        Book Description

At long last: Daniel Clowes is back at Pantheon, with a brilliant new graphic novel already hailed by Time as “another of his hilariously slightly off-center worlds that have a vague sense of dread about them. Kind of like where you live.”

Welcome to Ice Haven! “It’s not as cold here as it sounds,” declares Random Wilder, our reluctant guide to this sleepy Midwestern town. He’s also its would-be poet laureate. Would-be, that is, were it not for the "Florid banalities” of his archrival, Ida Wentz, published ad nauseam in the Ice Haven Daily Progress. Among Wilder’s other fellow Ice Havians are the lovelorn Violet Van der Plazt and Vida Wentz; the detective team of Mr. and Mrs. Ames; the adorable interracial moppets Carmichael and Paula; disaffected stationery salesgirl Julie Patheticstein; the Blue Bunny, newly sprung from prison and the bitterest rabbit in town; and poor little David Goldberg, missing for more than a week now…

While Dan Clowes has gotten a nod from the mainstream — an Oscar nomination for the screen adaptation of Ghost World - his work remains wonderfully idiosyncratic and imaginative. The lives of the men and women of Ice Haven are woven into a multi-layered tale that, while it owes a debt to Our Town, is ultimately based on and inspired by… Leopold and Loeb. No kidding.

Only Daniel Clowes could do it and, luckily for us, he has.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where have you gone Daniel Clowes?.......2007-09-06

It's very good, but just buy Eightball #22. I realize that many of the other reviews have said basically the same thing, but let's make a clear distiction between the sham of charging almost twenty dollars for a book that's barely distinguishable from the $6 comic (still available from the same publisher!) and the amazing piece of art that they both are. I can see that it's a matter of taste, and the non-linear story will not appeal to everyone, but Eightball #22 is still the comic I give non-fans to read in hopes of showing them what the medium is capable of. Let's all boycott Clowes's movies so he goes back to doing comics! I'm half kidding of course, but it's interesting and sad that "making it" in independent comics often means being able to leave comics for film, television, and the like. **Sigh**

2 out of 5 stars Is there a story here?.......2007-03-28

I read a lot of graphic novels and enjoy the majority of them, but some just don't make a lot of sense. This, for me, is one of the latter. I know, I know -- Clowes is one of the stars of the genre, and I actually very much enjoyed the award-winning _Ghost World,_ but this one isn't in that league at all. In structure, it's a series of very brief, semi-connected vignettes centered on a variety of residents of the town of Ice Haven, most of them teenage or younger. (I gather this is also just a slightly rewritten remake of the original comic book.) The interrelationships are unclear, the motivations are puzzling, and the dialogues and monologues are mostly overwritten. I guess even award-winners have bad days.

4 out of 5 stars has its moments.......2006-04-27

cannot say this is his best work - I think Ghost World is hard to match

5 out of 5 stars The best graphic novel of 2005.......2006-01-27

I don't have much to add, just wanted to say that this was my favorite graphic novel of 2005.

Far better than the overrated Jimmy Corgan and a tad better than Charles Burns' excellent "Black Hole."

        Pick it up.

        2 out of 5 stars Double Dipping.......2005-12-23

It looks like comic publishers have fully reached the point where they are now comfortable double-dipping their customers in the same way DVDs are double-dipped (like Sin City, Lord of the Rings). The Ice Haven hardcover book is like an improved, deluxe version of the original paperback comic. When I originally read the comic, the formatting seemed weird: the pages seemed like they should have been presented in a horizontal format (like they are in this hardcover collection). The problem with this double-dipping publishing strategy is that it will scare people away from buying the original comics if they know they are going to get double-dipped later. I know I won't be buying anymore 'Eightball' comics knowing I'm going to get double-dipped later. Should you buy this comic? Yes, if you don't have the original comic. If you already bought the original comic, you'll live without this reprint. But I'd hold off on buying any future issues of 'Eightball.'

                          Book Description

Sinfulnyms is the funniest way to say nasty things in public using ordinary words. A sinfulnym results from taking an ordinary word and transforming it into an acronym that is either humorous, lewd, or profane. Author Steeling N. Clausey has brought readers Sinfulnyms, an outrageously funny and over the top new book. As the title suggests, these are not words one would utter at the dinner table, nor are they for the faint of heart. Sinfulnyms is intended for a more sophisticated and sensuous reader. Many of the sinfulnyms are accompanied by hilarious adult illustrations that capture the true essence of the sinfulnym. Clausey's collection of new acronyms can be used liberally in e-mail and instant messaging. This is an innovative book that will broaden readers' vocabulary and horizons.

I ordered this book thinking my patrons would really enjoy a good humor book. I was appalled by the illustrations and will not put this on my shelf! Please be careful and make sure this is really what you want.

Even my BOSS bought a copy, so that when we have staff meetings he knows what everyone else is laughing about. If you want to expend and expound the essence of decadence, Sinfulnyms is the funniest way to do so.

                          Book Description

Director and screenwriter Michael Mann is the creative force behind such movies as Last of the Mohicans and Ali. Markedly reticent, Mann prefers that his personal background remain an enigma, but his disparate films contain clear and consistent messages. One of Mann's focuses is on the Information Age. He addresses the nature of modern communication, its use to manipulate and coerce, and the resultant subjugation of truth. The perils inherent in modern technology and communication stand in stark contrast to the power of symbolic and oral exchange, the trusted medium of Mann's protagonists.

This critical exploration of the films of Michael Mann examines his recurring focus on the nature of modern communication and information and their effect on the individual and society. Mann's films highlight the struggle to maintain a connection to reality in a world where information is a commodity manipulated and abused by forces that exert increasing control over its content and dissemination. Each chapter examines one of Mann's films—including Manhunter, The Keep, Last of the Mohicans, The Insider and Ali—in which the protagonist longs for a sense of human connection but is pitted against forces that devalue and destroy individuality. Photographs illustrate specific moments from the films. A bibliography and an index are included.

Critical analyses of the works of Michael Mann remain rare, but this little gem of a book, which integrates theory with lucid writing (all too rare for theoretical frameworks) and a thoroughly precise examination of Mann's pictures from 1981 through 2001, worthily meets the task that Mann admirers would be looking for in a critical study. Wildermuth brushes past the more obvious Mannian themes for a more probing and immediate discourse on the nature of communication, and how Mann laments how informatics and economics of consumption are incongruent with genuine symbolic exchange between beings. The only regret is that this nifty little book does not have chapters on Mann's two most recent films, "Collateral" and "Miami Vice", a pity as both may be all too easily dismissed as genre films, when in fact the fascinating ideas in Wildermuth's study would readily be applied to them also.

Let me start by acknowledging that the author is my brother. But, please don't perceive my review as biased on his behalf. This book is a fascinating exploration of director Michael Mann's (Miami Vice) recurring theme of the importance of communication to society and the manipulation and abuse of media. Excellent illustrations accompany an intriguing analysis of films including "The Insider", "Ali", "The Keep", "Heat", and "Last of the Mohicans." Highly recommended.

                          Book Description

This book is designed to help fretted dulcimer players at all levels grow in their technical abilities by developing strength, precision, control and flexibility in both the right and left hands. Acquiring a solid technical foundation provides a base upon which to build strong musicianship, enabling one to play more satisfying music regardless of style. Explore flatpicking, fingerpicking, slurs, chords, strumming, left hand precision and placement, right hand strength and control, volume, tone, articulation, and more using both dulcimer tablature and standard music notation. In this book, Mike has used ideas drawn from classical guitar study plus years of teaching dulcimer to develop exercises that will inspire and challenge players at all levels. The tunes and exercises are in the common dulcimer tuning of D-A-D, with a few exceptions. Some exercises are included for the four-string and five-string dulcimers, and a 6+ fret is required. The accompanying CD demonstrates key exercises and most of the tunes in the book.

I'm a music teacher and have some basic experience with the dulcimer. I've long wanted to become more proficient on the instrument but there is a lack of dulcimer teachers in my area. I'm so happy that I found this book. This book brings a more "classical" method of learning on the instrument; the drills and exercises are great for helping to develop technique. Obviously not as good as one would get from a private teacher, but I dare say it is the best one could get from a book.

A good strategy guide I would have to say, very good. it lists every characters moves and what level each move hits and anything special about each move except Jinpachi since you cannot use him but I would've enjoyed an analysis of Jipachi within this guide. It also gives a list of combos for each characters which are mostly juggles which is the main thing to do in Tekken 5 if you want to play with crazy fanatics who play for many hours which, I am somewhat kinda like that. It also gives pictures and the cost of each customization item which was kind of interesting. Also it gives some secrets away in the back and it comes with a free wall scroll. of course in there are some typos within the guide but it happens in most guides, no big deal. This is helpful and convenient.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive except for one thing.......2005-04-04

All the details described by the other readers are all true. There is only one thing this guide falls short of, it doesn't have maps of the Devil Within Game and the Strategies for the Devil Within Game are insufficient. Other than that, this guide is complete!

5 out of 5 stars Great game guide with all the details.......2005-03-23

This is a good book and it tells me how to play this game. Also, it tells me which players versus each other is good or bad. In addition, the Tekken: Devil within game isn't tell me a lot, but each thing it tells is useful. So, it is a good book to buy to play with the game together. Go for it. :)

                          Book Description

The business world is ready for an entirely new approach to leadership. Steve Farber has written the perfect book to energize business leaders and help them make the leap into extreme leadership. In fact, taking a giant ""L.E.A.P."" forward is exactly what Farber prescribes. What exactly is an extreme leader? One who cultivates love, generates energy, inspires audacity, and provides proof.

In his exciting and innovative new business parable, The Radical Leap, Farber explores an entirely new leadership model, one in which leaders are not afraid to take risks, make mistakes in front of employees, or actively solicit employee feedback. His book dispenses with the typical, tired notions of what it means to be a leader.

Farber, former Vice President and Official Mouthpiece of the Tom Peters Company, has written a business parable like no other, filled with vivid, fully realized, and eccentric characters, crazy plot twists, honest and believable conversations about leadership, and most importantly, an innovative program for leaders to inspire and engage their companies.

In The Radical Leap, we meet Steve, a leadership consultant who is intrigued and challenged by an enigmatic man named Edg, from whom he learns the concept of L.E.A.P. Steve is then asked to help a friend, Janice, overcome conflicts at the biotech company where she works and bring back the company's inspiring former CEO. The company is revitalized, having undergone a radical and successful transformation.

Farber's book reveals the questions leaders must ask themselves in order to truly become extreme leaders, including:

Why do I love my business, my employees, and my customers, and how can I show them how I feel? What effect do my actions have on the energy of the people around me? (OR, what are the unnecessary, time-consuming, bureaucratic policies and procedures that suck our energy?) How are we going to change the world of our company, our employees, customers, marketplace, and industry? What have I done today to show my commitment to my colleagues and customers?

4 out of 5 stars Motivation with a capital M.......2007-07-08

If you're looking to recharge your corporate batteries--or trying to acquire your first set--this book is for you. Farber tells the story, his story perhaps, of a management consultant who has lost his passion for the work. He's going through the motions until he encounters a series of oddball business visionaries who utterly transform his spirit. What makes these visionaries so odd is their fundamental approach to work: they infuse it with love. The LEAP in The Radical Leap stands for ...

                          cultivate Love
                          generate Energy
                          inspire Audacity
                          provide Proof

That's an approach to leadership that's as inspiring as it is daring. I wonder how many of us have the courage to follow Farber's way? The Radical Leap requires leaders to have a vision, bare their souls, relish their mistakes, invite risk, challenge conventional wisdom and express love always. Wow.

Farber was smart to write this as a novelette. If he had laid out his ideas in a typical self-help book, they would have sounded pie-in-the-sky. But as Farber relates his own transformation in narrative form, encountering a variety of hiccups along the way, his gives his ideas a concreteness that makes them seem not only realistic, but implementable.

4 out of 5 stars Leap into Leadership .......2007-07-06

The Radical Leap that gets us to think about leadership - or extreme leadership, to use Farber's term. What exactly is an extreme leader? One who cultivates love, generates energy, inspires audacity, and provides proof. (Hence the acronym, LEAP in the title of the book.)

Along with compelling conversation about these four key points, the book has more plot twists, the characters are more interesting, and the language is a bit edgier than the typical business parable by Patrick Lencioni, Ken Blanchard or Spencer Johnson.

It was named one of the Top 10 Best Business Books for 2004 and received the Acclaimed Reader's Choice Award from Fast Company magazine.

The "Radical Leap" provides a good overview for personal leadership. However, it does not provide enough specificity for someone really interested in reaching the top of his or her organization. I still believe it is a good book, but I would suggest Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership as a must read book.

4 out of 5 stars Surfin' to Success.......2007-04-08

I read this book with my own organization's challenges in mind. The concepts seemed perfect in symetry and sharply delivered. The only reason I'm holding back the fifth star is because his insertions of setting descriptions and flavor were somewhat "off" in their delivery and a bit "forced." Still, the book has a powerful message and can be read in an afternoon.
