Book Description
Between 1480 and 1520, a concentration of talented artists, including Melozzo da Forli, Bramante, Pinturrichio, Raphael and Michelangelo, arrived in Rome and produced some of the most enduring works of art ever created. This period, now called the High Renaissance, is generally considered to be one of the high points of Western civilization. How did it come about and what were the forces that converged to galvanize such an explosion of creative activity? In this study, Ingrid Rowland examines the culture, society, and intellectual norms that generated the High Renaissance. Fuelled by a volatile mix of economic development, scholarly longing for the glories of ancient civilization, and religious ferment, the High Renaissance, Rowland posits, was also a period in which artists, patrons, and scholars sought ‘new methods for doing new things’.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely superb.......1999-03-13
It is nearly impossible to overpraise Ingrid Rowland's book. Strikingly original, _The Culture of the High Renaissance_ is a dazzling display of scholarship and one of the finest examples of historical writing in recent memory. There is exceptional erudition here--her work is a feast of information, rare insight, and compelling interpretation--and it is presented by Rowland from beginning to end with enthusiasm and considerable grace. Refreshingly, she always gives the sense of inviting the reader along to share in the discovery of a world she knows so well, and so clearly loves. The writing itself is something extraordinary. Here the fascinating world of sixteenth century Rome is presented with passion, affection, and humor--a more than welcome antidote to the bloodless prose of much current academic writing. This should come as no surprise to readers familiar with Rowland's pieces in _The New York Review of Books_ (her current article, "Titian: The Sacred and Profane" is characteristically dazzling and not to be missed). It is easy to see why Rowland was recently recognized for her outstanding teaching at the University of Chicago. Lucky students...lucky readers. Passionate, learned, sexy, urbane and fascinating.......1999-03-02
From a review by Anthony Grafton in The New York Review of Books, March 4, 1999 (Vol. XLVI, No. 4), pp. 34-38. "Like Burckhardt, Ingrid Rowland sees the Renaissance as the birth of a new culture and society. Like Burckhardt, too, she brings this lost world back to three-dimensional life and vivid color, for, like him, she too is a splendid writer whose words evoke unforgettable images of Renaissance society. Rowland deftly describes the young artists and warriors we know from Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography, every ready to fight or fornicate. . . . More remarkably, Rowland does as much for the city's old scholars." "Though Rowland peoples her story with memorable characters, she also re-creates the institutions in which they had to make their way." "Especially effective-and particularly fascinating-are Rowland's recreations of particular Roman circles and their ways of making scholarship into art." "Rowland's remarkable enterprise in cultural history synthesizes earlier scholarship of many kinds: that of urban historian like David Coffin, Christopher Frömmel, and Charles Burroughs; of intellectual historians like John D'Amico and Charles Stinger; of historians of the classical revival in art and architecture like Otto Kurz, Elisabeth MacDougall, and Phyllis Pray Bober; of passionate delvers into Vatican manuscripts like Vittorio Fanelli and Massimo Miglio. But this book really rests more on primary than on secondary sources. . . . Her view of Roman intellectual life, her sense of personal interactions and intellectual collisions, derive directly form the cornucopia of documents she has discovered, evaluated, and edited." "Painters and writers, life as art, style as mediations, banquet years: Ingrid Rowland, like a contemporary Burckhardt, brings a lost world to life. She has given us a genuinely metropolitan High Renaissance, not only passionate and learned, but also sexy, urbane, and fascinating."

Book Description
The Burb Boys are back for phase four, just in time for a spring movie tie-in!
Over the Hedge chronicles the suburban lives of the critters who lived there first. When urban sprawl encroaches on their wild home, mischievous raccoon RJ and his sensitive best-buddy turtle Verne (aided by frenetic squirrel Sammy and a bevy of wacky rodents and marsupials) choose to take this rude incursion . . . with open arms. They critique suburbia's indulgences while exploiting its Dish TV, dishy lawn furniture, and deep-dish goulash of gar-baaage.
DreamWorks Animation is bringing the vision of Hedge creators Michael Fry and T Lewis to life in a feature film in Spring 2006, starring the voices of Bruce Willis as RJ and Garry Shandling as Verne. Other star voices in the computer-animated movie include Steve Carrell, Eugene Levy, Nick Nolte, William Shatner, Wanda Sykes, and singer Avril Lavigne.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection from a great comic strip.......2006-11-06
This is a very fuuny strip that has been around for years and is now a major animated feature. This volume, which has strips that were published before the movie also proves that the crazy squirrel, named Hammy in the movie and everything after that, was originally named Sammy. Why they changed the name is beyond me, but if you enjoy Over The Hedge, this is a great book of collected daily and Sunday strips.
Over the Hedge: Stuffed Animals.......2006-08-06
With the recent release of the Over the Hedge movie, more people are being exposed to the characters. Michael Fry does a superb job of showing humanity with all its warts as seen through our furry friends. Great book.
Not what I expected.......2006-08-01
Having watched the movie "Over The Hedge" I expected the characters to be just as funny, animated and entertaining. I found the books disappointing, slow and sometimes crass and NOT funny. I believe the screenwriters did a fantastic job in shaping this animated film, a rare case in which the movie is better than the book.
It's got a Shatner quote..........2006-07-05
...on the back cover.
What can I say, it's the 4th Over the Hedge book, and if you liked the first 3 (and the strip IS different then the movie), then you'll like Stuffed Animals. I read it everyday via comics.com (since the Indy Star doesn't actually have "funny" comics anymore) and I look forward to hearing what Verne & RJ are up to.
Over the Hedge : Stuffed Animals.......2006-06-24
This big book of comics was very, VERY funny! I enjoyed getting a laugh out of this book! Over the Hedge : Stuffed Animals has very funny topics. For example when RJ fishes. I would totally recommend this book, you would love it the same way I do!
Book Description
Office Space meets The National Lampoon in this clever and hilarious take-off on an office-supply catalog Stooples is a delightful send-up full of all thats absurd in modern office life, the perfect gift for any Dilbert fan or cubicle-dweller. Fluorescent light tanning butter (put that cubicle lighting to good use), wall murals of the Great Depression (remind employees who really controls the means of production), anal-retentive pocket planners (map out your day five minutes at a time), and many other office essentials are described in deadpan detail and shown in color photographs. Much more than just a good-natured satire, Stooples is a side-splitting journey into the often infuriating, sometimes pathetic, and always ridiculous nature of office life today.
Customer Reviews:
I liked this book.......2005-12-11
This book was well written. It was about a lifestyle very different from most people. It is Faye Resnicks perception of events surrounding Nicoles life. I thought it was very insightful and a good read.
Shockingly truthful and real........2005-09-23
People who thrash and despise this book fail to understand something--Faye Resnick wrote it in order to warn other women involved in violent and demoralizing relationships about what CAN happen to them if they remain in these tragic relationships. The stories about O.J.'s viciousness and cruelty toward Nicole and his ruthless manipulation of her family are (in retrospect) 100% true. I admire Ms. Resnick very much because of her courage and willingness to tell and talk about truths that many were not prepared to face or accept. This book is as real as can be and highly recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the painfully tragic relationship between Nicole and O.J. and the events that led up to this horrific double-murder.
what the (bleep)?.......2004-07-06
I thought this book would be a chronical of Nicole and OJ's relationship from the get-go, and how things eventually devolved to the sad state they were in at the end, but instead, it focused more on Faye Resnick's scatterbrained rantings about restaurants, clubs, sexual partners, vacations, and utterly soulless, vapid "friendships"...all provided in non-chronological order! There was relatively little information about the relationship between the famous couple: strange in a book that purports to be about that very subject. I feel sorry for Faye and Nicole, because I come away from reading this disjointed, rambling, bizarre account of seemingly disconnected events with the impression that both of them were seriously emotionally damaged women. So at least that was conveyed well.
The lifestyles or the rich and idle........2004-04-06
Poor Faye Resnick. I really feel sorry for this lady. It must be a hard life, being a Beaverly Hills socialite. At what restaurant do we eat? Who do we have affairs with? Can we go to Cabo San Lucos next week? Such are the mighty questions Faye asks in her book. All that stress must have forced the breakdown of her marriages and the cocaine and alcohol habits.
As the previous reviewers have already noted, there is not much sympathy for this kind of lifestyle.
I read this book for the simple fact of gaining some insight into Nicole's husband. O.J. is indeed a great actor. His facade has masked what he really is. In this, the book suceeds in giving some glimpses of a very troubled person. At the same time, it gives a poor view of the lifestyles of the rich and idle.
She is a nobody!!!!.......2003-12-30
I read this book, from the librbay, and it is quite infuriating... Firstly, Resnik lists her occupation is "socialite"????? Give me a break!!!!!
Her whole claim to fame is name dropping... (and, this is her only claim to fame...) When you read this book you realize how fake and pretnetious people like Bruce Jenner, Kris Jenner, Faye Resnik, and Nicole and O.J. Simpson really are/were. Its almost as though Resnik was more upset about Nicole's death because ahe lost her "link" to the "inner circle".
I also think that the things she wrote about Nicole were SOOOO disrespectful, not only to Nicole, but especially to Nicole's childre, I cant imagine them reading such awful things about their murdered mother, Didnt they go through enough??.... There are extremely private things that Faye discusses about Nicole that are so cold and hurtful (if they are even true) I cant imagine that this was Nicole's best friend. If she cared anything for Nicole she would have kept her collagen-enhanced mouth shut.
She is a brat, she has done NOTHING worthwhile for this country, her "best frined" or those poor children that she left behind.., I can not believe that the publishing co. allowed her to write such trash about a person that was brutally murdered. With a friend like this, who needs enemies?
Believe me

Great stuff insdie.......2006-03-26
Filled with really good information - a must have for any real fan of the Dave Matthews Band
Step Into the Light.......2005-10-20
Dave Matthews' life began with many setbacks. Yet, with his love of music, he overcame adversity to become part of one of the greatest bands of his time. In Step Into the Light, Morgan Delancey demonstrates how Dave Matthews' life and struggles influence his lyrics. He shows this through describing Dave Matthews' life in relation to his songs. He gives insight into what events in Matthews' life that inspired his titles and lyrics. This style is successful because it gives relevance to Matthews' life and work.
An example of this is shown when Delancey discusses the meaning begin the song, "The Stone". In the song, Matthews writes, "I was just wondering if you'd come along/ Hold up my head when my head won't hold on/ I'll do the same if the same's what you want". It's not until we learn from Delancey what happened in Matthews' life that we know the significance of the song. Delancey writes that Dave Matthews had done something wrong, and was searching for someone to confide to. We can see the importance of Matthews' own life to his lyrics. The song was a personal experience of his. We do not only see this in his lyrics but, also the titles of his songs.
In the titles of his songs, we can see the relation between Matthews' life and work. Delancey describes the meaning behind the title, "The Song That Jane Likes" by describing what happened in Matthews' life that made him name that title. Delancey writes that Matthews created the guitar riff before the lyrics. His sister, Jane, would beg him to play the riff over and over because she loved the sound. Once Matthews finalized it, he chose to name the song after her. We also see this in the song, "#34". The song is very soft, quiet and actually had no lyrics yet it is very meaningful once we find its significance to Matthews' life. Delancey states that Matthews dedicated the song to his sister who was murdered at the age of 34. Many of the struggles that Matthews encounters are inscribed in his titles.
Through comparing Matthews' life and work, we can see a deep connection. It's not until Delancey describes what actually happened in Matthews' life that we have a conception of the meaning of the songs. By paralleling actual events, Delancey gives more depth to the lyrics and titles. Delancey's style is successful because it shows the relevance in Matthews' life and work.
Snoozer.......2005-08-02
I am a huge DMB fan, but this book bored me to tears. It is full of historical information that may please many fans. I, however, just wanted a little more "story" from the reading experience.
Well written and researched........2003-07-16
I am huge DMB fan and I have to say that this is the most consise and well researched pieces that I have ever read. After hearing what trials and tribulations that the band had faced, it has spawned an even deeper appreciation for this band and for their music. It makes me want to either have been in Centerville during the times when DMB played their as a unsigned band or a taper running cross country to their shows. This book was absolutely amazing.
Step Into The Light.......2002-10-14
Many people feel that music is more powerful than words alone. For those who are fans of the Dave Matthews Band, I am sure they would agree with the preceding statement. Step Into The Light, by Morgan Delancey, is an incredible biography of the Dave Matthews Band providing an amazing account of the band's hardships, along with its many accomplishments.
Step Into The Light is the story of the formation of the band and the continuing effects that the group has had on all its fans and the world. The band started out playing at local bars and frat houses, but is now one of the highest money grossing bands of the decade.
The author, Morgan Delancey, seldom uses any literary devices, but has a certain style of writing that makes you feel as if you have known the band members all of your life. He writes of the band members in such a personal way that it seems as if he has known each member since they were kids. Delancey uses many quotes from the band to describe situations that the band has faced. He even goes as far as describing the meaning and purpose of each song that the band has written.
I thought that Step Into The Light was an amazing book. I loved every part of it and found it very interesting. If you are a Dave Matthews fan, then this is the book for you. The book has no specific theme, but its message for its readers is that anyone can make it to "the top" as long as they work hard and are dedicated to what they do.

"Jim and Joe were fighting, so their mother punished them by making them stand on the same sheet of newspaper ... in such a way that neither boy could touch the other. How?" (The answer's in the last paragraph of this review.)
Scratching your head? Lateral thinking puzzles are designed to make you do just that--and wrack your brain for the solutions to these inventive little gems. While the book can be read alone, the puzzles are best when played as a game with a group of friends: one person reads the scenario aloud, and the others try to deduce the answer by asking "yes" or "no" questions. "Is it an exceptionally large sheet of newspaper?" (no), "can the boys see each other?" (no). And while most of the puzzles are fictional, some of the most confounding stumpers are taken from real life. (Can you guess why the buttons on men's clothes are on the right but women's are on the left?)
Perplexing Lateral Thinking Puzzles, Paul Sloane's seventh book in the series, is as fresh and clever as the first, and is perfect for anyone who enjoys solving mysteries as much as they enjoy reading them.
(Did you figure out that Jim and Joe are on either side of a closed door, with the newspaper slid underneath? Then get ready to take on more than 100 other mind-melters in this entertaining volume.) --Matthew Baldwin
Book Description

As good as the rest.......1997-06-15
The latest book by Sloane (as of 6/15/97), it has some great puzzles and is just as good as all of his others. But be warned--these puzzles are really addicting! Fortunately, there are many books to purchase

Must read.......2007-01-09
I can think of 5 business books everyone should read, this is number 1
good idea for sales people...........2006-11-10
Urges companies to sell based on margin n ot price. Makes sales people understand why it is important to stay strong on price and how to do it.
Doesn't answer the question of how you compete when all your competition is price cutting!
Great material - poor presentation.......2006-06-19
I rate the book a 5 on content and timeliness but a 1 on presentation.
All you need to do is look at most advertisements today to realize that price competition has become the major way to conduct business. I have recognized and for years advised clients that "If you compete on price you are competing to go broke." Price pressure is even more intense considering that finding the lowest price for most products is just a few clicks away. Merchants have all conditioned consumers to be price conscious buyers. And our mind set as consumers carries over to our businesses.
The authors do a very good job of showing that most pricing problems are in the mind of the salesman or CEO and not in the mind of the buyer. They further show that it is simply impossible to cut prices and make up the difference in increased volume. One of the better concepts they present is if you lower your prices to increase your volume, all you do is work harder and go broke in the process. If the CEO can grasp that concept - and unfortunately all you need to do is to look at the history of companies that have gone bankrupt, especially in the airline industry - then the book is well worth reading.
As far as presentation, I have a lot of problems.
The authors could not really decide who their reader was. At times they were writing to the CEO and at times they were giving tips to the salesman in the field. It would have been much better if they had written two separate books - one for the CEO who determines policy and one for the salesman in the field.
They have a bad habit of repeating the same lessons throughout the book. It is okay and sometimes necessary to refer back to an idea or concept. But anyone reading this type book does not need the entire example repeated. Too much of that obscures the lesson to be learned.
The use of bold "bullet points" at the beginning of paragraphs was overdone. One place, opened at random, I found four bold paragraph headings on each page. To me these were a distraction.
It was annoying for them to keep repeating "one of your authors" experienced ... What is wrong with saying Lawrence or William?
They overdid some clichés - "the south bound end of a north bound donkey" was one. Once is enough. And they ended lots of examples of conversations with "blah ... blah ... blah"
The authors make some valid and important points. If you are going to conduct business in today's price conscious environment, you must learn to sell your product on something other than price. So the book is well worth reading. In my opinion, the presentation could be improved greatly.
This book is the "missing link" you've been needing..........2006-05-08
There are two types of people who want to absorb this book: salespeople and business owners or executives.
If as a salesperson, you've found yourself getting "beat up" by prospects and customers, this book teaches you in simple and easy to understand language how to not only put an end to getting beat up but how to also make the sale.
If as a salesperson, you find yourself spending inordinate amounts of time with customers who are difficult to work with, this book reveals how to work with only the best customers - and make more money while you do it.
If as a salesperson your commissions are slim because your selling price is too low and you haven't been able to sell at a higher price, this book will expose exactly how to raise your selling price and your commissions.
If you are a business owner or executive, you will want to read this book for two critical reasons.
One, you will learn how to put an end to your salespeople's whining and complaining about losing the sale to low-price competitors. You'll FINALLY KNOW HOW TO CALL THEIR BLUFF! No longer will your salespeople be able to "snow" you with their inability to sell. Now, you will be able to "call the shots" they way they really are so that your salespeople produce results instead of excuses.
Two, you will learn exactly how to keep your business out of bankruptcy and move your business away from break-even mode to high margin, high profitability mode.
On my end, I wish someone would have pointed me to this book when I first got started in sales so that I could have saved myself years of hardship. On your end, you'll be glad I recommended that you get this book for yourself so that you too are able to save years of hardship.
This book will pay for itself over and over!.......2006-03-09
This is an extremely well written book. Lots of Tips. Great insight into how buyers try to get you to reduce prices. I have purchased 5 copies of this book and given them to all of the people with direct influence on pricing, negotiation and financial decisions in the company. Once you understand and begin applying the principles, the margins just go up. The book will change your whole outlook such that you don't feel guilty turning down business that is only price based. This is probably the most significant business improvement book I have read in the last 5 years,
