Unique perspective, well-written, fascinating pictures.......2007-05-16

It is a rare opportunity to see how people dressed in reality so far in the past. Fashion plates show the garment in its perfect form, portraits are idealized, and original illustrations change the proportions, whether purposefully or not, to fit the times of the artist, not that of the garment.

The pictures feature a range of people from different walks of life in different situations, and the reader can enjoy seeing these ordinary people in their clothes, whether dressed to impress or caught looking somewhat odd in ill-fitting garments or clothes that have crooked seams--the details are so telling!

The text dissects the pictures and explains costume of the era in detail, discussing the general trends, exceptions, class distinctions, and how the people in these old photos relate to all this. A Very good book for a costume historian.

Really real fashion.......2007-05-14

Dressed for the Photographer has a wealth of beautiful images, and has informative and interesting text with each image. Both text and images show the realities of fashion during the era covered. We see how real people dressed, rather than fashion templates which were always more extreme version of the latest fashion.

I liked the descriptions of dresses remade from older dresses to keep up with fashion, as well as her description of how one can tell the dress has been altered. I also enjoyed the way she pointed out little details of outfits. I never would have seen those details otherwise.

I would have preferred a few more examples of upper-class women throughout the eras and middle-class women in the latter part of the 20th century. The reform dress was an interesting movement, but I believe the reform dresses are over-represented. But, overall, the book reflects the diversity of the people in the society very well.

To be honest, I haven't seen a better resource for someone who wants to know what people really wore from 1840-1900.

An Indispensable Resouce.......2006-11-13

As a researcher period clothing and producer of reproduction clothing, I find this book is a fabulous resource! Not only is there a wide scope of social backgrounds represented here, but the accompanying writings are an additional insight to the people on those pages. A great work!

Full of detailed information on fashion.......2006-07-11

I purchased this book because my business, PhotoMD.net, is digital restoration of old photos and documents. I wanted to be able to recognize, with some degree of accuracy, the relative time period of some of the older photos I work on, although that's not necessary as part of my job.

The author has an amazing eye for detail - I find I read over the commentary and look back and forth from the photo to the text repeatedly on each photo to fully understand/recognize what is being discussed. Although there is a wide range of classes presented, there is a strong bias towards portraits of the wealthy... no doubt because they could afford portrait photographs and the fashionable clothing to wear in them and the poor could not, making it far easier to find their photos for such a project. Consequently, though, the book is not as helpful to me for pinpointing dates in assorted photos of what I'd call 'ordinary' people as I'd hoped. 'Ordinary' to the author seems to be 'not a model'. I thought it would be far more photos of middle and lower class people. 'Fashion' quite literally means couture, and not simply what 'most' people were wearing, which is what I misunderstood the descriptions to indicate.

That said, the information offered here, for anyone with a strong general interest in the history of American fashion, is comprehensive, fascinating and well presented. I am still glad I purchased this book.

One of the best entries to the field in recent years........2006-01-25

One of the biggest problems in working with costume is the lack of dated, identified examples. Too many so-called experts use unidentified, undated photographs in an attempt to explain the past. Severa does not fall into that trap. In a large number of cases, she hangs her hypothesis on dated and/or located examples. This enables her to suggest how quickly or slowly someone at a certain income level might change dress due to fashion. It also enables discussion of regional differences. The result is a superb reference tool for discussion of American costume. It is expensive, but worth the investment if you are seriously involved in some aspect of historical costume.

The stage was set in G.I. Joe Union of the Snake, and now in G.I. Joe: Rise of the Red Shadows, Devil's Due has followed up with perhaps the most significant Joe storyline in years as the team is shaken to its very core with the events in this book. We've seen agents of both the Joe team and Cobra targeted by a shadowy new organization called The Red Shadows. For years the group has sat quietly, waiting and planning a devastating attack against both groups to not only eliminate, but discredit them as well. The fanatical group is led by the charismatic Wilder Vaughn, a former British special OPS member who the Brits insisted was dead. The Red Shadows seek no less than to establish a "new world order" (a term we've heard often) with the destruction of established world governments, religions, militaries, and even financial institutions. The Red Shadows are as much a cult as they are a covert team of soldiers, remarkably staying two jumps ahead of the Joe team.

Meanwhile all is not going well with the Joes and their new commander General Rey. The Joe team is still under investigation by the government after the events in Union of the Snake. Add to that, their former puppet masters "The Jugglers" are assassinated and a mole within their group has wiped their computer systems clean. Rise of the Red Shadows reprints the double-sized issues numbers 42 & 43 of the G.I. Joe series. In fact Devil's Due considers the story so monumental that issue #43 would be the last of the series. The company then launched their new title G.I. Joe: America's Elite with an issue #0 last year, picking up the story one year after the events in Rise of the Red Shadows. Long time fans may no doubt be shocked at the events in the book but as pointed out in the issue's commentary, the book had become perhaps too safe. While the Devil's Due version was far edgier than when the title was at Marvel, there was still the prevailing feeling that the main characters would always be safe. Clearly Devil's Due is saying this isn't your father's G.I. Joe anymore. Real world threats come with real world consequences and tragedies. Devil's Due continues to take the Joe Team in a dynamic new direction!

i read some of the reviews...and if you are looking for meaningful insight into the plight of black women..the title of this book should have tell you that is not going to be the case. however, if you want a lighthearted yet truthful commentary on being an angry black woman (or angry white woman)..than this is the book for you. this book was a gift from my girflriends in my dance group..half of whome are white and i really enjoyed it...and no i wasn't offended..i'm an ABW and proud of it! i found it hysterically funny because i was able to relate ..and even the things i had not personally experienced i certainly know someone who has. (the chapter about children was especially funny...i saw alot of my mother in that) **you probably shouldn't read this on the train or in any public place like i did...cuz i did look just a little crazy laughing as hard as i was while reading it**
bottom line..if you want deep insight on the plight of the black race try W.E.B DuBois or Marcus Garvey or Michael Eric Dyson.

Tell It Like It Is.......2005-08-22

Denene, Angela, & Mitiz have come together and presented a book that every woman can say Amen to. These three ladies take a look at the many generations of black woman who have truly impacted the lives of black and white woman of today. The authors of "The Angry Black Woman's Guides To Life", breaks down to the reader what it's like to be an angry black woman (A.B.W) and what it takes to keep an A.B.W. happy. The ladies go as far as to discuss our Caucasian sisters - the angry white woman (A.W.W) explaining how these sisters can represent like any A.B.W. Not only do they explain what it takes to be an A.W.W. and A.B.W. they also tell you about some famous ABW & AWW of our own generation and the generations before us.

The authors of this book have put together an exceptionally well thought book that encourages woman of all races. This book is an excellent read for anyone trying to figure out any woman.

A very good primer on strategy............2006-01-03

It never ceases to amaze me why so many are so quick to trash Alburt's Comprehensive Chess series. I studied this book Chess Strategy as well as the rest in the series awile ago. I can say without a doubt they helped me establish a very firm foundation in chess. It was through the knowledge in these books that I was able to progress to more advanced works & actually understand these advanced concepts!

So many put the cart before the horse in these days of 'instant gratfication.' If you are below 2200 & are reading works by Dvoretsky, Nimzovitch, Yussopv, etc. you are wasting your time! To reap the full rewards of the above mentioned authors you must have a very solid chess foundation! ALburt's Comprehensive Chess Series provides this foundation! These books are meant to be studied & not breezed through in a few weeks....digest them! Some say Alburt's books are too simplistic.....well they are meant to be this way so as to be undestood by many. This in no way detracts from the valuable information therein though!

After finishing the Comprehensive Chess Course my USCF rating shot up to 1925. I then purchased some other works by Euwe, Marovic, & Chernev. I studied these works and broke the 2000 barrier. Once I was here I started to pour over opening theory & understand it easily enough....this lead me to my current rating of 2110. So as it relates to me I did not need a 100+ book chess library to attain this level of play. Again this is because of a solid foundation provided by ALburt's series of books! If there is one important lesson I learned myself by reading this series it is the importance of developing an organized & sound thinking technique! This is something the student must aquire on his own & one can learn it by studying Alburt's series!

Close to Worthless.......2005-05-09

Like the previous two books in the Comprehensive Chess Course series, this book gives the impression of having been slapped together in a weekend.

The selection of ideas (good vs bad bishop, weak and strong squares, etc) is mundane. This book adds nothing in that area. Reshevsky's Art of Positional Play is much better.

The selection of games and positions to illustrate these ideas is also particularly uninspired. Pachman's Complete Chess Strategy does a much better job selecting material.

The lack of commentarty and analysis borders on the obscene for a book that claims it will help me become a master. I've given games of speed chess more thorough analysis than this. Where the analysis seems particularly educational and/or thorough, you can be sure it is merely a recompilation of previously published analysis. As just a couple (of many) examples, the analysis of Botvinnik-Boleslavsky (p182) comes from Botvinnik's 100 Selected Games, and the analysis of Tarrasch-Lasker (p217) comes from Reti.

Worst of all, analysis from earlier sources is uncritically poached without the slightest attempt at verification. For example, the analysis of MilnerBarry-ZnoskoBorovsky (p182) is taken from Euwe's Judgment & Planning in Chess. In that book, Euwe ends with "if 24....fxe5, White plays 25.Qg6 Bf6 the game is decided by the invasion of the rooks by means of 26. Rfc1 with the idea of 27.Rc7." Alburt & Palatnik copy this sentence almost verbatim. What Euwe missed (and Alburt & Palatnik didn't even bother to look for) is that Black has 26....e4 27.Rc7 Qxd4+ as a perfectly good defense and White is down a bishop for nothing.

You will learn nothing from this book; save your money.

Just ok.......2004-09-29

I think this book does an ok job covering a variety of strategies designed to make you play stronger in tournaments. This is part of a series of books with mainly Lev Albert behind them using his Russian School of Chess Methods. These methods need to be improved on to fit into today's world.
It doesn't begin to compair to "Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors", which was recently released.

Better than his first books.......2004-02-28

The least I can say is that this book is better than his first two books in the author's series, which I didn't like because it was designed for a teacher who didn't know chess to be able to go through it and teach the Russian masses.
I would say this book is ok, but there are really no secrets as you are lead to believe.

Accessable to the intermediate player........2002-03-05

I really improved after reading this book. I read this book on a plane ride to California (from Buffalo) and during my trip (4 days). I finished it a couple days after returning (about a week and a half total on the book).

I did not have a board, but I visualized the board from the diagram as there were enough for me to do so. I enjoyed the examples and thought they were very useful in teaching the material.

In any case, a couple weeks later, I won the Under 1600 section of the New York State Chess Championship. I'm not saying that this book was the only reason for doing this, but I learned much and was inspired by the positional play in all of the examples I read.

My only criticism is that there wasn't enough analysis behind some of the moves where the author makes a statement such as "and of course move x was terrible" and doesn't explain it. However, in my specific case, this was good, as I couldn't really analyze too many variations anyway, and instead was able to get the ideas behind the strategies explained.

I highly recommend this book as well as "Chess Tactics for the tournament Player" by the same author.

Good book with several useful chapters.......2005-08-22

VERY good book. Alexei Kosikov's article, "Assessing a Position and Choosing a Plan in the Middlegame", is itself worth the price of admission. If only he wrote entire books himself!

I have several of Dvoretsky's books (of course, having them is not the same as having read them), and have found this to be the best of those I have read. It is very readable, with several articles, which are inter-related, but do not require each other. That is, you can pick and choose which articles interest you.

Great book for all levels.......2005-06-10

This is a great book not only does it show you key ways to improve but also uses great examples.
The first element it describes is understanding the your weaknesses and eliminating or minimalising them. Are you too cautious, attack too much, lack positional or calculative powers?
The second element is games from the past, it explains why these can still be used, great masters of the past were able to better exploit and implement their plans (Defensive technique by the weaker player was not as developed as today) therefore you get to see the whole implementation of the plan. What are these plans? minority Attack, Attack on F2, Queen side pawn majority, isolated pawn the list goes on.
Also discussed is keeping a scrap book of key positions you come across as an aide memoir.
Finally the 3rd element is annotating your own games. By annoting your own games you see first hand where you went wrong this may indicate a weakness to work on and therefore work on your identified weakness will lead to improvement in practical playing strength.

Useful Ideas.......2000-11-13

The book is basically a manual on how to asess your own chess and begin to cover up weaknesses and promote strengths. Emphasising the need for unviversality of style (covering weaknesses) it advocates a method of analysing the individuals games to come up with ways of strengthening openings, psychology and analysis at the board.

Practical endgames analysed in depth.......2005-04-25

This book essentially consists of a series of endgames analysed in depth. For the most part the examples are taken from practical play or from other endgame books. The author has discovered some flaws in the analysis of some endgames in other books, in special in Fine`s work "Basic Chess Endings". (See my review of the edition revised by P. Benko of this book).

As the author says in the preface, it is almost impossible in chess analysis of any kind to avoid some errors. In this respect I discovered a hole and omission in the analysis of the Steinitz-Gunsberg endgame (9th match game for the world title, 1890, page 49, diagram 65 of the 3rd revised edition). This endgame is evaluated as a win for black. In fact, it is a draw. If 3.Kh6 g5, instead of the losing 4.hg? white plays the extremely unobvious 4.Ra3! or 4.Ra8! and draws. The correct evaluation of this endgame (attributed to I. Zaitsev) appeared in the revised (by J.Estrin and I. Romanow) german edition (Schachverlag Rudi Schmaus, 1985, page 11) of the Levenfish and Smyslov book on rook endgames. I checked the correctness of Zaitsev's move Ra3! with the aid of Fritz and the Nalimov tablebases. In the process, I discovered the dual solution Ra8!. I contacted the author directly on ICC (Internet Chess Club). He was *very* responsive and he agreed with the previous analysis. He was not aware that the correct analysis had already been published. However, this omission is forgivable because the (rare) german edition of Levenfish's and Smyslov's work is probably the only with updated analysis and the author consulted only the english edition.

I highly recommend this book for the intermediated to advanced player trying to improve her endgame play. It is a pity that this book is now out of print. Maybe it is time for a new updated edition! In the meantime, it would be useful for users of previous editions if Batsford and the author would maintain a webpage with updated analysis. In this case, the book would deserve 5 stars.

Excellent explanation of system, not just moves!.......1998-06-01

Glenn Flear has provided the reader with all the information necessary to master the basic Slav. While more recent books are available, GM Flear's book remains topical because he includes complete games with explanations of plans. He does not really discuss the popular ...a6 lines (this was published before a6 was really tested), but his comments will help players who face the main lines from either side. I was especially impressed with his chapter on the Exchange Slav and various anti-Slav variations. This is an excellent example of how to write a good opening book!

I've listened to these CD's more than once while driving. There are lots of great tips - and a couple opened my eyes to some areas where I had been stuck. Not every point was new to me. I have recommended it to others and shared some of the individual points with friends.

If you are a reader on leadership, Steve Chandler is not stranger to you. In "100 ways to motivate others:", he condenses several years worth of work into a handbook for the new generation of leader.
Do not be confused by the fact that the book is not large. Steve has crammed years worth of fundamental truths about motivation and management into a compact tome.
The hardest part of using these techniques is making the initial leap of faith that these steps actually work. And they do work. If you buy a book on motivation or leadership this year, it must be this book.

Chock Full of Easy to Implement Gems.......2006-01-15

Steve Chandler and Scott Richardson are no strangers to helping people become better leaders - these tips are the result of many seminars and books they have done in the past. The book is able to give many real life examples from those seminars of situations in which these suggestions really made a difference.

While other management books drone on and on for long chapters, often losing sight of the aim, this book is very straightforward. 100 separate tips. Each tip is short, concise, but immediately useful. Try reading just one tip each day. Put a post-it on your monitor, reminding you to think about it. Find ways to apply it. Like anything else in life, you'll find some tips that don't really apply to you - but others that are amazingly helpful. As you collect those helpful tips, you can really find your work environment becoming more and more smooth.

Many things in here are things you know - but you never practice because you're just too busy or frustrated. For example, the book says to focus on one thing at a time. We know that when you focus on something, you tend to do well. But in modern offices, you have your email beeping, your phone ringing, people stopping by, and more. You try to multitask. Usually this somehow gives you the sense that you're achieving more - but in reality nothing is done as well, and people that you interact with feel short changed. A key message here is to slow down, focus, organize your priority list and really take care of issues. You feel much more relaxed at the end of the day, the people you work with feel like you really paid attention to their issues, and often you get far more done.

One issue I had with the book is they gloss over some issues. In a few tips on time management, for example, they talk about how everybody in the world only has 24 hours in a day and it's silly to complain you don't have enough time for your workload. I'm not sure what THEIR workload is like, but at my job, there honestly is NOT enough time in a given day to do all the tasks I need to do. In essence I need to find more people to help me, and to take on some of those tasks so I actually have a good match between what needs to be done and how many hours I can stay awake. It would have been nice if they'd talked about that, vs making it seem like this couldn't be a problem.

That being said, the book really does have quite a number of gems in it, and is well worth reading multiple times.

Straightforward nuggets of motivational advice.......2005-10-21

Authors Steve Chandler and Scott Richardson prove that sometimes the simplest ideas make the most sense. Residents of the corporate world will identify with their observations and, in most cases, will agree with their recommendations. The book moves along rapidly, is loaded with inspirational gems and may encourage leaders to rethink their managerial style. One curveball: if you have trouble relating to sports analogies, look out - this book is full of them. Despite this, the authors succinctly explain 100 straightforward nuggets of motivational advice in short chapters laced with pithy quotes. These techniques must be applied, not just conceptualized. As the authors warn skeptics, practice makes perfect. We believe that managers or executives interested in getting the best out of their employees - particularly by helping them feel self-motivated - would be wise to invest an evening with this book (and you'll find some dandy motivational quotes to use in your next meeting).
