An Excellent Catalogue for an Uneven Exhibition.......2005-11-26
Studying museum catalogues can be an entertainment in and of itself. Some blockbuster shows featuring important and controversial artists when distilled into catalogue accompaniment give no hint as to the impact of the works, the artists, or the layout of the exhibitions. Conversely, some museums, especially those involved in a traveling exhibition, create a fine volume, well designed and executed, while the centerpiece artist is not all that impressive.
The latter is the case for AN AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST: THE ART AND LIFE OF ALSON SKINNER CLARK. Clark's life and times mirror Americana and that aspect of the writing is interesting. The problem with the topic is that Clark is a local 'hero' whose works really don't merit a retrospective as far as output is concerned. Yes, there are some nice paintings ...and there are some works better left uncurated were it not for the theme of the exhibition. Clark did not limit himself to American locales but dabbled in en plein air work in Europe and elsewhere. There is not much original thought here: Clark's style was derivative and he was but one of hundreds of painters now termed American Impressionists.
But given these observations, the catalogue makes for an enjoyable journey into a kinder time. Grady Harp. November 05
Featuring 77 color plates and 10 halftones of Clark's work.......2005-08-08
Intended as the companion artbook to a traveling exhibition, An American Impressionist: The Art And Life Of Alson Skinner Clark is the first in-depth scrutiny of the American Impressionist painter Alson Skinner Clark (1876-1949). Featuring 77 color plates and 10 halftones of Clark's work, ranging from nude figures to bustling urban centers to panoramic scenes from all over the world, An American Impressionist pairs the raw beauty and gentle imagery of the oil on canvas works with a brief discussion of Clark's life, his marriage, travels abroad, the toll World War I took upon him, his obscure retirement and the recent rediscovery of his contributions, particularly to the Impressionist tradition in California, where Clark made a name and lasting memory for himself among the local art community. Especially recommended for collectors, students, and connoisseurs of the Impressionist style.

Not only about shape, but about style, too.......2007-08-31
If you (like me) are blessed with a beautifull curvy body that looks best when it's naked, and worst when dressed to the nines, this book is for you. The best is that you can really understand the principles (if you don't, create your personal model on the Land's End website and try them out). The book will give you a perfect guideline on how to follow fashion wisely, spend less and still stay ahead of the crowd of fashion victims.
It relies heavily on black (people bring me a chair to sit down if I wear black as it makes me look like an undertaker's diploma piece), but the method of "camouflage chic" works as well with other darker colors.
Especially helpful if you sew yourself and have to make decisions on style and detailing without being able to try the garment on!
What a neat book!.......2007-07-28
This book is so cute and well written! I loved the author's sense of humor and laughed so much while reading this. She's got some great artistic principles that she applies expertly to different body styles. If you want to look thinner, don't consider losing weight (unless you need to), just dress as she suggests to look 10 pounds thinner. Great author with a realistic view of women and their body issues.
not only for soft shaped ladies! basic rules of harmonious figure.......2007-05-29
I am Italian and I sew. this means that clothing is a basic necessity for me. I am blessed with a good figure but everytime I help a friend in looking at her best, I have not been able to tell her why I insist for a certain lenght or a neckline. in this book there are the reasons why certain harmonies are so perfect and why other choices are wrong on two ladies apparently similar. It is the basic book to reinvent the proportions of the body you don't know how to look at- yours -and to look just beautiful. it is the written version of what enhainces without all the mistery aura of the "good tasted gurus". to be read and to be offered as a gift.
Basic Image Information.......2007-05-22
This book is a good place to start when interested in how to "camouflage" those body imperfections.
Look for best and dress your best.......2007-05-13
This book is filled with good advice and guidance to help someone to dress more attractively for their body type as well as look thinner. The choices one makes in purchasing clothing after reading this book are more selective and more interchangeable. The focus will be on looking for clothing that looks good on you. Also, you will know what style to look for and what color that's best for you. This book helps you to build a good wardrobe that can give you different looks with less items. If you want to look thinner and better in what you wear, then buy this book.

Here is the thing about questions: they expose more about the inquirer than they do about the one being queried. If you pay attention, the questions a woman asks will point directly to some of her deepest longings and also reveal some of what she desires most from a man. With this book as a guide, we hope that men and women can move beyond the question of "Why are women the way they are?" to see the authentic heart of a woman. A companion book to "Yup." "Nope." "Maybe." the book for women. Contains a group study guide.

VERY INSIGHTFUL, FUN BOOK!.......2007-06-20
This is a very helpful book that gave me new insights on how to relate and communicate with women. I enjoyed the humor within the book but also thought it had a lot of meaningful insight on how women think about things compared to men. Wow, we really are different, aren't we? I thought the real life examples shared by the authors made the book fun to read and helped to get across their point in a refreshing way. I wish I had read this book when I was 16. It would have come in handy.
A Must read for all married people.......2007-06-08
The authors relate hilarious stories from their own lives that make the reader feel like they are living under the same roof. The things that their wives say to them and vice versa are so similar to my own. But the powerful thing about the book is how they get to the real underlying issues in marriage. It is a careful and thoughtful explanation of how our genders are at play in our marriage and how we can redemptively resolve difficulties and make marriage a beautiful experience. I highly recommend to anyone who is married or engaged.
Best Relationship Book that I've Read.......2007-05-15
This small book is packed with helpful ideas for communicating effectively and understanding what is behind some of the questions women ask. Its an easy read as the stories the authors use as examples are often quite funny.
I read part of this book right across from my girlfriend at a coffee shop and literally was able to take a step forward in our relationship right then and there as I put into practice what I had just learned.
Get to the point already!.......2007-04-17
"Does This Dress Make Me Look Fat?" is a man's guide to understanding women and the companion book to "Yup. Nope. Maybe." which is a woman's guide to understanding their man. Both books had a hard time getting to the point and were very limited in useful information. Both revolved more around describing the authors' relationships with their spouses than giving actual, helpful ideas to couples. The back covers describe these books as funny, but the humor is often lost in the self-absorption of the authors as they detail fight after fight after FIGHT that they had as young, married and naïve couples.
At the core (if you can ever find it) there is a small amount of helpful information for the reader. However, if you would like a book that's actually worth your money, and is jam-packed with awesome, helpful tips and advice, I would recommend the books "For Women Only" and "For Men Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A huge look into the past, and how there actually came to be Powers, and where Walker/Diamond came from. Oh yeah, and the monkey shagging that obtained some amusing criticism. Excellent work. Note that this is completely lacking in dialogue, at times, but for 2001 prehistoric type reasons.
A mysterious monastery on a mountain, also features, with your inscrutable monk/lama type helping out those who find themselves in situations similar to Walker's.
Good - fills in more background but not neccessary .......2005-10-14
Good Powers story that fills in alot of background - but its misleading to think that this answers any questions as to why or where the powers come from. This is all about the backstory to Diamond and Wolf - albeit still a good Powers story. Get it if you're fan but be warned its not important in terms of the continuing storyline from the last TPB.
Another solid arc in this great series.......2005-10-02
Benis and Oeming's Powers is one of the best series out there today, dealing with cops who work on superhero-related crimes. Ruthlessly graphics, often funny, and always engaging, it's a must read for me whenever a new trade paperback is released.
Forever is nice installment of the Powers series, adding the overall mythos these creators have built. Forever is a story arc that reveals who the main character, Christian Walker, truly is, while outlining a superhero rivalry that has gone on, well, forever. It does not rise to the level of the last tome, The Sellouts, but it does manage to be a good story of revenge and loss, adding new layers to an already great series. Recommended.
Get past the monkeys.......2005-08-28
I've enjoyed the Power's series for quite some time now, and like many of my fellow fans I was a bit put off when the comic book that prominently featured monkey-lovin' was released.
You have to get past it. It's actually a vital part of a rather good story-arc. I really wish that Bendis and Oeming hadn't "altered" some of the details from earlier story-arcs, but it's still pretty darn good.
Powers at its best.......2005-08-07
This volume is brilliant storytelling, standing on its own even outside the Powers collection. While some of the Powers story arcs are straightforward or predictable, this arc is a new-classic tale of the beginnings and growth of a few superpowered individuals, and it has little to do with solving crimes (that often turn out to be somewhat unexciting in the earlier volumes). A genius reflection on its main character amidst the continuity of the issues, and just a terrific story. I would have enjoyed this volume tremendously even if I had not read any of the others.
Book Description
This delightful sketchbook presents a uniquely insightful take on the bemusement and amusement that are the inevitable reactions of the Westerner confronting Japan for the first time. Still unwilling to allow Japan's mysteries to exclude her, the author-artist illustrates her further adventures into the true meaning of the unfamiliar happenings around her, and turns culture shock into humorous appreciation. The resulting sketchbook is an excellent, user-friendly primer for anyone contemplating travel to Japan or engaged in Japanese language studies.

Learning about Japan.......2006-08-11
Clueless in Tokyo is a delightful way to learn about a wide variety of common things found in Japanese Culture. Keeps you laughing while you learn.
Amusing if a bit brief.......2003-02-05
Cute illustrations and some useful Japanese words make this an enjoyable book to read but I finished it in 10 minutes so don't expect anything more than an amusing introduction to some of the unusual things a visitor would encounter. When I go to Tokyo I will bring this with me for some light reading on the plane.
It is a clever idea though and a good supplememt to some of the drier guidebooks out there.
It is a picture book, not a travel guide..........2001-07-19
Yes, it says so in the reviews, but somehow I missed it. I thought it was a travel guide for the "clueless." I can see how it might be amusing to some Westerners though. Now I need to get a real guide book for our trip to Tokyo.... Got any recommendations?
Highly amusing and highly accurate!.......2000-07-19
The artist of this book has summed up some of the strange things that Americans will discover when visiting Japan. With headings like "Toire : Terrifying Toilets " and " Venerable Vending Machines " you can't help but chuckle along with the artist as she sees some of the strange differences between East and West. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a hearty interest in visiting Japan as it will serve as a 'cultural buffer' and ready them mentally for some of the strange sights they'll be treated to!
An EXTREMELY accessible guide 2 Japanese culture!!!!.......1999-09-22
Clueless in Tokyo is an INVALUABLE book for anyone visiting Japan, especially for the first time!! The book is beautifully illustrated by the author herself, and is full of clever and humourous comments. Do yourself a favour and replace your boring old tour guide 2 Japan w/ this fascinating and extremely interesting book!! You're guaranteed 2 laugh!
Book Description
Satan has figured in film since the very birth of cinema. The Satanic Screen documents all of Satan's cinematic incarnations, covering not only the horror genre but also a whole range of sub-genres including hardcore porn, mondo and underground film.
??
Heavily illustrated with rare still photographs, posters and arcana, the book also investigates the perennial symbiotic interplay between Satanic cinema and leading occultists (for example, Aleister Crowley), making it essential reading for anyone interested in the Black Arts and their continuing representation in populist culture.
??
Nikolas Schreck is the editor of The Manson File (1988), and director of the film Charles Manson Superstar (1989). He is a world-respected authority on occultism and true crime.

Satanic Screen = Satanism in Film.......2003-05-04
This book has been unfairly rated and reviewed for what is it. The author presents a well researched and often pompous reviews of the history of satanic references in film.
I bought this book for that exact reason, to study this history of Satan (as in the satanic form) in film. Who better to write such a book than a satanist? Of course the philosophy of the satanist is quite different than your average author, and this is definatelty made clear in this book. I can see how the average reader who was looking to simply find a nicely reviewed book on the subject would get offended in reading this book, but all I have to say is that his research into the black arts is entirely accurate, which I can't say for most of the films that have satanic origins.
Don't shoot the messenger. This book does exactly what it promises.
Another of Schreck's canibalistic appropriations.......2002-11-05
Listen well, scholars:
Nikolas Schreck, like so many "writers" today with no talent of their own, feeds off of the inspiration, originality and sweat equity of others. Schreck depends on compilations of other people's works, adding nothing new. Were I Charlie M., I'd be a little pissed that he had launched his career on my back and giving nothing in return. He, Aquino, and Flowers owe their identities to Anton LaVey, yet feign blindness to his brilliance, lest they pale by comparison to the truly creative spirit of LaVey. Schreck's writing is about as insightful as his music--NOT! He adds nothing to the body of work already in place on Satanism in the cinema.
Open wide the gates of Hell, and toss the bum out!
Hugo
Pass this one by.......2002-04-10
This dreary book is more a study of satanism (rather than a study of the devil as a screen character) and simply fails to engage the serious film enthusiast unless he enjoys Schreck's self professed satanic beliefs. If you want a study of satanism, then give it a try, but if you are looking for a legitimate film study of satanism, look elsewhere.
Misleading.......2002-03-20
This book is supposed to cover the devil as covered in motion pictures, but many of the films are not related to the devil or the devil does not appear. The author's real subject is Satanism, and it is misleading that it is marketed as a serious film stidy, which it is not. There are other books that cover the devil in films with far more class, insight, wit and knowledge, such as published by McFarland. Seek them out and skip this turkey.
Book gives the devil his due --.......2001-12-18
"The Satanic Screen" is an exhaustively researched, yet non-didactic examination on depictions of the Hoofed One in Cinema. Schreck is a purported Satanist, so he finds a great deal of material on his icon lacking. According to the author, Satan/Lucifer is a bringer of light and knowledge, so therefore he finds much of the Satanic cinema lacking. He applauds the depiction of devil worshipers in "Rosemary's Baby" (who condone rape, mayhem and murder) but decries the reactionary tone of "The Exorcist." The book remains fascinating. I didn't realize that Terrence Fisher's creaky "The Devil Rides Out" (1966) to be so authoritative or that Lugosi and Karloff's "The Black Cat (1934) was based on an incident involving The Great Fraud Aleister Crowley. The book flows very well, beautifully written, and although many can't share the author's worldview it makes for fascinating reading.

For Advanced players only.......2007-06-13
72 problems, broken into 3 groups. NT (simplest but not simple), Suit contracts, and Bonus. These problems are not easy, and go beyond the usual card reading, duck a trump to retin control, or Trump Coup. They involve something extra, such as testing the suit layouts and switching plans mid course from a ruff to a partial elimination - end play.
A couple of the hands required teh reader to make inferences about teh palcement of high cards based on the bidding that I think are not backed up by the facts. Not everyone would open a had containing Ace, King, King (10 HCP) with 4432 shape in 1st or 2nd seat. Thus teh inference that that player couldn't have a certain card really not valid. Same for a preempt (weak 2) nun-vulnerable against vulnerable. MANY players will bid a weak 2 with AJxxxx. They don't need anotehr outside king, white on red.
Some complex squeezes (I smelled them but couldn't figure out what to do), some hands where you try and scruch up an extra chance or two it increase the odds from 50% to 52% (I didnt think those hands were really taht important), but also some clever hands where you needed to figure out the shape and visualize certain possibilities.
Overall the book is a B-. Could be better, but still had some good hands.
If you are not Advanced you might not get so much out of it, though its still worth reading.

A simple, straightforward analysis of economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy.
Customer Reviews:
Very Outdated.......2007-07-19
As an undergraduate I had my doubts about this book. My studies of Economics at the graduate level confirmed my suspicion that this book is very outdated. If you're looking for a more intelligent approach to Economics, read Macroeconomics by Mankiw, or Microeconomic Analysis by Varian. Romer's Advanced Macroeconomics is also somewhat of a standard. At the very least, I encourage you to review other sources and not rely too heavily on this one book which in no way accurately portrays modern economic thought.
This ain't no economics book!.......2007-05-29
I was expecting a book on economics 101, so maybe I might understand market forces, PE ratios, stuff like that.
It's just a big argument for a libertarian government. Not even particularly good arguments either - they're all based on metaphors, like the broken window (paraphrased from memory):
'Even though they may get paid, a community does not get rich fixing broken windows. That holds the community still, it does not push it forward.'
That's a fine argument and all, but that's not teaching. Metaphors are mental manipulation... give me all the pros and cons and let me decide. Or better: give me the damn facts.
And it's outdated too. The book is 50 years old. We are so NOT in Post WWII economics.
a no interference in the market introduction to economics.......2007-05-14
The lesson of Economics in One Lesson is that any interference in economic systems that helps one group of people always ends up taking something away from another group of people. The author believes that the less interference in economic systems there is the better the economic system runs. He is against make work schemes, excessive taxes, public works, tariffs, a minimum wage, and unions. He is even critical of Social Security. This book was written originally in 1946 so there is no talk of the issue of Globalization and the numbers used are smaller than we are accustomed to, but otherwise it talks about timeless issues. I think it is important to remember that there are other ways of thinking about economics that are not so extreme in their opposition to public works, unions and a minimum wage. I also think that, although the market does correct itself without intervention and therefore the overall arguments of the author are correct, I think, for example, wages would be a lot lower if we did not have a minimum wage. Many minimum wage jobs require no skills and therefore there are lots of people to fill them so there is no competition for labor and therefore no incentive to offer higher wages. This book left me wanting to read more about economics, not just for more of the author's point of view, but also for opposing points of view.
A good libertarian primer.......2007-05-01
This book is a little outdated, and a little heavy on the libertarianism, but otherwise it's a very easy read, and I particularly like some of the stories it uses to present basic economic ideas.
Best book to understand basic economics........2007-04-23
Understanding of basic economics is almost necessary for everyone and this is the one of the best books which explains it in much simpler way. When I started reading this book, I was very curious to know the lesson the author is trying to teach in this book, and it is just not about demand and supply which many other academic economic books trying to teach you.
The author provides good insights into the consequences of the vote-bank policies framed by politicians and bureaucrats in the various governments around the world. The reader can get fair understanding of the effects to the public by the taxation of government, and different policies like trade barriers, minimum wage law, regulatory policies and more importantly effects of inflation and government policies to cause and contain inflation.
Common words like credit, spending, savings, investment are explained adequately to understand their effects on the production and individual. As author himself points out in the last chapter, though not many of these lessons are not followed by politicians around the world even now, this book is must read for them and for public to understand the repercussions of policies introduced by the government and to provide long term solutions to the public welfare.
