Book Description
Metamorphosis is a dynamic principle of creation, vital to natural processes of generation and evolution, growth and decay, yet it also threatens personal identity if human beings are subject to a continual process of bodily transformation. Shape-shifting also belongs in the landscape of magic, witchcraft, and wonder, and enlivens classical mythology, early modern fairy tales and uncanny fictions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This collection of essays, given as the Clarendon Lectures in English 2001, takes four dominant processes of metamorphosis: Mutating, Hatching, Splitting, and Doubling, and explores their metaphorical power in the evication of human personality. Marina Warner traces this story against a background of historical encounters with different cultures, especially with the Caribbean. Beginning with Ovid's great poem, The Metamorphoses, as the founding text of the metamorphic tradition, she takes us on a journey of exploration, into the fantastic art of Hieronymous Bosch, the legends of the Taino people, the life cycle of the butterfly, the myth of Leda and the Swan, the genealogy of the Zombie, the pantomime of Aladdin, the haunting of doppelgangers, the coming of photography, and the late fiction of Lewis Carroll.
Customer Reviews:
A well written work.......2003-03-12
Marina Warner is an amazing scholar and teacher. In this book, she begins with the Metamorphoses of Ovid, and continues with other changes in the human spirit, in both literary and natural history. The chapter on zombies is particularly relevant to her novel Indigo; the explication of the Greek psyche is familiar ground, but well done. The only flaw in this brilliant work is the continual return to Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights as an allegory of life. Her enthusiasm for the painting does not match her vast knowledge of classical and popular literature. However, I recommend this book highly as a helpful tool to any student of the humanities.
Kaleidoscopic study of metamorphosis.......2003-03-07
The book tackles the idea of metamorphoses as a theme in art and literature. Stirred into the mix are mythology, encounters between Europeans and tribal peoples in the New World and how those encounters affected art and literature produced in the Western tradition, meanwhile relating all these to the idea of personal identity. Among the works discussed in detail are Ovid's Metamorphoses, Apuleis' The Golden Ass, Hieronymous Bosch's painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, some Renaissance-era graphic sexual depictions of Leda and the Swan, Maria Merian's late 17th century natural history studies of butterflies, and then onto a discussion of zombies, Coleridge, Jean Rhys, Kafka, Nabokov, photography, Lewis Carroll and more. This may all sound like heavy going, but Warner writes for the layperson, and you need not have read the primary sources to follow her reasoning. (But her discussion and excerpts made me want to check out a copy of Ovid and read it for myself!) The artwork is illustrated by plates, some in color.
The book is an ambitious attempt to raise issues more than come to sweeping conclusions, with chapters titled Mutating, Hatching, Splitting, Doubling. Those interested in Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, and other writers on comparative mythology should find it interesting. The chapters on Mutating and Hatching were more compelling to me as someone with a special interest in art and mythology. Fans of 19th century literature, especially Gothic literature, may prefer Splitting and Doubling. And it is blessedly free of any type of academic jargon. Indeed, Warner also conveys the sheer enjoyment of reading or looking at the material she discusses.

Not what I thought.......2006-11-05
I am doing my own hair for my wedding. This book has a wedding section so I thought it would work. It did not.
Unless you like the kind of hairstyles that are impossible to maintain and that you only see on a runway model, do not buy this book. The majority of the styles are odd and not for every day life. If you are the kind of woman who doesn't believe in spending more than 25 minutes on your hair, Do Not buy this book. These styles take at least an hour to complete and are very hard to do at all.
There is one good thing about this book. It does give good advise on coloring and conditioning. So, if that is what you are looking for, do buy it.
This book led me to believe I was purchasing a hairstyle book. In reality it is only good for hair treatment, because of the unrealistic quality of the styles that they offer.
good advice, cute story, excellent pictures.......2006-08-11
Basic hair care/styling advice throughout the book, very good for someone who wants more general knowledge on hair products, styles, how to take care of but it wasn't very detailed.
there was a cute story throughout the book of 4 friends living their lives and each chapter related a hair issue to what information about hair was written next. for example one chapter a girl was going on vacation so there was advice on what to do with your hair when traveling.
fantastic pictures, especially in the wedding section beautiful hair styles
the book was very well put together and is a nice, enjoyable read...I finally learned what exactly a chignon was and how to create it!
a bit daring.......2006-05-17
the text in the book was quite helpful and the artistry of the photos were great...but the fact of the matter is, someone would have to be crazy or else realllly daring to try some of these hairstyles: think teased huge, feathers sticking out of the head, chopsticks-overload giving a general porcupine look to one hairstyle. as inspiration or perhaps wild runway looks they're wonderful, but i don't know anyone who would ever attempt to wear one of these styles in public. keep that in mind.
A magnificient book.......2005-06-22
This book is magnificient. I'm pretty good at styling my own hair, but this book gave such excellent guides, I would definitely recommend it. What I thought it lacked was more information on where to get hair extensions and indepth info on how to put them on yourself. We all want to look like our best and look different from our daily look and hair extensions make the difference between slight difference in appearance and incredible difference in appearance. I finally found a site worth its salt too, for anyone like me who wants the most.
softandlovelyhair.com is an excellent accompaniment to a fabulous book. Don't travel without this book.
A few good styles buried under pages of useless information.......2005-04-15
Learning how to care for and style your hair seems to take a back seat to a distracting, absurd, and irrelevant storyline of four fictional girlfriends. I did manage to find a few hairstyles that I liked, making it more or less worth the $13.57. I'm all for trying a new look, but this book is innundated with downright ridiculous hairstyles. The photos are not labeled with what style it is, so it is frustrating to try and match styling instructions with the look you would like to achieve. The layout is visually overstimulating and chaotic, making it difficult to find simple answers to styling questions.

Customer Reviews:
The title pretty much says it all...........2002-10-15
There is a reason that many workplaces ban Dilbert cartoons- they are just too darn close to the truth. I've lost track of the number of times that I've laughed myself silly after finding one of his cartoon arcs describing some experience in my own working career.
In his biography, Scott Adams is described as both an engineer and as a member of Mensa. Inspite of this, however, he has a sense of humor....
I'm sure that this confirmation of the absurdity of corporate "culture" has helped more than a few intelligent wage-slaves maintain their sanity over the years. It almost maintained mine.
Classic Dilbert Business Humor.......2001-09-21
I'm Not Anti-Business, I'm Anti-Idiot is a marvelous compilation book featuring more of Dilbert's trademark humor on a sometimes dreadful subject: work. While Dogbert schemes to cheat gullible people, Dilbert struggles with his overly incompetent boss, and Alice is working around the clock on pointless tasks. This book also introduces Asok the intern. So join your favorite Dilbert characters on this oddessy through futile projects, idiotic management, and sarcastic co-workers.
i'm not anti-business im anti idiot.......2001-06-26
One of scott's best books ever. I could not stop laghing. BUY THIS BOOK
Mark's Dilbert Review.......2000-06-16
This book is hilarious, just like all Dilbert books. I would recomend this and other Dilbert books to anyone. Scott Adams is a wonderful writer and artist. Other Dilbert Books include: Don't Step in the Leadership, Fugitive from the Cubicle Police, and Still Pumped from Using the Mouse.
This is another great dilbert book along with many others........1999-06-18
This book is extremely funny and has the most to do with Dilbert's Pointy Haired Boss and Some other of his Co-Workers in Marketing and Management that continually prove to be Humorous and dumb.

Book Description
Who do we call when we're in dire need of help' 911, of course. However some situations that callers perceived as emergencies, may not be so urgent.
Dispatcher: "911. What is your emergency'"
Male caller: "Yeah, I want to order a pizza.
"What's the Number for 911' is a collection of more than 170 stories and actual transcripts of strange, and hilarious 911 phone calls. Most of the people who made these calls needed help all right-but not 911 help. It is an easy read, with stops only for shaking your head, turning the page, and laughing out loud. It's amazing what some people have used their telephones for-Alexander Graham Bell would be shocked.
People love to laugh at the stupidity of others and this book shows stupidity at its, well, stupidest. Here are just a couple of the absurd 911 reports: Male complainant called and requested police call gas stations on all exits of I-95 to find out which ones are open. Female complainant called to request police officer come to residence to change battery in smoke detector as she couldn't reach it. Roger's Department Store called three times asking if they could close during a storm. Complainant called about neighbor keeping a pet cow in the yard.
Customer Reviews:
Very funny read. definitley a pick me up........2007-02-03
I got this book for my mother just before she went into the hospitol for cancer removal and it helped her laugh a little and keep her mind off of things. It is definitely a book with some good laughs in store.
Correcting a faulty review.......2005-09-30
I'm Leland Gregory, the author of the book, "What's the Number for 911?" and I wanted to correct Alexis Mendez's faulty review of my book. 1) The chimp story - well, humor is subjective and if he didn't think it was funny, so be it.
2) I published the story of the man who choked to death on a fish months before the Darwin Awards book - therefore, it can't be referred to as a Wanna Be.
3) Urban Legends: the story of the woman who couldn't find the 11 on her phone was given to me by a 911 dispatcher along with the transcript of the call (how Mendez can claim it's an urban legend without knowing my source is beyond me). The man with his penis caught in a drain. I have the original call of this incident, which, by the way, occurred on July 15, 1994 at the Scottish Inn in Lakeland, Florida (it's available for anyone to hear on my CD, "Wacky 911"). The insecticide in the toilet which caused an explosion was reported in The Jerusalem Times, then Reuters, then United Press International - I always use two unique sources for my stories, so if it's an urban legend, then several reporters and two of the biggest news agencies in the world got fooled first.
I feel silly defending my material like this but I hate the fact that I was accused of false and/or faulty reporting by someone who justified their criticism by using false and/or faulty information.
PS: I gave my own book 5 stars to make up for his review.
Leland
Old jokes and urban legends.......2003-09-24
Oh God, what a waste of time. Look at this:
1) This is supposed to be funny: a woman was attacked by a chimp that escaped the zoo (so?)
2) Darwin Awards wanna-be stories: a man got a fish stucked on his mouth and died.
3)The WORST of all: Urban Legends!!!!!!!
Examples: the story about the lady that cannot find the 11 at her phone (as in nine-eleven), the man who got his penis stuck in the drain and, worst of all, the VERY OLD and false story about the guy who throws a cigarrette inside the toilet after his wife used insecticide in it (the reaction was an explosion).
That third point ruins the whole book, because it breaks the credibility of the other stories.
Avoid this book. I assure you that you will regret purchasing it.
Not quite as funny as you'd think.......2003-07-15
A lot of the 911 calls in here are pretty good, but few are quite up to the "well, duh" quality of, for example, Jay Leno's "Headlines."
Hey ! I know these guys ................2003-04-14
...... that's what I thought.
I work as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and thought I had heard it all until I read this.
You guys in the states get calls just as crazy as we do here in Australia.
Great for a laugh and also an education on when NOT to call 911 (000).
Book Description
One of 2000's biggest book successes was the sleeper best-seller What's the Number for 911', which went back to press three times in less than a month last fall. Now, faster than you can dial 9-1-1, author Leland Gregory delivers his follow-up of more real-life calls to the country's emergency operators. What's the Number for 911 Again' answers the urgent call for more of these wacky conversations. "Can you unplug my coffeepot I left on at my house'" "Where can I get rid of my Christmas tree'" Amazing and hilarious!
Customer Reviews:
Call 911 for this one.......2002-02-18
This book is in serious need of editting - many of the calls are nothing more than transcripts, complete with "hello's, good-byes", and a liberal number of "huh's". While there are some funny 911 calls buried in all the text, the best parts are the pages that resolve the entire 911 conversation to a single question or comment.
Book Description
The fascinating professional and personal life of one of today’s most talented actresses is revealed in this biography of Diana Rigg, one of the sexiest women ever to grace the television screen. Rigg’s high-profile roles are detailed—from the brilliant and seductive British agent Emma Peel in The Avengers to one of the most intelligent and impressive of James Bond’s women (and the only one who actually gets to marry him) in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Rigg’s time with the Royal Shakespeare Company and her current stage career are also profiled. This book tells the story of a rebellious and outspoken woman who has always lived life on her own terms, defying both convention and authority.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Biography of a Free Spirit & Gifted Actress!.......2007-05-13
Though forever linked in the public's eye with her Emma Peel role, Diana Rigg - sorry, Dame Diana Rigg! - is one of England's most respected theater actresses and, judging from this book, one hell of an interesting individual. In an eventful career fueled by a fierce independence and a drive to test new waters, Rigg has scored notable successes in the theater, movies and television along with the occasional failure. Her personal life has been as adventuresome and, as revealed in this biography by Kathleen Tracy, Rigg is as interesting a character as any role she has played.
Born in India and educated in England, Rigg arrived in London in the late 1950s very much a free spirit. Joining what was to become the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1959 she embarked on a theater career, slowly establishing a reputation as a gifted, insightful actress. In 1965, on a whim, she auditioned for the AVENGERS TV series and won the role that made her into a cultural icon.
It isn't overstating matters to say the Emma Peel character exploded on the public conscience, especially the male portion. Here was a beautiful, intelligent, witty and self-assured woman capable of handling all situations, a woman totally unlike anything seen on television previously. Yet, for all the attention given to karate kicks and 'Emmapeeler' costume, Rigg was a marvelously talented actress with a wonderfully expressive face that could effortlessly go from self-confidence to uncertainty to terror. Not to mention a smile that lit up a room and a rich, fruity voice and laugh!
Characteristically seeking new challenges, Rigg left the AVENGERS after two years. Returning to the theater world her reputation as a stage actress steadily grew over the years, Olivier subsequently calling her "a brilliantly skilled and delicious actress." Rigg's track record in films and television was mixed. She was charming in THE ASSASSINATION BUREAU, held her own against George C. Scott in THE HOSPITAL, was the best Bond girl ever in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, tanked in DIANA, was Emmy nominated for IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE and was monstrously evil in MOTHER LOVE. Rigg's personal live was just as varied and interesting.
Rigg was not interviewed for this book, author Kathleen Tracy interweaving comments from previous Rigg interviews with background information and insightful commentary.
Unbelieveably this is the first book on this gifted Tony and Emmy Award winner. Rigg fans will enjoy this book immensely, especially those quoted sections where she reveals herself as a forthright, insightful and self-deprecating 'Dame who considers herself a dame.' Read & enjoy!
talent & hard work.......2007-04-14
Diana Rigg is a very talented actress, who saw her lifelong devotion to her profession rewarded with a nobility-title - awarded by English queen Elizabeth II.
From 1965-'67, when Diana was in her late twenties, she happened to perform in a tv-series called 'the Avengers'. Being coupled as Avenger Emma Peel to her male counterpart Patrick MacNee, Diana's talents turned this series into a true Sixties-icon. In the public eye she lives on for this, although her theatre-, film- and tv-credits span much & much wider. Right down to Shakespeare and James Bond.
It's all very well researched by Kathleen Tracy. Not only Diana's whereabouts, but - most important - also the significance of her various roles to the public, to herself, as well as to the society of her days. Tracy's biography also provides some very good, original & characteristic Rigg-photo's.
Highly recommendable !
Quick, interesting read.......2007-04-07
For Avengers fans as well as Diana Rigg admirers, time capsule of the sixties as well...
Good Information.......2005-01-10
It must be quite a difficult task to write a biography about someone who rarely interviews and lives as privately as possible, so I have to commend the author for even trying in the first place. For fans such as myself who were not even born when (the now) Dame Diana hit the airwaves as the indomitable Mrs. Peel, having this compilation of resources not only satisifes the curiosity, it also avoids any luridness by laying out a story that sticks to the facts as they have already played out. For those looking for new tidbits or speculations on the scandalous, you will be disappointed. For those of a new generation of fans, such as myself, you will highly appreciate the thoughtful telling of this remarkable woman's history.
Damita Syn.......2004-08-19
If you're a true Avengers addict or Diana Rigg devote there's probably not much that will dissuade you from purchasing this book. However fair warning should be given. The fact that Kathleen Tracy is listed as the "author" of this book is laughable. The book really should be titled, "Diana Rigg: The Compilation of Quotes and Information Cribbed From Every Other Story or Article Written about Diana Rigg." I imagine the publisher went with "biography" as the latter would be difficult to fit on the jacket. There's neither an original nor insightful word to be found in this "biography". This book is entirely made up of the content from articles previously published on Diana Rigg. Spend an hour searching on Lexis/Nexus and you'll achieve the same results as the book. Frankly, if I were Diana Rigg I'd be pretty peeved that someone is making money on this. I hope she's getting a cut.

One of the funniest books I have ever read.......2005-06-18
One of those rare books that consistently leaves the reader in tears of laughter (albeit at someone else's expense).
I must say that I have newfound respect for actors after reading this book. The performers in these pages are some of the world's most renowned actors and yet no one escapes unscathed.
My favorite selection is the diary of an actress in a touring company of Romeo and Juliet and her description of the problems she encounters during a performance.
I wish I could give it more than five stars!
Most hilarious book ever.......2005-05-16
Diana Rigg has compiled the most hilarious book I've ever read. If you keep it in the bathroom guests or other family members will wonder why you are roaring with laughter behind the commode door. British wit and droll sarcasm at its finest.
Buy this book.......2000-05-01
The world of theatre criticism can be a brutal and mean place where careers are lost and broken. The chance for comedy is just as enormous. Diana Rigg has compiled some of the meanest, nastiest, and funniest theatre reviews ever published. Playwrights, actors, actresses, directors and the productions themselves are all hung out to dry. This book is a hilarious addition to anyone's collection.
Wonderful collection of humorous theatrical reviews.......1998-06-15
Diana Rigg, as an actor, has turned the other cheek by collecting and editing reviews of theatrical productions, past and present. Although the reviews are often at the expense of the principals in a production, they are written and edited in such a manner that makes them possibly more interesting than the production itself. If biting wit that sometimes draws blood is your thing, then you will enjoy this book.

This book was not what I expected........2007-06-27
I am giving this book 2 stars because I thought it would be great, like Seth Godin or the Wizard of Ads books. I expected a book of "Secret Formulas" as the title says. Instead it felt like a well-written Website 101 book, 90% common sense plus a few good tips sprinkled in. No "oh wow" moments here. Big disappointment. Honestly, I kept reading page after page waiting for the meat, but it was just 2 pieces of bread.
simple & useful.......2007-01-13
I've just started to read this book, but only the first pages let me know I can learn lots of simple things that can improve my business.
It's very easy to understand, good explanations, and very simple but big ideas to work on.
Buy it! (...i promise you i'm not the author and not his mother..)Believe me.
Call to Action: Secret Formulas to Improve Online Results.......2007-01-10
This book is easy to read and has a wealth of good information on creating an e-commerce site that will sell products.
A new must-have reference for online persuasive marketing........2006-11-18
In a world full of books that promise to show you the way to that elusive, successful conversion metric this one delivers. It not only explains the fundamentals but gives you some real-world insight and know-how. It is well written and an easy read. I've marked this book up with more highlighter than in a college text book. Definitely worth every penny.
Very well written book, a "bible" for internet business owners.......2006-07-25
This book is for every decision maker of an Internet business that sells products or services online or offline.
It explains in very clear and non-technical fashion what to look out for when designing web pages and get visitors to do what you want them to do ... and things you should not do as well, something often forgotten when it comes to the question "How to improve the conversion of visitors to customers?"
You can trust the two of the foremost experts about this topic, Bryan and Jeffrey Eisenberg. The know and can prove it with tons of customers they helped to improve conversion via their professional service company with the name "Future Now".
You should also check their other books and the free goodies they offer on their Website. A fountain of knowledge.
