Book Description
No single item of clothing has had greater influence on Western images of Middle Eastern and North African women than the veil. The fascination of Western writers, artists, and photographers with the veil reflects the voyeuristic nature of our interest in what is strange and "other."
Veil, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the Institute of International Visual Arts in London, explores the representation of the veil in contemporary visual arts. Providing a context for the commissioned essays are a number of classical historical texts crossing religions, cultures, genders, and ages -- from Greek myths to articles published in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Some of the contemporary artists and scholars write autobiographically about the meaning of the veil in their lives. Others take a more political approach, discussing, for example, how the events of September 11 changed the use and reception of veil imagery throughout the world. Still others take a historical approach, examining how nineteenth-century technological developments in travel and photography led to photographic depictions of both the veiled and unveiled body in relation to landscape. A number of essays look at the art historical precedents for the current interest in artwork addressing the veil, while others examine how codes of modesty and gender segregation have affected the making and viewing of films in postrevolutionary Iran.
The essays are by Jananne Al-Ani, David A. Bailey, Alison Donnell, Ghazel, Salah Hassan, Reina Lewis, Hamid Naficy, Zineb Sedira, and Gilane Tawadros. The artists represented include Faisal Abdu'Allah, Kourosh Adim, Ghada Amer, Jananne Al-Ani, Farah Bajull, Samta Benyahia, Ga봡n de Cl鲡mbault, Marc Garanger, Shadafarin Ghadirian, Group AES, Emily Jacir, Ramesh Kalkur, Shirin Neshat, Harold Offeh, Gillo Pontecorvo, Zineb Sedira, Mitra Tabrizian, and Elin Strand.

Very Interesting and Insightful.......2003-11-12
From the hair and face coverings common in the Middle East to bridal costumes and nuns' habits in the West, the veil is "an item of clothing dramatically overburdened with symbolism ... [and] fought over by adherents and opponents," observes Reina Lewis in her introduction to this book, which is drawn from the Institute of Interna-tional Visual Arts exhibition of the same name. Summarizing the work of 20 artists, and incorporating essays and several dozen literary excerpts from a kaleidoscope of view-points, the book offers insight into questions such as: Where did "the veil" come from? What are its meanings, in the East, in the West, and in that growing, often exciting cul-tural space that is neither one nor the other? The editors challenge several notions com-mon in the West: the veil as exclusively Middle Eastern; the veil as "Islamic," the veil as a barrier to social rights for women, and the interpretation of choosing to veil or not as equivalent to choosing "oppression" on the one hand or "freedom" on the other. NANA Rocks!.......2006-07-25
This whole series is such a great deal! it's idealy for teens older than 16, because it is packed with drama, romance, sex, and alcohol. It's basically about two girls who are both named Nana, and they turn into the best of friends in Tokyo. Nana K. is very girly and naive, and she's also kinda a pushover. She falls for guys ALL THE TIME, and was cheated on by her bf. Nana K. is a tough band singer on the other hand..read on to find out more about these 2 awesome girls!!!

Boring.......2007-07-18
I found this book to be completely dull and unfunny. I really wanted to like this book because he used to write brilliant columns, (but even those have lost their edge). I was hoping he was putting all the funny stuff in his books and that's why his columns have been so uninteresting. After reading this book I find that that isn't the case. It just seems to me that if someone has barely enough humor to write a column, a book is out of the question. Sorry, Mr. Cameron, I just can't recommend this stinker.
What a disappointment - a big snoozer.......2007-06-03
I bought this for my mom-in-law for her birthday, because I had read an article of his that was hilarious - too wordy, but hilarious. I took a peek inside this book, and was so disappointed. It was a major snoozer. Come on man, when you TRY so hard to be funny, it's just not funny. I think he'd do better to stick to articles, not try and fill up a whole book. It just gets soooo wordy that the humor falls asleep (and I almost did) before he finishes a topic. I gave it to Goodwill, not mom-in-law. Maybe someone can save themselves some $$ and a little regret by not buying it new.
funny funny funny.......2007-03-22
I thought the book was a very tongue-in-cheek explanation of some men's thought processes, and why they do the things they do. I think only women with experiences with situations and arguments in the book will truly relate to it, but its a hilarious take on the battle of the sexes.
Sexist.......2006-08-17
I read 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, and I really liked it. It was filled with a lot of self-deprecating humor, as you watch Mr. Cameron make a complete fool out of himself. Yeah, it was good. However, he drew the entirely wrong message from the success of that book. He assumed that what people want are books that make men look like a load of laughable dunces.
Well, for all I know old Bruce is a dunce, but I, on the other hand, am not. There's a well established market in America for misandrous books, and this book will no doubt appeal to such buyers. If, on the other hand, you don't like sexist humor, then you will not like this book.
I hated this book, and highly recommend AGAINST buying it. 1 star is the most I give it.
Hillarious.......2006-03-19
This is at the top of my list as the funniest book I have ever read. It was truly entertaining, and I hated to put it down. I even recommended it for our book club.

This is a beautifully wrought introduction to classical music, aimed squarely at the neophyte and replete with time lines and lots of handsome photographs. It is accompanied by a 70+ minute compact disc with musical snippets to illustrate the text. It is a companion volume to Waugh's Opera: A New Way of Listening.
Customer Reviews:
Simple and To the Point.......2000-05-08
Waugh has put together a beautiful book that describes what classical music is all about, with fine visual art to accompany the characteristics of the pieces/composers. Waugh is not a snob about classical music (and aptly describes the music snobs one may encounter). The only drawback is that the music excerpts are mostly quiet, pastoral pieces; wish he had put in more variety of classical works with thunder and lightening.

It is "fair" to "good", augments vocabulary that is unknown........2007-07-30
Been of the non-real estate profession, it has enlightened my reading arsenal, well at least I hope so. Also, I'd like to thank you for not having any problems during delivery. Once again thanks. Hubert M.
Wealth of info!.......2007-07-27
Wow, what a book!! Tons of info!! Highly recommend to anyone shopping for a mortgage.
It depends on context........2007-05-22
If you are in the industry, great reference book.
However, if you are a first time buyer, this book has a lot of technical terms within the definitions! So technical, it can make you head spin!
excellent reference.......2007-02-06
This as an almost indispensible tool for anyone involved in real estate transactions. If you own a home, or you're planning to buy one, you will want to have this book as a guide to the myriad types of loans available, and the dizzying amount of real estate terms that are used. All of it is explained in plain English. It can be used by real estate professionals and laymen alike.
I find this book also useful for notary signing agents. Although we're not required (or supposed) to discuss the loan terms with the borrower at the closing, it still helps to know what all of these terms mean.
What I like about the book is the organization. All of the topics are in alphabetical order, making it easy to find the information you need quickly. There are many cross references and references to web sites. And unlike an ordinary encyclopedia, there are opinions from the author. If you've read his articles or visited his website, then you're already familiar with the wisdom he shares with his readers.
This is one encyclopedia you'll want to read from A to Z.
