Lush, elegant art from Victorian England.......2000-06-06
This volume draws together some of the most remarkable paintings and sketches done by the Pre-Raphaelites during the mid-1800's. This movement, which focused on the appreciation of beauty through artistic interpretation of legend and literature, produced some of the most stunning works of art to date.
What I like about this book in particular, is that unlike many books, it does not neglect the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, brother of the poet Christina Rossetti. In my opinion, Dante (whose painting "Proserpine" appears on the cover of this book, is the heart and soul of the "Pre-Raphaelite Vision" and is too often left out. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.
A perfect romantic gift!.......2000-06-03
"Some were painted almost obsessively, and with the passing of time have come to represent an ideal beauty"
This tiny book is filled with works by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Arthur Hughes, Frederick Sandys, Edward Burne-Jones, William Holden Hunt, Albert Joseph Moore, and Eveyln De Morgan. In its pages you will find all the romantic, now 'posterized' images of this remarkable group of painters.
The paintings are interwoven with the beautiful poetry that inspired them and makes it a lovely and tender tribute to any woman. (or a not so shabby guide book for those poor souls out there that just don't know how to be romantic!)
Rossetti is a master of the misty eyed, Sandys finds that little resident saucy side that makes every woman human, and Burne-Jones seems to add an extra element of wisdom to the women that he paints.
These are the paintings that are beloved by so many - never offensive, always relaxing and full of brilliant color. Who could forget Moore's 'Midsummer' with its bright orange fabric against such a gentle sleeper? Or 'Love's Shadow' with that bright red hair? These are the only examples I can think of that use such bright color and still result in such soothing images.
I've yet to find a better collection of these beloved works, and the price and portability of this one can't be beat. Most of these works are from private collections or are in European museums so a lovely book like this makes them accessible to us all.
Book Description
The Pre-Raphaelites brought about a revolution in depicting landscape that was arguably as radical as anything achieved by their near contemporaries, the Impressionists. Deeply rooted as they were in both scientific and religious culture and inspired by the theories of John Ruskin, the Pre-Raphaelites experienced an exhilarating passion for the natural world that suffuses their works and animates their vision.
This authoritative and lavishly illustrated book, the first study of landscape in Pre-Raphaelite painting for many years, highlights an often overlooked aspect of the movement. Among the artists featured are John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, John Brett, George Price Boyce, William Davis, and Daniel Alexander Williamson. AUTHOR BIO: Allen Staley is professor emeritus of art history at Columbia University and the author of The Pre-Raphaelite Landscape. Christopher Newall, a writer and lecturer specializing in 19th-century British art, is the author of Victorian Watercolors.

Book Description
The Adventure, Romance & Mad Science continues as Agatha Heterodyne's damaged aircraft comes roughly to rest in the Wastelands. She encounters a traveling circus and proves her mettle by destroying a massive spider-clank as it attacks. Back at the airship city, a frustrated Baron Wulfenbach dispatches his son Gilgamesh and deposed pirate queen Bangaldesh DuPree to capture Agatha, whose very existence threatens the peace - but the cunning circus folk succeed in hiding Agatha, who quickly discovers she is only one of their many secrets. She begins warrior training with the circus's expert swordswoman Zeetha, meets a strange new breed of Jagermonster, and attracts unexpected attention in saving them from the grimmest of fates.

Cracking Electric Death Rays Are A Girl's Best Friend........2007-08-02
On the lam from Mad Baron Wulfenbach, Agatha's mini-zeppelin crashes in the remote wilderness. On foot & hungry, she & her companion, the genetically-engineered cat Krosp, locate a traveling circus, under attack by a robot war machine.
Can Agatha improvise a ray-cannon out of wrecked macchinery, that can take out the robot war machine?
Can Agatha escape the Baron's assault troopers?
Will the Baron's lovestruck son find her first?
And will the talking cat Krosp keep trying to stuff mice down Agatha's throat as field rations/bon-bons?
If you can stop laughing long enough, you'll find out. The humor/storyline here is well worth the effort.
Agatha and her Milieu.......2007-06-27
I came late to the Foglio's wbcomic "Girl Genius," and it took me awhile to get into the spirit of things, but I am hooked now, and following the adventures of Agatha and her friends are a great joy. Yes, she is drawn plump, and, yes, everything looks like it was invented by Jules Verne, but there is a happy quality to the whole thing. Gilgamesh, Agatha's lover (in the old-fashioned sense: he loves her, but has not made love to her) is quite likable, and even minor characters like Dupree Bangaladesh, the homicidal pirate queen are quite fun. I'm even beginning to like Baron Wulfenbach, the nominal villain. All in all, great fun. Recommended.
Brilliant and Fun.......2007-01-13
Phil and Kaja Foglio's characters are brilliant, exciting and generally a lot of fun to follow. The Girl Genius bug bit me in December and I'm now a very strong fan. Agatha labours to find her heritage as the sole heir to the family Hetrodyne, those with the greatest Spark for genius. She's clever and often displays a streak of mischief in creating her inventions, with an affinity for dingbots and a really good death ray. The characters who surround her range in personality, but all are capable of moments of light humour or devilish delight.
Errata.......2006-06-28
Note that this (excellent) book is shown with the wrong cover. See Kaja Foglio's livejournal for the correction.
On the Road With Agatha.......2006-05-02
When last we saw her, Agatha had just managed to escape from Castle Wulfenbach with the failed King of Cats Krosp. But no sooner does their escape begin than they crash into the wastelands. There they meet a lost boy and join up with a traveling Heterodyne show. But in typical Girl Genius fashion, things just keep happening to complicate things.
Destructive devices, a visit from the Baron, the return of Othar, demonic beasts, and mysterious travelers all manage to complicate matters. Amongst the jokes and action we also get a little more history about the Herterodynes and their impact on the world. We also learn a little more about what it takes to be a spark.
This volume collects the last four issues of the Girl Genius comic (issues 10-13) as well as the continuing story from the Girl Genius online comic. Like in earlier volumes this collection also contains a stand-alone adventure at the end. All in all 127 pages of comic and comedic genius.
Book Description
Straightforward and honest, Not Now, I'm Having a No Hair Day paints a realistic picture of what it was like for Christine Clifford to discover breast cancer, undergo surgery, and endure months of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Her moments of fear, frustration, embarrassment, love, and joy are captured playfully in 60 cartoons. Cancer patients and their families will readily enjoy a humorous look at a serious subject.
Customer Reviews:
So much fun.......2006-07-14
I married the author, not least of all because I told her just after I proposed that "I love your view of life."
She's taken death head on and turned it into life; she's found joy in sorrow and opportunity in adversity. If all you pick up from reading this book is that, it's a five--how can it not be?
Here's to someone who did more than survive; she saw how rich and meaningful life is, and how much there is that we can laugh at every day.
No Hair in Omaha.......2005-08-15
I'm so glad I ordered this book. It absolutely reflects so many of my own experiences with cancer treatment.
Made my mom smile.......2000-01-31
I gave this to my mom, she laughed and was able to identify with the book. I read it too and enjoyed it. I think it depends on where you are in your treatment. If you need to laugh and are around others who won't or don't know how too, then this is a refreshing book. Sometimes when familes are dealing with this disease, they are afraid to laugh. And to see my mom smile, during a time when she knew what the outcome was, well it made all the difference in the world. It is a short book.
Not Now...I'm Having a No Hair Day.......1999-12-27
Disappointed. I found more laughter in my own personal experience with cancer treatment and hair loss than I found in these pages. I laughed out loud once. I expected more.
In contrast I found another book: No More Bad Hair Days to be very wise AND very funny. Just the ticket!
Very funny, yet frank depiction of hair loss.......1999-10-10
Ms. Clifford captures the humor of the highly emotional experience of being treated for cancer. She focuses mostly on hair loss (hence the title), but also on radiation and chemo. Laughter is great medicine, so I suggest you add this book to the treatment regimine of any woman going through cancer treatment.

Book Description
Thinking Musically is the central volume in the Global Music Series. Designed for undergraduates and general readers with little or no background in music, it incorporates music from many diverse cultures--including the Americas, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Europe--and establishes the framework for exploring the practice of music around the world. It sets the stage for an array of case study volumes, each of which focuses on a single area of the world. Each case study uses the contemporary musical situation as a point of departure--covering historical information and traditions as they relate to the present--and comes with an audio CD of musical examples discussed in the text. The case studies can be used in any combination with Thinking Musically to provide a rich exploration of world musical cultures. Visit www.oup.com/us/globalmusic for a list of case studies in the series. The website also includes instructional materials to accompany each study. Thinking Musically discusses the importance of musical instruments, describing their significance in a culture's folklore, religion, and history. It explores fundamental elements of music--including rhythm, pitch in melodic and harmonic relationships, and form--and examines how they vary in different musical traditions. The text considers the effects of cultural influences such as gender and ethnicity on the perception, interpretation, and performance of music. It also looks at how the forces of nationalism, acculturation, and westernization can affect musical traditions. Many of the musical examples are coordinated with material in the case studies. Thinking Musically includes activities designed to build critical listening and individual study skills and is packaged with an 80-minute CD that features selections from a wide variety of musical cultures. Also available: Thinking Musically and Teaching Music Globally Package (2 books + CD; ISBN 0-19-517143-8) Thinking Musically is also available in a package with Teaching Music Globally, by Patricia Shehan Campbell, a second framing volume in the Global Music Series. Essential for anyone teaching beginning students about the world's musical cultures, Teaching Music Globally describes pedagogical techniques for classes from K-12 to university level and offers a wealth of learning experiences.

Customer Reviews:
Thinking musically the better book.......2007-05-12
The central books in the global music series which seeks to define various world music genres in terms of pitch, rhythm, instrumentation, form, etc. The first book, Thinking Musically, is excellent as are the individual region books. Teaching music, unfortunately, provides lessons plans the consist mostly of listening and looking at scores. Not as helpful or as immaginative as they could have been. Overall, however, this a great series for musicians, music educations and anyone interested in world music. Some familiarity with basic music theory and terminology is recommended.
Book Description
Noted opening theoreticians Krzysztof Panczyk and Jacek Ilczuk explain the crucial strategies and tactics of the Ruy Lopez Exchange. Using model games for both White and Black, the authors provide a thorough schooling in the key ideas of both the fashionable lines and the more offbeat variations.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource for intermediate to advanced chess players looking to strengthen their understanding of the game.......2005-09-12
International Chess Master Krzysztof Panczyk and e-mail World Championship semi-finalist Jacek Ilczuk present Ruy Lopez Exchange, an in-depth scrutiny of the Ruy Lopez Exchange (or Spanish Exchange), an oft-used opening among Grandmasters and leisure players alike. A wealth of diagrams and sample games thoroughly explore the possibilities of this opening, how to strengthen it or counter it, as well as a discussion of its variants. Like its many companion volumes published by Everyman Chess, Ruy Lopez Exchange is an excellent resource for intermediate to advanced chess players looking to strengthen their understanding of the game.
A good recent book about the Ruy Lopez Exchange.......2005-09-05
Chess players who open with 1 e4 have to choose what to play after 1...e5. The most popular choice is 2 Nf3. Black's most popular reply is 2...Nc6. And the most popular choice for White at this point is 3 Bb5, the Ruy Lopez. Black's most popular choice now is 3...a6. Now what?
Well, I think it is just fine to retreat that White Bishop to a4. That's the most popular move. But Black has plenty of choices at this point. Maybe you'll see a deferred Steinitz variation. Or an Open Lopez. Or a Closed Ruy, such as the Chigorin, the Breyer, the Smyslov, or the Zaitsev. Or even a sideline such as the Archangelsk or the Moeller. Or maybe the well-known Marshall (unless you play an anti-Marshall).
Or maybe you won't see any of them. You can chop down that Black Knight now. With the Exchange Variation. And try heading for a pleasant endgame in which, if you win, it will seem like Black never had a chance.
This book shows all the important lines in the Exchange variation. It has 74 complete and annotated games as examples. And 21 of those games are from the years 2001 to 2004.
If you want to learn this opening for White, there are some lines you will need to know. The main ones, after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Bxc6 dxc6 5 0-0 are:
5...Be6 6 Nxe5 Qd4 7 Nf3 Qxe4 8 Ng5
5...Qf6 6 d4 exd4 7 Bg5
5...Qe7 6 d4 exd4, where you have to decide between 7 Qxd4 and 7 Nxd4
5...Be7 where you must choose between 6 Nxe5 and 6 d3
5...Ne7 6 Nxe5 Qd4 7 Qh5
5...Bd6 6 d4 exd4 7 Qxd4
5...Bg4 6 h3 h5 7 d3 Qf6 where you must choose between 8 Be3 and 8 Nbd2
5...Qd6 6 Na3 Be6 7 Qe2 f6 8 Rd1
5...Qd6 6 Na3 b5 7 c3 c5 8 Nc2 Bb7 9 Re1
5...f6 6 d4 exd4 7 Nxd4 c5 8 Nb3 Qxd1 9 Rxd1 Bg4 10 f3
5...f6 6 d4 Bg4 7 dxe5 Qxd1 8 Rxd1 fxe5 9 Nbd2 0-0-0 10 Re1
The book also mentions moves other than 5 0-0 for White, and it even mentions 4...bxc6 for Black.
The fundamental strategic idea behind this opening for White is to get all the pieces off the board somehow and win the resulting endgame by getting a passed pawn on the Kingside. Black is generally happy to exchange the Queens. But Black will be very slow to exchange anything else, and will fight hard to keep her Bishop pair.
I'll give an example of this opening from one of my own games, one I remember quite well:
1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Bxc6 dxc6 5 0-0 Bg4 6 h3 h5 7 d3 (obviously, White can't take the Bishop without losing her Knight or getting mated) 7...Qf6 8 Be3 Bxf3 9 Qxf3 Qxf3 (Black may have messed up White's pawn structure and removed the Queens, but at the cost of the Bishop pair) 10 gxf3 g6 (this is not good: Black has to try to stop White from getting in f4; in addition, the Black Knight may belong on g6) 11 f4 Bg7 12 fxe5 Bxe5 13 c3 0-0-0 14 d4 Bg7 15 Nd2 Nf6 16 f3 Bh6 17 Kf2 Bxe3+ 18 Kxe3 Rhe8 19 c4 Nh7 20 Rg1 Nf8 21 Rad1 Ne6 22 Nb3 b6 23 d5 cxd5 24 cxd5 Ng7 25 Kf4 Rd7 26 Nd4 Red8 27 Rc1 Rd6 28 Nc6 R8d7 29 Rg2 Rf6+ 30 Ke3 Ne8
See how easy that was? White has practically effortlessly obtained what ought to be a winning position. Black hasn't had a chance to do anything. Of course, any position can be compromised. And White proved it:
31 Kd4? (any reasonable move wins, and 31 e5 may be best) Rxf3 32 Ne5?? (White was already worse, but this hangs a Rook to 32...c5+). Of course, the fact that White made these awful errors will be a secret just among us.
I recommend this book.
Book Description
Adam Kahane spent years working in the world's hotspots, and came away with a new understanding of how to resolve conflict in a way that seems reasonable - and doable - to all parties. The result is Solving Tough Problems. Written in a relaxed, persuasive style, this is not a "how-to" book with glib answers, but rather, a very personal story of the author's progress from a young "expert" convinced of the need to provide cold, "correct" answers to an effective facilitator of positive change - by learning how to create environments that enable new ideas and creative solutions to emerge. The book explores the connection between individual learning and institutional change, and how leaders can move beyond politeness and formal statements, beyond routine debate and defensiveness, toward deeper and more productive dialogue. Both tough and inspiring, the book explores models, technologies, and examples that foster and facilitate "dialogues of the heart."
Customer Reviews:
Listening and generative dialogue.......2006-08-14
Adam Kahane (2004) said that a friend of his told him that the old "1960s slogan `If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem' actually misses the most important about effecting change. The slogan should be, he said, `If you're not part of the problem, you can't be part of the solution.' If we cannot see how what we are doing or not doing is contributing to things being the way that they are, then logically we have no basis at all, zero leverage, for changing the ways things are--except from the outside, by persuasion or force" (pp. 83-84).
Any problem is part of a system, in other words, and if we are experiencing the problem, then we must, by definition, be a part of the problem. This book explores this concept and provides many tools and examples to help resolve conflict through deep listening and generative dialogue.
Enables deeper connections across communities.......2006-07-11
Mr. Kahane's book is the tip of the iceberg - a great start for someone looking for reflective practice that provides the skills and methods for addressing difficult challenges - individually and organizationally. The perspectives in Solving Tough Problems are from the heart, and present a valuable contribution to the growing awareness of how social technologies can provide containers for creating new realities...definitely recommended!
Jerry's review on Solving Tough Problems.......2006-03-17
At last! An easy to read book true to Bohm's vision of dialogue that will begin moving the subject from an esoteric phenomenon to a practice attainable by many. This book should not be considered as a primer on dialogue that could replace works such as "On Dialogue" or "dialogue, the art and practice of thinking together", rather it presents the author's experience in practical application of many of the concepts and principles discussed in those earlier works.
Not sure what I was expecting .......2005-12-31
I was expecting much more from this book,at times it seemed to be the author's bio instead of giving/sharing the best practices of how to go through an approach in solving difficult issues.
Building bridges.......2005-08-12
In a world beset by problems, this book offers real hope. Adam Kahane shares the techniques he has used in many of the world's trouble spots to bridge differences, establish a genuine conversation among adversaries, and create a positive future. This is not an academic book. It's based on real experience. Wherever we are called to end conflict, heal differences, and build collaboration we can learn from its lessons.
