    Book Description

It defies logic! At least, that's what puzzle-doers will think as they work their way through this largest-ever compendium of geometric conundrums. When you look at these images--some classic, others never-before published--you'll have a hard time believing what the captions say about their size, shape, or other geometric aspect. For example, two tables appear radically different to the naked eye--but they're actually identical in size and shape. It's all a matter of perspective and perception. Each puzzle is eye-opening.

Ever since the conclusion of Ranma 1/2, Rumiko Takahashi's many fans have been eagerly awaiting her next long, serialized project. The wait is over with the first volume of Inu-Yasha. The story begins in Feudal Japan (technically, the Warring States period of the Muromachi era) where a mythical creature named Inu-Yasha, half dog and half boy, pillages a small town in search of a magical jewel. He is stopped by the village priestess who takes the jewel with her to the afterlife. Cut to modern times where Kagome (a splitting image of the village priestess) finds herself lost in a time portal and runs into Inu-Yasha himself. Her reaction is priceless: "Is he a demon or a junior high school kid?" This is the magic of Rumiko Takahashi--she has woven an intriguing historical fantasy that is filled with horror, humor, and romance in a way that most people would not think possible. --Jim Pascoe

      Inuyasha (1997.)

      INTRODUCTION:
When I was younger, I was a big-time anime fan. Although little of the Japanese animation was being shown on American TV back then, what little I saw, I liked. It fast became apparent that the Japanese had a much better way of creating animation - one that fused seriousness and comedy perfectly, and one that would appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. And in recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime altogether. However, I had always remained curious, and in the more recent years I had heard of a series called Inuyasha that was constantly getting praised. I watched a few episodes, and it wasn't hard to see why. The series was created by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 (a series that remains VERY popular.) Although I liked the episodes I saw on TV, they started somewhere in the middle of things, and I wanted to get the story from the beginning. Since the episode DVDs were too pricey, I opted for the manga (comic/graphic novel) version (most animes are based on manga.) Read on for my review.

      STORYLINE OVERVIEW:
Inuyasha has one of those stories that's EXTREMELY tough to put into words, but I'll try my best. Bear with me here, people. Several centuries ago in Japan, there were ongoing wars, between humans and demons alike. In modern-day japan, a girl named Kagome lives on a shrine with her family, and one day one of the demons from the past pulls her down the shrine's well. The well is a linking point between the modern age and the age in the distant past, in which wars were raging constantly. She is revealed to be the reincarnation of a priestess who, several years earier, killed an evil half-demon called Inuyasha. But, through several odd twists of fate, she is forced to join forces with the resurrected Inuyasha, to recover the shards of a sacred jewel, which could be used to greatly increase the powers of and demon, good or evil, who gets their hands on them. Although reluctant to help at first, Kagome finally decides to help Inuyasha, realizing that the well is the warp point between times, she doesn't want to put her family in immediate danger. (I KNOW, that's not the best possible summary. If you want a better one, visit one of the various fansites.)

      OPINIONS:
Overall, I am very satisfied with this series - it's been a LONG time since I liked an anime and/or manga this much. Rumiko Takahashi has once again succeded beautifully, combining seriousness with comedy, and creating an excellent storyline fusing history and fantasy alike. It was great to finally get the proper introduction to the series. I urge you to get the proper introduction yourself, as well. If you just start watching/reading somewhere in the middle of the series, you may be left dazed and confused and judge the series based on an awkward first impression. DON'T make that mistake.

      CURRENT EDITION:
The edition of this manga currently available is actually a second edition - the first edition is now out of print and is no longer readily available. I'm VERY satisfied with the way the Inuyasha manga got ported to America. First and most importantly, it's uncensored. Many manga series get heavy editing when they get an American release, as do their anime counterparts. Another thing I am happy about is they "Americanized" the reading style, while at the same time staying true to the original projected vision. For those of you who don't know, the Japanese read from right to left, and sometimes mangas are ported in that fashion. Being an American, I'm used to reading from left to right, so I was glad to see that it was ported into English in a "left to right" reading style (and all of the images have been reversed to reflect the change and to stay true to the original vision.) Likewise, these graphic novels are almost two hundred pages each, and since each one costs less than ten bucks, they're a pretty good deal. Overall, it's great to see Inuyasha didn't butchered the way some series do.

      OVERALL:
Inuyasha is the best anime/manga series to come along for me in a long time. It's not hard to see why so many people call it one of their favorites. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since the manga came first and is, therefore, Takahashi's original vision. Likewise, the DVDs are kind of a rip-off pricewise. But whether you decide to do the anime, the manga, or both, you're likely to agree it's an excellent series.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Manga.......2005-05-07

"Inu-Yasha" has one of the best stories I've ever read. It starts off simply, maybe a bit generic. From there though, you get to know the characters, and you really do sympathize with them. The relationships between them are not rushed, and the romance is done very well. The story gets better in every volume, too.

Anyone who loves manga should try out Inu-Yasha. It's popular for a reason.

There is a little nudity, but it's not done in a sexual way. Still, it's not something for small children.

5 out of 5 stars A well that serves as a time machine? Pure Genius........2004-08-04

Honestly the first time I saw this anime on T.V., I was turned off by the whole crazy psychotic demon stuff. Then I decided to give this anime a chance, and after the first episode, I was hooked. The story is about a girl who falls into a well and she ends up in feudal Japan. Bizzare? Maybe at first, but after a while you'll say, wow that well gos great with the story.
So I decided to purchase the first volume of the manga, and now I will definately say, this is one of my most favorite series. The story involving and thrilling which also leaves for many unexpected events to happen where they end up fighting countless hordes of demons. All in all, this first volume of the manga will make you want to buy volume 2 of this great series.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book for kids.......2004-01-31

Violent, gruesome, nudity. Should be removed from the shelves. My 7 year old son told me he read one of these books that a friend in his second grade class brought in. I purchased a few books in the series and we reviewed one for content. I was horrified to see that it talked about murder, a person saves a bucket of human livers and has to move to another town because he has run out of victims. There were pictures of nude girls on a few of the pages. Although it says it is for Teen on the back cover- Young kids are reading these books. My nephews, who are teens, think these books are for young kids. Most teens are not interested in reading them. Which shows that these books although labeled for teens have a young child audience. I am bringing the books I purchased last night, back to the store this morning.

3 out of 5 stars Inuyasha is pretty darn good........2004-01-18

I ordered the first two of the series.
I was pleased with the fact that they were a pretty good length, but I'm still reeling over the cost!
American dollars are bad. Very bad. Am so broke *droops*.
I love the story very much however, and Inuyasha makes a most adorable villian/good-guy. (confusing isn't it?)
I have shared it with a few of my friends. (Trusted ones mind you. Sooooo expensive to replace!)
They had a lot of reactions ranging from:
*yoink* "I'll see you after Japanese" *runs off clutching book muttering 'My preciousssss'*
      To:
"Oh, they aren't very good quality drawings, are they?" *gets head bashed in by me*
      And even!:
*Opens first page* "That girl looks really mad. Who is she?"
"Oh! He's a guy??? Are you sure???"
Yes. That really happened. That particular person also mistook Sesshoumaru for a female but I can forgive her for that.
I'd love to buy the rest of the series, but I'm pretty darn sure that I can live without it until the prices go down. One day.

The cover of Ten Fun Things to Do Before You Die says that its author is "nun other than" Karol Jackowski, which gives you a hint of the humor and humility that suffuses this sister's faith. (The cover's funky design, in the style of those old Monty Python animated interludes, is a tip-off too.) "Nothing exhilarates and sends the soul soaring more than having the best time ever--so much so that face muscles ache from such hearty laughter," she writes. "May you have millions of such laughs. Time rarely gets more divine than that." Each of the titular 10 things--from "Write Something at the End of Every Day" to "Think about Nuns" to "Live Like You Have Nothing Left to Lose"--is described in a short chapter, illustrated with very funny line drawings. Even people who can't stand self-help books may enjoy this one, because its voice is so delightfully free of sententiousness and so disarmingly candid. Ten Fun Things to Do Before You Die is a book that will challenge and comfort the reader, and serve as a reminder that we were created to enjoy the world--a message that will give many readers permission to do just that. --Michael Joseph Gross

              Book Description

In a delightfully witty yet reflective manner, Jackowski offers invaluable advice about overcoming serious challenges and striving toward everlasting self-worth. Her encouragement and optimism shines through, and her helpful words are accompanied by whimsical illustrations as well as asides and sidebars. The perfect antidote to the pressures and complexities of everyday life, this deceptively simple guide to a more fulfilling existence is filled with wry humour, humanity, and the power of faith.

1 out of 5 stars More pagan claptrap.......2004-01-30

Someone's dreams are coming true when you read this, and it won't be yours. It'll be the woman who wrote this silly pagan mess in the first place. This book is not aimed at Catholics or serious protestant Christians - it is aimed at the bland, cynical post modern reader (in this case female, with a disordered fascination for witchcraft) who quickly snaps up Oprah's next book club selection. That a nun would write this is painful. That it would be proudly published is shameful.

5 out of 5 stars LET ME HEAR A HEAVENLY AMEN!.......2003-01-01

A gift from heaven? The hell with it! a real-life nun named Karol Jackowski somehow convinced Hyperion that she had a book inside her, and Holy Hypocrite! it worked. This paperback is filled with such earth-shattering advice such as "if it looks like fun and doesn't break The 10 Commandments, do it" and "write something at the end of every day." OK, Sis. I am taking your advice. My words at the end of this day: Thou Shall Not Read such a miraculous waste of ink and paper. Amen!

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2002-05-14

This is the kind of book that I want to buy 20 copies of and give to all my friends. Maybe some day I will. I read it over and over again. It's a great book. I love all of Sister's books.

5 out of 5 stars A little book packed with lots of wisdom.......2000-11-30

Sister Karol's book is one of my all time favourites and something I can return to time and time again for inspiration. It isn't a heavy, dry read in the least, something one might perhaps expect of a Catholic nun. She is fun, witty and occasionally somewhat irreverent (in the best possible way). Infact, I think I'd like to invite her to my next party...:)

2 out of 5 stars Nuns have more fun.......2000-11-25

This book is more like a "rule of life" than suggestions for specific fun things to do, like going skydiving or riding the world's biggest roller coaster. Of course, calling it a "rule of life" wouldn't be much fun, now, would it? Among all the frivolity (not that there's anything wrong with frivolity) she slips in a few ideas that could be construed as spiritual disciplines. Very clever, this nun! She might be a fun person to take to the clubs and discos, but only after her periods of silent meditation.

I really wanted to give this book at least three stars, but I had to dock it one star due to her constant references to "the Gods" or "the Gods and their Muses". Just to whom the heck is she referring? Fun is fun, but I would expect a nun to at least be a monotheist.

                Book Description

From the earliest days of public outrage over "indecent" nickelodeon shows, Americans have worried about the power of the movies. The eleven essays in this book examine nearly a century of struggle over cinematic representations of sex, crime, violence, religion, race, and ethnicity, revealing that the effort to regulate the screen has reflected deep social and cultural schisms. In addition to the editor, contributors include Daniel Czitrom, Marybeth Hamilton, Garth Jowett, Charles Lyons, Richard Maltby, Charles Musser, Alison M. Parker, Charlene Regester, Ruth Vasey, and Stephen Vaughn. Together they make it clear that censoring the movies is more than just a reflex against "indecency," however defined. Whether censorship protects the vulnerable or suppresses the creative, it is part of a broader culture war that breaks out recurrently as Americans try to come to terms with the market, the state, and the plural society in which they live.

In the back of the book, you have a guide for all skills and what their characteristics are up to lvl 20, thats worth the price right there.

This means you can guestimate damage and strategize your skill investment and get an idea of what you max out or put 1 point into as well as where skills start to level off. i.e. you can compare the differences in the Sorc's cold shields. The second one has more defense bonus than the first and third. And we all know the "retaliate" thing is useless.

And how many times have you asked the question, which merc does holy freeze? or thorns? The book lists the mercs of act 2 norm, nightmare and hell. How about this question, how much strength does a shako need? Its in the book.

Granted it is not a 1.10 guide, but, if you play a lot like my friends and I, it is great to imagine a new character setup without looking at a website and getting their warped perception of what is an uber character. PLUS, you can look at the book during gameplay, I hate minimizing the screen to look at a website, doing that slows down gameplay.

Anyway, yes, it is old, but it is very good for understanding how some of the spells work and what benefit's they have to others. Pally auras, what are they? Does the radius grow when points are added? Granted 1.10 messed with this too :(

Newbies don't need the book, only old school, but if you've been around awhile, you know some skills go up and up and up and others level off, (like mana shield), it's nice to have the book around for experimenting. It lowers the anxiety of deciding skill point allocation (the most stressful part in the game).

I liked the book, and use it a lot, even though 1.10 kinda made things outdated. Still useful. I bought a second copy, and my brother uses it constantly. So thats 2 for 2 :) Anyway, if your a d2 fan, you'll love the back of the book, its cheaper than the ink you'll waste printing from a website.

I love D2, play a lot and refer to the book, it also makes a nice bathroom reader for those serious gamers.

Think about it, this book costs less than one 290, not that I have ever bought one, its worth it.

There is a person who didn't like the book, so they put like 5 bad reviews of the same review on the website? Whats that? If you play D2, you will pick up some stuff, even outdated a little as it is. Its like 80% accurate.

BART! If you make a 1.10 guide, I'll buy it!

To begin with, I believe that static, hardcopy guides to Diablo 2 are all useless, because the game is constantly being patched and changed. Monsters are given new abilities, the characteristics of certain levels are changed, and items are introduced, changed, or deleted altogether.

Therefore, the primary failing of this guide is that it is hopelessly out of date. The character building strategies are also hopelessly newbie-material - they provide the player with a 'balanced playing experience' but will give you a character that is much, much weaker than the best configurations.

This site has all of the up-to-date information, written by veteran players, that you could ever want to know, along with a forum populated by highly experienced and skilled players to help you. There is no reason to buy a guide when you can get much, much better for free.

Grading it on the basis of a hard-copy guide (that you can have open in front of you while playing, the sole advantage it has over diabloii.net), I suppose it isn't bad, which is why it got 2 stars instead of 1. While some of the information (such as items) is out of date, most of its tables are accurate and useful references. The strategies for using certain skills are also good to know - but keep in mind that these may not be the best, most efficient strategies.

I would only consider buying this book if you are absolutely, 100% new to the game.

...Warning! This guide will be of use to those who only want a very general overview of the new Druid and Assassin character classes.... HOWEVER, the rest of the book is hopelesss outdated, seeing as it was written for the 1.07 version of D2 and the game is currently in its 1.09d patch...with promises of another ( 1.10 version ) patch sometime in June/July of 2002. This guide went in the trash when Blizzard released their 1.08 patch a mere three weeks into LoD's public release. Since then everything has changed vastly. Character skills have been altered so the tables are totally wrong. Sets and Uniques....well just about all of them have been changed, some beyond recognition. For example the unique round shield orginally a + skills necro item is now a sorcess skills item with total different mod's. As for the unique Archon staff ( an elite weapon), well it no longer exsists; instead it's name has been assigned to the unique Giant Thresher, which has totally different mod's and is used by a totally diffent kind of character! Most of the Runewords and Crafted items spells ( advertized as new for LoD ) have either been blocked or changed... about 90% of them weren't even in the guide to begin with! Just about everything is changed so completely that this guide would have to be TOTALLY rewritten ( perferably by someone who has actually played the game, not just read the fact sheets Blizzard passed down to them ). Even nearly a year later I see this guide in various stores and have to warn off people who want to get it... Don't get me wrong, LoD is a great game to try ( I play about 20-25 hrs per week on Realms ), but this guide is very outdated. Hopefully, someone will wake up at Brady and rewrite this book so it reflects the true picture of what D2LoD is now like on the Realms. Well, off to kill Diablo and his brothers... *evil chuckle* ...bye...

                  1 out of 5 stars Another dissapointment.......2001-09-13

This book (supposedly) provides info on the new features of the expansion set. The only really useful parts of it are the tables in the last part, and this does not work to those who haven't downloaded the 1.08 or 1.09 patch. There are many things in the guide that have changed after the last patch, including new items, rune words and crafted items.

If you have web access, search there for the info you need. This guide is a complete waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool for Brainstorming.......2007-08-10

Thinkertoys has proven to be an excellent resource guide and valuable addition to my library on creativity. Not only does it provide a variety of different brainstorming techniques, but it lays them out with an easy writing style. I have used this book in an applied creativity workshop taught to graduate management students and have found it to be very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Not the final approach to creativity, but useful, espesially for building confidence.......2007-08-01

My method of creativity: Take something you're not satisfied with. Start thinking what in it is unnecessary, what could be removed. Compare it to other such things and incorporate their features if necessary. Start combining the parts to all kinds of wholes that match your inner models of their ideal function. Keep on evolving, adding branches, developing, destroying. Ultimately you have arrived at something completely different.

In my opinion the only worthwhile creative practices are:

                  1. Being aware that you can be a creative person and that you have creative modes of thought that can always be accessed. Basically doing things that are weird and creative helps. Like I've been developing new writing systems for English and Finnish. There's no practical use for them really (even though they're already a lot better than the Latin alphabet). Just for the sake of being creative. You don't have to be artistic. That mostly means learning self expression and technique. The trick is to see that anything at all is really helpful in moving you towards new things. You just have to keep moving in all possible ways, use all areas of thought, and ultimately you'll arrive at something. Creativity is your friend.

                  2. Practicing knowing what your customers/target group are looking for. You have to be there earlier than they even know what they actually want. What this means in practice is just things like watching TV and being on the net and reading and following the trends. Be like they would be in 5 years. Have a sense of design that's better than their taste.

                  3. Practice things that have nothing to do with creative problem solving like dancing or whatever. Whatever you're motivated to do at the moment. Be familiar with all cultures, not only what's mainstream or popular at the moment. It all affects the way you think and generally you should be able to do and like and be confident of just about everything possible.

What this book does is make you aware that it's possible to ask questions from yourself and to work towards solutions from perspectives that seemingly have nothing to do with it. After a few pages you'll get the formula. Basically doing something like watching cartoons to solve your problems works just as well as any single thinkertoy. The key is that whatever you're using for inspiration, it cannot be too complicated. It has to be something that can be reduced to simple concepts. And the area that is in need of creativity also has to be reduced to simple concepts. So it's useful not to look at the whole thing at once, but identify some key areas and issues and work on them.

There's a practically infinite number of thinkertoys you can use. You can come up with them yourself too whenever you want to. Maybe this book will make you aware of the fact. If you already are, there's no use to refer to it really. You're already carrying a lot better and easier to customize thinkertoys inside you.

After working with creative problems for a while you'll develop a routine. It helps to keep you sane and flowing all the time. There will never be a dead end where you'll have no way of moving forward. Just abandon, restate, do something dramatic like macroevolution. But keep your ideas manageable at all times. You don't have to really memorize any creative thinking techniques. There are about a 1000 questions this book tells you to ask yourself when you need to be creative. And it's far from complete. Opening a random page when you encounter a dead end hardly gives you the best new approach. It's like dancing about architecture.

So I'd like to stress that the function of this book is to rather make you aware of your creative intuition than to provide techniques of surpassing it. There are no such techniques and you can't memorize them. This book is not the environment you'd like to be at when faced with a creative task. It's mainly useful for clearing blocks in your mind about the limits of what can be used creatively. If you know how it's done already, this book will be rather repetitive.

If you have trouble about seeing randomizing as a useful technique, read about dada. If you can't use things like sound in association to problem solving, become really interested about music. If you aren't comfortable with all areas of human experience, you can't really use them in problem solving either. Being aware that they can be used isn't enough. You have to have the intuition too.

That said, this book is really important to me too. But I just like to offer the other side. That creativity is like walking. There are no ways to reduce it to a successful formula that always works. But still, it's so essential that you really should read about it, a lot. I think if you're buying just one book from Michalko, Cracking Creativity might be better. Not entirely sure though. Just make sure you'll read and do a lot of other creative stuff as well, it really does pay off after some time.

5 out of 5 stars Very good collection of "thought toys".......2007-07-30

Thinkertoys is a wonderful collection of tools for creative thinking. I am an engineer and purchased the book to help me stimulate new ideas. The techniques in the book open up places in the brain where one would not typically look for these ideas. I found the tools inside quite useful to stroke the imagination and, many times, look at old problems in new and different ways

5 out of 5 stars Idea generator, brain teaser good resource for creative thinking in any field you are in........2007-07-21

Having read the Lateral Thinking book first few days back, I started looking for something similar, a resource that could help me in my field and even in general. If you read the reviews of Lateral Thinking, you would find comments of Michal Michalko where he recommends the book as a must read. That is where I came across his book and started exploring it over the internet.

I found this book as an excellent resource for creative thinking. The best part is the write up and the exercises use the "Power/Law of Simplicity" in a way that you would be surprised at many instances. His examples of rabbit and duck and about the staircase on page 52. They make you smile and the smile is actually a realization about the possibilities the life has in store for everyone.

This has helped me in changing my perception about many things. At least now I have more than one way to think about any situation. I firmly believe his theory of "Challenge Your Assumptions."

You might be aware of the concept of "Mind Mapping" by two British authors Tony and Bary Buzan. The mind mapping has helped me always, not just in planning my work but even my personal life. It's like you have all the things that is going on in your mind about a particular subject on just one paper. Once you have it in front of you, earlier I simply used to feel relaxed and follow my assumptions. However, now I simply explore the possibilities.

To be very brief about the book, your business, work, daily life, everything that you do, you would find yourself trying out as many possibilities as you can and you would choose from the best one.
