    Book Description

An exquisite celebration of the latest fashion sensation: the perennially popular charm.

Since time immemorial charms have been worn as symbols of the eternal themes of love, luck, and protection. Whether in the form of Ancient Egyptian scarabs or Chinese tortoises, talismans against the Evil Eye or heart-shaped lockets, horseshoe pendants on necklaces or miniature coins dangling from gold chains, charms exude a kind of magic.

Figures from the worlds of Hollywood, royalty, and fashion have long been seduced by the appeal of charms. Lauren Bacall, Grace Kelly, the Duchess of Windsor, and Coco Chanel were all devoted to them, and Marlene Dietrich never traveled without hers. Today glamorous celebrities and style icons can be seen wearing these unique personal mementos: Anna Sui wears hers on an anklet, Sarah Jessica Parker wears hers on a sweetie bracelet, Matthew Williamson weaves his into his fashion designs, and Mariah Carey even named an album Charmbracelet.

We in the twenty-first century have rediscovered the timeless allure of charm jewelry, whether in the shape of shamrocks or stars, whether made from cowrie shells or precious stones. This book, containing a host of memorable anecdotes and historical facts, together with a hundred color illustrations, is the perfect celebration of the charm of charms. 111 illustrations, 106 in color.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-02

I love charms and charm bracelets but this book was so disappointing to me. There were some interesting facts but, overall, it was just too much celebrity worship for me (although the photos of Grace Kelly and Helena Rubenstein were wonderful)and not enough passion about the subject they were supposed to be addressing. I realize the co-author, John Ayton, is the co-owner - with his wife - of Links of London but this book was so much payola for his own business. If you really love charm jewelry skip this book and get "Charmed Bracelets" by Tracey Zabar. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Depicts precisely why charms are so magical!.......2006-04-06

I like the perspective of this little (a charming 6 by 8 1/2 inches) book because the story of charms is told with a host of memorable anecdotes and historical facts beginning with the charm's roots as amulets and talismans. Charming is 109 pages with 108 illustrations depicting charm lovers throughout history and the story of why they coveted their charms. Did you know both Queen Victoria and Marlene Dietrich were buried with their charms?

I have to tell you that my favorite bit in the book was pages 22 and 23 which shows a portrait of Anne Boleyn, the second of King Henry VIII's wives, and a photo of a young Diana Spencer, before she became the Princess of Wales. Both are wearing almost identical initial pendants. There is even something familiar about the pensive looks on their faces. Their royal coincidences makes it feel even spooky!

I've always loved charms and this little book does a wonderful job of conveying why they are so magical to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A coverage of the charm bracelet's jewelry and appeal.......2005-05-13

Fashion history and collector insights alike apply in Charming: The Magic Of Charm Jewelry, a coverage of the charm bracelet's jewelry and appeal over the ages. The journey starts in ancient times, with a review of Egyptian scarabs and Chinese works, to modern times, where a range of shapes and materials mean a wide diversity of charm choices. Color photos accompany an art expose which will prove just as valuable to collectors who want background history to better appreciate the modern charm.

I had been searching for my first copy of Alice in Wonderland for the longest time and finally found this one. This is rather a richly designed edition to the Carroll classic. It comes with a necklace too! Alice in Wonderland is one of the few books that have rarely charmed both children and adult readers. The talents of John Tenniel are amazing. The way he draws those detailed pictures is fabulous. AMAZING! There's an illustrator if you had one. The story is so well written. I read this book to my little brothers who love little Alice. They think it is just so joyful. They like the characters, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts. They think they are so funny. I like little Alice and the Rabbit myself, if you'd ask me. This is such an excellent book. Grab it while ya still can!

A plot summary makes this story sound ordinary by children's literature standards: the summer adventures of four children who discover an enchanted castle and a magic ring. But Edith Nesbit's adored classic (written in 1907) is so much more than the description suggests. Right from the start, the author plays with the idea of magic, teasing us with a sleeping princess who turns out to be a fake. Elsewhere, the magic is "real" as can be--in fact, though written nearly 100 years ago, The Enchanted Castle prefigures the magical realism of modern novels in the matter-of-fact way it weaves the uncanny into the children's everyday life. And, while few authors are confident enough to parody bad writing, Nesbit does it hilariously (and ever so gently) through one character's tendency to "talk like a book": "'To brush his hair and his clothes... was to our hero but the work of a moment,' said Gerald." Things turn scary when the Ugly Wuglies, fake people made from painted cardboard masks, old clothes, and broomsticks, come to life. But on the whole this book about enchantment--much praised by such luminaries as H.G. Wells and Noel Coward--is, simply, enchanting. (Ages 6 and older) --Richard Farr

    Book Description

Afterword by Peter Glassman. "Originally published in 1907, this book concerns four likable English children and their adventures with a magic ring. It's hard to imagine a more appealing showcase for Nesbit's fantasy than this handsome volume....Zelinsky's artwork is as lively as the story and very much of the period....Beautiful."--Booklist. A Books of Wonder Classic.

A short avenue of cypresses led, widening as it went, to a marble terrace that lay broad and white in the sunlight. The children, blinking, leaned their arms on the broad, flat balustrade and gazed. Immediately below them was a lake just like a lake in "The Beauties of Italy" a lake with swans and an island and weeping willows.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Enchanting.......2007-07-20

I really enjoyed reading this book and I consider it to be Edith Nesbit's best work. The children behave like real children and the plot is full of wonderful magic. The story of how the children made an audience for their theater production out of broomsticks and umbrellas is most charming and endearing. And what happens to that audience after the play is wonderful. It is tragic that not many people know of Edith Nesbit's works. They deserve better. All playwrites and screen writers take note. You could do a lot worse than writing a script based on the works of Edith Nesbit, especially the enchanted castle.

3 out of 5 stars THE PRICE OF MAGIC.......2007-06-04

This turn-of-the century children's classic proves a gentle fantasy in the style of her FIVE CHILDREN AND IT. Typical of her fantasy stories these children learn the hard way that wishes are not really free--that sooner or later there is a price to be paid. In this tale three siblings and a neighbor girl (who pretends to be a princess) find themselves relatively free of adult supervision one summer in the English countryside. Obviously the lack of parents and guardians is a critical element for the juvenile protagonists to have the freedom to explore both the physical and magical realms; they quickly realize that no sane adult will take seriously their explanations or narrations of fantastic events.

Gerald, the eldest and a born commander (who imagines himself the hero of a novel which he is writing aloud) leads his sister Kathleen and little brother, Jimmy, on quests of exploration into surreal realms. But it is the acquaintance of Mable, the niece of a housekeeper at a nearby castle, who proves the catalyst for a summer of magic, since it was She who discovered a magic ring amid a secret horde of undreamed of treasure--at least she Claims the ring is magic. Inevitably during the
course of this novel each child Must have a turn to try on the magic ring--with curious, amusing, awkward and even dangerous results. Gerald's
resourcefulness and courage are tested often during 12 long chapters.

As in other Nesbit's fantasies the children soon learn the pitfalls of making thoughtless or unintentional wishes. But all literary children seem destined to learn the price of magic the hard way. Despite the absence of the parents and Mable's aunt there are some adults of interest in the story, adults who have a Past and whose star-crossed paths finally cross in the magic gardens, where stone statues come alive in the moonlight--to be witnessed by special folks only. Related with dainty digs at current affairs and social behavior THE ENCHANTED CASTLE provides is a modest stage for the author to express her personal positions and observations of women's and children's roles in a male-dominated world. Despite the typically Victorian attempts to instill Manners into her young readers E. Nesbit's resulting work offers many moments of unexpected humor. With its homespun quaintness it is arguable how much this book will appeal to 21 century young adults. The entire story is enhanced by the delightful pen-and-ink sketches of H. R. Miller in this Puffin Classics edition.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've come across in some time.......2007-01-04

I found this book in a thrift store last week, and thougt it looked interesting, so I bought. I cannot think of any time I have gotten more for my 75 cents. I was truly amazed at the quality of this book. Mrs. Nesbit has the same magical writing ability as C. S. Lewis. I would not be very surprised if I were to learn that Lewis got some of his ideas for the Narnian Chronicles from this book, as there are many similarities.

This book seemed very much like a book Lewis would have written, though it is lacking his Christian ideas and themes. The characters are amazingly good, as each of the four children has a very unique personality, and it is very interesting to see how each person responds to the situations that arise. I must say that Gerald is one of the best characters in fiction in a very long time. He ranks up there with Mr. Bennet of Pride and Prejudice.

I have encountered very few writers that write truly magical stories. By this I mean that they write stories that somehow feel real. They make an adult feel like a child again while the story lasts. Such authers would be C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Susan Cooper, and newly arrived into my elite group, Edith Nesbit. I am very eager to find more of her work in the hopes that it will be just as good.

    Overall grade: A+

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the world of fantasy.......2006-11-13

A wonderful, fairly innocent adventure involving four children and fantastic imagination. Builds on classics, but reading those first certainly isn't necessary.

This is definitely a read-aloud book for kids with longer attention spans and more extensive vocabulary. Since the book was written in the "proper voice" of a woman of the turn of the 20th Century, the language can get a bit weighty and the vocabulary is certainly more advanced than that used by most of us these days, but we got over it by reading with a bit of a "stuffy attitude." We pretended to be "propah" (imagine an accent there) ladies when we read this aloud.

I read much of it aloud...when I could peel it out of the hands of our 6 year old precocious reader.

The 4-year-old (precocious verbalist) was less enthralled due in large part, I believe, to the vocabulary and style of writing.

4 out of 5 stars The Enchanting Characters.......2005-08-14

In The Enchanted Castle, the author E(dith) Nesbit plays with the boundaries between magic and reality. Three children come upon a castle in one of their exploratory adventures and decide to pretend that it's enchanted. They meet Mabel, the housekeeper's daughter, who pretends she's part of the enchantment - a sleeping princess. However, magic soon subtly takes over and the castle and its grounds really do become enchanted. The children, who at the beginning wished for something out-of-the-ordinary to happen, face situations that include a ring with unpredictable powers, the resurrection of the Ugly Wuglies, and a garden full of mythological statues.

I think what I liked most about this book was the way the characters were drawn. Sometimes in children's literature, you get characters who are almost nothing like real children but in this book, Gerald, Cathy, Jimmy, and Mabel come with both weaknesses and strengths that make them even more interesting than the incidents they confront. I give this book four stars for both writing and enjoyment.

      1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......1999-10-09

This book is 116 pages with a lot of wasted space. Lots of empty pages and illustrations so not much actual information given. We all know that humor helps to reduce stress. I was looking for more practical information I guess. I mean it's O.K. but I didn't really learn anything new here. Sorry

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Practical.......1999-01-13

As a stand-up comic and a person who uses humor in my "real-world" jobs, I found Ms. Jasheway's book to be a fun and practical approach to reducing stress in the workplace. So many people these days complain about the amount of stress in their lives but think the only things they can do to relieve it is to reduce their coffee intake and start working-out. They feel they have to listen to tapes with subliminal messages or practice yoga. Yet nothing reduces the amount of tension we are carrying around like a good laugh. Some people feel that humor has no place on the job, that it means you're goofing off and not working, and yet, as Ms. Jasheway explains, humor frees the mind and body to better do the jobs we have at hand. And unlike so many of the silly tools we are given at work in seminars or workshops, these are skills and tools that we can use anywhere to relieve stress and promote creativity. I highly recomend this book to anybody willing to lighten up a little and have more fun in their lives, both on the job and at home.

        Book Description

Much more than a successful film trilogy, Lord of the Rings has become an unparalleled media phenomenon. Through its impact on regional as well as global industries, and stretching from a British origin over Hollywood to a New Zealand appropriation it has challenged our thinking about the commercial contexts of popular culture. Lord of the Rings: Popular Culture in Global Context brings together leading scholars in the fields of media and film studies to explore the various strategies and implications underlying the global presence of Lord of the Rings. Chapters address how the trilogy has been planned and received as a media business; how it was received by critics and fans, and how spin-offs, franchises, associated media, and indeed the text itself have been affected by its success and appeal. The book covers different national contexts and presents a lively and diverse combination of textual, historical and empirical study.

4 out of 5 stars Guterman's Best Rock & Roll Records... is a very useful book. .......2007-03-13

You can learn a hell of a lot about rock & roll and rock roots music by reading this book and listening to some of the albums Guterman lists here. He takes an interesting slant on the subject, different from that of many other best-of music books that I've read. I would definitely call Guterman a rock purist. He tends to look down on sub-genre's like psychedelic, punk, disco, and rap. The only punk album represented here is by the Clash and rap gets one old school compilation. The psychedelic genre gets nothing; though it's well represented in Guterman`s other book, Worst...Records of All Time.

Although Guterman gives short thrift to rap, many black artists and genres are included. You get a healthy dose of blues, soul, rockers, pop, and reggae. I consider that to be one of the book's greatest strengths. Some best-of books cover black or white artists, but not both. Others, like the Rough Guides, separate black and white music into different books. I don't like segregation on the radio so why should I put up with it in books. Here black artists are linked and compared directly with white artists and given their due, about half the book.

Guterman also does a good job covering the decades. No particular era is over represented; I never got a sense that Guterman preferred one over another. The albums and musicians in this book span the 50s, 60, 70s, & 80s. An appendix in the back lists some records covering music that preceded these decades and influenced rock. As you might have guessed, Guterman is a big country fan.

As a purist, Guterman seems to prefer retro groups and ignore innovators. No Kraftwerk here. But you do get a lot of fun stuff, sleepers by groups like Rockpile and the Morells. These groups were neither popular nor influential, but I sure am glad Guterman let me know about them.

Now that I think about it maybe "Best of..." isn't the best title for this book. Calling a lot of the retro music represented here "Best of..." is like saying the pre-Raphaelite painters were better than the impressionists. But you know that the pre-Raphaelite's put out some charming paintings.

        2 out of 5 stars Guterman's Picks, Not Yours...So Who Cares?.......2001-02-17

My son bought this book a few years ago. Having read Guterman's previous book, "The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time", I was anxious to read it....what a disappointment!

I am an avid collector of music on vinyl, tape, and CD. Like most of us, I buy what I like and don't buy what I don't. Much to my surprise, I found that I owned only about 4 of the records that Guterman raves about. The author picked Rod Stewart's "Every Picture Tells a Story" (a record I've listened to and do not care to own) as the greatest rock album of all time...need I say more? It's more fun to say crass things about bad records than it is to say great things about records you like but which are disliked by others.

If you care what the author thinks...then by all means buy this book. If you feel strongly about the choices you have made, then ignore it because you'll likely come away with a bad opinion of Guterman if he doesn't validate many of your picks.

I give the book two stars mainly because the topic is so subjective that it really doesn't need to be written about. And also because I think Guterman is somewhat pretentious and his taste in music questionable.

2 out of 5 stars Not Too Helpful.......1999-06-23

Not nearly as interesting as "The Worst Rock Records" mainly because singing someone's praises is less interesting than ripping them to shreds. Whereas the "Worst" book was clever, funny, and offered true insight, Gutermann's biases don't work so well here. There's a lot of bootlegs listed to represent the best work of particular artists - Dylan's "Ten of Swords", Elvis's "Burbank Sessions" among them - which is fine for rock completists but not too helpful for the causal fan. Mr. Guterman should go back to slicing and dicing, puffing up isn't his particular skill.

3 out of 5 stars Beware Floyd lovers.......1998-07-28

Don't think that there's everything in here. The author's concept of rock is very limited. Don't expect Hendrix, Zep or Floyd. You get only the roots. And for that, it's a good book.

        Book Description

Emanuel Lasker held the world chess championship longer than any other player in history (1894 to 1921). He competed against such greats as Capablanca, Rubinstein, and Alekhine at the height of their game, and was consistently successful—yet almost no one studies his games today. International Grandmaster Andrew Soltis now rectifies that oversight with a book that takes the full measure of Lasker’s genius. With more than 100 annotated games, this extended look into the thinking of a neglected chess wizard is full of surprises—offering both a much-needed reappraisal of Lasker and a cornucopia of fresh insights for today’s player.

        5 out of 5 stars A monument to Lasker.......2007-04-14

Tal, Alekhine and Korchnoi love(d) him. Fischer, Larsen and Kasparov show considerably less regard. Soltis tries to convince us that the "good doctor" matters. To justify his thesis Soltis firmly believes that the best way is not to tell us, but show us. The 100 games are covered in 320 pages--80 more pages than he devoted to "Bobby Fischer Rediscovered." In his usual style Soltis sets the historical stage for each encounter and highlights those themes and critical points which reveal Lasker qua Lasker: His games are replete with calculated risk-taking, material sacrifices for positional gains, middlegame-to-endgame transitional skill, making the best practical moves, targets, subterfuge, insight into opponent's style, and complicating when the situation merits it.

During this exciting expose of a dynamic and resourceful genius, Soltis dispels some popular myths about Lasker the mesmerist, psychologist, sorcerer--early 20th century pseudo-intellectual nonsense which has clouded Lasker's real legacy. Lasker simply appeared to be ahead of his time and modern players will feel right at home studying his games.

This in my estimation is Soltis' best work, a monument to Lasker.

5 out of 5 stars Of course, Lasker matters!!! Andrew Soltis, you have done a good job!!!.......2007-04-05

I totally agree with another reader's review title. To me, Lasker is one of the three strongest chess champions in the history. The other two are Fischer and Kasparov. I do not use the word greatest as I think in each generation each Chess Champion were the greatest in their days, otherwise they would not be Champions. But why I specifically mention these three? I think it lay on the fact that all champions are genius, but one point is the degree of stress they can withstand makes the 3 mentioned above to stand apart from the other champions. I always imagine that if the past champions re-incarnate, study current theories, like Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik etc, they would still lose to Fischer and Kasparov. The fact is not their chess knowledge and play are worse than Fischer or Kasparov, but they cannot withstand the enormous pressure from these two. As Korchnoi once commented about his chance against Fischer, he said that he was not afraid of Fischer, but only in one or two games, concerning a match, he said he has no chance to survive. This apply to Kasparov' opponents as well. Only I think Lasker can stand against Fischer or Kasparov. One point or the points most of us neglect is that Lasker, besides being a chess champion, he was also a mathematician and philosopher as well. He knew pschology no less than Fischer or Kasparov, in withstanding severe pressure, I conjecture he might be even better than the two. Though I am a fervent fan of Fischer and Kasparov, I still have to disdain their commments on Lasker. Fischer said Lasker was just a coffeehouse player and Kasparov said that the quality of match of Lasker's was poor. No!!! One cannot use today's standard to comment on the past. Otherwise I can laugh at Newton's concept of absolute space and time!!! In fact when I played through Lasker's games, I find them as interesting as Fischer's and Kasparov's games. Take just two examples, one can found a game as wild as the one between Lasker and Pillsbury in the third round of St. Petesburg 1895/1896 and as stategic as the one from Lasker's famous win over the almost invincible Capablanca in St. Petersburg in 1914 using a drawish opening and in fact he absolutely needed a win paradoxically!!. Andew Soltis, you have done a very good job!!

        4 out of 5 stars Worth buying.......2006-04-22

There have been several books already written yet Soltis manages to infuse something new and informative.
I find his comments vastly more interesting than Kasparov's in the chapter on Lasker in his series of previous World Champions.

4 out of 5 stars yes, lasker does matter.......2006-04-21

this is an up-to-date look at laskers greatest games. i was hoping for more of a biographical section but you could tell soltis was just wanting to focus on the games. the analysis is just right, no endless variations but enough to make you make.

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic primer for any investor.......2007-09-17

I have been reading a bit about investing for a decade but still felt I lacked a clear and comprehensive understanding of the previously overwhelming world of money and investing. NO MORE! I have found nothing that compares to the clear, concise and highly readable format of this book. The color coded and cearly defined sections helped me digest the well-organized and very readable material. However, the author's far exceed the abilty of most to clearly and concisely explain the most difficult and complicated of topics. This little book is a gem.
I feel like I've had a brief course in economics and investing and am now able to knowledgably and confidently discuss investing with the most savvy of finanical experts, agents, and those know it alls one often encounters. I will most certainly be looking at other Lighbulb Press materials.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good general intro to investing.......2007-05-02

This book describes the basic ways to invest your money. It covers markets and currency, stocks, bonds, indexes, mutual funds, ETFs, options, futures, and other alternative investments (briefly).

The format is very easy to read - there are lots of diagrams and pictures, which actually provides a good break from the large amount of dense information provided. One thing I liked (but that some may find annoying) is the frequency of repeating definitions. Between various sections, concepts are often defined multiple times. I found this useful, since it reminded me what a certain concept was without having to go back and find it earlier in the book.

In general, the information is pretty accurate and up-to-date. However, I noticed 1 error on the idea of fluctuation in currency value (International Investing in the Money & Markets section, p. 21), which gets the concept of a "strong dollar" during an international equity trade backwards, but then follows with an example diagram that gets it right. I was frankly surprised to see such a glaring mistake. I e-mailed the publishers, but received no response.

Another thing that I didn't like is the fact that, for some numbers in some of the diagrams, there is no mention at how the numbers were calculated/derived. I personally like to see/try all the formulas, so that was slightly annoying. But for the most part, I was able to figure out the formulas myself.

In conclusion, the book does an excellent job introducing various investment opportunities. It covers general information on each investment vehicle and describes the risks associated. It does not, however, teach you any special strategies (other than the obvious "diversify your portfolio" and "use strategies to minimize risk" ones) on investing - this is not the purpose of the book.

While I was initially put off by the brochure-like format and the clip-art-like pictures, I was pleasantly surprised by the content and the ease with which the information was presented. I certainly recommend this as an entry book for someone who does not understand the different ways to invest in various markets.

        Pros:
+ nice introduction to markets and exchanges, and how they are regulated
+ covers all of the important investment vehicles used today
+ lots of useful information - good reference
+ lots of diagrams and pictures to break up the text

        Cons:
        - a few mistakes
        - relatively dense - don't expect to blow through it if you want to retain the information
