Artist's Photo Reference:Flowers.......2007-08-07
This book is excellent for anyone painting flowers as the pictures are brilliant for reference.
More flowers, please.......2006-11-10
I liked the book. It has lots of useful photos, and the author, being an artist himself, designed the book with the artist in mind, which I found wonderful. The only reason I did not give it a "perfect" score, is because I think there are some very common flowers "missing", such as hollyhocks, violets and a few others. But considering that there are hundreds of flowers, it is understandable that these flowers are not there.
Great tool as a design reference.......2000-06-24
At first glance, I was disappointed. I expected the photos to be somewhat more artistic. However, after sitting down and read it, the photos are very detailed, and that's why I wanted to order this book in the first place. It contains several photos in a page that shows the different views of a flower: close up of pedals, open & close etc - which I find very useful as a design reference. However, I must say I am not very impressed with the demonstration of the teaching, how to paint or photograph a flower. I think if the author is going to enclose this part in his book, it should be in detail, or else better off just leave it.
Great book, A must-have reference for any flower artist.......2000-05-02
If you love to draw or paint flowers you will love this book. It's really nice reference book for those who don't have a garden with dozens of flowers year round to go pick or photograph when they want to create their next masterpiece.
The book contains over 500 clear quality photos. There are about 50 different flowers in all. Each is show in several different perspectives from up close petals, to stems, in large bunches and even inside the flowers.
As a bonus there are five beautiful step-by-step demonstrations on how to draw the flowers as well. The examples include Chrysanthemums in acrylic, Dahlias in pastel, Sunflowers & Orchids in colored pencil & Pansies in watercolor.
Beautifully detailed photos of flowers, leaves & buds.......1999-03-09
Gary Green has created a dream book for artists who specialize in flowers. Using many different angles and showing all stages of growth, he has compiled a fabulous reference for those of us who are unable to keep flowers on hand. My only question is, "When will he come out with his next book?"
Book Description
The time when "fashion" was defined by French designers whose clothes could be afforded only by elite has ended. Now designers take their cues from mainstream consumers and creativity is channeled more into mass-marketing clothes than into designing them. Indeed, one need look no further than the Gap to see proof of this. In The End of Fashion, Wall Street Journal, reporter Teri Agins astutely explores this seminal change, laying bare all aspects of the fashion industry from manufacturing, retailing, anmd licensing to image making and financing. Here as well are fascinating insider vignettes that show Donna Karan fighting with financiers, the rivalry between Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, and the commitment to haute conture that sent Isaac Mizrahi's business spiraling.
Customer Reviews:
Dated, but not bad.......2007-09-13
I had high expectations that the book failed to meet. The beginning chapter is great, explaining the "end of fashion" - clearly organized and interesting. However, much of the rest of the book was a poorly organized slow read. It starts with some history of the "old" French labels, then it goes all over the place, in chapters devoted to individual designers or pairs of designers. There is little rhyme or reason in those chapters, and everything seems to happen from the late 1960's until the late 90's, so much of it is contemporaneous and it is hard to see what point the author is making about the evolution of fashion. The worst part of the book, however, is that it is dated - it talks of labels that nobody cares about, or about movie stars and events that were relevant in the 80's up to mid 90's - the early Clinton days are as hip as it gets.
Overall, if you are interested either in the design aspects of fashion, or the business side, you are better off trying to find better reading somewhere else.
Fantastic.......2007-07-21
Very interesting, business minded look at the fashion industry and the struggle between the creative and the profitable. Written in a straight forward, non-fluffy manner.
key resource.......2007-05-31
Wonderful book. This book has given me loads of useful information about the fashion industry. I use information from it in nearly every job interview I've been to.
terrific fashion primer for students and anyone wanting to know how fashion really works.......2006-11-13
Fashion books fall into a few categories: designer biographies, coffee table books and encyclopedic guides. The End of Fashion is a stunning exception--a hybrid that shows just how the business of fashion works and fails. I bought this book after seeing Teri as a guest judge on Project Runway, and after hearing Tim Gunn's podcast about how important a journalist she is. He didn't exaggerate. This book breaks through the hype and for once I was able to fully understand, to connect the dots about how the fashion business really works. This book came out a few years ago, but the case studies are so thorough that it seems even more current and relevant than most of the drivel about fashion we always read about. Check it out.
Great Insight to the current "business" of fashion.......2006-11-05
Terrific book with great insights into how the fashion world has changed. Although not super current, this book truly reveals what has happened in the world of fashion and retail. Terri presents the subject clearly and interestingly and the topics and designers she has chosen clearly illustrate how fashion has become big business.

Book Description
It¿s not feelings of superiority that make us suspect the universe is filled with dumb people: The universe really is filled with dumb people, as it¿s easy to see in the pages of Leland Gregory¿s sharp new offering, Hey Idiot!Gregory, a former Saturday Night Live writer, is the smart cookie who¿s previously showed us gray matter¿challenged examples in everything from the criminal world to the hallowed halls of government. This time, though, everyone, everywhere is fair game if they¿ve exhibited outrageously stupid behavior.Consider: The forgetful fireman who left cooking oil on the stove and returned from a call to find the station house burned to the ground.A lung cancer patient who caused an explosion when he lit up a cigarette¿in his oxygen tent.A 58-year-old billiards player who was suspended from competition after testing positive for a muscle-building hormone.F. Edward Hebert, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, who said, ¿The only way we¿ll get a volunteer army is to draft them.¿Hey Idiot! lets everyone from bosses to public officials, doctors to sports heroes, skewer themselves with their moronic words and action. Readers¿and there are loads of them who can¿t turn away from ¿America¿s funniest and dumbest¿ TV shows¿will howl with laughter at the more than 200 examples of boneheadedness and buffoonery. Potential readers are also guaranteed to hear about Hey Idiot! since the only thing Gregory does better than tracking nitwits and nincompoops is to appear on high-profile programs such as the Today show, Inside Edition, and on MSNBC to plug his highly readable books. Wise up and don¿t miss Hey Idiot! Stupid sells.

Stupidity is not illegal.......2007-02-27
This book would make a great stocking stuffer for your pal Bubba, who hasn't read a book since he got out of Middle School. The reason he didn't go to High School was he never came across anyone who he thought it did any good. Almost anyone will get a chuckle out of these little stories;although our pal Bubba may have trouble "getting" some of them;and there will be others that will have him asking;"What's funny about that?"
Most of the stories are short enough to be read in 30 seconds, unless the simplest idea leaves one with the sense of stupefaction.
Here's one that gives you a flavor of the book. Try this one on Bubba and you'll get my point.
"F.Edward Hebert of the House Armed Services Committee, who said,"The only way we'll get a volunteer army is to draft them."
Wait for Bubba's studious comment;
"Who is F.Edward Hebert?"
or,
"Well isn't it?
or,
"Who organized that committee;it must'a been set up by our dumb Mayor Zeke, and he's probably got his friends and relatives on it?"
or,
"I agree;who's gonna volunteer for the army, they gotta pay them;any dummy can tell ya that!"
Or maybe he'll just look at you in complere bafflement and say;
"I don't get it!"
Another reviewer gave Einstein's of infinity.Here are a couple of thoughts on Stupidity;
"If you're Ignorant,you can always learn;but if you're Stupid,its
permanent."
"Stupidity has a certain charm.Ignorance does not."
"Stupidity often saves a man from going mad."
"When a man does does a thoroughly stupid thing,it is always from the
noblest motives."
Not everybody gave this little tome a high rating;nor do I suppose Bubba would!
Hey, Idiot is funny and light reading!.......2006-05-24
I found this book both funny and light reading. It was perfect for the time when you don't want to get into a novel or don't have the time. Some of the people do the darndest things. Makes you wonder how the human race ever got this far. I recommend it as long as you don't take humanity too seriously.
dumb de dumb dumb.......2004-02-12
I believe it was Einstein who said that only two things were infinite, the universe and human stupidity. Enterprising writers have turned the latter into a cottage industry, News of the Weird and The Darwin Awards being two of the more well-known examples. This book is a worthy contender, with nearly 250 pages of prime Grade-A idiocy. While I've docked it one star for lack of documentation (I suspect a few fictional and/or urban legend stories may have snuck in), those merely looking for a good laugh at the expense of other members of our highly-evolved(?) species will get their money's worth. Categorized into 12 chapters, each of which could probably have been a book in itself.
Not great,but not awful.......2003-11-28
I wasn't thrilled by this book, but by the same token, I wasn't impelled to get my money back. It's...well, okay, I guess. Much of the info here, as was noted, isn't verified, and I have a feeling that a lot is bogus. I was hoping for something more along the lines of the Darwin Awards. That said, one does get some laughs here.
Hey, Idiot! Review.......2003-11-25
While the book does have a lot of off the wall events written down, it is absolutely worthless as a piece of research. A few Urban Legends are presented here as real stories. There are almost no newspapers cited, no dates, no years. Given that it then lacks any sense of having been really researched, I'm left with no reason to believe anything in the book, no matter how clever the author can write.

Customer Reviews:
A Most Interesting Read for Movie Lovers.......2006-11-02
This is a hard to put down book! I only learned about it because my husband and I just had a book published unknowingly with the same headline title. Having worked at Warner Bros mainly through the 60s, I found all this background on the brothers extremely interesting and very well written. In fact, I couldn't put it down! I do believe the title of another chapter in their book would have made a better title for their book though: BUILDING THE DREAM, because that is what it really is all about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in movies since their inception. I have read many books on the subject, and besides our newly published book - which is quite different from this one - this is the most enjoyable and informative one of all. Shirley Lawrence
More Than a "Rags to Riches" Story of Hollywood's Beginnings.......2003-04-03
I read "Hollywood Be Thy Name" with great interest and curiosity. Author, Ms. Cass Warner Sperling has kept her unspoken "promise" made to Grandpa Harry (patriarch of the Warner brothers) at his deathbed when she was a ten year old girl, to convey to others his deep beliefs and ideals.
I rate it 5 stars because the story and writing style paints an incredible picture of not just another "rags to riches" story but one of tragedy and great sacrifice leading to an enduring legend of the motion picture industry directly because of the "can do and make it go right" attitudes of the Warners.
From the family gold watch (later to be hocked in order to secure payment for the brothers first projector) placed in 1883 into the secret pocket of Benjamin Warner for his immigration to America into New York and the arrival of wife Pearl and children less than a year later, to a realization of a movie empire that had as its motto "Educate, entertain, and enlighten" which is a Hollywood legacy.
A must read for movie buffs and those interested in the beginnings of Hollywood. This is a book that has "all the right stuff" for the making of a fascinating mini-series as told by granddaughter Cass and others.
Shelley Abate, movie buff and avid reader.

Passion and Persistence: Ingredients for Success.......2003-03-19
Not simply a biography, Hollywood Be Thy Name is a moving and motivational series of lessons in persistence in the face of great challenges.
The reader is left with no doubt that while the Warner Brothers, Harry, Jack, Albert and Sam, made astute business decisions in building their company from its austere begginings in 1907, to the empire that became known as Warner Brothers Studios, the growth and succcess was fueled by an unmistakeable passion for moviemaking.
The book is well written by Cass Warner Sperling, grandaughter of Harry Warner and Cork Milner.
Hollywood by Thy Name also serves as a moving documentary-a history of early Hollywood. (Thirty two page photo insert).
Students of Hollywood history will find the book illuminating. Movie buffs will find it entertaining and those interested in the business side of this business we call "show business" will find it educational.
Interviews with Jack Warner Jr. and Ronald Reagan are highlighted but the real stars of "Hollywood Be Thy Name" are the brothers themselves, truly the earliest of the rags to riches stories and whose legend lives on through this book.
Too many inaccuracies.......2000-02-25
If the authors of this book spent so much time researching (11 years according to the Kirkus Review above) then one wonders why their historical contextualization is as sloppy and superficial as it is. Let me cite one egregious example. On page 274, the authors explain that Elia Kazan's naming names fed Joe McCarthy's ambition which resulted in the blacklisting of the Hollywood 10. In fact, McCarthy had absolutely nothing to do with the Hollywood 10 (who were blacklisted in 1947--McCarthy didn't rise to fame until 1950), and Elia Kazan wasn't brought before HUAC until years later. Any high school history textbook will be clear about this. Also, the melodramatic quality of this book, especially in its fictionalized dialogues, leads the reader to question whether the authors had any intention of writing a factual book, or whether they wanted to invent a history that was dramatic and would sell a lot of copies.

10 plus day MBA.......2007-05-13
I bought this book because I am changing jobs. I will be transitioning from the public sector to the private sector.
This book provides an overview of the essentials of being an MBA. Definitions are abundant along with many concepts. The author assumes quite a bit about this reader in that 10 days is a generality regarding absorption of this material. Of course I knew nothing about what an MBA does so this book did fill in a lot of holes in that regard. I am about through the material and plan on a second reading at the least. For readers with a business background or planning on getting an MBA, most will find this book very informative.
10 Day MBA.......2007-05-07
I ran into this book once on a trip through London and I found it a great review of my MBA from a few years ago. I have sine purchased it again as a gift for friends and family.
Troubleshooting Guide for MBA's.......2007-04-03
The Ten Day MBA is a very sharp synopsis of the tools and concepts a person will be exposed to when studying in a business school. It cuts right into the core of each topic with down to earth language and practical applications. The author makes clear what concepts are applicable and which are good to know. The intention of the author is to give a frame of reference for MBA students; it should not be considered as an in depth source for specific themes like Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Operations, Organization Behavior or Economics. This book is ideal for those who want to go to a business school and need to know the real deal instead of the filtered information in brochures and web sites. There is no hiding the hard facts that an MBA will encounter in the workplace, and the strategies shown to use effectively the tools are as valuable as the tools themselves.
The application of all the tools described in the Ten Day MBA is unlikely at any level; most people develop few of the aspects taught in business schools in their area of interest and expertise. The further research and development of topic of interest should be in the hands of the interested parties. The book then could be considered more as a trouble shooting guide for MBA's.
