Book Description
This book analyzes contemporary visual art produced in the context of conflict and trauma from a range of countries, including Colombia, Northern Ireland, South Africa, and Australia. It focuses on what makes visual language unique, arguing that the “affective” quality of art contributes to a new understanding of the experience of trauma and loss. By extending the concept of empathy, it also demonstrates how we might, through art, make connections with people in different parts of the world whose experiences differ from our own.
The book makes a distinct contribution to trauma studies, which has tended to concentrate on literary forms of expression. It also offers a sophisticated theoretical analysis of the operations of art, drawing on philosophers such as Gilles Deleuze, but setting this within a postcolonial framework.
Empathic Vision will appeal to anyone interested in the role of culture in post-September 11 global politics.

Aspiring Model.......2004-11-16
I am impressed with the amount of information this book gave. It really guides you step by step & made me realize that even though I'm short(5'2), I can still make it in beauty, print, petite & junior/teen modeling.
Basic advice.... little real information.........2004-10-03
This book had no real advice. Most of it was just common sense advice any person shold know. Seemed geared for 15 year old girls only.
Very little substance........2004-08-31
Essentially this book, with its large fonts and generous helpings of superfluous pictures, contained scant information about the modeling industry. The pages are just filled with very shallow and unsubstantiated statements such as, "Your agent will navigate your career, setting in motion a business and promotional plan geared to market fully your unique looks and talent", with no further elaboration. Take for example its chapter on "Ethinic Modeling". It glazes over the subject on how its such a promising area of the industry and tops it off with two short interviews with 2 female black models - 7 pages in all, with plenty of pictures might I add. The interviews themselves were just as disappointing with superficial statements of little substance that only glamorizes the modelling industry. Above all, the author insults the reader's intelligence by shamelessly pitching the Wilhelmina modeling agency almost every other page. In fact, the entire book's message boils down to - try to sign up with an model agency (no less the Wilhelmina) and expect a 20% commission rate. Those who have rated this book 5 stars are obviously the author or Wilhemlmina employees.
this is why models have management.......2004-05-10
Like many models getting started in the business, I didn't know which way to turn. The hardest part is to qualify clients and to only work with those that will keep the image of you that you would like to promote in the market place. This book really doesn't outline this aspect of the industry. Good management is what got me a blossoming career in this business. Thanks to Digital White Boy Management, http://www.digitalwhiteboy.com , I've made it in this industry.
Very outdated.......2004-03-17
I was not impressed with the lack of real information. I could have gotten more information by talking to a "working model" for 10 min. The fact that Wilhelmina has been a part of soo many modeling scams, makes me think that this "advice" is off base too. All fluff , and no substance.
Product Description
THE WORLDS LARGEST talent and model scouting company, led by celebrity boy-band promoter Lou Pearlman, recruited over 150,000 members across America from 2000 to 2003. Based in Orlando, Florida, this enterprise operated under many names: Studio 58 Models; WHY Models; eFashionShow.com; emodel.com; Options Talent; Trans Continental Talent; Wilhelmina Scouting Network; and Web Style Network.
It charged upfront fees ranging from $395 to $995 to put an aspiring models picture on their website, a service purportedly used by 1000 modeling agencies seeking new talent. You could be discovered, their army of talent scouts pitched. Become a model! You have the look!
Extremely controversial, subject to many local news reports, it also received national attention in Jane, Newsweek, and on Dateline NBC. More than 2000 complaints were filed with the Florida Attorney Generals Office, many with signed and notarized affidavits from consumers who felt they had been scammed. An investigation, led by Assistant Attorney General Jacqueline Dowd, was opened in July 2002.
Everyone expected Attorney General Charlie Crist to act. But he didnt. Why not? Using previously secret documents obtained through public records requests, Under Investigation takes you inside the Florida Attorney Generals Office to see how the two-year investigation unfolded, and then was ultimately shut down under suspicious circumstances.
Customer Reviews:
Justice Denied.......2007-08-24
In the late 1990s I stumbled across the web pages of the Wilhelmina Scouting Network. I could not believe that the world renowned modeling agency would cheapen their brand on such a low-grade idea brand. It turns out I was right. They never had.
I did not realize that until I read Les Henderson's expose Under Investigation. It is the tale of the largest modeling scam in America and secret political corruption at the Florida Attorney General's Office.
It is the story of models who paid $995 to pursue their dream, only to discover they were scammed. It is the story of more than 2,000 consumers who filed complaints at the Florida Attorney General's Office expecting state action. Instead they got nothing.
I have always been fascinated with great sales people who can only find scams to pursue. The legal road to riches is within their grasp. Instead they dedicate themselves to lives of deceit. Henderson is a skilled investigative journalist of the old school. He spares no one writing this book.
Thoroughly researched and aggressive told, this tale leaves one wondering why we place any faith at all in our government to protect us from ourselves.
Encyclopedic and yet the tip of the iceburg.......2007-08-14
Mr. Henderson was definitely on to something huge here, and provides tons of evidence to show that fraud was taking place with the tacit blessing of then Attorney General and now Governor Charlie Crist. Henderson probably wasn't even aware that the wheels were already in motion to uncover the largest Ponzi scheme and bank fraud case the US has every seen.
Recently boy-band Svengali Lou Pearlman (featured prominently in this book) was taken into Federal custody and has been indicted for bank fraud. Simultaneously, civil suits and forced bankruptcy proceedings are taking place. Transcontinental Talent (aka Wilhelmina, Options Talent, eModel, Studio 58 and others) is one of the businesses alleged to have been used to move and launder money for Pearlman's fake investment scheme estimated to have stolen half a billion dollars.
Lawsuits allege that Crist knew this was going on, and allowed it to happen. Certainly he received campaign contributions and special favors from Pearlman and his companies.
Mr. Henderson is to be commended for his simply amazing depth of research, getting his hands on documents the state of Florida certainly wouldn't want you to see. Unfortunately, we will probably never see a prominent republican like Crist prosecuted for virtually giving Pearlman the green light to steal.
For those who will never see justice..........2007-03-15
As someone who was conned by the 'businessmen' mentioned in this book, I have to recommend it to anyone else who found themselves unknowingly caught up in this scam.
Whether you were (like me) a talent scout, an aspiring model, a parent of a child who was told that your kid has model ability, a vendor, a franchise owner, a landlord, whatever... we were all duped and none of us will ever see a penny of what we put into this company.
For me, there's a certain amount of closure that this book brought to me. It made me realize that no, I wasn't dumb to get caught up in this, they were just THAT GOOD at the game. And all of the things that I thought were shady, actually were. And that this whole thing was a giant, manufactured LIE of a business.
Yes, it's very detailed. And it's history starts long before the WSN scam. But, the background helps to paint the picture of what was to come. And though the details can get tedious, it's the details that really made this business able to thrive, despite all of our government regulation of business in this country.
It disappoints me that this book couldn't have had a happy ending, but I already knew that. But i'm glad to see that the WSN scam didn't just fade away in some people's minds.
THREE CHEERS & A 21-GUN SALUTE! INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING LIVES.......2007-03-09
Long gone are the days of World War II when real blood-and-guts investigative reporting existed right alongside the real-thing horrors of war. It not only prevailed but shined. Why have the methods of these journalistic giants disappeared as an art form? Who knows? Today, reporters wait for "official" handouts: spokespeople to clue them in; they wait to compare press releases from the news sources themselves. And, they compare rumors they hear with other reporters over lunch, and drinks in bars, before preparing their own pieces. The true investigative reporter--with the exception of a couple each at the Wall Street Journal and Investors Business Daily--is as long gone as the days of that world-wide near-Armageddon two-thirds of a century past.
Until now, that is. Les Henderson's Under Investigation: Attorney General, State of Florida, is a genuine throwback to those days of yore. In this rock-solid compendium of long-running fraudulent antics at the highest level, he has stripped bare the foundation, the motives, the methods, and every other means of flim-flammery and hanky-panky practiced by a giant of the model talent agency business in Florida. Not only is the operation itself painstakingly pieced together, from skeleton to full flesh, for all to see, but the State of Florida's political side is exposed as well. Acquiescence and complicity are boldly spelled out.
Buried in the bowels of the book, is perhaps the best example of Henderson's spellbinding wordcraft, his description of a disbarred attorney's involvement in the womb of the operation as well as the political aspects of it. Read it and see. His prose is not only revealing, captivating, but it flows like the cool waters of a high mountain stream.
Overall, Les Henderson's Under Investigation: Attorney General, State of Florida, affords a front row seat for a thorough look at dysfunctional living, at its highest-off-the-hog end of the lifestyle spectrum.
All at the expense of others, this is a scam to be thoroughly understood. And, thoughtfully contemplated.
Too Detailed.......2006-11-24
Mr. Henderson is passionate about exposing the significant fraud of various model scout companies as well as the attorney general's office for their sudden decision to not prosecute after a significant investigation time. Without question he is correct that there was significant fraud and something wrong with the investigation. Unfortunately, the book reads very slowly with repetitive references to many of the same frauds and connections between the many model scout companies.
Mr. Henderson is correct but connecting this into a compelling book is another matter. A 450 page book prior to footnotes on the subject of a consumer fraud becomes tedious. Therefore I cannot recommend this book even though his thesis and passion are exceptional.
Book Description
"Dog-Eared" is exactly what this latest collection from cartoonist Patrick McDonnell is destined to become. The brilliant assortment of simple-yet-complex strips will have readers turning its pages again and again, eager to revisit the charm, truth, and humor found within.McDonnell's strip, syndicated in more than 500 Sunday and daily newspapers throughout the world, highlights the adventures of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat, best buddies who regularly come in contact with Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, Guard Dog, and Crabby-as well as an assortment of whimsically rendered humans. This cast is capable of endless antics, interspersed with poignant views on both the animal and human condition. And whether they're raiding garbage cans or basking in full-frontal belly rubs, Mooch and Earl always have a comment to clinch the scene.Mutts is the kind of strip that comic readers find irresistible. "Dog-Eared" is the same kind of collection. One strip leads to another, and before you know it you've turned page after dog-eared page to satisfy a growing Mutts addiction.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent as usual!.......2004-11-16
Mutts is my favorite comic strip. McDonnell has an amazing gift for drawing and composition that is so simple and yet so expressive. If you are not familiar with the Mutts cast of characters, you may want to start with an earlier anthology (Dog-Eared is the 9th) or visit muttscomics.com to get the rundown on all the characters. The principal characters of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat will be familiar to any dog or cat owner. The humor is innocent and refreshing. The "to-do" lists and New Year's Resolution strips in this issue are great, and of course, Earl's and Mooch's annual attempt to hibernate through the winter is hilarious.
I love Mutts.......2004-09-27
McDonnel is a comic strip genius, in my opinion. His artistic talent combined with his wit and wisdom make for fun reading. One thing I particularly like about this Mutts collection is the wisdom of the Shphinx strips. I would suggest, though, that you start with the first collection of strips so you can get the full story behind Earl and Mooch and all their friends and family.

Book Description
The world's most innovative new directors can't be found in Hollywood.
In the medium of film, the most important years of a filmmaker's life are in the beginning, when young directors can explore and expand their artistic visions and styles without the constraints of studio or marketplace demands. Such raw artistry, though fascinating, rarely reaches the public eye-until now. Chamberlain Bros. has gathered works from the premier film programs around the country and world from some of the hottest young directors, all of which are featured in this DVD collection. The accompanying book tells the story of each film's director through commentary and in-depth interviews, exploring individual approaches, and offering survival tips for the movie set and the classroom. Introduced by legendary independent filmmaker Roger Corman, here's a glimpse into the future of the moving image, a film festival no true cinemaphile can afford to miss.
Customer Reviews:
Wow. Eye-opening........2005-04-18
Worth reading to view another perspective of a film festival. Written like a documentary with interviews from participants in the festival. Good for other student filmmakers and anyone who wants to become a filmmaker. The dvd alone has enough to give you an eyeful of original filmmaking.
Book Description
Resonances is the first volume of Strong on Music, Vera Brodsky Lawrence's comprehensive, three-volume chronicle of the little-known New York music scene from 1836 to 1875, based on the superb private journal of George Templeton Strong, one of the great primary records of nineteenth-century
America. Over this forty-year period, Strong, an avid and articulate music lover, attended a great number and variety of musical events and recorded his responses to them in his journal. Taking these comments--few of them previously published--as a point of departure, Lawrence has rounded out the
scene with a fully documented account of the many worlds of music outside Strong's circle, culled from music criticism, editorial comment, gossip, and advertising found in the New York daily and periodical press.
Resonances immerses us in the deluge of music that from the early 1830s through 1849 descended upon the New York public, vividly portraying concerts, oratorios, and operas, as well as an amazing profusion of musicals, burlettas, melodramas, opera travesties, blackface minstrel shows, and other
forms of popular music. We meet glamorous opera stars and spectacular instrumental virtuosos from abroad, feuding Italian opera companies, the New York Philharmonic Society, and the vicious breed of music critics who agreed only in their antagonism toward emerging American composers. A blend of
meticulous scholarship and witty commentary, Resonances informatively and entertainingly reveals for the first time a fascinating and important area of our cultural past.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant book and fascinating reading.......2003-02-22
I have read a great deal about the cultural history of 19th-century America. And in particular I have tried to learn more about what was going on musically in our country during those times. Pianist/musicologist Vera Brodsky Lawrence happened upon George Templeton Strong's extensive diaries perhaps twenty years ago and realized that he was a true cultural man about town in New York during the middle years of the century and that his comments on musical goings-on were invaluable. So she extracted his musical observations, collected them into three volumes, of which this is the first, and wrote extensive footnotes that explain references that would have little meaning to modern readers. In the process she has written what may be the definitive musical history of the time in New York.
A side note: George Templeton Strong's son, who has the same name, became an important composer of his own era and Naxos is currently recording some of his hitherto ignored orchestral music.
I'm not one given to this sort of thing, but after I read this volume I wrote a fan letter to Ms. Lawrence.
Customer Reviews:
Smart solutions and easy to analyze.......2005-06-02
Professor Jones writes an easy to follow book that can increase your odds of winning. His positional analysis and sum total strategies are excellent tools, and tha fact that he has a degree in statistics give him more clout.
It could be better.......2002-11-27
This book does offer some basic and simple analytical methods about how to choose winning numbers. These methods can be easily abserved by a perceptive lotto player. Also the book discusses a bit about the winning combinations (Dimitriv systems). So basically, there is not much of some creative work. It's for very starters.
A brief overview of statistical strategies.......2002-09-04
The book focusses on three main types of lotteries being played in North America today: 3/4 ball lotteries, 649 style lotteries, and Keno. Powerball and scratch 'n win lotteries are also mentioned. Prof Jones details the major statistical approaches which can be used to maximize the odds of winning any given lottery. Wheeling systems, both full and abbreviated, are discussed. This is a relatively short, small book; it contains plenty of practical 'how to' advice. Players who wish to simply follow a set of cookbook instructions will be right at home here.
I deducted one star simply because I would have preferred a larger book, with more statistical proof to validate the approaches mentioned. I also felt that the discussion of abbreviated wheeling systems was, well, abbreviated; there are a number of templates - hundreds - and while these could have been included, Prof Jones would prefer to sell them to you as a separate product advertised in the back of the book. Still, he does include several commonly used templates, and explain their use.
Actually, there are a number of products advertised in the back of the book, most of them sold by Prof Jones. While I normally prefer my books to be advertisement free, I felt that including advertisements for products very likely to be of great interest to the purchaser probably isn't a huge sin. So, in this case, I chose not to deduct a point. To his credit, there isn't any evidence to indicate that Prof Jones has edited his book in such a way as to make purchase of additional items mandatory. While the products advertised will make the methods described in the book easier to implement, the book does stand on its own.
There are no examples in the book of how odds improve using his methods. There is also no discussion as to whether his methods will improve your odds enough to break even or show a small profit; but, given that there are absolutely no specific financial claims mentioned, it would not surprise me to discover that you'll still lose money by gambling. Whether you'll lose less using the methods in this book is by no means clear.
The book is by no means an exhaustive exploration of the topic; it is more like a 300 MPH overview from 10,000 feet. What it does do is provide the beginning gambler with a basic introduction into choosing numbers which may be more likely to hit. It will stimulate thought, and give the number crunchers something to keep them crunching away into the wee, small hours of the night.
Aside from its brevity and lack of concrete examples and statistical proof, there's really nothing wrong with the book. It's a quick and easy read; it does have specific step by step examples on choosing numbers; and if you believe that statistical analysis will improve your lottery results, then this book is not a bad place to start.
Good luck!
Great workable info .........2002-07-02
I have played lotteries for more than 18 years, learning a lot along the way. This book is one of the best I have read. It is no-nonsense, direct, easy-to-read info...without marketing and sales deceptions.
Knowledge that your neighbor wont tell You.......2001-04-28
i have to say that this is a better version, this is the second version of it, and i must say that it is good. You have to believe in yourself when you play and apply the strategies that Professor Jones says in his book. I dont know his first name but he goes by Professor Jones. Any the methods in the first book will be elaborated even more, along with new methods that he has come up himself (prof jones). the frequency method and the hot numbers are very important strategies when playing the game. it does not matter whether you play the Virginia lottery or the Oregon lottery, or any other lottery out there. they are good. even though i have not won yet, but other reviews here say that they have won okay money. as for myself, i only get a couple of numbers actually (2 out of the six)but it is best something as compared to obtaining absolutely nothing...dont loose patience, itis best to have these strategies than just going on blind luck or guess. just think about it, if your young winning 4 million dollars is alot, and if your old is still good---- book is highly recommended, and i will say this, books such as these are hard to find in just a regular book store where one lives. book is highly recommended more strategies for one to use to your everyday playing in increasing your odds in winning. dont buy the computer stuff offers rely on the book....good luck to lotto players

Good introduction for a novice. Not a must if you have any business background.
This Book Will Make you Money !!!.......2007-03-23
This is a great book on the practical side of "What to Do" and "How to Do It" to make money in commercial real estate.
A lot of books give you a lot of technical definitions and rules, but this book shows you the steps to follow to make things happen in your career.
I keep my under-lined and highlighted copy on my desk for constant review.
Great book, Buy it and make money!
Great 1st time book but too basic.......2007-03-08
Its a great 1st timer book, i bought it because i was a 1st timer. but after reading through half of it it seemed like most of it was a lot of repetitive information that i didn't really need. i would recommended it to 1st timers only.
Best how-to strategy I've read........2006-12-14
For those interested in breaking into commercial real estate, following all the steps in this book, though time-consuming, is a must in my opinion. I couldn't agree more with the strategy presented.
review - Steve Vornea.......2006-12-11
This is a useful book for investing in commercial property. It seems to be geared more toward the novice, and anyone with extensive experience in the field may find many of the concepts to be unnecessary. Nevertheless, a good primer for those learning the field
