The story of the creation of sculptor Antony Gormley's Insiders in remote Western Australia.
Early one morning in December 2002, under the searing heat of the sun, internationally renowned British sculptor Antony Gormley stepped onto the surface of a vast, million-year-old salt lake in one of the remotest parts of Australia. He was there to install a remarkable work that would stretch over ten square kilometers and consist of more than fifty sculptures. It was the final act in an exhausting six-month process that had seen him take nude body scans of the residents of a nearby town and produce bizarre, alien-like statues of the inside of each person, which he was now to place across the salt-encrusted expanse of Lake Ballard, Western Australia.
Recently completed and drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world to its remote site, the work is stunning in its effect. It begins with Gormley receiving the permission of local Aboriginal elders for his work and persuading the people of Menzies to take part, and follows with the hazardous casting and back-breaking installation of the sculptures. Photographs, maps, and drawings show the entire process in detail, while commentaries from members of the project team explain its different stages. 225 illustrations, 200 in color.

I don't think that I can say anymore than whats alreasy been said about how ABSOLUTELY GREAT this book is.
It really is a great resource to own. It has everything from layout (which one is the best and which ones aren't), to resume, to interview information. It also encourages you to think out of the box a bit by showing you what everyone wlse os doing.
Once agian excellent resource for up-an-coming fashion designers/students and even those who have left and are returning to the fashion industry.

I purchased this book to help me with my portfolio layout for acceptance to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Although I needed to follow FITs guidelines, I feel that I gained a lot of great knowledge and excellent ideas and inspiration by referencing this book before submitting my portfolio to FIT. I am proud to say that I was accepted and will now be referencing the book to put together my portfolio for interviews in the industry.

It chocked full of great tidbits and even provides several portfolio options for the novice beginner. This is an excellent book for anyone in the field of fashion or textile design who needs to make presentations to clients. Plenty of information on how to organize your thought processes as well as give your presentations impact. I would most certainly recommend this book to someone just starting out in the fashion industry. Even seasoned professionals could gain some new information on becoming more creative in their presentation of their product lines.

after searching endlessly for this book i found it quite sad that all the editorial hype turned out untrue. the book has a few tips but nothing really original and rewarding about it.

This slim little volume features everything you'd ever want to know about one of your favorite Simpsons characters, Bart. The book opens with a timeline reviewing all the significant milestones in Bart's life. The various "Bart Zones" sections describe in detail some of Bart's most-visited sites, including the school cafeteria and his tree house. Also featured are significant people in Bart's life, from his school friends and enemies to the girls who have stolen his heart. Of course, a book without Bart wouldn't be complete without some mischievousness, so you'll also get some ideas for making prank telephone calls as well as suggestions for Bart's "Dream Tattoos." Finally, the book begins and ends with Bart's Top 40 and his Bottom 40, respectively. A great stocking stuffer for any die-hard Simpsons fan!

Not only have I throughly enjoyed this tale relating the author's brief career "below stairs", but I've lent it around and everyone who's read it has loved it too. Highly recommended for "upstairs/downstairs" types, for humor, for those who are interested in mid 20 century london below stairs life, or for Monica Dickens fans -- grab her "Talking of Horses" too.

"One Pair of Hands" by Monica Dickens clearly demonstrates that writing skills are genetic. Like her great-grandfather Charles, Monica Dickens knows how to write well. The book is charming. It chronicles her life during her twenties when she decides to try her hand at domestic service out of sheer boredom. As they say, hilarity ensues! Readers who have ever made a complete mess in the kitchen or have ever had a stingy boss can relate whole-heartedly to her trials and tribulations.

An quick and easy to read book, but thouroughly fascinating. Monica Dickens describes the life of a cook-general in 1930s England. The upper classmen she meets are described excellently. She meets a lazy bachelor, enigmatic owner of a vast country estate, and a kind family, her last employees. This book is not long and engages readers. The only thing i didn't like was that the only personal reflection included in the book was left to the end. The rest of the book was devoted to her life and the people she meets. However, i recommed this excellent book.
What a Hoot!!.......2002-01-02
This was one of the most delightful books I have read in ages. Monica Dickens (great-granddaughter of Charles), despite her privileged upbringing, despite being presented at Court as a debutante, is bored and has little desire to do the rounds of social events expected of a young upper class girl in the mid 1930s. And so she decides to try her hand at domestic service. If you have ever enjoyed watching the wonderful "Upstairs Downstairs" series or reading other tales which reflect the upstairs downstairs lives of the British class system, this is for you. It is light, entertaining and the author writes so fluidly, it has inspired me to begin reading more of her works.

The Sound of Disappointment.......2001-02-21
This, the only widely available volume on the great films of Robert Wise, is a tremendous disappointment. Each film receives its own chapter consisting of photos and a brief quotation from Wise himself. Although some chapters are informative,Wise's comments often seem distant and non-committal, as if he were hesitant to reveal his true feelings about the films he made and the people with whom he worked. Most tragically, these miniscule quotations do not enrich the experience of viewing the films themselves. Both Robert Wise and his vast body of work deserve a lengthy biography and detailed critical study. Unfortunately, this is neither.

Carol Binkowski has put together a comprehensive and enjoyable guidebook. Her exhaustive list of places in New York that have significance in the city's musical history makes absorbing reading, even if one has no intention of actually visiting all of these places. The opening chapters on New York's musical history are necessarily somewhat superficial, but in-depth research is not the point here. This volume is thus a perfect reference for the music lover who wants to do a walking tour of significant places and locations in the Big Apple.

The author brings to life so many sights in New York in such detail. She cross-references sights so you can see how they relate to each other. I did not know that some of these locations existed. This book is useful for the tourist or for anyone that wants to learn about musical New York. The book is divided in such a way that you can pick an area and explore to your delight. She also includes historical facts that are not necessarily known by most people. Highly recommend book plus it is easy to put in your briefcase or pocketbook.
