Glenway Wescott and Monroe Wheeler were an extraordinary couple, to be sure. The two met for the first time in 1919, and it was, it seems, a classic case of love at first sight. At the time, Wescott was still in his teens and Wheeler just 20. Seemingly inured to the social mores of the time and inconstancies of youth, the two embarked on a relationship that can be called nothing short of a marriage, for the next 68 years, until Wescott's death in 1987. The young couple traveled the world, stopping in on Gertrude Stein's Paris Salon and crossing paths with Jean Cocteau on the Riviera, while Wescott developed his poetry and later fiction (he authored The Grandmothers and Pilgrim Hawk, among other bestsellers of his day) and Wheeler found his path. Eventually he would become the director of publications at the Museum of Modern Art.

The two moved with equal ease through the literary and artistic circles of London and the continent as well as their families' Midwestern homes. That their relationship thrived is notable enough. But 1927 brought a new challenge to their pairing. High-school student George Platt Lynes fell passionately in love with the strikingly good-looking Wheeler. And Wheeler, for his part, was entranced by Lynes's "full, luscious mouth and his wasplike waist." Instead of driving a wedge between Wescott and Wheeler, as might be expected, Lynes soon became part of their shared life. When, after some casting about, he hit upon photography, the two nurtured his career and used their considerable connections to get him both work and gallery shows.

When We Were Three presents photographs the trio took as they traveled the world together during the late '20s and '30s. They are the subjects of many of the images, but the Great Wall of China, an Egyptian sphinx, and their numerous friends--including Stein, Cocteau, Thornton Wilder, and Katherine Anne Porter--are captured, too. Oddly, the subject, date, and location of each photograph are carefully documented, but the photographer is not. Some of the earliest-known Lyne images are here, but it is the biographical essay by Anatole Pohorilenko in the front of the book that calls this out. Still, with its high production value and informative essays by Pohorilenko and James Crump, the book is an enjoyable choice for those interested in early-20th-century photography and the lifestyle of the legendary 1930s American expatriate in Europe. --Jordana Moskowitz

    Book Description

The travel albums of photographer George Platt Lynes, publisher Monroe Wheeler, and writer Glenway Wescott are illuminating documents of the American expatriate years. Together, this extraordinary minage-`-trois spent the heady interwar period frequenting Paris, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and other European cities, meeting up with such lively personalities as Thornton Wilder, Jean Cocteau, Katherine Anne Porter, Man Ray, Reni Crevel, and Christian Birard. Inspired by the encouragement of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Jane Heap, all three men went on to pursue vibrant careers in the arts. Platt Lynes became a celebrated photographer in 1931; Wheeler, with Wescotts sister-in-law, Barbara Harrison, started the extraordinary little press, Harrison of Paris in 1930; and Wescott became a bestselling fiction writer in 1927. The photographs represented here date from the threesomes first meeting, and underscore the intimate bond they shared. It is a story of youthfu! l passion and enthusiasm that spea ks to the enduring ties that held these three talented men together throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

    Book Description

When the internationally famous barbarian hero returned to comics, with an all-new fresh start by award-winning writer Kurt Busiek (JLA/Avengers, Astro City) and dynamic artists Cary Nord, Thomas Yeates, and Dave Stewart, the result was instant sell-outs and multiple printings to keep up with the demand. Now Conan's earliest adventures are collected in a handsome 192-page collection. Catch all the action and savagery as he wars with the murderous Vanir, meets the Frost Giant's Daughter, and is taken as a slave by the ancient sorcerers of Hyperborea! This top-selling new series faithfully expands on original author Robert E. Howard's literary creation.

2 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-08-02

The stories here are ok--they should be, as one of them is a straight Howard take.

However, I have a big problem with the artwork. The painted, somewhat pastel at times indistinct style makes Conan look like an eyeless kobold at times, and at others like big-eyed wild madmen all over the place. Non-inked fuzzy style looks crappy, to me.

Growing up with Barry Windsor-Smith this is a change much for the worse.

I won't be reading any more of this with the same art style.

    5 out of 5 stars Great magazine!!.......2007-05-14

This could not be better! The drawings are fantastic! Storyline is very good, great characters. Brutally fantastic! You should have this in your comic collection, it will be worth to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome art and a great read.......2007-03-12

This is one of the few comics books that I enjoy to read not just for the great art but also the amazing story. Very well written book, it moves at a nice pace, lots of action and it's not afraid to pull any punches; it definitely caters to an adult audience.

The art by Cary Nord is fantastic, this book doesn't disappoint at any level.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Conan .......2006-07-03

This is a compilation of various of Conans adventures when he was young. Great reading

    4 out of 5 stars Conan's Code.......2006-06-12

Conan is more than just the muscle bound barbarian that only thinks of women and riches, which I think is the opinion many who have not actually read a Conan book believe. He has a sense of honor and loyalty to his friends, even those he just met. Granted, he does get to indulge in the pleasures of life, but only after great suffering. He is a man that wants to have his food, drink and women and be left alone. But when the times come that he needs to step up, he will, and you'll regret waking the barbarian within.

      Book Description

Jonathan Rosenbaum, longtime contributor to such publications as Film Quarterly, Sight and Sound, and The Village Voice, is arguably the most eloquent, insightful film critic writing in America today. Placing Movies, the first collection of his work, gathers together thirty of his most distinctive and illuminating pieces. Written over a span of twenty-one years, these essays cover an extraordinarily broad range of films--from Hollywood blockbusters to foreign art movies to experimental cinema. They include not just reviews but perceptive commentary on directors, actors, and trends; and thoughtful analysis of the practice of film criticism.
It is this last element--Rosenbaum's reflections on the art of film criticism--that sets this collection apart from other volumes of film writing. Both in the essays themselves and in the section introductions, Rosenbaum provides a rare insider's view of his profession: the backstage politics, the formulation of critical judgments, the function of film commentary. Taken together, these pieces serve as a guided tour of the profession of film criticism.
They also serve as representative samples of Rosenbaum's unique brand of film writing. Among the highlights are memoirs of director Jacques Tati and maverick critic Manny Farber, celebrations of classics such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Manchurian Candidate, and considered reevaluations of Orson Welles and Woody Allen.

3 out of 5 stars The secrets are kept a secret........2003-01-03

      This book is...ok.

The only quam i have with it is, there's about 6 secrets that aren't even put in the book. And for those of you who do know, Tomb Raider III contains a secret level called "All Hallows" which is accessable only if you find all 60 of 59 secrets. (no, that's not a typo.)

...ok four. Now let me think...There's 1 missing in "Temple Ruins", 1 in "The River Ganges", 1 in "Mudubu Gorge", and if you're going crazy trying to find that one in "Aldwych", its in the same room you get into with the "Ornate Star". Just turn around and look up.

The only reason i did this is because we're waiting patiently for the "Angel of Darkness" to come out. But if you get bored...try getting all the secrets, because "All Hallows" is kinda fun.

But yeah...the book gives good hints and tips on how to get through the game, and places to find medi-paks and ammo and all that good stuff.

So, if you're buying a used one, i'd definately recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Not As Good As the First Two.......2002-03-19

While this book CAN be helpful, it's not as well planned or as well written as the first two Tomb Raider guides from Prima. It's easy to see why Prima decided not to continue to print this book, as its walkthrough is sparsely populated with pictures or words, comparatively. The problem with this book, as opposed to the first two, is that it almost always skips over how to get every pickup, or which items are traps or simply larks - useless to go after.

There is another book I have, "The Tomb Raider Companion," but I've misplaced it recently. I bought the Prima version, finally, because I liked the first two Prima guides and because the Companion is too wordy with not ENOUGH pictures. This makes it sometimes difficult to discern Lara's position or positioning within the game. But this review is about the Prima version; although written by the same author as the first two, it seems either that the editors decided to print less or that Mr. Ward decided that it wasn't necessary to write more. Reading over some of the other articles posted, it's difficult to understand why they thought that there was too much writing. The other book, the "Tomb Raider Companion", THAT book is too wordy...

All in all, this book is good for those who want to explore more on their own and rely less on someone else's writings, and perhaps that's why this is so much less informative than the Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II walkthrough guides -- but if someone just wanted small hints at various steps of the game, they would probably just look it up online or ask a friend instead of buying this particular walkthrough.

4 out of 5 stars to much writing.......2002-01-11

but this guide gives you lots of help but the only thing is the secrets and the guide has boxes and explains in more detail which is confusing and takes longer to complte than usual however this isnt really that much of a dilema also its interesting how it choses the levels this is worth buying yes

5 out of 5 stars tomb raider 3.......2001-12-18

hello im matthew o'boyl and im writing to you to ask for the tomb raider 3 guide

      3 out of 5 stars A bit wordy.......2001-04-27

I needed this book to get through the game but there is so much to read...I had to up the time on my screen saver between moves. Also, there is an extra level in the game that you may partake in only if you get all the secrets. Well....if you notice, in London on the Aldwych level, there are 5 secrets in that level yet only 4 are listed in the guide. I made it through the whole game and collected all the secrets in the guide yet with cathedral key in hand, I couldn't enter the bonus level. Drats! So.....I took my time in that level once again and I found it (the fifth secret)....maybe I'll share if you really want it and can't find it. Only now, I'll have to play the whole game again to earn my bonus. Sigh.

Easy read. Good, quick information. A little lacking on specifics, but a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Goes to the point.......2006-11-27

I like to read "How to" books that are concise and go to the point without making me waste time reading unnecessary fringe. Mr. Shepard, I love this book full of tips. I recently wrote a short story for children in Spanish. Now I notice my many "errors" that I plan to correct. :O) As English is my second language, the chapter on rhythm and beats is a bit difficult for me to absorb. But I will. And will use Shepard's ideas for my writing. Somebody else can do the translation if it goes to English. Thanks Mr. Shepard!

        5 out of 5 stars A Must For The Kid Writer's Bookshelf.......2006-11-17

Packed with practical tips, this concise guide - covering everything from query to contract and beyond - belongs in every children's author's library. A handy reference for beginners and pros alike.

5 out of 5 stars No Waste of Time.......2006-03-07

I have recently read several books on this subject, and this one has been the most helpful and enjoyable thus far. It follows a logical, sequential order. *The Business of Writing for Children* answered every question I have posed and a few I hadn't yet formulated. It is concise and so left Mr. Shepard time for an occassional show of his sense of humor; without compromising more of mine than I would have liked to allow. Sense of humor or time, you wonder. The answer is both.
