About to be owned by a Rex!.......2005-12-31
I was given this book as a gift in preparation for my new Cornish Rex kitten. I found it very informative. The author only confirmed my interest in having one of these incredible cats with personality plus++. The most important fact, for me, was her discussion of this breed's low tolerance to the pre-anesthetic, Ketamine. For the "pet quality" owner who will be spaying or neutering their Rex, this is certainly an important topic to discuss pre-operatively with your veterinarian.
Excellent book on Cornish Rexes.......2001-03-20
Greta's book is great. It is extremely informative. This is a great book for people with Cornishes in their family or ones who want to have one in their family. I learned so much more about my cat since I got her book. Excellent photos! A++++
it answered breed-specific questions.......2001-02-22
when i first got my two cornish rex, i read all that i could find on the cornish rex breed, and i discovered that there were no comprehensive books on them. i really needed some tips + how-to's specific to rexes. fortunately, greta's book provides that. the text is informative and easy to read, as well as entertaining. thanks, greta! from one owner who's happier + a little more confident in her cat care now.
A great book about those mutant cats!.......2001-02-21
This book is a wonderful reference for the Cornish Rex owner (really someone owned by a Cornish Rex!) or for people considering taking one of these balls of energy and loving, non-stop attention into their lives. These cats are a little different... and Greta Huls takes you through background, grooming, feeding, healthcare and breed standards in a very interesting, straightforward and informative way. For instance, the information on the breed's intolerance to pre-op drugs is invaluable and possibly a lifesaver. In addition, the wonderful photographs perfectly illustrate the Cornish Rex's beauty and character.
Great book for owners/lovers of Cornish Rex cats.......2001-02-21
As a devoted breeder of this wonderful breed of cats, I can wholeheartly recommend Greta's new book. She did her homework quite well and picked many breeders brains to come up with a great finished product. And a very much needed book for this breed. A+++++++++

This is a children's book.......2007-06-27
I was looking for information on Cornish Rex cats as I have two of them. It was not obvious from the description that this is a children's oriented book.
But what's the error?.......2005-03-02
Very tantalizing to say there's only one error (to the reviewer's knowledge) and then not disclose it. It is better to light one candle than curse the darkness.
Good introduction for kids.......2003-04-01
I was hesitant to get this book since the Devon Rex book in this series was filled with factual errors. This book is much better (I only found one error) and is a good introduction to this crazy breed for kids. It is clearly not meant for adults since the language is simple and very basic. My only real complaint is that the same cats are used repeatedly in the photos and I wish they used more cats to show the breed's variety.

Book Description
Bear witness to teenager Buffy Summers`s transformation from simple high school student to super Vampire Slayer! Follow Buffy`s trials and tribulations as she comes to accept her destined role to thwart the legions of the undead from spreading their veil of evil across Los Angeles. Adapted from creator Joss Whedon`s original screenplay from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer feature film, The Origin updates the material to match the tone and characters of the hit television series, making this the official Buffy launching pad!
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
This is Buffy's story in Los Angeles. A mostly vapid high school girl, she runs into Merrick, and he explains the whole vampire situation.
When Lothos the old flouncy vamp turns up, quite a few people start dying, or becoming not-living. This includes one of her friends.
It takes a fairly convincing act of arson to get rid of 'em.
Pass On This One, Buy the Omnibus Instead.......2007-08-03
This, it seems, is just what a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would want to read. It's a faithful adaptation of Joss Whedon's original script for the "Buffy" movie that, to be kind, was ruined by the director and Donald Sutherland. One would think that this version of Buff's origin would be foolproof. It depicts Buffy as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Merrick as the show's version, not the movie's, AND it follows Whedon's script closely. However, not all is well with this trade paperback.
One, the most obvious problem is length. What should've been a six issue mini series was squeezed into three, which beat the pacing black and blue and hindered the amount of involvement we readers could get in the story. Lothos, instead of the looming threat he should've been, is nothing more than a run of the mill vamp to us, as he is never fleshed out to be more than that. Another problem is the depiction of the vampires here. The story is supposed to be updated here to be consistent with the Buffy-television universe, but many of the vampires are actually colored green. Yes, GREEN. As in blue mixed with yellow. Another species of vampires are these bat-like horned creatures that we never meet in the show who are also green. It would be great if they were distinguished to be DEMONS, not vamps, but within this short series, they're referred to as vampires and are also killed by stakes.
I can't say the comic didn't hold my interest though. The Buffy/Merrick relationship, as different as it was from Buffy/Giles, was one of the most captivating aspects of "The Origin." I do wish it had the chance to develop over a longer miniseries, but what was done here was executed nicely. The climax, Pike's allure, and Buffy's alienation from her friends also made for good reading, though the Buffy/Pike relationship developed way too quickly for me.
I'd recommend passing on "Buffy: The Origin" for now. If you just by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus, Volume One", you can find "The Origin" collected in there, with many other Buffy miniseries for a much cheaper price.
5/10
Buffy gets a makeover.......2006-10-16
Once thought to be legends only, they walk among us still, keeping to the shadows and avoiding the light of day. They were once ordinary people, someone you might see on the street, but something ... changed. Yes, they are fans of both "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the movie, and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the long-running television series. Rarer even than those who claim to like both versions of M*A*S*H, these dual-natured Buffyites have longed wrestled with the inconsistencies that exist between the two. Writers Christopher Golden and Daniel Brereton, with the aid of artist Joe Bennett, decided to solve that problem in the comics.
The popular Dark Horse series of Buffy books proved the perfect place to build a bridge between Los Angeles and Sunnydale. Working with creator Joss Whedon's original movie screenplay, Golden and Brereton wrote a version of the movie that takes the inconsistencies into account: there are now many Watchers, instead of just one; vampires put their evil faces on when attacking and go *poof* into dust when they are staked; and Buffy looks more like Sarah Michelle Gellar than Kristy Swanson. Oh, and she finally gets to burn down her high school gym.
Fans of the movie will recognize many of the memorable lines -- "Does Elvis talk to you? Tell you to do things? Do you see spots?" -- but may be disappointed at just how much of the story was cut out. At a mere 80 pages, "The Origin" doesn't have room for basketball games, "retro" jackets and little kittens to snack on. Maybe it should have been a little longer. Otherwise, it does a good job of carrying the tone of the movie; Buffy is not yet so serious or angst-ridden as she will become in the series, retaining her So-Cal attitude and humor.
There are downsides, certainly: the Watcher Merrick, unfortunately, loses the wonderful eccentricity that Donald Sutherland brought to the role; Luke Perry's reformed stoner Pike never gets fully developed; and vampire minion Amilyn lacks the brilliant comedic flair of Paul Reubens. But I guess those are sacrifices we must make so that Buffy has room for a complete retrofit.

Rushed.......2005-09-08
While the idea for this comic is brilliant it lacks clarity. The story was rushed and glossed over. I feel that if I wasn't already familiar with the story of the film that I could not have followed it. I was much releived when I found that while based on Joss Whedon's original screen play this comic was not actually done by him. Whedon has shown a remarkable talent in the feild of comics so far. (see Fray and Astonishing X-Men) So I suggest buying this comic only if you are as die-hard a Buffy fan as I am, in order to compleate your collection.
Better than the movie, but..........2005-01-03
Ever since I read about this graphic novel I wanted to own it. While I thought the movie was decent, it paled incredibly to the wonderful Buffy show and I was anxious to see what writer Joss Whedon originally intended the show to be like. Unfortunately, when I actually got down to reading the graphic novel I was dissappointed.
Whedon is an excellent writer - there are times when his clever dialogue shines through, as well as his wit (I love how Buffy eventually destroys her foes). Unfortunately, the same can not be said of the adaptors. The story, as well as the art, feels incredibly cramped and rushed. I would have loved to have gotten to know characters such as Merrick and Pike, but the book seemed to be more concerned with advancing the plot rather than deepening the characters. It feels like an adaption, and not a true story on its own.
I do like the book to an extent, and am glad it exists. Still, reading this cramped graphic novel I wondered if just reading Whedon's original script would have been better.
P.S. Why were the vampires green?

Every Reader Should Own This.......2006-10-09
I can only add to what others have written. Each of these "ShrinkLits" (Shrunken Literature) is unbelievably clever, but without being formulaic.
Another reviewer mentioned Beowulf. Sure, I liked the couple Danish but I laughed out loud at, "Later on as King of Geats, He performed prodigious feats. Till he met a foe too tough (Non-Beodegradable stuff)."
Or how about The Count of Monte Cristo, which ends "Tremendous wealth helps one compete. Persistence pays, revenge is sweet. The combination's hard to beat."
The Bridge of San Luis Rey - a terrible book and a worse movie - in its ShrinkLit form comes out a beautiful poem.
I don't know why Maurice Sagoff never made a bigger splash, but this one book is a winner.
Humorous if you are familiar with the work, otherwise could be incomprehensible.......2006-07-07
A shrinklit is a short piece of humorous prose that is a very brief synopsis of a major literary piece. They were defined by the Sagoff and fifty shrinklets appear in this book. Two of the smaller examples are:
"The Communist Manifesto", by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
Workers, unite!
Workers, you knight-harassed, feudal lord-ridden serfs in an earlier day;
Workers, you night-toiling vassals of bourgeois exploiters of today;
Workers, you nigh-to-death victims of class war, arise - grab the power away!
Workers, unite!
"The Raven", by Edgar Allan Poe
Raven lurches
In, perches
Over door.
Poet's bleary
Query -
"Where's Lenore?"
Creepy bird
Knows one word:
"Nevermore."
While I found the poems fun to read, if you aren't familiar with the work being referenced, then it is quite likely that the humor will be lost on you. I am not saying that you need to have read the work, but you must know the basics of the work to appreciate the references. For example, without knowing the story of Don Quixote, the poem that makes reference to windmill monsters will be incomprehensible.
Fun for People with Too Much Education!!!.......2005-02-24
This book is FUN!
Here's a test:
"Monster Grendel's taste is plainish.
Brekfast? Just a couple Danish"
If you got the joke in the rhymed couplet above, you will thoroughly enjoy this small book. It will surely amuse anyone who has both love for the classics and a sense of humor.
Its condensed and witty renditions ofttimes shine new light on old works. It's a fine little gift for the person who has read everything!
Absolutely Hilarious.......1999-08-23
This truly amusing book will take you back to your days of required reading and give you a new appreciation of these works. While not at all a replacement for these classics. Students should read these too in an effort to 'not hate' what they are reading. The cover art is funny too. Check out the picture for "Antigone"

Book Description
Since the first SF film produced for television-1968's Shadow on the Land-nearly 600 of the films initially released to television have had science fiction, fantasy, or horror themes. Featuring superheroes, monsters, time travel, magic, and other elements of their big screen counterparts, these films range from the phenomenal to the forgettable, from low-budget two-hour films to blockbuster mini-series. Some, like The Ewok Adventure, were based on theatrical releases, while others, like Babylon 5, have developed into very popular series.
Information on all of these films released in America from 1968 through 1998 is collected here. Entries are arranged alphabetically and include cast and credits, a plot synopsis, and qualitative commentary, as well as notes on interesting points (e.g., future stars, salutes to other films). Appendices include a listing of films that, while not strictly genre movies, include some science fiction, horror, or fantasy elements; a chronology of the films; and a guide to alternate video or syndication titles.
Customer Reviews:
Save your hard-earned money!!.......2002-03-07
First of all, this book is vastly over-priced. This would be acceptible if it were worthwhile. It isn't. Part of the blame lies with me, because I didn't take the title literally. What I was hoping for was an exhaustive guide to horror-related TV films from 1964-present. Most of the films would've hopefully been culled from the '70s time period, because that was the golden era for made-for-TV horror/suspense. Let me be clear about this: The author completely ignores the many great TV suspense films of the '70s (Now that would be a review book worth buying). Instead what we get is a book filled with mostly irrelevant recent films, mainly of the sci-fi/fantasy genre (little horror). For those whose interest this piques, go for it.
Another substandard aspect is the "reviews" themselves: Voluminous plot descriptions, followed by very brief, uninspired critical comments.
The only positive thing I can say about this book is that the layout is very attractive and uncluttered. Good job there.
I reiterate: for anyone considering this book, the title says all; cyborgs and such things is about all you're going to get.
I ordered this book sight unseen (often a big mistake) with great anticipation, since there simply are no other review books covering TV films, but my copy of CYBORGS, SANTA CLAUS, AND SATAN is going straight to the local used book store; forthwith. It can sit there gathering dust rather than on my bookshelf.
Excellent survey.......2000-07-18
When you are ready to see a movie on television, this is an indispensable guide. In a clear, brisk manner you can determine what the movie is about, with ruining the story for viewing. Even though the author's opinions are clear, they do not overwhelm the facts presented.
Filled with Information and FUN to read.......2000-06-06
This is an encyclopedia that is actually fun to read from the first page to the last appendix as well as supplying information for everyone from trivia buffs to serious movie scholars. Most cinema encyclopedias give scant information about TV genre movies but Sherman gives us a wealth of details in this compilation of everything fantastic.
Do you need to know how many versions of Dicken's Christmas Carol have been produced? Or, maybe you are looking for the name of the writer who adapted Bradbury's Martian Chronicles? Or, maybe you just want to read the entry for Jack Palance's Dracula? These are just a few of the tidbits that can be gleaned from these packed pages. The cast and credits for all movies as well as synopses and commentary are easily accessed. The book iss indexed and complete including highlighting unknown actors who later became famous in hit series or movies. From cover to cover, it is packed with a wealth of information. (Did you know The Omen IV was a
made for TV movie that tried to continue the franchise on the small screen?)
Sherman's book fills a void for every serious TV and movie buff. An encyclopedia like this has never been offered before that covers this time period and subject and is done as well. The last similar book was published in the mid-seventies and consequently leaves many wonderful movies like the Babylon 5 specials out. Sherman is a fan of science fiction, fantasy, and horror and it shows in his attention to the details that every fan wants to know. I used it just today to look up something about Trilogy of Terror! Sherman's book is well worth the money.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible biography.......2005-11-10
I admit from the outset that I am a longtime Clapton fan. I have read just about every book and magazine article written about him over the last 30 years and have viewed many of the video bios about him. This book is by far the worst. It seems to me that the author had a negative bias from the beginning.
Clapton is no saint and his past is what it is. Nevertheless, it appears that the author interviewed only those people who had a grudge or bone to pick. From the rather unflattering cover picture to his reviews of EC's work this biography is nothing more than an anti-Clapton diatribe. Even his compliments are backhanded. Sanford's claim that he "came to have a quite genuine and deep sympathy for [Clapton]" rings very hollow. He seems to have found every reason to trash the man and the majority of his work.
Those interested in a balanced view should avoid this book.
As Appealing As A Train Wreck.......2005-07-07
I recently read three books on Eric Clapton's life - I've always loved his music and wanted to know more about him as a person. This book was the absolute worst!
Like passing a train wreck, it is so awful you keep looking even though everything in your heart and mind tells you to turn away. Who knows how much of the nasty gossip and innuendo in this trashy, mean-spirited account of a man's life is true, or even half true? The thing that the reader is left wondering is why did this man, who has a monumental dislike for his subject, choose to write about him? Surely he cannot have made much money on it. The book is badly written as well, and repetitious to the point that I began recognizing certain phrases as they were cloned time and again.
Of the three books I read, the one by Schumacher was the best, being well-documented, respectful but not fawning, and not afraid to be critical when the situation called for it.
The third book I read was Eric Clapton - In His Own Words. This was full of wonderful pictures, but rather sparse in revealing the deeper details of Eric Clapton's life and career. I don't fault him for this - he has had a complicated and not always wonderful time of it in life, and it must be extremely difficult for such a private person to bare his soul for the paying public. But still, it was too incomplete and cautious to be really informative.
Please save your money and don't waste it on the Sandford book, get the Schumacher one instead!
Mercenary journalisn at its worst.......2003-06-16
The author clearly received marching orders from a random publisher to write about Clapton...this book started on a premise and the author spends the rest of the book trying to prove/defend that premise.
What was the premise of this book? Namely that Clapton is a dysfunctional guitar god. Read between the history and hearsay and it is abundantly clear Clapton suffers from alcoholism/addiction. His actions and psychological pathology make that point strikingly clear. It doesnt make what Clapton did right - far from it. But the obvious wasnt the intention of this author. His goal was guitar god on a skewer.
This book spends so little time on the actual music...Derek & the Dominoes, Cream, Blind Faith that you wonder if the author even knows its significance.
All in all - crummy journalism...worse book.
Not Definitive, But a Good Counterbalance........2002-05-10
This book is the perfect counterbalance to Ray Coleman's hilariously fawning autohrized biography, "Clapton."
Coleman's and Sanford's books are polar opposites in the treatment of the subject and somehere between the two extremes a fairly good picture of Clapton emerges.
If you seek objectivity, read this one first. It is a harsher, more detached, yet no less accurate, assesment of his life and musical influence.
If you are a Clapton fan seeking to reenforce your perception of, "Clapton as God", read Coleman's book.
Why did the author write this book?.......2002-01-03
I am not sure why the author wrote this book except to make money. It would seem the very crime he accuses Clapton of committing, he commits in this book- namely, not really loving what he is doing. The author indicates having sympathy for Clapton, but what comes across seems to be very distorted. While I do not know all the gossip about Clapton, this book reduces his life to simply adding up 'good' and 'bad' acts. Yes, Clapton by all reports was not a healthy adult (I don't know about now) and not well integrated. The author, rather then developing this lack of integration, becomes overly obessed with the 'bad Clapton'. If Clapton's playing was never anything but copying the old blues masters, how can the author complain that his newer music doesn't evoke the excitment and innovation of his earlier playing. You can't have it both ways. The author takes acts of kindness and indicates they are really self-serving acts. I don't want to defend Clapton, but rather wished the author would have viewed his subject in a neutral manner and integrated his upbring/childhood, how he dealth with life and how he made music as opposed to taking the easy way out by doing the 'Mommy Dearest' routine.

Rewarding for the crostic fan who has mastered Middleton.......1999-08-05
Duerr's choice of clues are either rewarding or fun, or both. They are not trivial. His choice of quotes, about 250 letters average, make for long clues and more challenging puzzles than those found in the Sunday papers. Once you get on to his style, you are spoiled for the rest.

Fantastic Book! One week in and already far less stress!.......2007-10-04
I've practiced David Allen's system for about a year now, but still couldn't get the "techy" end of it working smoothly. After only a week on Michael's system, my stress level is low, I'm leaving the office at the end of the day with my Daily Task list empty, and my inbox flutters around 5-6 items (previously getting my inbox under 100 was an accomplishment). Michael walks you step-by-step through the implementation of the system. My only words of advice: If you're going to do it, commit 100% -- do not ease up or the inherent trust you have in the system will collapse.
Total Workday Control.......2007-10-03
This book is a great way to learn how to manage your Outlook e-mail in an easy to follow, step-by-step methodology. I had taken David Allen's seminar, Getting Things Done, and this book really helped to close the loop on implimentation. Well worth the time and money spent.
Outstanding Book!.......2007-10-02
I am a professor at a major research university in the US. I have struggled with dealing with multiple tasks and emails for years...until I have embraced the fantastic system described in this great book. If you use Outlook as your major portal for email and tasks, you MUST read this book. The approach here is logical and work for you. It is that good.

This really works.......2007-09-30
I have been using Michael Linenberger's system for about 3 months now and my productivity has increased tenfold. With this system, I have a way to track important tasks and I feel that I am on top of my job.
Finally! A 'Real World' Implementation of Outlook that really works!.......2007-09-22
I TOTALLY agree with all of the 5 star reviews...after struggling with David Allen's Getting Things Done (GTD) system for 6-9 months I finally found what really works.
In this book you'll get an actual implementation that works--meaning a regularly empty inbox (and I deal with hundreds of emails a week), a fantastic way to organize and systematically get dozens of tasks (including those you delegate to others with a perfect way to close open loops) w/ a corresponding sense of accomplishment and feeling of being on top of it that is incredible.
I have done it all: Day Timer, Covey's system, used Palm Pilots/Treo's, etc and nothing has ever even come close to Michael Linenberger's system.
I have already implemented this with two of my direct reports and they are ecstatic with the fact that they too have a empty inbox, no more sticky notes, etc.
My only request is for the author to get out a version of this book that is 100% targeted/customized for Outlook 2007 ASAP.
