Empowering.......2003-06-10
Mr. Rudd...
Thank you for writing such helpful books for artists. It is a great thing you've done to improve the conditions for so many who need space to create and live with fewer restrictions.
Cheers.
Very good advice.......2003-02-27
This has been a great source of inspiration and solid, practical advice for me. I'm opening my own studio/gallery soon and found Rudd's book to be a constant source of ideas on how to renovate the cheap, but run-down space we found. Although we weren't able to purchase the space as he recommended (I wish we could) it has been a very helpful book.
It's not just the practical advice, but the encouragement to take your own work more seriously that really made this book valuable to me. When he described how more work could be done in a good studio, I knew then that I had to get my work out of the garage and into a better space. Now, after a lot of elbow grease and plenty of cheap white [local store] paint (as Rudd recommended), I'll have a space much more suited to the work I want to do, plus a gallery to show it.
A manual for serious artists.......2002-02-14
Multi-media artist Eric Rudd has written two books for
artists who feel compelled to produce not just good art, but great art that has potential for recognition on a grand scale in museums and perhaps a legacy in art history. Rudd pulls no punches in his entertaining account of his successes and failures both as an artist and developer of loft art studios from Washington, D.C. to North Adams, Massachussetts. His ideas aren't for the faint-hearted or the Sunday painter but rather for the artist with a strong belief in the greatness of the work and a willingness to take risks to create a space where this can happen. "The Art Studio/Loft Manual for Ambitious Artists and Creators" provides the practical information needed to make it happen, from how to acquire the real estate to how to renovate the space. The accounts of Rudd's achievements, particularly in his present location in North Adams, are inspiring.

Book Description
Walt & Skeezix is the first-ever collection of the classic twentieth-century newspaper strip Gasoline Alley, and Book One is the beginning of a handsome multivolume series edited and designed by comics virtuoso Chris Ware
Chris Ware has often cited Gasoline Alley as one of his favorite comic strips ever, and he has lovingly edited and designed Walt & Skeezix: Book One, the first-ever collection of the classic newspaper strip created by one of the pioneering giants of American comic strips, Frank King. Not only does this volume reprint the first two years of the strip in which King’s friendly and nostalgic imagination took shape but each book in the series features an eighty-page color introduction by Jeet Heer of Canada’s National Post. Each introduction will also feature never-before-seen archival photos and ephemera from the personal collection of King’s granddaughter. Walt & Skeezix is not just a collection of a classic comic strip—it is the story of a great American cartoonist.
Few cartoon strips have this kind of longevity and quality; Gasoline Alley has been with us since 1919 and is a gentle mirror held up to ordinary American life in the early twentieth century. It started as a mild satire on the post-WWI “craze” for cars, but it wasn’t long before it developed into a quirky family story attracting an audience of more than thirty million readers in four hundred–plus newspapers. Gasoline Alley, an affectionate portrait of modern living, is remembered for being the first strip to set itself in contemporary American history. The characters of Gasoline Alley grow up, go to war, and have grandchildren. The strip always reflects the kind, sweet pace of life.

A look into the really, truly past.......2007-08-07
Commentary and editorial aside, the heart of this book is the wonderful Gasoline Alley strips. For those who honestly can't imagine what daily life was like before automatic shift, television, modern medicine, sexual liberation--this book is like being pulled through a time warp into the 1920s and 30s.
It has a lot of the same flavor as For Better or Worse. It's infested with genuine American characters. (Fair warning: the portrayals of African Americans are deeply stereotyped--but also remarkably sympathetic in terms of human feeling.)
DO NOT read it all in one sitting. Try to limit yourself to ten strips a night. Like movie serials, comic strips that appeared in daily newspapers took months or years to fully develop a story arc. You can't rush through that--and why the heck would you want to?
Comics Junkie.......2007-07-31
This collection was a little before my time, but it is great to read about the earlier days of Gasoline Alley.
This is a Great Book.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The photographs really provide insite into the authours life and basis for the comic strips. I really enjoyed the dated chronology of the strips. It also provided me with a humorous way of conveying the social, political and economic happenings of that period in American History. Absolutely Fantastic, I can not wait to read the second book in the series.
The timeless genius of Frank King!.......2007-01-18
I had never really understood the appeal of Gasoline Alley. I sensed that it was a pleasant enough "slice of life" comic strip, well drawn and harmless. I had given it a glance now and then over the years, not even beginning to sense the iceberg that was always there, just beneath the 3 or 4 daily comic panels. This was all before I was exposed to the collected early stuff and the absolute genius of creator Frank King. Now, after having just finished the first volume of "Walt and Skeezix" which covers years 1921 and 1922 of this wonderful strip, I am simply very grateful to the Montreal publishing house, Drawn and Quarterly, for undertaking the multi-year project of collecting all the dailies from the King years.
The effect of this strip is somewhat cumulative, and Jeet Heer puts it best in his introduction when he writes "Gasoline Alley needs to be read in bulk to be appreciated." As I read along, it became increasingly clear to me what an astonishingly bright gem I was looking at. After I had read about six months into the dailies from 1921, I knew I was onto something very, very unique. The story of Walt and Skeezix unfolded exactly at the pace of real life, with all the well drawn characters growing older in real time. This infuses the strip with an immediately gripping "realism" that in turn makes the reader identify in a powerful way with the characters. The moments of subtle insight into human nature are many and so brilliantly done I found myself re-reading a single daily strip two or three times to truly savor it, finding ever-deepening levels to appreciate (if this sounds like hyperbole for a review of a comic strip, all I can say is buy this volume and I bet you will agree).
I don't want to gush and ruin your enjoyment of this work. You should come to it yourself, on your own terms. I will just say that you can truly sense the earth turning as you read these pages, and that this strip contains some of the truest, purest moments of understanding that I have experienced in any book.
One can look at this collected work as an incredible record of American life, or simply appreciate Frank King's wonderful art, and be well rewarded for all effort. Just beneath the surface, though, lies a much larger and impressive piece of art. Chris Ware, editor of the series, writes in his preface "I am convinced that after all these books are published, Gasoline Alley will stand as one of the most individual, human, and genuinely great works in the history of comics." Amen to that, brother. I will go further even than Mr. Ware: I believe that Frank King's Gasoline Alley, taken as a whole, is one of the greatest works of literature by an American.
Drawn and Quarterly Books deserves a medal of recognition for this multi-volume publishing project, and I personally regret every mean thought I have ever had about our neighbors to the north.
This work is highly recommended. -Mykal Banta
A splendid collection of vintage comic strips!.......2006-01-29
I have been a fan of the comic strip, Gasoline Alley for my entire life. This collection of daily strips from the years 1921 and 1922, tell the story of Walt, a bachelor and car fanatic, who awakes one morning to find a foundling on his door step. He decides to raise the boy and names him Skeezix.
When he isn't taking care of Skeezix, Walt and his friends are usually out in the alley, working on their cars. Back when these strips were created, the automobile was new invention that everyone was excited about and eager to experience. Cars back then, like with most new technology, had many problems and their owners needed to keep fiddling with then in order for them to work properly. The strip follows the daily lives of, Walt and his friends from the alley. The pace of the story seems slower than comic strips you find in today's newspapers. This helps you get to know the characters and I feel is reflective of what life was probably like 85 years ago.
This is a wonderful collection and includes biographical information and many photos of the cartoonist, Frank King and his family, taken from around the time these strips were drawn. This book is a treasure, buy it!

Bad seeds, belles-lettres, rule breakers, shrieking violets, bar belles--how could any collection of impudent sketches that celebrates and lampoons the American Southern belle go wrong? Most of the women on these pages are instantly recognizable. Among those whose exploits or imagination vaulted them to fame are writers Carson McCullers and Anne Rice; emancipator Harriet Tubman; actress and one-time town owner Kim Basinger; ex-Black Panther Angela Davis; '30s outlaw Bonnie Parker; and mascara maven Tammy Faye Baker. A few little-knowns and relative newcomers have elbowed their way on stage, too: Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard out of Carolina; Anna Edson Taylor, the first barrel-rider over Niagra Falls; and women's basketball star Luisa Harris-Stewart.

Don't Be Fooled By Scarlett O'Hara on the Cover.......2006-02-14
I bought this book because I loved the cover. Admittedly, I didn't do much research about it, but wish I had. This book is anything but about true Southern Belles. There are a few women in this book who might fit the real description, but even they are marred by the author's insistence on revealing all the negative and dark side of these women. Don't be fooled..this book is not about true Southern Belles. I was born, and raised partially, in the South and was taught that a true Southern Belle is a woman who embraces her feminity, is proud of her heritage, passes on traditions and always conducts herself like a lady. That definition seems to upset the author because she includes many women who are anything but Southern Belles. Just because a person was born in the South doesn't make them a Southern Belle. The author seems to think that just by virtue of being Southern born, that makes one a "Belle." Her book proves just the opposite. Then when I finished the book, I saw that the publisher is located in Berkeley, CA (surprise!) and is associated with a group called The Wild Women Association, also out of Berkeley. If you are looking for a book about true Southern Women, a.k.a, Belles, I suggest you read Ronda Rich's book, "What Southern Women Know (That Every Woman Should)" or Deborah Ford's "G.R.I.T.S. - Girls Raised in the South."
Hells Yea!.......2003-02-06
I picked this book up at the Margaret Mitchell Museum in Atlanta. Being a southern woman I found the title and the subject matter interesting. Boy am I ever glad I read this little book! It was pretty intriguing to read 2-3 page summaries about historical and current southern women who've made an impact or just made there presence known. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's a quick and enlightening read.
Fun.......2002-12-19
This is a great little find. There are some great quotes and it's just plain fun. Who ever knew that there were pirate belles or native american belles, American revolution and confederate spy belles.
In Praise of Southern Women.......2002-09-17
A glorious book - a celebration of southern women, and all that they stand for, from their notorious southern charm to their unique and equally-infamous 'darker' side. They're all here - Tallulah Bankhead, Scarlet O'Hara, Priscilla Presley, as are many lesser-known but just as 'potent' southern belles. Photos, tributes, anecdotes, photos. The entertainment quotient is high and what a history lesson!!!
Parochialism? No, just good fun.......2000-07-16
I admit it, the enchanting cover photo of Vivien Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara) compelled me to buy this book..but I was also intrigued by the sales-pitch blurb on the back cover. Inside, I was pleasantly surprised, with many of my favourite southern gals featured, including Selena, Anne Rice, Margaret Mitchell, Carson McCullers. Hell's Belles is written in exuberant tabloid style (witness the title!)and contains interesting anecdotes and fascinating accounts of Southerners, most of whom I've never heard of but leave me wanting to know more..luckily, Ballenger provides a list of references. The only thing that left me feeling a bit miffed is some blatant Women's press advertisment at the back - as if we need reminding of 'role models' and 'empowerment'and other genderist stuff to feel good about ourselves! Subtle it is not. And one question - drag queens are belles, yes? but Truman Capote?

Book Description
In this first major study of French colonial and postcolonial cinema, Dina Sherzer compiles essays by some of the foremost scholars on the subject who interrogate and analyze the realities behind the images of the nation's past and present. Through an examination of France and its colonies, multiethnic contemporary France, and cinematic discourses which have been and are being produced about France's colonial past, these authors explore how the images relay underlying assumptions and their relation to historical and political facts. A variety of subjects and viewpoints inform these studies, which cover the entire range of films on that topic.
The authors expound upon the role French and Francophone films are currently playing in reconstructing and imagining France's colonial past. Not only do the essays examine how French cinema has represented the encounter of French citizens with individuals from former colonies during the colonial era; they examine how French cinema has portrayed and has come to terms with the immigration of former colonial subjects to France. In addition, the book features another postcolonial facet by analyzing films of directors from the former colonies who give their own representation of colonialism and presentation of their culture.
This study is a major contribution to postcolonial research. Race, gender, and geography are central themes throughout this book that presents innovative material that contributes to the history of French cinema and emphasizes how cinema participates in and is a part of national culture.

Cinema, Colonialism, Postcolonialism: Perspctives from the French and Francophone Worlds.......2007-05-13
The relationship between colonial/postcolonial studies and cinema as a means of expression has been a hot topic on campuses in recent years, and this book is a good introduction to film's ability to express what sometimes gets lost in written works that have continued to go untranslated.

The Grunfeld Defense has always been a popular choice with players who aim to counterattack with the black pieces. World Champions Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov head a distinguished cast of grandmasters who swear by its solid yet dynamic nature. In this original book Jonathan Rowson delves deeply into the Grunfeld, steering the reader through the mysteries and intricacies of this complex opening. Now you too will be able to understand, play and win the Grunfeld!
Customer Reviews:
The title says it all.......2004-01-08
Jonathan Rowson provides an interesting perspective of how to handle the Grunfeld defense from the Black side providing a complete and thorough repertoire against the most fashionable lines. He also gives good arguments of why some lines, that are quite fashionable, are not recomended by his. This is good because I can see the author's point of view and not an attempt to avoid creative discussion. In that sense my copy of "Understanding the Grunfeld" is full notes by me where I disagree with Mr. Rowson or where I think that there is an easier solution [I wonder if Mr. Rowson would appreciate my views on the opening and my objections...] For instance, the chapter about 4.Bf4 (Hydra) has many, many pointers that will let you survive as Black. However, in one of the variations, 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5.Rc1, he recomends 5...Nh4. This is surprising since Rowson suggests that Rc1 by White signals Black to do dxc4 later in the book... Indeed 5...dxc4 is also acceptable according to Suetin. Still, the whole Hydra chapter book made me think about the variation as whole and to come up with a repertoire that would keep me alive if ever challenged in this important chapter of the Grunfeld and I can only thank Mr. Rowson for a recent nice win even after disagreeing with him! The Hydra chapter pays for the effort of buying the book.
The exchange variation is also covered in detail and I can only say that finally I understood the reasoning behind some obscure moves. That chapter also pays for the effort of buying the book and it is, as far as I know, the best treatment of the exchange that I have ever seen.
I am not an expert in the Grunfeld but having scored 3 wins and a draw out of 4 games after deciding to switch to this opening made me fall in love with it... Much of this is because of Mr. Rowson's book.
This is a book that I will read again and again and again...
Gem of a Book.......2002-07-09
I have had this book for around 3-4 years and this book is not your ordinary opening book. This book is almost more a middle game book than a typical opening book with its various plans and ideas depending on pawn structure. He also adds a certain personality to liven up the book to keep the reader interested. Even though some of the theory has changed a little I still refer to it for ideas and plans. This book is aimed at the intermediate level audience (1700+) but I think a lower rated player can learn much from it; Im around (1500). Another book of his THE SEVEN DEADLY CHESS SINS is also an excellent book and I highly recommend it even though I think its aimed a little higher than GM Rowson's first book. Understanding the Grunfeld is wrote how a opening book should be.
Unusual for me, but very good........2002-06-18
This book was a new experience for me. I am used to ECO (Encyclopedia of Chess Openings) style for the structure of an opening book. Mr.Rowson has chosen a thematic structure so it demands more work to put the stuff in a ECO style way, but the matter is well presented and explained, and the author has a tremendous sens of humour. A real good book if you wish to understand this opening system, in harmony with the quality of The Gambit Publications.
Best Grunfeld Book on the market.......2002-04-09
I am a LIFE-Master. I teach chess for a living. I have been playing tournamment chess since the late 60's. And the Grunfeld used to be my primary defense against the Queen's Pawn Opening. This is simply maybe the best book on the Grunfeld that is available today. Every line is covered. The analysis if of the highest quality. The writing is clear and concise and very easy to understand. You cannot go wrong getting this book. (Many good, complete and well-annotated games inside.)
Should of covered Vs. English..........2001-11-29
This might be a good book if the author took the time to maybe do least 1 chapter on using Grunfeld Vs. The English opening... Thats where I use it mostly and I find it works rather well to say least... Would of been nice if he gave some lines and some games using it... Even Botvinnik 100 Selected games has least Two Grunfeld Games vs. English... As for Understanding the Grunfeld this is a good starter book... Rowson is no world champion or even close to elite player... Yet for his limited skills and attempts to waste space in the book with silly comments... About his only good comment is calling the d pawn Delroy... Other than that he isnt really creating anything that isnt already known or used... Still reading the book isnt so bad to say least... One person I know calls it the best opening book he ever read etc... Still if he cant toss some coverage of it vs. the English I really cant rate it higher than 3 stars... Also many seemed to of ranked it a bit higher than it really should be... So 3 stars isnt gonna knock it down, yet someone that reads review might think about it more... Of the books I know that exist on Grunfeld Id have to say this is the best one... Some of the humor is stupid at best and can get annoying if trying to learn something... While least one chapter name not many americans have any idea what it relates to... Id of given this a higher rating perhaps if the Price wasnt so Inflated... For what it costs it should have coverage vs. the English to even a small degree... If you took out all his stupid comments that nobody cares about and added that content this would be a superior book and maybe worth the $$$... Still if you can afford it and need a book on Grunfeld Id go with this one...

Customer Reviews:
You'll remember the tips in this book, and they work too.......2007-09-23
I loved how the authors used their own "wow" experiences to relate to everyday situations.
The principles are easy to understand, and most importantly, easy to remember and follow. I tried out just one of the tips at first and found that I gained more composure in difficult situations, both at work and at home. The book is a quick read too.
I loaned my copy out to several friends (young professionals & 30-somethings) and they just kept passing it around to their friends. Apparently, everyone who read my copy went out and bought their own to keep. I finally got mine back.
An Executive Director at a private college even told me that she's recommending that "Leading From the Front" be added to the required reading list for a couple of courses.
A Great Book for Everyone!.......2007-06-26
I heard about this book from, "The Girls Guide to Being a Boss Without Being a Bitch" (which I also recommend). I decided to conduct one of the leadership workshops "Strive for Five" that Courtney and Angie recommend. You have a group of five women - in my case there are six of us - read the book and have weekly conference calls to discuss and share ideas. It has been such a valuable experience for all of us and we are enjoying the experience tremendously! I highly recommend this workshop idea to any and every manager out there. Not only that, but it really has great life lessons for everyone as we all need to be leaders in every aspect of our lives (not just at work).
Solid leadership basics, with good application in the workplace........2007-05-08
As female manager of people for the past 30 + years, I believe it is never too late to review basic leadership principles. While I feel I regularly subscribe to Angie and Courtney's thought processes, I enjoyed reading this book and was impressed with how it hit on parallels that apply to business and the armed forces. The only point I disagreed with was the negativity regarding crying at work. Many females (myself included) have cried at work when faced with frustrating circumstances. I tend to think this is not viewed as negative by others as it is simply a release of emotions that cannot always be controlled. At times, it is an outward communication of passion regarding the issue at hand. Other than this point, I thought the book was great and have recommended it to direct reports and peers - male and female!
Leadership for women.......2007-02-26
I bought this book for a number of women employees and managers that I work with - initial reactions were reserved but after reading the book all thanked me for the gift. The book does a great job of making it clear that women can lead just like men and can face and overcome the same challenges. The authors tell their personal stories and relate them to the leadership principles. In all, a great book for women 'hesitating' to lead or those seeking to understand the difference between management and leadership.
Amazing read -- relevant to every area of your life.......2006-05-05
I loved this book. I picked it up at the airport because I was curious of the subject matter -- I didn't know how Marine Corps leadership applied to my life. The book caught me from the beginning. I admire the authors' ability to tell their personal stories and relate them to the leadership principles. This in an important book for every woman on her quest for personal and professional achievement. Buy this book for your friends, family members and colleagues who want to be better leaders.
