Book Description
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (1883-1971) is a fashion icon unlike any other. She invented modern clothing for women: at the height of the Belle Époque, she stripped women of their corsets and feathers, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits, and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced slacks, costume jewelry, and the exquisitely comfortable suit. She made the first couture perfume-No. 5-which remains the most popular scent ever created.
In this beautiful volume, the glorious life of the incomparable Coco Chanel shines again through hundreds of illustrations and the lively prose of Edmonde Charles-Roux, her official biographer and close friend. Chanel knew and collaborated with the likes of Picasso, Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Cocteau, Jean Renoir, and Visconti-even as she matched their modernist innovations by liberating women from the prison of 19th-century fashion and introducing a whole new concept of elegance. The staggering collection of photographs amassed by the over decades of friendship with Chanel sheds new light on one of the great stories of the modern age. AUTHOR BIO: Edmonde Charles-Roux began her journalistic career at Elle and ultimately became editor-in-chief of French Vogue. She has published three novels, among them To Forget Palermo (Oublier Palerme), which won the Prix Goncourt in 1966.

Chanel!.......2007-05-28
I paid almost full price for this book and I don't regret it. I found this coffee table book just lovely.
I am not a fashion expert. I'm just a reader interested in interesting people, so I was looking for a book on CHANEL that gave a brief background on her life and photos of Coco and some of her fashions. Well, this book seemed to fit the bill---for me. I was not disappointed.
I have enjoyed this book very much and it sits on my living room table , ----for the book to be browsed by others.
Entertaining book with mostly pictures.......2007-04-08
I was looking for a book showing photos of Chanel's clothing designs and styles. This book focuses more on her life and the celebrities and cultural/social trends of her era (spanning 1910's - 1950's), so if you are looking to see her clothing styles and designs, you will be disappointed as there isn't that much coverage of the actual clothing. However, it is a very absorbing, encyclopedic, pictorial collection of the people of Chanel's time and you can spend many a lazy Sunday afternoon thoroughly exploring les temps perdus. There are many many pictures of Coco Chanel - like Madonna, she looks different every few years, a real chameleon. It retails at $65, so the $37 Amazon price is a good deal. It is a heavy thick book with glossy pages.
Chanel and Her World.......2007-04-06
I was disappointed in the text. I guess from the title I should have expected some world history. The story line is somewhat incoherent and doesn't seem to present her life very well. I had to use the index to find a couple lines of reference to her "Boy", a romance started in the story and then dropped, only to be finished much later and with no real detail. Either Chanel was very closed mouth about a lot of her life or the author didn't know her that well. Also, there are a lot of pictures of rather irrelevant items. I wouldn't purchase it again.
Coco Chanel: The French self-made woman.......2006-06-01
From an orphanage in France to the Ritz hotel in Paris, Coco Chanel created an entire style empire that lives on. A French fasionista version of Eva Peron for the couture world. Coco remains an icon and legend.
A designer of authentic beauty.......2006-05-26
This is a substantial book in both size and pictorial content.
As an ideal complement to the Metropolitan Museum's Chanel exhibit last spring (2005), this book actually exceeds - and outlasts - the exhibit itself.
More than just an intelligent, fascinating woman, Chanel was a fascinating opportunist in the way that she manipulated and transformed the trends of her times (and many men of her times), turning them to her advantage. She was as much a businesswoman and social and cultural politician as a fashion designer, and to see her in this book's big, beautiful photographs, modeling her own creations, is an inspiration to any woman who disbelieves that humble beginnings and a less than conventionally perfect countenance can lead to high achievement.
The best photograph of all - the photograph that tells all - graces the book's cover: one look at that face of intelligence, intensity, self-composure, and elegance, and one knows what the book is all about (philosophically as well as biographically) even before opening it.
The classic Chanel endures as a legend and lesson in the achievement of authentic beauty, i.e., defined by compelling creation rather than passive, taken-for-granted standards of acceptance.

Great Gift for New Parents.......1999-12-30
Ditto the previous review about this hilarious book. I have given it several times as gifts to new Moms. It really helped me cope when someone gave it to me with my first child. It really does help you laugh at the frustrations and not feel like you are alone in experiencing them!
THIS BOOK IS GREAT!!!!!!!.......1999-06-30
This book is great. . . I love this book. I started reading this book yesterday. I read a little of it and then a little later my Mom read me the whole thing. This book is hilarious and funny. And my Mom said that some of those jokes happened to her with me.
A must for any new or about to be new parents!.......1997-08-04
What a great book! If you thought "What to expect when your expecting" was telling you everything, THINK AGAIN! Every cartoon has something for the new (or old) parent. I laughed so hard when reading this book, it actually started my labor. The antics of Zoe really prepared me for my own child, and I enjoy every one of the Baby Blues books over and over as my child grows. When I feel that life is overwhelming with my baby, I read one of these books and suddenly, it all comes into focus, because obviously other parents have gone through the same thing. I have purchased these books for other mom's or mom's to be that I know, and they're great books for a baby shower

"Speaking as someone who was named after a saint who chose to die rather than give up her virginity, I can relate to The Catholic Girl's Guide to Sex. I wish this guide had been around when I was in high school! I went to Catholic school for eleven years and I'm telling you, The Catholic Girl's Guide to Sex is one funny, sexy book."
BARBARA KEESLING, AUTHOR OF THE GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO BAD GIRL SEX
"When I was growing up Catholic I recall that two of the great mysteries of Catholic life were: "What is the third secret of Fatima?" and "Do Catholic girls do it?" Of course I wasn't sure what "it" was. Thank heaven for Melinda Anderson and Kathleen Murray; a couple of very now Catholic girls not afraid to be funny, honest, and sexy. And you thought Bridget Jones had problems?"
RICHARD GLEN MICHAEL DAVIS, CO-AUTHOR OF GROWING UP CATHOLIC
"A very funny and dirty book, and shockingly comprehensive. (You might have to issue it with a plain brown wrapper!) I had no idea that Catholic girls had THAT much guilt to deal with; until I read The Catholic Girl's Guide to Sex, I thought Jewish girls were the guiltiest."
LISA BIRNBACH, AUTHOR OF THE OFFICIAL PREPPY HANDBOOK

Misses the Boat.......2007-01-13
The book appears to poke fun at real cultural issues that abound poorly educated Catholics but that's sad because it misses the boat on the fact that there is nothing meant to ever be guilt ridden about Catholic sex. Catholic sex should be an expression of the overall relationship two people have & marriage for more reasons that I can count for a Catholic is the best way to express that sexual intimacy. The reason why I found this book to be disappointing is because it's sad that so many Catholics (lapsed or practicing) feel this badly about sex because of some warped Puritanical vibe that has taken over the body, sex, & the beauty of the two becoming one in a marriage making it into something it never was or ever should be in the Western World. Catholicism does not view sex as dirty, bad, sinful, or something to be ashamed of, this is a mistaken belief that many have mislabeled as Doctrine. Instead sex is more than just a physical moment that leaves someone the next day to do the "walk of shame". Nope, it is a powerful and sacred experience that should be pleasurable & meaningful within marriage (note all religious groups hold the marriage standard so Catholicism has no difference there). If one feels guilt for certain sex choices then maybe taking the time to look at his/her own responsiblity for those choices would fix that instead of trying to pass the buck onto the Church. As a Catholic gal myself it makes me feel real sympathy for these ladies & those who find the book to be "truth" instead of satire because it means they have never experienced the really beautiful & intense nature of the total completeness that exists in Catholic sexual, emotional, & spiritual intimacy with one's spouse that is beyond this world.
fab.......2006-10-12
it was well written, funny....and they certainly know their way around the Vatican and how to keep those numbers LOW!
More like guide to being a sinful Catholic.......2006-04-23
Just reading a review of this book is enough to know that this book is far from being a guide to for young Catholic women to the ways of holiness. This book appears to be another feeble attempt to encourage young ladies to laugh at their faith and to laugh at the Church. If you take being a Catholic seriously this is no book for you.
Don't waste your money!!.......2006-02-11
There are "catholics" and CATHOLICS.These young ladies are in the first category, unfortunately. You cannot talk like that and say: "I am Catholic" because that's not true and the title of the book is really irresponsable. If you don't like being Catholic, or you don't want to, or you want to do with your body whatever you want to, that's fine, go ahead, it's up to you, BUT please, dont make fun of being Catholic or don't ridiculize the teachings of the Church because out there are some people that really believes and lives these teachings. And there's something called RESPECT. The Word of Jesus is life and whoever believes in this Word and also lives according to this Word, is going to live the real plenitude of life. This include all aspects in his/her life including sexuality. If you want to have a better understand of human sexuality and live it fully, I recommend you "Theology of the body for beginners" by Christopher West. This book has changed for better the lives of many, many people. You can get it here in Amazon for less than 10 bucks. Try it ! It's worth it!!!
How did they get this book published? You can have mine for free. .......2005-11-05
I read the mixed reviews of this book but decided to try it anyway because of the catchy title. Wrong. I give it a 0 stars. The book was almost embarassing to read - the authors try so hard to be funny and witty but they come across as vapid, silly women trying to make a buck by maligning their own religion. It was awkard, like sitting in front of someone telling bad jokes.
I am Episcopal so I do not share the indignation that the Catholic reviewers felt. However, this book was boring, the authors tried to hard and did I say boring?
Ms. Anderson needs a new occupation. Wonder what her parents think of this book? And,how did it ever get published?

Practical Guide for writing for Film.......2001-06-21
Aspects of the Screenplay: Techniques of Screenwriting by Mark Axelrod (Heinemann) Storyline may sell the script, but dialogue and structure will carry it off. Aspects of the Screenplay deals extensively with film dialogue: how best to write it and still address issues of structure, plot, and character. It is one of the first books to focus on the craft of dialogue writing, offering invaluable advice that will encourage you to sit down and want to write. Just as there is more than one way to write a script, there is more than one way to write a "how to write a script" book. Axelrod begins where every book on screenwriting should begin, with Aristotle's Poetics, and finishes where every book should end, with notes about the business. Throughout the text, he offers as examples some of the bestknown screenplays in recent years, including Rocky; The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover; Rain Man; Citizen Kane; The Big Chill; Ordinary People; Breaking Away; Four Weddings and a Funeral; Romancing the Stone; The Name of the Rose; The Fisher King; One Flew Over the Cuchoo's Nest; The Graduate; and Pulp Fiction. Mark Axelrod is a professor of comparative literature at Chapman University and director of The John Fowles Center for Creative Writing. A twotime recipient of a United Kingdom Leverhulme Fellowship for creative writing, he is a practicing screenwriter, whose work has been recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; The Writers Guild of America, East; the Screenwriters Forum (University of Wisconsin); and the Sundance Institute

Great for learning or a little reminder.......2006-02-10
This book offers great little tidbits of information about common sales mistakes. It has truly improved my closing ratio. This is a great book to pull out every once in awhile when you need a boost. Sometimes it is hard to break a habit and easy to slip into an old routine.
Practical-Usable advice.......2005-09-27
This is back to the basics, but these basics will make or break you as in sales. A very good guide to keep on your shelf to re-read yearly and to pass on to sales personnel who seem to be floundering.
A great back to the basics book .......2005-03-16
"Schiffman has done it again. A great back to the basics book, this should be a must read for all salespeople--new and experienced."
Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-09
Stephan Schiffman, the famous master of cold calls and sales techniques, provides bite-sized tips on correcting common sales problems. He uses the same nuggets-of-advice format as in many of his other books, such as The Most Common Sales Habits of Highly Successful Salespeople, and the formula is a winner for him. His advice may sound fairly familiar, and much of it echoes his other books, though the concept that you can error-proof your sales approach is a dandy new angle. The advice is sound and is soundly given. Schiffman presents a short, brisk directory of 25 goofs to avoid and ways to fix up your sales approach in this easy-to-read booster. Maybe the simplicity and accessibility of his step by step approach explains why titles based on 10 of this or 25 of that are so popular - just as we suspect this spiffy countdown will be as well.
The first mistake is buying this book!.......2001-03-10
I read this book with the expectation that I might learn something new or learn it in a new way. I found the matieral unimpressive in comparision to other work on sales i.e. Brian Tracy or Zig Ziggler. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!
