Award-winning Finnish photographer Harri Kallio creates the illusion that these fascinating creatures are alive and abundant, living as they once did in their own unspoiled haven, the island of Mauritius. Accompanied by a thorough history of this extraordinary bird, including eyewitness accounts and pictorial sources, the book was the winner of the 2004 European Publishers' Award for Photography.

Overpriced book with few actual photographs.......2006-05-06
Photographs in this book come few and far between. For a $40-odd hardback, I expected page after page full of beautiful photography. What's there of the dodo is beautiful, but there's only maybe a dozen pages of good art, the rest is just text and filler.
You will Go Dodo over THIS book.......2005-12-16
Great vivid pictures of dodoes in their natural Mauritius habitat abound in this wonderful book, there is also great information to match!

Possibly the best of Punisher MAX.......2007-09-28
The Punisher MAX is a great comic. I couldn't bring myself to say 'better' than the Punisher Marvel Knights title, just different. The strength of the Marvel Knights title is its humor, while the strength of the MAX series is its uncompromising gore and grit. The writing is excellent throughout most of the story arcs, and the art is generally great as well. The exception to this being the first book, "In the Beginning" , where everyone is drawn so wrinkly that they look like humans crossed with pug dogs. But beginning here, with Kitchen Irish, the title has a run of great writing and excellent art to back it up. It's highly recommended for Punisher fans, or just those in need of a dark, violent, and still laugh-out-loud funny comic.
another great Punisher book.......2007-03-11
This is another outstanding Punisher comic book. The animation and story line are great.
Punisher as he should be.......2007-01-20
I am a big fan of Garth Ennis and The Punisher.
I read Garth's first Punisher work in 2000 and loved every issue.
This new series w/ MAX really gets deeper with his personality
and doesn't just show him as some killing machine(which is what we want).
Having him not kill that much this time around made the story much
more meaningful.I love my action just like the next guy,but I do
want to get more development out of Frank.
I hope Vol.2 Irish Kitchen is as well done.
BRILLIANT PUNISHER STORY.......2006-11-10
Meet the Punisher, or rather better realise you really don't wanna meet him. In fact, you could very sanely not want to have anything to do with him. This story is not about the MARVEL Universe Punisher, this story is about the around-the-block flesh and bones Frank Castle, aka_The Punisher. Afar is the world where some masked bloke in tights would jump into the panel and start throwing fancy punches and kicks. The guns in this story are really intended to kill and, mind you, bullets don't just kill, they kill by ripping flesh and bones and guts. given this context, the story is fast paced, and tightly driven. It works mostly as a presentation card, and it works brilliantly. Characterisation is superb, nicely intertwined with the plot. I don't think I could say more. The genre? Lessee, we have maffia killers, underground CIA killers, vigilante killer, shootings, flesh bitings, one castration, definitely best placed in the Violence-Action shelf.
So go and read it. Oh, kids stay away from it.
Just to say it twice: Kids_stay_away_from_it.
YE SHOWER OF C**TS!!.......2005-08-17
As in real-life events, Kitchen Irish starts after In the Beginning.
Ever wonder what how, when or why Hell's Kitchen reveals its ugly site?
This is where Kitchen Irish comes along. To get an average reader
understand the premise of the story, Ennis has used various references from
movies like Gangs of New York and The Devil's Own. In addition, Ennis
has created some of the wonderful supporting characters from real-life
celebrities or fictional characters such as Lucy Lawless, Martin Landau,
Bill the Butcher, Mason Verger and whoever that you see.
The gangs in Hell's Kitchen are fighting over a sum of $10 million - a
will left by the late gang boss Nesbitt. To this end, every gang will
slug it out toe to toe to reach for the prize at all costs, even if it
means of having their members killed or causing a collateral damage
which involves our vigilante. As it goes on and on, it seems that the gangs
will have a hard understanding on Nesbitt's message to them which
involves are harsh and punishing way of saying, "Will You Stop That? " or
"No Rest For The Wicked."
Kitchen Irish was the real opposite in terms of mood and tone depicted
in In The Beginning. Ennis has brought back the black-comedy elements
as seen in the Maxi series. The real highlight in this story arc is not
the story itself but Leandro Fernandez's (Wolverine) art. Clean and
better looking, it's totally different that what Lewis Larosa illustrated
in the previous volume. The colors are brighter and have more variety,
but one problem was that there are some inconsistencies in the
character faces drawn in one frame compared to the previous frame. Nonetheless,
Leandro's art was real good and thus he was brought in by Ennis to work
on the next upcoming story arcs, The Slavers and Up Is Down, Black Is
White.
A lot of people asked of the lack of sex elements in the current
series. One of the parts of the story is the only one moment in the series to
have sex elements. Although the series has the highs on wanton violence
and the language used, the real low was on the sex thing. As you can
see, Frank doesn't do this ever since the family's murder. Another thing
that makes the story fell short compared to In the Beginning is Frank
himself. In here, Frank became more or less a secondary character and
instead the gangs were given the priority first. Not much of the personal
emotions of Frank elicit so often were shown here.
Anyway, it provides a relief to the cold mood in the previous volume.
If you like the laughs, if you are a fan of Leandro's art or even like
The Punisher, it's a good read really. Good but not that great.

Does not include "The End".......2007-06-23
It's a fantastic book, which includes one of the best Punisher stoy arcs ever (In The Begining), but i thought that i'd let eveyone know that the post apocalyptic one shot The Punisher: The End is not in this book. But you can find it in the book From First To Last if you're trying to read it.
Punisher MAX: From First to Last
Anyone who doesn't buy this collection should be PUNISHED.......2007-06-19
Wow! This book blew my head off - figuratively speaking (No, I am not a criminal, Frank, and in no need of being punished). It is an AWESOME collection of two Punisher tales that forced me to read it in one sitting, neglecting my lunch, dinner, and loved ones. Essentially it combines the first two Marvel Punisher MAX trade paperbacks into one. The first story arc "In the Beginning" is my favorite, but the twist at the end of "Kitchen Irish" is so good that I tend to revise my opinion whenever I re-read this book. In the first few issues we are introduced to new villain Nicky Cavella, a twisted mobster with even more twisted henchmen, Ink and Putsy, to match. After multiple horrid deaths, and the general blood and destruction that is inevitable once you pair the Punisher with writer Garth Ennis, I came to realise that it was actually the stories that sold me on the book, and not the overall gore content and explicit over-the-top scenarios I usually like about Ennis' writing. Frank Castle's final farewell to his old partner Micro is also one of the best scenes in the series, as well as a bloody shootout on the deck of the Intrepid. One of the most gruesome explosions ever to be drawn in comics occur in these pages, and the resultant carnage that follows as the Punisher hunts down those responsible allows the reader to almost identify with the character. This collection is a must for any fan of Ennis, and for those who are hardcore Punisher fans, prepare to be BLOWN AWAY.
Deadly Details.......2007-05-18
Garth Ennis' re-examination of the murder of Frank Castle's family contains chilling new details. The shock and trauma of his family's end really underline Frank Castle's fanatical anti-Mafia jihad.
Lewis LaRosa's art is sketchy and free flowing and works well with the paint quality coloring. The Punisher is so hardcore in wiping out Mafiosi that you almost feel sorry for them.
Interestingly, although it's not explored in detail, there is a small boy who is apparently a relative of some of the Mafia. This child eyewitnesses Castle's killing spree.
It's an interesting inversion of Frank's witnessing of his family's deaths. Now, a child of a Mafiosi sees his loved ones gunned down by Frank's bullets.
Could this be a Mafia version of the Punisher?
The second story arc, "Kitchen Irish", is a nice take on the IRA and the artwork is much more of a realistic style than Larosa's. It's enjoyable but the end is kind of predictable.
Mostly shock value.......2005-12-31
the story is so very shallow, the book is six issues of gore, cussing and as much over the top stuff as ennis can pack in here, ennis is like a kid in a candy store and was bad enough before they took away the censors.
The book is set in a new "max" world where frank is not surrounded by by super heroes and none of the events of his old books exist (otherwise one of the charcters here would be stone cold dead), some might like that but I think the interactions with the old characters brought a lot to the book, but other than one character in the book, none of the ong history of enemies and allies have been around under ennis run, it's a shame since so many of them are just left hanging in limbo, unresolved, and some enemies like Jigsaw are never to be seen again i guess.
With great titles like river of blood or even the ennis classic welcome back frank, i just can't see the need to get this unless your running out of punisher titles.
The Punisher puts the graphic back in graphic novel.......2005-12-28
This Book Was THE most messed up piece of literatiture Ive ever read. If you love blood gore death and The Punisher Buy this book,
However if you know nothing about the inter workings of the human body are sensitive or don't know the mening of irish swear words THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!
Book Description
Here are more than 100 of the best Jewish jokes you'll ever hear, interspersed with perceptive and persuasive insight into what they can tell us about how Jews see themselves, their families, and their friends, and what they think about money, sex, and success. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin is as celebrated for his wit as for his scholarship, and in this immensely entertaining book, he displays both in equal measure. Stimulating, something stinging, and always very, very funny, Jewish Humor offers a classic portrait of the Jewish collective unconscious.
Customer Reviews:
Easy history.......2007-08-15
Good light history of Jewish humor. Lots of classical jokes and a plausible narrative on the the roots of this genre. My only disagreement was with the anti-Arab bias that crept through.
A Big Telushkin Fan.......2007-07-30
I ordered "Jewish Humor" for three reasons:
1.) The previous Telushkin books I read, "Words that Hurt; Words that Heal," and "Jewish Literacy."
2.) The genius I'd discovered years ago in the old LP classic "Woody Allen, The Night Club Years." If anyone has ever said to you, "I shot a moose once. I was hunting upstate New York,..," then you know what I'm talkng about.
3.) My recent subscription to XM radio, where the non swearing comedy channels are loaded with fabulous, classic comedy entirely dominated (I realized one day), by Jewish commedians (Youngman, Allen, Fields, Rivers, Mason, Brooks, Seinfeld, Dangerfield, etc., etc.)
Where others see scholarship, I see affection, grace, humility, and chutzpah. To me, Telushkin is just a big sweetheart. He has accumulated a huge body of work that essentially seeks to share, communicate, explain, heal, find common ground, and help us all understand what it means to be Jewish.
The introduction, in the context of explaining the many subtle nuances of Jewish humor, provides an excellent understanding for Jewish reality. After all, most good humor is based, at least in part, on the truth.
If you're looking for an encyclopedia of Jewish humor, this is a good but perhaps not your best option. If your looking to understand Jewish humor and the Jewish tradition and spirit, this is as good as it gets.
"...the next morning, upon awakening in the woods in a moose suit, Mr. Berkowitz is shot, stuffed and mounted in the New York Athletic Club. But the joke is on them, because its restricted."
If Jacob Cohen(Rodney Dangerfield)Were a Rabbi..........2006-12-29
I saw Rodney Dangerfield 'allavahshulim'(rest in peace)answer a heckler at Detroit's Ford Auditorium, with:"I remember when I had my first beer."I still use it-but I don't consider it specifically,Jewish. And although Rabbi Telushkin goes into great detail(beginning in the introduction)into why this isn't about ethnic humor in general,my favorite example is a footnote in chapter one(p.29)while Telushkin was being heckled...whoops.."challenged my assertion that early Judaism promoted the parent-child relationship:...('heckler')"Isn't it true that God's first commandment to Abraham was to leave his father's home?..."It is true,"I answered(Telushkin)."But he was seventy-five at the time(Genesis 12.4);he was entitled."
Lb. for lb.,Telushkin is the hippest rabbi I can think of(I'm a non-Orthodox Jew who attends services at a Conservative synagogue);I'd rate the late Abraham Joshua Heschel, second.Telushkin has written pretty terrifically on the widest range of subjects to rate him otherwise.
Just plain enjoyable - You don't have to be Jewish..........2005-01-24
This book is a real pleasure to read. Rabbi Telushkin not only tells some wonderful jokes he analyzes them in an interesting way. In his preface he notes that Jews do not joke about everything but have a certain set of subjects from verbal aggresiveness, to professional ambition which they persistently joke about. His message in the book is that the Jews joking about themselves tell a lot about their values, and that their jokes are really a mirror to the soul. So it is not surprising that one of the main subjects if the close relation of parents and children, and the tremendous worry pressure love concern parents show for their children. Telushkin does not develop an overall theory of Jewish humor though he of course notes that laughing at oneself is often a way of protecting oneself from the insults of others. An it is too a way of bringing about a kind of group or communal solidarity. Those that can laugh with me are really my friends. The fact that Jews so specialize in laughing at themselves Telushkin points out also contributes to their having had a predominant role in ' comedy in America. He cites the long list of Jewish comedians from the old line Burns, Groucho and other Marxes , Jack Benny , through the Milton Berle, Henny Youngman Phil Silvers down to the Seinfeld Billy Chrystal generation. Anyone who leaves out Alan King Jerry Lewis Buddy Hackett should of course be castigated for this. In any case the main point about this book is ' Try it you'll like it' Once in the Subway there used to be an add which went ' You don't have to be Jewish to like Levi's ryebread' I think the same might be said about this book. You don't have to be Jewish ( though it probably helps) to get many a good laugh out of this excellent work.
Good analysis on tasteful + questionable jokes about jews.......2004-09-19
This is the type of book that puts a smile on your face while you think about why these kind of jokes are funny. The writer makes historical/cultural comments on the jokes involved and uses such catchy chapter titles such as: "And I used to be a hunchback: assimilation and its delusions", "How did you create that hurricane: jokes on jewish business" or "God as an underacheiver". Some are old and familar but there is plenty of new material. Of course, my favorites poke fun at the Rabbis. Since the writer is one, he knows how to make me laugh. ;-)
Highly recommended.
Book Description
In China on Screen, Chris Berry and Mary Farquhar, leaders in the field of Chinese film studies, explore more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation. Providing new perspectives on key movements, themes, and filmmakers, Berry and Farquhar analyze the films of a variety of directors and actors, including Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, Wong Kar-wai, and Ang Lee. They argue for the abandonment of "national cinema" as an analytic tool and propose "cinema and the national" as a more productive framework. With this approach, they show how movies from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora construct and contest different ideas of Chinese nation -- as empire, republic, or ethnicity, and complicated by gender, class, style, transnationalism, and more. Among the issues and themes covered are the tension between operatic and realist modes, male and female star images, transnational production and circulation of Chinese films, the image of the good foreigner -- all related to different ways of imagining nation. Comprehensive and provocative, China on Screen is a crucial work of film analysis.
Customer Reviews:
An exploration of more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation.......2006-07-04
Chinese film studies experts Chris Berry and Mary Farquhar present China On Screen: Cinema And Nation, an exploration of more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation. Revealing how movies from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora create different ideas of Chinese nation, whether empire, republic, or ethnically based, China On Screen touches on such issues as male and female star images, transnational production, the image of the "good foreigner" among others. A quite thought-provoking and extensively researched academic study.

Book Description
When Ernst Krenek's opera Jonny spielt auf (Jonny plays on) opened in Leipzig in 1927, it became an instant and spectacular success. Performed in over a hundred cities and translated into a dozen languages, it became the most popular opera of this century. And Austrian-born Krenek, easily one of this century's most prolific major composers, became a wealthy man.
Ten years later, however, he found himself a destitute refugee, fleeing to the United States as Hitler's troops invaded Austria. His work, always avant-garde, had become increasingly political; Hitler banned it and labeled Krenek a "cultural Bolshevist." The composer endured long periods of hardship and neglect before his music, which was much admired by such colleagues as Stravinsky and Alban Berg but strange to American ears, was rediscovered by Europeans after the war. Eventually it brought him financial security and many honors, including the Gold Medal of Vienna and the Cross of Austria, and it has been celebrated by festivals in Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, and other cities.
Krenek, who in 1945 became an American citizen, has been as experimental and broad-ranging in his compositions as he has been prolific. His 240 musical works illustrate brilliantly the principal musical trends of the century: Neoromantic tonality, Neoclassicism, free atonality, the twelve-tone technique, integral serialism, and electronic music. In addition, Krenek has also been an accomplished teacher and writer. He has taught some of America's leading composers and has several collections of essays in both German and English to his credit.
In this first major biography of Krenek, Stewart chronicles both the personal and the professional events of this brilliant, resilient composer's life. He not only explains Krenek's music in terms that enable us to comprehend and appreciate its character but vividly illustrates how Krenek's imagination has been affected by his experiences, his associates, and the massive social and artistic changes of the twentieth century. Many of the most important music figures cross the landscape of this life--Franz Schreker, Artur Schnabel, T. W. Adorno, Alban Berg, Anton Webern, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Dimitri Mitropoulos, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau--confirming Krenek's position as one of the world's foremost composers.

Customer Reviews:
Interviews with 8 Gamblers.......2006-01-19
This book contains a series of 8 interviews with gamblers across a range of games (backgammon, horse racing, poker, other) of proportionate length and content. There is a standard range of in each discussion including youth, introduction to gaming, books, going broke, children and recommendations to others. Each interview is structured as an open ended question and answer session.
The author is not famliar with some of the answers as evidenced by reference to Harvel (for Harville) and may have lost other details in the transcription. An interesting aspect of the book is the definition of gaming slang (e.g. going broke). None of the questions are very pointed and the answers are equally dull. There is nothing about the questions or answers which is going to "open the bank" for any one. Instead, the book points to hard work and frequent losing streaks for the interviewees. Recent interest in poker may stimulate some interest. It was interesting to compare and contrast the answers and come away with my own picture regarding the key factors to success.
It is a fiction. Don't expect to find the secrets of the professional gamblers........2005-07-28
Do not expect this book to tell you anything about how the professional gamblers bet or what they perceive the right betting strategy is or how money management is about. This book is just some kind of fiction. By adopting a question-answer or interview approach, this book reveals how those professional gamblers started his/her first betting, how they became professional gamblers and what their interesting experiences were. This book is more of a leisure reading.
My favourite gambling book (out of more than 50!).......2005-02-21
This book has made me more money than any "How-to" book. The first time I read it, it was "only" entertainment. I thought "This was a really funny book, but I did not learn much". However, it was amazing how often I come to think of one passage or another while contemplating how to bet! I kept re-reading it, getting very useful hints on what to look for. It is now two years ago since I first read it and I got another one of these "flashbacks" while reading Ziemba's paper om horse betting markets. I though "Didn't they mentioned this in Gambling Wizards?" They sure did - along with one expert telling you why the PhDs model is flawed! All in all, I have been reading over 50 gambling books and this has given me the most help along the way - even though it is not even a "How to" book! My highest recommendation. Get ready to be both entertained and educated.
A book worth reading!.......2004-08-19
This book helped me incredibly understand the odds and help beat the casino at their games. I recommend it.
Candid Conversations with Professional Gamblers.......2004-03-04
Gambling Wizards: Conversations with the Worlds Greatest Gamblers, gives you exactly what you read in the title. A short intro to each person interviewed then a Q&A format from there on, some questions have some prior research on the part of the author so he knew which way to lead the conversation as well as a couple standard questions asked each person like "If your teenager came to you and wanted to be a professional gambler, what would you say?".
What I liked about this book the most is the personal information learned about these very famous gamblers. How they started on the road of gambling, personality, views on other gamblers and what it is like to be a professional gambler. I didn't expect them to be so candid and honest. The stereotype that most gamblers are liars hooked on drugs and alcohol didn't even come close to being upheld, most of them talk about having a great routine of exercise and are either completely against drinking and drugs or very infrequently touch it, especially while "working".
There are some really great stories about things that they've gone through, some shaken down by the government/police for money or flat out robbed by someone waiting in the parking lot. Being a millionaire one day, broke the next, and back again the day after. The gamblers don't give up secrets about particular games, which is something I didn't expect to see anyway since every time someone does then everyone knows and it doesn't work anymore.
The book is what you would expect if you were buying based on the title, candid conversations with professional gamblers. I enjoyed it.
