Book Description
The life and work of the first woman art director of a mass-market publication, an early role model for women in design. One of the unsung pioneers of American graphic design, Cipe Pineles was art director of Glamour, Seventeen, Charm, and Mademoiselle magazines between 1930 and 1960, helped to create the institutional identity for Lincoln Center in the 1960s, and taught generations of students at Parsons School of Design. Tracing Pineles's career from young immigrant to "ranking" female in the design world, Martha Scotford chronicles her professional life at a time when few women were involved in design and assesses her contributions to graphic design and magazine design in particular.

Design God Alert!.......2000-11-18
If Paul Rand was the grandfather of American graphic design, then Cipe Pineles is the grandmother! That alone is a great reason to make sure you have a copy of this book in your reference library if you are an art director or just love great editorial design. The writing in the book is great and goes into detail, but the real flaw is that you only get to see tiny thumbnails of her design work. While this gives you a good taste of her style, it leaves you hungry wanting to see more. But until more books are done on Cipe (pronounced See-Pea), this book is a must have.
All designers should read this book........1999-10-16
As a student of graphic design, I could have not been more fortunate that this book came out when it did, it was my only research source for a design project I did last year. After reading it, I felt as though I knew Cipe personally. Scotford's account is rich with sensitivity and detail, and is well-organized and well-written.
An entire book about a woman designer of signifigance........1999-05-17
I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a biography about a talented woman who shaped magazine design in the early days. As a designer and design educator, I especially appreciated having her professional and personal life put into the context of the time in which she and her husbands worked. Also a valuable reference.
Will the real Cipe please stand up?.......1999-03-17
Cipe Pineles was someone I had heard much about but knew very little of her work or history. I've come away from reading this book feeling that Cipe must have been charming and idiosyncratic, but I still don't feel I know much about her or her design philosophy. She comes across as almost disdainful of the work she is best known for, designing and art directing women's fashion magazines. It's also written a bit dryly with some confusing back-and-forth of events. Don't forget your magnifying glass; the examples of her design work are presented not much larger than thumbnails! In all, not worth the steep price and not, I fear, the definitive insight and appreciation of Cipe Pineles.

Could not stop.......2007-08-15
If you are just getting started in the industry, with no help, this is the perfect book.
No frills how-to guide........2007-03-09
This is an excellent resource guide for anyone who wants to get into modeling. It's a very easy read and lays it out for you in simple terms. It basically says "do this", "don't do this". It's also a great book to read for parents who are interested in getting children involved in the industry. A great value overall.
Waste of a tree!.......2006-07-30
Roshumba Williams may very well be the sweetest person on the face of the earth but this book is terrible! Contradictive statements, lackluster presentation, absence of photographs, surface information and a feel that it was published to grab a little piece of the book sales pie. I question if the positive comment writers really read this book. And how can anyone who knows this Roshumba Williams personally write an unbiased report about this book?
I am afraid this book was thrown together by a corporate ladder climber who duped Roshumba Williams into believing it was a great way to make MONEY. Doesn't seem to have been built for the end consumer in any way. I can see only two uses for this book. A door stop as I am now using mine. Or print the next batch on toilet paper thus rendering it useful.
A total WASTE of my hard earned dollars!!!
Good if you want to be a fashion model.......2005-07-17
This is probably the best of the current books on the craft of modeling. It is limited to fashion modeling (little of use is said about other disciplines), but covers that exhaustively with very readable text and drawings to illustrate her points.
I don't know that you can learn to model from a book, but if you want to try, and want to be a fashion model, this is an excellent book to learn from.
A waste of $$..........2004-10-13
I was surprised that Roshumba Williams, who is a beautiful woman, would be part of this kind of book. I seemed like someone who did'nt know much about modeling wrote this, and Roshumba put her name on it. There arn't even any pictures of her inside, no pictures at all.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model, 2nd Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to).......2007-07-04
This is a great book for folks who are looking for basic information about the modeling industry and tips for getting a foot in the door. Having gone through some of the areas discussed in the book, it's right on the money about expectations and industry structure... Very helpful!
Pretty Ironic title don't you think?.......2007-06-15
Ignore my rating. Wouldn't know if it was any good. But the title gave me a laugh. :o)

Classic Stan Lee/John Romita issues in black & white.......2007-06-11
This volume collects Amazing Spider-Man issues 44-65 and Annual #4. Lee's plots span two to four issues each and feature supervillians The Lizard, The Shocker, Kraven the Hunter, The Vulture, Kingpin and Doctor Octopus. Peter Parker's friends Gwen Stacy, Mary-Jane Watson and Harry Osborn also emerge in this run. Amazon's current listing of Steve Ditko as illustrator is incorrect. John Romita (Sr.) drew all monthly issues in this collection (Stan Lee's brother Larry Lieber drew the one annual). As testament of Romita's skill the artwork impresses despite the removal of his coloring.
I prefer the Amazing Spider-Man DVD-ROM for its complete collection of the entire ASM run in full color PDFs. However, the Marvel Essentials series offers convenient, inexpensive access to these 40-year old Spider-Man comics without needing a computer. The flow of these issues encourages sequential reading.
Impressive post Ditko.......2006-05-01
Stan Lee had an uphill battle to rebuild the series after Steve Ditko left it and it was obvious he was experimenting. Peter Parker would undergo some changes including moving out on his own and developing a relationship with Gwen Stacy. Unfortunately Lee seemed to get overwhelmed with responsibility and poured Spiderman into a rather long sequence over the tablets involving the Kingpin. Peter gets almost erased from the series only to finally find life again in the 80's issues. Despite this it's still a vast improvement over the later Ross Andre/Gerry Conway hack jobs.

BrainBuilder Crosswords.......2006-03-20
During my free time, I often do Crossword puzzles and Sudoku puzzles. I had a Giant Crossword Puzzle book at my house, but the crosswords in that book were easy and were beginning to get boring. So I searched the web (and stores) for a more challenging Crossword book. I came across Brain-Builder Crosswords. At first, judging by the cover of the book, the puzzles seemed hard. When I turned to the first page of the puzzles, they seemed challenging, yet not as challenging as Sunday Crosswords. My dad and I decided to buy the book, and now I am doing the Crosswords! The book contains seventy-five puzzles and costs $6.95. Though the puzzles are challenging and improve your general knowledge skills, there could have been more puzzles for the price of $6.95. If you want quantity, and mediocre quality, go for a Crossword Book published by PennyPress. But if you want Crosswords that make you sit and think for hours, this is your book!

Pat Blanchard, The Successful Trainers Resource.......2007-06-11
Great book! I've been professionally designing and conducting sales training for 15 years and have never come across a book like this. It is well designed from a learning perspective and gets right down to the nitty gritty of how to get clients! C.J. Hayden is excellent at taking an overwhelming process and putting it in to a simple structure that works. If you are a new consultant, coach or professional selling services, and are tired of hearing the what and the why and need the how to this book is for you.
Action Oriented Marketing.......2007-05-27
This is a "must have" book if you are seeking to build your business and gain more clients. C.J. makes it so easy by giving a recipe of actionable items that move you towards your business goals.
New businesses are often swarmed with advertising and promotion opportunities and don't know how to decide what to market with. C.J. reminds and brings you along through the marketing process which includes: product, price, place and promotion. She identifies the marketing strategies and a daily action plan ensures that you are working on the marketing strategy success ingredients that will get you profitable results!
This is such a great book to work on alone or with a group. The foundational "how to" in developing your marketing plan.
Review of Get ClientsNow! ----------- by C.J. Hayden.......2007-05-13
This book applies mostly to people in sales. I found it too basic and market specific to be very helpful.
Get Clients Now! A 28 day marketing Program for Professionals.......2007-05-12
Very useful product, with many templates ot use. Information is broad and general enough to allow to use in many different professions; from real estate, to therapists to coaching and consulting. Yet information is presented in a way that allows for it to easily lend itself to any of the above professions.
Expectations Too High.......2007-04-13
The title of the book is more exciting than the information within the book. I would not recommend this book and wish I could find my receipt for a return.
I really thought after reading this book that I would have a full-proof marketing method for getting clients within the consultanting business. Thus, perhaps my expectations were too high.

Get Clients Now: A 28-Day Marketing Program for Professionals and Consultants, by business coach C.J. Hayden, lays out a very precise marketing and sales system actually designed to be completely customized for optimal effectiveness by anyone in the service industry. Employing a "cookbook model" to help readers create this individualized action plan, it first shows how to determine which ingredients are missing from current marketing and sales activities and then suggests the specific tools and tactics that will immediately get a successful effort underway. The truly unique part of this book, however, begins in chapter 6, which breaks down Hayden's explicit four-week system into 28 separate sections that are meant to be read and acted upon one day at a time. The volume's final part, called "The Strategies," then outlines a collection of practical "marketing recipes" that correspond to various plans of attack determined earlier in the process. Each offers realistic tips (on topics such as direct contact and follow-up, networking and referral building, and writing and publicity) that directly correspond to the personal goals, strengths, and weaknesses readers already have identified. Further advice and inspirational anecdotes from recognized experts, along with additional resources, are also interspersed throughout the text. --Howard Rothman

Get Clients Now! 28 Day Marketing Program.......2006-09-30
I own a small business and I am looking to find more clients. This book is a must have for anyone who wants to offer services to businesses. I have already found this book to informative, simple to understand, and it has given me new skills to market my business without all the expense. Although I haven't done this for 28 days, I already have some leads on new clients just by doing some of the steps mentioned. Any one who offers a service related business should read this book. Truly a lifesaver!
Thanks
You too can have clients.......2006-09-16
This book demystified marketing for me. I read other marketing books, but could not then commit to one course of action. In plain language, C. J. Hayden helps you to pinpoint where to focus your energy. Then she helps you to develop a step-by-step plan based on your needs.
If you are looking for a book about how to write a great sales letter, this is not it. If you are looking for a way to develop a low-maintenance business development plan, buy this book. You can spend as little or as much time as you want on this program. She explains how to get the ball rolling, and reminds you that development can be an ongoing activity.
Awesome Information.......2006-06-26
Very good information. Gives the reader a step by step process of getting clients without insulting intelligence.
Specific steps for marketing success.......2006-04-06
Thesis: With this 28-day marketing program, you will locate, land, and keep new clients in greater numbers than you've probably ever dreamed possible. It includes steps that are easy to follow and practical for professionals and consultants.
Structure: A 28-day program described in ten chapters spread over three sections: The Setup, The System, and The Strategies.
Here are some sections I found especially valuable:
What Really Works? Effective Marketing Strategies (Ch. 1; pp. 5-21)
C.J. delivers a great lead-in that primes the reader with sound and specific information about what to consider. She speaks to the "hows" and "whys" behind marketing. Graphics such as the one on page nine ("Marketing strategies for the service business") make the material easily accessible to reader, helping break down any possible barriers of intimidation.
You're Ready...Let's Go! Putting the System into Action (Ch. 6; pp. 85-127)
This chapter leads the reader through the entire 28-day process with excellent details and tools (such as the worksheet on page 89) to help track progress. It's the culmination of the previous two chapters that discuss building your own system from a menu of tried-and-true marketing ingredients. C.J. tells you (1) what marketing ingredients to choose from, (2) how to choose what's best for your situation, and (3) specifically how to put the plan in action.
Following Up: When You Have Plenty of Numbers But You're Not Calling (Ch. 8, pp. 171-184)
This chapter is one of four in the third and final section: The Strategies. These four chapters help the reader focus on practical solutions for common problems encountered during the 28-day program and beyond. Chapter Eight focuses on breaking down barriers that cause inaction. It provides practical solutions to help the reader actually follow through on acquired leads.
Get quick and easy advice on what to do for marketing.......2005-11-09
It's easy to get overwhelmed with business and self-help books because authors provide a wealth of suggestions and no clear path. This is where Hayden's book stands out. She breaks everything down from the six marketing strategies and setting up measurable goals to selecting ten doable activities.
The book also includes two worksheets that work with the program for easier reviewing and tracking progress. While you can follow the program alone, she recommends having support from someone other than family. It could be a coach or a colleague in the industry.
The organized and methodical program guides you through each step. Reading the how doesn't take long and the program begins mid-way through the book. The latter half of the book describes the activities you can do while following the 28-day program. So you won't get overwhelmed at the thought of "too many pages to read."
I worked on it as soon as I started reading the book. Having this guide took a lot of pressure off of me as I know exactly what to do once I'd put my plan together. Not many business books have urged me to take action and this one succeeded. I know that after a month of following this process, I'll see positive results.
While the book sounds simple, and it is — it takes work to make it happen. Instead of taking the long route and learning from trial-and-error, Hayden provides you with a direct route so you do the activities and don't worry about overdoing it.
Some people may not like strict rules. The book isn't like that. It's okay to adjust the plan so you do six or seven activities instead of ten. It helps you figure out where you're stuck in the marketing process and provides the tools for working past it. The book is over five years old and its contents are as relevant today as when it first came out. I can say with certainty that anyone who follows the plan will get great results.
