Book Description
In Praise of Black Women is a magnificent tribute to women in Africa and the African diaspora from the ancient past to the present. Lavishly illustrated, with text written and selected by the celebrated Guadeloupian novelist Simone Schwarz-Bart, this four-volume series celebrates remarkable women who distinguished themselves in their time and shaped the course of culture and history.
Volume 1: Ancient African Queens weaves together oral tradition, folk legends and stories, songs and poems, historical accounts, and travelers’ tales from Egypt to southern Africa, from prehistory to the nineteenth century. These women rulers, warriors, and heroines include Amanirenas, the queen of Kush who battled Roman armies and defeated them at Aswan; Daurama, mother of the seven Hausa kingdoms; Amina Kulibali, founder of the Gabu dynasty in Senegal; Ana de Sousa Nzinga, who resisted the Portuguese conquest of Angola; Beatrice Kimpa Vita, a Kongo prophet burned at the stake by Christian missionaries; Nanda, mother of the famous warrior-king Shaka Zulu; and many others.
These extraordinary women's stories, narrated in the style of African oral tradition, are absorbing, informative, and accessible. The abundant illustrations, many of them rare archival images, depict the diversity among Black women and make this volume a unique treasure for every art lover, every school, and every family.

Wonderful Book.......2006-03-21
I think everyone of any ethnic background could appreciate this beautifully illustrated text. It has even given me some historical context for a book I'm writting. I love it.
Exciting Research.......2004-10-01
In Praise of Black Women is one of my alltime favorite books, beautifully illustrated and colorful, it does an excellent job at presenting ancestrial and legendary African women as leaders, smart, beautiful, sexy, brave, talented, spiritual, mystical, five dimensional...Every type is represented, from warrior to diplomat and everyone in between. Included, are the average everyday persons who performed extra-ordinary acts of faith and deeds. Purchasing this book new will set you back a bit, but it is worth every dollar...A home library staple and heirloom
An African treasury.......2004-04-18
"In Praise of Black Women" is a gorgeously illustrated volume relating the lives of ancient African queens, rulers and warriors from pre-historic Africa through ancient Egypt up to the 19th century. Twenty-eight remarkable women are profiled here, all of whom had a lasting impact on their time. Here you will find Queen Tiye, the consort of Pharaoh Amenhotep III; Makeda, the legendary Queen of Sheba; Nandi, the mother of Shaka Zulu, and a host of other fascinating women. Superbly narrated by Simone Schwarz-Bart in the tradition of the oral historians of Africa, there are also historical sidebars on each page to bring the time and place into fuller perspective. This book is a magnificent tribute to the women of Africa and to all women of the African diaspora.
You Owe It to Yourself to Read This Book!.......2002-02-09
In Praise of Black Women: Ancient African Queens is an astonishingly rich, gorgeous jewel box of information, artwork and the voices of women who changed the world interwoven with the words of "ordinary" women. This is a mission of true love and commitment--the work that went into it is evident on every page, and from that loving tribute flows the wonder of our Ancient African Queens and their inspring legacies. Everyone who is or knows or loves a Black woman will find this book a very rewarding read.
In Praise of Black Women: Ancient African Queens.......2001-05-14
This is a beautiful book for all generations. The book is broken down into short stories. There is extensive use of pictures and historical diagrams which makes each story interesting for adults and children. This book provides the reader with a true sense of who these women were. It is a wonderful book for all families, especially those with young girls and teenagers. I wish all students and teachers had access to this book. This is not just for the African-American population. American children receive too much of their learning from "acceptable history" books and the movies, both which perpetuate an inaccurate picture of much of the rest of the world. I know this book opened my eyes and expanded my view of history.

Absolutely Great!.......2007-08-01
This book is a gem. It is a treasure trove of detailed photographs of the wonderful costumes created by Trisha Biggar.
If you are a costume player or just a costume historian, you will find this book a marvel. This is one of the best books I've ever seen as a record of a movie of any kind.
a MUST HAVE book for every Starswars fan !.......2007-03-30
Absolutely wonderful !
Fantastic pictures, you will shock all your Starwars friends showing it !
And Italian fans will recognize all pics taken at italian movies' locations: Como Lake (Villa Balbianello) where the Padme&Anakin wedding cerimony was celebrated, and Lenno village.
A MUST HAVE book for every Starwars Fans.
Costume Haute Couture..........2007-02-23
I picked this book up at a local bookstore for a whopping $5.00 . I enjoyed the movies, but they definitely aren't at the top of my favorites list. This book appealed to me purely for the fashion, costume, and design aspects. And it delivers a beautiful display for all those things. I actually found myself reading the book (usually I just dissect the pictures and draw inspiration that way), and found it to be well written as well. The text, gives insight into how a large scale costuming production works for theatrical purposes. It illustrates all of the dynamics of organizing such a production from start to finish. I imagine this would be a good read for someone interested in the theatrical costuming field. Besides that, it is a wonderful coffee table book , or uber bible of clothes for the "Con" participant. Surely worth ten times what I paid!
Simply breathtaking!.......2007-02-09
I finally got this book - now I don't know why I waited! Totally worth it!
Anyone who is a fan of Star Wars and even a casual fan of costumes will truly enjoy this book. The book is filled with exquisitely detailed photos and descriptions of all of the costumes from Eps 1-3, and many from Eps 4-6, but the focus is really on the costumes that dominated the last 3 films - those of Amidala/Padmé, the Emperor, Bail Organa, Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc. Some of the most creative details are illustrated on the numerous characters that only appear briefly at the senate meetings, and their attire reflects their status in society as well as the environment from which they come. There are close-ups of the detailed beadwork, stitching, tooled leather and fabrics used to create each work of art. There is also a visual reference at the back of the book with images of every Star Wars costume, and there are a few foldout pages as well showing the different styled robes and gowns for some of the main characters. The next best thing would be to touch the fabric! (Supposedly you can do that in the limited edition boxed version - complete with fabric samples).
Several character illustrations by Iain McCaig, Dermot Power, and others are shown - which is amazing to see the concept art of the character with their wardrobe, then the final masterpiece by Trisha Biggar.
A must for anyone in love with Star Wars and the imaginative design that set the stage for each character.
Tremendous book.......2007-01-09
Probably one of the five or ten best Star Wars books, up there with the 'Art of' books from the Classic trilogy. This is a terrific look at Trisha Biggar's amazing work, and gets into exquisite detail on many of the sumptuous costumes from the prequels. Whether you loved or hated the films, you must admit, the outfits were out of this world, and this book chronicles all that work and effort. Well worth a purchase.

"a heavy yet wonderful Collector's piece".......2007-01-09
I was so excited when my package arrived and couldn't wait to open it.
What i got is an unbelievable box that holds a mass of little treasures, beginning with the little piece of Darth Vaders Cape and continuing with the book itself, the fabric samples or the also included DVD.
Everything is done with so much care for the details and you also get a certificate plus a little card with your book's collectors number. I don't regret my purchase at all. Even though it was a lot of money, it's totally worth it for every fan of the Saga who doesn't just like the ships, battles or lightsaber-fights. Also i have a little suggestion - be careful carrying it around - it is really heavy :)
The One that I've been waiting for.......2006-04-02
Ever since I saw Episode One I have been fascinated by the costume designs of the Star Wars universe and finally here is the book that shows just how special these costumes are. With large photographs of the costumes and detailed close ups that show the attention to detail.
Finally my time in a galaxy far, far away has an end?
The Fabric of the Galaxy!.......2006-01-15
This book is above and beyond excellent. From the way that the book is packaged, presented and written, not to mention the tangible supplements that are exclusive to this edition - such as the cloth swatch from Darth Vader's cape - what a thrill it is to actually own something that has literally been a part of the Star Wars universe!
This book is highly informative, insightful and entertaining.
Packed full of sumptuous photographs, illustrations, fold-outs, cloth swatches and an exclusive DVD - ANYTHING a Star Wars fan or those with only a passing interest in film costuming could ever want.
This publication is a must. It is simply an absolute joy to behold and a treasure trove for one and all who read it. I'm sure it is destined to become a crown jewel in many a Star Wars fan book collection!
I cannot recommend Dressing a Galaxy enough - go buy it, and May The Force Be With You!
Bar None.......2005-12-10
You can buy whatever book you want on the Star Wars films, but not having this one is a crime. Photography is amazingly clear and detailed, the inserts are awesome, and the swatches...forget about it...they are priceless.
This is, by far THE package of the Star Wars empire. Destined to be a classic and one "to die for" in the Star Wars ranks. Don't, let it pass you by.
Pricey, yes, but it's a stunning book........2005-12-09
I was beginning to think this book wouldn't come, because the release was put back twice and then it seemed to be unavailable. Well, I guess with limited editions of this price band it's understandable. I was kind of starting to not care, because at this price I was starting to think I should save my money. Then today, my other half called me at work to say this huge parcel had been delivered. Yes!
I got home an hour ago and, well, it IS huge. Extremely well packed, a box inside another box, and then the fabric-covered clamshell box with the fastended silk wrap. Lovely. I almost didn't want to unseal it any further, but carefully I did. The fresh print smell hit me first, and within seconds I got a headache from it. Opening the box gave me that geeky excitement I haven't had since, I don't know when. I'd made sure to wash my hands first. Then I opened it. The book is outwardly the same as the regular version, set into the right-hand side of the clamshell with a red silk pull underneath to help lift it out. On the other side, there was the replica wookie belt buckle, a certificate of authenticity, a companion DVD, and a special sealed sample of Vader's cloak fabric. All looked pretty good.
I lifted out the book with the pull, and noticed it's thicker than the regular version, with lots of the special inserts I'd read about. Nice and weighty, I put it aside, because underneath is a gatefold supplement containing a dozen or more fabric samples from the costumes pictured next to them. Lovely. Really lovely. And then, underneath that, a thicker booklet showcasing digital creatures from the prequels and their costumes. I then opened the main book to find the limited edition number. There are 2,500 of these books, and I got number 2,479. I think I was lucky getting this!
So often these collectors pieces are disappointing, but I have to be completely honest with this. It's a beautiful book, and I haven't even started reading it yet, which isn't going to make a lot of difference because of the quality of the whole package. If you can get hold of a copy, do it. I know it's pricey, but you'll get over that soon enough, and you'll have what I think is one of the best pieces of Star Wars memorabilia ever made.

Garfield in his 39th Book.......2003-12-02
Being a big Garfield fan, I enjoyed this book. It is a wonderful, entertaining book (although you should first read Garfield Beefs Up, #37, and Garfield Gets Cookin', #38, before you read this book.) But I recommend this book to anybody, Garfield fan or not. Great art, and heartwarming fat cat, Garfield, is back again!
if you ask me, this is better than some reviews say.......2003-07-18
The title here should have been the first sentence! I was amazed by how much the first strip was like an opening joke. If Garfield keeps on going like this, it could get more popular than "Peanuts" was.

Okay.......2003-05-05
This book is, in comparison to the other Garfield comics, not as great as I hoped it would be. The puns and jokes throughout the entire book seemed a bit too stressed. The jokes weren't surprising, and could also be called "predictable". However, Garfield has always been a favorite of mine, so I'm sure that there will later be a coming book filled with great strips.
Date coverage.......2003-04-07
Contains all the daily and Sunday strips November 5, 2002 through June 2, 2001.

Dinner's ready! Who wouldn't want another serving of Judy Brown's delectable humor compilations? Joke Stew is the sequel to the delicious Joke Soup, which has achieved net sales of over 22,000 copies. Like its predecessor, Joke Stew is jam-packed with side-splitting quips and biting one-liners of beloved modern-day comedians. Brown once again categorizes the humor material alphabetically by topic, making the book serve double-duty as an excellent reference guide. Humor aficionados everywhere will double over in laughter after seeing entries such as:"You know why fish are so thin? They eat fish."-Jerry Seinfeld"That milk can flow from a breast is a miraculous miracle. But I can't getpast the fact that food is coming out of my wife's breasts. What once wasessentially an entertainment center has now become a juice bar."-Paul Reiser"I'm reading Hints from Heloise, and she says that if you put an angora sweater in the freezer for an hour, it won't shed for the rest of the day. And I'm thinking, 'My cat sheds an awful lot.'"-Ellen DeGeneres
Customer Reviews:
fun variety of jokes.......2005-06-20
"Joke Stew" contains a wonderful variety of jokes, covering a great variety of topics and types of humor. There are a few with adult humour, but there seems to be nothing nasty or insulting or immoral or politically prejudiced (e.g., some other joke books starting off on page one with "Abortion" kinda kills the mood). "Joke Stew" is light hearted fun.
Joke Stew provides a hardy laugh!.......2001-04-23
This book is a must have for aspiring comics and comedy lovers alike. Brown's book is a tool that inspires as well as guides those interested in the art of joke writing. The book includes a wide range of talent from legendary comics like Bill Cosby to the up and coming comedic stars of tomorrow. If nothing else the book allows the reader the opportunity to learn what makes these neurotic people tick.
A must read...........2001-04-11
Joke Stew is a great way for a reader to get in touch with his or her favorite stand-up comedians. It's a lot of fun to read over and over again as you try and remember your favorite jokes. Same recipe as Joke Soup, but with all new comedians and quotes. Great Book!!!
Tired of those awkward pauses? Pick up this book...........2001-04-05
Joke Stew is fantastic! It's a lot of fun to have on your coffee table. You can pick it up and browse for hilarious observations on any subject (great for when you need a funny quote to begin speeches and presentations).
No Jesting! This is a great book!.......2001-03-26
I have copies of both JOKE SOUP and JOKE STEW. I actually bought several copies of both to have on hand as gifts for any and all occasions. You'll find an amazing amount of comics and their funniest material in these books. Whether you're a stand-up comic yourself or you need to give a speech for any occasion, you'll find Judy's books invaluable as inspiration in writing your own funny jokes.
Book Description
From "The Next Generation" and "The X-Files" to "Farscape" and "Enterprise," science fiction television shows have millions of devoted fans. American Science Fiction TV is the first full-length study of this popular genre. Writing with the clarity of a scholar and the enthusiasm of a fan, Jan Johnson-Smith shows how science fiction television has displaced the Western in the American cultural imagination. As advances in special effects have made science fiction television technically feasible on a more lavish scale than ever before, visual style has become as important as narrative--sometimes even more important--in expressing the meaning of the genre. The main part of the book uses case studies of several key science fiction series, including "Space: Above and Beyond," "StarGate SG-1," and "Babylon 5," to exemplify particular narrative patterns and visual styles. The case studies explore themes such as politics, ideology, race and ethnicity, gender difference, militarism, and the use of science fiction narratives as allegories of present-day social and political concerns. American Science Fiction TV opens an important new area of genre studies and will be of interest to scholars and fans alike.

Surveys the development of science fiction television .......2005-06-10
American Science Fiction TV: Star Trek, Stargate And Beyond by Jan Johnson-Smith (Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Theory, Bournemouth University Media School, United Kingdom) surveys the development of science fiction television over the last twenty years with a special focus on narrative, imagery, and ideology. The author makes some fascinating connections between the ancient tradition of the epic journey with the more recent American tradition of the "Wild West". The reader is shown how themes of journey and exploration, and the archetypal characters associated with these themes, have continued from ancient times to the modern era. Johnson-Smith utilizes case studies of several key science fiction series including "Babylon 5", "StarGate SG-1"; "Space: Above and Beyond", and others to reveal common narrative patterns and visual styles. These case studies explore diverse themes including politics, ideology, race and ethnicity, gender difference, militarism, and the use of science fiction narratives as allegories of present-day social and political issues. American Science Fiction TV will prove of immense interest to students of American Popular Culture, the history of American television programming, and fans of fantasy and science-fiction.
evolving themes of TV science fiction.......2005-03-01
Johnson-Smith, a lecturer in film and TV at an English university, reaches the conclusion that unlike earlier periods of science fiction, "modern American sf fiction is neither utopian or dystopian...it enforces a critique of the Western mythos whilst renegotiating its finer aspects." This Western mythos centers on the desire for exploration. This desire was seen as far back as the Gilgamesh myth of the ancient Babylonians; and it emerged in American culture especially in Westward expansion and the related romance of the West. It entails a sense of wonder and the hope of encounter with the Sublime--elements undeniably evident in modern TV sci-fi, which are a major reason for their appeal. But imparting this sense of wonder and picturing the Sublime became possible only when TV technology improved from its first days. Only in recent years has TV arrived in an "era where far-seeing 'tele-vision' can finally live up to its name" by making use of "brilliant colors and dynamic motion" to enhance sf narratives. Today's TV science-fiction shows, notably "Star-Trek," are contrasted with earlier ones such as "Twilight Zone" creating an atmosphere mainly by suggestion, leaving much to the viewer's imagination. The author identifies a new era in science-fiction TV and analyzes the bases of its themes and popular appeal.

Book Description
When Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father in 1984, the world lost one of its greatest singers. Although his fans were stunned, the singer's friends, knowing the violence that cocaine had created in Gaye, weren't surprised that the killer was found to have acted in self-defense. In intriguing detail, Sharon Davis charts Gaye's extraordinary, often turbulent career, including his tempestuous relationship with the record company Tamla Motown and its legendary head Berry Gordy. She follows Gaye's struggle for artistic independence and details his successes with singles like Can I Get a Witness? and I Heard It Through the Grapevine and the epoch-making album 'What's Going On? Sharon Davis is considered a leading authority on Motown history. She is the author of Motown: The History and Stevie Wonder: Rhythms of Wonder.
Customer Reviews:
i hate to say this, because I had high hopes ... but.......2003-09-23
this book is really not good. David Ritz's Gaye bio isn't perfect, but it's way better. The quotes Davis uses from interviews are just plain lame: mostly they are broad and impersonal. This book works better as a history of Motown, but not even so well as that.
Another Powerful Read on Marvin Gaye.......2002-09-29
Marvin Gaye not only was a musical Genius but the Cat was just very down to earth.reading on Him has always been interesting to me because the Guy was very Complex&so many things went down. His Battle with Motown over His Artistic Direction,Berry Gordy,Marvin&His Wives,His Mother&His Father.so many things involved.this Book takes on all of that&was very well Written.
Healing.......2002-01-05
This book tells the story of Gaye, his relationship with his family, Motown, Berry Gordy, his wives (one of which was Gordy's sister, Anna) and with his fans.
Unlike other bios of Motown stars (Knight, Reeves)this one is packed with info and personal details about the singer. Marvin is very candid as well as other members of his family about his relationship with his father. It also seems that Marvin is bashing Berry Gordy...the man who gave him a chance at stardom. It also seems that Marvin (along with other Motown stars)is jealous of the attention paid to Diana Ross. Marvin looked up to Berry and was hurt when he could not receive approval of his father figure.
The relationship he had with his wives Anna Gordy and Janis Hunter is also discussed-- although very briefly especially in terms of Hunter. I would've liked to know more about the teen girl Marvin called his inspiration. It is clear that Marvin's long battle with COCAINE, keeps from maintaining healthy relationships with any one.
The end of 'GRAPEVINE' talks about the tragic death of Marvin. I was very satisfied with Davis's work on this subject.
This book gave a great sense of comfort and allowed me to ......... Heal.
Thanks Davis, I am looking forward to your new book on Diana Ross.

Book Description
Basic Economics has been written with the thought that learning economics should be not only a relaxed experience, but also an enjoyable one.
This is the revised and enlarged edition of a new kind of introduction to economics for the general public-without graphs, statistics, or jargon. In addition to being updated, Basic Economics has also become more internationalized by including economic problems from more countries around the world, because the basic principles of economics are not confined by national borders. While most chapter titles remain the same, their contents have changed considerably, reflecting the experiences of many different peoples and cultures.
Customer Reviews:
So simple, yet so great!!.......2007-09-09
Even if you think you know economics or you know you do not, this book is outstanding, easy to understand, and written very well. Can't imagine not owning this!
Not a citizen's guide.......2007-07-31
Thomas Sowell is Milton Friedman with a venomous disdain for politics and the media. The book sells itself as an equationless, odorless introduction to economics, and the magic is certainly in repeated application of intuitive concepts.
Sowell builds your intuition by training you to think in terms of trade-offs of resources and the incentives which guide them. Sowell favors the market because it utilizes these incentives to allocate scarce resources most effectively, while government actions rarely have the proper incentives to direct behavior in the way government intends. As his second objective, Sowell disfavors the media and politics because they use statistics and wording that are misleading.
By using the intuitive concepts presented in the book, it is easy to see how statistics come up short and how words are often too categorical to describe situations reasonably. Later, Sowell concentrates more on economics as the allocation of scarce resources rather than on incentive.
The author also throws in other insightful, more philosophical insights along the way. For example, knowledge and power are often contained in the same person in a free market, but not in socialism, which allows a free market to find a more valuable use for the scarce resource of knowledge just by virtue of the system. For another example, profits are the price of incentive, and removing the visible price of profits causes the invisible price of inefficiency to appear. This ends up costing society more, as many factual cases show. If you consider the relationship of incentive here, this should fall into place.
In all, this book is more akin to a more political book like Free to Choose than its advertisement would lead one to suppose. It is different in that it lives more on the extremes. It has deeper analysis combined with sharper criticism of the "zest of the media" and the "jungle of misconceptions" in politics, as Thomas Sowell puts it. If you can stomach just the occasional jabs at the media and undue references to the Soviet Union--one book about the regime is cited in at least 6 chapters--this book is well worth it.
Note: Beware of the green copy because typos abound. Also, for those who think Sowell is just some pro-market fanatic, I'll leave you with this quote on p. 251, "Economic decisions made through the marketplace are not always better than decisions that governments can make. Much depends on whether those market transactions accurately reflect both the costs and the benefits which result. Under some conditions, they do not."
"Capitalism good, Communism bad".......2007-07-23
That's basically it. Repeated ad-nauseum for 128 pages. Unfortunately that's as far as I got, I just couldn't take it. With each new concept presented, the author eventually leads the reader back to the same inevitable conclusion, "Capitalism good, Communism bad". I actually thought I was rereading the same pages by mistake or that sections of the book had been reprinted by accident.
If you are looking for a book about basic economics, as I was, something that would lay out a foundation of universal economic truths, this book is not it.
If, however you need some simplistic, one sided ammunition in order to shout down the next unsuspecting tree-hugging-commie-liberal you meet at your next cocktail party that tells you why he thinks raising the minimum wage in this country would be a good thing, then buy this book. I'm not kidding.
Guide in economic realism for a world plagued by unrealistic, ineffective policy.......2007-05-31
When I decided to take on Thomas Sowell's "Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy" I was a little unsure of what I was getting into. While the study of economics has always fascinated me, my in-depth inquiry into the subject has, thus far, been primarily in the realm of economic philosophy. The title of the book attracted me because I felt it would give me insight into the general technical workings of economics I hadn't studied in depth. While Sowell does, indeed, provide many statistical and technical explanations for the workings of economics, his book is more focused than I suspected. The second half of the title is probably more representative of the book than the first: "A Citizen's Guide to the Economy."
Sowell, a renowned economist and Senior Fellow at Standford University, has written this book directed at the everyday citizen, not only by simplifying and explaining economic terminology, but in its direct instruction of how we, as citizens, are to survive and influence a society that waters its view of the science of economics down to emotional misinformation and ignorance, rather than founding it in realism and thoughtfulness. Early on, Sowell cites Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes as saying, "We need education in the obvious more than investigation of the obscure." This statement sums up what this book hopes to provide: an education in the obvious, factual, scientific principles of economics, and a warning of the "obscure investigations" into ineffective policy reforms and invasions into economic activity that politicians (from both sides) often impose.
Many will probably be scared away from this book because they'll dismiss Sowell's economic beliefs as "opinion." While Sowell may insert his opinions at times, he will distinguish for you what is opinion and what is fact. For those who believe bloated government spending is a solution to poverty and quality of life, the facts, historical examples, and statistical evidence Sowell provides will not provide an "argument" against government spending, he will rather illustrate how there really is no argument on the issue of proven economic principles at all. This isn't like the issues of gay marriage or prayer in schools. This isn't global warming hysteria. This is science.
Sowell covers a wide array of economic principles. The book could be divided in two parts, the first being the intricate details of universal economic principles, beginning with a Friedmanesque explanation of prices and markets, and concluding with discussions of industry and commerce, profits/losses, and labor markets (these explanations are not limited only to monetary economies). The second half deals with our monetary system and the current established monetary institutions in economics: banking systems, investment firms, the stock market, etc. He also explains national and international economies, spending more time on trade than any other subject in the book.
All these subjects are dealt with an observation of factual evidence and statistical interpretation. Sowell continually interjects with ways government regulations have interfered and caused poverty in the past, and constantly addresses and dispels myths about brand names, monopolies, and the "morality" of the marketplace. Sowell's opposition to anti-trust laws and the policies enacted by Hoover and FDR in the Great Depression era are probably the most striking historical interpretations in the book, even though the conclusions are somewhat depressing when understanding the amount of jobs, lives, and livelihoods that were lost by the creation of the welfare system, farm subsidization, and trade regulations. Among these examples, Sowell takes a rare departure from factual evidence, attempting to explain why society and politicians are so ignorant on economic science. After reading this book, you will never listen to politicians the same way, and perhaps you will never listen to them again.
I'm a frequent reader of Sowell's columns, so I wasn't surprised by the thick level of intellectual depth he took in his book. However, coming to a long 496 pages, his heavy analysis can make your brain hurt at times. I happen to find that a satisfying feeling (call me masochistic). If you're curious about economic science, Sowell outlines the principles in a way that will excite you, even if the examples of government interference and destruction terrify you. Sowell sticks to scientific economic explanation to counter the emotional reasoning of Marx, and doesn't mention the qualities of "freedom" or "liberty" associated with capitalism (other than using the term "free" market I suppose). While I kept wanting Sowell to talk about how the liberty provided in a free market is much more moral than the slavery imposed by socialistic systems, it was beneficial to hear a detailed scientific analysis of faulted socialist thinking in a more direct, and simple way: free markets improve life, restricted markets diminish it.
Overall, Sowell does a great job in providing a handbook for the everyday citizen. Every American needs to read this book, or a book like it. If more people understood the factual principles of economics, it would influence our voting, which would influence our politicians, which could, eventually, influence our economy to the point where we have an even higher standard of living, employment, and freedom than we have now.
Finally an Economist Who Underdstands Economics.......2007-05-27
This book is highly recommended for both laymen and those with economics training alike, but for different reasons. For the layman it provides an accurate, easy to grasp picture of economics without all the bull typically seen in econ books. For economists, the book will hopefully show them that economics is a SOCIAL science and not a physical science based on calculus.
If more Americans understood basic economics and finance, they would have financial freedom instead of being a slave to debt. But the reason finance and economics education is not mandatory in the secondary school system is because the US government feels that consumers should spend themselves into the next generation as a way to produce GDP growth. This is what happens when you have a nation in decline.
As a magnificent supplement to this book, I highly recommend readers obtain a copy of "America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression." This book specifically discusses some of the concerns mentioned by Sowell and relates them to America's future. As well, it provides additional economic insight relevant for investors that is not mentioned by Sowell. Don't be fooled by the title though. The book devotes only 3 of the 18 huge chapters to investments. The other chapters are filled with the macroeconomic and financial realities of America, the biggest debtor nation in the world. This could be one of the most relevant books out today not under the radar, not because it reads like a novel (it doesn't) but due to the comprehensiveness of America's challenges and shear insight. While a bit pricey, it's the best-researched book I've ever read, quite long, and well worth the price. America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression
