Biased Opinions.......2004-09-03
This is wonderfully written and easy to read for anyone familiar with art history and its lexicon. However, I would not recommend this book to a beginning art history student not familiar with the problems associated with earlier art historians (even modern art historians should be considered carefully). Wofflin is rather biased on the part of the High Renaissance artists and he does not look upon other artists immediately before or after very fairly. Wofflin does very successfully capture the High Renaissance and its style in this book. Read carefully, this is a must read for any student of art history.
Classical Book about Classic Art.......2000-11-11
Although this book mainly focus only in Italian Renaissance, it contains enough issues must be addressed for this fascinating art reflorishing period as a whole. The analysis method used in this book is full of sparkling, with a perfect combination of technical points as well as passion. I began to love the classical art because of this book. And, believe me, when now I'm interested in photography, still I can find my viewpoint be influenced by this book, say, which combination of light and construction of the picture will render a BEAUTIFUL feeling. Any top art book should combine ration and passion. And here is a perfect example.

First Rate!!!!!.......2007-09-22
This is among the very best for timeless advice on what is fashion style and elegance. There are clear guidelines and clear rationals. It is exceptionally well written. I found her short section of advice to petites to be better than any book I have read . In this section she succintly makes 27 points on how to dress TALL. This book is the real deal.
A good wake-up call.......2007-08-27
After reading this book, I gave myself a good talking to about my closet. Now I've found a tailor, had all my falling hems fixed, skirt hems adjusted and favorite items tailored to fit me better. More importantly I got rid of all the things that no longer fit me, are no longer in style, or are just plain unattrative. What a relief!
So glad I was given this book. I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe without doing any shopping!
Like this one.......2007-08-18
I read this book cover to cover. It is very informational for someone like me who has a hard time putting outfits together and seeing what I need and what I don't need. I like the detailed advice on the difference between cheap and well made. Also the tips on where to find well made things at a better price. I didn't find my body shape in her descriptions but at 5'11" that's not easy to do. I wish someone would write a book for tall women. I am still giving it 5 stars though because I found the rest of the book very informative.
A book for the "little people" out there...........2007-08-12
One reviewer mentioned that Kendall Farr is condescending toward her audience. There are remarks such as "now _you_ have a fashion stylist of your very own" that is a little reminiscent of Fairy Godmother...I wanted tips, not someone to address me as if I were some "Clueless" project.
One hallmark of being condescending is that she repeatedly uses words that fly over my head... "Am I just a fashion dummy? I thought I knew something..." I keep saying to myself as I flip through the book and futily Google words that don't seem to have a solid definition. Farr says, "Make sure you choose styles with pintucking, ruching, bomber style, motocross style, nipped at the waist..." It goes on and on and on, page after page until I feel like she assumes we all know the fashion lingo that she uses daily. A glossary would have been merciful.
I do match body type B and am still foggy on what she wants me to do. Very wordy, atmospheric suggestions with no pictures, no diagrams, no sketches... just 4 figures of women with "the look" that I should be trying to achieve.
I do appreciate how she targets the pitfalls of fashion and how she encourages only shopping for a few pieces at a time to make sure you have the right fit, material, and comfort level. I also appreciate how she sort of says to dress your age (ie, "Goodbye Hello Kitty t-shirts"). I am 29 and having a rough time with finding fashion that suits the age... Shopping at American Eagle or Abercrombie or even Old Navy leaves me feeling, uh, just not put together well, and sometimes I even feel like I must be manifesting a lack of maturity by my fashion choices. So I can handle her prompts for increasing sophistication, and I have had luck finding things that match her descriptions in stores such as TJ Maxx, Maurices, and even at the local thrift shop. So I thank her for that.
Oh-- and if you want help sorting your closet, she has good tips. She eerily starts reminding me of a person with obsessive compulsive disorder by the end of the chapter, but the first half got me into gear and my closet is in great shape now.
I own the Lucky Style Shopping Manual as well, and have read both of these books practically word for word. Lucky makes sure that you understand every word with pictures of beautiful clothing ensembles, diagrams including terminology, etc. But I'm still glad to have heard Kendall Farr's approach. I probably won't keep her book, but it was a good one-time read. I'll be keeping Lucky forever.
Good commonsense advice........2007-08-06
Even though I'm still having some difficulty figuring out which body type I am, her advice is solid. This is my new reference guide for all things fashion. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a rundown on the basics and anyone who feels sort of hopeless in this area. She doesn't talk down to her audience, nor does she engage in a lot of industry jargon. She just gets down to business. I appreciate that, exactly what I was looking for!

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Gripping past the end.......2006-07-19
Chrono Crusade is a very good series throughout the first few books. But in these final few, the pace is picked up, and I found myself unable to put the book down- even on my third time through! The story flows amazingly well, and the end of this book left me desperate for the next. The characters are well fleshed out, and the emotions are quite compelling. If you haven't picked this book or this series up yet, I strongly encourage you to- you have no idea what a great story you are missing.
RESCUE EFFORT.......2006-06-12
Rosette and Chrono have slipped aboard the Sinner's giant floating fortress ironically called "Eden" in an effort to rescue Azamaria and hopefully bring Joshua back to his senses. But before they can do that they'll have to make it through Aion's powerful demon allies, and Rosette's lifeforce is at its lowest ebb, so Chrono can't revert back to his true form without killing her in the process. Our duo are not the only ones on Aion's trail either. All the forces of Pandemonium, led by the fierce warrior Duke Daffau, have come to kill the Sinners and end their rebellion once and for all.
I was a real fan of the early episodes of the anime version of Chrono Crusade, which brought me to the manga. Unfortunately, the anime got caught up in end of the world scenarios and misunderstood silly religious symbolism right out of Evangelion. The manga version is at once easier to understand and vastly different than the anime. I would have to say that Volume 7 is one of the weakest volumes of the series I have read, because it's mostly one battle scene after another. But I'm ok with that since this is the next to last volume. It just seemed a little too Hollywood blow-em-up to me. The real part of the story to me has always been Rosette's search for Joshua, and mirroring this, Satella's search for her lost sister long ago taken by Aion. So to me, all the demon-killing and comedy is just window dressing that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Even so, the manga is light years better than the anime. A nice bonus story at the end of this volume which really hits on why I like Chrono Crusade is a flashback to Rosette's first acclimation to joining the Magdalan Order and her first friend.
Never liked Manga until Chrono Crusade..........2006-04-19
I first discovered this manga while living in Germany. I got up to book 6 before coming back and having to wait for English editions to show up and its been driving me nuts! I never really got into manga or graphic novels until Chrono Crusade, which I absolutely love! The storyline and characters are gripping. This is a definite must-read.

Uncle John Presents: Book of the Dumb 2 is the perfect remedy to a world gone stupid. John Scalzi has put together another collection devoted to the absurd antics of nincompoops, numbskulls, and nitwits. Nineteen chapters cover a broad range of utter stupidity—from political pinheads and famous fools to moronic movies and terrible television. Most important of all, the book continues to show that dumb doesn't discriminate—it comes in all sizes and sizes from every outpost of the planet.
Customer Reviews:
Just as hilariously dumb as the original.......2005-03-23
I LOVE this book and I must disagree with the other reviewer that it isn't as good as the first Book of the Dumb. I mean where else can you read about the dumb things that Jewel, Michael Jackson, and Richard Simmons did, along with dumb things that regular people do every day from all around the world?
This book will make you laugh out loud and I hope to see a Book of the Dumb 3 very soon because I will buy that one too.
Real disappointing sequal.......2005-03-09
The first Dr. John's Book of the Dumb was a laugh riot. However, the second one just left me cold... Perhaps with so many books devoted to the dumb things we humans do, this sequal wasn't even necesssary.
I'm sorry to say that it's the only Dr John book I've owned that is not going to be part of my permanent collection
Book Description
In Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price) schemes and murders his way to a dukedom. Robert Hamer's pitch-black comedy of manners is legendary for having Alec Guinness play all of Louis's rivals and targets--among them the doddering Reverend Lord Henry D'Ascoyne and the formidably militant suffragette Lady Agatha D'Ascoyne. Perhaps the greatest Ealing comedy, Kind Hearts and Coronets is equally a brilliant satire of the English class system and a playful drama of doubles and confused identity.
Hamer was a heavy drinker whose career would soon go off the rails; Price was gay and troubled. Michael Newton looks into the turbulent personalities that formed the complex style of Kind Hearts and Coronets, with its dandies and blackmailers, aristocrats and assassins. And he unravels that style's fusion of cynicism, contempt, sparkling wit and philosophical curiosity. 'It is very funny,' Newton says, 'and, in a demonically subtle way, very wise. And for the bitter, the easy self-deprecators, the procrastinators, the snobs, the junkies of possibility, the flirts, the wits, the wastrels . . . it is perhaps the perfect movie.'
Customer Reviews:
More than a vehicle for Alec Guinness.......2006-01-12
This was a terrific entry in the BFI series that really enhanced my appreciation of the movie. Typically, "Kind Hearts and Coronets" is remembered only for Alec Guinness appearing in 8 roles.
This book, however, goes beyond that. It pays attention to Dennis Price's performance (and he really holds the movie together.) It discusses the source novel and shows how the movie was influenced by WWII and the revival of interest in Edwardian styles after the war in the "Austerity" era. The film itself receives a close reading, paying attention to the various "beginnings" and "endings" of the film.
In short, this was simply one of the best books in the BFI series, and it made me want to see the movie again.

Book Description
This essay collection reflects the scope and reach of Leonard Cohen’s influence. It ranges from academic essays that consider the treatment of the Holocaust in Cohen’s poetry, aspects of personal and national identity in his novels, and the theoretical problems of performance in his songs, to less formal discussions such as an Internet newsgroup thread on “Closing Time” and a description of fan reactions to his concert performances in Germany. Several writers pay tribute to Cohen by contributing poems that “translate” his work into new idioms. The book also includes two new poems by Cohen himself. Intricate Preparations is fully international in scope, with contributions coming from Australia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Norway, and Finland, as well as Canada—including something from the Governor-General herself.

Great book for younger children!.......2006-01-09
I was looking for a way to introduce my 7 year old son to the rules and movements of chess. We used this book over the course of a weekend and were able to get him into more thoughtful play.
The examples and quizzes helped him to see possibilities that he was previously missing.
Outstanding book for introducing your child to chess!.......2002-07-08
I have an 8 year old son who has always wanted to play chess, but has been a little intimidate by the complexity of the game. A kind librarian at our local public library saw my son carrying around my copy of the "Idiot's Guide to Chess" and thought he could use a more age-appropriate book.
He has enjoyed "Start Playing Chess" so much, I have had to buy him his own copy. It is an excellent book; there are large diagrams with easy-to-understand explanations and illustrations on the moves and the rules. I can honestly say that because of this book, my son has rapidly caught on to the game, and is now looking at his move in terms of strategy, as opposed to playing chess like you would checkers.
A very enjoyable, well written book that will help any child learn this wonderful game.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent daily "devotional" for managers.......2007-03-24
This book offers excellent insight into Drucker's writings on business philosophy. For those who have never read Drucker at all, this book is a great starting point, as it encapsulates much of his writing into a single volume. The book is of particular value to anyone working in a service-related company, especially in a society where knowledge is one of the most powerful assets managers are required to protect and preserve.
An entry from January 7th reads: "Knowledge workers own the means of production...the organization needs them more than they need the organization..." The action point listed is, "Attract and retain the highest producing knowledge workers by treating them and their knowledge as the organization's most valuable assets."
The information provided in this book, when put into practice, will help any manager become more efficient and reflective about how her/his actions fit into the bigger picture. The foreword, by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great, is also very worth reading and gives a little-seen and inspirational glimpse of Drucker.
Great.......2007-02-12
The book was in good condition and was delivered on time. It is a great read!!
Because you have 2 minutes a day.......2006-10-03
Every morning when you get to your office, you boot up your computer and you wait - conservatively - 2 minutes. During those 2 minutes, you should be reading that day's entry in the "Daily Drucker." Whether the Topic of the Month is "decision-making," "leadership" or "organizational behavior," Drucker's signature style will clear your head and give you a "swing thought" for the rest of the day. A daily dose of Drucker will remind you how you "should" run your business day, in order to be effective, rather than running things the way they really "are."
If you make his insights your own, you will learn about yourself and your organization. Eventually, you will reach your goals.
Unlike other books, this one does not contain a sustained argument, so it doesn't become dull. And, many of the quotes might be regarded as some of Drucker's most user-friendly. Plus, each quote is capped off with an "action item" by the editor, Maciarello, who does an admirable job in teasing out some of the implications of Drucker's writing.
P.S. This is the perfect gift to give an executive.
What you do with it is what counts.......2006-07-09
Howdy,
This is a good book and I recommend it for all new and seasoned leaders and managers. We can all benefit from the points made and use them in our own development.
Make the time to purchase it, read it, study it, and apply it. The book is not an end in itself, only a good beginning. What you do with it is what counts.
If you enjoy Drucker, this is an absolute gem.......2006-04-25
I'm not sure how appreciative a person who has not read Peter Drucker's works could be of this gem. But for those who have, The Daily Drucker is a marvelous distillation and condensation of some of Druker's most penetrating insights from his many books and other works.
Drucker was, of course, the dean of management consultants, a man who clearly saw into the intricacies of marshalling and directing resources toward both commercial and social goals.
For those not familiar with Drucker, the one page digests provide an excellent, if out of context, introduction to his style.
Drucker was truly unique. He saw the past, present and future. His recent death was a loss, but fortunately his wisdom lives on in books like The Daily Drucker.
