Flower Paintings.......2000-05-02
This book is a collection of flower paintings by different artists. It is beautiful to look it. The artists describe the technique they used, their materials, and the process of the painting. I find it enjoyable and liked the idea that it had many mediums. A nice gift.

Historical Fashion in Detail: The 17th and 18th Centuries

Madeleine Vionnet's greatest distinction as a designer was her discovery of the bias cut. Cutting patterns along the bias forces the fabric to cling to the body and move with it, which created her trademark look of draped, form-conscious clothing. When designer Issey Miyake first saw a Vionnet dress, it was like the first time he saw Winged Victory at the Louvre: "I thought then that the statue of Nike had been reincarnated in the dresses by Vionnet. She had captured the most beautiful aspect of classical Greek aesthetics: the body and movement." Vionnet's long career as a dressmaker and designer began with the 20th century. Always conscious of women's bodies and inspired in part by modern dancer Isadora Duncan, she soon dispensed with corsets and other constricting garments, and used barefoot models to present her first solo collection. Though simple, her dresses were never plain; the use of a Cartier necklace as a halter strap is a classic Vionnet innovation. This inimitable combination of comfort and glamour made Vionnet's clothes a favorite among European nobility, Hollywood royalty--notably Marlene Dietrich, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Katharine Hepburn--as well as socialites and other trendsetters. Close to a century after its introduction, the bias cut remains an important element in clothing design.
Madeleine Vionnet is a tall book that echoes many of the designs inside. It is filled with contemporary photographs of the clothing, period pictures shot by Man Ray and Steichen, design sketches, and, perhaps most interestingly, patterns for the clothes. The accompanying text traces Vionnet's evolution from an 11-year-old seamstress, through her days apprenticing at the famed Callot Soeurs couture house in Paris, and on into the design empire that secured her an enduring spot in fashion history.
Book Description
Back in print at last, with a ravishing new cover, Madeleine Vionnet is "not only the best book on Vionnet, but perhaps the best book ever on a fashion designer" (Out). Madeleine Vionnet (1876–1975) was the greatest dressmaker in the world. Considered a genius for her innovations with the bias cutthe most difficult and desirable cut in clothing designshe has a fanatical following. Vionnet was a maverick, her results spectacular. She dressed the stars of the '30s, invented new pattern-making techniques, and eschewed corsets for her models. Vionnet's dresses are virtually un-copiable and highly coveted by vintage clothing collectors. Madeleine Vionnet is the definitive study of this venerated artist. Illustrated with more than 400 photographs, line drawings, and watercolors, it also includes 38 original patterns for Vionnet dresses. As the Art Deco Society of L.A.'s newsletter has said, anyone "interested in Art Deco or fashion must have this book."

Madeleine Vionnet.......2007-08-19
This book is an absolute dream right through from the beautiful hard cover to the wonderful photographs, history and patterns. I am a Designer/Patternmaker and is the most beautiful book I have ever bought on fashion. Betty Kirke has put a lot of love and care into this treasure and any student of fashion, especially patternmaking and draping has to purchase this and learn a whole lot about bias cutting.
An excellent reference book.......2007-05-21
Madeleine Vionnet
A fascinating book on Madeleine Vionnet. Betty Kirke has plunged into the personal story, the career, but mostly the clothes, this avant garde fashion designer has made in the 20's and 30's. All young fashion designers should be grateful to Betty Kirke, the talented author of this book, who has given them the chance to study the patterns, the style, the technique of Madeleleine Vionnet.
Absolutely gorgeous!.......2007-04-13
Well worth the price. Saw this in a store and was mesmerized.Where Poiret is fun....this gal was ALL class.
draped fashions.......2007-03-16
I wanted to learn how to do this style of gowns for my fashion dolls. I saw this book on ebay go for $600 so figured it should be a good one. It has plenty of info and even the patterns for the gowns.
Awesome Reference.......2007-03-12
What a great book, excellent quality paper, production, layout, content--how wonderful that the author shared the patterns, this is a must have for any budding fashion designer.

Book Description
Canadian Patrick Fillion is one of the rising stars of the gay comic world. In these comics he lures his readers into a gay universe, going where no man has gone before. In stories one or several pages long, he sends his superheroes out to take the field against the forces of evil. Fillion's sexy heroes all have their hands full when they come up against these perverse and powerful bad guys. Their mightiest weapon, a huge cock, is always loaded. You can look forward to lots of exciting uncensored sex adventures full of unbelievable excesses!

Titillation Interruptus.......2007-06-13
Can't say I was pleased. this is only porn in superhero drag, with stories continuously incomplete. Moreover, IMHO the gargantuan sex part depiction had a sense in Tom Of Finland's drawings, here's just bombastic and annoying.
Finally! A comic without subtext!.......2007-03-08
Well, the stories aren't deep, but if you want a "story", this isn't your book. As far as hot naked cartoon men with super powers and equally hot super villains go, this compelation is tops -- and bottoms! ;-}
A good teaser of Patrick Fillion's artwork.......2006-05-30
This a a good sampling of Patrick Fillion's artwork from his different comic book series. For some reason Amazon.com does not carry the actual different comic series that are published by Class Comics Inc. If you are looking for more solid story lines (Sex is still the predominant theme)you might try these. Some of my favorites are: Camili-Cat, Guardians of the Cube, Deimos and Naked Justice. Amazon.com does not seem to carry any of these at the moment.
All of these comics are explicit and for adults only. If you can deal with the sexual nature of the content the artwork is fantastic and the storylines entertaining.
Patrick, in my humble opinion, is the best gay comic artist out there. I gave this one a 4/5 simply because I prefer the heroes/anti-heroes to stay within their own storyline and not to be jumbled together in one publication. The artwork still gets a 5/5 however.
Excellent Transaction.......2006-02-23

Fresh from the popular newspaper column by CECIL ADAMS!
WHAT IS CECIL ADAMS'S IQ?

Now, in his fifth book, he takes yet another stab, dissecting such classic
conundrums as

--What's the difference between a Looney Tune and a Merrie Melody?
--Can you see a Munchkin committing suicide in The Wizard of Oz?
--Was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre based on actual events?

And much more!
THE CRITICS: STILL RAVING AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!
"Trenchant, witty answers to the great imponderables."
--Denver Post

Cecil does it again.......2002-06-24
Another book for Cecil Adams in his quest to fight ignorance...
After almost 30 years this eccentric guy has been trying to get rid of the ignorance and myths upon us and shine a light of wisdom among us...
Worth a read...
The best thing to come out of Chicago (after my Wife).......2001-06-19
My Mother used to say that "no one likes a smartass" - Sorry Mom but I dont agree; not when the smartass in question is Cecil Adams. Here is a man who clearly loves to confound us with his wide and deep knowledge and has an engaging way of keeping the "teaming millions"on their toes. I secretly suspect that he gets a little help in his research but hey, who am I to quibble. This is great light reading - informative and interesting and the best thing to come out of Chicago (since my Wife)
I bought this book ( and some of the others in the series) for my daughter but read them first and enjoyed them so much that I kept them for myself. Dont worry , I'll let her borrow them from time to time So try this book - you won't regret it
Well Cecil, you did it again..........2000-11-10
Hmmmmmm- as an avid fan of SD I was happy to learn that Cece has produced his 2nd best work ever (sorry about that I'm a fan of the 1st SD). The topics are still interesting, the wit- dry and razor sharp- but- it could have been better without the Straigh Dope message board fillers (such a waste of good space for such drivel).
Nonetheless- this book will surely be a great tool in killing time (with a few yuks pitched in).
Entertaining!!!!.......1999-07-15
Another great book by the witty, all-knowing (well, most of the time) Cecil Adams. The book's question and answer format makes it easy to read and understand. A must!
ITs not the best, but still pretty good.......1999-04-20
The entire straight dope series is a hilarious and thought provoking group of books. I highly recommend all of them. The one problem I have with the more recent ones, however, is the inclusion of cyberchats involving the "teeming millions." They kind of take away from what we want to read( Cecil) and instead gives us egotistical neurotics who want to spout off a snide remark about some topic with not nearly the wit nor the intelligence of Mr. Adams.
Kudos to Cece for another great accomplishment in ridding the world of ignorance (a little at a time). Lets ditch the AOL chats though.

Something odd, if predictable, became of screenwriter William Goldman after he wrote the touchstone tell-all book on filmmaking, Adventures in the Screen Trade (1983), he became a Hollywood leper. Goldman opens his long-awaited sequel by writing about his years of exile before he found himself--again--as a valuable writer in Hollywood.
Fans of the two-time Oscar-winning writer (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men) have anxiously waited for this follow-up since his career serpentined into a variety of big hits and critical bombs in the '80s and '90s. Here Goldman scoops on The Princess Bride (his own favorite), Misery, Maverick, Absolute Power, and others. Goldman's conversational style makes him easy to read for the film novice but meaty enough for the detail-oriented pro. His tendency to ramble into other subjects may be maddening (he suddenly switches from being on set with Eastwood to anecdotes about Newman and Garbo), but we can excuse him because of one fact alone: he is so darn entertaining.
Like most sequels, Which Lie follows the structure of the original. Both Goldman books have three parts: stories about his movies, a deconstruction of Hollywood (here the focus is on great movie scenes), and a workshop for screenwriters. (The paperback version of the first book also comes with his full-length screenplay of Butch; his collected works are also worth checking out). This final segment is another gift--a toolbox--for the aspiring screenwriter. Goldman takes newspaper clippings and other ideas and asks the reader to diagnose their cinematic possibilities. Goldman also gives us a new screenplay he's written (The Big A), which is analyzed--with brutal honesty--by other top writers. With its juicy facts and valuable sidebars on what makes good screenwriting, this is another entertaining must-read from the man who coined what has to be the most-quoted adage about movie-business success: "Nobody knows anything." --Doug Thomas
Book Description
From the Oscar-winning screenwriter of
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and
The Princess Bride (he also wrote the novel), and the bestselling author of
Adventures in the Screen Trade comes a garrulous new book that is as much a screenwriting how-to (and how-not-to) manual as it is a feast of insider information.
If you want to know why a no-name like Kathy Bates was cast in
Misery-it's in here. Or why Linda Hunt's brilliant work in
Maverick didn't make the final cut-William Goldman gives you the straight truth. Why Clint Eastwood loves working with Gene Hackman and how MTV has changed movies for the worse-William Goldman, one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood today, tells all he knows. Devastatingly eye-opening and endlessly entertaining,
Which Lie Did I Tell? is indispensable reading for anyone even slightly intrigued by the process of how a movie gets made.
Customer Reviews:
Which Lie Did I Tell?.......2007-03-29
The best of it's kind for anyone interested in screen writing. Easy to read, full of help, Excellent.
The Trials and Tribulations of a Hollywood Screenwriter. And Some Advice. .......2006-07-31
"Which Lie Did I Tell?" is a follow-up to William Goldman's 1983 book "Adventures in the Screen Trade" in which the screenwriter gives us the inside scoop on Hollywood moviemaking from a unique point of view -that of the writer- and provides some lessons in screenwriting through examples from his own and others' attempts to create movies from the raw materials of experience and imagination. This book has 4 parts, but if you're only interested in the stories Goldman has to tell about his Hollywood experiences, those are found in Part 1. Parts 2-4 address the craft of screenwriting: what works, what doesn't, why, and how to pitch it. Goldman is opinionated, blunt, and he refers to his Oscar-winning "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" screenplay far too often. It's obviously his pride and joy. "Which Lie Did I Tell?" is briskly paced, personal, and it gives us the lowdown on what it takes -not just the writing talent, but the mettle- to write movies in Hollywood.
Goldman starts with the 9 years he didn't work, 1978-1986, after having written 7 movies in the prior 8 years. Not exactly encouraging to aspiring screenwriters. Then Goldman takes us through his experiences writing -and in some cases filming- seven screenplays he wrote 1986-1997: "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "The Princess Bride", "Misery", "The Year of the Comet", "Maverick", "The Ghost and the Darkness", and "Absolute Power". These screenplays provide insight into a variety of writing challenges, as some are original, some adapted, one adapted from Goldman's own book, some from novels, some entirely fictional, and one is based on a true story. And, of course, some were hits, some flops, and one didn't make it. Goldman relates the ideas behind these movies, his intentions and struggles in writing them, with plenty of commentary on studio executives, stars, directors, and test audiences. Goldman's goal is to tell it like it is in the screen trade.
In Part 2, Goldman examines the screenplays for some famous -and famously successful- movie scenes from "There's Something About Mary", "When Harry Met Sally", "North by Northwest", "The Seventh Seal", "Chinatown", "Fargo", and his own "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". He presents analysis and opinion on why these scenes work so well and shares his technique for finding the heart of the material when adapting work for the screen. In Part 3, Goldman looks at some real-life dramas that might make interesting movies, but notes the difficulties in adapting them and discusses the problems inherent in writing about real people. Part 4 is a screenplay that Goldman wrote in order that others might criticize it for this book, followed by critiques from 6 successful screenwriters. This is a worthwhile exercise that really illuminates the pitfalls of creating characters for the screen.
Which Lie....?.......2006-06-25
a hilarious account of the 'politics of hollywood' from the perspective of a brilliant writer...
Another Great Read from Goldman.......2004-11-08
I loved Goldman's Adventures in the Screen Trade and loved this book almost as much. It's interesting, funny and revealing, written in a casual and frank manner that you'd expect from a good friend. Goldman writes books and screenplays in multiple genres because he focuses on whether each story is one he wants to tell - not whether it's the same type of story he succeeded with before. What amazes me about this versatile writer is his generosity. In this book he discusses his creative processes and offers detailed, useful guidance to aspiring writers (for comparison, Joe Ezterhaus did not do this in his interesting memoir). At the end of the book, Goldman even has the guts to offer up a new script draft for criticism by top screenwriters whose comments he includes. Who else would dare to expose his work-in-process like that? Not I! He is my hero.
The Land of Dreams.......2004-08-28
After the Adventures in the Screen Trade many years ago, I had to sink my eyes in this second adventure. I must admit to being a Goldman fan. It was a hard volume to put down. I went from cover to cover in a couple of days. Back again a few more times. I laughed so many times I felt dizzy. Kinda got a buzz! Good reads are supposed to do that to you! Goldman's read is cool! It's heavy with experience! He's crossed a lot of bridges, built some, and burned some too! This one is a Do Not Miss read too. As usual, no butt kissing here! He tells it like it is, not how it should be! An E-ride ticket to how things are in Dreamland. Hey, Goldman! We're waiting for the next Adventure!

Great ending to the Dwarven Trilogy.......2007-06-21
This is a very good trilogy if you are interested in dwarves, and their beginings. It filled in some holes, and helps you understand why dwarves act the way they do.
It portrays Dwarves as grumpy, and I agree. I saw one at Wal-mart and asked him about Thorbardin. He replyed with something better left unsaid. Very grumpy indeed.
Although the 1st book is the best in the series, the third ties it all together nicely.
Entertaining Tale of Leadership and War in the Dwarven Nations!.......2007-06-12
By far one of my favorite trilogies in all the Dragonlance Saga, The Swordsheath Scroll does an excellent job of wrapping up the Dwarven Nations Trilogy. The development and growth of the main character, the battle scenes, and the overall description of the Dwarven world are but a few aspects that make this book a great one. This book also sheds a little light on some of the initial interactions between the Dwarven and Elven races. Very entertaining.
Perfect Dwarven Description.......2000-03-22
As the title says, this book perfectly describes the dwarven demeanor. Derkin is the epitome of the lifestyles of a vindictive dwarf, and of a leader...I highly suggest that you read this book , as well as the previous 2 books to this series.
What an end!.......1998-01-18
T.s.s. is the last book of three in the "Dwarfen nation triology". The saga begins right after the "magewar" in the second book, where the dwarfes of Thorbadin fought some evil magicians. The headperson is the slave Derkin Hammerhand, who, with help from some very
special persons, is to become the leader of "The chosen ones"; dwarfs were slaves just like him, but as he frees.
The human invation of both the dwarfen realm, known as Kal-Thax, and the elf-realm in the east, must be prevented, and together with the elfs, Derkin and his dwarfs fights the humans in several battles.
The book is filled with action, tension and, of course, alot of fantasy-related happenings, written in a very captivating way of style.
I tried to come up with some negative thoughts about this book, but I really couldn`t.
I really advise YOU to read this book, or, as a matter of fact, the whole triology.
Book Description
Dividend Capture is a step-by-step guide for increasing your wealth using a tried-and-true method for significantly increasing income from dividends-no matter what the market is doing.
Customer Reviews:
AVOID THIS BOOK !.......2006-05-13
Its being reletlessly "spammed" all over stock webstites by someone with a financial interest.
I wouldnt take the book if they sent it to me free.
Terrible ethics.
A really informative book!.......2006-04-04
This is a very creative system for making money by trading stocks that pay large dividends. It is based on balance. As the author says, on some trades you will make money, and on some trades you will lose money. But all the while the dividends just keep rolling in. All you have to do is identify buying chances which the author tells you how to do. The rest is a matter of following the system. I have captured several dividends so far, and I also made some capital gains. The book provides benchmarks for valuing dividend paying stocks and overall market strategies which are also interesting. Some of the other stock books I have read were about how the author made money. This one is about how I can make money. I think anyone who buys this book will enjoy reading it and will make money from it.
All fluff and no substance.......2006-04-04
Absolute basics, and wrongheaded at that. Ignores the impact of extraneous events that can hammer a stock during the short holding period associated with dividend capture, and which can turn incremental gains into disastrous losses. And if you are going to use technical analysis, which involves substantial risk, why not go for 20%, 40% or 100% gains?
I will also note that someone frequently spams the Yahoo message boards promoting this book. Just an observation.
bear9
I've make a lot of money.......2006-03-24
I bought this book last November. It took me about a week to really get the system set up and working. I have captured 53 dividends since I started. Not too many at first but more every month. I'm retired and have plenty of time to devote to capturing dividends, but if you have a desk job and a nice boss, you could do this at work. The book tells you everything you need to know to do this system and there are examples. Some parts are confusing at first, but if you reread them and think about it, you will understand. I can't believe that I am making all this money. It is the most fun I've had in a long time.
Save your money........2006-03-19
If this book would have had some substance, it may have been worth reading. The author may very well know about capturing dividends, unfortunately she is not letting her readers know much about the subject. The title is kind of ironic. Don't waste your money on this book.
