A good accurate reference book showing several actual pages from the Sears Catalog. There are sections on Women's, men's & children's clothing the emphasis being on women.
The only complaint would be that there is not enough, I would have preferred more photos showing a wider range though it is still a very usual book for anyone interested in this time period.

Clothing ART.......2007-06-27

I originally bought this book for the section on Kasik Wong- whose clothing art work is STUNNING! This book features other unique designers who have turned fabric into scultural show pieces. There are things in the book for everyone. I tended to like some more than others- but the sections that showed handcrafted exotic work -puffy and strange were inspirational to me. Others seemed more minimal and origami inspired. Most of the book has beautiful images.

Dennis is relatively unusual among long-lived strips in that after just a couple of years, it achieved its definitive look (Peanuts, for instance, was still morphing toward the end of its first decade). So even though this is just the second volume, fans will find the look, style, and gags as comfortably familiar as today's Dennis (albeit with '50s cars, furniture, and clothing styles, all snappily rendered!). I'm a big Dennis the Menace fan. This is the second installment of the complete Dennis the Menace single panels. I'm seeing most of the panels for the first time - what a treat!

Little Masterpieces by Ketcham.......2006-04-27

Hank Ketcham's Complete Dennis the Menace 1953-1954 is every bit as great as the first volume. This volume, similar in format to the first volume featuring comics from 1951-1952, shows the growth of Ketcham not only as an artist/cartoonist, but also in the comic brilliance from the world of the little menace.

Dennis the Menace began just a few months after the Peanuts began. I grew up with both of these comic strips and still love them today. I could not have asked for a more nicely packaged and published showcase for these first years of the Dennis the Menace series. Although the background items shown in the panels are old fashioned, due to the time-frame in which they were produced, the actual characters and mini-stories look just as fresh and original as they would had you just cracked open your Sunday paper and saw them for the first time.

It is a true testament to the craftsmanship of Ketcham, and to the brilliance of the single panel stories, that today, over 50 years later, these are just as enjoyable as ever. I hope that these books allow a new legion of fans to be introduced to Dennis the Menace. I am already looking forward to volume III.

I give this collection of Ketcham's treasures from 1953-1954 a solid 5 stars and recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor.

No vulgarity. No profanity. No salacious remarks. No racism. No blasphemy. And Minnie Pearl called herself a comedienne? Indeed she did, and so did legions of fans for over fifty years. Even now that she's gone, her memory is beloved by all her admirers and those who value clean and uproariously funny jokes.

Some of these zany stories may lose something without Miss Minnie's unique delivery, but even those that fall a little flat will still cause a chuckle, and none will offend.

Its hard to imagine the ribald monologues of Roseanne Barr or any of today's other so-called funnywomen living on the way Minnie Pearl's classy comedy has. What a delightful book, a must buy for anyone that needs quick material to warm up a crowd or just to have a joke to share with friends. Remember, she stole them and admitted it. Minnie Pearl has a special place as an Icon of American humor. Within a few pages, you easily recall "Howdee" and a grin that grabbed you and didn't let go until you were rolling in the floor laughing at jokes and stories you had heard before and reading them you can picture her telling them wearing that famous $1.98 hat. These stories and jokes often started in Grinder's Switch but were understood from the streets of New York to the plains of Kansas.

I really can't remember all the television shows I saw her on, but she was always the same and always entertaining. Reading the jokes and the stories from her co-stars for the Grand Ole Opry brought back good memories. I especially enjoyed the chapter "Tyin' Ourselves Up in Knots". The chapter "Take Two Lawyers and Call Me in the Mornin'" takes a shot at everyone and what profession would want to be left out of a Minnie Pearl joke book?

I would recommend this book to anyone who truly enjoys a good joke and likes to share it with others. To know who stole it the first time makes it even funnier!

Maybe here in Oz we're used to things being translated from Asian languages into English... I had no trouble with the book, which is by a Japanes co author and illustrates the Japanee rules. I have bought copies as gifts for those learning.

A confusing book on Mah Jong.......1998-04-11

I wanted a good book on how to learn and play Mah Jong. With this book, I felt I was getting a book that was poorly translated from Chinese to English. It was hard to follow and explained a version of Mah Jong I was not familiar with. Maybe a person who is more familiar with the game play would have a better time with this book. For beginners, it is very confusing. It does have some good sections on play and strategy. Granted, it does beat the instructions you get with most Mah Jong sets, but there are better books out there.(see Mah Jong Illustrated)

I started at the beginning of September tracking how much I spend in every catagory, and I have some shaving to do on my spending for sure, but this book lets me track everything from atm fees to my lotto tickets, to gas purchases. I've been able to have my paycheck last through out the week so far for the past few weeks.

I will deffinatly get another book when I need it!!

Worth a look. Supplemental guide........2007-04-15

This book is an excellent, budget, worksheet resource because it's the unplanned for, non-monthly, but still regular expenses that punch holes in any "monthly" budget plan. For those who've forgotten about quarterly, semi-annual, annual, birthday/holiday, etc., expenses it's a real eye opener. Couple that with modern society's growing use/dependency on non-cash transactions . . . credit cards . . . debit cards . . . prepaid cards . . . and most people don't realize how much they're actually spending at any given time/moment. But be FOREWARNED any new budgeters, this book is very weak on "overview" . . . there's no "big picture." A very simplified explanation of why one needs to do what, when, and how rolling into . . . "and this is how we get started" . . . is nowhere to be found. There's a reason one needs to initially track every expense (to identify what you're actually spending your money on) . . . organize that into some form of logical summary (determine the actual total cost of the lattes here, magazines there, fast food, etc.) . . . and develop a plan of attack if change is needed/required . . . is sorely missing. For those new to budgeting, it's not intuitively obvious. I was neither interested in nor cared that they included free budget (Mvelopes) software . . . but I did find it rather interesting that right out of the gate they discourage anyone from using Quicken or MSMoney with the quote, "I have found that for many people there is critical tactile and visual learning that occurs with the manual approach that does not happen as effectively electronically" . . . and then immediately follow that up with their software Mvelopes and all the great, wonderful things it too can do for you . . . guess the name of the game is ultimately still "Money."

As a parent, you can try to tell them what budgeting and saving entails, but the information was MUCH better received in the form of this book. As she sat reading it and said, "Oh, that's a good idea", I felt better about sending her into the world...and her first real job. This book covers everything a novice budgeter needs to know. Add it to the list of must haves for the newly graduated.
