Light BL with gorgeous art........2006-05-22

*A 5 volume series*
Even though DMP states it's Yaoi, this Manga IS NOT. It's light BL.
It may feature an all boys high school in Europe but there is no kissing or sex in this volume much like the others. Except volume one where there was a kiss between the main character; Georges and Robert. There is a lot of innuendo, hugging and very close friendships in the High School.
The main story to Volume 2 is that Georges (our little angel) meets Chris, a charity worker and Chris manages to suck Georges in to try and get Freddy's fathers donations. But the charity is abusing it's status and stealing money from people, but Georges can't accept the fact that a charity can be cruel. Thus he begins to understand the world a little more and the consolidation is left to Robert. Also a little story about Henri and Robert occurs, where Henri confronts Robert about his attitude toward Georges.
The main reason why I give this Manga such a high rating is because of the story and art. The art is absolutely gorgeous! And the storyline is going along smoothly - unlike some. There is a rising relationship between Robert and Georges, and how they are getting closer. Also you find out about Henri's crush on Georges that can never be and Erwin and Josh's relationship.

I liked this book because it's by Andrew Clements. I am Andrew Clements number one fan. I've read a lot of other Andrew Clement book before and " Things Hoped For" is one of his best.

It's about this girl named Gwen. She moves from West Virginia to New York to live with her grandfather. One day her grandpa left a message saying he went away,but carry on with your life. Gwen wants to know where he is. Does she figure it out?

I think everyone should read this book at least once because it's an awesome book.

Not as good as the first, but still worth the read.......2007-05-04

This is the follow up to the amazing novel, Things Not Seen. This book is not nearly as good as the first one, but is still definitely worth the read. It is about 17 year old Gwen Page, who is an aspiring classical violinist, living with her Grandfather in New York City. One day, her grandfather disappears, leaving behind only a very mysterious phone message. Gwen then meets Robert (Bobby) the protagonist from Things Not Seen, and together they unravel this mystery. This book has a good set up, but the way it ends is disappointing. The main character is also not very interesting. I liked the way it connects to Things Not Seen, and if you haven't read that, you definitely should. Andrew Clements writing style is flawless, and though the plot is a little disappointing, it's still definitely worth reading.

A difficult secret to keep.......2007-02-04

Andrew Clements' THINGS HOPED FOR tells of Gwen's father, who has vanished from their New York City home. He's left a message telling her nobody must know - but music student Gwen finds it a difficult secret to keep; particularly when snoopy family members and strangers keep trying to uncover the truth.

I hoped for better from this author.......2007-02-01

I have read and enjoyed many of the author's books, but was a little disappointed in this one. I liked the character, her talent and drive, and the mystery surrounding her grandfather. But after Robert from Things Not Seen was introduced, things took a turn and the story suffered. It took the storyline away from Gwen and back into Robert's storyline and problems. And why would the grandfather do what he did, I could see no logical reason for it. Anyway, I know I will still read any other book he comes out with, I just didn't care for the plot twists in this one.

Follow-Up to "Things Not Seen".......2006-12-16

"Things Hoped For" is a follow-up to Andrew Clements's amazing novel, "Things Not Seen." I won't say exactly how, or why, I'll let it be a surprise as to just how --- as it was for me.

If you haven't read "Things Not Seen," I recommend finding it and reading it before reading this book. It's a bit longer, but just as enjoyable, and you'll soon be done and ready to go onto this. This book can definitely be enjoyed without reading "Things Not Seen," but I highly recommend reading it.

"Things Hoped For" is about a girl who's approaching her final auditions for music school. She already has a lot to deal with in her life when her Grandpa drops a bombshell --- he's left the house that he's letting her stay in and he's left her a message asking her to watch over it without letting anyone know that he's gone. It's a lot to ask and the pressure starts to build, but then she discovers someone special and unique. He not only helps her out, but he also becomes a friend --- something that she hasn't made time for in her life recently.

For those who read "Things Not Seen," "Things Hoped For" is the sequel you've been hoping for. For those that haven't, now is the time to discover this series.

If Erma Bombeck had been a grandfather she would have written this terribly clever and witty book. I've recommended it to all my friends having children. The real scoop ooops "poop" by grandson, Max is hilarious. If there's a way to know what's going on inside a baby's brain, writer, Saul Turteltaub, did it. It starts with the writer positive he's not going to be one of those sloppy grandfathers insessantly talking about a two month old baby who does nothing by lay there...by the end he's showing pictures to complete strangers on the street. Very, very cute!

In the turbulent sixties, the provocative French film journal Cahiers du Cinema was at its most influential and controversial. The first successes of the New Wave by major Cahiers contributors such as Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer, and Claude Chabrol focused international attention on the revitalization of French cinema and its relation to film criticism; and in the early 1960s the journal's laudatory critiques of popular American movies were attaining the greatest notoriety.

Robert A. Lindquist was the inspiration I needed when at the age of 20 years old when I was breaking into the mobile DJ world. I met Robert at a trade show in Atlantic City and purchased Spinnin' 2000 from him. My copy is autographed!
Since then, I've opened my own DJ business, sold another, provided training and recruitment for the two largest DJ companies in NJ, wrote - self published - and successfully sold "Making Money As A Mobile Entertainer" a training course for mobile DJ/entertainers, and run a DJ related web site.

Mr. Linquist was a tremendous inspiration for all of this. Reading his book showed me that there are many avenues for Djs outside of merely being a DJ.

He starts at the very beginning--setting up the board--and takes the reader through his approach to every element of play. It's an approach that pays off, as his championship record shows. The book is rich with clear diagrams and explanations, with three sample games that illustrate his points well.

A fine book by an author who obviously knows the game. Has improved my game, but can't help the role of the dice. My wife beats me all the time. But after this book, not by as much.

A new player's view.......2004-07-24

I wanted to get into playing backgammon at some of the online sites, but I hadn't played in years. I figured I needed some help so went looking for a book on backgammon and more or less at random picked Backgammon for Winners by Bill Robertie. And it turned out to be a decent choice.

It's a fairly thin book, which I liked. I didn't want to spend 2 weeks reading about the history of the game (at least not right now). Robertie jumps right into the meat of the subject, first giving the rules and a bit of broad strategy as well as best opening moves for every possible first roll of the dice. But the bulk of the book is taken up with three different sample games, and Robertie analyzes each move of each game, giving lots of explanation for why something was a strong or poor move. While he suggests you set up a board and move the pieces yourself, there were enough illustrations that you don't have to do so (I didn't).

By the time you work through these three sample games you'll understand backgammon notation, the different phases/styles of a backgammon game, why control of certain points is more important than others, and you'll even see examples of when the 'rules of thumb' should be broken. He does a good job of urging you to go back and reread a section if its covering difficult material, keeping you from glossing over it with an "I'll figure this out later" shrug.

Overall, I'm thinking this is a good first backgammon book. Recommended.

Good quick introduction to aggressive Backgammon.......2003-01-10

I've been playing chess since I was a little kid, but a group of friends at the local coffeehouse started to play a lot of backgammon. So this book was a first attempt at seeing how the pros approach this dice-based game.

In short, the book is great if you want a quick read that outlines the best opening moves and gives you a feel for aggressive 'modern' backgammon. In addition to the rationale behind how to use opening dice rolls, the book gives you 3 sample games and lets you hear the pro's thoughts on possible moves. My favorite line is "He could play 14/20, moving the blot on the 14-point to safety, but this is a craven play, unworthy of a modern player." :) How could you not like such opinionated tutelage?? I could have used more exposition on why some seemingly valid plays (e.g. hitting an opponent's blot in your inner table even though its deep) are really less effective. Even better would be some statistical analysis showing why some moves make sense when looking at the odds, but I'm not sure there's such a book out there.

Typo Heaven.......2000-09-15

An interesting book for the semi-advanced player is destroyed by typo after typo, a fault that ultimately drives the reader mad. What's going on in the publishing world?

Good beginner book.......2000-04-12

This book is as good as any for the raw beginner. The great Robertie explains the rules of the game, basic objectives, and opening moves, and then takes you through three sample games. That's about it, and if you're an experienced player you won't learn anything from it you don't know already. On the plus side, Robertie's conversational style is more enjoyable than some of the older beginner books, and he tries to explain things that aren't obvious to the novice (for example, a 5-5 looks like a great roll here, here's why it's not). All in all, a short user-friendly guide for the novice.

If you are a basic customer service person, not much experience, it's a good guide. I was looking for more depth for some research I was doing. Not a bad book, it just did not fit my needs.

As someone who writes about customer service, I found this book very interesting. It's an excellent read for a customer service representative and I'd recommend companies getting the book for each of their employees. It covers some customer service basics, how to handle certain situations, and is really a great overview of what great customer service is and how to deliver it.

This is a great book for all customer sservice reps. Here is what I especially loved: I am not alone. Many people across America feel as I do. It makes me feel better about all the people I have to deal with!

Super Service is a great book for people who work on the front line like me. It is about not taking things personally and not being at the affect of the customer. When I give great customer service--I am the one who gets to feel good at the end of the day. The fact that the customer goes away feeling satisfied is just an added bonus. I've noticed that a lot of people in customer service positions act like they don't want to be there--like they are victims or something. Super Service reminds me that great service begins and ends with me. After all--if it's not about me--then who is it about?
