Great photography and patterns but little or no instruction included. Fine for an advanced student of lace making, wouldn't work for the beginner.

If you're a brand new lace maker, this should be a fairly good set of patterns. This is, however, a WORKBOOK, not a book: it is not bound in any way; it is only 9 loose legal-size pages of pictures and patterns, with a few pieces of cardstock on which to make your prickings. There are 18 patterns ranging from narrow and simple to a bit more complex. There are absolutely no instructions included, so a companion book of how to make lace would be a must. This is probably not a good investment for the more experienced lace maker, only a fair set of patterns for the price, and one could most likely do better to find patterns with stitches and instructions in a fully-bound book.

Garfield keeps it funny...and weird.......2006-04-12
I have been a long time Garfield fan. While sometimes the strip seems to fall a little short, by and large it stays consistently funny. What I especially have liked about Garfield in recent years is that Jim Davis seems to have really cultivated his taste for the bizarre, so recent Garfield strips have often had a Far Sidian quality to them. This can especially be seen in the recent books, including this one.

I have been a fan of John Waters for years. I read Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters while sitting at a coffee bar near Bloomingdale's in NYC. I was surrounded by "the ladies who lunch." The book made me snicker, chuckle, guffaw, and produce a series of embarrassing noises produced when you try to suppress hysterical laughter in an inappropriate place. The embarrassing sounds made me laugh even more, and the looks of disgust from disapproving shoppers ultimately sent Diet Pepsi through my nose.
I could not offer a finer tribute to anything produced by the mind of John Waters. God bless you, John.

I just finished reading Crackpot last week, and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. I'm not an avid reader, so being able to get through any book is usually impossible for me, no matter what the length. Not only was the book nice and short, but John Waters really does know how to keep your attention. His writings are a great compliment to his films and I can't wait to read Shock Value! I love you, John!

Not a Serious Bone in His Body.......2004-05-20
First, let me say that this book should have more universal appeal than do his movies. We all know that his movies are just too gross for some people to stomach, but there's nothing here that any adult reader should find offensive. If you enjoy homorous writing, a la Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Joe Queenan, David Sedaris, etc., you should find this little volume right up your alley.
Waters displays an acerbic, eccentric, but highly insightful comic sensibility. There are fifteen short pieces here, which first appeared in various magazines during the mid '80s, primarily NATIONAL LAMPOON (When it was still funny) and AMERICAN FILM.
The book opens with a bang, in one of the funniest pieces, "John Waters tour of L.A." Needless to say, this is not the L.A Chamber of Commerce "official guide." He takes us to some of the seamier sights, including the spot on Hollywood Boulevard where you can catch "the legless, one-armed white guy who break-dances on the street for horrified families as they stroll up the Walk of Fame." He also offers some timely,timeless advice for when you're driving around L.A: "Never look at pedestrians; they're the sad faces of L.A., the ones who had their licenses revoked for driving while impaired."
There really aren't too many weak entries in the collection. He does go a bit over the top in his rhapsodizing of Pia Zadora, perhaps, in an article devoted to that queen of glitz, but one comes to expect "over the top" from Waters. Who would want it any other way? He's also very much the exaggerator when it comes to his likes, "Puff Piece (100 Things I Love)and his dislikes: "Hatchet Piece (100 Things I Hate)." Amongst the things he most admires are Supermarket Tabloids: "Then I gazed at the great LAS VEGAS SUN wire-photo of a giant ostrich, escaped from a zoo chasing a totally bewildered middle-aged woman down the street. Every time I see her horrified expression, the creative juices start to flow." Not content with this passing mention, he writes an entire article entitled WHY I LOVE THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER as a paean to that fine bastion of journalistic integrity.
Some of Waters' images do convey a bit more of the "so banal it's hysterical" quality of his movies, as when he conjures up "a fancy Santa," in a piece called WHY I LOVE CHRISTMAS.
"Why hasn't Bloomingdales or Tiffany's tried a fancy Santa? Deathly pale, this never-too-thin-or-too-rich Kris Kringle, dressed in head-to-toe unstructured, oversize Armani, could pose on a throne, bored and elegant, and every so often deign to let a rich little brat sit NEAR his lap before dismissing his wishes with a condescending 'Oh darling, you dont REALLY want that, do you?" I mean, really, wouldn't you just love to have John Waters' private phone number and be able to shoot the breeze with him about popular culture? No!! you say? Well then this book's not for you. However, if you enjoy mordant, biting wit, and a breezy, conversational style of writing, this book is definitely for you. It was sent me by a friend. I'm going to be sending a few copies out to other friends now. Who knows, maybe we could start a John Waters cult?

Playing With The Prince Of Puke.......2001-06-06
This is the book that piqued my intrest in John Waters over ten years ago before I could even be called a teenager.
For a man with such a reputation for being "filthy, perverse, trashy, etc., etc., etc.", this book ggives the reader a delightful gllimpse into his bouyant and often child like mind. Whether raving over meeting with Pia Zadora, listing the events of a truly hellish day, or giving a guided tour of Los Angeles as only he can, he guides the reader along in a cheerful skip, full of bounce and frolick.
Even for one who's unfamiliar with his films, this book is a light, quick read sure to entertain and provide laughs, crating a vivid and lovable image of the man known to so many as "The Prince Of Puke"

This collection of essays is one of the most compulsively readable, and re-readable, books I have ever owned. I was drawn to it, as you might expect, by my enjoyment of Waters' camp classics. But to be honest, I enjoy Waters the essayist at least as much, if not more, than Waters the filmmaker. Waters' films, and particularly Pecker, Serial Mom, and Hairspray, set the scene for the miscellany of obsessions which animate this book. Crackpot offers a comforting way to understand Waters' recent turn to a more conventional cinematic venue: these films are *also* celebrations of his passionate likes (and dislikes).
Waters writes a witty and acerbic prose, which conveys genuine passion for his obsessions, obsessions which include trials, the National Enquirer, Woody Allen's Interiors, dangerous candy, menthol cigarettes, and Christmas. His preferred methods seem to be the catalogue and the reminiscence: Waters' list of 101 things he hates, and 101 things he loves, are obsessive ruminations on the everyday, and Waters' methodical survey of his everyday touches gives new meaning to the sublime *and* the ridiculous. Most memorable to me, perhaps, is his LA Tour, a pre-OJ intinerary of murder, mayhem, and showbiz, and his loving tribute to the Enquirer. But his celebration of William Castle, or shame-faced coming out as a fan of avant garde, his ritualistic account of Christmas and his loving descriptions of his interests, home, and personal history all make for a case study of obsession that feels both candid and arch, in Waters' inimitable, and paradoxical way. If you read it once, you're going to read it again.

This is absolutely the funniest book that ,Baltimore Bad Boy, John Waters has ever wrote! This book made me laugh out loud several times to the point that I'm sure my significant other may have harbored thoughts about having me committed.

Although, I felt as though I was reading a monologue rather than a story, I was able to finish the whole book in a little less than an hour (because it was THAT good).
I just wish they would've ended up together (like together together, not just "together")..

Very thin, more like a skit script.......2006-08-19
Maybe as a homage to the fact Zweibel wrote skits for Gilda Radner when they both worked on "Saturday Night Live," this whole book is written like a series of skits, some funny, some poignant, just the dialogue without stage direction, details, exposition or anything. So you have to fill in all the rest yourself and imagine you're watching two people on a stage. You learn a little about their relationship, but not much. You have many blanks to fill in.
I wouldn't mind seeing this as a play, but as a book, it was kind of hollow.

In 1975 a writer Alan Zweibel and a comedienne named Gilda Radner meet while working at Saturday Night Live. In this poignant yet very funny book, the author pays homage to a woman he worked with for over 14 years and with whom he had sort of a love story.
Using recreated dialogues between Gilda and himself, Mr. Zweibel recounts their first meeting on the set of Saturday Night Live when Gilda asks him if he will write a scene for her where she is a parakeet. From this opening story we then see their friendship forged as they work together, vacation together, get mad at one another and finally comfort one another over various events in their lives. Mr. Zweibel captures the essence of two young people in crazy business on the brink of great success beautifully and we revel in their friendship. There are so many wonderful moments I will remember like when Gilda talks about her fame and Alan is overjoyed when he gets a credit card and gets another one to pay off the first one. The when we read from the night when John Lennon dies outside of Gilda's apartment house to asking Alan to meet her new love, Gene Wilder. And as we are laughing all too soon our joy turns to sorrow as Gilda is diagnosed with ovarian cancer ending her life too shortly at 39.
This is a wonderful love story about two people who meet and fall in love even if isn't the same kind of conventional love story you might have expected.
Read this book - you'll laugh, you'll cry and end the book
Wishing we still had this talented woman still among us and especially that our sort of love story with Gilda went on forever.

This is one of the best chess books I've seen. Winning strategies and ideas are presented in the context of real grandmaster games, and are explained move by move. You can read this book reasonably well even if you don't have a chess board at hand (although of course that helps a lot).
Nice games collections...........2006-08-04
This is book #4 of Seirawan's great 'PLay Winning Chess' series. This book is loaded with some great games which are all nicely annotated by the 'Yaz.' This work can be enjoyed by all though but it really fits in nicely since those who have read books #1,2,& 3 can truely see if they have absorbed the info in Yaz's prior works.
My favorite book by Yasser Seirawan.......2006-07-16
When it comes to books that cover BRILLIANT GAMES(usually short games), OPENING TRAPS and sacrifices, then I can spend all day going over them!!! Not all the games in "Winning Chess Brilliancies" are short, or involve opening traps. They often are deeper ideas where some deep idea that is well thought out is used. I like the selection of games here!

This is, without a doubt, my favorite chess book. Seirawan got me hooked on chess in 1997 with his commentating on the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue match over the internet. He made the games seem as exciting a football game (if you like football), and he does the same thing with the games in this book. This book is literally falling apart from me reading it so much.
The book really helped me to see how all the different elements of a game (tactics, strategy, space, etc.) fit together as a whole. He almost always manages to explain why another logical move wasn't played in a position, which is extremely helpful from a learning point of view. Every move is explained tactically, strategically, and often historically.
This is a fantastic book that, I believe, anyone who is interested in chess will thoroughly enjoy.
Great book for a wide range of readers.......2003-10-02
In this enthralling book, Seirwan describes 12 recent games, all between GrandMasters. Normally, I would not recommend a modern master's game collection to beginners. The moves are just too counter-intuitive to be instructive. However, Seirawan does an incredibly brilliant job of explaining, in words, the ideas behind the openings, the strategies in the middlegames, and the traps and tactics throughout.
The biggest oversight of this book is the absence of a listing of the games. (The table of contents is useless, although the extensive index may have some value.) So here are the games. You could print this out and paste it over the table of contents:

That book is for more advanced players, over 1600 USCF I think. Of course, Game 11 is deeply annotated in Seirawan's Five Crowns match book.)
In the postscript, Seirawan mentions that he'd actually annotated 6 more games but had no room for them. That's very disappointing, as this style of explanation mixed with annotation is rare and valuable. The move-by-move analysis is at a level about mid-way (maybe 1350 USCF) between Chernev's Logical Chess and Nunn's Understanding Chess. But if you have already passed the 1400 USCF level (and do not own the Mammoth games collection) add this to your library. The sometimes deep variations, including analysis from named grandmasters, would satisfy a much stronger player. And a weaker player, down to about 1200, would enjoy reading the text of this book if he ignored all the variations.
All in all, easily one of the top 10 chess books in print. Thank goodness it's back in print!

We are undergoing enormous change and at a pace that seems to be getting faster all the time. This book is an invaluable tool for all of us if we know how to use it properly. He is pointing us in the right direction - now it is up to us to go and do something with the advice he has provided. I loved this book and would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a whole new life.

What I love is when a book isn't just conceptual; it's practical. A Whole New Mind fits that bill nicely.
Dan Pink does a great job of not only laying out the essential principles to a well-rounded, complete way to bring your best to work, but he also gives excellent examples and resources to learn from and develop your capabilities.
Well researched, a great read, entertaining, and immensely useful. I highly recommend it.
Thought Provoking.......2007-08-14
What a fascinating take on the age of "Abundance, Asia and Automation." Pink's reflection on what these three realities mean to today's young people and what their future may be has really changed my outlook on my children's future. Among the most important and affirming things that Pink says is that we need "an artist in every room." Amen to that!
