Book Description
From one of the funniest minds--and pens--of our time, at last, the definitive collection of the very best of Opus, everyones favorite maladjusted penguin. One of Americas most beloved comic geniuses is back, with this collectible 25th anniversary compendium of the best of Opus, joined by his hilarious supporting cast, including Binkley, Milo, Bill the Cat, Steve Dallas, Ronald Ann, and the rest of the residents of Bloom County and Outland. From Antarctica to Omaha, Opus has cavorted with space creatures, impersonated rock stars, fended off accusations of penguin lust, and even campaigned for office. Now, in addition to the classic strips, Berkeley Breathed also brings us never-before-collected Bloom County cartoons and original all-new material from his Opus comics.Brace yourself for the sidesplitting, table-pounding, milk-through-the-nose-spewing laughter that only Opus and his outlandish friends can generate. The perfect collection for both die-hard fans and those discovering the matchless humor of Berkeley Breathed for the first time.

A walk down memory lane . . ........2007-06-16
I was a huge fan of Bloom County back during it's first run way back when. I looked forward to turning to the comics page for my daily laugh. Opus was one of many great characters in that strip, but he stood out because he was the only penguin.
Reading these strips covering not only the original run, but also the resurrected strip, brought back a lot of good laughs and provided some new ones.
May Opus live forever.
Another Great Opus Opus.......2007-01-23
At his best Berkley Breathed has given us the delightful Opus--the FIRST movie star penguin--along with Bill the Cat, and other luminaries we met in the "funny papers."
If his work from "Bloom County" to "Opus" were in gibberish, we would still love Breathed's delicious art work and caricature. But his lampooning contemporary society and our constant silliness is the cherry on top.
When he turns his art in to hammer to bash his political foes, BReathed is dull, monotonous, and not funny. Even on those off days I remain a fan of his effulgent artwork. Onward, Opus!
I Love This Cartoonist.......2006-07-04
I have loved these cartoons since the first one I read years ago. I am so happy to see Opus appearing again recently. I loved Bloom County. I love Bill the Cat and was so happy to see him in a recent Opus cartoon. Keep up the great work. I am 73 years old and laughing keeps me young and cheerful. We need more like this.
Berkely Rocks!.......2006-03-04
What's there to say? Genius. There should be an animated show on Adult Swim called Bloom County vs. Calvin & Hobbes. Spaceman Spiff takes on Opus.
Just as good the 2nd time around.......2006-03-01
The book was fun to read as well as look at. The humor is timeless.
Book Description
Cindy Chupack takes a hilarious look at love, dating-and not dating-in this witty, truthful and utterly charming book.Tackling topics such as "sexual sorbet" (the first man you sleep with after a breakup), "the VISA defense" (the claim, usually invoked by men, that 'I paid, therefore I am innocent') and "eggsistential crisis" (a panic attack, common among women in their late thirties), The Between Boyfriends Book is as reassuring as that late-night post-date phone call to a best friend. It says: you may be single, but you are not alone."Oh, how I love this book! I laughed out loud again and again. It hits such an intimate and true chord, it's painful actually, how insightful Cindy Chupack is. Every woman who's been through the dating miasma must read it."- Julia Sweeney"Cindy Chupack is funny about single.Very funny. And smart. And sympathetic. And empathetic. And helpful. And the stories in this book are really horrible in a great way."- Delia Ephron
Customer Reviews:
Very Disappointed.......2007-08-09
I am usually a very fast reader and this book was very difficult for me to sit down and read for any amount of time, no where near as witty as I hoped. There are a few lines that made me smile but for the most part the bookwas pointless and very unhelpful.
Ms. Chupack: The Breakup-Girl's Best Friend.......2007-01-21
Instead of snarking bitterly about bad boys (and yes, I know, there are plenty out there to snark about), she takes the high road by holding fast to her romantic idealism even as she pokes fun at the mating rituals and the bizarre sub-classes of men swimming around the mid-30's gal's dating pool. It's a very funny book, but there's also a lot of smarts and sincerity underlying every wry vignette.
This book gave me hope when I was hurting, and reminded me that we all go through this misery to some degree or another, and there IS life after "The Loser".
Great!.......2006-12-21
This is one of my favorite books! I found it by mistake. I picked it up and read the back and figured I try it out. I'm so glad I did. This is a book that makes you laugh and say to yourself, "I so did that"!
It's as if she was writing my life story..........2006-09-05
Where has she been hiding? Obviously Cindy Chupack has been following me and observing my life- because her book was like reading my diary (if I wrote that well!). The book is fabulous, totally easy to identify with, and I can't recommend it enough. It's a great place filler for those of us missing Sex and the City!
Hilarious!.......2005-09-04
This book was an extremely funny and easy read! Read it whether you currently have a boyfriend or not and you're sure to get a good laugh. I've never seen an episode of 'Sex and the City' but since the author of this book is a writer for the show, I'm sure the show was all that it was cracked up to be.
Book Description
"A good movie," John Cassavetes has remarked, "will ask you questions you don't already know the answers to." And in his films, Cassavetes is as good as his word. Taking up the radical question that Cassavetes's films consistently posespecifically, where is the line between actor and character, fiction and reality, film and life?George Kouvaros reveals the unique, and uniquely illuminating, position that Cassavetes's work occupies at the intersection of filmmaking and film theory.
Central to any understanding of Cassavetes's achievement is the issue of performance. Looking at the work of Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazzara, and Cassavetes himself in films such as Faces, A Woman under the Influence, and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Kouvaros shows how performative instancesgestures, words, or glancesopen up intimations of dramas belonging neither strictly to these films nor to the everyday worlds in which they are immersed.
A major reassessment of the filmmaker as a formal experimenter, Where Does It Happen? gives Cassavetes his due as a filmmaker whose critical place in the modern cinema is only now becoming clear.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent essay about Cassavetes.......2004-08-19
An excellent essay about Cassavetes, perfectly clear, well informed and innovative. Among many strong proposals, it shows in a very rigorous and fascinating way how and why films are welcomed in a temporal context, what aspects of them are seen or not seen... How deeply films are historical subjects. A sensitive and exciting book.
The best critical book in English on Cassavetes.......2004-08-14
The shocking intolerance and hysteria of "idiephile"'s review demands a response. Comparing the writing of Ray Carney to ice cream and the writing of Kouvaros to ground glass is cheap-shot sloganeering and advertising, not criticism of any kind. In fact, the prose of Kouvaros is lucid and pleasurable, and what he has to say about Cassavetes is thoughtful and unpredictable. What a strident anti-intellectual like Cassavetes might have thought about any book written about him, especially an academic one, is irrelevant.
A splendid addition to Cassavetes studies.......2004-08-12
Many regard John Cassavetes as something of a wild home movie-maker, shooting improvisational and self-indulgent slices of autobiography in his own house, enlisting friends and family as collaborators, paying little regard to aesthetic or formal concerns. It is this idea that George Kouvaros sets out to challenge in his splendid new book. Courageously determined not to take Cassavetes at his own word, Kouvaros very title, WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN?, seems deliberately intended as a provocation, attached as it is to this study of a director who privileged the 'who' over the 'where'. But the word 'where' in Kouvaros' title refers equally to that place where his book 'happens', namely the arena of film theory. It is here that Kouvaros excels, since he has clearly read everything there is to read about Cassavetes, and puts his research to good use. WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN? is, then, as much a history of critical trends as a study of one man's oeuvre, and Kouvaros' book provides a fine overview of approaches to the director. Which is not to say that Kouvaros' book adds nothing new to the debate. On the contrary, chapters dedicated to THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE and LOVE STREAMS provide a series of sustained insights which made me eager to watch these masterpieces again.
Academic gobbledygook.......2004-07-16
Why do the professors feel that they have to turn everything into academic gobbledygook? This book takes a filmmaker who was known for his freedom from intellectual abstractions and critical cliches and turns him into a practitioner of the latest French-fried intellectual practices. You can't find Cassavetes here for the cant. His work is lost and unrecognizable, buried under the layers of continental critical jargon. If you are really interested in learning abouto Cassavete, skip Kouvaros and read the filmmaker's own descriptions of his films and his accounts of making them in Cassavetes on Cassavetes or in Ray Carney's books. Carney's books read like eating ice cream. This is like trying to chew and swallow ground glass. Too bad. Cassavetes deserves much better. He would have been howling with laughter at what has been done to him.

Book Description
Following in the footsteps of its successful predecessor, this new edition introduces the basic tenets of music theory and partwriting skills. A new design features visually striking pedagogical aids, allowing students to progress through ever-more challenging exercises at their own pace or to dip into the text at any point to brush up on specific skills. The authors have retained the self-instructional format of the previous two editions, with tests at the end of each part, while adding new quizzes at the end of each set and a cumulative test for Parts One through Six. Numerous examples from the music literature-a new feature of this edition-reinforce the theoretical concepts covered in each set; an appended study anthology of ten complete pieces allows students to see how individual concepts are woven into the fabric of a composition. The companion CD, keyed to specific frames in each set, provides immediate aural reinforcement.
Customer Reviews:
Unfortunate Revision.......2007-02-28
The previous edition of this book was set up in such a manner that the pages on the left side of the book were upside down. You would work through the book one way and then flip it over to work through the other way. Since you use a little card to cover up the answers on one side of the page it made it very easy to work quickly and drill yourself without revealing the answers until you needed them.
This edition while retaining the division of the page between answers and questions puts the instructions and information on the full page and is printed 'normally'. It takes a great deal more effort than the last edition to situate the card over the answers and you are constantly forced to remove it to read the instructions. A quick glance is all that is needed to come to ruin questions for drills. Also you have to write along the middle hump of the book which was not necessary in the previous revision due to everything being on the right side of the right page.
I am disappointed that they changed such a useful book and made it so cumbersome and poorly thought out. I would recommend tracking down a used (but unmarked) copy of the last edition as none of the information has really changed inside the book.
review of Programmed Course in MusicTheory by J. Clough.......2005-08-03
The information is laid out in a nice step-wise way. Repititions make it easy to assimilate the material. I am confident that working my way through the material will help me understand the music that I enjoy playing.
Great for homeschool moms with some music background........2004-07-07
I have a degree in music performance and have used this book successfully many times with my fellow homeschool moms and their kids. In private lessons and in more formal group settings this book has been most helpful, even with those who have had no musical background at all. Children from age 10 to 18 have learned the lessons from *cover to cover* with weekly instruction over the course of a year with me.
Additionally, once the lessons were completed we moved into sight-singing and ear training books (also from the Norton editions) and early part-writing. I feel that this book is actually better organized than the texts used in the theory classes at my conservatory (it was published after I graduated). There are some typos in the text and I would prefer that the answers were not quite so readily accessible(you might feel differently though), but other than that, I highly recommend this text.
Still the best programmed music theory text.......2002-01-28
The latest edition of this book has lost much of the classical simplicity and directness that made the previous editions so successful. Ugly icons crowd the page, statements are watered down, but still the text is far clearer than the other popular programmed text by Harder & Steinke. A student considering entering a conservatory or music school would be well prepared having worked through this book.
I'm dissapointed to see Norton's changes, and the increase in price, but I still recommend this text--it still is the best self-instruction program out there.
A very good book.......2001-01-26
I bought this book to brush up on my theory before returning to school for a 2nd undergrad degree in music, and I think it's helpful for three reasons. First, I've made it through the first 4 parts with relative ease, but I've also picked up enough tidbits of information to make it really useful. (I always knew how to play a major triad but never thought of the fact that it's made up of two 3rds, a major under a minor, or that a minor chord is a minor under a major.) Second, it is forcing me to memorize things like key signatures for minor keys, which I used to figure out by thinking of the relative major key. (That takes enough extra time to make it awkward at an audition.) Finally, it is a workbook, so you are expected to write the answers right in the book. It helps me to remember when I have to take the time to write the answer down, rather than just thinking of it. I haven't complete the entire book yet, but I know I'm just getting into the things I don't know!
All in all it is helping me to combine my practical performance knowledge with the reasons "why". I'm sure that understanding will lead to better performances.

Extremely easy to use, progressive guide.......2005-01-23
I found the format of this text to be extremely easy to use and practical. The format and concepts covered are thorough and help the developing musician gain a good concept of important aspects of music theory.
As a high school student preparing for auditions at a music conservatory, I was extremely panicked when I was informed I would have to take the SACRE, a timed music theory test covering topics such as scales, intervals, keys, etc. I've been playing violin for over ten years; why most of the concepts on this test are unfamiliar with me, I have no idea.
Fortunatley, the conservatory reccommended that I purchase this book, and my progress has been quite remarkable, to say the least.
The basic format of this book is in two columns: one side has questions with fill in the blank type format; the other side has a handy dandy bookmark that covers up the correct answer. Once you have progressed through the first several topics, flip the book and, on hte reverse side, more solutions!
My only complaint with this text would be that the beginning of each chapter lacks a summary or broad overview of the topic. At the very beginning of the text there are a few pages devoted to music notation such as sharps, flats, etc. but many of these are in reference for the beginning piano player. However, this bias may simply be because I play violin and am not as familiar with the keyboard as others may be. All complaints aside, the topics are progressive, and thus most things are quite easy to catch on to. For example, today in the span of about 2 hours I was able to grasp the concept of keys and perfect fifth intervals.
I would reccommend this text to any individual with some prior musical training (not necessarily in music theory)who needs to learn basic concepts of music theory. It is helpful if this text is used in conjunction with the assistance of a private instructor or music teacher; students with no former music experience may have a difficult time understanding some of the terminology.
a thorough drilling in basic music theory.......1999-03-13
I have most of my adult and adolescent piano students work through this. By the book alone they gain only a superficial understanding of music theory, but they are thoroughly drilled, and I am saved a lot of time. I'd give this five stars except that I prefer the earlier editions. The new voice-leading section intimidates many students; I have my students skip the rhythm section because I teach rhythm according to Paul Creston's method in his PRINCIPLES OF RHYTHM. A book I have most of my jazz and rock students work through is Jeff Burns's PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST.

The bible on self-publishing. Highly recommended by virtually everyone in the industry -- even other authors of books on the subject (many of whom probably followed the advice in Poynter's previous 11 editions).
Book Description
The Self-Publishing Manual explains the publishing process step-by-step, from idea through manuscript, printing, promotion, and sales. Dan Poynter, a leading authority on self-publishing, shows readers how to use innovative techniques to write books faster, produce books for less, and promote books more effectively. This revised edition covers all of the latest publishing technology such as downloadable books, print on demand, CD publishing, and electronic books. A 52-page appendix of valuable resources is included.
Download Description
With this book, you will learn how to speed write your book; copyright it yourself; bypass publishers; set up your own book publishing company; promote your books with book reviews, book signings, feature articles and radio/TV interviews; get your book into bookstores, specialty stores, catalogs and on the Web; and make spin-offs of your book. Nearly every one wants to write a book. Most people have the ability, some have the drive, but few have the organization. Therefore, the greatest need is for a simple system, a road map. The basic plan in this book will not only provide you with direction, it will promote the needed drive and expose abilities you never thought existed. Writing a book is probably easier than you think! If you can voice an opinion and think logically, you can write a book. If you can say it, you can write it. Most people have to work for a living and therefore can spend only a few minutes of each day on their book. Consequently, they can't keep the whole manuscript in their head. They become overwhelmed and confused, and find it easy to quit the project. The solution is to break up the manuscript into many small, easy-to-attack chunks (and never start at page 1, where the hill looks steepest). Then concentrate on one section at a time and do a thorough job on each one. Dan was prompted to write this book because so many authors and publishers wanted to know his secret to selling so many books. Now he is revealing to you the secrets of writing, producing and promoting your book-the good life of self-publishing.
Customer Reviews:
It's like a brochure.......2007-10-05
This is a great book, the problem is Dan has joined the likes of Dan Kennedy and Bill Glazier and many other info sellers. This book is really just a brochure for all the other products that Dan Poynter sells.
Instead of being a book that gives you 100% of the ammunition you need to publish a book, he gives you a brief overview and then tries to sell you hundreds of other items, this system is great for Dan, but not for the audience, because it's very expensive.
Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual Review.......2007-09-05
Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual is an excellent book. It provides a solid foundation for the new self-publishing author. It is a bit long, but provides a wealth of good information. Buy it.
Simply the Best!.......2007-08-28
Dan Poynter's book is simply the best reference guide to publishing I've read. The book is easy to follow, full of meaningful tips and information, as well as resources. I hired my book cover designer from the book! BTW, Robert Aulicino! This is just an overall great book.
I have read the book from cover to cover and reading it never fails to yield some tidbit of info that moves me forward in my marketing campaign for my book due to be released November 2007.

Review of Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual- 16th Edition.......2007-08-23
I am the author of a book about my four month old premature daughter born at just 18 ounces For the Love of Rachel: A Father's Story. Even though I worked with a publishing company rather than self published, this book was immensely helpful in totally understanding the process involved with both writing and marketing a book. Whether you are self-published or have a contract with a publishing company, knowing the right way to approach PR and distribution is essential. This book is one of the best that I have come across!
Dan is The Self Publishing Guru and this is great!.......2007-08-23
Dan's book is phenomenal. It is power-packed with the information for the person investigating the self-publishing environment. As an author and founder of a local writers group, I continue to be impressed with this book.
