Customer Reviews:
An erudite biography and commentary adds depth.......2002-03-21
Edmund C. Tarbell: Poet Of Domesticity by art historian and expert Laurene Buckley is an impressive and informative artbook showcasing the breathtaking work of Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938), a leading painter, teacher, and contributor to American Impressionism. Black-and-white and color representations of his most notable masterpieces fill the pages, while an erudite biography and commentary adds depth to the representations of skilled artwork. Edmund C. Tarbell: Poet Of Domesticity is very highly recommended for art history students as well as the non-specialist general reader having a passion for American Impressionism.

Plenty of content.......2007-04-24
This is much better book than the second In Style book. There are detailed tips on how to look for the best fit and what shapes flatter which body style. I was hoping to see more pictures of actual clothes so that's the reason for four stars.
In Style;Secrets of Style; The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day.......2007-04-02
I THOUGHT THE BOOK IS EXECELLENT AND IT IS WORTH THE PRICE.
Great Reference Book! .......2007-03-21
I have purchased other style books in the past, but this is one of the most useful because it breaks down body types and what looks best. My goal was the dress sexier and more feminine and this books has taught me what types of tops and bottoms to achieve that look. Now that I stick to the rules of thumb they provided, I am more comfortable with wearing whatever I pull out of my closet because I know it will fit great and be stylish.
Great book, everybody needs.......2007-01-12
This is the best book on clothing and style I've ever read. It's a must have! This book will save money for anyone following the advise given.
Not really a "style" book.......2006-09-30
This book is good for explaining which shapes of clothes look good on which figures, how clothes should fit, and how to tie a scarf. While that is helpful, I was expecting to learn some "secrets of style" as the title claims. Some tips on finding a style that corresponds with your personality or lifestyle, how to make it your own, shop for it, and keep it updated...that's what I thought I was buying. Too bad.

Best Political Cartoons.......2005-10-19
Since the day, I visited Cagle Cartoons Inc website through print cartoons appearing in Asian Age, I became a great fan of Daryl Cagle. I could not resist writing to Daryl for placing Political Cartoons on mjakbar.org but somehow I landed up signing up for Cagle Free Daily Newsletter with Cartoons. Hold Your Breadth! Daryl Cagle's Pro Cartoonist Index Page is Amazing to explore. But here, the Book 2006 is gonna be full of exciting 150 Cartoons, chosen by Daryl and his staff - humorous and sometimes sad look of the events. It will re-live memorable moments like the Michael Jackson trial, steroid and baseball, the rise of gas prices, Terri Shiavo, the Tsunami, and much more in this book that is sure to be a great gift for you or your favorite political junkie. Why I say this before a read of Cartoons 2006 is because I've gone through each and every Cartoon Newsletter of Cagle and heaven's bless, this syndicated 700 newspaper Cartoonist is a raging success with the Tsunami, M Jackson, Bird Flu, Bush, Where's Osama and earlier, the Keryy vs Bush, Ronald Reagan, Yasser Arafat, etc.
Political cartoons has always been an important American Art form. 2004 was an important year with the presidential campaign, the war in Iraq, and terror: terrorists attacked a Russian school, killing scores of children and killer hurricanes, Athens Olympics & so on like war, terror and politics - the 2005 book covers up all the 2004 happenings in almost 288 pages from a collection of 800 cartoons on site.
Cartoons are an art form that chronicles history and reflects the attitudes of the public with a depth that can't be achieved in words alone. The website is a state of art and the Books are great buys for Library reads and gifts especially when you want to say no words - Daryl Cagle's cartoons speak a lot! Great Must Picks!

Book Description
He conquered the known world. He united it for the first time with a common language. His military tactics are still being studied-and used-by today's warriors. He is considered the most courageous and heroic warrior in history. But (and more importantly): He was hot. His boyfriends were hotter. He could throw hissy fits that would take Liza Minelli's breath away. He traveled with an advance publicity team. He was so vain, if Preparation H had existed, his enemies would have rubbed it on his ego. He had fag hags hanging off him like laundry. We're approaching 2,350 years after his death and people are still fascinated by Alexander the Great. Even Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, the people who gave us language, math and philosophy, didn't have Oliver Stone making movies about them. All the great conquerors that followed Alexander tried to emulate him-Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Jeff Striker. Michael Alvear presents a most unusual biography of history's greatest warrior.
Michael Alvear is a syndicated columnist whose commentary has been heard on NPR. He is the author of Men Are Pigs, But We Love Bacon.
Customer Reviews:
A fun and interesting read........2005-09-23
Michael Alvear has givien us another biography of Alexander, and it's a fun read. I don't agree with everything he wrote, but I do think that one can get a feel for the great king's more fun side while reading this book.
All-in-all, it was a quick and fun read. The history is supported for the most part (although I tend to think he takes a dimmer view of Alexander than I would).
An excellent book!
History's most influential (...) man.......2005-07-14
I wish there were more books like "Alexander the Fabulous." Even though it's a mostly humorous account of the life of Alexander, it tells a lot more about what kind of person Alexander was than Oliver Stone's movie "Alexander." It's a fast, informative, fun book to read. My only complaint is that it was too short.
Fun reading!.......2004-12-19
Alexander the Fabulous is a tongue-in-cheek "history" of the great guy himself. The book reads like a gossip column, and is chocked full of "tell-alls", both real and imagined. Totally entertaining reading for those seeking a decidedly editorialized and glomourized "biography".
Fantastic! At last, history is made interesting and fun!.......2004-11-19
An excellent text to accompany the Oliver Stone movie, "Alexander," this book is astonishingly well-researched and written by Michael Alvear with assistance from Vicky Shecter, who is now working on a children's book about Alexander the Great.
If you laugh out loud at David Sedaris books, this book may remind you of what a serious ancient history book would be like if David Sedaris had written it. It is a laugh a minute. Yet, the basic facts provided are correct. This book just makes it FUN to learn a bit of history that most people (even in Greece!) know far too little about.
I am a public librarian, and have read at least 12 books on Alexander the Great in the past six months. What one inevitably finds when researching Alexander is that his life is hotly debated by many differing factions: Should he be called Macedonian or Greek? Should he be called bisexual or gay? Should he be hailed as a hero and liberator or condemned as a mass murderer? Was he buried in Alexandria or someplace else? Did he have a part in killing his father or not? You can forget about finding a book that makes EVERYONE happy, though the best overall book I have found is Robin Lane Fox's "Alexander the Great" published in 1986 by Penguin Books. I believe it stands head and shoulders over any other book on Alexander, and every public library MUST have that book. Oliver Stone chose Robin Lane Fox to be his historical consultant for the film "Alexander." I would avoid the new book by Paul Cartledge even though it is new; the Robin Lane Fox book simply covers so much more and does it so much better. Also, the account of Alexander's travels by Arrian is a must.
Every library needs sources on Alexander, however, for those who may not care to read the serious history texts. Mary Renault's "Persian Boy" is outstanding for fiction readers, and her other books on Alexander, especially "The Nature of Alexander," are also excellent. But for those who want to really have FUN as they learn their history, you just can't beat Michael Alvear's "Alexander the Fabulous."
Anyone who is terribly homophobic may not like this book, but then again, anyone who is terribly homophobic is not likely to be reading about Alexander the Great anyway. After Jesus Christ, Alexander may be the most influential human to ever live, and there should be as many books about his life in our libraries as possible. The fact that he was gay or bisexual should not be a reason for not providing a book about his extraordinary life.
Don't miss this great book! You will be ever so glad you found it!
Why oh why aren't other history books like this..........2004-11-05
Finally! Someone with a sense of humor tackles one of the most amazing characters in history. I actually laughed out loud in some spots. This is the first comic biography of Alexander the Great. Being a history buff myself I was impressed with the book's historical accuracy. Most people know Alexander conquered the known world. But most don't know he was so vain "his generals had to rub Preparation H on his ego," according to the authors. My favorite example was the shaving craze Alexander started. Back then almost all warriors had beards. Alexander rationalized his shaving as a combat advantage. Hey, if the enemy couldn't grab you by the beard he'd have a harder time killing you. Here's what the authors have to say: "Historians have waved their BS detector over Alexander's reason for shaving and can't decide if it was legitimate or just another example of his vanity. Let's just say there's a whole school of thought that says Alexander didn't like hair on his face for the same reason Narcissus didn't like ripples in the water-it got in the way of the view."
Reading how the authors send up Alexander's temper tantrums, his flair for the dramatic and his marathon drinking sessions is worth the price of the book alone. One warning: the humor is a bit on the crude side. But that's half the fun.
Book Description
“Camp,” Mae West told Playboy, “is the kinda comedy where they imitate me.” But what was West doing, if not camp itself? Guilty Pleasures puts women back into the history of camp, a story long confined to gay male practice. Emphasizing the distinctive roles women have played as producers and consumers of camp, Pamela Robertson links her subject to feminist discussions of gender parody, performance, and spectatorship. Her book offers a heady tour of social and cultural criticism at its most interesting, and American culture at its most flamboyant.
Robertson grounds her theoretical discussion of female performance and spectatorship in detailed studies of figures such as Mae West, Joan Crawford, and Madonna. She locates these figures in turn within a tradition of feminist camp—a female form of aestheticism related to masquerade and rooted in burlesque, parallel to but different from gay male camp. Through analyses of films from Gold Diggers of 1933 to Johnny Guitar, as well as video and television, Robertson shows how the gold digger is to feminist camp what the dandy is to gay male camp—its original personification and defining voice. Set against a backdrop of social history, her analysis demonstrates that feminist camp flourishes during periods of antifeminist backlash in America, and that it reflects a working-class sensibility particularly attuned to changing attitudes toward women’s work and sexuality.
Appealing to a wide range of scholars spanning the fields of film and mass culture, feminism, gay/lesbian/queer studies, and cultural studies, Guilty Pleasures will also attract an audience of general readers interested in camp and popular culture.
Customer Reviews:
Not So Guilty Pleasure.......2006-11-25
A Feminist Examination Of Mae West, November 24, 2006
Pamela Robertson's "Guilty Pleasures: Feminist Camp From Mae To Madonna," published in 1996 is a university press publication that examines Mae West's contributions to the Feminist Movement and evaluates her role as a female icon of the twentieth century. This treatment of West is a typical academic text with some research of textual sources, but with little or no interviews and featuring theory that is hit or miss.
When Mae West was asked why she never wrote an article supporting the Feminist Movement she reportably drawled, "They never asked me."

Book Description
Players who want to go on the attack will find here a complete, aggressive repertoire based on 1e4. Fifty-one model games-all recent and never before annotated in chess literature-form the guide's core, and show how to handle the broad range of attacking positions arising from the recommended lines. With the underlying theory so clearly explained, chess mavens will understand exactly why to place the pieces on certain squares in the given structure.
Customer Reviews:
Aggressive repertoire for white, but..........2005-09-03
First the good points: The suggested repertoire is "aggressive" and success often hangs on sharp attacking tactics; that's what the book's title promises and those of us who buy it are not misled. Other books have used "attacking" in the title and then gone on to suggest rather tame variations inside, so give Collins his due in choice of variations. Furthermore, the game collection is rather good, and Collins annotates very well.
However, there are some negatives: Collins' book is organized around the now so popular "complete games" model. This is great if you already know the first few moves of an opening and want to become familiar with typical middle game positions. Then you already know the possible transpositions and popular answers fro your opponent. When learing new variations, personally, I prefer the opening tree organization where all the options are mentioned as we progress move by move into the opening. That way I have confidence in my preparation and I don't have to do as much "bookkeeping" work myself.
In a book organized around complete games, it is very easy for the writer to omit moves for one side or the other (here for black), while very hard for the reader to realize these omissions. (by checking a database of games for example). It is also more difficult for the reader to keep track of transpositions without a lot of work (I put the games into ChessBase and create my own opening tree in that software, but I think that's the job of the writer).
I don't mind working on my game and on the opening, but a good author and editor takes this drudge work on instead of leaving it to us. Then we can work on understanding, planning, and tactical considerations.
So complere games make it easier to write the book but harder to use it.
Repertoire for the Club Player.......2005-07-17
This is a good repertoire book for the club player. Collins usually recommends main lines that are also played by the world's top players. However, in the Sicilian he recommends playing 2. c3, which has come somewhat out of fashion at GM level. He presents the repertoire by giving complete games and analysing sub-variations in this context. Collins is a very enthusiastic writer. Yet, when checking some variations I found that he did not mention several lines that black can choose and which may cause trouble for the inexperienced player. For example in the 2.c3 Sicilian he misses a variation where black can force queens off (which is probably why Bc4 is now usually being played before d4). Also some sidelines in the Scandinavian (with Nc6, not solid but very popular and dangerous at club level) and the Alekhine (4. ... Nb6) are missing. When I compare this book with Emms' repertoire book then Emms is more complete and "waterproof", although Collins' variations are more aggressive and most are probably better.
Still, this book is good especially for learning the Scotch opening, the Panov Attack and the Advance French as white. But you will need more material to really have a complete repertoire - therefore only three stars, although the quality is four to five stars.

Great Ideas!.......2007-03-12
Love this book! If you're in to modern storage solutions or want the best of the best products... this is your book! Great coffee table book.
Happy but not impressed!.......2007-01-20
Being a 28yr. old woman, who is not very domestic, I love the book and learned a lot. I would describe the book as a personal/household, "how-to" book. The book features checklists for grocery, kitchenwares, chores, home and auto maintenance and cleaning. It tells the best way to remove stains from everywhere, to do laundry, to decorate, to paint. And they give some quick/easy recipes. However, I don't think experienced moms and dads would be that impressed with most of the info!
the book is Real Simple - but don't let that deter you.......2005-12-23
This book reads extremely fast. The page layout is attractive (just like the magazine), but alas this arrangement includes a lot of white space. Many of the tips are too familiar, e.g., sprinkling lemon juice on your fruit salad to prevent browning, and some advice is applicable only to homeowners or parents (I am neither - yet).
Still, there is enough novel advice to make this volume worthwhile for a poor student who appreciates tips for organizing and entertaining. I recommend this for a housewarming gift.
note: book is hardcover.
A Book To Make Life Easier.......2005-11-10
I'm a fan of Real Simple magazine, so this book hit the spot for me. It gives you ideas for reusing items. Now I know what to do with the stack of dryer sheets that I'd been saving. There are inexpensive tips and lots of how-to advice. Some may sound familiar, but there's bound to be some you had not thought of before.
All kinds of tricks and tips from Real Simple Magazine.......2005-09-22
I like "Real Simple" magazine but I don't like saving the back issues. (I have enough clutter, believe me.) So the editors of this excellent magazine have compiled all kinds of tricks and ideas into this single volume. It's a lot of fun to read and has some very helpful stuff for keeping your home in order.
The chapters include:
1. Grooming
2. Getting Dressed
3. In the Kitchen
4. In the Office
5. Cleaning
6. Decorating
7. Entertaining
8. Celebrating
1. Grooming includes how to unclog your drain. I am going to go try this; my bathroom sink is not draining properly. Here, you dump a cup of baking soda down and add a gallon of boiling water..
Naturally, the grooming section is homemade recipes for face scrub, toothpaste (?) and fun ideas like freezing aloe vera gel for sunburn relief--if you KNOW you are just going to go get burnt, you might as well prepare.
2. Getting Dressed has hints on mending, washing dainty things,
3. In the Kitchen--not the best part of the book, I thought, some basic recipes and how to use a wine bottle as an emergency rolling pin.
4. In the Office; someone peeked in my desk drawer at work, because there is a suggestion for supplies like toothbrush and toothpast and a lint roller, plus some basic makeup. I have this. They didn't find the hair dryer and shampoo I keep in the office bathroom in case I get drenched or sweated out and have to do my hair over at work..hahah. Another suggestion, spare house keys! Good idea.
5. The cleaning section has a stain removal guide, probably worth the book for this alone.
6. Decorating, lots of tips, but most useful, how to paint a room.
7. The entertainment section has fun things like freezing berries to make colorful ice cubes for summer drinks, and how to buy for a cocktail party.
The book ends with all the marvelous things you can do with dental floss, aside from flossing between your teeth.
Good for the newly-wed or just-got-first apartment couple. This is a pretty volume that would make a welcome gift for just about anyone.
