The book was in great price, and it arrived in great condition. The best thing was, however, the promptness of the delivery!! Thank you very much.

            5 out of 5 stars a little bit of perspective...and a lot of fun.......2005-03-07

The commentary provided by the author on each of the Sunday cominc cartoon included in the collection in itself is worth the book. Each cartoon is presented twice, though. The left panel is similar to the sketches and the right hand presents the same cartoon in color. Each of the two pages provide a narrative related to the specific cartoon - explaining the artistic characteristics and inspiration for the cartoon....All in all, an excellent addition to any Calvin fan (and which intelligent reader isnt!)

4 out of 5 stars Great Look Behind the Scenes.......2004-12-25

For the eleven years that it ran (1985-1995), Waterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip was one of the greatest ever. His genius is reflected in a combination of brilliant images, imaginative story lines, unpredictable situations, and just the fun, love, and silliness of a little boy and his stuffed tiger. I have a few of the large format books, and I get a bit tired by Watterson's gassy forewords, in which he never fails to yak on and on about the cruel cartoon industry with its shrinking sizes, loss of artistic greatness, and insistence on merchandising every successful strip. Whatever. He does it again in this book, so you'll have to skip past that. The book doubled as the exhibit catalog for a showing of Watterson's works at Ohio State a few years ago. The interesting pages are dozens of Sunday strips with his personal comments under most of them. They appear in both the original draft and the final colored form (though personally, I didn't see much value added in running the same strip twice --in black-and-white and then in color). But it is fun to page through and laugh again at some of the most creative, clever, humorous, and well-drawn strips ever.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful looks at classic sunday strips.......2004-05-13

Calvin & Hobbes was much more than a really good newspaper comic strip.

Created by Bill Watterson, Calvin & Hobbes will be hailed among the greatest ever created, right alongside Peanuts and Krazy Kat for its creativity, scope of influence and the enjoyment it offered the reader. It was a strip capable of being all things gleeful and all things sad, all things goofy and all things serious.

Bill Watterson's genius cannot be overstated. He was a master of the comic form. He somehow managed to be funny, clever, touching, insightful, warm, cynical, uplifting, devious, nostalgic, and mischievous, all in the space of a little three- or four-panel comic strip.

And his Sunday strips? A feast. His use of space and color, especially in the strip's later years, was masterful. He knew how to work a page like no other.

In this collection, some of the best Sunday strips are collected in glorious color. Each is amended with footnotes and annotations by the creator himself, along with early pre-newspaper versions of the strips. While many of these can be found elsewhere, this collection is a nice look back at some favorites, made even better by the insight and observations of the man who drew them. Even those intimately familiar with these cartoons will learn something new about the craft of comic creation through his annotations.

Each comic strip is a story - and for longtime Calvin & Hobbes readers, a memory. That final strip, with its clean slate of white snow into which Calvin and Hobbes disappear, talking of discovery and exploring ... just fantastic.

If you're a fan of Watterson's work and Calvin & Hobbes, you owe it to yourself to pick this up.

                Book Description

"Not Tonight, Honey Wait Til I'm a Size 6" is the book people are talking about. Syndicated Gannett News Services columnist Susan Reinhardt takes every topic on men's and women's minds and blows them wide open with a never-before-seen candor. The humor is explosive. Topics range from bodies that have gone to pot, to grandmothers taking up smoking at age 80 and hiding lit cigarettes in bras and aprons. Once, the author had to "marry" her best friend when the minister (also the bride's yard man) blew a gasket in his colostomy bag.

Reinhardt's stories are often compared to that of a female David Sedaris or a married and middle-aged Bridget Jones. She is Erma Bombeck if Erma had Chef Emeril kicking it up a notch! People say they've never read funnier, but the poignant stories she tells pull a few tears.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Title is The Best Part of this Book.......2007-08-09

Maybe I've just become more accustomed to Laurie Notaro's snarky wit and humor, but I found this book incredibly boring and not very funny. Even though the majority of the essays are focused around motherhood (and I'm not a mother), the writing was soft and a little too sweet. My tastes tend towards witty and sarcastic, and I didn't find that in this book, though I expected to based on its title. Definitely too cutesy for my tastes.

3 out of 5 stars Amusing, but far from hilarious.......2007-06-13

As a hardcore fan of female humor writers, I eagerly anticipated cackling with abandon over this book. Alas, it's really not that funny. Amusing, yes. Hilarious, no. I was frankly disappointed. If you want to read something that will have you guffawing out loud, have strangers stare at you in public while you snicker audibly, or keep your husband awake at night because you won't shut up laughing at the book, try Laurie Notaro or Jen Lancaster. I practically hee-hawed myself silly over Lancaster's "Bitter is the New Black" and Notaro's "Autobiography of a Fat Bride."

4 out of 5 stars Not purely humor..........2007-06-12

This is a good book, but I was thrown off by people's comparisons between this book and books by Laurie Notaro and Jen Lancaster. While the writing style is similar to the previous two authors, Reinhardt tends toward more serious material. She writes of a miscarriage and flashes back to her childhood. In this sense I found it comparable to "The Ya-Ya Sisterhood". One other thing to be aware of, is there is some foul language, and more sexuality than expected. If any of that makes you uncomfortable, you may want to avoid this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Moms.......2007-04-08

I thought the writing was great and hilarious, but not being (or wanting to be) a mother made some of the material boring because I couldn't relate. I would definitely recommend the book to anyone, only with the caveat that much of it is focused around motherhood.

5 out of 5 stars Susan is like your best gal pal--only funnier.......2007-04-06

This book is hilarious! I met Susan at a booksigning in Cincinnati, and she is just as fun in person as she is in the book. Trust me, you won't be able to put this one down! Between the two-fannied woman and the adventures at the Redneck Riviera, I don't know when I laughed harder! Only Ebenezer Scrooge or Cinderella's stepmother could hate this book.

5 out of 5 stars Cool book from a cool guy.......2003-10-16

I grew up in awe of Paul Roen. He was my best friend's big brother. He wrote for fan magazines and knew more anout movies than anyone else. When I saw that he had written abook, I had to buy it. Even if you didn't know Paul before you read the book, you will after you have read it. There is a reason that Steven King quoted Paul. Sharp wit, sharper insight. It's great to see true talent. It's even more humorous to read him. Buy this book but never lend it out. You will never get it back.

5 out of 5 stars Highly personal but insightful looks at Camp and Cult Films.......2001-07-04

I was checking this book out of the Duluth Public Library when the guy behind the counter thanked me because he was the author. You have to admit, this is not a usual experience, which works out fine because this is not a usual book. Paul Roen's Introduction on "Camp, Cult and Cinema" provides a very useful look at the meaning of gay camp within the context of specific genres. So that what is gay camp in melodrama is not the same as when you are looking at an action film or western. "High Camp" professes to be a "handy guide to cinematic perversity and the very best in movie bad taste." Roen reviews several hundred films in the most personal terms, telling us not only what he did or did not like but also who and sometimes even how. This is conversational criticism, so do not thumb through these pages looking for academic pretentiousness. Here you will find the films of Garbo, Dietrich, Crawford, Davis and Garland, with Steve Reeves, Guy Madison and James Dean thrown in for good measure, with numerous photos of the various stars. I am currently working my way through the Bette Davis oeuvre and I have to admit Roen gave me some new insights into many of her films. But this is a book that reviews "Queen of Outer Space," "Pink Flamingos" and "Glen or Glenda," which end up being much more interesting to read about than the more recognizable camp/cult classics such as "All About Eve" and "The Gang's All Here" (the one where Carmen Miranda sings "The Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat"). There is a second volume of "High Camp," but, of course, I cannot check it out until the author is behind the counter again.

5 out of 5 stars Capsules of gay-related cult and camp films........1998-10-13

Paul Roen put together these witty summaries of favorite campy and cult films with memorable commentary on their subtext. Think of it as a humorous companion to Russo's "The Celluloid Closet." I've read and reread this book many times, and it never fails to make me laugh out loud.

In the introduction the author invited readers to submit their suggestions for inclusion in a second volume. I've never found such, though I have looked. If you find any other similar works by Mr. Leyland I would appreciate it if you would drop me a line. The publisher, Leyland Publications, is apparently not online -- and this type of book is not their core business, since the other titles featured in the order ad in the back advertises "Milkin' the Bulls." I need some of that.

Well, whod a thunk it. After reading William J. Mann's magnificent 2001 tome BEHIND THE SCREEN, the story of how gay men and lesbians influenced production on both sides of the "silver screen" during Hollywood's Golden Age, I became intrigued by Mann's mention of Anderson Lawler, sort of the Anderson Cooper of his day. A part-time actor and full-time fun boy, Lawler was seen at all the right nightclubs, often glimpsed in photographs with more famous people, bringing up the rear as it were, most often as the roommate and putative boyfriend of Paramount contractee Gary Cooper, the multisexual Western and glamor star. Mann didn't get to speak to many people who had actually known "Andy" Lawler, but now it looks like he should have called Jack Lawrence, whose new memoir gives Lawler a big play. Lawrence had many run-ins with Lawler back in the day, sexual and otherwise.

He was the "master of oral sex," Lawrence reports, going so far as to have all of his teeth removed to facilitate said mastery. "He showed me a gold cigarette case given to him by some Scandinavian royalty and inscribed, "To the greatest mouth in the world.'" Lawrence and Lawler lived in the same apartment building (in alphabetical order I assume) and Andy was often spotted with other Paramount stars such as Kay Francis and Marlene Dietrich, women whose sexual preferences were often gossipped about.

Lawrence was born back in 1912, which makes him nearly 95 years old, but he's still bright as a tack and continuing to add to a list of hit songs that include "If I Didn't Care," "All or Nothing at All," "Tenderly," as well as the English words to "Beyond the Sea" by Charles Trenet. He even managed to outlive Linda McCartney, for whom he wrote "Linda" on the day she was born, and Rosemary Clooney, one of his very best ftiends, a woman whose tragic story he relates all over again in one of his very saddest chapters.

Lawrence managed to adopt one of his closest "friends" which is quite a trick if you know how to do it! His book is an inspiration to all, teaching us a) never give up, b) don't let the bastards grind you down, c) keep striving for perfection, and d) above all else, have fun while you're living this life, because at the end of the day, there's no alternative but death.

PS, he doesn't have much good to say about Sylvia, the wife of Danny Kaye. If you love her, skip chapter 27 of Jack's book!

I haven't yet had a chance to read this book so ignore the star rating I gave it ("required field," you know). The book looks like great fun.

HOWEVER, watch out on page 243 and 244: the U.S. Senator behind the "Red Menace" scare of the 1950s was NOT Eugene McCarthy but Joseph McCarthy. Eugene McCarthy was the senator who ran for the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination on a peace platform. An editor at Barricade Books should have caught this.

                5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful authobiography.......2005-02-17

I just finished reading They All Sang My Songs that was loaned to me by a friend. It is simply fantastic. Jack Lawrence's autobiography is full of funny stories, some sad too, but is a very rich, entertaining and easy to read book. His courage and honesty just blew me away. It is almost impossible to stop once you start reading. Jack's narration of his 92 years of life is really an amazing option for those who like good books. I highly recomend it for everybody, even those who do not have the habit of reading biographies.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of anecdotal stories drawn from an unusual life.......2005-01-11

Jack Lawrence was a successful song writer whose melodies and lyrics helped to launch more than a dozen top show business stars including Frank Sinatra ("All or Nothing at All"), Bobby Darin ("Beyond the Sea"), Rosemary Clooney ("Tenderly"), Dinah Shore ("Yes, My Darling Daughter"), and The Ink Spots ("If I Didn't Care"). In his autobiography, Lawrence describes his Jewish upbringing in Brooklyn, his difficult and distressing realization that he was gay, and his show business career ups and downs. Readers will also have an insider's view of the music industry's Big Band era, as well as Lawrence's personal and professional relationships with the top performers of his day. They All Sang My Songs: The Times Of My Life is a memoir laced with humor, candor, and a wealth of anecdotal stories drawn from an unusual life. Highly recommended reading, They Sang All My Songs is enhanced with many of Lawrence's lyrics and the stories behind their creation as well as the inclusion of two 16-page photo inserts.

                5 out of 5 stars A SURPRISE PLEASURE.......2004-11-28

Jack Lawrence was a name I had always known, but never really knew. I saw Ray Striklyn play Tennessee Williams at the JACK LAWRENCE THEATER. I had seen the Broadway show, I HAD A BALL written, in part by JACK LAWRENCE. I knew the words for the song TENDERLY probably better than my own name. Who wrote the song? JACK LAWRENCE. So it was then, when I saw a mention of Mr.Lawrence's autobiography THEY ALL SANG MY SONGS, I decided to take a chance and buy it. What a terrific decision! Lawrence's book is a memoir of over ninety years, and in those years and in his pages, Mr. Lawrence covers the immigration experience, World War Two, the big band era and Hollywood and Broadway, all with a delightful writing style that makes you feel as though you are sitting with him in his country home, a drink in your hand and listening as he spins his delightful tales. His anecdotes are priceless, his gossip juicy, his insight into the world of popular music enlightening and his view of the world fascinating. Added to all of the above, and possibly even more important, depending on who is reading this book, is the story of Mr.Lawrence's personal life; his coming out when the country was even more homophobic than it is now, his lovers and, finally, his pride in who and what he is. If you are looking for Proust, look elsewhere, but if you are looking to spend some delightful hours with a terrific story teller, look no further. JACK LAWRENCE is your man! After reading this charming book, he certainly is mine!

This forgotten book deserves attention. Critics have always loved it, but the unfortunate title ("Fast Company: How Six Master Gamblers Defy the Odds--And Always Win") confused the reading public. It never sold well. It is NOT a collection of get-rich-quick drivel. It's a group of incredibly poignant, expertly delivered portraits of some of the most colorful professional hustlers of the 20th Century.

At once informative, funny, and deeply moving, Fast Company is one of two favorite books on my extensive shelf of gambling titles. If you're at all curious about the subject, you must buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Traveling through U.S. gambling subcultures.......2002-09-12

Not really a travel book, like the rest of the Vintage Departures line, but an examination of another culture just the same. Bradshaw profiles six men with something in common--they are all hustlers, that is, gamblers who make a living by their wits. The range here is great, including the tennis player Bobby Riggs and backgammon great Tim Holland, as well as more "traditional" gamblers Minnesota Fats (pool), Pug Pearson and Johnny Moss (poker), and Titantic Thompson (proposition). But these were just what these men were best at--they all exceeded at almost every game they undertook, golf being an extremely common one for each. Bradshaw was a gifted writer. His style makes this book difficult to place down; the subject makes it nigh impossible.

In 1897, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, in his study of the patterns of wealth and income, observed that the distribution of wealth was predictably unbalanced. He first discovered this pattern in 19th-century England and found it to be the same for every country and time period he studied. Over the years, Pareto's observation has become known as the 80/20 principle.

Now in 1998, Richard Koch takes a fresh look at the 80/20 principle and finds that the basic imbalance observed by Pareto 100 years ago can be found in almost every aspect of modern life. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less.

                Book Description

How anyone can be more effective with less effort by learning how to identify and leverage the 80/20 principle--the well-known, unpublicized secret that 80 percent of all our results in business and in life stem from a mere 20 percent of our efforts.

The 80/20 principle is one of the great secrets of highly effective people and organizations.

Did you know, for example, that 20 percent of customers account for 80 percent of revenues? That 20 percent of our time accounts for 80 percent of the work we accomplish? The 80/20 Principle shows how we can achieve much more with much less effort, time, and resources, simply by identifying and focusing our efforts on the 20 percent that really counts. Although the 80/20 principle has long influenced today's business world, author Richard Koch reveals how the principle works and shows how we can use it in a systematic and practical way to vastly increase our effectiveness, and improve our careers and our companies.

The unspoken corollary to the 80/20 principle is that little of what we spend our time on actually counts. But by concentrating on those things that do, we can unlock the enormous potential of the magic 20 percent, and transform our effectiveness in our jobs, our careers, our businesses, and our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book top 20% of books I've ever read. .......2007-07-22

This is a great book. Totally changed how I see my business.

It seems that I have always known of the 80/20 rule, but now I can see how to really use it in my life and business.

I've only read "Part One" of the book, but already I am forever changed and so is my business.

I'm so impressed that I am planning to buy the $80 audio program from Nightingale Conant because I really want to cement these great ideas into my thinking.

To sum up the book's main point in a few words would be, Spend 80% of your life and time on the "vital few" and forget or let someone else deal with the unimportant bulk or junk.

I know that that is really an over simplification. And is what I have always heard about the 80/20 rule, but the book is really an exponent to your thinking and understanding about the rule.

I know it changed how I see things and I fore see it having a good impact on my life and business.

The book has some thought worth thinking about; the writing style is not good, not easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Things are not as simple as the author thinks - an overall disappointment.......2007-03-18

My expectations were high about this book but I was quickly disappointed from the first chapter on. The author thinks that he can apply a statistical rule dealing with imbalances in mass phenomena to individual and personal situations. He cannot provide practical examples, other than referring to mass phenomena such as quality control of production, and the book turns out to be a loose philosophical treatment. The author continuously refers to identifying the 20% of causes or inputs or actions, etc., that contribute to the 80% of the output and concentrating on them while he fails to see that this type of action may further contribute to imbalances. Percentage of influence in the final outcome does not directly translate to contributed value or importance. It may be the case, for example, that 20% of the parts of a plane contribute to 80% of its flying ability but one should pay great attention to some in the 80% that do not, like, for instance, to the landing gear, which does not contribute to flying. Furthermore, does the author understand why airlines keep on adding gadgets to the planes to entertain customers while those do not contribute directly to flying performance and are mostly part of the 80% imbalance? The author seems to underestimate the concept of "external benefits" and the fact that people and businesses often do things that do not directly contribute to output but do them because important external benefits are derived from them, like for instance when doing recreational activities or charity events. Overall, the author deals with a very complicated subject and tries to apply macrocosmic type statistical rules like the 80/20 rule to situations in microcosm, like the life of an individual or the performance of a small business. He fails to do so and his claims are largely unfounded but the book stimulates thinking and 20% of it worths reading.

3 out of 5 stars 20% Of It is Good.......2007-02-26

This is a reasonably good book on the Pareto (or 80/20) Principle that 20% of the customers, products, etc. produce 80% of the value in a given enterprise.

Interestingly, this book seems to follow that pattern. One can read the first chapter or two and the last one and glean virtually everything that is worthwhile in this book. In fact, the author even makes a case for that. He tells about how a tutor he had at Oxford told him to 'never read a book from cover to cover, except for pleasure'. That advice is very good for this book.

This principle has been demonstrated to have quite a bit of validity in business. The author tries to generalize this to virtually everything without really backing it up with data or even anecdotal evidence.

It is an okay book, but it is less than I had hoped it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Time is not the enemy!.......2007-02-19

This is one of the few books I have borrowed from the library and then gone to a bookstore to buy a copy for my bookshelf. I love this book for its mind-expanding qualities - it is inspirational and provides food for the imagination. Written in an easy to read style, Richard Koch is both edifying and entertaining. I especially like what he has to say about time. In particular:

                * Time is not the enemy. If we make good use of only 20% of our time, there is no shortage of it.
                * Time gone is not time lost.
                * We should aim to collaborate with time: `Insight and value are likely to come from placing ourselves in a comfortable, relaxed and collaborative position towards time'. [p163]
                * Action drives out thought. It is because we have so much time we squander it.
                * Be eccentric and unconventional with time - you can not conform to everyone's wishes.
                * Under no circumstances give everyone a fair share of your time ...

... You may need to read the book to see how he came to some of these conclusions!

Whenever I find myself busy beyond belief it is good to be reminded that most of what I am doing is of low importance. However - when faced with one of those moments (or decisions) that are much more valuable than all the rest - it is helpful to be reminded, and encouraged, to `do something radical and stop tinkering around the edges'. I bought this book so I could refer to it whenever I feel I have lost direction or focus and need some sage advice. This book does not contain all the answers, and the theory only works to a point, but nonetheless it is a terrific 'thought jump starter' and I highly recommend it.
