5 out of 5 stars A pleasant journey through Fashion History for a great price!!!!.......2006-11-27

I am in the process of building my own Fashion Design Library with books that covers differents aspects of this fascinating world (drawing, patternmaking, draping, sociological, business and so forth) including Fashion History. I knew about fashion books published by Taschen during a Fashion Design Course I took last Summer in Italy. Previously I got Fashion Now (Icons) from Taschen and this one has an even better price-quality relationship: fancy presentation, high quality of the pictures and brief explanations about each century covered by the 2 volumes and most of the pieces presented. You can really spend hours!!! enjoying all the finishing details of the clothes.

5 out of 5 stars Just to mention............2006-06-27

This is the EXACT same book as the huge meaty tome Fashion, just broken into 2-user friendly volumes and slipcased. Don't do what I did and buy it twice by mistake.....still, not a loss; I gave the slipcovered one as a Christmas present!

It's an amazing book, a true reference for fashion enthusiasts, historical recreators, and costume designers. It is the cornerstone of my collection. I also had to wait a year for it to ship from Germany; glad Amazon finally has it reliably stocked!

5 out of 5 stars An important resource for the costumer or fashion industry professional.......2005-12-03

This book offers a comprehensive collection of exceptional outfits (beautifully presented). Most of which, I have never seen in other books of a similar subject matter. There is an overwhelming wealth of photographs, all in color. Many of the documented outfits also have accompanying detail shots (hugely inciteful). Everything about this two volume set is splendid, the fact that both volumes are soft back in a presentation case (which makes them even more affordable), is easily forgiven. You will find yourself salivating over the first Volume, the 18th and 19th Centuries (fly fringe, lace, chenille fringe, satin covered beads). An invaluable resource !

    5 out of 5 stars Delectable.......2005-11-26

Books on costume history generally come in two varieties: either illustrated with contemporary works of art featuring people in particualr costumes, or with custom-made drawings. The solution offered in this book is unique, and preferable by far. It showcases the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute in sumptuous photographs. The colours, textures and shapes of costumes come across in their full splendour, exhibited on stylish, white dummies. Seeing the weird contraptions women once strapped to their waists in order to give their dress the required shape is also something quite different, and slightly shocking, when viewed in a photograph, as opposed to in a drawing.
The two volumes of this set do by no means attempt to illustrate costume history in its entirety either historically or geographically. They only cover Western fashions in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and even within these confines are selective. The accent, as one might expect, is very much on women's clothing. Also, while the slimmer of both volumes covers both 18th and 19th centuries, the larger volume is dedicated in its entirety to the 20th. In my view, the second half of the latter volume focusses on extreme designer fashion in too much detail, constituting a conceptual breach with earlier parts of the book, where clothing is shown that was actually worn in daily life, and not only on the catwalk. But that is a minor niggle. Designers, illustrators and historians alike are bound to be delighted with this set, and even the casual browser will likely find it hard to put down. Every page is a feast for the eye; the costumes shown are rarely less than dazzling; and the quality of the pictures is exquisite. The books, which come in a slipcase, are stylishly laid out, and offer just enough textual background information. At the price, this is a steal.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring detail.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing set of books if you're trying to reproduce period costume, or get those irksome details that nobody else seems to be willing to provide in close-up detail. The photography is clear and clean - and while KCI hasn't provided a great deal by way of commentary, the lush images and detail shots speak for themselves.

I'm absolutely amazed that this set is selling for such a low cost - even as a set of 'paperback' books, the glossy coffee table quality would normally lead me to expect a significantly higher price.

I read this book and it is one big crossover, like, let's say X-men Inferno. You have to know the story and you have to know characters before it all happens. I can't be satisfied as occasional DC reader or rate it well.

3 out of 5 stars Can be confusing for new readers.......2006-07-19

After Crisis on Infinite Earths the history of the DC Universe had to be blended into one continuity, but not all of that history had been mapped out in advance and some of the continuity was a bit fuzzy. With Crisis almost a decade behind and hindsight being 20/20, Zero Hour was intended to tie up the few remaining continuity errors.

I originally read this story when it came out in monthly installments and I liked it. The events here bled into other books and all kinds of time anomalies occured, like the Superboy of appeared after the death of Superman running into the young Kal-El Superboy, and a Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) from a time period before she was paralyzed showed up and joined the fight.

The crossover tried to promote new characters like Damage and dealt with major shake-ups like what was happening with Guy Gardner, which is what a crossover should do. A regular Superman reader picks it up to see what happens to him and becomes interested in what's happening to Hawkman, so the reader starts buying Hawkman as well. Cross promotion of characters is the general idea here. But Guy Gardner is back to being a Green Lantern and Damage no longer has his own book, and a lot of the other things this crossover tries to promote are no longer relevant. In order to really enjoy this you would need to go and get the back issues, since most of what was happening at this time isn't collected in trades.

A personal critique is that the characters who seem important in the beginning aren't the ones who seem important in the end which is just poor storytelling. Somewhere in the attempt to put in as many characters as possible, the story ends up a bit unfocused.

But, as I said, I did enjoy it, and I still do. It was a story on a huge scale, time burning itself out on both ends. There were twists and turns. There were some very intriguiging paradoxes in the battle between Extant and Waverider. We understand why Parallax is doing what he's doing but at the same time we know he has to be stopped. The artwork is good, and lots of characters make cameos (not quite as many as in Crisis but still a lot).

Keep in mind this was written before everything DC published got collected into trades. You do have to take it in context. And I highly recommend going to you local comic store and picking up the Zero Hour crossover issues of Superman, Batman, etc. They're definately worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars The Overlooked Crisis.......2005-10-18

With all the hooplah around DC Comics right now - they are bringing all their DC Universe titles together for the "Infinite Crisis" crossover that is supposed to change everything (!!) - I am surprised more attention isn't paid to this mid-90s event: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time.

Time was unravelling at both ends, heroes were dying, their efforts for naught against the onrushing entropy that consumed everything. But, as always, the late 20th Century heroes decide to take action to right this wrong, a wrong perpetrated by one of their own. The story was not too bloated (downright brisk, next to the sprawling crossovers today), moved like a good summer blockbuster movie should, and left a lasting mark on the DC Universe. That, and it boasted Dan Jurgens artwork, he also being an overlooked gem in the modern comic artwork field.

Based around the idea that Parallax (former Green Lantern/now hugely powerful Hal Jordan, then a bit nuts after seeing his home city wiped out and having assaulted and bested his former masters, the Guardians of the Galaxy) wishes to redo time to save all his friends and family - and those of his cohorts, Zero Hour follows several dozen heroes as they race to save time or die trying. Along the way, that latter part is certainly fulfilled, as numerous heroes - and some villains - fall to the entropy effect Parallax is unleashing on the timeline.

The original superteam, the JSA, bring the fight to Extant, a former hero-turned-megalomaniac who is aiding Parallax and reveling in the chaos unleashed. These geriatric heroes do not find an easy victory, with the whole team being changed forever. Their story here in fact laid the groundwork for James Robinson and Geoff Johns to reinvent that whole generation of heroes and identities, creating the stellar Starman and the current ongoing JSA, respectively.

But really, all heroes are affected here. The build-up took place over every single issue in the DC Universe, as time shifts began to appear, characters from eras long gone or yet to come started to pop up and unexpected visitors refused to leave after arriving (current Kid Flash, then just Bart Allen, appeared in the pages of the Flash during Zero Hour's build-up). Numerous new heroes were introduced, some of whom are still around (though for how much longer...). While many hardcore fans objected to the use of Parallax/Hal Jordan as the villain - an objection taken shamefully to heart as the deceased hero has been returned to his mythic stature as a Green Lanter - for those of us who had recently started reading DC's stable of titles, the use worked very well. I thought his tragic turn fit well, but that's just me (his home city was wiped from existence, and people expected him to shrug and forget it?). His reasoning fit for what had happened

Over the course of the mini-series the whole wild story came together and in my mind, fulfilled its promise of a new DC universe, changed from what came before. It took a little time for all the ramifications to be felt - James Robinson/David S Goyer/Geoff Johns' JSA wouldn't launch for another four years and change, for example - and many of the new titles disappeared into obscurity. But that's all right. How many people remember Alexander Luthor? Who? Exactly. Created, used and forgotten in a year, as were most "Crisis on Infinite Earths" - the father of all these damned DC Crisis epics - created characters. Granted, not all lived, but you don't have to live to be remembered in comics. Look at Jason Todd, or Bucky...er...

We see long-term fans feel the bitter weight of all these epic tales as they press on the stories today, constantly forcing judgments that are too harsh. Zero Hour came out ten years after Crisis on Infinite Earths (eh, more like nine), and was inevitably compared. The two series, however, are hard to line up. The former was a brief reboot of several titles and characters, and it did a fine job and was over in several months; the latter, the big Crisis, spanned a year and literally restarted the entire DC Universe line of titles. The newest incarnation, Infinite Crisis, is more comparable, as it had dozens of lead-in issues, on top of the 7-issue mini.

Zero Hour itself covered five issues, and was entirely self-contained in those five. All I read at the time was Superman, and I didn't feel out of the loop at all . In fact, I thought it pretty crazy to see all the heroes and villains come out of the woodwork, like the JSA. Parallax came from left field, as did the deaths.

It wasn't perfect, but I look back on it fondly. Few stories are really so good to earn five stars. This is a solid four star story, with great art and a terrific yarn of a plot that will satisfy many. You just have to let the story tell itself, have to let understand that not all characters can act as you want them in your fan fiction, and sometimes the greastest of heroes can become the most tragic villains. Give it a shot; you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Skip this book.......2005-03-03

Zero Hour came as quite a disappointment to me. I am a sucker for a company wide team up story, and a big fan of Green Lantern, but this story just didn't resonate with me. At the end there are a few good pages involving Green Arrow and his conflicted emotional reaction to the situation. But as a whole it is just lackluster storytelling.

If you want to see all your favorite DC heroes band together, do your self a favor and read Final Night, one of the Crisis on Multiple Earth books, or better yet just re-read Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Zero Hour is an ok story, although a little bit of the event to have an event thing going on, there are considerably worse varieties of the event story than this.

It did, of course cause a bit of controversy over the whole Green Lantern thing.

All the heroes, time melting, two big bad guys, and a nasty choice to make at the end.

It’s the wit of the witless. The comedy of the clueless. The giggly fun of celebrities, athletes, politicians, newscasters, and other pompous types planting a foot (or two) firmly in mouth. And no authors could be more qualified to pull it together than Ross and Kathryn Petras, whose calendar celebrating stupidity— The 365 Stupidest Things Ever Said—is a perennial knock-out, with millions of copies sold since its debut in 1995.

It even includes real courtroom testimony:

                    Q. Are you sexually active?
                    A. No, I just lie there.

This is a small book with short soundbites, great to throw in your bag to read on the subway or at lunch. It is smaller than I expected, but it packs a lot in. Some are quotes, some are newspaper headlines, some are from publications. It's a fun read.

Very cute book. Very amusing to read of other's stupidity. (Especially since I did not have to deal with them.)

This is the funniest book i ever read!!!!! It has many catogories from actors to political subjects. This is a great read on a bad day!

5 out of 5 stars Jay Leno's "Headlines" Meets "News of the Weird".......2005-06-30

Absolutely hilarious. I'm still chuckling about the muskrat that was taken to the Humane Society to be "euphemized." The quotes generally come from reputable newspapers and other sources. It would have been helpful if citation dates were included to look up the quote within its original context, though I expect most people aren't interested in researching the original citation. I have heard some of the quotes before and wonder if all of the quotes are true or original.

"Negro Folk Rhymes" is one of the great American poetry anthologies; and it is fascinating as it is heartbreaking, to see how racism affects folklore, and folk life. White collectors who also published in the 1920's, Newman I. White, Dorothy Scarborough, Howard Odum, weren't able to collect this quality and kind of material. White commented that "the negro's songs about his women makes an unflattering exhibit." Talley collected another kind of song, a song that possibly would never have been sung for white people in the 1920's. Many of these animal "nonsense" songs carry a double message about racism and injustice; and there is also a wealth of tender and beautiful love songs from both sexes, and the sweetest lullabies. Talley's book was published in 1922, complete with a thinly veiled, condescending racist introduction from a shrivel-souled academic named Walter Clyde Curry, who simply missed the essence and genius of these songs and poems. Charles K. Wolfe did a great service rescuing these melodies from manuscript. These are nothing like the blues, the melodies have the same wise/innocent quality of Scottish and Irish folksongs, though they're not quite like that either. There is many a striking melody - the one for "The Old Man's Song" in the Phrygian mode, rare in Western music. One gathers from Wolfe's introduction that there was a common folk/string band music among blacks and whites in the South, but the record companies emphasized the differences, putting the blacks in blues and gospel and the whites in country and bluegrass, and the world, unfortunately, followed. Contemporary and traditional folk and country music are now nearly entirely white genres, but their roots are equally black and white. The commercial world, for whatever purpose, strove to divide rather than unite Americans. Let us not be unaware of how this pertains today. I wish that these tunes and words appeared on the same page; anyone wishing to match these tricky tunes with the lyrics, and actually sing them, must make a xerox copy. Quibbles. This is a brilliant production and best read aloud; many rhymes are riddles which are better apprehended by the ear than the eye. "Milly Biggers" is as great a folksong as we have, from deep in slavery times.

Anyone even remotely interested in folklore, folk music, or American history should get this book. It contains over 400 rhymes (some with music) collected in the early 1900s by Thomas W. Talley, a black chemistry professor from Tennessee. Most of the rhymes are American, but there are a few from Africa, Jamaica, and elsewhere.

This alone would be worth the price of admission, but this edition also contains a new essay on the work, plus an updated bibliography and index, plus the original introduction by Thomas W. Talley (an excellent 50-page essay which covers performance practice and even details of instrument construction), plus additional rhymes and music that didn't make it into the original edition.

Great to page idly through or to read cover-to-cover, this book would be a fantastic addition to anyone's collection.

2 out of 5 stars Succeeds In Very Few Areas.......2003-06-02

I bought this guide having been impressed by the Diablo II and Jedi Knight II walk throughs. I will say, that this book is better than having nothing, but not much better.

I agree with the other posters who stated that there are misprints, pieces that are just flat out wrong, and incorrect screen captures. Further, when they did get it right, it seems like the advice was too general - they're just poorly organized. I'd have to re-read sections just to see what they were talking about. You can tell someone rushed to make it to print. Shame of you guys...

I'll give an example of what I mean, in Mission 7, the walk through states (essentially) go through and destroy the munitions dumps first then kill the escaping mercs. However, everytime I did that, I'd never make it to killing them all off - they'd escape at the last minute, thus failing the mission. Very frustrating. So, I did the opposite of what the guide suggested. I killed all the soliders first THEN destroyed the munitions dumps and success!

Don't waste your money - you can probably find better advice for free online.

3 out of 5 stars Info on Missions - Nothing for Online.......2003-02-02

If you want assistance making it through the single player missions, the guide provides a lot of detail in how to get that done. There are a many pages that cover each mission outlining the objectives and hints on how to accomplish each one. Succeeding in each mission is the most detailed part of what's provided in the guide.

As someone already posted, the info on weapons is really just a picture of each one from the game showing the weapon, volume, accuracy, range and fire rate & modes.

Right on the cover of the guide it says "Tips for ONLINE PLAY!". Well, there's not a lot. The last page of the guide (front and back of 1 piece of paper) is where the online tips are. One half of one page tells you how to get online. The rest are just generic hints and nothing to do with specific online maps and strategies for where to go, how to get there, etc.

As you typically go through the single player missions once and likely, assuming you have a broadband connection, play a lot more online with friends (clans), then be warned that you really won't get much, if anything, from this guide book. If you're a SOCOM fanatic, you'll probably want to have it anyway.

This book will provide invaluable help to gamers. It has in depth explanations of each level and has 2 pages of gun info. Another help was the list of voice commands. If you are stuck in this game, the book will always help you to get back on track.

                              Book Description

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy takes the reader on a fascinating, around-the-world journey to reveal the economic and political lessons from the life story of a simple t-shirt. Over five years, business professor Pietra Rivoli traveled from a Texas cotton field to a Chinese factory to a used clothing market in Africa, to investigate compelling questions about the politics, economics, ethics, and history of modern business and globalization. Using the story of the t-shirt to illustrate the major issues of the globalization debate, this uniquely entertaining business book offers a surprising, enlightening, and balanced look at one of the major topics of our time.

The book is a good read, since I am taking my international trade class, this is actually one of the require reading. If someone who is very liberal, or cuddle to grave type of mentality, this book does not offer the cuddly senstivitive that the faint hearted people are looking for. But it is quite realistic. If you can look pass the sweatshops and all, this is a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but light-weighted.......2007-09-11

The book is an advocate of free market and a defender of the globalization. Basically the author portraits non-market forces to be bad (examples: artificial constraint on the labor worker's mobility, international trading protection, and restriction of new technology applications). She also proposes that free trade is good (example: used apparels in Africa). It is an interesting angle with which to examine the globalization phenomena. By recognizing that there are non-market forces at play, one should, or so the author seems to suggest, attribute negative effects (such as sweatshops) to these forces and work on eradicating such forces. The ideal situation would be, as author implies, an absolutely free market operating in bringing everyone maximum benefit.
While there may be novelty in this theme, I do not feel that it merits all the details and tidbits as presented in the book. In fact, I find this book more like a research log than a final product. The stories and observations are definitely interesting and well-written. However it is not always clear where they lead to and what conclusion they are designed to support. I think the book can be reduced to 1/3 of its volume and still be able to make the same points.
On the other hand, many conclusions are not well supported. For example, about trade restrictions, the author argues that US quota systems impact how capital and labor flows in the world, and shape the economy of other countries. While it is obvious that all US trading partners would behave under the influence of US trading policies, more quantitative evidences are required to ascertain the extend of such influence. Such details are lacking in the book. As another example, the book stated that China lost more textile jobs than the US. Therefore, the US jobs are not going to China, but are just disappearing due to technology advances. Such claim is not well-supported, either. These two forces (technological advances and job relocations) can both contribute to the job loss. Their relative importance in the US cannot be indicated by how much textile jobs are lost in China. (In addition, the book does not point out that most Chinese factories operate at a lower technological level than their US competitors. Therefore, the job loss rate due to technological advance is not the same in US and China.)
On a more grand scale, the book fails to address the following issue, which is very relevant to the topics at hand. Globalization in essence is a process of integrating many previously local markets into a unified global market. Previously, each market has different states of balance and is supported by different Government infrastructure. After integration, capital, labor and product flow to maximize profit for the capitalists. Such flow disrupts all local balances before a global balance is reached. For example, the labor cost in the US today is reasonably high because most people have the choice of working as blue collar or white collar workers. Some people are willing to work for lower wage to avoid the extra training and investment required for white collar jobs. However the difference in wages cannot be too large. In China, on the other hand, the pool of unskilled labor is huge and opportunity of getting trained and advancing into white collar jobs is very limited. Therefore, the unskilled labor cost is very low in China. Moreover, the tradition and culture in China allows for lower safety standards and environmental standards as imposed by the Government. Now the current state of balance in the US is the result of adjustments over generations and is relatively optimal. In a global market, however, the US cannot keep its balance until the whole world reaches the same balance. In the long run, such re-balancing is not a big problem and is even desirable. However, in the short run, it brings shock to the US markets, and such shock is unevenly bore by the arguably most vulnerable population: the workers. To me, this is a very important issue in globalization. Economically, globalization is win-win and everyone eventually will benefit. Humanitarianly, however, there are people who suffer in the process and it is the duty of the society to help them and (God forbid) protect them.
Overall, I'd say that this is a very interesting and thought provoking book. I enjoyed reading it at my leisure. However, I don't consider it to be of the caliber of an Economics textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Can you understand global economics?.......2007-07-05

It's all about the money, someone said. This wonderful book starts with the growing of cotton subsidized by the US government, the spinning and weaving in China, the T-shirt making in Bangla Desh or wherever, its wear in the United States, and its ultimnate fate as second-hand clothing in West Africa, the only free market found by the author.
A simple and elegant account of interconnected global economics, of who gets value, who adds value, and who gets the money. Fun to read.

An intelligent, fair minded, well-researched, and very interesting book. I was assigned to read it for a class, so I had to force myself to open it, but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down. The book is not only informative, it also reads like a good story. The author is an economics professor whose writing style is friendly and accessible. Rather than being yet another abstract book about the global economy, it's about how everyday people function in, and are affected by, the global economy. The book doesn't take sides, it just informs the reader about something that affects us all.

5 out of 5 stars Good, casual read offering good perspective.......2007-01-15

This book takes a pretty balanced approach to questions of globalization by tracing how a T-shirt is produced, from raw materials to the folded T-shirt in a department store, to the used T-shirts that are reprocessed or go to developing countries for a second life. Probably everyone can learn something from this book, and the narration is fairly engaging (it was good plane reading for me). The writer tries to keep the book agenda-free, putting forth both economists' and anti-globalizers' perspectives and describing how, to a certain degree, an effective global economy needs pushes from both camps.
