Book Description
By 1942, there were more than 3,000 roller rinks in America, and more than 10 million people skating. That era is captured in this glorious graphic portrait of the country's Golden Age of roller skating (1939-1959), which also illuminates America's rapidly changing society from the end of the Depression through the wartime '40s to the '50s. This provocative look at a pop-culture phenomenon is lavishly illustrated with full-color photographs of skate rink memorabilia, including promotional stickers, postcards, advertisements, programs, and matchbooks.

Eight wheels and no brakes........2004-04-07
A tip of the hat to Lou Brooks for making this book such a delight to look at! The subject matter is pretty mundane and in the hands of many other book designers 'Skate Crazy' would just look bland but Mr Brooks knows his stuff. He knows how to select the right photos, handle color panels, overlap graphic images, choose a relevant typeface for headings and all the other little design elements that make each page sparkle and this book has 144 of them in a neat square format.
Although much of the material is similar Brooks has managed to split it into sixteen chapters and write a bit about each subject but the book is essentially visual. The four hundred rink stickers are the main pictorial items and nicely the index in the back is a geographical listing of past rinks across America. Strangely, despite a thorough coverage there are no close-up photos of skates, a page or two from a manufacturer's sales brochure would have been helpful I think.
'Skate Crazy' is a wonderful bit of nostalgia and if you rolled (or danced) around one of the three thousand rinks across the Nation in the Forties or Fifties you'll really enjoy looking at this book. Just super!

Lou Brooks Is On A Roll!.......2003-12-15
Lou Brooks is one of America's foremost designer-illustrators and his work has appeared in nearly every publication in America at one time or another. SKATE CRAZY doesn't contain many of Lou's masterful illustrations, but it does have his wacky, inventive mark on every page. Illustrators and designers across the globe are going to be drooling over Lou's delectable choices. Beautiful old advertisements, postcards, signs and stickers abound in this book--lovingly restored in many cases by Lou's wife, Clare (also a first-class artist).
But it's not only Lou's colleagues who are lucky to have Lou's jam-packed gem available. His fun, informative writing will delight anyone on your gift list. Buy a copy for creaky old grannie--she probably spent time in her youth on roller skates, mesmerized by the drone of the Hammond organ. Get a copy for the couch potato of your choice--it's time to bring back those halcyon days and hit the rinks again. Roll off those extra rolls! Send a copy to your kid at college--a great way to discover a nearly-forgotten, but once very important American pastime.
This is one hell of a buy, as well. It is crammed to the gills with photos and graphics and will inform and delight everyone who is lucky enough to get a copy.
If I could, I'd give this one 10 stars! Congratulations, Louie!
Great trip down memory lane!.......2003-12-05
This book is a great compilation of skating memorabilia from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. The book is full of photos, ad illustrations, and postcards, but the best part is the stickers from individual rinks - there are over 400 of them! The restored graphics are amazing, and the vintage style will make anyone nostalgic for this era of skating. Anyone interested in art or graphics should take a look at the way Brooks updates the stickers, because he truly has done a fantastic job.
A terrific gift - not just for roller skaters.......2003-11-30
Although this book makes a perfect gift for someone who loves to skate, it's just as good for art students, pop culture buffs, and lovers of quirky, crazy stuff. The infinite variety of roller-skate images is dazzling. "Skate Crazy" belongs on the shelf of every graphic designer. Plus, it's a lot of fun! Some of the old roller-rink photos made me laugh out loud, and the wild assortment of vintage stickers are a joy to look at. I've only been roller skating twice, but I loved this book!

A thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced superhero sory.......2007-09-21
The conclusion to the "Wolverine: Enemy Of The State" epic is one of the most thoroughly enjoyable, fast-paced, no-holds barred superhero stories I've read in quite a while. Too often nowadays these big story arcs seem to wrap up in a hurry and have a weak ending -- such is NOT the case here: Mark Millar built up the tension, sustained the action and kept the pace just right, from beginning to end. Job well done. Here, Wolverine breaks free of the mind control that Hydra trapped him with, and is thus set loose to slice and dice to his heart's desire. Plenty of zombie ninja bite the dust, and Logan once again reasserts his butt-kicking bona fides. If you're looking for a good, simple, slam-bang superhero story, this is a darn good choice! (ReadThatAgain)
Almost as good as the 1st part.......2007-07-04
Very good story, fun to see how the 2nd half ends but had one or 2 spots of what is going on?!?!? Some of the enemy's history and abilities would have been nice to know before the story is too far along. The Gorgon is a bit over the top with his abilities but excellent read none-the-less.
New & Old School Wolverine fans alike will love this storyline.
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! .......2007-01-22
This issue has it all! You see Wolverine as every die-hard fan desires! Epic battles, chaotic conflicts, and devastation all over do not take away from the individual struggles and dilemas of Wolverine, Nick Fury, and Elektra vs. The Hand. Although the Hand's "Gorgan " resembles "Morlon" (who had the Juggernaut-like power and was in search of "spider essence" to drain from Parker's life force) from the Spidey issue, he has the arrogance and the brutality just right to match up against Wolverine's. You just don't mess with Logan's head and get away with it.
Even if you read this issue before reading the 1st Enemy of the State issue, you won't feel 'left out', but you will still want to read the 1st one too!
The side story in the back of the issue was pretty cool as well.
Best comic I ever read.......2006-12-25
It had everything you can want, Vol. 1 and 2 are must own for any comic book fan.
Amazing.......2006-06-23
And I thought volume 1 was good...
The 2nd series to Wolverine: Enemy of the State, just amazing!
5/5 - story
5/5 - art (John Romita Jr. never fails to amaze me)
5/5 - dialogue
If you are a wolverine fan you will be blown away, if you are not, you will still be blown away!

Bob and Ray's swan song.......2004-06-22
If you do not already know who Bob and Ray were, I would be hard-put to sum them up briefly. They were a brilliant comedy team who came of age in the golden age of radio and whose sketches endlessly satirized radio braodcasting itself. They created a large cast of comic characters, stretching their pliable voices a million different ways. Their humor was subtle and refined - they were two of the greatest deadpan comics of all time.
Bob and Ray's main medium was radio - they were shy men who did not generally work well on stage or TV. But they did do two stage shows, one of which was "A Night of Two Stars" from the 1980's (the twilight of their career). I recommend this recording only to those who already know and love Bob and Ray. It is not a good introduction to Bob and Ray's work as a whole; some of the sketches are not very well chosen, in my opinion. But die-hard Bob and Ray devotees will love this. Carnegie Hall is packed with Bob and Ray fans - people who grew up on this wonderful duo - and the atmosphere is infectious. Bob and Ray bring out some of their classic characters, and the audience cheers them on as if they were old friends. What a wonderful way to end their remarkably long career (Bob and Ray did comedy together from 1946 untill Ray's death in 1990). What a wonderful farewell to these remarkable gentlemen of comedy. And best of all, we get the wonderful Al Hirschfeld caricature on the cover! Also be sure to get CLASSIC BOB AND RAY, BOB AND RAY: THE LOST EPISODES, (both of which show B & R in their prime) and the award-winning BEST OF BOB AND RAY (from their public radio show in the 1980's).

Book Description
Far from the orbit of Planet Hollywood, the new cinema of Hong Kong beckons.
Gone are the flying pigtails and contrived fist-thuds of your father's favorite chopsockies. These are punch-straight entertainers, movies juddering with the excitement that put the "motion" in motion pictures. Dodge a thousand bullets as you contemplate the heroic gangster-knights of Master Director John Woo. Watch international superstar Jackie Chan perform action-comedy on the edge of peril. Wrap your imagination in the fantasy of director Tsui Hark, who proffers comely ghosts floating on silk, otherworldly romance, and no-joke witches and demons. And there's much more! Fighting femme flicks featuring fatales hiking up their designer dresses and bouncing spike heels off the bad guy's forehead. Stylish tragedies rivaling the best of Hollywood noir. Brain-boiling monster weirdies to delight the grindhouse faithful. Subtitles that mangle the English language into fabulous new mutations.
Customer Reviews:
Buy the book - No Need To See The Movies1.......2003-06-01
I just dont get the appeal of this book, I'm sorry. For the most part, all it contains is a bunch of detailed plot information (yes Virginia, including key plot twists and endings) and very little information as to if the movies were any good! Yes, he has some special lists ("movies that rip"), but just not enough. I wanted this book as a reference to all of the HK movies out there, so I could see what was good before plunking down my cash on them - after reading about a few movies, I felt I no longer needed to buy them because I had already seen them. There are much better options.
A good enthusiastic intro to Hong Kong movies!.......2001-03-14
This is an excellent book for someone just getting into HK movies- it's populist and unpretentious, but it doesn't just dismiss the movies as 'fun trash.' It covers most of the classics, like Peking Opera Blues, The Bride with White Hair, Chungking Express, etc. and includes capsule reviews of slightly more obscure movies. There's also a good glossary explaining the durian (among other things) and compilations of choice bad subtitles. My main qualm about it is that it more or less neglects HK comedies- the authors even warn non-Cantonese speakers not to see them, because they won't understand 'em. This is NOT TRUE. But buy the book anyway and seek information about HK comedies elsewhere.^^
A look at the cult side of HK films.......2001-01-26
This book is only helpful for those with little knowledge of Hong Kong films. It's more playful than artistic, yet there are some helpful film reviews included. Some of the information is outdated: Web sites, where to buy HK films, etc..., but if your new to HK films and are interested in the pop culture gems that come out of Hong Kong, then check this book out. For those interested in a more in-depth look at Hong Kong films, I recommend City on Fire, by Lisa Stokes and Micheal Hoover.
a fun introduction of Hong Kong cinema.......2000-08-22
Memo to the reader from Denver: did you read the same book I did? Yeah, I'll admit that I wish the authors hadn't gone into quite so much detail about the plots, but how can you say they didn't review any of the films? The authors' enthusiasm for this exhilarating subsection of filmdom permeates every sentence herein; everything they write is filtered through their opinions, which are mostly positive, because, as they explain in the intro, they put the spotlight on the films they loved the most. With the exception of the informative sidebars, there's nothing BUT reviews here.
I love this book. It's not meant to be an HK film encyclopedia, just a feet-wetting introduction to an unjustly overlooked body of work. As that, it's nearly perfect.
Useless guide.......2000-03-21
This has got to be the most useless movie guide on the planet. Basically, all it is a bunch of plot synopses of HK movies. They are not reviews, just summaries of all the plots, BEGINNING TO END. Half of the them don't even tell you if they are good or not! What on earth could possibly be the use for this? If I haven't seen the movie, I don't want to know EVERY SINGLE THING that happens in it before I see it. And if I have seen it, just reading the plot over is pretty useless too. Basically, the authors watched a ton of HK movies and decided that they should get paid for it, so they whipped up a book as fast as they could, without any consideration for how useful it might be, and put it on the market. Make them earn their dough like everyone else. Don't buy this book.

Quicker and Easier? Not sure, but about the same as "Quick and Easy Crossword Puzzles".......2006-05-03
Sections of this review is almost verbatim of my review of "Quick and Easy Crossword Puzzles" by Will Shortz since the books are so similar. I did not find these puzzles significantly easier than the other version but rather about the same with respect to difficulty. This collection is fun and enjoyable for the novice or casual crossword-puzzler because of the accomplishment by completing 3/4 to 9/10 of each puzzle, with a few being slightly more difficult than most in the collection.
"First off, I will say that I casually do crosswords. I do the New York Times most Mondays and some Tuesdays as they easier than their mid- to late-week counterparts. The New York Times crossword puzzles get increasingly more difficult each day starting on Monday. I am not a super solver, but enjoy working through these puzzles and ones from other newspapers when able.
"This collection has crosswords that were originally printed on both Mondays and Tuesdays of the New York Times. The puzzles were just challenging enough for my skill level and knowledge level, but easy enough that I could make considerable progress on the puzzles. I found this book a great way to pass some time while on breaks at work or while watching reruns on television. There are 130 puzzles in this collection so needless to say this book can keep you busy for quite some time. I recommend this book for people who enjoy the thrill of solving crossword puzzles while still being challenged some. These puzzles are not difficult, but they are not a piece of cake, either. Hard-core solvers will probably not find much enjoyment in these puzzles."
Reference: J.Stoner, Amazon.com review of "Quick and Easy Crossword Puzzles" by Will Shortz, posted on January 1, 2006.
By now I think it is time for me to start looking for a book like "Moderately-Paced and Average-Challenge Crossword Puzzles."

A Combination of Motivational and Practical Advice.......2007-08-13
Much of the stress we experience comes not from the workplace but from our reactions to our workplace. Most of Carlson's little book focuses on how we need to change our attitudes in order to minimize stress. For instance, work should be seen as something that we get to do rather than something that we have to do. Enjoy life now--don't wait for retirement!
Problems should be seen as speed bumps to negotiate gracefully, not barriers to be resented. One should recognize that life is full of hassles, and that these should be handled in stride. One should lay off the ego, because constant comparison with others will only raise one's stress. Workplace meetings, instead of being stewed at as unnecessary or boring, should be seen as challenges to learn something new.
Carlson also gives some practical pointers for minimizing work-related stress. For instance, if we feel hurried in the morning, we should get up earlier to give us more time to get ready for work. Long commutes to work, instead of being hated as a waste of time, should be profitably spent listening to books on tape. To avoid the stress caused by constant phone calls, we should have a "no phone" time when we don't answer the phone. Voice mail should be used more often. To dissipate general stress, we should spend ten minutes each day doing absolutely nothing. And, since vacation trips themselves can be stressful, we should spend more of our vacations puttering around at home or visiting local events and places.
Simple Advice.......2007-05-03
Some of the "advice" is a good, although it is presented in a very simplistic way. I guess the author wanted all audiences to understand the meaning.
Some of the advice is redundant, other is good.
I purchased this for myself to if I can learn how to reduce some of the stress at work, but now we are using it in the office.
I have to say that the chapters that really pertain to you get you a bit upset. (truth hurts I guess). I found that applies to more people than just me when we started reading in the office. :-)
If you are looking for a brake-through book this is not it. If you are looking for some simple self-improvement advice as it pertains to the work environment, you may find some guidance in here. Don't read too much or expect too much from this book. Although it is somewhat helpful if you accept it for what it is.
Too Focused on an Office Enviroment.......2007-04-08
I've enjoyed the other Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Books and thought this book would be helpful in helping me to reduce some of my stress at work. I find that almost all of the suggestions assume an office type of atmosphere and aren't really well suited to my work enviroment - a high paced retail enviroment. Making use of break times is nice if you get breaks, i.e. I just found the book sort of narrowly targeted to a certain type of worker.
Great Gift for Employees & Co-Workers.......2007-01-15
I gave this book for Christmas to give to my fellow supervisors at work. Since we are having issues at work (What company is NOT), the gift was well timed and was the perfect size for timely reading. I struggle to find gifts for my employees as well so this is what they are getting for Christmas this year!
Not very deep, nor very helpful.......2006-11-24
This book would have worked much better as a wall poster or forwarded email: "150 Ways to Lighten Up at Work" or something like that. It's like a really, really dumbed-down, touchy-feely version of Baltasar Gracian's "The Art of Worldy Wisdom," and just made me realize I should re-read that book instead. (No offense meant to Gracian!)
Each chapter is skimmable in 30 seconds or less, and far too many chapters offer mediocre advice that makes you question whether the author has worked in a typical modern office in the past twenty years, instead of making you feel like you just received a fresh perspective on an old problem.
If the positive reviews for this book have left you thinking maybe it's worth a read, I strongly recommend you browse through it at a bookstore first. It's so lightly written that most people can scan it in 7-10 minutes at a store and save $12.
Books like these are what make me distrust self-help gurus and think that they're all con artists.
