I got my copy of "Digesting the Child Within" as a gift and so thoroughly enjoyed it that I've recommended it to all my family and friends. The satirical, dysfunctional and downright literal but offbeat depictions of modern life appeal to you in the same vein that Gary Larson, Bill Waterson, John McPherson (of "Close to Home" comic strip)and Berke Breathed's works do. I also appreciated the autobiographical section neatly tucked in at the end of the book; it explained where John Callahan is coming from in case you are not familiar with him. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys offbeat, intelligent, frank humor and cartoons. Your day will really be lightened by flipping through this book on occasion, so feel free to find a copy & keep it close at hand throughout this bumpy roadtrip called life.

I loved every page! This is not one you want to leave around for the kids to read, unless they're over thirty. A definite must-read

Book Description

Nancy MacDonell Smith explores the origins, meaning, and remarkable staying power of the ten staples of feminine fashion:
* the little black dress
* the white shirt
* the cashmere sweater
* blue jeans
* the suit
* high heels
* pearls
* lipstick
* sneakers
* the trench coat
Tracing the evolution of each item from inception to icon status, she reveals the history and social significance of each, from the black dress's associations with danger and death to the status implications of the classic white shirt. Incorporating sources from history, literature, magazines, and cinema, as well as her own witty anecdotes, Smith has created an engaging, informative guide to modern style.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, informative and surprising.......2005-10-26

While I would still qualify this as "light" reading, it's an intelligent read about a subject some have written off as too inconsequential and that others have elevated to deadly seriousness. This book strikes a nice balance, coming from the point of view that our clothing says a lot about us, whether we are conscious of it or not.

While I appreciated the author's writing style and observations (I burst out laughing when she described wannabe hip hop fans in pursuit of the perfect sneaker as foot fetishists), she didn't go out of her way to be too clever or witty (although she did quote quite a few people who arguably do, especially the designer- Manolo Blahnik?- who declares that it's all about extremities and the rest of the body is boring. Okay...) In the ten main chapters, the book provides a history of the evolution and a commentary on the social significance of each of the classic ten style items, almost all of which are interspersed with personalities who embodied the spirit of the item. (It should be noted that Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel made an appearance in almost every chapter. Where would modern fashion be without them?)

Some points that will stay with me: the seventies/early eighties trend towards natural and the cosmetics executive who bragged about her skill applying twelve different products to achieve the natural look; the evolution of the men's suit to embody the Greek (Greco-Roman) ideal of the perfect body; the foot fetishisms that seem to inform so many footwear designs (and a deplorable ad by Apostrophe involving fetishism and murder- remind me not to buy any of their shoes!).

While I couldn't argue with her choices, I found it odd that she did not include black boots or the perfect scarf in her list. That may have pushed her over the all-important number ten, but since she sort of cheated in her discussion of the white shirt (which refers to both the button down version and the T-shirt), I think she should have found a way. But that's a very minor complaint.

If you're interested in fashion history and modern dress, this will be an enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and familiar.......2004-02-03

It's hard to find good, lively fashion writing that's geared to the consumer -- not just to the elite insiders working in the fashion industry. This book fills a need for the everyday fashionista who loves to read intelligent copy about clothes, especially the classics already in her closet. The author knows her subject and her affection is contagious.

There's nothing much new here, but still, it's loads of fun to rehash. Reading these essays, I had a vague sense that I'd read some of the material in several other places by several other authors -- such is the familiarity of the Little Black Dress, for example. (Everyone wants to own the LBD and every fashion writer in America has written about it. Ditto the trench coat.)

But don't let that spoil the fun and romance of this delightfully fun read! It's a great little tribute to the classics, and deserves a place on your nightstand.

    Book Description

    The governor of Gaul has always been a “creative” accountant. Now he’s under investigation by Vexatius Sinusititis—or he was, until someone poisons the investigator. In order to heal Vexatius, Asterix and Obelix set off to locate a special flower that grows only in Helvetia.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Good Asterix adventure.......2007-07-15

    One of the finest Asterix books, this one has the unusual feature of having a Roman as one of the good guys. He is a tax collector (of all jobs) who is poisoned by a corrupt Governor, fond of embezzling Rome when not setting up decadent orgies. The ailing taxman, fearing for his life at the hand of the inept Roman doctors, call our indomitable Gauls. Panoramix realizes that in order to save him, he needs a particular flower that grows in the Alps for the antidote. So, Asterix and Obelix have to go to Helvetia (modern day Switzerland) in order to find said flower. As usual in Asterix books, national stereotypes as well as anachronisms abound: the Swiss are fanatical about cleanliness, they already dominate banking, they engage in yodeling, and so forth. It's a fun book, and the fact that Asterix and Obelix are willing to save a nominal enemy, highlights their noblesse.

    3 out of 5 stars One-trick pony, but at least it's a funny trick........2007-02-28

    Rene Goscinny, Asterix in Switzerland (Dargaud, 1970)

    A corrupt Roman official poisons a tax collector, and Getafix is called in to cure him (since the Roman doctors are unable to do anything). Getafix requires an Edelweiss blossom for the antidote, and thus sends Asterix and Obelix off to Switzerland to get it. Another of the books where Goscinny actually tries to fulfill the original idea of using the Asterix books to teach something (geography always was Asterix and Obelix's best subject); it's quite fun in places, but the contrast of the slovenliness of the charges under the jurisdiction of the corrupt Roman and the orderliness of the Swiss tends to wear a little thin. ***

    4 out of 5 stars Magic Fondue?.......2007-01-16

    "Asterix in Switzerland" is the sixteenth Asterix comic, first published in France in 1970. It's a fairly good one, and I liked it.

    The Governor of Condatum loves his Roman orgies, and has been taking the taxes for the Roman Empire and putting them in his own savings. A Quaestor from Rome comes to investigate, and the Governor poisons him. Dying, the Quaestor sends for Getafix, who has a reputation for medicine out in Gaul. He, and his friends Asterix and Obelix come to visit him in bed. Getafix can heal the man, but he needs the Edelweiss flower, and the best specimens come from the mountains in Helvetia, so Asterix and Obelix are sent to find it...

    It's worth a look for Asterix fans.

    5 out of 5 stars Asterix in Switzerland.......2006-02-26

    Asterix comics are great historical fiction.
    Wonderful illustrations and well written.

    5 out of 5 stars Asterix and the Silver Star.......2002-06-23

    First published in French in 1970 as Astérix chez les Helvêtes,
    Asterix in Switzerland was first published in English in 1973.

    A visitor from Rome interrupts Varius Flavus, the Roman Governor of Condatum (Rennes), from one of his depraved and revolting orgies.
    Quaestor Vexatius Sinusitus has been sent by Julius Caesar, as a Treasurer for the Provinces, to audit the Governor's accounts.
    As Flavus has been rather freely crooking the accounts, he poisons the Quaestor to get him out the way.

    An ill Sinusitus secretly sends for the Getafix who is a famous healer, and Getafix of course takes with Asterix and Obelix, and our two heroes are sent to Helvetia (Switzerland) to fetch the one thing that can save his charge, the Silver Star (Edelweiss).
    Varius Flavus is desperate to ensure that the Quaestor is not saved and sends word to his friend, the equally corrupt Governor of Genava (Geneva) that Asterix and Obelix are to be stopped at all costs.

    Once more the author Goscinny writes a witty and satirical adventure, poking gentle fun at the customs of Switzerland, their punctuality and clocks, fondues and Swiss Cheese, yodeling and banks. We get to observe an ancient `International Conference of Tribal Chiefs', almost as useless and hypocritical as the United
    Nations of today and even get to meet the famous Michelin man when our friends stop off at a repair station to mend a broken wheel.
    Once more a fantastic classic, from the famous Goscinny and Uderzo.

        This is one of my favoirtes in the Asterix serries. In a rare case of helping a Roman, Gettafix is asked to aid a Roman investogator who has been poisoned by the corrupt officials he is auditing. To save his life Asterix must recover a tiny flower known only to grow in Helivita.

        The rest is a fun romp through Switzerland pushing all the steroetypes of banks and neutrality and above all cleanliness. This is a particular point of horror to the Romans who like dirty orgies. there are comments on cooking, medical health and depravity, just for good measure.

        Along the way potions are drunk, Romans as bashed and friends are made.

            Book Description

            Shrek (2001), an offbeat adventure featuring a big green ogre, his chatty sidekick Donkey, and the feisty Princess Fiona, turned the traditional fairy tale on its ear and helped to usher in a new era in computer animation, garnering the first Academy Award(r) for Best Animated Feature. Shrek 2, opening in May 2004, joins the inseparable trio on new comic adventures, advancing once again the art of 3-D computer animation.

            This lighthearted book chronicles the equally dramatic (and occasionally comic) story behind the making of the two movies. It features a trove of behind-the-scenes information and is jam-packed with illustrations-concept art, storyboards, character models, set designs, and stills. Author John Hopkins joins the filmmakers (directors, producers, animators, writers, production designers) as they describe the painstaking process of inventing and animating an imaginary world, and eavesdrops on the movies' main characters as they recount the trials and tribulations of a major production, the clash of egos, and the scenes that didn't work.

            With enough Shrek lore to satisfy the die-hard fan and the same off-kilter humor as the films themselves, this book is sure to have enormous appeal.

            Me encantó! Ideal para los fanáticos de las dos películas!
            Hermosas ilustraciones a todo color y muy buena información técnica y no tanto sobre cómo se hicieron las dos películas.

            5 out of 5 stars Sensational!.......2005-01-09

            This is a sensational book which covers the idea of Shrek, both movies Shrek 1 & 2 as well as behind the scenes stuff such as animation techniques and so forth. You will learn all sorts of interesting trivia such as the sequel was originally going to be an election for the throne with candidates such as Pinocchio's policies being about honesty. This is a very high quality book with nice paper making up the 173 pages, the makers haven't skimped on the quality at all, with heaps of illustrations and actual still frames from the movies it would make a sensational gift for any Shrek fan. You do want to make sure you have seen both movies first because the book does go extremely detailed into the plots of both, it is an excellent book, there's not really anything negative that could be said about it. It is a great book which will provide hours of enjoyment.

            3 out of 5 stars Worth the money, but a boring novel........2004-08-15

            I recieved this book as a birthday present. It's not a gift I regret recieving or reading, but I wouldn't spend that much money to buy it.

            PROS:
            -The pictures are gorgeous, all of my favorite moments are included
            -The sidebar conversations with characters are pretty funny
            -Easy navigation, side articles on interesting aspects of production

            CONS:
            -If this book had none of the above, it would be a really boring novel
            -Very few comments about anything beyond the first visualization and storyboard sessions.
            -Very few side stories, or funny anecdotes after the third chapter

            If you want to read a good movie book, read Lord of the Rings: Making of a Movie Trilogy... They have great stories from the directors, designers, and even lawyers. Very entertaining, well worth the time.

            This is a great book all about the rude humor filled animated movies from Dreamworks. It is necessary for any die-hard Shrek fan. This tells the story of how the movie got done, with little facts and full color photos from the movies. Although I'm not the biggest fan of the Shrek movies, this book is a great experience.

                1 out of 5 stars Wha???.......2002-12-11

                This is the worst novel Troy Denning has ever produced. I found Parched Sea to be entertaing enough that I read VD immediately after, and I was really disappointed. The main character, Ruha, was left of in Parhed Sea, having finally found her place in her tribe, in VD she has left her tribe to become a Harper with little to no explanation. The Shou are treated as though they had the language skills of a monkey. Were I Asian I would be very upset. Basically, this story could have had anyone in Ruha's place and it would have been the same tale.

                2 out of 5 stars missing somethng.......2000-09-01

                Though an easy read, as most FR books are, I found this one dry and not as interesting as the other Harper books. I found myself not realy careing about Rusha, or any of the other Characters. This may be do to the fact that the author introduced almost all of the characters and did not spend time developing them. The Dragonlinch Cypress and the ship Captian Fowler were the only desirably interesting Characters. I was dissapointed that the author did not use them to the potential. Lastly, the book overall was missing that key ingredient that makes a Harper book, a Harper Book.

                1 out of 5 stars Enough with the stereotypes already!.......1999-04-23

                I think if I were Oriental I would be offended by this book. It's not uncommon at all for FR authors to incorporate real world nationalities into their stories, and its usually done to good effect. But for some reason, when some authors write Oriental characters, they always have ridiculously poor English. It was so annoying, reading the dialogue of the Shou characters. All of them were wealthy, socially high ranking, international figures, so is it too unrealistic for the author to imagine that they could have mastered English better than a native-speaking 3-year old child. Come on already! As for the rest of the book, Ruha is about as interesting as cardboard and so was the plot.

                2 out of 5 stars boring stuff.......1998-10-21

                I found this book the worst of the entire harpers series. It took me at least four times as long as all the other books to finish. I actually had to force myself to read it to the end. I don't know if it's because of the Shou background, but this novel has nothing of the spirit a good FR book should have.

Grunting. they heave a sailcloth bundle into the hole. As it falls, a woman's hand dangles lifelessly from the folds. Who is the woman? 3 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling In The Streets.......2006-07-04

                "The Veiled Society" is an adventure that takes place in the D&D campaign world city of Specularum. In this urban setting the player characters find themselves mixed up in the political maneuverings of three of the city's noble families. One of these families secretly rules the "Veiled Society," a criminal/terror syndicate. This adventure features a number of preprogrammed encounters to keep the action moving.

                To help the DM have a greater idea of the boundaries of this urban environment, a small scale city map is provided. Additionally, 3-dimensional cardstock cut-outs of the city streets are included and intended to be used with 25 mm miniatures.

                B6 is a departure from the heretofore dungeon crawl formula: this is an adventure based around a plot. As such, these types of adventures are often limited in scope due to their plot, making them difficult to evolve smoothly into other storylines. Another difficulty is that the adventure hook is weak because it simply draws PCs into a storyline that they are not really a part of. A good DM will have to give his players a powerful motivation to become embroiled in this type of intrigue plot.

                        1 out of 5 stars Too basic; coverage can be found free online or in software.......2006-11-16

                        I was interested in the 2007 edition of this book (for tax year 2006) so I checked out the 2006 edition to see if it was any good. Glad I did that, because the stuff here is really just too basic. Like "business owner" opined, all the stuff is on IRS's website for free, and IRS does an admirable job keeping the topics organized just like this book. (Of course, reading a book still has numerous advantages over reading on a PC screen.) The book, to my dismay, lacks depth. I've done my own taxes for the last 16 or 17 years so nothing here is new for me. But even for a newbie, it's better to just use the IRS website which is more accurate and authoritative and up-to-date.

                        Besides, much of the information in this book is already in Lasser's Your Income Tax book, by the same author, a New York accountant called Weltman. Speaking of that book, if you are interested in saving on taxes, Jeff Schnepper's "Pay Zero Taxes" may be a better read.

                        In any case, you can find all the information here free online, or in the Help section of such low-cost tax prep software as TaxAct, TurboTax and TaxCut. TaxAct, in particular, gives you all that tax-related materials from Lasser, publisher of this small volume.

                        Book covers all of the basic deductions. The J.K Lasser's small business taxes book is much better. Everything in this book is available on the IRS website. In fact, much of this book seems to be just a rewrite of the standard IRS tax guides.
