "common language" that is prevalent in the industry of strategy and anlysis today.
Landmark Book on How to Think about Competing.......2006-10-11
"Competitive Strategy" was one of my favorite books when I was studying for an MBA. It continues to be one of my key reference books. It will help you learn how to think about competing. Although the concepts contained are now viewed as common sense, so many people ignore these basics and fail. This is a must read for anyone in business.
You Know It's a Classic -- So Just Buy It.......2006-07-20
There's no point in me telling you something you already know (this seminal book came out over 25 years ago -- its REQUIRED reading at every respectable MBA program I can think of).
What I will say is that this is a critical book to own if you want to understand how and why firms choose to penetrate (or avoid) markets. Speaking from my own experience, this is also a MUST HAVE if you want to understand industry dynamics if you are a consultant, or in my case, an aspiring equity research analyst.
An excellent book.......2006-06-17
Much has been written about Porter in these reviews and elsewhere, so I won't repeat that information. Instead, I will focus on what drew me to this book, and from that, what its strengths and weeknesses are.
I heard about "Competitive Strategy" because it was referenced by a number of stock analysts seeking to determine or project earnings of a particular company going forward. Read with that position alone in mind, "Competitive Strategy" is fairly esoteric. The book itself is written more from the perspective of a consultant or "big picture" thinker than it is from, say, the view of a financer or investor. While that was somewhat of a drawback for me for my purposes, it certainly does not detract from the overall value of the book.
The book itself is quite readable, despite the academic credentials of the author and much of its audience and its theoretical bent. However, readers seeking quantafiable information will not find formulas or other information of a comparable nature to guide them. This is not unexpected, yet Porter's book is cited or referenced by a fair number of stock market analysts seeking support a variety of conclusions they've reached. After reading the book myself, I am forced to conclude that (i) there is no crystal ball for anyone to determine the future, and (ii) while Porter's book is an invaluable tool for management of a particular entity to use in assessing its competitive environment and strategy, it does not provide the individual investor with the ability to read futur events.
In all, Porter's book is a great read, and should add greatly to any person's ability to analyze the environment in which a particular corporation exists. However, investors might wish to supplement it with methods from other disciplines (such as Benjamin Graham, Mary Buffett, Marty Whitman, etc.).
