    Book Description

In this, the first collection in English of feminist-oriented research on Japanese art and visual culture, an international group of scholars examines representations of women in a wide range of visual work.

The volume begins with Chino Kaori's now-classic essay "Gender in Japanese Art," which introduced feminist theory to Japanese art. This is followed by a closer look at a famous thirteenth-century battle scroll and the production of bijin (beautiful women) prints within the world of Edo-period advertising. A rare homoerotic picture-book is used to extrapolate the "grammar of desire" as represented in late seventeenth-century Edo.

In the modern period, contributors consider the introduction to Meiji Japan of the Western nude and oil-painting and examine Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and the role of one of its famous artists. The book then shifts its focus to an examination of paintings produced for the Japanese-sponsored annual salons held in colonial Korea.

The post-war period comes under scrutiny in a study of the novel Woman in the Dunes and its film adaptation. The critical discourse that surrounded women artists of the late twentieth-century--the "Super Girls of Art"--is analyzed, followed by a consideration of gender ambiguity and cross-gender identification in contemporary anime and manga.

Cobra - an extremist militia dedicated to the violent overthrow of the American government. G.I. Joe - an elite anti-terrorist squad created to protect the country from Cobra. The Transformers - sentient, shape-shifting robots from the distant planet Cybertron, embroiled in a civil war between the benign Autobots and the conquest-minded Decepticons. Only a conflict that threatens two worlds could bring these disparate groups together! When Cobra Commander tries to use hyper-advanced Cybertronian teleportation technology for his terrorist activities, a malfunction of epic proportions occurs. The super computer that controls the teleportation gate scatters several Transformers into the time stream, marooning them at various points in Earth's history. If the time-tossed robots are not rescued, temporal feedback will unleash a firestorm that will rage throughout history, utterly destroying the planet. Meanwhile, on Cybertron, the evil Shockwave plots the ascension of the Decepticons! Only by allying with Cobra and the mysterious Transformers can G.I. Joe avert a disaster that could consume two worlds.

5 out of 5 stars THE SEQUEL SURPASSES THE ORIGINAL.......2005-05-20

This story takes places two years after the events in G.I. Joe Vs. Transformers Volume one. The Transformers have returned to Cyberton where the Autobots are stunned to see that Shockwave has gained control of Cyberton and the Autobots are now on the run from his forces. Back on Earth, the Cobra Commander has a secret Cybertronian technology ace up his sleeve...namely Starscream who was still held on Earth. Cobra Commander approaches Destro with a plan to use the Cybertronian technology to open a wormhole to the Transformers world and take control of the supercomputer Teletran 3. With this they can control Cyberton and steal more technology and use it to create wormholes all throughout the Earth to deliver weapons without being caught. The G.I. Joe team learns of the plot due to a well-placed spy, and tries to stop Cobra but when a stray bullet causes a malfunction in Teletran 3, all Hell breaks loose.

Teletran 3 scatters numerous Transformers throughout Earth's timestream and uses it's camouflage mode to lock the robots into vehicle mode that is appropriate to whatever time period they landed in. Worse yet, the upheaval of the time stream will result in holocaust for the planet Earth unless the Transformers can be recovered and returned to Cybertron within 12 hours. While Ultra Magnus keeps Shockwave and his forces at bay with an energy field, the Cobra and G.I. Joe members must now form an uneasy alliance to travel into the timestream to return the missing Transformers before the world is destroyed.

The teams split into four groups with one group going to 1970's era California complete with pimp daddies and big cadillacs, while another group ends up in mobster infested Chicago of the mid 1930's. The most interesting scenario is the group that journeys to an Earth 15 years in the future in a post-apocalyptic where Shockwave has led a successful invasion of Earth and humans are enslaved. Duke, now severely battle-scarred leads a resistance that includes former Dreadnok members and they are aided by a champion Autobot who will come as a bit of a surprise. The fourth group? Well, telling you where they end up would be giving too much away but the payoff is well worth it once you read the story.

As Shockwave has always been my favorite Transformer I loved to see him front and center as the main antagonist. This cold, mechanical Decepticon was always far more appealing than the melodramatic Megatron. It was also interesting to see the Joes and Cobra forced to call a truce and work together. I especially liked the Baroness and Roadblock teaming together in the 1930's. Unfortunately these segments are relatively short and it would have been great to see more interplay between the two rival groups. If there is one minor complaint it's that the whole story is a bit contrived and things happen just to happen without much logic. That aside, this was a very strong sequel to the first book and I think it was even better due mainly to Shockwave's involvement as well as another group of Transformers who I will leave as a surprise. . The art by E.J. Su and Tim Seeley was fantastic and their vision of the future, Decepticon-controlled Earth was truly chilling. Well done!

A good love relationship isn't really that important. In fact, it uses up a lot of time you could spend thinking about yourself . . . and doing things all alone or with your drunken, loser friends. That's why Ben Stein has written How to Ruin Your Love Life. Following up on the wild success of his pioneering "do-the-opposite-of-what-I-say" self-help book, How to Ruin Your Life, he now brings you, in 44 easy-to-follow-steps, ways to definitively and absolutely . . . ruin your love life.

The essays in this bitingly humorous book include such master strokes as: "Talk about Yourself Exclusively," "Make Fun of Your Lover's Family," "Demand Expensive Gifts from Your Lover," and "Compare Your Lover with Lovers You've Dated in the Past." And then there's the most important one of all: "If You're Dating Someone Who Has a Lot of Problems, Is Generally a Mess, and All of Your Friends Dislike Him or Her, Get Married Anyway—Marriage Will Solve All of Your Problems."

This work will not only make you laugh out loud, it will allow you to honestly assess how many of these relationship-killers you (and your lover) are currently engaging in. Learn from this book—and for heaven's sake, do the opposite right now!

4 out of 5 stars A quick, fun read that uses reverse psychology to drive home its point.......2007-03-13

Instead of writing another book of advice on what to do to KEEP your guy or gal, Stein writes a tongue in cheek book on how to drive your prospective lover or mate away. By doing so, he underlines the fact that you should clearly do the opposite of following his advice if you want to find romance- and does so humorously.
The information he provides seems as though it SHOULD be second nature but it apparently isn't, since so many people keep making the same mistakes. So Stein suggests they use certain tactics to GUARANTEE they'll keep people at a distance - talk too much about themselves, be interested in marrying only for money, be overdramatic, pick fights when things get too calm, etc. You get the point. This book is such a quick read that you could probably browse through it in the bookstore in less than an hour... but you might want to buy a copy for that friend (and everyone knows one) who keeps making the same romantic mistakes over and over. Or just buy a copy and leave it on your coffee table. I guarantee people won't be able to resist looking through it.

4 out of 5 stars What you always knew.......2006-06-12

In this book, Ben Stein reviews many of the things we always knew were unattractive in a prospective or current mate or lover. They're in a lot of movies about romance. We see the behavior in others and shake our heads. And as we read this little book, we nod and say, "I knew that." So if we already know all this, why read the book?

We should read this book now and every so often just to remind ourselves of the behaviors that could kill our romance. It's like holding up a mirror and really taking a look at ourselves. All of us can see in others what we can't see in ourselves, even when the behavior is as obvious as pointing out our lover's imperfections in front of his friends. Or when it's a bit more obscure, such as overdramatizing everything. When you read about people who talk about themselves exclusively, don't you just want to shake them and say, "Wake up"? Well, consider this a wakeup call.

Stein's telling of the behavior in a reverse psychology form helps to clarify and isolate the behavior. It's different from saying "thou shalt not," possibly seeming sillier to some, but even viewing his style in that way can make what he says more immediate.

Readers may not find this pleasant reading, but most will surely find it thought provoking. And those who are interested in the subject might also enjoy "He's Just Not that Into You" or even "Sex and the City."

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-10-27

It's witty, funny, and accurate! Now I understand why my ex is still single at 42, and why I couldn't put up with that relationship anymore. My ex was very proficient when it came to doing all that this book says you shouldn't do. Following all this rules helped her to ruin her love life. And somehow that helped me to realize that there are some kind of people that I don't want to be with at all. You also learn by being on the other side of the one person that follows these rules.

5 out of 5 stars One of a great series, Good reverse Psychology.......2005-06-20

Ben Stein is one of those rare Renaissance men who seem to be able to put their talents to any task and do a good or better result. This Book is one of his better efforts! Unfortunetly, it won't be read by those folks who need it the most! (Not that I am any paragon of virtue myself.)Bless you Ben and save Ferris!

                  1 out of 5 stars In a man's world ..........2004-06-22

... everyone is born on an even playing field, and a chirpy, positive mental attitude combined with advanced degrees automatically = big money & nice cars (which seem to be Mr. Stein's definition of success). Mr. Stein, tell that to the people I know who have Ph.D.'s from prestigious institutions, but who work for $6.00 an hour because they weren't born with the right knobby connections that obviously surrounded you from the time you first drew breath.

In a man's world, "real-world" examples in self-help books for women always include references to "making their husband a home-cooked meal for the first time in ages" and "cleaning the house", while the examples for men contain references to "doing yard work" and "working extra hours on the job."

I have to say that I was a bit surprised to find the anti-working class, anti-female bias in this book, but I was actually flabbergasted to see Mr. Stein's childish blasts against vegetarians.

Because Mr. Stein is a household pet rescuer, I find it bizarre that he hates vegetarians so much and thinks that we should be chowing down on veal (in order to not appear "holier-than-thou"??) if it is offered to us at our friends' houses. Excuse me, but all of the vegetarians I know (including myself) are the most discreet people on earth when it comes to not eating meat and would not dream of even disclosing that we are vegetarians if we are guests somewhere; preferring to come up with some polite excuse not to eat the dish served or to simply say nothing at all and push the food around the plate to make it seem like we did indeed eat. In fact, we often find *ourselves* on the receiving end of unprovoked "holier-than-thou" verbal attacks from anti-vegetarian people such as Mr. Stein as our intelligence, personalities, and very souls are attacked by people who are very defensive about vegetarianism for some reason.

The fact that there are more female vegetarians than male vegetarians and the fact that being vegetarian is seen as a "feminine" characteristic in our society surely added fuel to Mr. Stein's petulant fire.

In a man's world, this is a great book. In my world -- it's not.

The first sentence in the first chapter of this book sets the tone for all that comes afterward. Straight away, the author gets his subject's birth date wrong. (For those unfortunate fans who suffered through this painful work of fiction, Chris Isaak was born on JUNE 26, 1956, not in July...)

Wishing not to be so negative as I continued to read, I tried to ignore the spelling and punctuation errors that riddle the book - that could easily be attributed to an inexperienced typesetter... But the errors in fact and history that permeate Mr. Reid's book simply render the entire effort worthless.

His research for this book is sloppy, at best, and he clearly is not at all familiar with Chris Isaak, his music, his fans, or the San Francisco music scene. He gets every aspect of his subject's life incorrect, from his blatantly wrong description of Chris' hometown of Stockton, CA, to his ridiculous assessment of the meaning behind each of Chris' songs. It's obvious, to even the most casual of fans, that this author hasn't a clue about his subject.

There are so many mistakes in this book; I'd need to write a book just to document them... Ridiculous, careless errors, like identifying the actor who won the role in the film "Something Wild" that Chris had been intended to play as "ROY Liotta..." (Again, it's "RAY Liotta...") Very simple to confirm, easy stuff to get right... But no, Reid, perhaps in his haste to release the book, just didn't do enough due diligence... Other errors? Reid's statement (on page 63) that Kenney Dale Johnson and Roly Salley "were judged to be too inexperienced to participate in the final recordings" of Chris' first album "Silvertone." Neither man had joined Chris' band at the time the first record was recorded - something Reid, himself noted earlier on page 57, from an interview with Kenney as he discussed meeting Chris for the first time: "When I first met him, he had most of his first record recorded." Clearly, Reid didn't bother to build a timeline chronicling the events of Chris' life, both major and minor, to see where events intersected or where more information might be needed. His ignorance with regard to the San Francisco Punk scene in the late 1970's, the ashes from which Chris and his new band emerged, is also completely laughable. His statement that The Avengers (the band Jimmy Wilsey formerly played first bass, then guitar for,) did not open the last show for the Sex Pistols at The Mabuhay Gardens... That now legendary show was at Winterland... and that fact took all of 10 minutes to confirm.

For what it's worth, an easy 95% of Reid's information came from Internet sources. (How do I know this? I researched every item listed in the book's bibliography - the vast majority of which came from the "San Francisco Days" site. What's left came from other online sources, and the few books listed in the bibliography are reference books on other topics - like the Leonard Gardner novel, "Fat City," from which Reid apparently culled all his erroneous details about Stockton...) Google "Chris Isaak" and you'll find all the same information the author used to write this book. What's more, you'll probably find that by reading those original articles, you'll gain a much more complete, far less opinionated picture of the guy.

                  3 out of 5 stars Good coffee-table reading.......2005-01-20

Interesting ,particularly the chapters about his beginnings. I also liked the song by song analysis which puts a new perspective on some songs. However, the author never mentions the numerous single-only/bonus tracks, which is a shame as many of them are easily as good as the album tracks (So lovely is the night, partly sung in Japanese is a gem among others)There are also some factual mistakes,Link Wray's Rumble is credited to Duane Eddy and Only the lonely by Sinatra is NOT the Orbison song.A list of the covers played live over the past 20 years would have been welcome as well. So,a very good introduction to Chris Isaak's world and music but a bit light for the long-time fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Recommended for Adults .......2006-09-17

I was very rusty, having played piano for over 30 years but not touching a keyboard in a long time. I had just bought a new modern keyboard and needed something to jog my memory with a little theory and yet was interesting and fresh to keep me going.
The DVD is well done and easy to follow and stop. The book is all I could ask for and I appreciate the bits of blues history just as a side note.
There are extra exercises, if you choose, to modulate to different keys and to strengthen your skills along the way, which is something the other books didn't have.
I did a lot of research and comparisons before I picked this set. It's not for a rank beginner. You do need to know how to play some, but if you have played at least a year, get this book and have a good time.

                    5 out of 5 stars Blues Piano.......2006-08-20

I'm new to the piano but not to music (guitar). I can read music (a little... but not in 'real time'). This book is excellent. It keeps the techinical music score to a minimum but still gets across the basic of the Blues plus loads of tricks that can be strung together when improvising (as you'd expect). This the way I taught myself rock / blues guitar and it suits me... learn the basics (chords, structures), learn some sacles and add on a few finishing touches. Perfect!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Blues Instruction Books.......2005-02-22

This is one of the best beginning blues instruction books I've found. It teaches a bit of blues theory and provides the basic framework for the blues, but Tricia also provides the beginner with a few blues tunes to play. You can find books with advanced blues songs (from established performers) and you can find books with blues "riffs"....but you won't find many bookes for beginners that have good sounding, playable, blues tunes. Ms. Woods delivers on all fronts.

this book is more like a practice plan for blues rather than just a collection of a bunch of riffs (which many books are). the CD quality is poor, but i can live with it. the CD is basically a recording of the author and students going through the lessons. i found the book MOST helpful for building a basic technique. highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Tactics Workbook - Nice and Big Format.......2006-09-22

I really like the "large" (about 8" x 11") workbooks that I have gotten on both very basic tactics ("Chess Tactics for Students) and on chess opening traps ("Winning Chess Traps for Juniors").
The print is big and easy to see with big diagrams. I don't like books with tiny little print and diagrams so small you need a magnifying glass (should be included with the book!). I don't have s seeing problem, but I just like my tactics and trap workbooks in the large print format.
"Chess Tactics for Students" was my starting tactics book. It is good for beginners. My only small grips are I found some printing mistakes and wish it had more puzzels to work on (but maybe that is a plus!).
This is a good book for a beginner after they learn how the pieces move.

3 out of 5 stars Good Tactics Problems for Beginners but lots of mistakes.......2006-08-04

If it wasn't for the mistakes in both solutions and some obvous typos this would be a very good first tactics book for any age. It needs to be corrected and a couple of problems removed that do not work and replaced by some that do. A better quality control was needed!
Now I feel tactics are one of the most important things for students who are new to improve their game. Getting some tactics workbooks and opening chess traps books are a good way to accomplish improving over all tactics.
This book will still help you get started, but there are a lot of choices of simular books without so many mistakes.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book but has flaws.......2005-10-19

This is a good book for students. My only complaint is there are a number of errors. It should have been checked by Fritz

5 out of 5 stars The multiplication tables of chess.......2004-12-23

I won't repeat what other reviewers have said, but merely add my advice: please don't start by thinking you can read this book once and then move on.

Let me ask you a question. What's 4 times 8? What's 6 times 7? Chances are you didn't have to "think" about the answers. The numbers 32 and 42 just popped into your head. Right?

That's what this book should be to you.

To get the best value out of this book you need to MEMORIZE these positions until you are sick to death of looking at them. Although you may not encounter them at first: Trust me - these positions will occur in your games.

I suggest going through the book once in 10 days, then take 8 days, then 7, then 5, then 3, then 2 days and finally do all 400 exercises 1 day. By that stage, completing the book in one sitting should take no more than two hours.

This will increase a beginner's rating by 200 points MIMIMUM and cost no more than the price of the book and a month of 20 minute-a-day practice.

Try it if you don't believe me. Or forget my advice, and I hope to play you one day. Prepare yourself for a thrashing. ;)

This book provides some good exersizes for kids to go over. I found a few mistakes in the solutions. Could use a little improvement there. Otherwise it is well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Make More Money by Connecting with You Clients!.......2007-04-01

It's all about connecting and stories are the way to do it. If you're a traditional analytical and details adviser, this book teaches you how to connect with your clients in a way that they understand. Because of using just a couple of the examples in this book, I have seen my closing ratio increase 25%! Using stories helps me to really "help" my clients rather than "sell" them.

This book draws your attention to the least focused aspect of financial advisory practice which inturn make up a significant difference in the advisor's overall success. It is a must have for all advisors. I believe in retrospect it is the 80/20 rule book for financial advisors.

Don Taylor, co-author of Up Against the Wal-Marts This book has it all. Common sense ideas you can use right now, technology tips for the future, and an easy-to-read, motivating style. Outsmarting Goliath is a must-read for every small business owner who doesn't want to stay small. comments: I have played a lot of sports going through school and each of my coaches at all levels have always stressed fundamentals and then gone on to teach advanced theories and plays . In reading Outsmarting Goliath I am struck with the degree to which the author has gone to stress the fundamentals of a healthy small business, and then moved on to add tremendously helpful, simple and yet sophistocated ideas. Bartering! What a great idea I would have never thought of. I bartered to get a new phone system with voice mail and it cost me less than 1/3 of the purchase price, and there was no tax! Her down to earth and sometimes funny anecdotal accounts of small business owners who have tripped or succeeded have provided me with a treasure trove of wonderful tips and ideas, some of which I have already implemented. I will add more over time.
