Book Description
A celebration and preservation of the remarkable art collection of one man.
Art collector Glen S. Foster developed a consummate eye, combining a yachtsman's experience on the water with the instincts of an art connoisseur. Before its breakup upon his death in 1999, Foster's collection of historic American and British yachting and marine art was regarded as one of the finest in the country, and established new auction records when a portion was sold in 2002. Here for the first time is a glimpse of the collection, with descriptions contributed by some of the best historians of marine art today. Over eighty pieces by such artists as J. E. Buttersworth, Frederic Schiller Cozzens, Fitz Hugh Lane, Robert Salmon, E. T. Baker, and others are shown in beautifully reproduced full-color plates with descriptions relating to the scene or race depicted and notes on the artist and medium. In the annals of marine art it is rare to find such a powerful and comprehensive collection. 95 color plates.

Bonanza!.......2006-11-10
A very nice book on an astonishing collection of maritime paintings, well reproduced and carefully explained. There should be many other publications on such a matter made like this one. It is rich of information, clear in the description and bright in the illustration. My compliments to the publisher and to Amazon!
Beautiful Book Beautifully Written.......2005-12-25
Some books are simply picture books. Not this. I want to applaud the quality of writing as well as the quality of the prints. Each painting in this book is accompanied by a super description of what is going on in the painting and why the painting is important and why the artist might have chosen the subject. These are not just paintings of ships, these are the moments in maritime history that shaped how we see ships, and ourselves. The authors did a great job.
My favorite book in this category is "A Maritime Album: 100 Photographs and Their Stories" and so when I saw "The Yachtsman's Eye" I was struck by the similarity.
Beautiful Set of Paintings, Now Broken Up.......2005-09-11
A successful stock trader, Glen S. Foster was also a champion yacht racer and for many years a major collector of maritime paintings. Most of his paintings were of yachts as opposed to military or other subjects.
As might be expected the various America's Cup boats are prominent in this collection. Mr. Foster was a member of the New York Yacht Club so his interest in the America's Cup boats was not just incidental. As a yachtsman himself, he had frequented the waters where the race had been held and could recognize a true rendition of the race.
This book contains 95 color plates. Each plate has a history and description written by Alan Granby. Dr. Granby is the owner of Hyland Granby Antiques which specializes in maritime antiquities and marine art. He was sponsored as a member of the New York Yacht Club by Glen Foster, and served with him on the Fine Arts Committee.
The collection of paintings represented by this book was sold at auction after Mr. Foster's death so can no longer be seen as a collection anywhere but in this book.

How to Paint with a Knife.......2000-03-25
Coulton Waugh's book is out of print, but available through used book stores.
Any knife painter who loves colour straight from the tube will benefit by studying Coulton's exuberant paintings. His book not only contains over 220 black and white illustrations, it also has 16 full colour plates. Coulton offers 'an enormous range of knife painting techniques', with step by step demos. His discussion of colour is second to none. As an oil painter, I have found his book to be the single most valuable work I've ever read.
His beautiful, powerful knife paintings illuminate the book, as does his warm, intelligent narrative. I love this man.
He was born in Cornwall, England, in 1896 and later made his home in Newburgh, New York. His work is in collections in Syracuse University, the University of Wichita, the Cooperstown Art Association, the Toledo Museum, and in private collections all over the U.S.
Nothing reveals the man and the artist more than this quote from his book, with reference to Egyptian Turquoise: "I have certain still lifes with backgrounds of this colour which I love so much I often just walk around the studio, carrying them."
Coulton Waugh's books should definitely not be out of print. I hope Watson-Guptill Publications will consider reprinting them.

Anyone who has a pet or even knows one will find Get Fuzzy an astutely witty take on relationships between the species.

A Get Fuzzy Reading Guide.......2007-08-11
I won't go into how fantastic this comic strip is, but it is easily my favorite comic strip of all time. :)
For the uninitiated, there are 6 collections so far and three treasuries. The seventh collection is not yet released.
Please keep in mind that each treasury is two collections put together, so as far as I know the treasuries are the same as two of the collections, except I believe the treasuries have the Sunday comics in color while the collections have them in black and white.
In chronological order, the collections are:
1. The Dog is Not a Toy: House Rule #4
2. Fuzzy Logic: Get Fuzzy 2
3. The Get Fuzzy Experience
4. Blueprint for Disaster
5. Say Cheesy: A Get Fuzzy Collection 5
6. Scrum Bums
7. I'm Ready for My Movie Contract: A Get Fuzzy Collection (not yet released)
The treasuries are:
1. Groovitude (encompassing collections 1 and 2).
2. Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun (encompassing collections 3 and 4).
3. Loserpalooza (encompassing collections 5 and 6).
These comics are beyond hilarious, and I would highly recommend them to pet lovers/haters of all ages. :)
Made Me laugh.......2007-05-15
I liked reading the early stuff, as well as the new stuff. The book is short (as are all comic collections) and I read it in a day, but I just couldn't put it down. The only complant I have is, they should be numbered so you can get them in order, but you can take the time to figure it out by date, thats no problem!
Played For a Fool.......2006-06-30
Rob Wilco is an unappealing cigarette nosed, cigarette faced idiot who lives with a talking bad cat named Bucky and a sweet, not too sharp Sharpei-Lab mix named Satchel. Rob is always played for a fool by his bad cat.
The guy isn't much, but at least his pets talk to him. Oh, brother!
Pretty funny.......2006-02-23
This book was pretty funny. It's obviously an older book as I have read a lot of the comics in 'Get Fuzzy', but it was still pretty damn funny. Bucky's the best
THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS.......2005-01-25
Recently, I began to slowly return to the barren landscape that is today's newspaper comic section. I soon discovered 2 strips that I actually looked forward to reading every day - The Boondocks and Get Fuzzy. After warming up to The Boondocks, I went out and bought every book to catch up on this unique strip. Needless to say, I also did the same thing for Get Fuzzy. The Dog Is Not A Toy (House Rule #4) is an excellent introduction into the lives of Rob Wilco, Bucky Katt, and Satchel Pooch. Finally, the truth about cats and dogs.

Book Description
Why do people tell dirty jokes?
And what is it about a joke's dirtiness that makes it funny?
G. Legman was perhaps the foremost scholar of the dirty joke, and as legions of humor writers and comedians know, his Rationale of the Dirty Joke remains the most exhaustive and authoritative study of the subject.
More than two thousand jokes and folktales are presented, covering such topics as The Female Fool, The Fortunate Fart, Mutual Mismatching, and The Sex Machine. These folk texts are authentically transcribed in their innocent and sometimes violent entirety. Legman studies each for its historical and socioanalytic significance, revealing what these jokes mean to the people who tell them and to the people who listen and laugh.
Here -- back in print -- is the definitive text for comedians and humor writers, Freudian scholars and late night television enthusiasts. Rationale of the Dirty Joke will amuse you, offend you, challenge you, and disgust you, all while demonstrating the intelligence and hilarity of the dirty joke.

Cheez! At These Prices, Buy It!.......2005-07-06
Luckily, I have both volumes on my shelf, so I don't need to pick either up-- but volume one, used, for less than ten bucks on Amazon?? Get it! This is a hysterically mordant look at dirty jokes by one of the sharpest and filthiest minds ever. And volume one is easier to digest than volume two (which is more oriented to potty humor and perversion). Check the prices for Vol. II on Amazon! As you see, not cheap. So: pick up Vol. I and see what the fuss is about-- you'll be pleasantly surprised at Legman's cranky takes on jokes in every category. He was completely unique; you'll enjoy meeting him, despite his dyspeptic outlook and air of superiority (to everyone, including you). The joke may be dead, but the body's buried here-- and it still looks funny.
Yes, five stars.......2003-08-22
I always thought my mother was smarter than she let on. She had me read "the rationale of the dirty joke" when I was in my early teens. She told me not to read the jokes so much, but also what was written about the jokes in between. The book/s we had, two by the same name (vol 1 & vol 2)) taught the psychology of why people laugh at 'dirty' jokes. It's armed me in life with an understanding of humour, and the core of humour within us; why we laugh. I can no longer locate my copies, but like the earlier post, I wouldn't sell them for any money if I could find them.
A Bargain at any Price.......2001-03-28
This book and its companion volume No Laughing Matter (actually a set of two) have been out of print for some time, and I cannot begin to understand why. Even with all of the opportunities for sale on the Internet, I would not part with my copies for a thousand dollars. Since the works are a pair, I will add what I wrote on the companion volume, which is equally applicable here.
Do you have a compelling interest in Freudian or Jungian analyses of vulgar humor? If so this is the book for you. If not, don't stop yet. Do you simply like dirty jokes? This may be for you too, but will probably be a bit on the esoteric expensive side. Do you have a cultural or literary interest in the development and similarity of dirty joke themes around the western world and throughout history? If so, these are (there are 2 volumes) absolutely the resource that you can't do without. Both your sense of humor and higher instincts for the scholarly will be amply rewarded. Additionally, if you have the warped or puerile sense of entertainment by the irony of juxtaposing the elevated with the profane, Legman will become your favorite author. One caution: if you have some sensitivity about the coarse and obscene, limit yourself to the first volume. The second moves more into the areas of sexual perversion and body function humor and accordingly is less suited to delicate sensitivities....
i amazed.......2000-07-30
I picked up the dirty old thumbed copy from a salvalion army op shop for 30 cents. It looked like all the pages were bent but they had been carfully turned over to mark some of the jokes many years before. I started reading. It was not just a collection of jokes but a beautifully researched and systematic approach. It is to jokes what the oxford dictionary is to the language. It suprising the change since it was written as amongst my friends many of the jokes are not well known and clearly others have technological adaptation. the suprising issue is how things have changed culturally since it was written. One wonders if menstral jokes for example are shared within lesbian social groups that would be taboo in other company or if the degree of ethnic jokes that are no longer promulgated in polite company have their early source listed here. If the porice was right I would like copies for my friends
Classic.......1999-03-16
I first read this book in college in the early 70's and thoroughly enjoyed this and the 2nd volume for both their literary and scatalogical merit. I just read that Gershon Legman died on Feb 23, 1999 at age 81 at a hospital near his home in Opio, France. Nice obit in NYT, Sunday 3/14/99.
I hope his scholarship and fight against censorship will motivate some publisher to re-issue these two classics.

AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE BOOK FOR SERIAL FANS.......2006-02-14
The movie serial is a lost art form, extinct now for some 50 years although its spirit lives on in television with such episodic shows as "Lost", "24", and others. The last of the serials was many years before my time but I developed a fondness for them many years ago. While Hollywood perhaps looked down on serials and serial stars as even less than B-feature players, serials nevertheless entertained millions of movie goers for over 40 years, beginning in the silent era and running through the mid-1950's. The genres that serials covered such as sci-fi, adventure, crime, westerns, and mysteries worked well in serialized format. And we have the serials to thank for the first silver screen appearances of Superman, Batman, Captain America, The Shadow, and Captain Marvel. Comic book and pulp characters were tailor made for Saturday afternoon escapism.
Serial Film Stars from McFarland books is simply the most comprehensive book on those actors who starred in these sometimes wonderful and sometimes horrid celluloid classics. At nearly 900 pages, the book spotlights over 400 serial film stars. Sorted alphabetically the book provides biographical information on each star and a list of the serials they starred in. The serial information includes the complete cast, director, number of chapters, and year of release. Inside you'll meet actors who spent their entire careers in the serials and those who used them as a stepping stone to bigger stardom.
Kirk Alyn was the screen's first Superman, donning the tights and cape twice in "Superman" in 1948 and "Atom Man Vs. Superman" in 1950. Clayton Moore of course is best known as the star of the Lone Ranger, but Moore made a dozen serials in his career including one of my favorites The Crimson Ghost where he played the chief henchman of that notorious criminal. Roy Barcroft's name isn't well known but the fine character actor was one of the true kings of serials, appearing in 28 of them from 1936 to 1954.
Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill and Lon Chaney Jr., are all remembered for their many famous roles in horror films throughout the 30's and 40's. But all of these men also starred in serials including Atwill's turn as the villainous "Scarab" in Captain America. Sports stars Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, and Jack Dempsey also starred in movie serials. Perhaps the most famous serial star was none other than John Wayne, who did three serial westerns before he would become one of Hollywood's all-time leading box office kings.
No book could hope to be 100% comprehensive on serial film stars, especially when information from the silent era is so sketchy, but Buck Rainey's book comes about as close as we can possibly hope for. Rainey covers these star's lives in as much detail as possible, from birth to death. What a pleasure it was to see that a number of these stars are still alive today. As massive book that is massively entertaining and an outstanding reference book for anyone who loves the serials.

Dr. Honda understands so intuitively what Dr. Suzuki was trying to accomplish with his Talent Education Movement. As a "Suzuki kid" turned Suzuki Violin teacher myself, I appreciated Dr. Honda's faithful and loving portrait of Dr. Suzuki and the early efforts in Matsumoto to bring Talent Education to the world. Thousands of children and adults all over the world, who have proved that "Man is the son of his environment," have Dr. Suzuki AND Dr. Honda to thank.

Awesome book.......2007-08-23
This is a great book. It is not cumbered with variations. It is easy to prepare this opening for a tournament.
Lane does what he sets out to do.......2006-07-28
The very first thing to say is.......Lane accomplishes the task he sets for the book. That task is to provide a repertoire in the Scotch that can be learned relatively quickly and is likewise low maintenance. And i can say that after working with this book for serveral days i felt comfortable enough playing the lines of the Scotch that he recommends that i ran them out twice in a rapid tournament with good results. His introductions to and explanations of the positions the recommends are useful in helping one understand the lines. And so, i can say i recommend the book IF that is what you are looking for.
One just need be away of the trade-off of such an approach. In particular, the attempt to avoid learning a lot of theory (and make no mistake, the Scotch can be very theoretical) means that in the Mieses Variations especially (1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.d4,ed4; 4.Nd4,Nf6; 5.Nxc6....) Lane recommends lines that are less critical and, as he says with regards to his recommendation against 8...Ba6, defers the discussion into the middle game. Now this is not a criticism, I merely mean to point to what must be done in order to have a quick-to-learn, low maintenance approach to 1.e4,e5: one has to avoid the best lines.
the one question i came away with, and the only hint of a criticism here, is why Lane felt it necessary to also include a relatively long chapt on the Scotch 4Knights, given that he had already taken a low-theory approach to 4...Nf6. It is good to see coverage of the Scotch 4Knights. Wells 1998 book, also from Batsford, skipped it altogether, noting that it had a completely different feel from other Scotch lines. But in a repertoire book where presumeably pages are at a premium, does one really need it when one has already chosen less forcing, less critical lines against the Mieses to start with? Or if one had decided to include the 4Knights, couldnt one also then use the other two chapters to advocate more critical approaches to the Mieses (the obvious answer being...this would have required a somewhat longer book than Lane was provided by Batsford)?
There are things here for all Scotch players, as the other reviewer has already noted: especially useful coverage against 4...Qh4, but also coverage of more off-the-beaten track approaches by Black which is a very useful and practical thing to provide for the typical club player.
To summarize, this is a good book at what it sets out to do....but if you aim to take the Scotch up regularly, you are eventually going to want something more against the Mieses Variation than what Lane provides and you will need to turn elsewhere.
It is a repertoire book and not a landmark classical study of chess that people will be reading for years to come. So for that reason I would not give it more than 4 stars. Let us reserve 5 stars for _My System_ and the like. Three stars here indicates that the repertoire itself has some built-in limits of which one ought to be aware. BUT this is a good book for the practical player who wants to pick up something quickly against 1.e4,e5.
A must-own.......2006-02-02
I bought this book because the Scotch game is a part of a repertoire recommended by Sam Collins in his book An Attacking Repertoire for White. It is an attractive opening and you have to believe when Collins said "White is seeking a HUGE long-term advantage." The fine print is that Black gains a lot of activity very early on and so you should learn the theory. The chapter for the Scotch game in that book of Collins is insufficient.
This book of Gary Lane is one of the best chess opening books I ever had. He explains how to play this opening with clarity. The basic plans for both White and Black are laid-out first in every chapter.
The best thing about this book is that the lines are from the most recent games, many are from year 2005. That alone is worth every penny I paid for this book.
In his introduction, he promises to provide a repertoire for White that requires low maintenance and can be learned in a weekend. I believe he delievered on this promise.
Here is one to sweat you appetite. In his chapter about the 4...Qh4 line (very popular in club play even though a lot of experts say it is just not good), the main line involves a piece sacrifice by white. Gay Lane reckons it will still catch people out because Gutman's renowned Batsford book was published in 2001 and crucuially the sacrificial move is not mentioned. So if you play 4..Qh4 as black, you need to get this book and see if you can try to refute the sacrifice. I am already able to win several games under 20 moves with white using the line.
If you play the open game as white and you don't want to study the more theoretical Ruy Lopez, then the Scotch is the best alternative. And if you want to play the Scotch, this is the book you have to buy.
If you play 1..e5 (2...Nc6) as black, this is a must have book. The book is written from White's point of view, but you'll need this to examine and try to refute the recommended lines.

A well-engineered and reliable kitchen appliance, say a toaster oven or a blender, has a certain functional beauty, and so does this book. Authors Mark C. Tibergien and Rebecca Pomering specifically target and serve financial advisers who own consulting firms. Based on their decades of consulting experience, the authors offer sound advice designed to protect - or deliver - any small financial service firm from a fiscal crisis. In the course of doing so, they debunk several myths, such as the notion that you can simply sell your way out of poor financial performance, or that most small firms don't need to borrow to pay for their operations. With an appendix chock full of helpful tools, such as a cash-flow calculator, a sample financial statement and a practice-management assessment questionnaire, this is a useful book for any small consultancy. We strongly recommend this book to financial advisers who know the value of good advice.

Tibergien and Pomering do a great job of jamming a fortune in good advice into a book any advisor can buy for what it costs to get a good haircut. If you're like me, you'll keep it on your desk and use it as your firm's operating manual. Great stuff!
