Book Description
First published in 1986 to wide critical accalaim, The Sexual Perspective broke new ground by bringing together and discussing the painting, sculpture and photography of artist who were lesbian/gay/queer/bisexual. The lavishingly and seductively illustrated new edition examines the increased lesbian visibility within the visual arts as well as artists' responses to the AIDS epidemic. Emmanuel Cooper places the art in its artistic, social and legal contexts, making it an impressively vital contribution to current debates about art, gender, identity and sexuality.

As far as text books go...!.......2000-06-02
If you're ever going to buy a book just for the pictures, look no further. Not only does "The Sexual Perspective" provide an open and thorough history of homoerotic art of the last few centuries, but it continues to fascinate the reader with alternative views of conventional and popular art. As for the pictures, it's certainly not porn, but I'd advise you to keep it on the top shelf of the bookcase. This is not for grade-school eyes. As far as textbook-style reads go, it's definitely a keeper.

Applause.......2005-10-02
I am much more fond of this book than the first. I found the Domonique story of the first book to be sketchy. Lots of piecework, almost as if pages were missing-with all of the nightmare and none of the fairytale promised. I do like the other tales in the first collection, but overall I feel that Beautiful Beasts is when our good author truly got into the swing of things, with the tales being fanciful and unexpected, heartwarming...but...well...beastly! The stories flowed well, without even a hint of being forced, were well written, well illustrated, and both nightmare- and fairytale-like. Overall the book also has a much better theme than the last and I fully commend Serena and FSc on a job well done, a book both great and beautiful like the beasts inside.
Sequels..........2005-08-13
I'll get straight to the point. Nightmares and Fairytales "Beautiful Beasts" may only be better than the first book, "Once Upon A Time" when it comes to the title. Simply, there is a feeling that the stories don't really belong as a separate volume-it's more like the author took the best of all the stories and put it in the first book and then bumped off the rest to second. Reading it through, I felt like Sereno Valentino gave up on writing clever dialogue and fascinating plotlines, and instead relied on mildly surprising conclusions after spiels of stuff just chugging along. The Fairytales didn't seem to depart from the originals enough, the original stories weren't as compelling as the story of Dominque and Morgan.
Then there's the artwork- beautiful, of course. Just like the first book. And therein lies the problem. Though FsC's style itself is shockingly unique, the best thing about it in the first book was that there were subtle differences depending on the story being told. (Notably, Snow White) There isn't much of that here, beautiful as the drawings are. And the charming details in the background (like chubby bunnies cluttering the panels) seem to have dissappeared altogether. The artwork reminds you of the first book too much, but because the costumes and varied beauties delighted me in the first book, in the second they aren't a novelty anymore.
But enough about comparisons. Because judging by itself, Beautiful Beasts is a wonderful book. The best story could be the one about the flapper, and the time period grabs you through Fsc's clothing design and Valentino's slang.(Same for "A Woman Possessed", which could be in the 60's) The artwork lives as a hybrid of horror and cuteness, which probably is a good way to describe the stories. They're definitely worth reading, as you'll never be bored; they even give you some puzzles to decide for yourself. Monsters, beauties, spirits and magic abound in these stories and they beckon to you like a plea. I didn't mean to discourage anyone from reading the book, as it is an excellent one-it might just be better to read this one first before "Once upon a time" so you don't get a anticlimatic feeling.(There isn't a chronological order to the stories, with the exception of Gwen, and it might be fun to regard her first story as a prequel) I very much encourage buying this book, because it is completely worth it, though not as great as the first.
Book Description
The number of children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD has skyrocketed, along with prescriptions for Ritalin and other powerful amphetamine drugs to treat these problem children. This pharmaceutical answer to a behavioral disorder is one of the most controversial subjects in parenting today, and Dr. David Stein offers parents a safe, foolproof alternative.Challenging the disease theories of ADD/ADHD, Stein discusses the conditions in modern society and the American family that cause so many children to hate schoolwork and behave disrespectfully to all authority figures. Rejecting the pill solution, he presents a truly effective parent training program called the Caregivers' Skills Program that helps children learn appropriate behavioral and cognitive skills permanently, without drug therapy. Parents are trained to teach their children to love reading and learning, and to respect authority at home and at school. Stein presents case studies from his own highly successful practice that demonstrate the remarkably effective CSP that can help parents, educators, physicians and therapists treat today's problem children.

Life altering.......2006-10-10
Every parent should read this book. The author points out how societal changes have impacted our kids, i.e. TV, working moms and dads. We all need to reflect on these issues and how they affect our kids. I took my daughter off her medication, turned off the TV on school nights, and used his discipline method. She's doing fine in school and is listening much better.
life changing.......2006-03-24
This book changed our family. If you're willing to work hard, change as a parent, and truly see the changes you want in your family, this is the book for you. It's extremely practical and easy to use.
Drug Free Behavior Modification Works!!!!!!.......2006-03-16
What an amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!! My life and my child's behavior has changed so dramatically!! The book states that you will see results in 2 weeks, we saw results in one!!! It is hard work to stick with this program but if you do the results are amazing!!! There is so much less yelling and nagging and reminding in our home. There is actually peace. Once I did the research about the commonly used ADHD drugs and there potential side effects I was mortified and resolved to find a drug free way to help my four year old before she starts kindergarten this fall. Things are not perfect but there is such a dramatic change that even her preschool teachers are asking me what I did to bring about this change. DO THE RESEARCH ABOUT DRUGS!!!!!!!!! IN MY OPINION THEY SHOULD BE USED ONLY IN THE MOST EXTREME OF CIRCUMSTANCES! Try this first. If you can stick with it it works. Sometimes its hard. I even had to put up a "How to to discipline my daughter" reminder on the refridgertor to remind me not to go back to the old ways. But if I stick to it, it really works. To be honest I did not really enjoy my child very much before, She was so hyper and unfocused and didnt seem to listen to anything anyone said. We had tried everything. I read several other books, gave her time outs, took toys and privaledges away, sent her to bed early and about everything else I could think of and it never phased her. I almost gave up and figured and ADHD child really couldnt control herself and this was just the way things were going to be. I had nightmares of her entering kindergarten and the teachers calling every day to complain about what a disruptive and uncontrollable child she was. Now we speak. Her self confidence has increased and she is actually cute again. She is proud of herself and her behavior. Thank you to the author for literally changing my and her life. I STRONGLY URGE ALL PARENTS TO GIVE IT A TRY!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE? IF YOU WERE LIKE ME YOU TRIED EVERYTING ELSE ALREADY.
Needed for some parents, but..........2005-02-19
"If you're going to err then err on the side of toughness"(p166)
"Do not give warning"
Have you ever known a really hyper and misbehaving child who you thought just needed a little bit of discipline in his/her life? This is the book for them. I would not, however, recommend this book to 95% of parents whose children have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.
When I read this book, it scared me. The kind of "parenting" described done to a child with ADHD is abusive, and leads only to frustration, anger, rage and despair, and possibly eventually to life long trauma. How do I know? I have ADD, and so did my brother. No, I am not taking medication. Any medication. And my father believed in the kind of methods described in this book. My ADD has only led me to have trouble in school, and daydream constantly, but my brother who had childhood ADD was not so lucky.
Every day, for twelve long years, my father faithfully followed the methods described in this book, with my brother. Extremely smart and argumentative, my brother could be a terror, and was. He "recovered" at puberty like a third of children with ADHD, and luckily has no long term mental damage from the methods supported in this book. But I do. Almost every day I fled outside, to my room, to the neighbors, anywhere, because of the screams of my brother. Even at age 10, when he was given a "time-out", he really did not understand what he had done. The spankings, the immediate, no excuses, no bargaining, no reasoning attitude could of destroyed him. The house would be filled with screams, pleas, wails, that I was helpless to stop, not from physical but from mental abuse. To my brother, he would at any point be snatched away to be padlocked in a room for no apparent reason, even spanked. He had ADD, and it did not work. Period.
ADD is not a disease; it's just a different way that a human brain can work.
There are lots of methods of dealing with ADD without medication then the ones in this book. If you want to treat a child with ADHD without using medication, get another book about it. It might work, and at least it won't be abusive. If your child does not have ADHD, this book is for you. It really does work, just not for kids with ADD. This book is also not for those who do not believe in spanking kids nine times a day.
Dr. Stein's Caregiver Skills Program Works.......2003-11-26
My wife and I read Dr. Stein's books outlining his CSP program because our 8 year old son had a number of behavioral issues, at home and at school, that made some of his teachers ask us if we knew about ADHD. Well, I did, as I took a PhD in psychology from Wisconsin in 1988, and what I knew was that it didn't exist except as a label for a complex of recalcitrant, noncompliant behaviors and a low tolerance for frustration. I also knew that use of psychoactive stimulants, such as Ritalin, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, is especially inappropriate for children as they are very likely to permanently change the structure of the brain, lead to depression and other real diseases, and eliminate any valid basis for the child to experience true self efficacy and pride, not to mention genuine higher order creative thought. So, we read Dr. Stein's books and began applying the techniques with our son. We were astonished at how quickly our child progressed! The dawdling in the morning, frequent emotional outbursts, refusals to comply with directives to do whatever - all these - declined dramatically. Were they completely eliminated? Well, did I say he was 8 years old? If you want to get a true scientific picture about the whole ADHD fiasco, and you also have a child who you desperately want to help and not inadvertently hurt, then I strongly recommend that you start with this and Dr. Stein's other related books, then read Peter Breggin's "Talking Back to Ritalin." Dr. Breggin, an MD and psychiatrist, provides compelling proof not only that ADHD doesn't exist, but that stimulant drugs like Ritalin cause serious physical and psychological harm, and that an extremely powerful industry works hard to perpetuate the mythology of ADHD. Some of the other reviewers here need to read these books, and actually try the CSP program, which is an effective method for addressing the difficult motivational (aka "attentional") problems that many pefectly normal children face.

Only once in cinema history have imported films dominated the American market: during the nickelodeon era in the early years of the twentieth century, when the Pathé company's "Red Rooster" films could be found "everywhere." Through extensive original research, Richard Abel demonstrates how crucial French films were in making "going to the movies" popular in the United States, first in vaudeville houses and then in nickelodeons.
Abel then deftly exposes the consequences of that popularity. He shows how, in the midst of fears about mass immigration and concern that women and children (many of them immigrants) were the principal audience for moving pictures, the nickelodeon became a contested site of Americanization. Pathé's Red Rooster films came to be defined as dangerously "foreign" and "alien" and even "feminine" (especially in relation to "American" subjects like westerns). Their impact was thwarted, and they were nearly excluded from the market, all in order to ensure that the American cinema would be truly American.
The Red Rooster Scare offers a revealing and readable cultural history of American cinema's nationalization, by one of the most distinguished historians of early cinema.
Book Description
For over forty years Iannis Xenakis has been one of the major figures in contemporary music. In all that time, there has not been a study of his music published in English. This volume leads the reader along the trajectory of Xenakis's compositional development, presenting the works together with the technical and conceptual innovations he has introduced along the way. Particular works are examined in greater detail as signposts marking new stages in the composer's creative journey, from the early, unpublished works to the breakthrough pieces Metastasis and Pithoprakta, through the oft-discussed decade of formalization to the evolving styles of the succeeding three decades.
Harley approaches the music from the point of view of a musician; his thesis rests upon the conviction that Xenakis's theoretical formulations can be explained and understood without recourse to complicated mathematics. This "scientific" feature of the composer's own explications of his work has baffled and often alienated many who have responded strongly to the music. The book also includes an up-to-date bibliography, discography, and a list of works.

The London System is a perennial favourite of club players, as it is a very sound and solid system with a real practical sting. The authors of this new book seek to maximize this sting in two principal ways. Firstly, by explaining in detail the typical plans for White, they help readers to make the most of their chances, whether they are based on a kingside attack, queenside penetration, central play, or transition to a favourable endgame. Secondly, they advocate some subtle move-orders that limit Black's options, and give White possibilities to change the nature of the game and go straight for the kill if Black responds casually or inappropriately. These move-orders have been tested successfully by co-author Kovacevic at grandmaster level, and much of the analysis presented here is of totally new variations, and is previously unpublished. Covers all responses to 1 d4 against which White can use the London System.

Best London System Publication.......2007-08-09
I've been playing the London as a complete repertoire for White for almost 2 years now. The is perhaps the only book a tournament player needs on the London and I haven't been this excited about a chess book in quite some time. Most opening books (in my view) contain WAY too many variations, annoying sidelines, and simply do a poor job of explaining concepts in a digestible fashion. This book is different. It starts out with a brief but clear explanation of the opening. Then it has 30 annotated London games where White won. This is the section I'm reading now and it's outstanding. There's plenty of clear prose to explain the ideas and pretty much all of Black's replies are covered. Furthermore, most of the games are from non-GMs, giving realistic positions that you will see in actual tournament play. That's a crucial point in my view.
The second part of the book is the "analytical section." Here, there are lots of variations and sidelines that I typically find laborious, but it doesn't matter. After skimming this section, I feel you can play over the main lines, and just look at the variations as needed. Looking at the 30 annotated games alone should help tremendously. I'm halfway through them and my copy is already highlighted and dogeared a great deal! If you play the London, this book is worth it's weight in gold.
This is a good book on this system.......2007-08-09
I have added the London System to my opening repertoire because I want to use it as a surprise weapon. If I know my opponent plays a nice line vs my other white opening system, (the English). I can play this as a change of pace.
Even if you are an 1.e4 player, you can take up the London as a change of pace. There are some basic positional plans in the London and this book covers them. It is not the strongest opening for white, otherwise you would have Super GMs playing it all the time. But it is not as bad as it's reputation. So if you want to play the London this is the book to get!
Best on the London.......2007-07-15
My criteria for recommending or not recommending a books is rather simple. I ask myself would I replace this book if I should lose it. The answer to this book is a definite yes. I currently own 3 books on the London System and find this one to be the most informative. In their book the authors treat the London much like the Colle except white has the problem of his queens bishop solved. The second player really has nothing to fear from this system unless he allows white to completely dominate the diagonal from f4 to b7 uncontested. Once black has eliminated the troublesome bishop blacks game is pretty much straight forward. Whites game plan usually involves getting a quick kingside attack going before black can counter on the queenside. Its a good opening for white but does incur the risk of leaving the queenside vulnerable. I recommend this book highly, mostly for the class c player.
A pleasant suprise.......2006-12-04
I must agree with other fellow reviewers on this one. The book about London is truly excellent book. Young Sverre Johnsen is gifted explainator and, I could say very good narrator of whites discussed strategies, and GM Kovacevic had been a guarantee of line viability and profound knowlege of the opening as its greatist practisioner in last 4 decades of playing it. I myself had been an avid spectator at Solin 2001 tournament (I live in Split which is 6 km apart) where he played a game Kovacevic-Kozul (Kozul is current european chess champion for 2006) and he crushed Zdenko Kozul with 2.Lf4 in under 30 moves (i think).
I reccomend warmly this book, and it may especially be good to black french players because of its familiar pawn structures.
P.S. If u dont know the caliber of Vlado (Vlatko) Kovacevic, just watch his game vs Bobby Fischer at Zagreb 1971, where he beats Bobby with french defence. It was a shocker that year.
The best repertoire book ever!.......2006-10-26
I have to admit, that I have never played the London system before buying this book. This is the book I don't want my opponents to read. This book consists of two sections. The first one contains 30 games where white is using the London system. I can see that some claims that it is illogical that in all of the 30 games, white is winning. My friends, this is not a repertoire book written for black side, but for the white side. Each game is ended with a summary lesson. It simply describes what is best for white. The second part of the book is the analytic section. The analysis of each variation is described easy, clear and not to deep. That's why I think it is brilliant to split the analytic section and the games section. I would like to se more repertoire books like this one. "Win with the London system" should be a part of every players white repertoire, especially for the "1.d4 player".

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BUSINESSWEEK, USA TODAY, AND WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN STOCKS!
Simple-to-follow strategies for making--and keeping--profits in today's perilous stock market
More than 80 million investors lost 50 to 80 percent of their savings in the recent stock market crash. Investor's Business Daily publisher William J. O'Neil, however, was one of the first to see--and warn investors about--the dangers inherent in what had been, up to that point, a historic bull market run. Those who followed his counsel were able to sidestep devastating losses and emerge with their sizable bull market profits largely intact.
In The Successful Investor, O'Neil steps up to tell all investors how they can make money and, more important, avoid losses in up markets, down markets, and everything in between. Showing how mistakes made in the recent market collapse were amazingly similar to those made in previous down cycles, O'Neil reveals simple steps investors can follow to avoid costly mistakes and:
- Buy only the best stocks at only the best times
- Follow a market-tested 3-to-1 Profit-and-Loss Percentage Plan
- Know when to sell for the biggest possible profit
- Recognize chart patterns that presage enormous market moves
- Manage a portfolio over time to maximize its returns
William O'Neil has succeeded in virtually every market environment by following a stable, nonemotional investment plan. In his latest book, O'Neil explains how anyone can follow that plan to become a profitable long-term investor, regardless of market tides or turns.
The Successful Investor will bring reason and welcome relief to all investors buffeted and bewildered by the perils and uncertainty of today's stock market.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding investment/trading book........2007-05-20
William O' Neal has done an excellent job laying out for investors and stock traders the 5 steps to take for outstanding results. I have read Oneal's other books but this one really laid out his strategies in a very easy to understand format. Here are the 5 steps he puts forth:
#1 Which way is the general market going? Only invest in bull markets, if the market is continually going down and has rallies that fail and fall again into lows. Stay away and safely in cash. Wait to enter when the market is clearly in an uptrend.
#2 Use a simple 3 to 1 profit and loss percentage plan. By setting a 7% stop loss on all stocks, and capturing a 20% gain when you are right, you can be right on 33% of your stock picks and still be a profitable investor/trader. Of course this is the worst case scenario. The important thing is taking losses quickly and letting profits run to a reasonable place and then take them.
#3 How to buy the very best stocks at the very best times. Buy stocks using the CAN-SLIM method for the fundamental value. (With current and 5 year earnings increases being the #1 measurement of valuation). Then buy them after they have reached there 52 week high, pulled back and resumed upwards after coming off new support levels.(Cup and handle chart pattern).
#4 When to nail down your big profit. Sell a stock that has run up to a ridiculous price while it is still heading up. Do not try to call the top, these stocks pull back tremendously when they run out of buyers. The signs to sell include when it closes at the low for the day or fails to make new highs for a few days. (Railroad tracks on a chart).
#5 Managing your portfolio for maximum gains and minimum losses. When it is time to realign your portfolio sell your losers and keep your winners. Diversifying is for people who do not know what they are doing, successful investors buy 4 to 10 stocks they are experts on and watch them closely. Only add a new one after you sell your biggest loser. Never buy more of a stock that is going down only increase position sizes on winners. Only buy the best stocks in an industry, stay away from stocks under $15 to $20 a share.
Excellent book that belongs in every investors/traders library. William O'Neal belongs with other legendary traders he has done a great job of building on what others have learned. I predict it will be a classic one day.
John's Review.......2007-04-11
I believe every investor ought to read this book before putting any money in the market. If O'Neil's CANSLIM system is followed, it is IMPOSSIBLE to to lose money in the stock market!
Horrible.......2007-01-25
I knew a little bit about charts going into reading this book, and good thing I did, or you would be completely lost.
He has some wacky theories that I guess work for him, but when I read that he only recommends using a Market Order instead of a Limit order, I put the book down and quit reading.
Good book for those who watch the market daily.......2007-01-04
This is an especially helpful book if you are the kind of investor who spends at least 1 - 3 hours each day tracking the market. The author provides sound strategies for taking the emotion out of investing. But if you are an investor who prefers mutual funds, or prefers to have an investment counselor or broker guide your investments while you do other things, then this book is not for you.
Repetition of previous book.......2006-12-25
Much of the material in this book (2003) seems to be a repetition of the previous book titled "How To Make Money In Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times or Bad, 3rd Edition" (2002). It is hard to believe that so much changed in a year that the author needed to write a completely new book.
The section on pattern faults in Step 3 is sometimes vague and it is not always clear whether the fault being discussed applies to a specific pattern or to all patterns in general.
In his earlier book (How to Make Money in Stocks, 2002 edition, page 115) the author recommended that individual investors should not own more than 6-7 stocks. But in this book (page 98) he talks casually about owning up to 10 stocks. So, which one is correct; 6-7 or 10?
