An Ode to Joy by Frank Kozik.......2002-12-14
The book is a continuation of a long career by an artist who literally saved rock art as a serious form of creation and helped to bring punk subculture into mainstream America. He started this stuff a VERY long time ago. Prior to his work, poster art was not considered fine art. Now its in museums and galleries all over the world - Japan, Australia, Canada, Europe, etc.... ANY poster artist and POP gallery will confirm that. All successful poster artists today, with exception to Art Chantry, are following in Kozik's footsteps, and his work is respected for that - gaudy and mean and abnoctious as it is, afterall, thats rock-n-roll! He paved the way for poster art and took it to a completely new level never previously seen in history; poster art/artist as art/pop star - thats why we collect the book. I bought the book and do think some things could be different, but its totally worth owning it and I look at it for my own art inspiration all the time.

Too much--or not enough?.......2001-07-27
I'd liken this to the headache of hanging a baroque or Queen Vickie period painting: yes, we the modern, general viewing public may yearn to see the work hung on a clean, white wall--as art for art's sake--but an art historian would want to see it in its proper context, in a room loaded to the gills with seafoam velvet wallpaper, cherry red furnishings, gilt bric-a-brac and the like.
Admittedly Kozik has become well-known enough that his work is now hung in galleries on those same clean, white walls, but I find it boring in such tasteful surroundings! Perhaps this is because I remember Kozik posters in their early context, plastered on walls and electric posts against generations of competing punk rock posters, well before Kozik became a post-pop art darling and his work started selling to collectors.
Never mind. Kozik's artwork IS overproduced, and commercially so; that's part of it's devilish charm (?). It deserves and looks right against the shrine of weird, self-referencing, self-aggrandizing background noise that ODE TO JOY makes. Busy, ugly, distracting, obnoxious, but right!
As for the quality of Kozik's recent work in and of itself, it's true that it has have lost some of the edge of his earlier work.
But that's to be expected. With his best indie clientele moving to fame, fortune and MTV (with or without his help?), Kozik the poster artist is facing the music that he is much too popular a talent to create and publish as a pariah anymore. Call it the loss of street credibility--after all, you don't see his posters pasted, unprotected, to building walls in bad neighborhoods much anymore!
I would never call Kozik a "sell-out" for his success (what a rotten, jealous term that is!), but I do think he might broaden his scope, evolve with his clientele--beginning by calling himself an artist instead of a poster artist. At least as long as he's going to hang his work on those clean, white gallery walls...
Disappointing but intriguing.......2000-11-21
Kozik's recent stuff isn't up to the level of his earlier work --he'd probably be the first to admit this! This book is certainly worth getting for Kozik completists and those interested in poster art's slide into the 21st century.
If you DON'T have the first Kozik book, "Man's Ruin," GO GET IT NOW!!!

If it sounds like this collection gets a bit preachy, it does, and plot continuity suffers as a result. But those of us who have come to know and love Spider and his mad quest for the truth aren't likely to stop reading. As director Darren Aronofsky (_Pi,_ _Requiem for a Dream_) says in his introduction, 'Profanity + anger + revolution + cynicism + drugs + cigarettes + truth + justice - fair = Spider Jerusalem. . . . A true original.'

A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a collection of essays that set out to seriously explore the vast landscape of the Star Wars cultural phenomenon. Premiere magazine editor Glenn Kenny has complied 18 well-crafted pieces from a wide array of pop culture aficionados, including ribald filmmaker Kevin Smith and Onion satirist Todd Hanson. The pieces range from serious scholarship to self-deprecating geek confessionals. Some--such as "Pale Starship, Pale Rider: The Ambiguous Appeal of Boba Fett" by Tom Bissell--tend toward the esoteric minutiae of fandom, and are sure to please the rabid devotee. But most are kindly universal and range far beyond the spacey subject matter into more human territory. Thankfully, most of the writers don't take themselves too seriously as they make the jump to hyperspace. Thus, the collection is a pleasure to read and an interesting foray into the passionate media culture surrounding the Star Wars universe. Overall, an excellent intellectual exercise for anyone who has ever found escape in a galaxy far, far away. --Jeremy Pugh
Book Description
A Galaxy Not So Far Away is the first ever exploration of the [ innumerable ways the Star Wars films have forever altered our cultural and artistic landscape. Edited by Glenn Kenny, a senior editor and critic at Premiere magazine, this singular collection allows some of the nations most acclaimed writers to anatomize, criticize, celebrate, and sometimes simply riff on the prismatic aftereffects of an unparalleled American phenomenon. Jonathan Lethem writes of the summer he saw Star Wars twenty-one times as his mother lay dying of cancer. Neal Pollack chips in with the putative memoir of a certain young man having problems with his father, written in the voice of Holden Caulfield. Erika Krouse ponders the code of the Jedi Knight and its relation to her own pursuit of the martial arts. New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell meditates upon the mysterious figure Lando Calrissian.A classic assemblage of pop writing at its best, A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a book for everyone who loves Star Wars films and seeks to understand just what it is about these films that has so enchanted an entire generation of filmgoers.Customer Reviews:

Not So Long Ago, Pretty Close to Home........2003-02-17
This book is not a collection of essays about "What STAR WARS means to me" (though there are a few of those in here). Instead, it is a book illustrating just how huge and powerful the little space opera that could has influenced our society. This is a great book for most STAR WAR fans or for anyone interested in popular culture.

Easy to follow strategy guide.......2002-10-06
I'm one of those players who doesn't have great reflexes and normally gets sliced to ribbons playing a game like this. But thanks to Birlew's guide, I was able to survive some of the toughest bosses, bad reflexes and all. The book points out the bosses's strengths and weaknesses, how to attack them and how to avoid them, as every good game guide should.
Oh, yeah, I did find one mistake in Birlew's guide: he states that you can't purchase untouchables (items that temporarily make you invincible). In fact, untouchables can be purchased at any time, though it'll cost you. Perhaps this was a change in the game that was implemented after Birlew's guide went to press.
..........2001-12-12
This guide is defenitely good. Anyways, I read the other reviews, and Dan Birlew didn't do the Xenogears guide nor did David Cassady, it was Ronald Wartow, its right there on the fron cover. The maps are easy to read while I do admit they get tiresome every guide does. I know the maps aren't done by Dan Birlew but still they could use a little work. I look more at the detail in the walkthrough rather than how flashy the maps and screenshots are.
The walkthrough helps you out a lot and doesn't give off any spoilers at all and gets right to the point. I like this guide because the walkthrough is put together organized and doesn't look like it was rushed to get out. Its 160 pages and the guide has extremely good detail to it. Unlike the Prima (only 90 pages) and VERSUS BOOKS (112 pages) this guide has a ton of info.
I'd recomend this guide for anybody who likes strategy guides as much as I do.
Thorough and Concise.......2001-11-21
Very good guide much better than all the others.......2001-11-14
Anyway, the guide really seems to live up to my expectations. Detailed maps of EVERY AREA unlike some of the other guides, and they pin-point the location of items and blue orb fragment. Not to mention that the strategy is very good as well. The maps are colorful and very detailed.
The walkthrough is well done giving you a brief details on bosses. For each boss they show you a suggested Life Gauge and a suggested Devil Trigger. Now thats something that I found really helpful in this guide.
The guide covers all the secrets including how to lock hidden characters and game modes! The guide also features an art gallery and exclusive Interviews! Again, it doesn't hurt to read them!
Overall, this is probably the best DMC guide out there. Much more detail and organization went into the walkthrough. Forget VERSUS BOOKS, this is your perfect guide to DMC!
