This expanded edition of the fall 1994 special issue of October includes new essays by Sarat Maharaj and by Molly Nesbit and Naomi Sawelson-Gorse. Book Description
The Jackson 500 paintings are spontaneous compositions that contain the buds of many of Biskup's recurring characters, themes, and color theories. This volume contains the first one hundred in the series of five hundred business card-sized paintings, reproduced at actual size. A fine document of process and inspiration!

The Jackson 500 Vol. 1.......2007-08-05
I really have enjoyed this book. I like the small compact siZe.
I like the fact that there is no text and just bursts of color.
As an artist myself, there is inspiration in this book.
Because of it's siZe, I can take it with me on long trips. It
is not a book you sit down and view all at once, I have had the book
for weeks and I probably have not viewed all the images. The whimsy
in this book lends itself to dreams that you want to take in small doses.
The artist, Tim Biskup, seems to be a new good source of fun. I will
get the other 2 volumes, becuse I am anxious to see more of this artist's work.

It's supposed to be humor, folks.......2006-09-02
I read this back in 1982 and considered it harmless satire on macho masculinity. Sure, there are a lot of knuckle draggers who really believe this stuff, but everyone is entitled to their own idiotic opinions. You're certainly not going to change anyone's attitude by telling them they're morons. Honestly, folks who take this seriously ought to remember that "real men" are too self-assured to care about other people's benighted definition of "real men". Bruce Feirstein had his moment in the sun, and now he's a footnote in feminist backlash. It doesn't matter whether he actually believed this stuff. I would guess he probably wrote the book just to get people riled up. Seems to have worked, too.
Overall the book is funny and a good read. Just don't read too much into it.
Does anyone remember?.......2006-08-03
I don't know if anyone remembers this book, which burst upon the scene in 1982 and instantly made its authors the current talk of the airwaves. It became a many-week bestseller, and one of them (I'm not sure which), proceeded to make the rounds of the talk shows, where he came off as intelligent, articulate, and funny, poked fun at his own book, and showed that the book really wasn't meant to be taken seriously in the first place. The scathing and well-written review by my fellow Top 50 reviewer E.A. Solinas notwithstanding, this shows they completely missed the point of the whole book. The book is a total satire, and pokes fun at the then raging battle between the sexes back in the 70s and 80s, when the traditional male role was under constant attack by feminists individually and the media collectively, and formerly secure, macho men who had never questioned their roles or behavior before were coping with a newly found insecurity and looking for a new definition of homegrown, American beefcake and maleness. That quest continues today in more subdued form (and with less existential angst), but whatever the ultimate fate of feminism, there's no doubt that it had a telling effect on many American men who examined their traditional roles for the first time. (Perhaps it could be said they finally realized they had delusions of gender). :-) This little book now stands as one of the funnier outposts along the ages old warpath in the battle between the sexes, especially in how that debate took shape and was framed in the U.S. during its earlier years.
Book of All Knowlege.......2006-04-09
This is the ultimate guide to all things MAN. It is the I-Ching of Manliness. My self (a Man)and my friends (also Men) refer to this tome of greatest wisdom and "The Book of All Knowledge". We put on on our wingtips, crank up the Chevy Straight 8, and and say "To hell with the enivornment, its full speed ahead"
A satire worth reading once, but not buying........2005-09-22
This book should be taken as a satire of dumb men. Even if it was not intended as such, most of us now think that the author's intention does not determine the meaning of a work. Amidst various moderately repulsive assertions (such as that women look best at age 16 and go downhill thereafter -- I don't agree at all) there is the remnant of an honest attempt to hold onto something that the authors perhaps thought was slipping away. I find some of the men that this book lampoons to be odious as well, but the attitude it upholds is even more grotesque. The reviewer who compares the attitude found in this work with that found in misandric feminist circles is quite correct.
Anyone who gives this book less than 5 stars must eat quiche.......2003-05-08
Classic book highlighting all that is masculine.
A must have for any teenage male about to take off for college - guaranteed to address any problem you'll encounter both at school and in your professional career.

One of the best of it's kind.......2006-08-26
This book is short and to the point. Sometimes when people write these kind of books, they elabroate forever. Not this one. There's not a lot of wordy explanations. I appreciate that. Info very precise with good advice and techniques pertaining specifically to commercials. Stone not only deals with the audition process, he helps you avoid making mistakes and falling for scams as well as showing how to market yourself.
I have not seen a more detailed or informative book on the subject.
Very basic info.......2006-08-12
This book is very short and the information is very general. Only a few things pertained specifically to commercials at all. There are much more detailed and informative books out there.

Industry Insight - "Acting Out"
By Holdon Log, LLC
If you are looking to work as a successful actor in commercials, or perhaps you already are and are in need of a brush up, we'd like to point you in the direction of Acting Out written by Stuart Stone, CCDA (Commercial Casting Directors Association) and Clio Award winner and Dennis Bailey.
If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Stuart at an audition or in a class, reading the book he co-authored, Acting Out, will offer you guidance and give you insight on what is expected before, during and after a successful audition. More importantly, as mentioned on Stuart's Web site (www.CommercialActing.Info) is how to "turn callbacks into bookings."
Several of us at Holdon Log (from all different backgrounds and at various stages in our commercial acting pursuits) recently read Acting Out and we agree that more Industry mysteries had been revealed, explained better and reinforced while turning the pages of this easy-to-read guide book complete with cleverly depicted moments that happen in real commercial casting sessions.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
Before Meeting A Prospective Commercial Agent:
"When you get an appointment with an agent you should call and confirm the night before, for a morning appointment, and the morning of, for an afternoon appointment. This effort will show them you are responsible. Many actors forget the business part of the equation; your professionalism will set you apart from the actor wannabees. Dress like you would on a general commercial call-with a leaning towards upscale casual. Avoid perfumes or colognes. Bring an up-to-date picture and resume with you. If you have a demo reel of your commercials, bring that as well. Arrive twenty minutes early to secure a parking space and find the office. Do not be late. And call if you have any problem keeping your appointment. The agent is taking time from his or her busy schedule to meet with you. DO NOT keep them waiting."
While Preparing For Your Photo Shoot & What To Look For While Selecting Your Headshots:
"The most important thing to remember is this: You want your picture to look like you do when you walk into any given audition. We can't stress that enough, so we're going to repeat it. You want your picture to look like you do when you walk into any given audition at any time. Not how you'd like to look after a visit to the plastic surgeon, not how your mother tells you how you look when she pinches your cheek, but how you really look."
During The Commercial Audition:
"It is imperative that you establish a beginning, middle and an end to your actions. This is a hard and fast rule in approaching any type of audition. You are, in a sense, performing a complete, short scene for the camera."
"While working, whether alone or with a partner, do not memorize the lines. Fully familiarize yourself, stick an operative phrase or two in your head, but do not commit the pages to memory. Unlike a theatrical audition where you have leeway to rehearse and memorize, the time you have with commercial copy is minimal. Most actors try to impress the casting director by having the dialogue memorized but they end up trying to remember the copy and are not able to act at all. They end up leaving the acting out, which is 50% of the work. Once in the audition room there will be a cue card with the copy clearly printed in bold magic marker situated on and easel next to the camera. Use it. If you memorize the copy, it's almost impossible to use the cue cards to help you out if you forget memorized lines. Instead, develop the skill of cue card reading."
During The Callback:
"No matter how many people are crowded into the room, focus your attention on the director. He or she is in charge this time around."
"It is generally important to wear the same clothes and hairstyle you did on the original call. (Click Here To View An ActorTrack Software Tip) "
When You've Worked The Job You've Booked...Before You Go:
"Then before you climb into your car, circle the set and thank everyone. Everyone. Not only is it just good manners-personal and professional-it is good business. Human nature being what it is, people like to work with actors they know are talented and personable...Kindness and integrity-as well as talent-are remembered."

The Best Acting Book Ever.......2005-06-23
I read Stuart's book and became so motivated to get out and start making things happen for myself with reagards to my acting career. He give excellant advice on what to do and how to do it. Anyone reading this book, will not want to put it down. It truly is the best book ever!
A Great Guidebook.......2004-04-29
When a few friends and I decided to explore commercial acting, we needed a roadmap. This book is it! There are a lot of acting books out there, but Stuart's stands out by explaining the process of breaking into commercials from the ground up without talking down to his reader. Concise, highly readable, and, most importantly, backed by Stuart's knowledge as both a working actor and casting director, this book teaches you how to be a professional and hit the ground running in a very competitive business.

TAB books should be for the GUITAR part, not the VOCALS!.......2000-04-04
This book is a big waste of money. I bought this hoping to see how to play the guitar parts to some of my favorite Crowes tunes. Instead this book maybe has the guitar intro, but then it just tabs the vocals! That's more or less worthless. Don't waste your money on this book. Even if you just want the lyrics, you can get those online for free. Stay away and don't be duped like I was.

Great Portable Fun!.......2006-05-03
You're probably familiar with the game Hangman, but just in case you aren't, here's how it works with two people: an individual comes up with a word or phrase while the other must guess it. At the bottom of the page are blanks representing letters. As the player guesses the letters, they are written in the appropriate spot. However, if a wrong letter is guessed, a body part is drawn on the gallows. If an entire body is drawn before the phrase is guessed, the one doing the guessing loses.
In his clever Scratch & Solve Hangman, Mike Ward offers a neat twist on an old favorite. You know how instant lottery cards require you to scratch off the metallic finish to reveal what's underneath? That's exactly the way this book works.
For each of the 96 puzzles, there are three components:
*Silver eggs for A through Z
*A dotted-line stick figure on the gallows
*Numbered blanks at the bottom
Here's an example of how a puzzle works. For puzzle one in the Scratch & Solve Hangman #3, I guess the letter "E". When I scratch off the silver egg under "E", it shows the numbers 6 and 8. I go to the bottom of the page and fill in the letter "E" for blanks 6 and 8.
I then guess "R", which revealed a stick figure sticking his tongue out! This means that the letter "R" is NOT a part of solution. If I had revealed six of those faces--which indicates drawing in the head, arms, torso and feet of the body on the gallows--then I would have lost!
However, because I guessed the phrase (poached eggs) before I drew all six body parts, I win! (Admittedly, I had the head and both arms drawn in before I guessed it! Whew!)
This little book is very portable, providing amusement and distraction just about anywhere. Highly recommended if you love Hangman!

fun game book, but difficult words for kids.......2006-07-17
I bought this gamebook for my children (ages 6,8,& 10) to keep them busy while traveling this summer. It is a fun and easy to use gamebook that requires only a pencil. However, the hangman words are difficult and inappropriate for young children. I was very surprised to see my daughter finish one of the puzzles resulting in the word "marijuana" and ask me what it means. Other words are difficult for children of these ages as well. ex. Genghis Khan and Saskatchewan. It would have been great if not for some of the words chosen.

Customer Reviews:
Hope is Not a Strategy.......2007-05-07
What great insight into the real world of complex decision-making. I now see in such complex sales that the process is to work with the client on the larger issues, not wait until an RFP is done -- because you are then too late. Well worth the time to read.
great book!.......2007-01-28
there r a lot of sales books. but this book deal with B2B and hi-tech sales. very clear, describe the situation well and improve the performance. it's a must to all sales, marketing and marcom managers of hi-tech companies.
The best book on the complex sale I've read.......2007-01-16
This book hits the nail right on the head regarding the complex sale process and what it takes to be successful in a complex selling situation. Like all selling books, it starts a little slow and dwells in obvious theory for the first 4-5 chapters and has a system named with an acronym. But those flaws aside, the last two-thirds of this book has some absolutely great selling concepts. I bought this book for the ten sales reps who report to me, and a lot of the terminology in the book has found its way into our daily vernacular. I firmly believe if you follow the concepts in this book faithfully, success in complex selling is much more likely than using any other selling concepts that I've seen.
Hopeful Strategy.......2006-11-15
Well...at the end of the day there IS a little hope involved, but if you did not work the strategy in this book for your complex sale, hope is all you got. When you are on the complex sale, you have this book and Mahan Khalsa's approach that blend together for a neat toolkit. I've had the opportunity to be part of a presentation from one of the principals at The Complex Sale and saw the tools in this book in action. Happy Selling & Good Luck!
Very good and pratical advice........2006-03-25
The book provides a way to look at the sales process. A more conceptual approach is taken and I found the book very usefull. I took away a few of the points that help me deal with clients, prospects and myself frequently.
I learned more from this book than most of the $200-400 corporate classes thatI have attended over the last few years.
Selling is not about you! It is ALL about the buyer!!
