    Book Description

Since the mid-1970s, George Condo has been painting portraits of people inhabiting his imagination. By transposing the techniques of the Italian Renaissance, Spanish Baroque, French Impressionism, Surrealism, 1950s Modernism, and Pop Art, Condo has created an original movement, which he calls Artificial Realism - the realistic representation of that which is artificial. In his first artist's monograph, The Imaginary Portraits of George Condo, the painter showcases an incredible selection of subjects - from Madonnas and Clowns to Metaphysical mannequins and Antipodular Beings - which had previously existed only on the periphery of his consciousness. Condo painted while on the move, and the imaginary characters were made manifest in hotel rooms during his travels throughout Europe. The result is a carnivalesque collection of creatures, the likes of which will most surely surprise, provoke, confuse, and delight.

      Book Description

When he was a child, Darby Conley used to wonder what his beloved pooch was thinking. That curiosity led to his creation of the hilarious strip Get Fuzzy in 1999, which has rapidly become one of the most popular cartoons in newspaper syndication. Showcasing the relationship between Bucky, a temperamental cat with an attitude; the sweet and sensitive dog Satchel; and their mild-mannered human companion, Rob Wilco, Get Fuzzy has cornered the market on anthropomorphic antics.Anyone who finds animals both amazing and amusing will find this new Get Fuzzy collection one of the most bitingly funny books ever printed.

these books just crack me up, my only complaint is they are too short! I never want to put them down, and read the whole thing in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars A Get Fuzzy Reading Guide.......2007-08-11

I won't go into how fantastic this comic strip is, but it is easily my favorite comic strip of all time. :)

For the uninitiated, there are 6 collections so far and three treasuries. The seventh collection is not yet released.

Please keep in mind that each treasury is two collections put together, so as far as I know the treasuries are the same as two of the collections, except I believe the treasuries have the Sunday comics in color while the collections have them in black and white.

In chronological order, the collections are:

      1. The Dog is Not a Toy: House Rule #4
      2. Fuzzy Logic: Get Fuzzy 2
      3. The Get Fuzzy Experience
      4. Blueprint for Disaster
      5. Say Cheesy: A Get Fuzzy Collection 5
      6. Scrum Bums
      7. I'm Ready for My Movie Contract: A Get Fuzzy Collection (not yet released)

      The treasuries are:

      1. Groovitude (encompassing collections 1 and 2).
      2. Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun (encompassing collections 3 and 4).
      3. Loserpalooza (encompassing collections 5 and 6).

These comics are beyond hilarious, and I would highly recommend them to pet lovers/haters of all ages. :)

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!.......2007-06-07

Get Fuzzy is the best! I've been hooked since I read the strip for the first time and now I buy every book as it comes out. If you like Get Fuzzy buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get any Fuzzier than this!.......2005-10-31

I just cant' get enough of Bucky, Satchel and Rob and the occasionl B character that drops in. If you've read the strip and were in any way amused then you must read "The Get Fuzzy Experience" or any Get Fuzzy book for that matter! I promise you won't be dissapointed. :-)

      5 out of 5 stars GET BUCKSPERIENCED.......2005-03-06

With 2 collections and a treasury under his belt, Darby Conley moves on with the lives of Rob, Bucky, and Satchel as they deal with 9/11, catnip, baseball rivalries (Rob - the Red Sox, Bucky - the Yankees, Satchel - the Cubs), tuna, Jackass, dog support groups, and ferrets (beware of Fungo Squiggly!!!). It was a rare treat to see Bucky and Satchel share at least one moment in the strip (even if it was only with whipped cream). An excellent follow-up to Fuzzy Logic. I especially liked the Hendrix album parody on the cover. Have you ever been bucksperienced? Well, I have.

Since the original Photo Oops was published, Hilary has become a Senator, Arnold Schwarzenegger is in as Governor of California and a host of Democratic hopefuls have sprung up, earnest and unprepared. Quayle has flown the coop, and Clinton (metaphorically) has gone the way of all flesh. This revised update of Photo Oops offers the quintessential images of today's politicians--trying their best to look honest and forthright, but luckily for us, failing miserably.

Hal Buell has done it again! I did a review of another book of his,"Bush Photo Oops" on March 10,2005,which I enjoyed just as much as this book.
Instead of limiting his humor to one person,Hall takes aim at all kinds of politicians. While the captions that the author are hilarious, don't overlook the real captions which he has included at the back of the book. The humor is even greater when both captions are read together. He covers photos from President Bush to Eisenhower in 1952.The layout is great, and as you are finished reading one page ,simply by turning the page you are treated to another gem. When you read the caption and have a laugh, you ask yourself how could a serious statement be made on such a ridiculous shot; then go to the back, and there you get it.
I remember the episode shown on page 73.President was at the Grand Ol' Opry in 1974.Roy Acuff,an excellent Yo-Yo player, had the President on stage and was showing him "how to do it".The author puts a completely different, and humorous, slant on the photo. Then again, after looking at page 19,turn to page75,and maybe a good caption might be;"Boy,we sure know how to enjoy the seashore!".Or how about the picture on of the First Lady sitting on Mr.T's lap giving him a kiss on the forehead. How about this for a caption."Who said,I could get into trouble over this?".
This book is a lot of fun and I bet the author has thousands more like them and let's hope he shares more with us.
In the meantime, maybe I'll clip out some pictures from the papers and mags and have some fun making my own captions. After all Hal Buell has shown us how to do it.

The trouble with scientists monopolizing the investigation of the natural world is that they don't always know what questions to ask. Science Is Fiction: The Films of Jean Painleve explores the work of a man interested in mathematics, art, medicine, and biology, who showed early cinema audiences the alien beauty of the sea and its creatures. Son of a French prime minister, Painleve studied natural science when it was a luxury, but he allied himself with the Surrealists and anarchists who caused such trouble in the 1920s and thereafter. Capable of grossing out Luis Buñuel but also inspiring a pan-European seahorse frenzy through his art, Painleve comes under critical analysis in this volume, which includes his own writings, stills and quotes from his films, notes from contemporaries including Leo Sauvage, and modern appreciations and listings of his work.

The pictures come close to capturing the essence of his magic, but his words are more evocative of his artistic sensibility, one that rejects humanization of nonhuman subjects and tells stories regardless of their potentially shocking or subversive themes. Providing the world with alternative means of examining art, science, and nature, Jean Painleve deserves much wider recognition from everyone he has influenced; Science is Fiction is a mighty leap in the right direction. --Rob Lightner

          Book Description

One of the first to plunge underwater with a camera to bring the subaquatic world to the screen, maverick scientific documentary filmmaker Jean Painlevé (1902-1989) captured the throes of a male seahorse giving birth, the geometric choreography of crystal formation, and the mating habits of hermaphrodite mollusks. In a lifetime spanning nearly the history of cinema itself, Painlevé made over 200 films, including The Seahorse, Freshwater Assassins, The Vampire, and The Love Life of the Octopus. His lyrical and instructive animal behavior films set to avant-garde scores were much admired by Surrealist contemporaries such as Antonin Artaud, Luis Buñuel, and Jean Vigo.

Science Is Fiction includes Marina McDougall's historically informative "Hybrid Roots," Brigitte Berg's heavily illustrated biographical essay "Contradictory Forces," art critic Ralph Rugoff's "Fluid Mechanics," a Libération interview with Painlevé, stills from Painlevé's most celebrated films laid out in storyboard fashion, and a selection of Painlevé's writings appearing for the first time in English. The latter include "Neo-Zoological Drama," a playful romp on the behavior of Turbellaria, or flatworms; "Mysteries and Miracles of Nature," an idiosyncratic catalog of unusual animal behavior; and "Scientific Film," a discussion of science films that pays homage to Painlevé's fellow pioneers. The book also includes French film critic André Bazin's "Science Film: Accidental Beauty," a review of the 1947 International Association of Science Film festival, organized by Painlevé.

          Copublished with Brico Press.

Science is Fiction was amazing! If you like Painleve you'll like the book. It's filled with so many interesting essays, and I found the interview with Painleve to be particularly interesting and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic beautiful book.......2001-11-19

Science is Fiction: The Films of Jean Painleve, edited by Andy Masaki Bellows and Marina McDougall with Brigitte Berg, exposes the reader to the odd and beautiful films of Jean Painlevé (1902-1989), who was both an artist and a scientist. These professions do not often mix, but in Painlevé's case, his scientific side made his film work stronger and stranger. He was the first to photograph sea creatures underwater, and he was also involved with surrealist artists like André Breton, Antonin Artaud, and film giant Georges Franju, in addition to his racecar driving pursuits. The images in his films are a combination of classroom science instruction and dance.

Painlevé was focused on aesthetics as well as scientific commentary in his films. According to this book, his two masterpieces are L'Hippocampe ("The Seahorse") and Le Vampire ("The Vampire"). L'Hippocampe (1934) is about the mating process between the male and female seahorse: The viewer sees a female laying eggs into the abdomen of a male, where he fertilizes them. To Painlevé, this represented the perfect relationship between the sexes. On a darker note, Le Vampire (1945) is a film that lends a political flavor to the behavior of vampire bats. The film stills displayed in the book are quite creepy. In one scene, as a bat falls asleep, it extends one of its wings in a Nazi-like salute.

Painlevé didn't believe that there was a separation between science and art. Throughout his life he founded a series of movie clubs as well as film schools. This lavishly designed book by designer Jean Wilcox is a perfect complement to the aesthetics of Painlevé. It is a book fetishist's dream date. Very rarely in this business does one see such a perfect combination of content, text, and design. Imagine the film viewer who went to see one of Painlevé's films expecting a dry documentary, but instead encountering a strange and poetic way of looking at the world.

New to these sort of guides, but I was hoping there'd be an index for artist appearances as performers, not just albums under their name. I'm sure it would have taken a fair chunk of pages, but in exchange some of the entries could have been less ... belabored.

Probably the first thing most of us do is look at the entries for our personal faves -- the entry for Blue Train says it's "an over-valued record" and goes on to put it down at length before mentioning that it was Coltrane's favorite recording. It makes me very suspicious that their "Core Collection" is going to bring out most of what I really want to listen to.

The definitive guide for Jazz. Their recommendations have always matched mine. Like the size of a paperback Bible on Jazz. Check it out and you'll want to have it for your jazz collection.

2 out of 5 stars Useful as a guide for two people only: The Authors!.......2006-08-06

Don't waste your bucks or quid on this weighty tome, use allmusic.com or iTunes instead. Due to the two author concept, this rather opinionated effort (and the authors must be commended for a very big effort) is nothing more than the jazz opinion of two guys. They show little empathy for musicians they don't care for, and omit many who they do not classify as "true jazz" (whatever that might be.) At least allmusic has a team of reviewers who are sympathetic to the musicians they happen to be writing about. What's more, allmusic doesn't take the slightly smarmy approach that these two do. Forget it.

              2 out of 5 stars just a few remarks.......2006-07-20

I have a couple different editions of the Penguin Jazz Guides, and while I don't have the Seventh Edition of the CD Guide, I feel I can say a few things in general.

The Good Things: Very informative. Filled with information. Tens of thousands of recordings, categorized alphabetically by thousands of artists, with catalogue numbers, labels, years, etc. There will be many people you have never heard of unless perhaps you are a decades-long serious devotee. Even then, I doubt anyone could ever be really familiar with all these musicians. A lot of info.

The Bad Things: Filled with information. As someone else astutely pointed out, I'm not sure for what exact purpose you could really use all this information. All you can do is look up a specific artist and see a listing of (usually all or almost all) their recorded works.

That's great, but then what? I myself am only a very casual and not-terribly-knowledgeable collector of jazz recordings, but I know that I am limited in what I can collect by what I can actually find. Therefore, it doesn't do me a lot of good to have a complete discography for, say, Carol Kidd. If I am interested in the complete works of Carol Kidd then I am probably already pretty familiar with her works. I would have to be if I was collecting her recordings in the year 2006. But I'm not a huge Carol Kidd fan.

Conversely, if I run into something I would want to add to my collection, like, say, a 1st-edition near-mint LP by Gil Evans from 1964, then I wouldn't need a guide to know that I want it.

I admit that's a petty gripe because the book still makes for excellent recreational skimming by nerds like me, but there is also the issue of critical judgement and omissions. For example, ever heard of Bobbie Previte, the obscure drummer? His complete works from the mid-80's are listed. Ever heard of Nina Simone, the famous torch singer and pianist? According to my 1998 edition of the Penguin Guide she was not a jazz artist (although Rosemary Clooney apparently was), and is not even mentioned anywhere. Vince Guaraldi and other similar West Coast/cool jazz artists are diminished or flat-out dismissed, upholding the longstanding tradition of New York snobbery in contemporary jazz criticism.

And don't even get me started on the typically snide and out-of-touch comments contained in the Jaco Pastorius entry, which border on outright defamation against Italians.

In the end, I would advise a slightly (or more) dedicated jazz fan to buy a good CHEAP used copy of this guide and see what you can squeeze out of it. You will learn something, but don't expect too much besides trivia and minutiae.

              4 out of 5 stars Marvellous Book.......2006-03-19

Delightfully encyclopedic - its commentary is at the same time historical, musical, and addictively readable. So far, their reccomendations have not steered me wrong, however, I would say that their broad tastes are not for everyone. They will equally rate questionably listenable free jazz with the most divinely inspired bebop, and they aren't consistent in describing the sound and styles of lesser known artists, which makes investing in any of these a little nerve-wracking.

Some have said this before, and I agree, that the book could strongly use a few appendices - an index (listing by albums, styles of jazz) and a short list of their favorite albums would save one time (instead of having to flip through 1500 pages).

It is the best book of its kind out there, though, and its entirely worth its cost in the money it will save you.

This has been very enlightning to look outside one's own generation. Awareness is half the battle. Excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars good info on generations in the workplace.......2006-07-14

This is probably your best bet for a book on generations in the workplace. It's not long on data, but it does apply knowledge about generations in a very useful way. It's not a deep treatment, but it gets the job done. A fairly quick read, and good if you just want to understand people of different ages in the workplace.

If you are interested in learning more about generations overall, and applying the knowledge yourself (easy to do), there's the classic (_Generations_ by Strauss & Howe, strong on theory and the overall picture, though outdated with its 1991 pub date) or the more recent _Generation Me_, with data on how the generations differ psychologically.

                  4 out of 5 stars All Business.......2004-11-12

I found this book to be very informative and readable. The book gives a number of good insights about the different values of four generations in the workplace today. There are lots of examples and solutions to making the workplace more productive and fun. Unfortunately, the book's focus is on business, making money and working together better. Guess that's what pays the bills. I guess the insights can help in relationships throughout society but for those who are looking for answers outside of business this might be a hard read to get through.

                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting observations........2003-02-10

"When Generations Collide" is a book that describes the clashes of the four generations with practical solutions. The book is separated into five sections:
Section I: Descriptions of the Generations
The book first describes the four generations (birth years): The Traditionalists (1900-1945), Baby Boomers (1946-1964), Generation Xers (1965-1980) and Millennial (1981-1999). The book also mentions the "Cusper" generation, whom are born five years into or at the end of a generation. The Cuspers are the bridge builders.

Section II: Putting the generations to work
In this section, the authors describe the generations' focus on career. In summary, Traditionalists build a legacy, Baby boomers build a stellar career, Gen X build a portable career and Millennial build parallel careers. The book describes the generation careers with explicit detail including how to reward the generations without offending the "generational culture". This section is interesting since it gives examples from companies that have built various career paths and reward programs for the four generations.

                  Section III: Hiring generations
In this section, the authors describe in detail how to hire generations. Since the values of the generations are different, company value propositions need to be just as various. These values are established with the help of the specific generations. The proposition should be put into action and modified as time passes. If the values do not represent the various generations then the company would have issues to retain talent.

Section IV: Retaining and managing the generations
Once you have hired the individuals the book describes, in great detail, how to manage and retain your talent using different methods of involvement. Retaining the talent needed is not easy. The book describes that it is not only up to your company but companies should learn to use their talent to keep talent. Example, part-time alumni traditionalist are helping Xers understand the longer term growth of the firm which in turn the firm will be rewarded by Xers not leaving in 6 months. As the book notes it, job changing for Traditionalist is a stigma, for Boomers is getting behind, for Xers is necessary and for Millennials is a way of life.

                  Section V: What's next?
This section was a six page book conclusion.

If you are thinking of issues that we deal with our bosses, parents, co-workers and others take into consideration their generation before taking action.

                  Have fun reading.

4 out of 5 stars Not Profound but Provocative.......2002-07-03

                  Review of When Generations Collide

The Book's Thesis: If you work with people from other generations, you need to understand that conflicting perspectives between the generations can generate workplace conflict.

Obviously, this is an old theme. There are plenty of quotable inter-generational digs and barbs recorded in the earliest writings of antiquity.

More recently, during my youth in the tumultuous late 1960s and early '70s, we spoke openly and frequently about the "generation gap."

This perennial topic has been treated seriously by credible writers in other business books over the past decade. (I have penned a few articles on it in recent years as well.)

Of the books on this now familiar theme, this one takes a less statistical and analytical approach in favor of a more anecdotal slant on the topic.

Lancaster, a Baby Boomer, and Stillman, a Gen Xer, are business partners who write in a chatty style. They lace their broad observations about generations with illustrations derived from their own personal lives. Often, they make their point by telling stories about the conflicts between the two of them---which they blame on their age difference.

And they never miss an opportunity to remind you that they speak and give seminars on this topic. While those frequent reminders border on annoying, the authors do not seem to be indulging in crass commercialism---search all you want and you won't find information in the book about contacting the author-consultants to purchase their services.

Instead, speechmaking (and speech coaching to the likes of pop business pontificator Harvey Mackay, who penned the book's anemic Foreword) seems to define the authors' rather limited frame of reference in the business world.

As other reviewers have noted, the authors' attention to detail, facts, and rigorous analysis have taken a back seat to their breezy narrative.

In an attempt to provide statistical data on generational differences, the authors point to results from an online survey they conducted. You don't have to be a career researcher or social scientist to recognize that such surveys are comprised of small, non-random, non-representative and therefore invalid samples. That is especially true when extrapolating tiny slivers of data to reach conclusions about an entire generation representing *tens of millions* of people!

Still, these flaws notwithstanding, this engaging, readable book makes some worthwhile observations about the rather amorphous and extremely broad topic of generational strife. Despite my reservations, I found myself highlighting pithy passages and dog-earring quite a few pages.

If you can look past the authors' indulgent style and occasional gaffs and lapses, "When Generations Collide" serves as an approachable and palatable overview of potential generational friction in the workplace---and wherever people of varying ages interact.
