"...Your Red Scarf Matches Your Eyes...".......2005-01-03
"Your Red Scarf Matches Your Eyes, You Close Your Cover Before Striking, and Loving You Has Made Me Bananas...." For the graphic artist or just fans of the visually arresting, there are some supurb images in this publication. Chronicle Books put out a book two or three years later called MATCHBOOK ART by Yosh Kashiwabara which is a nice compliment to this Abbeville Book. The Steel/Heimann book was published at a time when Abbeville was putting out a fun, funky series on American Pop culture - John Margolies MINATURE GOLF book, and the Dyer/Spark book FIT TO BE TIED: VINTAGE TIES OF THE FORTIES & EARLY FIFTIES, all of which are useful references for those in the (or into) arts/applied arts field/popular culture/or mid-century americana. The breakdown of categories in CLOSE COVER BEFORE STRIKING works well, the text (which is sparse) is very readable, and the page layout is attractive. I'd say that it would be a fine addtion to any bookshelf.

Any master stylist who encourages women to do less rather than more, to simplify their wardrobes, to carry only a few essential cosmetics, and to take catnaps in the summer has mastered the feminine psyche. Frédéric Fekkai, a native of Aix-en-Provence, is stylist to some of the world's most beautiful women (Liv Tyler, Brooke Shields, et al.), as well as the founder of eponymous salons in New York City and Beverly Hills and creator of a line of hair- and skin-care products, fragrances, and accessories. He understands that many American women are frustrated by unpretty trendiness and conflicting advice about glamour, that they want a simpler, more timeless approach to finding their own elegance. "Style," Fekkai writes, "is not about age, or height, or weight--it's about a sense of ease, a sense of dignity, and a sense of individuality shining through."
Drawing largely on the effortless allure of the women of Aix, Fekkai's foundation for A Year of Style is a month-by-month guide to simple beauty, with themes like "Energize" in February and "Romance" in June. Fekkai dabs in seasonal snippets: how to wear "sexy accessories" in May, how to choose toenail polish in July, how to relax while getting dressed for a holiday gala in December. His touches of beauty advice cover all the basics: the differences among hair spray, gel, and mousse; the best way to apply concealer; the perfect home blow-dry for a finished salon look. Daily sidebars add a whimsical tone--send vintage postcards, buy brightly colored toothbrushes, rent a sporty red convertible for the weekend--as well as beauty and style tips.
A Year of Style is both cool (you'll learn how to sip a citron presse) and refreshingly down-to-earth ("I have seen women subject themselves to too-often-repeated peels. Their skin becomes so shiny, they look shrink-wrapped.") Needless to say, this is a flawlessly designed book, from the typography and layout to the hundreds of photographs--chic, natural, and elegant--that perfectly showcase Fekkai's style. It's a book that's hard to put down, because it's as much about personal style and sophistication as it is about clothes and hair. Perhaps more than that, it's spirited, accessible, and just plain fun. --Rebecca Taylor
Book Description
Why has Frédéric Fekkai become one of the most sought after stylists in the world? It's not only his subtly sexy and carefree haircuts; his devoted clients have come to treasure his unerring advice on everything from the perfect handbag to menus for entertaining as much as his skill with scissors. Now every woman can realize Frédéric Fekkai's vision of complete beauty with this unique handbook, a guide to achieving a more simple, natural, and chic lifestyle every single day.
Unlike any other beauty or style guide,
Frédéric Fekkai A Year of Style acknowledges that a woman's look is constantly changing with the season, with fashions, and as her own lifestyle evolves.
Frédéric Fekkai A Year of Style works like a daybook, offering twelve chapters packed with advice for living life more beautifully -- plus a special style note for each day of the year. Each chapter explores the beauty priorities for a different month, whether it's making a fresh start in January, reinvigorating the body and mind in April, or celebrating the holiday season in December. June offers insights on bridal beauty and grooming for men, while September looks at the best cuts for kids and cultivating a sophisticated yet natural career look. Throughout, you'll discover sections on such beauty essentials as choosing the perfect pair of sunglasses and trimming bangs between salon visits. And because Frédéric believes style applies to every aspect of your life, there are also tips on packing for a tropical getaway, establishing a rewarding exercise routine, and choosing the perfect holiday gift.
Frédéric Fekkai knows style is more than what a women gets at the makeup counter or in a salon; it's the small choices she makes each day, from which lipstick color to wear to how she holds her handbag. In
Frédéric Fekkai A Year of Style, he offers a head-to-toe guide to achieving the look he's renowned for: effortless elegance throughout the seasons.

smart put together book.......2007-06-17
Small tid bits of information on a daily basis. Love how it is broken down by months and days. Simple advice. Glad I own this book.
The Most Beautiful Beauty Book!.......2007-05-16
This book is absolutely beautiful, both the pictures and the text are lovely, making it a great coffee table book. It is also filled with wonderful advice on beauty and life. I love all of Frederic Fekkai's products and was very impressed that he does not use this book to advertise his products, like so many of the beauty books out there. I have read a lot of beauty books and this is by far my favorite!
Very useful book.......2006-09-25
I liked this book a lot. It has many good beauty tips and a great ambiance with beautiful pictures. Frankly though, at times, I found Frederic a little stuffy and ridged for my taste. Also, as another reader here mentioned, some of the suggestions might be a little impractical for someone who can't afford pedicures and facials every week. Overall, I think it's a good investment and I would totally reccomend it for anyone who wants a beauty and style makeover and who wants good, basic beauty information. I think my mom would love this book!
Basically my Bible.......2006-05-05
this is the best style/beauty/life book ive ever seen. its my life manual. When you read it, it just makes you want to live a simple, stylish, delicious life. not only does it give great beauty/style tips, but its also a great lifestyle book. i love its recipes, its tips for being a great host or hostess, its gift giving tips, it encourages you to write letters instead of email. he also has a little tip for each day of the year. one of my favorites is to paint at least one wall in your room a great red color, becuase red makes you feel more beautiful when you wake up. i plan on painting one wall in my room red. One part i frequently read is the part about taking a trip in april, he talks about going to St. Barths, i think it was. just hearing him talk about what to pack and what to do makes me want to go on a vacation to cleanse and relax the spirit. i read his tips on applying makeup, figured out that i was applying cocnealer wrong, started using his tips and saw much more flawless looking makeup. every single one of his tips is amazing. he promotes simple, beautiful style with great accessories, and savory every little part of life. this book feels uncluttered, simple, stylish. i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend this book.
the book I've been looking for!.......2006-03-29
I have been looking for a style book that would teach me how to develop a clean, natural, chic style. In a world of over-the-top make-up, hair and nails, Fekkai has crafted a gorgeous book of daily tips on how to nuture the body and the soul. He gives wonderful instuctions on hair care (of course), make-up and color pallets, nail care as well as wonderful ideas for things that revive the soul. The lovely thing is that instead of loading up your make-up drawer with yet more things, you may find you will be simplifying your regime and looking great. Really, at the core of the book, is the essence of French joie-de-vivre!

Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale in the tradition of The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story. Neil Gaiman, creator of the darkly elegant Sandman comics and author of The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, tells the story of young Tristran Thorn and his adventures in the land of Faerie. One fateful night, Tristran promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the Wall that stands between their rural English town (called, appropriately, Wall) and the Faerie realm. No one ever ventures beyond the Wall except to attend an enchanted flea market that is held every nine years (and during which, unbeknownst to him, Tristran was conceived). But Tristran bravely sets out to fetch the fallen star and thus win the hand of his love. His adventures in the magical land will keep you turning pages as fast as you can--he and the star escape evil old witches, deadly clutching trees, goblin press-gangs, and the scheming sons of the dead Lord of Stormhold. The story is by turns thrillingly scary and very funny. You'll love goofy, earnest Tristran and the talking animals, gnomes, magic trees, and other irresistible denizens of Faerie that he encounters in his travels. Stardust is a perfect read-aloud book, a brand-new fairy tale you'll want to share with a kid, or maybe hoard for yourself. (If you read it to kids, watch out for a couple of spicy sex bits and one epithet.) --Therese Littleton

But Victoria is cold and distant -- as distant, in fact, as the star she and Tristran see fall from the sky on a crisp October evening. For the coveted prize of Victoria's hand, Tristran vows to retrieve the fallen star and deliver it to his beloved. It is an oath that sends the lovelorn swain into a world that is strange beyond imagining, a world populated by evil old witches, deadly clutching trees, and goblin press-gangs -- a world redeemed only by true love.

"Special e-book feature: ""Writing and the Imagination,"" a speech by Neil Gaiman. In the sleepy English countryside at the dawn of the Victorian Era, life moves at a leisurely pace in the tiny town of Wall--a secluded hamlet so named for an imposing stone barrier that surrounds a fertile grassland. Armed sentries guard the sole gap in the bulwark to keep the inquisitive from wandering through, relaxing their vigil only once every nine years, when a market fair unlike any other in the world of men comes to the meadow. Here in Wall, young Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to beautiful Victoria Forester. But Victoria is cold and distant--as distant, in fact, as the star she and Tristran see fall from the sky on a crisp October evening. For the coveted prize of Victoria's hand, Tristran vows to retrieve the fallen star and deliver it to his beloved. It is an oath that sends the lovelorn swain over the ancient wall, and propels him into a world that is strange beyond imagining. But Tristran is not the only one seeking the heavenly jewel. There are those for whom it promises youth and beauty, the key to a kingdom, and the rejuvenation of dark, dormant magics. And a lad compelled by love will have to keep his wits about him to succeed and survive in this secret place where fallen stars come in many guises--and where quests have a way of branching off in unexpected directions, even turning back upon themselves in space and in time. Neil Gaiman works his unique literary magic in new and dazzling ways in Stardust, a novel that will shine in the heart and memory far beyond the turning of its final page. "

A sweet fairy tale.......2007-09-30
Pretty good book. I like the depth that it goes into on some areas, but the ending is quite odd. There is a definite difference between the movie and the book, but both are worth your time. The pictures are beautiful and it is just a pleasure to have such an enchanting small world to escape into. I recommend this book to anyone who has a heart for a world that doesn't rely on reason.
Great read!.......2007-09-27
I bought this after seeing and loving the movie. I pored through it in about a day! While different from the movie in a lot of ways, I found the book to be just as good and interesting. This is a great read, and totally worth, buying and keeping.
STAR DUST.......2007-09-25
IT WAS A GOOD BOOK. IT'S DEFFENETLY A FAIRY TALE. A FAIR TALE FOR ADULTS MIND YOU. IT WAS SMALL AND EASY TO READ. VERY INTERESTING CONCEPT FOR A BOOK. THE ILLASTATIONS THAT WERE INCLUDED WERE VERY COOL. I'M DEFFENETLY GLAD I READ IT, BUT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BETTER IF I JUST RENTED IT FROM THE LIBARY. I DON'T THINK IT WILL ADD MUCH TO MY BOOK COLLECTION. ALL IN ALL I GIVE IT THREE STARS OUT OF FIVE.
Stardust.......2007-09-20
This item was shipped in excellent time and was in the exact condition specified by the seller.
Horrible Book.......2007-09-20
When I finished reading this book, I felt that I had wasted a few hours of my life. The characters are not developed at all. The story barely exists. There are so many positive reviews of this book that this will probably not affect anyone's decision, but I like virtually any good fantasy story. This book just does not have a story or interesting characters.

The Usual Gang of Idiots Needs Some Help from the Design Department.......2006-05-13
As a devoted MAD reader, I immediately purchased this volume when I saw it was available. I have fond memories of the MAD ad satires of my youth, and a cumulative look at this grand tradition proved to be irresistible.
MADVERTISING does offer a very enjoyable retrospective at my chuckles of yesteryear, as well as material that preceded and followed my subscription days. Naturally, the key to enjoying many of these ad satires is the witty ad copy that guys like Nick Meglin and Dick DeBartolo came up with. But despite the generous size of this book, time and again I was thwarted in my attempt to actually READ their lampoons. That's because the ads are sometimes reproduced herein at a fraction of their original size, reducing their words to micro-fonts. Dang it!
But this book does allow us to give a "hats off" to some of the magazine's illustrators and designers. Bob Clarke and (Frank) Kelly Freas in particular created artwork for MAD that was genuinely superior to the art accompanying the "real" ads of their day. In this regard, MADVERTISING does a good job reproducing their extremely clever visuals.

An educational goldmine and a barrel of laughs.......2004-07-02
One afternoon when I was about 12, I found this book while looking for something to read while my parents visited with their friends. I've never put it down since! Naturally, I don't mean I carry the physical book around. I carry the *ideas* into day-to-day living.
"She must be reviewing some other book!" you say. "Isn't this MAD Magazine we're talking about?"
Yes, and the founder of MAD always was a big promoter of teaching readers a little healthy skepticism. The book is a laugh from end to end, but an educational laugh at that. The writers take you through every kind of advertising trick: selling the B volume of the encyclopedia with the title, "Bikes, Babes and Barbiturates!" Getting you to buy detergent to get a free towel (*inside* the box, where the detergent should have been). Offering coupons while raising prices. It's all here, in a gem of a book that hasn't lost any of its punch in 30 years.

Julie Andrews Sings Her Favorite Songs

In this satisfying, straight-ahead biography of the star of My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and The Sound of Music, Robert Windeler walks a fine line between adulation and gossip. While his admiration for the former singing sensation shines through the text, he grapples earnestly with her parents' alcoholism, her extramarital affair, and the long stretches in her career without a Broadway or Hollywood hit. What emerges is a multidimensional portrait of a former British child star who lost her way in early success and found herself--and an interesting new toughness--through some midlife failures, which lead to her 1995 Broadway comeback in Victor/Victoria and her defiance of the Tony Awards. There's much more in Andrews of the scrappy survivor Victoria Grant (of Victor/Victoria) than any magical nanny.

Couldn't put it down. - Diane.......2005-09-20
A great book with lovely pictures. I just couldn't put it down.
The writer obviously knew her well and shared her amazing story. It was witty, sad and yet it often made you smile. She's also a gutsy lady with a gentle kind nature and very, very talented. Recomend this to anyone..
Long-winded and overheard.......2005-08-24
Julie's a great actor, but this bio isn't as interesting as its subject. An editor is needed for Mr. Windeler's overdrawn overdone prose.
rawther opiniated, yet still delightful.......2003-11-26
What's with the cover picture? I mean, I love Victor/Victoria, but Julie is a beautiful woman... why did he choose this picture? Also, there were times in the book where Windeler's personal opinion was a little offensive to me. I suppose that is alright, because he is allowed his opinion, but it seemed to me like he was bashing the movie "Star!", which happens to be one of my favorites. Other than the difference in opinion that occurred occasionally between the reader and the author... this book was a delightful, yet 'real' holiday about Julie Andrews. It's loaded with anecdotes and great accounts of 'The Adventures of Julie and Carol (Burnett)' (as I call them). Over all, this is a good read for the Julie Fanatic, just keep in mind that you don't always have to agree with what this biographer has to say . ;)
A Woman of Wonders.......2002-03-27
This book about Julie Andrews is extremely interesting. Julie has had many inspiring experiences in her life and continues today to have many more. This book explains how she became what she is today. Also, this book tells the reader many interesting facts about Julie Andrews personal life and career.
GREAT BOOK!.......2002-01-28
Julie Andrews: A Life on Stage and Screen is a great read and I have to say that I found it rather informative. Aside from a few spelling and grammatical errors, it was a good book. Any serious Julie fan should read this!

Book Description
"My history of gambling really began before I was born." So opens Bill Lee's self-told story of gambling addiction, which is set in San Francisco's Chinatown and steeped in a culture where it is not unheard of for gamblers to lose their children in a bet. From wagering away his beloved baseball card collection in third grade to forfeiting everything he owned at blackjack tables in Las Vegas, every new and terrifying loss validated Lee's feelings of worthlessness. With gritty honesty and true humility, Lee describes what gambling addiction feels like and looks like from the inside. "Everything was a blur to me," Lee writes about a gambling jag that brought him financial ruin. "I was in such a reckless and self-destructive frame of mind that I would have bet my life if required. In a way, that's what I was doing. I was that far gone from reality." In the end, however, "Born to Lose" is a memoir of hope as Lee reveals how recovery from his gambling addiction has been possible through the Twelve Step program.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-20
I bought this book because I am concerned for a friend of mine who is a compulsive gambler. I wanted to figure out how he thinks, what drives him to do what he does. This book explained all that and much more. It explained to me that gambling is an addiction/disease that is difficult to overcome by yourself. The gambler needs help but often will not seek it out. GA information is in the book also as are the 12 steps. Bill Lee and my friend are have the same personality. I really learned alot about my freind and I hope someday he will seek out the information in this book for himself.
A remarkable book.......2007-09-16
I came across this book while doing research on compulsive gambling. I bought the book in hopes that I would have a better understanding of the addiction, and since the author himself is a recovering addict it would give me some insight on how to deal with my loved one who is suffering from the same problem. After reading Bill Lee's "Born to Lose", I knew that there is hope still and that one can actually overcome an addiction and not feel like it's the end of the world. What I loved most about the book was that he was so open and honest. I began to realize the similarities that Bill and my friend had which gave me a better understanding on how to deal with this situation, but also assured me that with support and proper treatment my friend would battle his addiction one day. His story gives you an idea of what actually runs through a gambler's mind and how their thought process works. This for me was one of the most helpful things I learned.
I strongly recommend that not only compulsive gamblers should read this book but also for those who have loved ones who suffer from this illness. If you are one of those people who can't even begin to comprehend why compulsive gamblers do what they do, than this also is a book for you to read. Being ignorant about this addiction will never help your loved one get back on track.
I thank you Mr. Lee for opening up your life to the public. More over I
thank you for your honesty, because I do not think there are many books like this that give the true reality of what this addiction can do to addicts themselves and their families.
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-02-25
This is such an interesting book! I was looking for a book on gambling addictions, picked up this book, and finished it in 2 days. Bill tells his story without any self-pity or self-glorification.
As a compulsive gambler myself who has been clean for a year and 3 years before that, it gave me perspective on how insidious this addiction can be. A must read for anyone who suspects they might be a compulsive gambler.
A Book About a Gambling Survivor!!!.......2005-07-01
+++++
This book, by author, writer, and entrepreneur Bill Lee, tells the story of his gambling addiction, "which spans more than forty years and includes [his] fifteen-year involvement with Gamblers Anonymous."
Lee's history of gambling (blackjack and the stock market were his favorite games), believe it or not, began "before [he] was born." Then we are told how gambling overtook his life and how winning validated his self-worth. By the time he became an adult, Lee was "obsessed with money." However, Lee recognized he had a serious problem and was able to travel the very bumpy road to recovery through the practice of a Twelve Step program.
This book is divided into two parts. Part one entitled "My drug of choice" consists of eleven chapters. Part two entitled "The road to recovery" consists of seven chapters. There is also an epilogue along with two appendices.
This book is very easy to read. Lee includes psychological terms in his main narrative and defines everything quite well so you're never lost. His writing style is straight forward and to the point.
In my opinion, the strongest thing about this book is Lee's complete honesty. He tells the reader everything (and I mean everything) about what went on during this turbulent time of his life. The result for me is that I found myself rooting for him.
Finally, whom is this book meant for? I would say anybody who is interested in knowing about addictions (like myself). It also should be of benefit to those patients and families who are struggling with gambling problems as well as the therapists who treat them.
In conclusion, this is a fascinating book that details the life of a gambling addict and how he gradually overcame his demons. It is a must-read for those who don't want to be sucked into the miserable life of gambling!!
(first published 2005; preface; acknowledgements; 2 parts or 18 chapters with epilogue; main narrative 270 pages; 2 appendices)

Excellent.......2005-04-27
This memoir about a man and his addiction to gambling is simply riveting.
Lee takes us back to his childhood and details for us the beginning of what would be the fight of his life.
While extremely scary, it is good for all of us to see how easily we can fall into addiction (of any kind) trying to simply live our daily lives.
Lee does an excellent job of showing us this, while his writing style is tight and to the point.
I found myself rooting for him and admiring his dedication to his 12 step program. I do, however, wonder about his knowledge of the Traditions which talk about anonymity in the media and the press. I am pretty sure having your pictures and full name on the cover of the book may be a breach of anonymity.
Still, I appreciate his total honesty. We need more books like this one.

Good practical info.......2007-09-10
It's no wonder this book is in its 5 edition. The info is practical with good examples and explanations of the terms and processes involved in Real Estate Investing. I'm living in Ireland and most of the information and techniques will work here. We just have high stamp duty which adds up to 9% to the cost of property.
This book is well worth the investment!
Excellent Book!.......2007-09-06
After you get past the author's stock market rant, this book is a great resource. It explains the relevent formulas for evaluation of real estate investments, how to obtain the data, and how to compare alternate investments. I have found it takes these aspects of investment a bit further than many of the other real estate books I have purchased. Skipping the stocks rant, I think this is the best book on the subject I have read.
Investing in Real Estate Provides Depth and Insight.......2007-08-05
There is a good reason why five editions of this book have been published. It covers the major topics that most real estate investors need to know about their profession. Many books cover the same ground, but few do it with such depth and insight.
One motivation that I had in when I originally bought this book was to get a clearer understanding of commonly used real estate terms such as Net Operating Income (NOI), Capitalization Rate (R), Value (V), Return on Investment (ROI) and Gross Rent Multiplier( GRM). The book does a good job of both describing these terms, as well as providing numerous example of their use.
As an investor who focuses on fix-up houses, I think the section on buying fix-up houses hits the nail on the head. I like how the authors describe how easy it is to overlook a the potential in a fix-up house, in saying, "Many buyers reject properties too quickly. They walk in , do a quick-take with a pass-through tour, and then say something like, 'Let's get out of here. It's way too dark, the rooms are too small, and ... it has awful burnt-orange shag carpeting in the bedrooms... anyone would be crazy to buy that house. Yes, anyone would be crazy to buy that house - unless, of course, they could buy it at a steep discount , rehab, redecorate and resell it, or perhaps, if in finding a discounted fixer they were able to buy property in a higher-priced neighborhood they could other wise not have afforded. Then these buyers wouldn't be called crazy. They'd be called smart."
Other books that I have found particularly useful are: "How We Made A Million Dollars Recycling Great Old Houses" by Sam Weir and Mary Weir; "Profits in Buying and Renovating Homes" by Lawrence Dworin; and, "Building Wealth One House at a Time: Making it Big on Little Deals" by John W. Schaub.
Terry Sprouse - author of the forthcoming book, "Fix 'em Up, Rent 'em Out: How to Start Your Own House Fix-up and Rental Business in Your Spare Time."
Great resource for newbies.......2007-08-02
This book is easy to read and has great advice and tips. The authors have organized the principles of real estate in a way I could easily understand and encompass.
Another great book I found - Bubble Proof: Real Estate Strategies that Work in any Market by Tonja Demoff has great strategies and a different spin on real estate.
Well written and thorough. Worth every penny. .......2007-07-11
If you know nothing about real estate, this is the book for you. I have read tons of books about real estate. Alot of them are mediocre at best. This one, however, gives you good sound practices in language you can understand!
Buy it new, buy it used - but if you are even pondering investing in real estate, make sure you buy it!
