    Book Description

This interdisciplinary book investigates the roles played by representations of Indian architecture made between the late eighteenth century and the present day. This handsome volume discusses how photographs can be read not just as records of an architectural past but as complex artifacts of the cultural and political forces shaping colonial India. The diverse contributors to the book, from post-colonial theorists to museum curators, examine the connections between photography and architecture through the visual culture of colonialism. The volume explores subjects ranging from representations of landmarks of India from picturesque views to travel mementos, photographs as memorials of historical events, and contemporary popular images. Illustrated with some 180 photographs, many rare or little known, the book offers an appealing and fresh view of colonial images as seen through postcolonial eyes. The volume also includes an extensive bibliography of literature of nineteenth-century photography in South Asia.

        Book Description

For fifteen years, Peter Rosenstein has been scouting the boroughs of New York City to photograph the very best graffiti murals. His curiosity and energy, along with his extraordinary ability to capture the essence of the murals, has resulted in nearly two thousand color images and an unparalleled documentation of an art which very often is destroyed. Tattooed Walls features over one hundred photographs from Rosenstein's expeditions to the Bronx, Harlem, Spanish Harlem, the Lower East Side, the East Village, and Brooklyn.

The contemporary urban murals in Tattooed Walls depict a wide range of the human condition. They celebrate life; they mourn death; they express religious devotion; they are a communication medium for gang rivalries; they assert political opinions; and some simply bring a splash of color to a drab neighborhood wall. Down the block from vibrant spray-can creations are trompe l'oeil murals, a centuries-old technique meant to deceive the eye. Memorial murals are particularly moving in the lives they commemorate and in the statement they make against neighborhood violence.

Though a few New York muralists—such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat— achieved worldwide recognition, the majority work in obscurity and exist in a tight-knit world in which their fame is limited to their peers. Tattooed Walls includes a brief interview with the legendary artist and political activist De La Vega whose territory is Spanish Harlem, and a commentary from the artist Chico. It also features a foreword by artist and gallery owner Stefan Eins, who was one of the first in the broader art world to recognize and promote graffiti art.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2007-06-03

One Piece is by many considered to be one of the most popular manga and anime series in the world, and whoever says that is right. This graphic novel holds the first eight chapters of this marvelous manga.

        Romance Dawn

        Chapter 1: Romance Dawn
As a young boy, Monkey D. Luffy met a band of pirates known as the Red-Haired Pirates, which inspired him to sail the seas in search of a legendary treasure known as One Piece. Read his backstory in this chapter and how his inspiration to be a pirate was sparked.

Chapter 2: They Call Him "Straw Hat Luffy"
Found in a barrel on a pirate ship, Luffy befriends a lowly cabin boy named Koby and helps him get over his fears of his ugly pirate captain, Alvida. Luffy decides to help Koby with his dream of becoming an officer in the navy by sending Alvida packing.

Chapter 3: Enter Zolo: Pirate Hunter
To get Koby to enlist in the Navy, Luffy and Koby sail on a dinghy to a place known as Naval Base island. There, they meet Helmeppo, a sniveling Naval officer and the son of a naval captain and the pirate hunter Zolo, who Luffy wants in his pirate crew. Unfortunately, Zolo declines the offer seeing as pirate hunters and pirates don't mix, not to mention the fact that he's tied to a stake for a whole month for attacking Helmeppo's rabid dogs.

Chapter 4: The Great Captain Morgan
Helmeppo announces that he would execute Zolo in three days, breaking the promise he made to Zolo that if he could live his month scentence, he would set him free. Luffy responds to this by punching him in the face, sending him home to his father, which happens to be an evil naval captain known as Axe-Hand Morgan, who has no care for Luffy until Luffy accidentally breaks a statue of him that took three years to build.

Chapter 5: The King of the Pirates and the Master Swordsman
Koby tries to free Zolo while Luffy looks for his swords. Just as the navy is about to kill Koby and Zolo, Luffy shows up to save the day! We also learn Zolo's backstory.

        Chapter 6: Number One
Luffy manages to free Zolo and give him his swords, so the two prepare for a fight with the Navy. Luffy fights Morgan with his incredible stretching powers, and the fight is going well. Zolo reveals his intentions: to be the greatest swordsman to ever live. Just when Luffy is about to defeat Morgan, Helmeppo stops Luffy by threatening to shoot Koby in the head. Luffy is about to punch Helmeppo just as Morgan is about to cut Luffy in two, but Zolo makes short work of an already injured Morgan and Luffy plasters Helmeppo in the face with his famous Gum-Gum Blast. Zolo joins Luffy's crew for freeing him.

        Chapter 7: Friends
Luffy and Zolo recuperate after the battle with Morgan at an eatery. The Navy shows up and tell Luffy and Zolo to leave the island. Koby wants to join the Navy still, so when the Navy says for Koby to leave too because he's Luffy's friend, Luffy tells Koby's entire story and how he worked with a pirate to seemingly ruin Koby's chances of getting in the Navy. Koby stops him by punching Luffy in the face, so the two fight until the lieutenant points out that the two are obviously not friends. Koby joins the Navy because he won't travel with Luffy, and Luffy and Zolo sail off.

        Chapter 8: Nami
Luffy accidentally gets himself caught by a bird he tries to catch for food, whn Zolo chases after him, he runs into three drowning pirates from the Buggy pirate crew, which hop aboard. Luffy runs into a girl named Nami when the bird drops him, who specializes in robbing pirates.

        5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2006-11-05

Awesome start to an awesome series. The only major changes I can find is changing Zoro to Zolo, but that never really bothered me that much.

So yeah, I would suggest buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Aye Aye Captain to the Weapons!.......2006-07-30

I still dont know how I got to buy this manga, I got so followed up on this manga that I when I got stuck waiting for the english papers I decided to keep downloading, until vol 40! I am still shock this is a great story, eventhough a lot of persons say that this is not a good art, but for me its one of the best stories and the art is pretty good...

I have been following the adventures of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Ussop, Robin and little Reinder! They are an awesome group even got some of the movies, cool!

The adventures are really great! The passion the artist, this reminds me of Dragonball... somehow, but still its much better I hope to see the Nakama of Luffy complete and see him become the King of the Pirates!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best Manga that you'll ever read........2006-07-18

Buy it. Well, buy all of the One Piece volumes. One Piece is one of my favorite mangas. I'd reccomend this series to ages 10+. Its the story of a 17 year old named Monkey D. Luffy, who sets out to gain a crew of pirates, return his trademark Straw Hat to Shanks and ultimately find the legendary treasure One Piece. Just buy volume 1 and you'll be hooked untill the cows come home... and after.

5 out of 5 stars Mugiwara Kaizoku (Straw Hat Pirates).......2006-07-10

Actually, I just got a coworker addicted to this wonderful anime. He keeps asking me when I'll put on another episode of "Straw Hat Boy".
But about the books. If you've EVER read a book about something you've watched you'll know it's a lot better. This is exactly the same here!
Echiiro Oda does an awesome job with all his books. There's added comments from the author between chapters, and side notes that would benefit any lover of anime, or anyone looking for a good manga/comic.
Personally, I believe this book is great for all ages!
I've only read the first 4 books, but I've watched the first 200 episodes. It's a little juvenile, but it's loads of fun!

She was too busy to keep a diary. Luckily, AmEx kept one for her.

From comedian Amy Borkowsky comes a hilarious collection about how she-quite literally-spent her early years as a single career woman. After digging out several dust-covered boxes from the back of her closet, Amy discovered twelve years' worth of credit card statements, documenting, in their own way, every significant event in her life. They show that on July 12, 1993, Amy spent $189.12 at Victoria's Secret, and that on July 14 she returned the entire purchase-evidence of a relationship that suddenly unraveled, right before The Lingerie Phase. The $601.76 she spent at Ann Taylor reminds her of her quest to find a suit that would cover not only her torso but also her career-related insecurities, and a $30.25 charge for her first Caller ID box recalls her first fruitless attempts to block out her interfering mother. Every purchase tells a story, and this wickedly funny account relates Amy's search for what every young woman is really shopping for in life: love, success, and independence.

          3 out of 5 stars I guess I'm the oddball here.......2007-03-13

Unlike the other reviewers, this book just didn't do anything for me. Perhaps I just like more "plot." This read as just a series of quick skits. To me, some were mildly amusing, but mostly, I just tried to get through the book so that I could start reading something else.

          5 out of 5 stars Very original..........2006-03-29

This book was great because it was very original and just...cute... There are a lot of books based on journals, but to have credit card statements tell a story makes it all the more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Amy sure makes a statement.......2006-01-09

Garrison Keillor has his Lake Wobegon; Dave Berry has his "I'm not making this up!"; dooce.com has intestinal distress, and Amy Borkowsky in her book "Statements" has American Express. As the cover of the book says, "She was too busy to keep a diary... Luckily AmEx kept one for her."

Using what she claims are her American Express statements for the past several years and actually including lines from those statements, Borkowsky treats us to the adventures of a single thirty-something ad copywriter turned comedienne. This book is the hardbound equivalent of a chick-flick so some guys may not be able to relate but there's enough cute situations and humor that it is worth trying.

An example in one of her tales is her wanting (as an adult woman) what she had always wanted as a little girl and had never gotten. She writes "Every birthday and ever Chanukah throughout my childhood I'd beg for one, and each year I'd get the same thing. Underwear. Fine for warming buns but totally useless for baking cakes."

There are plenty of credits on her American Express statements along with the charges. As she states in the chapter called Returns: I have my own Return Policy: if I happen into a store with a policy that "All Sales Are Final," I won't return there. Closet space and money are too scarce. She even had the balls to charge a ticket to France on the Concorde to meet eligible men in the elegant Concorde airport lounge. She got her refund by canceling at the last minute.

I found her funny without being slapstick, sensitive without being maudlin. I recommend it for a good, light read.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, with substance.......2005-12-15

Got it to give as a gift but cheated and read it first. Started out just skimming but it really pulled me in. Laughed out loud and thought parts of it were heartfelt, too. Some the the observations reminded me of Carrie from Sex and the City in a good way, though the author clearly has her own style. I'm married now so enjoyed remembering the craziness of being single. Amazing how you really can track your life through credit card bils. A top-notch, really funny read overall.

          3 out of 5 stars Cute.......2005-12-04

This was a cute book. I enjoyed the stories and the writing style was fun.

I am glad that I don't have her credit card debts! and it is amazing how much of your life you can reconstruct based on old credit card receipts.

Some of the stories were a tad boring, but overall the book was funny and I would consider purchasing other books by this author.

5 out of 5 stars For Chinese Children and Mulan lovers.......2004-10-08

I love Disney & what they have done with the books they have made into movies and how they added their touch, often changing the ending to fit their ideas.

Having said that it is also nice & very important for us to read or the author's original story. Hans Christian Anderson's was a gifted writer & story teller of many wonderful books. In his book the Little Mermaid it has a much sadder ending than Disney's. But again, it's important to know the original story.

This is one of my favorite Mulan books, simply because it was done not as a traditional book, but as a Chinese folding style book. The book has 2 red covers - red is a very special color for the Chinese. The paper that was chosen looks like it is handmade paper and that just add to the beauty of this book. I also like that the poem is in English and also Chinese Characters. The author put alot of thought into this book, and it really shines!

This is definately one of my most treasured books!

          5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUT BEAUTY.......2001-11-22

There's and old quote that says that the greatest perfumes come in small bottles. This applies for this little, but beautiful book about an ancient Chinese poem that serves as the inspiration for Disney's Mulan.

First you get a little red box, inside you find a scroll made in the typical Chinese way. You unfold little by little the pages that reach almost 240 inches long. And while you read the poem, one really get in the mood because it includes the poem in chinese characters as well.

And if you are looking for illustrations, the book includes some in color, some made by pencil and even a couple of what seems original Chinese paintings.

You get that much in a little book! isn't it great?

4 out of 5 stars Click click, & click click click, by the dorway Mulan weavs.......2000-09-15

If you want to know the poem that inspired the Disney fillm you can't go wrong with this book. You get the entire original poem along with a beautiful presentation. The poem is very short, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in style and mood. From the outset this is a different kind of book. There is no binding, instead it is one long sheet of parer folded back and forth. This give's the reader the sense they are reading an authentic Chinese document. The photos, drawings, sketches, and Chinese writing inside only heighten this impression. It's also a facinating study in how the film was structured. You can see where Disney added to the story or left things out, as well as see the the visual development of Mulan and her world as told by the pre-production art work. Wthout a doubt, this makes for the best book of a Disney film yet!

          5 out of 5 stars "The" book.......1999-02-19

if i could only buy one book in my whole life, this would be it

5 out of 5 stars It's one of the best "Mulan" books!.......1998-12-18

Most of the reasons I get any Disney book is because I want to know how to draw the characters(and because I just like the movie). For Mulan, I heard it was an ancient poem before a movie, so I wanted to read the actual poem. I was browsing around in the Disney store when, low and behold, there was the poem. Inside was also a lot of rough pencil drawigs to help me draw the characters. This is a collectible book for any Disney or Mulan fan.

          Book Description

"Whatever background you bring to it, the book willl likely enrich your understanding of Parker's music. . . ." --Cadence
As one of the architects of modern jazz (often called "bebop"), Charlie Parker (1920-55) had a profound effect on American music that continues to this day.
This book opens with a chapter of biography and then progresses to four chapters focusing on Charlie Parker's music by tracing his artistic evolution and major achievements as a jazz improviser. Much like a guided tour through an artist's retrospective, the book introduces readers to a sampling of Charlie Parker's most illustrative works. The musical discussions and transcribed musical examples are keyed to compact disc timings for easy location--a feature unique to this book.
"The musical analysis is brilliant, particularly the pre-1945 fragments." --DownBeat
". . . debunks the stereotype that jazz musicians are unschooled and unsophisticated when it comes to music as art rather than entertainment. . . . [An] insightful and informative addition to the literature of jazz." --Calvin Wilson, Kansas City Star
Carl Woideck is Instructor of Jazz History, University of Oregon.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Bird.......2006-12-17

This is the most accurate and thorough book on Charlie Parker's music, and contains an excellent, concise account of his life. Unfortunately, my textbook supplier says it's out of print.

Woideck's excellent _A Charlie Parker Companion_ is my other favorite book on the subject -- also out of print! I have wanted to use these two books in popular graduate seminars I teach on Parker's music, but haven't been able to obtain them.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Powerful.......2000-04-13

I have the honor of being one of Carl Woideck students in his various jazz related classes at the University of Oregon and I can say without a doubt that this man knows his jazz. This book is an extension of who Charlie Parker was to his music and to the public -- filled with many personal insights about the man and his legend. This book is truly a must for any fan of Bird or popular music in general.

This is a large collection of 225 quite difficult crosswords. I would consider them to be as hard as the Sunday Times, and for me that's an effort. The last 75 feature quotations from not particularly common works. Also, it would be well to be conversant in most modern languages, plus Latin. When I finally nailed one whole puzzle it was a heady feeling. They were fun, but lots harder than I had expected from some of their other books.

A good primer for new managers with many easy-to-understand management concepts. Enjoyed this in combination with Warriors, Workers, Whiners, & Weasels: Understanding and Using The Four Personality Types To Your Advantagewhich expanded with more specific management practices.

4 out of 5 stars Good Common Sense with a Few Gems.......2006-05-01

I always dislike it when books sensationalize problems. To call these errors "Fatal" as in YOU COULD DIE!?!?! seems extreme to me. Very few errors in life are fatal, and surely managers have enough stress in their worlds without having to worry about FATAL errors to deal with. Let's just call these "errors" and begin working on them.

The first question is, of course, what ARE the 13 errors. They are: Refusing to accept personal responsibility, failing to develop people, trying to control rather than influence people, joining the wrong crowd, managing everyone the same way, forgetting about profit, focussing on problems instead of goals, being too friendly, not setting standards, not training your employees, condoning incompetence, recognizing only the top performers, and trying to manipulate people.

You can say that many of these are common sense - but that's true for any management book. Dealing with human beings IS common sense. Still, many of us forget that sometimes - or need a few tips on dealing with a specific situation. For example, some managers feel that the issues are all with the employee and that the employee should just "fix themselves and do the job, dammit". We've all worked for a BAD manager though and know that a lot of how well an employee does his/her job is based on the management. Another aspect of this is that the book talks directly about achieving good results. It reminds you that your aim should be good results. Not in a "burn the villages and get the gold" way, but in a "it's better to reach your goal efficiently rather than waste 12 hours doing it in a poor way".

I think that's an important distinction for people to make. Many managers have long, complex procedures and work tons of hours - then pressure their employees to do the same and "measure up". Instead, of the managers made their lives more organized and simplified, they could have the same end results with far less stress and time. All humans need time to rest and relax - managers AND employees. It's important to focus on that goal, vs trying to seem as busy as possible in inefficient ways.

On the other hand, the book has some areas where it's very theoretical but not directly helpful. They say that if you expect your employees to do well and give them training, then they naturally will do well. That we managers just have to "get out of the way". This certainly isn't always true! There are employees who simply will look for ways to avoid doing work or shunting work to others even when they know what they should do and how to do it. To ignore these realities is to be frustrated.

There's a section where they say an employee's self motivation and self esteem are important - but truly, how many managers could "retrain" an adult who is set in his or her ways? Sure, it's good to know that an employee has low self esteem in order to talk with him in an effective manner - but managers will rarely have success in "fixing" an adult employee's personal psyche problems.

Another section talks about how managing isn't always easy. I do think this is an important lesson for many managers to learn. Yes, it sucks to have to make some decisions - but you have to do it. It's hard to discipline an employee you like - but you do it the best way you can. If you simply avoid doing certain things, everybody suffers as a result. This topic is covered in several different ways - you have to set up guidelines, you have to enforce those guidelines and give specific, direct commentary if someone is slacking off. You can't let it slide because it's easier on you. You have to step up and address it so that you manage the problem.

While many of these issues may be common sense for established managers, the tips can prove quite useful for new members. I do find a few gems in here that even older managers might find helpful to add into their arsenal.

A good book to at least read at the library. If you get it for yourself, lend it out to a few friends - you might be surprised at how long it takes for them to choose to return it to you.

                3 out of 5 stars Pretend profits don't count.......2004-12-14

I'm not a manager, and don't aspire to be one. Except to manage myself, that's plenty.

As far as other people, well, yes, I see that managers are needed in the profit economy: They have to make sure that the workers (labor) help maximize the profit of the company.

                W. Steven Brown does have experience in this area, and he sprinkles his personal stories throughout this book. The personal stories are the best part. I think he should have written a book only with personal stories. A lot of the other stuff is dull and common sensical.

Brown comes through this book as a reasonable person, a consultant and a self-described teacher. What he seems to lack, what the whole capitalist system seems to lack, is heart, not the organ itself of course but the feeling of thinking beyond the system, outside of the system. Heart could mean treating people as individuals rather than a piece of the system. It's not Brown's fault, that's just the way the capitalist system works.

And it probably wouldn't work if managers were humanitarians and altruists. This is what Brown is emphasizing. Yes, they have to give the illusion of being humanitarians and altruists, but they can't actually be that. They have to ensure that the bottom line is black, or, guess what, they lose.

I like John Heider's book, The Tao of Leadership, better. Those who lead least lead best. Yes, this may be an unachievable ideal in the capitalist society, but I'm a dreamer, I mentioned that, not a manager.

                Diximus.

After reading many other managerial texts, I find this book to be standard and common sense. I would only recommend this book to those who are very knew to management and have not read much on this topic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading for New and Old.......2003-04-28

I wish I can give away the books to everyone I know. It is very good, down-to-earth and practical rules of managing. And the exercises and the contracts at the end of each chapter really works!
I am a new person in the workforce with no prior experience, and now I understand the grounds on how effective and successful managers operates. I am also impressed by the usability of the content, meaning that even where I come from (which is not US) the errors and how to avoid it is amazingly applicable. Some people who I respected are also showing the qualities described by the book. Excellent reading. Highly recommended for young executives and newly appointed managers. It might be helpful to buy extra copies to be forwarded to some ineffective managers :P
