3 out of 5 stars The shoes are all wrong!.......2003-12-07

Don't get me wrong--I'm a huge fan of Tierney's paper dolls and own more sets of them than I can count. I very eagerly waited for the Irish Dancer set to be published, as I was Irish dancing myself at the time, but unfortunately I was a little disappointed. Tierney's dolls are usually so carefully researched, but in these, he seems to have no understanding of what Irish dancing shoes look like. The hard shoes look like none I have ever seen before--they appear to be a slip-on type with no toe tap, laces, or ankle strap at all. The ghillies look more realistic, but there's not a poodle sock in sight.

The dresses, however, are quite lovely, drawing from both traditional school & competition-style dresses as well as "Riverdance" and other similar shows.

3 out of 5 stars Nice for girl entering Irish dance........2002-08-25

This paper doll book includes 1 doll and 8 costumes. They are non-perforated cut-outs. The doll is large, nearly 12", which surprised me, because most Tierney paper dolls are drawn to a smaller scale. The costumes are pretty but no history of them is given.

4 out of 5 stars A Book Every Woman Should Read.......2005-09-30

I really enjoyed this book. It contains many quotes from fashion icons as well as helpful hits. You will be able to learn what is appropriate to wear and when it is appropriate to wear it. I read through the whole book and loved every page. Every woman should read this book and they will always be in style.

4 out of 5 stars great way to put your priorities in place.......2005-09-04

This book is full of many things we instinctively know... but it helps to hear them spelled out in plain English.

So if you have a tendancy to splurge on purple bell bottoms on sale and green fluo platform sandals (that spend 3 years in the back of your closet never worn until you chuck them), this book is for you.

I find it a good reference every now and then, to help keep my fashion priorities in place. And when I encounter a fashion victim hottie, it helps me to keep perspective and not go out and buy those pink suede cowboy boots.

3 out of 5 stars cofee table fashion.......2005-06-14

this is not a terrible choice of a style guide for those looking for a classic movie star icon sort of style. it is excellent for bathroom decor and can serve as a beginning for someone looking to cutivate a style similiar to audrey hepburn, grace kelley, jackie o, or marilyn monroe. a word of caution, it is written in a very brittish vernacular.

3 out of 5 stars Don't take it so seriously.......2005-03-29

This is intended as a jokey gift book, not a style manual, so if you're looking for the latter this isn't it. It is a very light read, agreed, and yes, it's from a British publisher and a British perspective. But if you want a small, glossy present for a wannabe friend, or just want something stylish to keep in your bathroom, this isn't a bad choice.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2005-03-10

.............and buy just about any other book. This book is poorly organized and I can' think of a single bit of information I haven't read many times. Spend your money on something else.

      Book Description

I Want to Be the Kitty marks the eighth collection of this award-winning strip and is the follow-up to the successful What Now. As usual, the lovable duo of Earl the dog and his feline friend Mooch can be counted on for charming adventures and out-loud laughs. The sweet and unique friendship of this special dog and kitty comes through in every strip. When Mooch decides one January morning he's going to hibernate by staying in bed all winter, Earl tries desperately to get him out of bed until he finds out himself how "toashty" it is, in the words of Mooch. Next thing you know, Mooch has a bedmate who announces "I'll see ya in March." The two snore though hibernation together-that is, until they are called for dinner. With its expressive art and clever, sometimes philosophical, pet banter, Mutts has built a large and loyal fan base among readers and fellow cartoonists worldwide. The strip has been the discussion topic of Tonight show guests (Brooke Shields), it's earned the National Cartoonists Society's coveted Comic Strip of the Year Award, and it can be found in more than 500 daily newspapers. And now, as a testament to its ever-growing popularity, fans in New Jersey can show their loyalty to the strip-and animal protection-by getting a state license plate complete with Earl and Mooch and the slogan "Animal Friendly." In Mutts, cartoonist Patrick McDonnell has created a classic strip that not only delivers consistent laughs but often a message as well.

We adore Mutts (both parents and kids ages 6 & 8). Funny and cute and a great compilation of both daily and Sunday comic strips.

5 out of 5 stars Best comic book ever.......2004-07-30

This book is just great. I baught it and enjoyed reading it over and over again. It has great characters in it. I love the Woofie comics on pages 69 and 41. I just really enjoy the little pink sock comics like the one on page 79. Things like Mooch curing bad habits by smacking a newspaper and everything else. This book is great for everyone and as a bonus there is no sass-mouthing or inapporite stuff in it. Just like Earl says in page 65 last panel top comic "...(It is) fun for the whole family!"

As one of the few folks who made it out of the National Lampoon alive and writing, P. J. O'Rourke is--a comment that might please him more than most humorists--an elder statesman of American humor. While this says much about the thinness of the field, you gotta give him his props.

Modern Manners is good, early O'Rourke, a book that you can read and enjoy without being to the right of Francisco Franco. Who can resist lines such as "A hat should be taken off when you greet a lady and left off for the rest of your life. Nothing looks more stupid than a hat." Or, "Don't wear a tweed jacket to work unless you expect to flush a covey of quail from behind the Xerox machine." Manners are a moving target, and some sections are in need of revision (cocaine really was a big deal, wasn't it?), but don't let that dissuade you. By and large, Modern Manners comes through admirably.

5 out of 5 stars Biting, Laugh Out Loud Read.......2007-01-15

If you enjoy the intelligent and biting humor of a Dennis Miller and the vocabulary of a George Will you will love this book. If your idea of a great satirical read is "Mad Magazine" you will enjoy this book. If you think the Als - Gore and Franken - are brilliant you will hate this book.

1 out of 5 stars Perverted disgusting garbage.......2006-03-20

Reading Mr. O'Rourke's "All the Troubles in the World" gave me the impression that he is an excellent political/economics analyst with a tolerable bad streak. The fine writing in that book encouraged me to acquire some of his other work.

I was horribly repulsed by the explicit language, immature humor and overall repugnance of his guide to manners. What I had hoped would be a light poke at contemporary society so sickened me that I threw the book in the trash before I was halfway done. I regret reading even that far.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Manners: An Etiquette Book for Rude People.......2002-12-24

Modern Manners: An Etiquette Book for Rude People written by P.J. O'Rourke is a humorus book. A book the will get you laughing and you will not spot till the end.

This is some of O'Rourke's early musings, but neverthless, it is a very funny, tongue-in-cheek way to spoof manners. As with most if not all of O'Rourke's writings you read it for the levity, flippancy, and jocularity, well you will NOT be disappointed.

Read this book if you want to get away from the serious side of life. As the frivolity takes hold, you'll find that you are more relazed after a really good chuckle.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2002-01-21

I am a big PJ fan but this was disappointing with a serious lack of content. Start with his best works, Holidays in Hell and Parliament of Whores; then if you really want more work you're way down to this.

4 out of 5 stars The best guide I've ever come across.......2001-04-27

Fantastic book, very funny. I was a bit annoyed this edition cut down the picture at the front of the book, which were the funniest parts of the original edition (hence four stars and not five), but nevertheless a very good read.

The title comes from an exchange between filmmakers Howard Hawks and Peter Bogdanovich. Asked which directors he preferred, Hawks replied, "I liked almost anybody that made you realize who in the devil was making the picture." Hawks is talking about distinctive directorial personality, about movies that bear the stamp of a filmmaker's character. This book collects 16 interviews Bogdanovich conducted with some of the best directors working in the golden age of Hollywood. All of them, from the famous--Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Chuck Jones, and Hawks himself--to the lesser known but equally wonderful Leo McCarey, George Cukor, Josef von Sternberg, and Edgar G. Ulmer--had a remarkable and inimitable style. In their interviews, they provide insight into their craft and a view of Hollywood's golden age that is informative, anecdotal, and often hysterically funny.

                Book Description

In this fascinating chronicle of Hollywood and the grand art of making movies, Peter Bogdanovich--director, screenwriter, actor, and critic--interviews sixteen legendary directors of the first hundred years of film:

Robert Aldrich  George Cukor  Allan Dwan  Howard Hawks  Alfred Hitchcock  Chuck Jones  Fritz Lang  Joseph H. Lewis  Sidney Lumet  Leo McCartey  Otto Preminger  Don Siegel  Josef von Sternberg  Frank Tashlin  Edgar G. Ulmer  Raoul Walsh

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, and Informative........2006-12-10

This book gathers together 16 interviews the author conducted with some of the greatest directors the Golden Age of Hollywood ever produced.

All of them had their own style of film making, and are well worth searching out on video, and DVD.

In their interviews, they provide insight into their craft and a glimpse of Hollywood's golden age that will add considerablly to your understanding, and appreciation of the Golden Age.

If you have Netflix, or other similar service, then I heartily recommend that after reading this book you add films by these folks to your watch list, and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Critical access to the creative process.......2003-03-25

Regardless of one's feelings about the egomania of author Bogdanovich (and it certainly bleeds through every page), he provides the creative world a great service by sharing his many years of interviews with some of the masters of American Film.

Contained within these pages is a critical access to the creative process. Each director interviewed (obviously some more than others) provides invaluable insight into the nuts and bolts of film directing. Bogdanovich has compiled with this book, an indispensable historical document that does much to inspire, educate and guide any aspiring film director.

I particularly valued Alan Dwan's insights into the importance of communicating character relationships into the narrative. I have incorperated much of the late director's invaluable advice into my attempts at stage direction.

All in all a must have for anybody interested in directing or gaining insight into the creative process.

                4 out of 5 stars Would be better w/o Bogdonavich's endless blather.......2003-03-01

I have to give this book only 4 stars due to the overbearing writing voice of Peter Bog. The guy tries so hard to make sure the reader knows that he's had a close personal relationship with the great directors that it's painful to read. He also tries to put himself in this group as a director, for example, when he remarks on a play that a few of the directors in this books have staged, noting that he, too, has staged this play.
Really, it's not what he's saying, it's how he's saying it.

Anyway, if you can tune out Bogdonovich, the rest of the book is okay.

5 out of 5 stars Access to Genius Otherwise Unavailable.......2002-04-30

The title was suggested by Howard Hawks who once observed, "...I liked almost anybody that made you realize who in the devil was making the picture...Because the director's the storyteller and should have his own method of telling it." Hawks is one of the 16 "legendary film directors" represented in this volume. It is important to keep in mind that these are conversations rather than interviews such as those conducted by Robert J. Emery in The Directors: Take One and its sequel, The Directors Take Two, as well as interviews conducted by Richard Schickel in The Men Who Made the Movies. It is also worth noting that Bogdanovich is himself a distinguished director of films such as The Last Picture Show, What's Up, Doc?, They All Laughed (a personal favorite of mine), and Texasville. As a result of his own background, Bogdanovich's questions and comments reflect somewhat different interests and perspectives than do those of Emery and Schickel.

I rate all of these books Five Stars but probably enjoyed reading Bogdanovich's book the most because the conversations ramble along somewhat messily, as most of my own conversations tend to do, and also because Bogdanovich is more actively involved in the interaction than Emery and Schickel are. As a reader, I feel as if I were really an eavesdropper as 16 directors casually share their opinions, information about specific films and actors, gossip, "war stories," and overall evaluations of their careers' various successes and failures. At no time does Bogdanovich seem intrusive or manipulative. Moreover, perhaps to an extent he did not realize when writing this book, he also reveals a great deal about himself...much of it endearing and some of it admirable. His passion for film making and his appreciation of the great directors are almost palpable. Readers' interests about various directors and their respective films obviously vary. I include myself among those who are die-hard film buffs and so I enjoyed reading every chapter and every word in each chapter. Indeed, each conversation was for this amateur "gourmet" a feast to be consumed with delight and, yes, gratitude.

I wonder if we (the movie fans) appreciate that we have two of the greatest film historians ever still with us today? Peter Bogdanovich and Martin Scorsese not only make movies, they also have gone to great lengths to give us insight into those who came before them in filmmaking - Scorsese with his personal journey through American films and Bogdanovich with his insightful interviews of Welles, Ford and the long list of pioneers he included in this massive volume. Here we are given more than 800 pages of interviews, some of which are fully developed and others which are but snipets of interesting careers. We should be thankful he included the snipets with the others, because in many cases these are the only true looks we have into these men who led today's young filmmakers to find their way. From Allan Dwan to Chuck Jones, Bogdanovich explores with his interviews what was behind the eyes of the men who did many things in filmmaking for the first time and with distinction. He includes some who were there when filmmaking was in its infancy, and some who started in television and moved to movies. The length and some of the lesser-known names among the subjects at first gave me pause in tackling this book, but I surprisingly found each of the interviews interesting and now count this among the best (among many) reference books I own about movies. I've gone back to it several times when viewing some of the films these men have made, and that, for me, makes this a valuable posession.

Ned Rorem at times has seemed to be everywhere in the theatrical and musical scene of the last 70 years: collaborating with Jean Cocteau, writing on the music of Schoenberg and Bartok, producing Noel Coward's plays. These occasional essays contribute a set of personal reflections and reminiscences of these and other artists rather than a sustained critical analysis. Rorem is a highly versatile and idiosyncratic writer, and this is a highly personal collection by someone with a unique view on 20th century high culture.

The best way to keep your kids fit (and even help them lose weight if they need to), is to get outside and start playing.

This wonderful book, Go Outside, has loads of great play ideas. If it's been a few years since you were a youngster, open to any page and you'll soon be smiling with memories. There's things to do at home, the beach, the pool, and every season of the year.

The photographs are wonderful, full of smiling happy children, and every idea includes a "What You'll Need" list so you'll be sure to have all your materials gathered. Most can be done with everyday items anyway.

This book is a great gift idea for parents too.

2 out of 5 stars Organizational Behavior, 11th Edition by Stephen P. Robbins.......2006-05-20

This is the text that we are currently using in my Organizational Behavior class. While the text is well laid out, easy to read and well-written, Robbins' tendency to blame the baby-boomer generation for all of society's modern-day problems and ethical issues is a bit much to swallow. I do not enjoy reading mere opinions that potentially carry the weight of fact by students when presented in a text-format by a "OB professional" and not presented as merely the opinion of the author. For example, Robbins states in chapter 3, page 74:

"By the early 1990s, a large portion of middle and top management positions in business organizations were held by Boomers. The loyalty of Boomers is to their careers. Their focus is inward and their primary concern is with looking out for "Number One." Such self-centered values would be consistent with a decline in ethical standards. Could this help explain the alleged decline in business ethics beginning in the late 1970s? The potential good news in this analysis is that Xers are now in the process of moving into middle-management slots and soon will be rising into top management. Since their loyalty is to relationships, they are more likely to consider the ethical implications of their actions on others around them. The result? We might look forward to an uplifting of ethical standards in business over the next decade or two merely as a result of changing values within the managerial ranks" (Robbins, 2005, Organizational Behavior, Eleventh Edition).

The author provides no evidence to substantiate this statement. Thus, it is merely the authors' opinion. To me, Robbins' statement in and of itself is unethical, as it attempts to persuade not from the level of expertise of the author, but from the author's opinion. With subjective statements like that stated for truth in a text, it is no wonder that many people view Organizational Behavior professionals with cynicism. Yet this is the type of text that college students are learning from. If a statement is born from the opinion of the author, then the text should point that out. It is unethical to not do so. Reader beware to distinguish the author's opinion from substantiated fact.

The book I had received from Escobook was not hardcover as it was promised. It was also an Indian edition. (No color, thin paper, no different than photocopy) I paid almost $80 for $20 book. As soon as the the seller was informed about my dissatisfaction of the product, she sent my money back.

                      1 out of 5 stars BEWARE!.......2005-10-04

If you are expecting a real version, buyer beware. The version I received through Amazon was not a real US copy, but rather the "Eastern Economy Edition". It was a "photo-offeset reproduction" which is legally for sale only in Bangledesh, Burma, etc. You can purchase these on E-bay for a fraction of what I was charged. It is a black and white version only, so pictures and graphs intended for color are much harder to read. Since it is basically a photocopy of the original, even the text is harder to read than it should be.

Either get the real version or get it cheaper.

                        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Authors' attitudes are showing..........2006-07-12

The slant of this book is hard to ignore.

It emphasizes the importance of "go along to get along" over almost all else.

In the battle between individuals and big companies for who controls individual will, who owns the knowledge in an individual's head, and how much of an individual's life belongs to the organization, "Your Attitude is Showing" is a white flag for anyone with an independant mind.

The authors' arguments for why a person should (must) set aside self and individuality for the good of the company and wishes of the management are flawed. It assumes that there will be good things to come for the person who improves attitudes, and fails to consider the grander issues, like whether it's desireable for a society as a whole to create a sea of automatons with great attitudes.

To this book, my answer would be: success comes not through smiles and gladhanding. To build a world with any aspirations of justice and peace, we need more than just attitude. We need substance, people who will work hard, and honesty.

Solving human relations problems requires something a bit stronger than the band-aid of day to day attitudes that this book prescribes.
