5 out of 5 stars Fantastic for something that should have been impossible..........2003-12-14

This book is extraordinary, if for no other reason than the fact that many of the images inside are not available or extremely hard to find. I know from personal experience that even some of the artists included no longer have some of their own images and the authors should be commended for their research. The prodution value of the book is fantastic and Malcom Couch (art director) did a wonderful job placing the images in an appealing and flowing format.
I am delighted to have this book in my collection. The International Assoc. of SFF Art voted these works the best for good reason. It brings back 20 years of amazing memorys of science fiction-fantasy art and fandom and I will never lend this one out! It is no wonder that I have given several of these books as gifts already!
There are a few images whose reproduction seems to have come from damaged originals. For example, I have seen some of the Frazetta originals in his museum and the overall condition of some of the paintings are lacking, and apparently the authors used photo images of those originals, as a result the original's pre-existing damage shows. It is a shame that better images cannot be found. I am surprised that they did include as much of the Frazetta collection as they did knowing the "difficult" Frazetta reputation for dealing with publications.
If you want a wonderfully comprehensive collection of some of the world's very best sci-fi/fantasy art, THIS is it. It is a must to go along with all those great Spectrums (to be honest, I have to say I would keep this above all others if I had to choose). Thank you to Mr.Grant and Ms.Humphrey for all their hard work!

5 out of 5 stars Go Get It!.......2003-12-02

Very often color reproduction is lacking in books of this type and there are very very few problems with this volume. The production values are extremely high and thank you to the production/design team for using a beautifully coated paper that doesn't reflex back my face in its pages. Over the years of attending conventions I have been privileged to see much of the art included in this book on exhibit - although not so privileged to be able to afford to buy any of it. It is a treat that I can now have it "all" in my home. What a wonderful anthology of SF & Fantasy art! For my money it's far superior to anything Spectrum has ever produced.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been MUCH better.......2003-10-24

What should have been a nice history of the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists annual awards turns out being a mish-mash of art. Reproduction quality is all across the board and ranges from being very good to simply awful (the Frazettas, some of Hickman's, Brad Foster's, some of Jim Gurney's, etc. are printed so badly that it would have been best to not include them at all). Troubling too are the numeous tiny reproductions: if the book is supposed to celebrate the art, why make some the size of postage stamps? There definitely are some very good pieces nicely reproduced (Whelan, Donato, Palencar, etc.), but most are already available in other books. At the fairly hefty cover price I was expecting much more than what the editors and publisher delivered.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Anthology!.......2003-10-22

Wow! This is a book I've been waiting a long time! Over 300 of the best fantasy & sci-fi art works from about the last 20 year's. Imposibly to say how many treasures there are in here - just as tough to discribe how beautifuly the book is made, because the printing of almost all the pictures is better than I have seen any where else. I would have been happy with fewer Frazzeta pictures, because they seem dull and old guard beside the others, it seems strange I complain about too many Frazzeta pictures I know! Great to see a collection of pictures by the late great Alex Shomburg though. Lots of great great great art by Don Maitz, Micheal Whelan, James Gurny, others. The best collection of sci-fi and fantasy pictures in years, its so righteous I like just holding it!

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

An samurai of superb skills, because of political reasons, goes his own way, and takes his kid with him, partly to stop him from being murderered.

Along the way, of course, you will get all the sword slinging, head slicing samurai action you could want.

A grim, uncompromising and violent man, this is not your fluffy kids manga, so worth a look from that point of view. Not too many of those around in English, with an art style that is more likely to appeal.

    4 out of 5 stars anime.......2007-02-19

I like this book. It is well written and one can see where the cause is comming from. Unfortunatly I would recomend seeing the DVD, since these are awesome martial arts film. These books also explain some questions that are left unexplain in the movie (or the english caption in the movies)since my Japanese is limited to a few words.

1 out of 5 stars But is it art? .......2007-01-11

First, I have to admit, I'm not a big manga fan. Though I love some anime onscreen and dig the comics, this is not what I had in mind.
Found out about Lone Wolf through a parody in Usagi Yojimbo and if that's enough to make me a wannabe just stop reading, cause I really hated this little book. The artwork was so gritty and coarse that you could barely tell what was happening and then everyone was dead. Wasn't difficult, wasn't artistic, just some blurs and then everyone is dead again. Plot? Near as I can tell its a guy and his kid who kill everyone they meet. That's it.
Takes a lot to make me not finish a book, especially a comic. I made it maybe 15 pages into this one.

5 out of 5 stars Re: Lone Wolf and Cub.......2006-08-03

One of the best pieces of literature I've ever read. The fact that it's a "comic" book kills the chance of it being read by a much larger audience. Most people who wouldn't give comics a chance would be surprised at how much they would like this story.

The story is as tragic as they come. Honor and revenge take Ogami and his son, Daigoro, down a path that no child should ever have to live or experience. The hardships of the child touched me the most.

If anything, the story is very educational. Kozure Okami's research and insight into Edo was very thorough. I learned alot about that time period. It was an excellent learing tool.

I you get the first volume, you'll never stop until you get all 28 volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Great story and artwork. Too bad about the size........2006-07-20

There's no doubt that this is a great series with excellent stories and artwork. My only complaint is about the 6" by 4" size. One of the consequences is that the text is very small and bound to induce eye strain in readers (especially those who are over the age of forty).

From the editors of the most hilarious periodical around comes The Onion's Finest News Reporting, a collection of stories and commentaries with a sublime satirical bite. Devotees of the Madison, Wisconsin, weekly will erupt with laughter at each turn of the page, while newcomers will wonder how they have done without such headlines as "Civil War Enthusiasts Burn Atlanta to Ground," "Saddam Hussein Steps Down Following Sex Scandal," "Lyndon Johnson Jr. Sworn in as George Editor," "Nation's Educators Alarmed by Poorly Written Teen Suicide Notes," and "Massive Oil Spill Results in Improved Wildlife Viscosity." The brilliant parodies following the headlines are consistently smart, irreverent, and hysterical. Some selections are masterworks of absurdity, such as op-ed pieces written from the perspectives of pylons, chemical plants, or appliances. The book also contains some choice picks from the magazine's "What Do You Think?" column, in which ordinary citizens sound off on timely topics such as the teaching of evolution in schools ("I am against evolution being taught in schools. I am also against widespread literacy and the refrigeration of food.") and the cloning of animals ("I can't believe it--imagine a whole field of sheep that all look alike!"). As with all effective satire, this volume seeks to hit society's raw nerves: homophobia, racism, sexism, even Canada--"Perky 'Canada' Has Own Government, Laws" reads one headline. But buyer beware: if Dave Barry is about your speed, you may find some of these stories (and the language) to be tasteless, if not offensive. Others will love this book for those very reasons. --Shawn Carkonen

4 out of 5 stars Fun collection of older stuff........2007-02-10

I enjoyed this book. It was funny, not their best but still good.

        5 out of 5 stars Freakin Hilarious.......2005-04-14

I stumbled upon the Onion while in New York where I came upon a bunch of free copies. It was hilarious. This was the first book from the Onion that I got. The articles aren't in chronological order but are instead bits and pieces from many different issues; a "best of" collection I guess. Anyway, as for "The Onion," there's nothing really like it in the world today. It is a satirical newspaper that has humorous headlines such as "Richard Simmons Fighting for Life in Estrogen Tent" as well as community voices with titles like "Those Motherf*cking Robins are on Thin Ice" in which an old man tells about how robins have caused him so much trouble (It's funnier if you read the article I guess). Some other funny stories include how Civil War enthusiasts march on Atlanta and emancipate the NFL Falcons team as well as an article entitled "Tibet Freedom Fighters Seize Yak. 'Whatever' say Chinese." Like I said, if you appreciate political humor and satire, this is definitely for you. There is some bad language, but if you can handle this, you will be crying by time you are finished because it is so funny.

5 out of 5 stars This onion will leave you crying...from laughter!.......2004-04-05

This is yet another great example of brilliant and witty writing on the part of the Onion's writers. From GM introducing "new, instant-win airbags" to Saddam Hussein stepping down because of a sex scandal and a local child destroying an ant colony, the writing is better than ever. The writers' ribald and vulgar sense of humor is sharper than ever, too, as Monica Lewinsky gets subpoenaed to "re-blow Clinton on Senate floor." It's tough to pick a favorite Onion book, but this one is right up there. Even the offensive ones are somehow funny. Get it, read it, and laugh again and again. Makes a great coffee table book.

        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2002-10-01

I discovered The Onion (its website) by accident, one day while searching on the Internet. And I was instantly hooked. The site is incredibly funny, and satirical and points the right amount of fun and directed political commentary at the key issues making the headlines. This is is simply important reading. While it is important to keep abreast of the serious journals and commnetary, its important to remember that satire and comedy are often as illustrative and explanatory than the serious stuff. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff, as usual.......2002-06-25

Hey, it's the Onion. I laughed all day. This is incredibly funny.

                Book Description

The present volume is one of a series which will cover the output of the Gramophone Company from its beginning in 1898 to 1929, when recording methods had progressed from the primitive trumpet to the sophisticated microphone. The Company operated through ten branches, and the catalogues of two of these (Italy and France) have already been published by Greenwood. This new volume adds Germany to the list, but the coverage extends to Austria, Switzerland, and Czechoslovakia and to any other country (including the United States) where there was interest in records whose source or language was German. The principal intention of this volume is to produce a complete listing of material within this field, and not merely a selection (e.g., operatic records only). Thus, it lists not only the important recordings from Wagner operas, but those from other composers, together with all the songs, popular and serious, recorded by the most important record company of the age. Also included are all the instrumental records of the time--by pianists, violinists, cellists, and harmonica players--as well as military music played by celebrated regimental bands. Included with this is a remarkable amount of material where the executant was also the composer, an area of unusual interest. In previous years, most records from this time period were unavailable, and there was virtually no chance of ever hearing them, particularly where copies were so rare as to exist in only one collection. The introduction of the long-playing record changed the situation and the invention of the compact disc has improved availability to an extent undreamed of even a few years ago. This volume is intended to provide collectors and archivists with a comprehensive and reliable guide to the contents of their collections.

5 out of 5 stars delightful, short, eminently readable biography.......2002-01-20

This 100-page volume is a good "Cliff Notes" biography of Beethoven, providing a chronological overview of Beethoven's life with descriptions of his major works interwoven into the text. The author briefly addresses Beethoven's childhood, and then focuses on the three recognized periods of the composer's life --early Beethoven, with a description of Beehoven's relationship with Mozart (and later other noted composers) and his adherence to classical style, the middle period following the composer's "Heilegenstadt Testament" (believed by many to be a suicide note), and the late period, during which Beethoven's music became very introspective. Following the biography, there is a complete listing by opus number of Beethoven's compositions, and then a list of recommended recordings.

This is a appetizer; it's a great book for someone who wants to learn about Beethoven but who is not yet prepared to plow through a long, technical biography. I understand that there is some controversy about Beethoven's life & love affairs -- this book doesn't address the controversy; it's a rather simple presentation, though it does present the basics well, and provides some background for someone who wants basic familiarity with the composer's life. Although it is hard to find, it may be available in public libraries. I highly recommend it.

                    Book Description

Winning at competitive games requires a results-oriented mindset that many players are simply not willing to adopt. This book walks players through the entire process: how to choose a game and learn basic proficiency, how to break through the mental barriers that hold most players back, and how to handle the issues that top players face. It also includes a complete analysis of Sun Tzu's book The Art of War and its applications to games of today. These foundational concepts apply to virtually all competitive games, and even have some application to "real life." Trade paperback. 142 pages.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but if you're really serious there's not much new here.......2007-07-20

Playing to Win is meant to be a guide for how to excel in any sort of competitive game or environment, from classic board games like chess to video arcade games like Street Fighter. Since I haven't played chess in years, I was much more interested in the 2D fighting game aspect of the book (as I'm sure most of the book's readers will be, given Sirlin's reputation in the fighting game community).

In that context, Sirlin's book is thorough and easily applicable. He takes the reader from the very foundations of competitive gaming (what differentiates good competitive games from bad, competitive games from non-competitive games, and "scrubs" from non-"scrubs"), all the way to more advanced tactics taken straight from Sun Tzu's Art of War.

That said, if you have been playing fighting games for more than a couple of years, almost none of this will be new to you. In fact, anyone who becomes serious about fighting games will discover all of the book's principles through their own experience, even if they cannot articulate their lessons as well as Mr. Sirlin.

The one exception is the player biography section, which gives short overviews of the play styles of various chess and Street Fighter players. This section, while entertaining, did not improve my game.

So who is this book for? It's for people just starting out with competitive games, who want a quick introduction to some of the ideas they will be grappling with. To this group, I can 100% recommend this book. As for more advanced or seasoned players, I'm not sure the book will really improve your game at all, but at the very least, it'll organize and fully articulate some of the ideas you already have.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth Reading.......2007-08-23

The book was full of practical and extremely useful examples. Easy to pick up and put down and digest in short bursts. Easy to focus on specific areas of concern -- not a textbook. It generated ideas and provided insight about how the interviewer thinks... well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Informative book, got a job right after reading it..........2007-03-08

Excellent book. The information was there and straight to the point. It was an easy read. I don't know if you will be able to use all the questions (because I couldn't) but I was able to find a good number of them. Also, had an interview with a major software company (guess) and they were very impressed with the questions. Went on to the 2nd round interviews. :-)

5 out of 5 stars A must have that'll give you an edge.......2006-12-09

In the world of job-seekers there are job-interviewers. Most of job-interviewers are bad because:
                    1) They were summoned at the last minute to interview you and didn't even read your resume
                    2) They have no interviewing skills and have no ideas about (a) what they are looking for and (b) how to ask questions
                    3) They just don't care of being good at what they do since the odds are in their favors and that there are no negative ramifications if they're not as good as they can be.

This make a lot of job-interviewers throw questions at you. Just because they don't know what to ask or simply because it is intellectually more difficult to come up with a good probing questions.

I have some of these guys ask if you have a question and then ask again and again and again.

They are putting the burden on you to talk, but at the same they just surrender the control of the interview to you. This is your opportunity to shine, and this excellent book will help you do just that.

The more time you spend reading and memorizing questions, the better your interviewing skills will be. The structure of the book is excellent and the way questions are structure makes it easy to use the book as a reference even when you're taking an interview on the phone!

This gave me an edge, and I've impressed more than one interviewers with my questions. If you do your research ahead of time and demonstrate that you have a good the knowledge of the company and its industry, there's no reason for you not to perform well.

A must have in your personal library.

                    3 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff.......2005-08-13

Much of this book is fluff. He spends a lot of ink on things a reasonable person would never say or do at an interview. Also, many of his "serious" question seem ill advised.

                    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical.......2005-08-09

I was waiting in line at the college bookstore, (buying a textbook), and this book was prominently featured. I thumbed through and was impressed at the straightforwardness of the questions. Making a list from these questions will, no doubt, give the impression on an interview, that you are focused, serious and organized. A worthwhile investment.
