Good Resource.......2007-09-24
This book is a good resource for source materials on Modern Art. Usually anthologies give me the willies, but this one is quite comprehensive. I prefer to get my material directly from the source. This gives someone who is unfamiliar with art history a jumping off point for the more serious criticism about this time period in art.
an illuminating collection of essays.......1999-02-02
Pungent and profoundly moving, the introductory sequences to these seminal essays establish new levels of critical consciousness in that melancholy discipline known as art history. Frascina and Harris, two of our most exalted and distinguished cultural historians, provide a comprehensive survey of the culture-politics interface in C20th society. Consistently devastating and endlessly locked into the real critical issues, this is essential reading for all students of modern visual culture.

Book Description
Modern Art and Modernism presents a selection of texts by the major contributors to debate on this subject, from Baudelaire and Zola in the nineteenth century to Greenberg and T. J. Clark in our own times. It offers a balanced section of essays by contributors to the mainstream of Modernist criticism, representative examples of writing on the themes of abstraction and expression in modern art, and a number of important contributions to the discussion of aesthetics and the social role of the artist. Several of these are made available in English translation for the first time, and others are brought together from a wide range of periodicals and specialized collections.

Knitting has made a thoroughly modern comeback, and Hollywood designer Suss Cousins is leading the way. Suss has invented a new vocabulary of an old art, and in the process developed a passionate following of young, hip knitters, including some of Hollywood's hottest stars: Rose McGowan, Julia Sweeney, Laurence Fishburne, and Bill Cosby among them.
Bringing her ideas to a book for the first time, Suss invites knitters new and accomplished to make offbeat and colorful projects that are both elegant and wearable. Thirty projects with complete step-by-step instructions and illustrations are featured in Hollywood Knits, happily modeled by icons of Hollywood chic, such as Julianne Moore and Chanel model Kirsty Hume. Hollywood Knits closes with a resource guide that lists where you can buy quality yarns and Suss designs nationwide.

A Great Designer!.......2007-04-10
I love this book because the designs are simple and allow the new fabulous yarn to shine. You don't have to knit very complicated patterns to make very stylish garments and this is one of the best books I have seen to make this statement. I have also ordered some of her yarn and it is wonderful.
Error not corrected even on website.......2006-06-09
The patterns are all so simplistic that it seems to imply that Hollywood types are all ADD-afflicted. There is a difference between a simple, timeless pattern that lets the beauty of the yarn shine, and a crude, poorly written one. Unfortunately the patterns of this book falls into the latter category.
Too bad that I gave one of the patterns, the leather tie cardigan, the benefit of the doubt and started knitting it. The instructions omitted several rows at the top of the sleeve so that the finished piece measures 13" rather than the specified 17"! I looked for corrections on her website. Even on the corrections page, this glaring error was not corrected. How poorly written and edited can a book get?!
The copy I use is a library copy. Even then, it is not worth the investment of my time.
Pretty Yarn Good Book...(groan now for cheesy pun...).......2006-01-24
I initially bought Suss Cousin's "Hollywood Knits:Style" and then purchased this, her first book. I was attracted to both of the books patterns and color combinations. The patterns are organized by difficulty level and the 'Cinchy for Starters' patterns really are quite easy to finish while the 'Hot Knitters' patterns definitely require more experience. I think my one of my favorites in this particular book is the Knit Knitting Bag...It's very fun and funky. Okay...so the reasons I only rated it three stars...
I find the commentary and captions for the photos a bit self-aggrandizing for the author. After reading how she came up with this or that pattern for this or that actor or film got old after about the fifth reference. Also, the yarns she utilizes and recommends are, of course, ALL Suss yarns and there is no yarn weight indicated should you not want to use Suss yarns. Finally, there are fantastic knitting books coming out seemingly daily with similar patterns plus some really innovative patterns included that make a lot of the patterns in this book appear kind of commonplace. Overall, I gave it three stars...I like it alot but, the more I progress in my own knitting experience, the more I find myself searching for other sources of inspiration.
UGH!.......2005-11-12
Incessent name dropping and unoriginal patterns loaded with mistake after mistake that only be made using "suss" yarn -- give me a break...don't bother with this one and save your money.
I really want to like this book..........2005-06-21
After knitting several patterns from this book, I'm a bit frustrated. I purchased the book because I loved the designs and the majority of the patterns I would either make for myself or make as gifts. There are hip, mod and sometimes quirky patterns and very wearable and stylish. If you're big into designer clothing, these would appeal to you. Suss has a knack for picking great colors, stripe patterns and texture and incorporating them into her designs. Everything seems to be knit on big needles with either bulky yarn or double strands, so it's great for instant gratification (I can complete a sweater in under 2 weeks) or last-minute gifts.
Now, for the gripes and source of my frustration.
The mistakes are numerous in the patterns and the corrections are confusing. There were 4 pages of corrections I printed off the Suss website. Some of the corrections are redundant with the information already in the book- maybe I have a later edition?- but sometimes the corrections themselves were wrong or I couldn't figure out where they belonged in the pattern. I'm a fairly experienced knitter, so if I get stuck halfway through a pattern, I can usually work things out or adjust the pattern. Sometimes instructions are given just for the small size, so you have to stop and think and figure out what to do if you aren't making a small. So I find little things like this to be annoying and perhaps something that a beginner would not pick up on and have a tragic end result. I would really have liked this book more if time was spent on editing and correcting the patterns- it seems like it was rushed to publication with no time to check these things. I don't want to be stressed out when starting a pattern hoping that everything will turn out alright.
Another gripe I have would be the pictures. Yes, I find it interesting to know who she designed the piece for, and in which movie, but the incessant name dropping is annoying and pompous, while the photographs reflect this. The focus is not on the garments, but on the celebrity wearers of the garments. In some pictures, sweaters are downright blurry, while the focal point of the picture is a beautifully illuminated face of a highly-paid model or actor. Please. I am a knitter. I know I like the sweater when someone that beautiful is wearing it and posing artfully and unrealistically. I really like the Yarn Girl's Guide to Simple Knits because the sweaters and garments are all displayed on a mannequin. No distractions and you can figure out by looking at a garment if it would actually look good on you or if it would make you look like you're wearing a fat suit. We're not all waif-like Hollywood types, you know.
One last thing...Suss uses, in many patterns, her own brand of yarn in which you can order on her website. It can be a little daunting to find replacements if you don't want to use her yarn, but it can be done.
Overall, I have mixed feeling about this book. I would only recommend it if you are up for a challenge (even though the patterns themselves are all fairly easy) and don't mind comparing yourself to stick figure with perfect features.

When the TARDIS touches down in London, 2006, schoolteachers Ian and Barbara are eager to explore their own future. But they have arrived in the middle of a war, a war that has left London a ruin. Mistaken for vagrants, and with no way of proving otherwise, the Doctor's granddaughter and companions find themselves in the execution block on the Isle of Dogs. The Doctor has no choice but to help the military refine its ultimate weapon. The British Army has discovered time travel. And the consequences are already terrible.

Time Travel can be..........2007-06-30
a lot of things. Dangerous. Action packed. Confusing. Mostly confusing. The Doctor and gang find themselves in a London of their future (our past) rocked by war, death and ruin. England seems to have fought itself into a corner while trying to hold back progress and technology. This has only allowed its enemies to gain the upper hand.
The answer seems to be in the past (but once again a future the Doctor has yet to see) and the novel itself, while somewhat confusing and slow, is worth the read in the end. Doctor Who fans, who know their Doctor Who history, will enjoy it.
Rewriting history.......2006-02-09
For a while I thought this First Doctor adventure was a recycled reject from the lengthy Alternative Universe cycle recently concluded over in the Eighth Doctor books. Landing in a war-torn London in June 2006, the First Doctor and his original TV companions stumble across an audacious time-travel experiment that causes its test pilots to materialize in great numbers, each one a slightly different version of the original test pilot from a slightly different timeline (from what one would assume is another "quantum universe"). The Doctor grips his lapels a lot and murmurs about untold damage being done to the timelines. Ian meets an eerie alternate version of himself who does things Ian dares not do. Barbara learns that, in spite of what happened on TV in "The Aztecs" (when the Doctor told her "You can't rewrite history. Not one line!"), sometimes indeed history turns out wrong and does have to be changed.
What makes "The Time Travelers" fresh is the as-told-in-1963 approach. It goes beyond obvious to say that, in the reader's world, the London of 2006 has not been at war with a distant foreign power ever since a cataclysm that struck the city in 1966 and crippled humanity's growth. However, for the Ian and Barbara of 1963, whose lone vision of the future was the 28th Century of the TV adventure "The Sensorites", this apocalyptic 2006 is the inexorable future they must one day face.
The reader also learns early on that this future history is triggered by events that happened in the much later, post-Ian and Barbara, First Doctor TV adventure "The War Machines". What becomes obvious then is that the Doctor can in fact rewrite history. We know going in that this awful vision of 2006 is not going to be completely resolved at the end of the book -- the Doctor will have to wait for several companion changes to go by until he lands at the Post Office Tower in June 1966 in Episode 1 of "The War Machines". The ending to "The Time Travellers" is destined to be bittersweet rather than happy.
The first 200 pages are a bit dull, with several characters named after the author's friends fighting a desperate rearguard, both military and scientific, against the approaching foreign power. Things take a sharp left turn, however, when we learn who the titular "Time Travellers" are. A few big plot twists are revealed all at once. The action doesn't exactly get more interesting after page 200, but the character revelations, primarily about Susan, and Ian & Barbara, are worth the wait.
An odd book, then, one that on its surface is very similar to the EDAs of a few years' past, but which in the end proves to be much more imaginative than it may seem at first glance. You'll have to be familiar with a wide range of 1st Doctor TV stories (and catch a tangential reference to the 7th Doctor actioner "Remembrance of the Daleks") in order for all this to hang together in the way the author intended... but there's nothing wrong with any book that begs you to watch more 1st Doctor stories.
Superior........2006-02-03
One of the better Doctor Who books published in the last couple of years. Newcomer Guerrier writes a good if slightly slow tale of time travel paradoxes.

Book Description
Whether he's fighting fires, passing a kidney stone, hammering down I-80 in an 18-wheeler, or meditating on the relationship between cowboys and God, Michael Perry draws on his rural roots and footloose past to write from a perspective that merges the local with the global.
Ranging across subjects as diverse as lot lizards, Klan wizards, and small-town funerals, Perry's writing in this wise and witty collection of essays balances earthiness with poetry, kinetics with contemplation, and is regularly salted with his unique brand of humor.

Another Good Collection from Michael Perry.......2007-06-02
This collection of essays is a bit more eclectic than Population 485 but it showcases Perry's descriptive writing and thought-provoking observations well. Individual pieces were published between 1995 and 2004, and Perry has often updated the information through brief introductions or final notes. This approach reminds us that his stories are about real people whose lives go on even after the snapshot of a single essay or article. It is that intense personalization, along with his flair for unique description ("rawboned frame was swept by a list and sway, as if he were a cattail bumped by a breeze ") that leaves the reader ready for yet another collection of Michael Perry's work. The pieces are not arranged chronologically, but it is easy to see the development in the author's writing skills from some of the earliest pieces to the most recent--a good reference for any would-be essayist to study to see how even a good writer can improve his craft over time.
Impressive way with words.......2007-01-03
The thing that I loved about this book is the author's voice. He is highly observant, funny and he has a great way with words. His use of language is so real and fresh and different(in a really good way). He really knows how to put a spin on a story, and it just leaves you wanting more! The essays are entertaining snippets on different subjects: being on book tour, hanging out with some country music people, and other experiences in his life.
-It's a great read. I was reading this thinking that I'd love to have a conversation with this guy! I loved his writing.
American Life.......2005-07-26
Rebeccasreads highly recommends OFF MAIN STREET, Michael Perry's (of POPULATION 485 fame) second treasury of Americana: equal parts about the people he meets, the places he sees, the history he's known & the adventures he went on with truckers, Rolling Thunder, into a prison, about Greyhound buses, on country music Sara Evans' tour, a talk about Elvis, a meeting with the legendary music man, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, junk mail from the KKK, & much more.
Open OFF MAIN STREET & the stories pour forth about the weird & the hardworking, the killers & the singers, & just plain all-American -- from his Wisconsin home town, his book tour, his writing assignments, & his wanderings.
OFF MAIN STREET is a duffle bag of pungent tales, very well written, & a great gift for your homesick friends.
Love it.......2005-07-21
Love this book, as well as his other book Population 485. Fabulous writer and love the quirkyness of some of the stories.
Uncommon Slices of American Pie.......2005-06-21
Whether he's hobnobbing with country music's biggest stars, eavesdropping on a private conversation at a seedy Belizean motel, riding shotgun with a tell-it-like-it-is trucker, or delineating his own personal trials and tribulations, Michael Perry possesses the uncanny ability to transform everyday occurrences into uncommon slices of American pie. In Off Main Street, Perry waves his journalistic wand over rural America and metamorphoses the ordinary into the extraordinary. Portraying people who might very well be my neighbor or yours, Off Main Street beats with a small-town pulse that radiates with relatability.
My only gripe with this book is that Perry tries too hard to wield his literary chops and, in so doing, distance himself (readability-wise) from those very same common folk from which he draws his inspiration.

George Clooney: An Illustrated Story.......2000-06-27
If you are a George Clooney fan... George Clooney: An Illustrated Story is definitely the book for you! This contains many pictures of George, from the time he was just starting his career to the present with pictures from all of his movies. I was surprised to see photos of George that I had never seen before! You can read about George's early career, from his films and television pilots that flopped...to his successful and most well known character Dr. Douglas Ross on ER. This book is divided into chapters so you can easily find out specific George information. There are 9 chapters starting with "Child's Play." In this chapter you can learn all the basics about George and his family. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it!

Helpful, but walkthrough is lacking.......2000-06-17
This strategy guide contains a lot of useful information such as stats on all creatures, enemies, weapons, items, and bosses as well as how to beat or use each of them. This is helpful in getting through the game. However, the walkthrough was quite brief, especially for an RPG title. It primarily tells you where to go to complete the next quest. Maps of the various levels and location showing secrets and treasures to find as well as where the enemy is waiting in ambush would have been very useful to players of the game. When purchasing a strategy guide for a game, I usually look for a good walkthrough to help in areas where I get stuck. Despite the light walkthrough, I recommend this book for those who want to understand the game better and play more effectively. It does help fill in the gaps left by the game manual as far as the combat system and gives good descriptions of the different spells (disciplines) as well as how and when to use them. V:TM is a great game and this book will help you to enjoy it more.

Easy and thoughtful way to clear your debt and free your life.......2007-09-29
What I liked best about this book is that it's real. It doesn't sugar-coat the frustration and even embarrasment that you can feel when you find yourself 30,000 or more in debt. But it doesn't simply rub your hand and tell you to "manifest" prosperity either. Frankly, putting too much energy into the law of attraction is likely how we get ourselves into all this debt - trying to be like "everyone" else.
I digress.
The book puts out some straightforward steps for you to follow. Follow them and you'll eventually get out of debt. Not tomorrow. And without having to pay some userer for "debt consolidation counseling" either. But it's work.
I liken it to losing weight - you have to change you're whole mindset and make small, positive changes every day in order to acheive your goal. The same principles apply here. Make changes every day. Don't debt any more and follow the plan. No magic bullet - but haven't you realized they don't work anyway?
LIVING PROOF.......2007-09-01
Just 6 years ago (2001), I found myself under crushing student loan and credit card debt. You would be blown away by how much debt I'd amassed. I'd lost my job and the creditors were calling. My life quickly fell apart. I was depressed, anxious and mentally paralyzed, not knowing how to take back control. Creditors were calling every five minutes it seemed, yelling at me, threatening me. I was broke, and broken-hearted at where things were in my life. I even had to move back in with my parents which was humiliating. I read a lot of books on finances and two of them made all the difference in the world, "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt and Live Prosperously," and "Rich Dad Poor Dad." "Rich Dad" was about concepts and changing the paradigm of how I looked at money. "How to Get Out of Debt" was very, very specific with HOW to get out of debt and GET RICH SLOWLY. Reading "How to Get Out of Debt" was like my first day of sobriety. I had no idea that I even had this debting habit, as dumb as that may sound. I was reading the book, going "wow--that's me!" I applied the BACK TO BLACK principles, day by day, month by month, year by year. And now, 6 years later, I celebrate my first full year of ownership in my first home--which seemed an impossible dream just two years ago. I own my car outright. I have zero credit card debt. And my overall student loan debt has been reduced by at least 40%. I pay cash that I've saved for things that I need. I PAY MYSELF FIRST! (this is a key principle in both books). And believe it or not, I haven't had a credit card in about 10 years now--I use a Visa checkcard. Without a credit card I've traveled to Europe, Mexico and Central America, rented cars, and paid for emergencies. And I don't live impoverished. I just live within my means, and pay cash with money saved. It's a complete myth that you need a credit card to survive. This book helped me to understand that. It was also very specific as to what happens if a creditor takes you to court or ruins your credit, which are probably the two biggest threats they have over you. Knowledge made all those things less scary. Ultimately, I would say this book is about how to replace unhealthy money habits with healthier ones. If this book cost $1,000, it would still be worth it. At $10, it's a blessing.
Please read, it will teach you how to help yourself.......2007-07-17
If you are like me and you are trying to pay your bils and debts in a responsible and timely manner..this book is for you. I have read some of the other " financial authors" out there and I always felt lost and that there advice was just out of my needs..this book was right on. After I followed the spending plan record ( Wow, do you honestly want to know what you are spending, this will open your eyes) and wrote all my debts down in black and white, I feel that I can tackle all my money issues in a clear and concise manner.
After following this plan, I am now ready to move on to retirement planning, college savings, etc. If you are trying to get through today so you can get to tomorrow, this financial guide is for you.
Get Out of the Red and Into the Black.......2007-07-03
Plain and simple, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously is one of the best contributions to the personal finance realm. Why do I say that? Because, in no uncertain terms, it addresses circumstances that most people in our society find themselves - deep in debt, digging deeper, and dealing, in silent desperation, with the repercussions.
In an era where consumers often finance their lifestyles with credit cards, use their homes like ATM machines, and, ultimately, make consumer credit counseling a booming business, Jerrold Mundis explains how our emotions and habitual thinking have put, and kept, many of us on the path to financial ruin.
The genius of this book, however, is its backbone: the principles of Debtors Anonymous. Though we may hate to think of it, habits of a lifetime do take work to change, ignoring does Madison Avenue take emotional strength, and dealing with the issues debt often engenders can be really tough. But, this book offers hope, and support, to those who heed its message.
Bottom line: no matter where how deep in debt you are, there is a way out if you keep your head and keep moving forward. And, Mundis can help you do it, if you follow his three cardinal rules: 1) don't debt one day at a time, 2) Keep a spending record scrupulously, and 3) adhere closely to your spending plan.
All in all, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & live Prosperously can be one of the best additions to your financial library, whether you are in drowning in debt or not.
Only for people in serious debt with no knowledge of finances.......2007-06-21
For my situation, this book was too rudimentary. I was looking for something that would give me startegies on how to payoff debt quicker. This book is not really about ways to payoff debt. It is more about learning how to spend less and seemed to be more of an advertisement for Debtors Anonymous. Things like "Try to go one day without using your credit card"... not for me. If you're in really bad shape and spend and spend without any way to stop then seek professional help, don't rely on this book. If you're like me and just looking for ways to reduce your outstanding debt quicker, look elsewhere, this is not the book for you.
