excellent work.......2007-08-23
Bruce Webber is the best photographer there is. Each picture makes you want to take the time to apriciate his work.
Master of his art.......2006-12-23
Bruce is the master of two dimensional space. As always, interesting and provocative.
A Coffee table book of mammoth magnitude..........2006-11-10
An amazing Bruce Weber portfolio and everything a good coffee table book should be. It's size is amazing pound for pound and filled to the brim with Bruce's ad campaigns for Versace, Abercrombie & Fitch, endless fashionista mags as well as a plethora of portraits. Quite a treat for the eyes for no one takes a picture like Bruce Weber. Never have I seen a photographer who can capture the ultimate essence of beautiful youth like this man. Indulge yourself with this one...
positively excellent.......2006-11-10
Probably the best photo book I have ever seen. Excellent quality and one to keep for life. In the Netherlands it would cost be 150. Bij Amazon just a little over 80.
BEYOND WACK.......2006-01-03
You have got to be kidding me. This stuff was tacky when it ran in magazines... so now a book of it? Whatev... not to mention the horribly CHEAPO paper and way crummy binding. What was the guy thinking? Filthy lucre, I suppose. Three to six months until it hits the remainder table. A better subtitle might have been, "How I Stopped Worrying About What a Decent Book Should Be". Save yourself the bread.

There's a lot of action in GARFIELD's life. It just happens to revolve around the refrigerator! So whether he's reviewing the list of things he's not going to do today, testing the first law of physics--"Bodies at rest tend to stay at rest"--or challenging Odie to a do-nothing contest, you can be sure that when mealtime comes, GARFIELD will have all the energy he needs!

Tons and Tons of Fun.......2006-11-03
Great reading. Perfect for a relax after a stressful day at work
Garfield strikes again.......2005-08-10
Without a doubt, he's the coolest cat out there in comics. With his crazy insane appetite, his total love for Odie (kidding) and attacking the mailman on a regular basis. This is one that wont disappoint, but again this is Garfield so its hard to do that anyways. Love having 3 books together in one pack, it just goes to show. Even after all these years his comics are as funny as ever.
Excellent!.......2005-07-28
The service was excellent! The books were shipped quickly, and the condition was excellent. My son just became interested in Garfield, and he reads and re-reads these books. It keeps us both happy that he is reading, and keeping his skills up, and he enjoys the material. I'll be back again for future purchases!
garfield jokes.......2002-07-27

Film Fatales comprises 33 interview-based profiles of women in independent film. Most of those included are directors, but there are also three distributors and a producer; more than half of the women are lesbians. Filmmaker Judith Redding and writer Victoria Brownworth (Too Queer: Essays from a Radical Life) are interested in showing how diverse women's filmmaking is. The book is divided into sections on documentary, narrative, and experimental film, and includes not only North Americans and Europeans but also a number of women from the filmmaking capital of the world: India. The type of work examined ranges from films with titles such as Superdyke and Women I Love by the goddess of experimental queer film, Barbara Hammer, to more mainstream movies such as Jane Campion's The Piano and Marleen Gorris's Antonia's Line. For those who prefer to view films from the comfort of their homes, the filmography at the back of the book has a handy listing of what's available on home video.
Book Description
Film Fatales offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives and work of women filmmakers. Profiled here are over thirty pioneering directors, producers, and distributors who have changed the face of contemporary film by delivering new and distinctly female images and sensibilities for the screen.

REVIEW AS PUBLISHED IN IDFA MAGAZINE AMSTERDAM.......1998-01-26
AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LENS
33 Female filmmakers portrayed and asked about their experiences in the film profession, which has been dominated by men for so long.
By Rob van Scheers
Towards the end of the film centennial women have managed to take up a position at the other side of the lens: no longer on screen only as actresses, but behind the camera, calling the shots. This generation in the post-feminist era is the subject of the book 'Film Fatales: Independent Women Directors'. Subdivided into four thematic sections (Documentary Film; Experimental Film; Narrative Film; Beyond the Director's Chair), the book has a pleasant, internationally oriented scope, also making it a crash course in 'female filmmakers from all corners of the world'.
Most people are more or less familiar with successful directors like Susan Seidelman (US), Mira Nair (India), Jane Campion (New Zealand), Marleen Gorris (the Netherlands) and Patricia Rozema (Canada). Other faces are introduced by Judith M. Redding and Victoria A. Brownworth for the first time to an audience which exceeds the specialised in-crowd. Because it is almost always interesting to listen to craftspeople talking passionately about their profession, the relative obscurity of a number of them is not necessarily a drawback in this volume.
PRAGMATIC
Because of the context of the book, the reader obviously starts looking for the female filmmakers'shared experiences, other than the perpetual budgetary problems that are generally applicable to the independent film scene. (`When does a documentary filmmaker know that she is in Hollywood?' the American filmmaker Jessica Lu asked rhetorically, when she was there in 1996 to pick up an Academy Award for her film `Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien'. The answer: `When her dress is more expensive than her film.') But just as a book about female authors or female (pop) musicians would result in a pandemonium of opinions, the female directors, both thematically and stylistically, appear to aim for a wide diversity. A sign of maturity, I would say, because unlike in the seventies, the filmmakers are no longer judged by the politically correct content of their utterances (and fortunately they are not steered in that direction by the interviewers).
The pioneer work is largely behind them. `It's a good thing I was as naive as I was when I started,' Susan Seidelman (maker of films like `Smithereens', `Desperately Seeking Susan' and `She-Devil') says looking back. `I didn't realize how few women directors there were, how hard it was for women to do what men had been doing for years. (-) The good thing for me about the women's movement was I just thought I could do it, just go out and direct.' This is how pragmatic most of the filmmakers in this book turn out to be, an approach which has led to many a priceless piece of work in the past two decades.
FEMALE LENS?
Therefore, when reading this book, it is not easy to answer the question whether there is something like `the female lens'. In her commercially not very successful film `Grace of My Heart' (1996), highly appreciated by music lovers, Allison Anders told the dramatised life story of songwriter Carole King. It is not a `women's film' by definition: it recounts an episode from the history of popular culture, with an extraordinarily talented woman as the main character. That female directors would like to approach eroticism on the screen differently from their male counterparts is neither a conclusion that can be drawn on the basis of this book: Lizzie Borden (of films like `Born In Flames', `Working Girls' and `Let's Talk About Sex') perceives a `very anti-sexual time' in our juncture, that goes beyond the fear of AIDS, and that has monopolised Hollywood. Her ambition: `What I really want to do is show an erection on screen - to actually show a man getting an erection. That is something you never see, even in pornography. An erection has been used as an instrument of brutality toward women in movies - I'd like to turn that around - show it as sexual desire.' Other female directors (Mira Nair, Lourdes Portillo or Julie Dash) rather present ethnicity as their main theme, taking for granted relationships between men and men, women and women and women and men.
THE FIRST ACADEMY AWARD
Seen in this light, the fact that Dutch Marleen Gorris managed to acquire an Academy Award in 1996 as the first female director with `Antonia' (American title: `Antonia's Line', awarded in the category `Best Foreign Language Film') must have been both encouraging and alarming. In many ways, `Antonia' was pervaded with a typical `seventies-women's-film' atmosphere, which is precisely the tone most younger female directors want to abandon. But it is true: to win the prize was a milestone. Because: of all the male film bastions ever to be demolished, Hollywood, long after the documentary world and the independent film, is the final headquarters that has to 'come round'. Judging from the extent of passion exposed in 'Film Fatales', this can only be a matter of time.
Rob van Scheers is author of 'PAUL VERHOEVEN' - the biography on the Dutch filmmaker, published by Faber&Faber in november 1997

Mel Bay's First Lessons Blues Harmonica.......2007-03-25
I too have Gindicks book which is a good book. But I got the impression that he thinks that everyone has the ability to improvise and bend the 2 hole draw. This book is just awsome. I recieved this book in the mail on 3/23/07 and already can play along with the book and starting to understand 12 bar blues. Which I've struggled with since first starting to play 3mnths ago. If your a newbie or intermediate buy this book.
Excellent book.......2007-01-04
I have used Gindick's books as well and this book is simple and straight to the point. It doesn't obsess on using a blues bending of the #2 hole. The guy teaches you how to play using normal blows & draws. I would recommend it to anyone starting out. Use Gindicks books once your ready to advance to adding a bluesy sound to your harp.
I can play the blues! Finally!.......2004-08-17
I've followed the classic routes of Jon Gindick and Jerry Portnoy blues harmonica material. I say classic in that everywhere I read online, people pointed at these. In the end, they made me feel like I was going to end up a straight harp player the rest of my life. Portnoy's 3-CD set focuses exclusively on technique, while Jon assumes that the reader has some comfort in 'playing what you feel'. I learned a number of Jon's licks, but had no comfort in playing them alongside a jam-track. My gut would sting everytime he we would play and I had no idea what he was doing on the "Rock-and-Blues Harmonica" CD.
Finally, I think I have the right book in front of me. I just ordered a whole 'beginners set' from Harmonica MasterClass. I've only started on "First Lessons Blues Harmonica Book/CD", but wow! Dave Barrett skips right to playing along with 12-bar segments, even avoiding 2-draws at first to make it easy on real beginners. Playing along with these segments is fun...I'm actually moving with the beat and sensing when I should come in. The instruction material is almost spartan, but he makes what you are supposed to do clear (unlike the Instant Piano guy on PBS that takes half an hour to get to the revelation that the left hand plays chords and the right plays the melody).
The lessons expain different phrasing styles of blues, giving some structure to learn how to jam later on. And the lessons do get more complicated, but they don't look hard. The fact is that they are lessons, that you can jump right in and practice with, and so I've found a new commitment to really practice, not just noodle.
Included is music, not just 'tab', which makes following the timing so much easier (especially important to keep track of the 12-bar progression).
It finally ends with a whole song to jam thru, given all the notes to play. Being able to play this song is a goal for me, a mark of achievement, something those other guys aparently don't understand is important to a beginner.
If I can just help one other person like myself, all this typing will have been worth it.

Book Description
Until now, there has never been a book to help public fund managers direct fixed-income portfolios while simultaneously balancing politics, or the need to preserve principal, with economics, or the need to optimize income. The Politics of Public Fund Investing approaches public fund management from the lay perspective, providing much-needed guidance to modify Wall Street strategies to serve the needs of Main Street.
If you manage a public fund, if you are an elected official, or if you oversee a portfolio for a foundation or an endowment, you know the traditional money management strategy used every day on Wall Street doesn't necessarily apply to your situation. For you, investing isn't simply about economics. Wall Street strategies do not take into account election cycles, political risk factors, or the unique performance assessments public funds must undergo. When Wall Street builds a portfolio, it doesn't need to consider the opinions and desires of a wide variety of constituents, and the management of the portfolio's performance doesn't carry the same level of career risk.
This groundbreaking book is the first resource ever available to the stewards of public fund investing entrusted with the responsibility to make financial decisions in this unique environment. The Politics of Public Fund Investing shows readers how to evaluate and measure their funds' performance through specific techniques, standards, and procedures. It begins by addressing the key differences between Wall Street and Main Street, explaining which methods of Wall Street are unsuited to public fund management and why. The book provides a framework for moving from a static investment policy to a dynamic investment plan, making the important distinction between what is "legal" in terms of policy and what is "suitable" in terms of the objectives of the stakeholders. The book goes on to propose exceptional and beneficial insights into appraising a fund's performance along with providing a four-step process to build a politically correct portfolio. Finally, it shows how to be safe and optimize income within the constraints of acceptable risk.
Based on years of experience and invaluable research, The Politics of Public Fund Investing is an innovative, compelling, and much-needed guide to navigating the complex territory where the political environment meets public investing.

A guide written especially for public fund managers directing fixed-income portfolios.......2006-08-07
The Politics Of Public Fund Investing: How To Modify Wall Street To Fit Main Street by Ben Finkelstein (Senior Managing Director of Public Funds for Stanford Group Company) is a guide written especially for public fund managers directing fixed-income portfolios, all the while balancing political/ethical considerations with economic/financial ones. Chapters cover how to optimize income and minimize risk; how to align one's portfolio so that it does not violate one's politics; how to profit from losses; callable securities and public fund analytics; and much more. A glossary and index round out this no-nonsense guide especially recommended for novice to intermediate investors.
Super Book!.......2006-03-29
This is a one-of-a-kind book for individuals who manage investment portfolios for state and local governments. Ben's insight on the vast difference between "Main Street" portfolio management and Wall Street way is right on the mark. The book helps government investment professionals communicate important information to their governing boards. It conveys that the return of principal is more important than the return on principal. This is a must read for the thousands of government treasury professionals.
I VOTE........2006-03-01
Although I admittedly lack a career in politics or a keen understanding of investment strategy, I found this book surprisingly compelling, readable, and relevant. Irrespective of one's professional affiliations, Mr. Finkelstein's revolutionary ideas are highly pertinent to all voters and thoughtful individuals seeking to gain a clearer understanding of how their tax dollars are managed and invested. I highly recommend this book, The Politics of Public Funds.
